The department has copped extreme criticism after it was revealed firefighters who were meant to be on standby for the planned burn may have been deployed elsewhere. Landholders in the area have also claimed that trucks left near the site along Lancefield-Cobaw Crozier Track were not
staffed on the grand final public holiday. But Mr Goodwin said extensive work had gone into planning the burn, and he denied the fire had been unattended at any stage. Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas said it was ‘‘unacceptable that locals have been put in this position’’. She welcomed the appointment of Lancefield Neighbourhood House co-ordinator Vivien Philpotts as a member of the government’s independent investigation
panel, as Ms Philpotts urged people to make their voices heard, and tell their stories. Premier Daniel Andrews and Opposition Leader Matthew Guy, who both visited the town on Thursday, said people had every right to be angry. All prescribed burns scheduled for the Macedon Ranges this spring will be reviewed after a 3000-hectare blaze near Lancefield put hundreds of houses in the firing line. The Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) made the promise on Friday in response to community outrage over the planned burn in the Cobaw Ranges, which jumped containment lines on grand final day, and again last Tuesday. As reported by Star Weekly online, furious residents have called for ‘‘heads to roll’’ at DELWP. On Friday, Lancefield agronomist James Almond was one of many people who demanded to know why department secretary Adam Fennessy and Environment Minister Lisa Neville had yet to front a public meeting and apologise. ‘‘If I don’t liaise with my clients, I get sacked,’’ he said. Criticising the department’s communication process before the September 30 burn, Mr Almond also slammed DELWP for previously saying conditions were suitable. ‘‘It wasn’t appropriate to light a fire in El Nino conditions,’’ he said. ‘‘All my clients are cutting crops because they’ve got no soil moisture, and then the department lights a fire? We’ve known about this for six months.’’ A DELWP spokesman said Mr Fennessy and Ms Neville were expected to appear in Lancefield on Monday. The state government has commissioned a full investigation into the escaped burn, which has destroyed at least four houses. However, many people fear that while the probe will be critical of prescribed burning practices, nobody will truly be held to account. Feeneys Lane resident Chris Jolly said somebody had to take responsibility. ‘‘If it was me and somebody said ‘in four days’ time you’re going to get 30-degree days and strong winds’, I would say don’t light it. It’s just so stupid.’’ Properties from the edge of Lancefield through to Benloch, Pastoria East, Pastoria, Nulla Vale, Baynton and Emu Flat have been threatened by the blaze. Many thousands of litres of already scarce water has also been drained from dams. As the fire raged, community meetings held in Lancefield heard from countless residents – some yelling, others in tears, and all angry that the community was in the path of a blaze that should never have happened.

