Secrets unlocked The epicurean delights of the Macedon Ranges will take centre stage as part of this weekend’s Macedon Ranges Wine and Food Festival. Formerly known as Budburst, the program for the 25th anniversary event includes a visit by wine writer Max Allen, degustation dinners, live music, picnic cricket and the chance to sample vintages from 30 local wineries. Hanging Rock Winery sales and marketing manager Ruth Ellis says the fact the Macedon Ranges’ winemaking prowess remains something of a secret actually plays into the festival’s hands. ‘‘We’re the same distance from Melbourne as the Yarra Valley, but because we haven’t got big conglomerates, we don’t get quite the same attention,’’ she says. ‘‘But we find it’s a bit like in Melbourne, all the best bars are the ones down hidden laneways. People tend to love that ‘I’ve been somewhere you haven’t’ type of thing. ‘‘We don’t get the busloads of hen’s parties and so on, but it makes for a really nice family atmosphere.’’ Hanging Rock Winery’s barrel hall, usually an industrial space, will morph into a venue with wine, Hanging Rock beef, a barbecue, live music and even a warehouse sale. By Matt Crossman Teammates of a Sunbury cricketer who is undergoing chemotherapy in a London hospital are hoping for wide community support for a charity event raising money to help bring him home. Jessy Carroll, 24, was about six months into a dream backpacking trip around Europe when he was diagnosed with stage 4 non-Hodgkin B cell lymphoma. East Sunbury Cricket Club spokesman Keith Osborne said the allrounder went for a check-up about a month ago after feeling lethargic.
‘‘Because it was a stage 4 cancer, they started chemotherapy almost straight away,’’ Osborne said. ‘‘They’ve been trying to get him fit enough to fly but obviously it’s quite an intensive process.’’ Jessy’s mother has flown to England to be by his side as his treatment continues. Osborne said the club hoped an event at Goonawarra Reserve this Saturday night would pay for Jessy, his mum and a nurse to fly to Melbourne before Christmas. The fundraiser will include an auction, raffle and barbecue. Osborne described Jessy as a ‘‘real character’’
who had quickly matured into a leader of the six-year-old club. ‘‘He’s been there since the start and has become one of our real role models,” he said. ‘‘I’ve seen him grow beyond his years … he’s really come of age.’’ Jessy’s brother, Shane, said the club’s efforts would help make a tough journey a little easier. ‘‘We’re just so appreciative of all that they’re doing,’’ he said. ‘‘He’s just so well loved. Sunbury ‘not suffering’ for funds By Matt Crossman Hume council has promised to ensure Sunbury continues to receive a fair deal in future budgets. With the question of an independent Sunbury settled, for now, chief executive Domenic Isola said the town has not suffered as a result of the uncertainty of recent years. ‘‘I don’t like the notion that we haven’t looked after it, because we have,’’ he said. Mr Isola said the council would continue to look after the municipality as a whole when preparing budgets, allocating capital works funding on an as-needs basis.
‘‘There’s always people peeking over the back fence to see what someone else has got, but we sit there and look at what is the highest priority.’’ The previous government’s gazettal of orders for a new Sunbury council was formally rescinded last week. Mr Isola said the council was working on plans for a global learning centre and heated hydrotherapy pool in Sunbury. ‘‘We’re also looking at what we do with a third [railway] crossing and carparking. ‘All of these projects get put onto an overall list and the councillors go through with the officers’ assistance and look at the highest priorities.’’
Sunbury Residents Association president Bernie O’Farrell said people wanted to see a greater focus on Sunbury’s needs in future budgets. ‘‘We don’t accept the auditors’ findings … our expectation is that, while we remain part of Hume, the town will get its fair share.’’ Mr O’Farrell said inadequate carparking remained a perennial problem. As reported by Star Weekly in June, the council defended claims its 2015-16 budget was too focused on the east of the municipality. Cr Jack Ogilvie voted against the budget, saying there was little in it for Sunbury. He claimed
‘‘all the big money’’ was being spent in areas such as Craigieburn. Mr Isola pointed to plans for a new warm water pool at Sunbury Aquatic Centre ($400,000), new civic centre designs ($2 million) and reconstruction of a Wildwood Road bridge. A total of $1.75 million has been set aside to redevelop Clarke Oval’s McMahon pavilion, and $650,000 for the refurbishment of the Langama Park pavilion. Sunbury Community Progress Association previously said it believed the town continued to get a fair deal.
