Sunbury goes global By Matt Crossman Sunbury is a step closer to finally getting its own global learning centre. Hume council snapped up a 4083-squaremetre site in Macedon Street for $1.885 million last Thursday, with chief executive Domenic Isola declaring it a “stellar day for the people of Sunbury and our entire municipality”. Mr Isola said the council wanted to build its new library and learning centre at the central site, which adjoins the existing library and the former council offices, which are now leased to Western Water. The deal was sealed after the property was passed in during its on-site auction by agents Burgess Rawson. Mr Isola said Sunbury’s population was expected to grow by up to 70 per cent within 15 years. “The site will house a state-of-the-art library as well as rooms and high-tech facilities to assist the education of Sunbury residents for many years to come.’’
Having made their acting debuts at just nine months of age, Sunbury’s Eloise and Isobel Henry, now 5, are wowing judges with their dance skills on Australia’s Got Talent. The twins got their first break on popular drama Offspring Offspring, sharing the role of baby Stella for two seasons, after their mother Jodie saw a notice put out by a multiple-births group. The girls took a shine to performing after starting dancing at Sunbury’s FlashDance Performing Arts while just 18 months’ old. They were three when they emphatically told their mother they had made their minds up and were set on a life on the stage. ‘‘It just seems like it’s in them,’’ Ms Henry says. ‘‘Even on days off, all they want to do is put their music on, dress up and put on shows for everyone.’’ The girls, who have also appeared on shows such as Underbelly: Squizzy and at events including Carols by Candlelight, have delighted in sharing their latest TV experience with their Sunbury Primary School classmates. Mr Isola added that the global learning centre would become one of three in Hume’s global village concept of linked lifelong learning centres. Others are at Broadmeadows and Craigieburn. The purchase was applauded by Sunbury Residents Association president Bernie O’Farrell. The association recently wrote to the council, urging it to buy the land, which was formerly used for a service station. ‘‘We’re very pleased,’’ Mr O’Farrell said. ‘‘That site just makes sense. “It may still be some years away, but at least that land has been secured for the community.’’ Mr O’Farrell said the group looked forward to seeing more details about the council’s plans. Mr Isola said residents would be given the chance to have design input. “The global learning centre will offer Sunbury a modern civic building,” he said. “We want to construct a centre that can meet the needs of a community which includes many senior citizens and large numbers of young families.”

Fires expose internet deficiency By Matt Crossman Firefighters have joined forces with Macedon Ranges council to call for better internet connections at all CFA stations before next bushfire season. The council will write to state and federal emergency service ministers after a motion put by Cr Ian Ellis drew unanimous support from fellow councillors last Wednesday. Cr Ellis said recent fires in the municipality had exposed a lack of basic communication capacity, including mobile phone and internet services, in many areas. He said it was wrong that most CFA stations
in one of Australia’s most fire-prone areas did not have stand-alone internet connections. CFA Mountain Group spokesman Mike Dornau said any efforts to bring in better technology were welcome. ‘‘The way technology has developed over the years, things like the internet have become as big a part of firefighting as building tracks,’’ he said. ‘‘The Woodend brigade has spent a fair bit of money updating internet and computer systems, just to keep members up-to-date with what’s going on. ‘‘It’s all connected to our pagers, so by the time we get to the station, maps and all sorts of things have been printed out.
“The first crews just need to pick those up and they’re off and running.’’ Mr Dornau said some brigades had better access to technology than others, and some firefighters were more savvy with technology. “Other small country brigades are not and are still relying almost totally on pagers,’’ he said. ‘‘The CFA does a good job providing, but a lot of the time the individual brigades have got to beef up their own equipment. ‘‘Anything that governments can do to improve access and reliability is welcome.’’ Mr Dornau said last week’s fires near Ballarat showed how critical technology had become. ‘‘We were monitoring the fires all day
because we could have been the next brigade to be called … better access to technology will benefit volunteers as well,’’ he said. Cr Ellis said: ‘‘Some efforts have been made to improve the telephone operations, but provision of internet service to CFA stations has not been addressed.” He said the introduction of universal and reliable access would have a positive impact on emergency responses. ‘‘Most CFA training for volunteers is conducted online,” Cr Ellis said. “Communication connections can consist of phone and internet … weather updates are also more effectively accessed via the internet.’’