Ranges fire takes emotional toll By Matt Crossman Residents affected by the devastating Cobaw Ranges blaze have heaped praise on firefighters for going above and beyond the call of duty in their efforts to protect lives and property. The fire, which has destroyed up to four houses, many sheds, several vehicles, farm machinery and kilometres of fencing, was 95 per cent controlled when Star Weekly went to print. Information from the Gisborne control centre showed the blaze, initially thought to have covered more than 4000 hectares, had
been downgraded to 3000 hectares. Mild weather conditions allowed authorities to ramp up efforts to back-burn and use bulldozers to create a track around the 60-kilometre fire front. Charlotte Burns, who runs Weekaway Recreational Camp in Kitchenhams Lane, said the fire came within 500 metres of her house. Buildings at the school camp site were not damaged, but large stretches of fencing will have to be replaced. ‘‘I can’t speak highly enough of the guys and girls in the CFA,’’ Ms Burns said. ‘‘They’ve been on our property constantly, stopping ember
attacks. They’ve been absolutely amazing,’’ she said. A CFA volunteer was close to tears after repeatedly trying to enter a fire-affected road to check on a resident, who was believed to be in their home, before finding out they were safe. ‘‘They just do whatever it takes,’’ Ms Burns said. She said the emotional burden of the week was starting to hit many people. ‘‘I’ve been calm and controlled since Tuesday, but I woke up on Friday and I was really emotional.’’ Chris Jolly, who has a house on Feeneys Lane, said he still didn’t know how his property
had been affected. The Lancefield painter had been sleeping on a friend’s couch since the blaze began. Mr Jolly said he and his wife had decided to move closer to town. ‘‘We can’t do this any more.’’ Authorities hoped to control the blaze by Sunday. They said they had little confidence in predictions of storm activity heading into the weekend but would continue to check conditions on the hour. Assessment teams will continue to scour the area, entering affected properties when it is safe to do so.
Full ban’s back as fire season starts early Relaxed burn-off restrictions, designed to give residents on blocks less than 4000 square metres more time to prepare for the fire season, have been cancelled by Macedon Ranges council. In the wake of the Lancefield fire and a series of private burn-offs that got out of control early last week, the council has reversed its decision to allow a one-month grace period during October. This means no one is permitted to burn off. A council spokeswoman said conditions would be reassessed this week. Firefighters were called to at least half a dozen incidents in Woodend, Kyneton, Lancefield and Sunbury after the grand final long weekend. Mountain group CFA spokesman Mike Dornau told Star Weekly firefighters had dealt with ‘‘reignitions’’ across the area. ‘‘What’s happened is people have lit them on the weekend and not put them out properly, then the wind picks up,’’ Mr Dornau said. ‘‘The regulations are that if you light a fire you must ensure you put it out, and continue to monitor it for a few days. ‘‘You’ve really got to say now, we’re in for a hell of a season. We’re six weeks ahead of where we normally are.’’ CFA chief officer Euan Ferguson urged landholders everywhere to ensure their properties were fire-ready. ‘‘There is still green grass around. but that grass has cured off significantly in the past few days,’’ he said. ‘‘The fire season is here.’’

Lancefield’s pub put on a free barbecue as people huddled in the centre of town. Generosity has continued in the days that have followed. The town’s op shop has received many donations of clothing for people unable to return to their homes. Cafes have offered free coffee to firefighters, and a recovery centre in the Mechanics Institute has taken a steady flow of inquiries from residents offering paddocks to relocate horses. Lions Club and Salvation Army volunteers have kept hundreds of fireys fed and watered at the Lancefield staging grounds.

Amid the fear and frustration of the bushfire that’s torn through the Cobaw Ranges, many examples of selflessness and charity are emerging. From neighbours helping to hose down each other’s properties or beat off flames, to residents inside Lancefield’s town limits offering rooms and even houses to those displaced by the blaze, there’s been no shortage of people willing to lend a hand. As the drama unfolded last Tuesday, elderly Lancefield residents who could not drive were taken to a relief centre in Gisborne on the back of a fire truck.