Climate action call to council A group calling for more action on climate change will present a 3500-signature petition to Macedon Ranges council this Tuesday. The Macedon Ranges Green Energy Coalition wants the council to commit to becoming carbon neutral by 2020. The group is seeking a stand-alone climate change policy and recommends the installation of solar panels on all council buildings, at an estimated cost of $1 million. Coalition co-ordinator Rob Bakes said supporters were being encouraged to make colourful banners and attend Tuesday’s petition handover in Kyneton ahead of a ‘‘People’s Climate Rally’’ through the streets of the town on November 29. Mr Bakes said people were frustrated that various levels of government were still merely talking about action on climate change. ‘‘If we can get ordinary citizens to advise their elected representatives in a serious way, where they will take notice of it, then we’ll get better outcomes,’’ he said. The council has previously said calls for emissions reduction targets and the installation of solar panels would be considered as part of its new environment strategy but the coalition’s suggested timeframe was ‘‘not feasible’’. Vegan power helps with uphill battle Romsey’s Sabrina Parrini is preparing to race up Australia’s tallest building for the second time – and this time she will compete as a vegan. Ms Parrini, who credits the switch to an animal product-free diet for leaving her feeling less sluggish, has stepped up her training regime for this year’s Eureka Climb. More than 2500 people have entered Sunday’s 88-floor event, which raises money for youth charity Whitelion and Interplast Australia. Ms Parrini says weekly trips to the CBD for formal training arranged by event organisers have helped her preparation. ‘‘I’ve never done formal training like this, so that’s been really helpful, just to get you into that mindset,’’ she says. ‘‘In previous years I’ve just been going down Hanging Rock and doing a lot of training outdoors. “But this year it’s included stairwells and that sort of thing.’’ Having previously competed as a vegetarian, Ms Parrini says her plant-based diet hasn’t hindered performance. ‘‘I feel a little bit sore the day after training, but it seems to disappear pretty quickly.’’ To donate, visit goo.gl/ZDnCn4. Mums face PND best together By Matt Crossman Many women experience some form of ‘‘baby blues’’ in the days after having a child. But when Sunbury’s Leanne Schultz gave birth to her daughter almost 12 years ago, she became enveloped by something quite different. ‘‘She was born on a Monday and I started crying on the Wednesday, and it just didn’t stop,’’ Ms Schultz says. ‘‘By the time she was 10 days old, I had a brief episode of psychosis.’’ After a stay in hospital, Ms Schultz began attending Sunbury Community Health’s ‘‘mother to mother’’ post-natal depression (PND) support group. She says the non-judgmental nature of the peer to peer group was crucial to her recovery. Women who have experienced the lifesaving assistance provided by the group are being invited to a reunion this Wednesday. The group was run out of the Macedon Street centre for 24 years before going into hiatus in March. Ms Schultz, whose daughter Angela turns 12 this week, said while she had been referred to a psychiatrist and put on medication, it wasn’t until she connected with SCH counsellor Terrie Hollingsworth that things began to really improve. ‘‘The group became my lifeline. We didn’t have any family here,’’ she said. ‘‘They say it takes a village to raise a child. We didn’t have a village, but we formed one there.’’ Ms Schultz, who has gone on to complete a psychology degree and now works as a counsellor, said the group helped create real and lasting relationships. ‘‘My best friends are women who were in that group when our children were babies. ‘‘It’s the power of peer support. What’s behind PND might be different for every woman, but
at the end of it, every woman there is having a terrible time.’’ SCH’s Ms Hollingsworth said she had no doubt the group had saved the lives of a number of women, with some actively suicidal when they were first referred. Members frequently maintained contact in between meetings and, after the advent of social media, kept in touch via a closed Facebook group. ‘‘It allowed women to feel safe enough to disclose what they thought were really quite frightening thoughts and experiences about motherhood,’’ Ms Hollingsworth said.