Work will begin on creating a new vision for Hanging Rock after Macedon Ranges council endorsed the state government’s recommendations for the reserve and tourism precinct. But the Hanging Rock Action Group is disappointed that the council will press on with the construction of picnic shelters in the East Paddock. The council said it was concerned it could lose Regional Development Australia funding if the project did not proceed. But action group spokesman Luke Spielvogel said it was unwise to define the East Paddock with structures before work on a master plan began. ‘‘If we’re about to launch into a master plan, we need to look at the whole precinct and make sure we’re getting it right,’’ he said. ‘‘It’s only appropriate that we don’t put the first built structures on the East Paddock in the months preceding that.’’ Councillors last week decided not to begin any new works but to proceed with current projects such as the picnic shelters. An officer’s report said the matter had been considered by the Hanging Rock Development Advisory Committee, which supported the shelter project progressing. ‘‘The new shelters will be an asset for tourism and events and will take pressure off the environmentally sensitive areas immediately around Hanging Rock,’’ mayor Graham Hackett said. The council, which will remain manager of the Rock, will review the role and membership of the committee.

Workers from four of Sunbury’s largest employers will pick up rubbish at The Nook as part of Clean Up Australia Day activities. Hume council, Sunbury Community Health and Salesian College employees will join Western Water counterparts to spruce up the popular swimming and picnic spot next to Jacksons Creek on Tuesday. Western Water customer and community relations general manager Graham Holt says it’s a great chance to help make Sunbury a better place. ‘‘We’ve done a lot of work with Landcare
and other environment groups to help improve Jacksons Creek over the years,’’ Mr Holt says. ‘‘Rubbish removal is another important way we can all protect our environment and help foster biodiversity.’’ Other events will be held across Sunbury and the Macedon Ranges as part of school clean-up day on Friday and the national day on Sunday. First-home buyers trying to break into the hot Sunbury market could be the winners under federal Labor’s proposed negative gearing reforms, a local real estate agent believes. Leading Real Estate director Adam Sacco said he would expect a short-term increase in investment property buyer activity if the Opposition were to win this year’s election. ‘‘People will take advantage of the chance to buy properties and negativegear them prior to those changes,’’ he said. ‘‘But in the long term, these changes should make the Sunbury market more accessible to first-home buyers. ‘‘I don’t see the price of houses being affected greatly; [it’s] more the demographic of buyers that will probably change.” But Mr Sacco agreed with the Real Estate Institute of Victoria, which said tenants might face higher rents. ‘‘If negative gearing is abolished investors will obviously look for a way to recoup,’’ he said. McEwen Labor MP Rob Mitchell said the fact negative gearing would continue to apply to new houses meant supply would increase, placing downward pressure on housing prices and rents. ‘‘The dream of owning your own home is slipping out of reach for thousands of young Australians,’’ he said. ‘‘Our policy will make sure the next generation is on a more level playing field.’’ Matt Crossman