Health profiles have sickly hue By Alexandra Laskie and Matthew Crossman One in four Hume residents is obese. A new health snapshot for the north-western Melbourne region reveal the grim statistic among a host of other health indicators that have Hume medical practitioners worried. Neil Cowen, chief executive of Broadmeadows-based not-for-profit health provider Dianella, said the figures did not come as a surprise but reinforced the magnitude of the health provider’s workload.
“There are no surprises because Dianella knows that people living in Hume have very poor health outcomes compared to the Melbourne average,” he said. “Obesity rates correlate to the social determinates of health, such as a person’s income or level of education.” The health snapshot was the first report released by the federal government’s new North Western Melbourne Primary Health Network, one of 31 networks set up to replace the now defunct Medicare Locals. The networks are designed to work with doctors and other health providers, such
as hospitals, to ensure better outcomes for patients. Hume’s snapshot reveals that 26.1 per cent of women and 26.9 per cent of men are obese, compared to the state average of 17.2 and 17.4 per cent respectively. More than 19 per cent of residents smoke, and 21.8 per cent reported their health status as ‘fair’ or ‘poor’. The fact sheet gave Hume’s rating for chronic disease prevalence, disability, lifestyle risk factors, reported dental health, reported health status, premature mortality and child and mental health as “negative”.
In Hume, there are 7.3 diabetics per 100,000 people, compared to the Victorian average of 4.7 people per 100,000. Dr Cowen described diabetes as an epidemic in Hume. “We’ve got a diabetes crisis and it leads to a whole range of other complications like blindness and amputations.” Figures for the Macedon Ranges reveal 28.7 per cent of women are overweight, higher than the state average of 24.6. Fifty-four per cent of residents are at risk of short-term harm from alcohol, compared to the national average of 45.3.
Town gives back to Jack Hume councillor Jack Ogilvie plans to appear at a charity ball that will raise money for his recovery from a severe stroke. Organising committee spokesman Adam Mizzi said Sunbury-based Cr Ogilvie, who is still undergoing extensive rehabilitation, was looking forward to the event at Pitruzzello Estate on October 17. ‘‘It was a bit emotional for him when we put the billboards up around town,’’ Mr Mizzi said. ‘‘There’s been a few tears and a lot of gratitude from Jack.’’ Cr Ogilvie was paralysed on his left side after suffering a stroke on July 6. Doctors are said to be amazed at the initial recovery of Cr Ogilvie, who many years ago beat a cancer that was considered terminal. More than $50,000 in goods and services has been donated for an auction on the night. ‘‘He’s dedicated 24 years of his life … not everyone has always agreed with him, but
there’s no arguing he’s done so much for the town,’’ Mr Mizzi said. Seekers star Athol Guy and racing identity Jo McKinnon, comedians and roving magicians will appear at the $135-a-head event, which is being supported by Essendon Football Club. The Melbourne Cup will be available for photographs, thanks to Eales Racing Syndications. Hume council has bought multiple tables. Wife Lesley recently told Star Weekly that Cr Ogilvie had been “blown away” by the support, and said he was progressing relatively well. Mrs Ogilvie said the former mayor remained ‘‘the same old Jack’’ despite mobility problems. ‘‘His mind, his memory, his speech are fantastic,’’ she said. Donations of goods are still being taken. Cannabis cure ‘too far away’ A Mia Mia mother who uses cannabis to treat her daughter’s severe epilepsy says changes to allow parents to legally access locally manufactured medical marijuana from 2017 are too far away – and will not go far enough anyway. The state government last week confirmed that it fully accepted 40 recommendations from a Victorian Law Reform Commission (VLRC) report tabled in Parliament. A cultivation trial at a Victorian research facility will start shortly, after the government decided to allow parents access to medicinal cannabis for children with severe epilepsy. Eventually, growers will be licensed by the Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources. But Cherie O’Connell, whose daughter Tara has been seizure-free since a few days after she was first administered cannabis in April 2013, said there needs to be legal protection for families already using the drug to relieve pain and treat life-threatening conditions. Tara used to have up to several hundred seizures a day before she was first given medical marijuana. ‘‘I personally won’t be moving to a government-approved product,’’ Ms O’Connell said. ‘‘I want recognition of the products we’re already accessing. What we are using is one particular strain. We’ve been two and a half
years seizure free. Why would you want to mess with that?’’ Ms O’Connell said, until now, families using medicinal cannabis didn’t know if and when they could be charged. ‘‘It’s still only being done unofficially,’’ she said. ‘‘I’m not asking for the products we use to necessarily be regulated. “We just want to be able to have the same right to access.

It’s a great start but there’s more to be done.’’ The VLRC report also recommended that access be extended to people suffering severe muscle spasms or severe pain due to multiple sclerosis, severe pain and other symptoms caused by cancer and AIDS, and severe chronic pain, after getting approval of two specialists. Health Minister Jill Hennessy said evidence was growing about the positive effects of medicinal cannabis on patients’ quality of life. ‘‘Children with severe epilepsy will be the first to access medicinal cannabis because their condition can be life-threatening, and it may be their last treatment option.’’