‘‘They gained a tremendous amount of reassurance and learnt to trust themselves and their own abilities by being able to share those fears.’’ The group was put on hold due to declining numbers, but Ms Hollingsworth hopes something similar will take its place. Both Ms Schultz and Ms Hollingsworth said while online forums could be helpful, nothing could replace face to face contact. Ms Hollingsworth said the pressure on mothers and the stigma surrounding PND hadn’t changed from one generation to the next. ‘‘It’s subtle, but it’s there,’’ she said. ‘‘PND is not restricted to first-time mothers … it can happen to anybody.’’ The reunion is at 12-28 Macedon Street from 10am-noon this Wednesday. Payne and gain for Cup Melbourne Cup-winning jockey Michelle Payne’s dramatic arrival added to the colour and excitement of Wednesday’s Kyneton Cup. A crowd of almost 5000 people cheered as Payne alighted from a helicopter that flew her in from metropolitan media commitments in the wake of her surprise win last Tuesday. ‘‘It was like she was Princess Di,’’ Kyneton and Hanging Rock Racing Club chief executive Jon Dight said of the welcome for Payne. Cheers turned into a roar during the 2000m main event, with the Payne-ridden Akzar getting the run of the rail at the final turn. But New Zealand-trained Tristam’s Sun finished strongly to claim a second-straight Kyneton Cup.
The Robbie Laing-trained horse finished well ahead of Tilla Bell Rings and Our Voodoo Prince. Police welcome welfare review By Matt Crossman Hume’s Acting Inspector Anthony Brown has welcomed a statewide review into the mental health and wellbeing of Victoria Police staff. The study will look at how the organisation can best support officers during and after their careers. It follows a series of suicides involving serving and retired officers. Hume police will also take part in a separate welfare study being undertaken by Deakin University that will help identify early warning
signs of debilitating conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder. Acting Inspector Brown said police were not immune to the distressing scenes they were frequently exposed to. ‘‘Things like severe car accidents and domestic violence, which they are seeing far too much of … on a daily basis they are placed into these situations,’’ he said. ‘‘As a result, there can be major ramifications for their health.’’ Acting Inspector Brown said while existing welfare networks were solid, Victoria Police

was committed to ensuring it was providing the best possible support. In Hume, local peer support is available 24 hours. The Police Association also offers its own welfare services. ‘‘Our managers are also really welfare oriented and really supportive of staff,’’ Acting
Inspector Brown said. ‘‘The last thing we want is anyone going home in a worse condition than what they arrived in and mental health is a big part of that.’’ The review team, including clinical and organisational psychologist Peter Cotton, retired superintendent Peter Bull and healthcare executive Nancy Hogan, will report by the end of January. Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton said traumatic experiences often had a cumulative effect that could impact officers for the rest of their lives.
New-look Nook A popular Sunbury park is expected to stay green throughout the year after an irrigation system was installed as part of a recent upgrade. A shelter, picnic table, seats and a drinking fountain, including a dog’s bowl, have also been added at the Nook Bicentennial Park on Vaughan Street. Hume mayor Helen Patsikatheodorou says the new irrigation system is ‘‘a big deal’’. ‘‘It means that the grass and plants at the park will be green and healthy, even in the height of summer,’’ she says. ‘‘Our officers have also added some new turf around the shelter to improve the park’s appearance.’’ Sunbury resident Barry Watson says the

Road work slashes fire risks By Matt Crossman Grass and trees will be trimmed and roadsides ploughed in coming weeks as VicRoads finishes its Macedon Ranges’ bushfire fuel reduction program. North-central regional director Mal Kersting said contractors had been working south from the Mallee, targeting high-risk roadsides ahead of what’s expected to be an ‘‘above normal’’ fire season. He said VicRoads, which manages more than 4000 kilometres of arterial roads in the north-central area, had worked with agencies
including the CFA, the Department of Land, Environment, Water and Planning (DELWP) and councils to designate areas needing extra prevention works. ‘‘By slashing roadside grass, there is less likelihood of fires taking off or gaining momentum, while a wide, clear road like the Calder Freeway can provide a type of firebreak,’’ he said. Mr Kersting said VicRoads had completed clearing works in 45 per cent of the targeted areas, including significant stretches of the Calder and Hume freeways. Road and Mount Macedon Road will start this week. Macedon Ranges council is almost six weeks into its own roadside program, having started in October, a month earlier than usual. Council assets and operations director Dale Thornton said the initial focus was on areas in the north and east of the shire, which are
known to dry out more quickly. The council is responsible for about 1700 kilometres of roads. In the wake of the recent Lancefield bushfire, the CFA used Fire Action Week to urge people in regional areas to understand the local risks. ‘‘It’s a great time to increase your understanding of the fire risk where you live,’’ a CFA spokesman said. ‘‘Take the time to prepare your property, and talk to your family and friends about what you plan to do if a fire is nearby.’’ A report into the Lancefield fire, which began as a DELWP fuel reduction burn, is expected to be released this month.