Call to fix bridge bottleneck By Matt Crossman Residents have echoed calls for a major upgrade of the road between Diggers Rest and Bulla, including the duplication of a dangerous, one-way bridge across Deep Creek. Diggers Rest Residents Association president Bob Rau said rapid residential growth in the area had led to a massive increase in traffic over the past 15 years. ‘‘There’s also a large number of motorists from Gisborne using that road, too,’’ he said. ‘‘It’s pretty much the only way through to the airport from west or north of Diggers Rest.’’ Mr Rau said the narrow Holden Bridge, which
is only wide enough for one-way traffic, was a ‘‘very serious’’ choke point crossing Deep Creek. ‘‘You have a give-way on the western side, but people coming down the hill [from the east] are frequently faced with others not abiding by the sign. We have observed a tremendous amount of demonstrated frustration, with fingers and fists flying out the windows.’’ Mr Rau said bridge railings were also damaged by heavy traffic at least 10 times a year. ‘‘With the narrow pavement, which is deteriorating, increased traffic, the choke point of the bridge and the fact you’ve also got to keep your eye out for kangaroos at night … it’s
a critical situation,’’ Mr Rau said. In Parliament last week, upper house Liberal MP Bernie Finn urged the state government to fund upgrades of the road and Holden Bridge. ‘‘A road that is not much better than a goat track is being used by huge numbers of cars on a daily basis,’’ Mr Finn said. ‘‘We have quite often huge numbers of cars awaiting huge numbers of other cars across the other side of the bridge. It is something that has been fair dinkum driving the locals nuts for a very long time.’’ VicRoads acting regional director Bryan Sherritt said nine crashes had been recorded on the road in the five years to last December
31, one resulting in serious injury. Two of the crashes involved motorcycles. A government spokesman said the road was a matter for its manager, Hume council. Hume city infrastructure director Peter Waite said the council had received $930,000 under the federal black spot program. Works, including the construction of road shoulders and roadside barriers, will take place between March and June. “Council will investigate the feasibility of a new two-lane bridge,’’ Mr Waite said. “If the investigation shows that a new bridge is feasible, council can then seek state or federal government grants to fund the works.’’

Dozens of street artists were hard at work at Woodend’s Black Forest Timber Mill on Saturday, as part of this year’s Macedon Ranges Sustainable Living Festival. The centrepiece of the exhibition was a co-operative mural created with sugar-based paints on a giant, upcycled plywood canvas. Energy and Resources Minister Lily D’Ambrosio also unveiled a 30kW community solar energy plant at the mill. Other highlights of the festival included a food and garden exhibition and design and technology expo, both in Forest Street. The exhibition at the mill has been extended. Police made seven arrests after finding cannabis, ice, heroin, ecstasy and weapons during raids on five Sunbury houses last Wednesday. The raids were part of an ongoing operation in the area led by the Fawkner divisional response unit. A Sunbury man, 25, was charged with possessing cannabis and weapons offences and bailed to appear at Broadmeadows Magistrates Court on May 5. A Sunbury man, 26, will also face court on May 5 charged with trafficking, other drug offences and possessing crime proceeds. A Cairnlea man, 27, has been charged with methylamphetamine and heroin trafficking and bail, weapon and property offences. A Sunshine man, 31, will face Broadmeadows Magistrates Court on May 5 charged with trafficking and other drug offences. A Sunbury woman, 21, will face the same court on “ice” and cannabis possession charges. A 26-year-old Sunbury woman was charged with possession of cannabis and GHB. She has been bailed to appear at Broadmeadows Magistrates Court on March 7. Another Sunbury woman, 26, received a diversion notice for possession of ecstasy and cannabis.

Sunbury drink-drive charges
A Sunbury woman is expected to be charged by summons after she allegedly ran into at least four cars while drink-driving through a 40km/h school zone in Charter Road, Sunbury. Police said witnesses saw the woman, who had her teenage daughter in the car, fail to stop after hitting the cars about 4.30pm last Tuesday. Police allege the woman, 38, was involved in a physical altercation
with officers after being located at a panel beating business in Vineyard Road. She later returned a blood alcohol reading of 0.117.
Woodend waste extension
A waste company will be allowed to operate in Brooke Street, Woodend, for another two years after Macedon Ranges council extended an expiry date last Wednesday. Wheelie Waste, which handles the council’s waste management, was also granted permission to keep a roller door open during operating hours, despite the objections of residents and some councillors.