Twin careers, one goal A Gisborne nurse, who has been assessing and tending to the health needs of patients for close to 25 years, is in the running for a major national award. Woodend resident Jane Goldsmith, who splits her time between being a general practice nurse at Gisborne Medical Clinic and a midwife at Kilmore Hospital, will travel to Brisbane on Thursday night as a finalist in the Australian Nursing Awards. Ms Goldsmith says her nomination in the nurse of the year category came as a complete surprise. ‘‘It’s nice, but I really feel in many ways that I’m representing other nurses,’’ she says.
Ms Goldsmith was nominated for her work to develop local nurse networks, providing support to and mentoring other nurses. She also helped establish immunisation and PapScreen clinics. Ms Goldsmith says that while nursing remains hard work, she’s grateful to have a job she can be passionate about. ‘‘There’s the variety, the diversity, but essentially it’s the ability to make a difference to people’s lives at a time when they might be quite vulnerable. ‘‘It’s an incredibly special job.’’ Matt Crossman

Gisborne Secondary College will receive an extra $50,000 towards a new performing arts centre, Macedon Labor MP Mary-Anne Thomas revealed last week. The money, in addition to $78,000 for general maintenance, will be added to fundraising efforts, including a sponsorship program designed by students. Tributes marking the 100th anniversary of the Anzacs were also a focal point of this year’s event, which drew thousands of people to Sunbury Recreation Reserve. Agricultural society president Tony McMahon said, while crowd numbers were down slightly due to predicted storm activity, those who made it to the show were treated to a good day. Appearances by the Creswick Light Horse Troop proved especially popular. ‘‘Even their uniforms, right down to their buttons and bootstraps, they were just impeccable,’’ Mr McMahon said. The event also recognised heroes of more recent wars, with local national servicemen guests of honour at a show day luncheon. ‘‘They were happy to be there. As we know, Vietnam veterans were treated appallingly when they returned, so we just wanted to show in a small way that we appreciate what they did, just like those who served in other conflicts,’’ Mr McMahon said. Horse and livestock events, poultry shows, an arts pavilion, sideshows and a treasure trail catered to many interests, while truck and classic car displays had plenty of fans. Mr McMahon said the combined efforts of the show’s 100 or so volunteers ensured things went off without a hitch. ‘‘There’s so much planning that goes into it, but those people make it all happen on the day,’’ he said. ‘‘We all slept pretty well on Saturday night.’’ Picture gallery: www.starweekly.com.au

Fossils surface at show Lancefield agricultural show will have a focus this year on the town’s place as a significant site of megafauna fossils. The show is at Lancefield Park from 9am-4pm this Sunday and includes the opening of the town’s first megafauna festival. Bones excavated from the park site will be on display. ‘‘Lancefield Park is one of Australia’s significant sites for finding the bones of giant kangaroos and wombats, which lived from 26,000-80,000 years ago,’’ a show spokeswoman said. ‘‘Museum Victoria will have some of the excavated bones on display,” she said. “Landcare and the council’s environmental team will also have megafauna and extinction information.’’ Would-be archaeologists will be able to unearth bones in a sandpit ‘jigsaw dig’ and there will be sideshows, art and craft displays, terrier races, a tractor pull, wood chop, cattle, sheep and rides. Cyclist dies at Sunbury
A cyclist in his 50s died after a collision at Sunbury last Thursday. The Calder Freeway was closed in both directions at Vineyard Road after the crash just before 10.30am. Police believe a car and the cyclist were both travelling west when the collision happened. The driver, a Sunbury man, 63, was helping police with their investigation.