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir delights in yum cha from an ‘unreal’ joint One member of today’s Team Consider the Sauce grew up with yum cha. She’s very open to all sorts of food experiences, and has a cracking sense of humor. But she reckons Andy’s – which has long been on the CTS “to do” list – is not really a real yum cha joint. I know what she means. It comes across as your average humble suburban Chinese eatery. And certainly there are no yum cha trolleys whizzing every which-way. I find the meal at this Essendon yum cha outpost to be very good indeed. Andy’s is situated in a smallish Essendon neighbourhood that has some good eateries. My companions enjoy our meal, too, though my enthusiasm seems to be on another level entirely. My worst case scenario had been that the dumplings offered here would display the tell-tale signs of mass production and have come from plastic bags, frozen then steamed. But what we are served I find to be excellent. Our dumplings – containing all the expected ingredients, such as prawns, pork, coriander and more – evince a range of textures and flavours that I really adore. A high point is the greens with oyster sauce – it’s expertly done and easy to eat. Also impressive are the pork ribs in black bean sauce and steamed pork buns – these latter are usually Bennie’s domain, but here even I am wowed. We eat very well and the price ends up being a wonderful $15 each.

SPORT Cannons’ star waits for AFL call By Tara Murray Hisham Kerbatieh’s goal this season was to make the Calder Cannons’ squad. Having been part of the TAC Cup club’s grand final side last year, this year was about wanting to improve his game. He had no trouble making the squad, and soon gained attention beyond the Cannons, making the Vic Metro team and being invited to the national draft combine. To top it off, later this month he could find himself on an AFL list. “It wasn’t too bad a season,” Kerbatieh said last week. “It’s been a bit of a challenging year, as we weren’t as strong as a team. “On an individual basis, I could’ve done a
bit more, kicking a few more goals. From a team aspect, it would have been good to get a few more wins.” Kerbatieh’s biggest improvement this season has been his consistency and fitness. The Meadow Heights resident also revelled in being a leader with the Cannons. “At the start of the pre-season, it was about getting my fitness levels up to play a bit more in the midfield,” he said. “I loved it and I wanted to play in the midfield more. “I liked being in the leadership group and got to be a bit more of a leader. “I used what I went through as a bottom-ager, and tried to implement it.” After setting small goals in the pre-season, he was surprised he was chosen to be part of
the Vic Metro team, and played four games at the national carnival. “It was a good feeling to play for the team – a real honour.” Kerbatieh was just as surprised to be invited to the national combine last month. “It was a bit nerve-wracking. “It was a long couple of days, with skills tests, running, psyche tests and interviews. It was exciting times. I had four to five clubs speak to me.” For now it’s a waiting game until the national AFL draft on November 24. The rookie and pre-season draft will happen three days later. “It’s just about waiting, as I don’t know if I’ll be picked up,” Kerbatieh said. “I’ve been training a little bit and I’ve got a
trainer, who has been trying to teach me about endurance running. I’ll also have a little bit of time off to spend with my family.” Kerbatieh knows that if he doesn’t get drafted it’s not the end of the world. One of his mentors, Adam Saad, came through the VFL system before being drafted by the Gold Coast Suns. “If I don’t get drafted, I’ll go to Coburg [in the VFL] and keep trying to get to the AFL,” Kerbatieh said. “I’ve been lucky; Adam Saad and Bachar Houli [Richmond defender] have been my mentors this year. “I’ve been asking them how the system works. “They both came into the system from different avenues.”