Council goes on the record Macedon Ranges council will consider installing recording equipment in its coming budget deliberations, after councillors deviated from officers’ recommendations last Wednesday night. The decision was part of a marathon four-hour meeting at Gisborne, during which many in the crowded gallery struggled to hear what councillors were saying, and vice versa. Councillors also approved a meeting cycle for 2016-17, which means all their meetings will be held in Gisborne. A report prepared in response to a petition by Newham resident Matthew Nickson said while making recordings of meetings available online had merit, it was likely to be too costly. Councillors were advised to defer any decision pending further investigations, but instead voted to consider changes when preparing the 2016-17 budget. A revised motion, moved by Cr Henry McLaughlin and seconded by Cr John Letchford, eventually received unanimous support. Cr McLaughlin said audio or visual recording of council meetings was in the interests of good governance. ‘‘Not everyone can attend meetings for a whole variety of reasons,’’ he said. ‘‘It would be relatively simple to make council meetings more accessible.’’ Cr Jennifer Anderson initially opposed
the motion, saying she feared the proposal would get lost in a competitive budget process, ‘‘especially in light of rate-capping’’. Cr Letchford said many people had forgotten that the former Gisborne shire offices had been set up to enable recordings, and changes should be relatively easy.

As part of his proposal, Mr Nickson compiled a survey showing 26 of the state’s 79 councils recorded or streamed meetings live via the internet, or had plans to do so. His campaign was supported by the Macedon Ranges Residents Association, which led a 2010 campaign to have meetings recorded. Cr Anderson and Cr Sally Piper were among those who fought for one-off council meetings at Kyneton, Woodend and Romsey to be maintained. But other councillors argued that experience has shown it was a meeting’s content, not its location, that attracted people to come along. ‘‘It’s been shown that having meetings in those towns does not increase attendance rates,’’ Cr Letchford said.

Back to basics approach By Matt Crossman A Riddells Creek man who dropped out of the corporate world is urging people to support a program that helps displaced indigenous communities of West Sumatra. Rob Henry, who quit an advertising job after the global financial crisis of 2008, divides his time between the Macedon Ranges and Indonesia’s Mentawai Islands, where he works to help people deal with shifts in language and cultural traditions due to their resettlement in government-run villages. ‘‘I was working in Melbourne and just got fed up with being part of the rat-race,’’ Mr Henry said. ‘‘It was a nice job, but I didn’t agree so much with the system. ‘‘I thought, by me staying in this role and continuing to develop this way, am I perhaps giving in to that … so I decided to resign.’’ It was actually surfing that took Mr Henry to the Mentawai Islands. ‘‘But once I arrived, I took a real interest in the local people and the culture,’’ he said. ‘‘I was intrigued by their sustainable practices, especially in light of our issues with our economy. I wanted to learn some of those skills and document it. “It all just sort of evolved from there.’’ Mr Henry was able to study the local language and learn about a tribal community he says is ‘‘really connected to the forest and to their culture’’. ‘‘I really noticed the contrast between the people who had been resettled and those who were still connected,’’ he said. ‘‘The people who were connected to their culture were living self-sufficiently. They were proud … and they were confident. Those who had been resettled were talking about how difficult life was and how hard it was to find money and so on.’’

Riddells Creek Primary School will receive $100,000 for a new outdoor learning space, Sunbury Primary School will get $20,000 for an outdoor sensory area.
Uphold town character
Macedon and Mount Macedon residents can have their say on new design guidelines for the commercial precincts of the two towns. Macedon Ranges mayor Graham Hackett said existing studies included objectives to protect and enhance the character of the towns. Mr Henry’s developed a community-based solution, Suku Mentawai, which gives people the chance to learn about their heritage, land and indigenous practices. In 2014, he launched the Indigenous Education Foundation to attract support for displaced indigenous communities worldwide, and is also working on a feature-length film. ‘‘The program is specific for Mentawai, but