Rupo recovers to be in line for fourth win Rupertswood has started 2015-16 where it left off last season in the Gisborne and District cricket B-grade competition. After dominating the regular season last season, Rupo has started with three wins from three matches. And it’s on track to add a fourth to that tally after day one of the match against Bacchus Marsh. Sent into bat at Rupertswood Oval, Rupo was in trouble at 4-47 before the middle and lower orders rescued the innings and pushed the total to 8-233. Lachlan McLean backed up his 49 not out from the previous match with 70 not out. Skipper John Lane made 48 batting at number nine before being run out. The other undefeated side in B-grade, St Anthonys, is also in the box seat for at least first innings points, this time against the winless Ashfield. After winning the toss and choosing to bat, St Anthonys made 9-302 off its 75 overs. Captain Jamie Bogler led the way with an unbeaten 119 and figured in a stand of 170 for the sixth wicket with Jason Orr (70). Matthew Bulluss was the best of the Ashfield bowlers with 5-87. Lancefield and Macedon are both looking for their first win of the season in their match at Lancefield Oval. Macedon won the toss, and at 2-24 it looked as though it may have been the wrong decision. But opener Chris Axton and Taylor Stevenson settled the innings and when Axton was out for 51, captain Gary De Rosayro joined the party. At 4-201, Macedon looked set to launch some late-innings hitting, but it lost 4-4 to finish at 8-210. Lancefield captain-coach Luke Barker was the only multiple wicket taker. In the other match, East Sunbury will have to make its highest score of the season so far to beat Wallan. Coming off its first loss of the season, Wallan posted a handy 8-203 from its 75 overs. Matty Bell passed 20 for the first time this season before being run out for 57. Joel Gilder, with 39, was the only other player to pass 20 for Wallan. Women’s pride in performance When Sunbury Lions’ captain Beck Anstey decided to enter a team in the Netball Victoria Masters Super 7’s competition last Sunday, she didn’t have to look far for teammates. The first place she looked for 3E Lions members was from among current and former Sunbury Lions colleagues. “I started with the Sunbury Lions girls like Lisa [Romanski], Jen Lewis, myself and Prue [Stanley],” Anstey said. “Only two players in the team hadn’t been involved with the Lions, but I’d played with them over the years. And once I put a team in, I wanted to win.” Entered in the over-30s competitive division, the team had to adapt to the super 7’s rules. “This is the first year they’ve used this format,” Anstey said. “There’s a power play in the first and second halves; goals are doubled when you have a power play and you get three points for goals shot from outside the circle. “We went with three tall goal shooters in our squad instead of having a shorter, dodging fast goal attack. Our midcourt was really quick instead. It was all a bit strategic.” The Lions made the grand final but entered the game as underdogs after losing to Power in the round robin stage. “They made us look silly in the second round,” Anstey said. “They had a team full of former state league players.” Luck went the way of the Lions in the final, which they won 28-15. The 11 winning athletes and all the club’s placegetters have qualified for the national championships being held in Melbourne later this month. “Last year we had seven or eight athletes compete at the national championships,” Wilson said. “We had a couple of seconds and thirds. “Hopefully, this year we can get our first national champion.” Wilson paid tribute to club instructor Garry Boog. “He has basically guided the club to where it is today.”

Gisborne is again looking for a new senior football coach after Jeff Gieschen decided he was unable to take on the job. A week and a half ago, the Bulldogs announced the former Richmond coach and AFL umpires boss as its coach for next year’s Bendigo Football League season. In a statement on Friday, the Bulldogs said the intensity of the role would be too much for Gieschen. “Jeff has been successfully recovering from some past health issues and was excited about getting back into coaching,” the statement said. “However, in the first week it became clear that the intensity of the role was not going to be good for his ongoing recovery and thus he had to make the call that his health had to take priority.” An apologetic Gieschen said he had dearly wanted to help Gisborne move forward. “On reflection, my decision to coach was based on the emotion of assisting the club through a tough period and not on whether I thought I was the right person for the job,” he said. “In being honest with myself, at this stage of my life I realise that I’m more suited to behind-the-scenes support roles than the extremely intense role that senior, high-level coaching encompasses.” The Bulldogs said Gieschen would continue to assist the club off field.

Coach steps aside after two flags in two years Dean Helmers couldn’t have asked for much more in his two years as coach of the Romsey Football Club. A perfect season in his first year at the Riddell District Football League club was followed by a second premiership 12 months later. But now Helmers has decided to step away from the Redbacks. “I’ve decided to have a year off and have some spare time again,” Helmers told Star Weekly. “I love doing it, but it takes so much time. It’s time to give a bit back to the family and that’s pretty exciting.” Helmers said he couldn’t have imagined the success the club would have in the two years. “I’m thrilled with that outcome and it’s nothing to be scoffed at,” he said. “In the first year we won every game and that puts more pressure on the staff and players to
keep winning. This year was more pleasing for me as we played so many young players and locals. We weren’t always favourites, but we seemed to get the job done.” Helmers says he still has the fire in the belly to coach. “I’ve had quite a few offers, but I haven’t given any thought to them at this stage,” he said. “I’ll have more idea in four to six weeks what will be happening with work and family commitments. I’ll never coach if I can’t give 100 per cent.” Redbacks president Wayne Milburn said the club couldn’t have asked for any more from Helmers. “The last couple of years have been fantastic and Dean has been sensational,” Milburn said. “With a new job and new baby he just couldn’t commit to the role 100 per cent.”
The club has started the hunt for a new coach and a reserves coach. This year’s under-16 coach, Adam Rademaker, will coach the under-18s next year. “We hope to start interviews soon and have someone appointed by the middle of November – the end of November at the latest,” Milburn said. “What sort of coach we get depends on the interviews. We’d like one with experience.” The Redbacks are also looking for an A-grade netball coach for next season. And they will hold netball player try-outs for next season for all four senior age groups on November 26, December 3 and December 10. Coin toss sets Burras up By Tara Murray It was fourth time lucky for Diggers Rest Bulla after finally winning the toss and taking the chance to bat first in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s McIntyre Cup. The Burras batted second in the first three rounds, managing no more than 162 in any of their innings. On Saturday against Romsey they made 217. Burras’ coach Kevin Barker said it was nice to get some runs on the board. “The boys were starting to give it to Rhys [Berry] about not being able to win a toss,” he said. “It’s a good score on that ground as they’ve had a few problems with how it’s been mown. “There was a lot of grass clippings and it was really slow. On that surface, the score is
worth more like 260.” Barker led the way for the Burras, making 79. “It’s been a pretty lean start to the season. I was super-happy to get a good knock.” Mark Jackson chipped in with 48. The score puts the Burras in a good spot to get a third win from the first four rounds. In the previous two matches they restricted Sunbury United and Woodend to fewer than 100. “If we bowl and field well, I’m confident we can get the win.” Barker said the competition was set to be tighter than in recent years. “There’s normally four or five sides fighting for finals,” Barker said. “This year, there could be six or seven teams fighting for finals spots. “Getting wins early in the season is very important, especially with the calibre of sides
in the competition.” Barker said the players had taken the step from B-grade to McIntyre Cup in their stride. “It’s a really tight bunch of guys at the moment, a team that’s gelled well. “Every wicket, run and game is important to everyone.” Barker said he was settling well into the club in his first season at the helm. “I’ve been lucky; there are guys I’m playing with who I’ve known since I was five. “I was prepared for the adjustment, coming from sub-district cricket to hard wickets,” he said. “I’m lucky that I played 10-15 years on hard wicket.” Elsewhere, Sunbury United needs 233 for victory against Bacchus Marsh; Gisborne is 1-6 chasing Sunbury’s 9-152; and Riddell made 198 against Woodend.
Sunbury Bowling Club’s Bob Carlson took up bowls umpiring initially to help improve his own game. Already in love with bowls, which he has played for 28 years, Carlson soon fell into officiating the game. “My participation in bowls has always been social,” he said. “Initially, I wanted to get a better understanding of the laws, and that has opened up so many opportunities to become more involved in an official role. “There’s been lots of travel, especially in the past two years.” Since starting his umpiring in 2004, Carlson has travelled the world to umpire and is now a member of the Bowls Victoria laws and rules committee and chairman of the Northern Gateway regional umpiring committee. Late last month, he was named ‘official of the year’ at the Bowls Australia awards night. He was nominated for the award by fellow Sunbury member Mark Cowan. Carlson attended the awards night knowing he was one of the two finalists for the award. “I’m very privileged and honoured to have won it,” he said. He says the greatest thrill of his umpiring role is getting to see the world’s best bowlers in action. “I’ve been to two Commonwealth Games and to world championships. “You get to help players make decisions and it’s also about the opportunity to witness the highest level of participation. “Bowls caters for all levels – social as you like or you can have a professional commitment.” Carlson says he has no plans of stepping back from his involvement in bowls any time soon. “I want to continue to operate at the highest level, which I believe I can do for a long time yet.” There was no bowls at the weekend for Sunbury, with all competitions suspended because of the Victorian Open. Reigning Victorian Open women’s champion Carla Odgers and her Sunbury teammate Elise Cowan are through to the last 16 of the women’s competition as is Kyneton’s Chloe Stewart. Sunbury’s Damien Hoder is through to the final 32 of the men’s singles. Tara Murray