SPORT New Riddell footy boss swats up on his netball The wife of new Riddell District Football Netball League operations manager Steven Williams has already joked she won’t see her husband on weekends until October. Williams, 46, started the job two weeks ago in place of the outgoing Toby Boyle. And it was a case of perfect timing. “I am a bit of a football nut and I love AFL,” Williams said last week. “I was at Hewlett Packard for 20 years. I took redundancy in October and I was looking for a role to keep me occupied. “I was looking for something more local and this came up. I was lucky to get it.”
The Gisborne resident’s recent involvement with the league has been limited to the junior side of things. He has lived in Gisborne for about 12 years after growing up in the Macedon Ranges. “My son is in his final year of under-16s [at Gisborne Rookies] and I’ve probably been involved since he was in under-10s,” Williams said. “Between 2013 and 2015 I was a coach there and I took on the role of coaching co-ordinator for this season. “I also helped set up the Gisborne Giants [a new junior team] but had to step down from both when I got the job.”
Williams played footy in the RDFL more than 20 years ago. “I played some junior footy in Woodend and Kyneton and the same with senior football,” he said. “I stopped when I was about 25 and moved to Adelaide.” Williams has had no involvement with netball, but has been working with league netball manager Kim Bailey to learn what he needs to know. He said his immediate concern was to make sure it was a smooth transition in the lead-up to the season, which begins on April 9.
Grand final at last . . . By Tara Murray Gisborne Bowling Club is through to its first Central Highlands Bowls division 1 grand final after beating reigning premier Kyneton Golf Gold on Saturday. Skip Glenn Johnston jnr says the club is buzzing. “We had 60-70 people here to celebrate, but we aren’t going over the top. “There’s still a job to do. We’ve been in and out of the top division for 35 years with at least 20 of those years in that division [without making a grand final].” The result against Golf Gold was convincing in the end, with Gisborne winning three rinks in the 110-76 victory. Johnston said getting a good start was the key to shutting out any nerves against a more experienced side. “Kyneton Golf is one of the premier clubs in Victoria so we definitely needed to jump out of the blocks,” he said “We’ve been starting slowly in recent weeks. My rink had been five or 10 shots down early in the previous three or four weeks. “Yesterday we got an early buffer and it paid off.” Johnston jnr said Gisborne’s new green had played a big part in the club’s turnaround this season, both in the players’ form and in attracting new faces. “Everyone has been able to practise regularly on a quick green,” he said. “Last year the green would be shut a few days a week.” Gisborne will face either Kyneton Golf Gold or Bacchus Marsh in the grand final in two weeks’ time. Meanwhile, Sunbury is hoping for some luck as it looks to break back into division 1 of Bowls Victoria pennant after losing the division 2 grand finals for the past three years. The club’s Dave Glennon says he hopes momentum the club has had in the regular season will continue into the finals. “We’ve won nine or 10 in a row and the club is vibrant,” he said. “All but one of our teams are in finals and three of those will play at home.” Sunbury’s top team easily accounted for Lalor (2), 107 (18) – 54 (0) in the final round of the division 2, section 2 regular season Elise Cowan won 22-11; Mark Cowan won 20-13; it was a 24-19 win for Brad Janner; and Brad Willoughby’s rink won 31-11. The win is Willoughby’s ninth straight since returning to the side. Sunbury will play Glenroy at Sunbury on Saturday. The winner of that match will meet the winner of Fitzroy Victoria (2) and West Coburg in the sectional grand final on Sunday.

“I hope I can continue the work Toby has done . . . he has done a really good job,” he said. “My objective is to make sure it’s as seamless as possible and to get to know clubs and build relationships with senior and junior teams. “I’m still trying to get my head around it.” Williams said he would settle into the role and then start to look ahead. “I hope I can bring new ideas to the league and clubs,” he said. “I’ll look to work with the wider community to impart some of my knowledge.” Tara Murray
United makes the big drop Sunbury United’s reign as a Gisborne and District Cricket Association McIntyre Cup powerhouse is over for now, with the club to be relegated next season. United won the premiership last season, its fourth in six attempts. But the club has found the going a lot tougher this season, hurting from the loss of players and winning just three matches. A final-round loss to Romsey consigned United to the ladder’s bottom rung and relegation. Romsey skipper Chris Burkett ensured it wasn’t his team headed for the drop with his first century of the season. Moving into the opening role, Burkett made 113 in his side’s 8-243, passing United’s day one total of 223. The win moved Romsey to fifth on the ladder, putting it 17 points clear of United. Woodend finished on top for a second successive year after a hard-fought win over Sunbury. Defending day one’s 9-299, Woodend’s bowlers had a tougher time of it than they might have expected. Sunbury put in a determined effort in falling only 10 runs short of victory, bowled out for 290. Heath Boffey led the way with 71, with James Morley taking five wickets for Woodend, which will now host Diggers Rest Bulla at Gilbert Gordon Oval in the first week of finals. The Burras enter the finals on the back of successive losses after going down to Gisborne on Saturday. The Burras were on the back foot going into day two with the Dragons resuming at 2-34 chasing 108. The Dragons easily acquired the necessary runs, going on to 8-200. Allrounder Clinton Young finished with a handy 57 not out. The win was enough for the Dragons to secure a home final at Gardiner Reserve. They play Riddell, which has won just one of its past four matches. On Saturday, Riddell suffered a shock loss to Bacchus Marsh, another side looking to avoid relegation. The Bulls were set a target of 228 for victory, which proved nowhere near enough runs on the board for Riddell. The Bulls finished their innings at 6-230 after 73 overs. With three wickets, Matthew Darby was best of the bowlers for Riddell. The Bulls finished the season in sixth and avoided relegation. Tara Murray

Finals-bound Rupo ready to fire on all cylinders Rupertswood believes it is better prepared for finals this year than it was a year ago in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s B-grade competition. The club finished on top of the ladder last season with just two losses but was then surprisingly knocked out by East Sunbury in the semis. A year later, and in the same situation, Rupertswood captain-coach John Lane says he and his players aren’t looking backwards. “It’s a different side,” Lane said. “We have six or seven new faces and the message has been to take it game by game and not look at what happened before. “We’ve been more about processes and
ensuring we’re guaranteed a home final. The boys are looking forward to it.” Rupertswood finished the regular season with an easy win over faltering St Anthonys; it was revenge for the Saints’ one-run win earlier in the season. After clinching a top-two finish weeks ago, St Anthonys lost its last three games and gave Rupertswood the opening to take top spot with Saturday’s victory. Rupertswood made 9-220 on day one on the back of 109 from Chris Ryan. The century was not only his first in 20 years at the club, it also brought him a higher score than his brother, Mark, who made a ton earlier in the season.
In reply, St Anthonys was bowled out for just 108, with Aaron Forward and Brandon Webber claiming three wickets each. Speaking before the second day, Lane said he was pleased with his batsmen’s fightback after being 5-23. “Most sides claim to have a strong batting order and we’ve shown we have one, but our top order has yet to perform at the same time as our middle and lower orders. “We’ve yet to fire on all cylinders.” Lane said there was one major difference from last year’s team. “We’ve dropped two games this season, so consistency has been a big thing the past couple of years,” he said. “Last season we had a couple
of great players, but if they didn’t perform we struggled a bit. “This year we’ve had more options and different combinations. Now we have five or six players who can bat and bowl, which we didn’t have last season.” Rupertswood plays Bacchus Marsh this weekend, while St Anthonys hosts Wallan. Teen talent hits the mark By Tara Murray Clarkefield’s Cody Rodwell has always had ability when it comes to athletics. Joining Sunbury Little Aths when he was in under-6s, Rodwell has been a frequent medal winner in region and state competitions over the years. Now part of a talented group of boys in the under-14 and 15 age groups at Sunbury, Rodwell has stepped out of the shadows of some of his teammates this summer. First, he took out the under-15 Victorian state multi championships, which is in the format of a heptathlon. He finished more than 300 points clear of the second place-getter. “I wasn’t expecting to win the event, so I was shocked to get it,” he said last week. I was just happy to win a medal. My mate [Brennan Wilkins] also competed and finished third. It was a good weekend.” Next, Rodwell stepped up from Little
Athletics to compete in under-17 long jump, javelin and the 100-metre sprint at the 2016 Victorian junior track and field championships. He had most success in an event he usually does more for fun – javelin – finishing second, while he placed fourth in long jump and made the final of the sprint. “You had to place first, second or third to qualify for nationals,” Rodwell said. “It was a shock to go so well and get into the team for Perth. I’m expecting it to be hard in my age group. The best thrower in the group is from Frankston and I know what to expect. He throws it a lot further than me.” Sunbury teammate Melvin Monleh won the under-15 100-metre sprint and will also go to Perth for the national junior titles from March 8-13. Another teammate, Junior Mabia, won four medals at the same national junior titles last year. With his season just beginning, Rodwell, a Maribyrnong College year 10 student, went on
to win these same events – long jump, javelin and 100-metre sprint – at last month’s northern metro region Little Athletics championships, where he broke the region’s record in his favourite event, the long jump. He will compete in all three disciplines at state championships on March 19-20, his last in Little Athletics. “Long jump is my favourite as I’ve been doing it for longer,” he says. “I just know what to expect. The 100 metres was a shock. I felt good and wasn’t expecting to win that.” Rodwell says he wants to at least medal in all three events at the state titles. Sunbury could take home five gold medals in the under-15 age group, with Mabia (shot put) and Wilkins (high jump) having won their events at the region level. Rodwell’s ability isn’t limited to athletics. He’s also highly skilled at baseball and softball, having made Victorian teams in both. “Athletics would be my favourite sport at the moment coz I’m performing well at it.”
Heading into Christmas, Lancefield coach Ash Manning thought his side was looking at a bottom-three finish in the Riddell District Football League in the coming season. “The pre-season started pretty ordinary,” he said last week. “We wanted to recruit a few players but were struggling to find anyone. We couldn’t get the first domino to fall and I was starting to worry.” But now things have turned around, leaving the coach more confident and excited about what’s ahead. “We landed a few players and I’m pretty happy with how we sit,” Manning said. “You hear rumours about other sides and the pressure was on to pick up some players. We’ve got six new players who will be in our best 12 or 15 and it adds more dimension.” Leading the signings is former VFL player Myles Dorman, while former AFL player Cameron Wight comes across from reigning RDFL premiers Romsey. “Cam was tossing up about retirement, as was his brother, Brad, who plays for us. “We asked Brad about getting Cam to play with us and [our full-forward] Jon Kent was important to the process as he and Cam had played together in Greenvale. In the end, the brothers decided they wanted to play together.” Drew Hynninen has come across from Tullamarine, while Seymour duo William Brock and James Wooster look set to be key players this season. Manning said the signings of Wight and Brock would add much-needed height to the side. “Either Cam or Will will play forward when the other one is in the ruck. “We were undersized in the ruck last season. Now we have players 6ft 6in [198cm] and 6ft 7in [200cm] who can give us first use of the ball. Last year we were chasing the ball from the start.” The second-year coach said that as well as gaining new players to the side, many of the existing players had showed a renewed commitment. “I know the competition better and who we have to stop . . . last year we were relying on word of mouth,” he said. “We’ve got a couple of kids who are taking footy more seriously this season who will likely play seniors. “Professionalism is a bit better this year and I think we’ve got through to the group the importance of wanting to train and play senior football.” The club will kick off its season against Woodend Hesket at Gilbert Gordon Oval on April 9.