SPORT Tigers relish challenge of another promotion The Gisborne and District Cricket Association season brings a lot of unknowns for Lancefield Cricket Club. After winning last season’s C-grade flag, the Tigers will play this summer in B-grade, a level that’s foreign to most of its players. Tigers player-coach Luke Barker said only two or three of the side had played at a higher grade than C. “It’s exciting for the club and everyone involved,” Barker said before the opening match against St Anthonys. “We’re hoping to be competitive. It’s a big step up but a challenge we’re looking forward to.”
The Tigers are used to challenges; the club has risen three grades in as many years. Lancefield was playing E-grade in 2012-13. The Tigers’ other two sides have also gone up in the off-season. “In an ideal world we would like to make finals, but we’re realistic about the big step we’re taking,” Barker said. “The game situation will be different and the players won’t be able to play with the same free spirit. “The batting and bowling will be better and all of a sudden teams will be making 250 against us. But I’m confident we have the skills to play in B-grade and even [top grade] McIntyre Cup.”
Barker said the club had retained all last year’s premiership side, although Simon Donnellon would step down to play in the second XI. Riddell’s Ryan Millar has joined the Tigers to bat in the middle order, while Barker says the club is hoping to announce a big-name signing in the next couple of days. He says he’s excited to see how Matthew Bowden will play this season after he led the C-grade wicket tally last season with 41. “He probably won’t have the season he had last year, but I’m sure he’ll prove himself,” Barker said. “He’s never played higher than C-grade as he’s come through the ranks at Lancefield.”
Dragons come out firing By Tara Murray New Gisborne coach Simon Harman was fairly happy with what he saw first-up from his side in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s McIntyre Cup. Harman was appointed to the role in May but only returned to Australia last week from playing in England. “I missed the preseason as I didn’t know until halfway through the season in England that I’d be coaching,” Harman said. “It’s an exciting time for the club, which is why I wanted to coach. “There are 90-odd registrations and there’s competition for spots in the top sides. “I think the club is going so well and being run really well. It would have been more difficult to put my hand up with a poor side.” Harman was happy to get a first-up win against Romsey. Batting first, the Dragons battled to 7-141 off their 40 overs before its bowlers did the job, skittling Romsey for just 63. “It didn’t matter how we won the first round,” Harman said. “We knew, if we bowled well, we could defend our total. “We didn’t bat to our full potential or get the balance and tempo of the innings right. But we fielded and bowled well.” It was some of the fresh faces that stood out for the Dragons. New recruits Beau Valka, Thair Afradi and Jay King all played their roles. Valka, who has returned to the club from Premier Cricket, top-scored for the Dragons, with 67. Afradi took three wickets and King took two. “There’s a lot more competition for spots this year,” Harman said. “Afradi, I believe he has played at a fairly high level in the UK. He wanted to come out and play and, through a contact in the UK, we got him out here.” For Romsey, Paul Wilkinson was best of the bowlers with 4-27. Jamie Taylor top-scored with 15. The Dragons this week face reigning premiers Sunbury United, who suffered a first-up loss to Woodend. Woodend made 6-188 off its overs on the back of its top order all making runs. Jack Mackintosh top-scored with 53, while skipper Adam Johnstone added 48. In reply, United couldn’t go on with it after making a good start. Jets sign up new coach Sunbury Jets have turned to the experienced Andrew Summerville to take over the reins of the Sunbury Jets’ Big V division 1 men’s team. The association announced on Friday that Summerville will replace Grant Spencer as coach for the next two years. Summerville’s experience includes being assistant coach at the Brisbane Bullets, coaching in SEABL, working with NBA’s Toronto Raptors and coaching college basketball in the United States. He previously spoke to the Jets about coaching five years ago, but the timing wasn’t right. “I decided to throw my hat in the ring,” Summerville said after his appointment. “I’ve been involved in basketball professionally for 20 years and coaching is something I’ve always done.” Summerville has inside knowledge of the Jets’ program, having been the association’s first ever operations manager over the past 12 months. He will continue in that role. “I’ve obviously observed all the Big V programs and I’m excited to see where it will go. “There’s been good steps forward with a new governance program and strategic vision. It’s an exciting time to be a coach.” While the men’s side hasn’t played finals since 2009, the youth program has been thriving after its teams made finals the past two years. “We want our senior team to be a pathway and destination for players to play,” Summerville said. He said the club would probably add a couple of players to the squad to add some experience, but it was too early to say what type of players it will be looking for. “If we can’t find who we want in Sunbury, we will find players willing to come and play,” he said. “We want to get the best possible talent but also people who will give back to the club. “It’s about fostering the right personalities, not just the skills.” The Jets are yet to appoint a women’s coach but expect to do so in coming weeks. Andrew Seidel will again coach the youth league women’s division, after taking the club to the youth league division 2 grand final in his first year. Brian Ogilvie has been appointed Youth League 1 men’s coach. Ogilvie, who previously played at Sunbury, has been involved at Hume City Broncos as a coach and a committee member.

Sunbury fires first shot By Tara Murray Sunbury got its first win of the Bowls Victoria Pennant season by finishing stronger than Fitzroy Victoria (2) on Saturday. Having lost first up to Craigieburn last week in division 2, section 2, Sunbury was keen to open its account with a win at home. Only a couple of shots separated the sides with seven ends to go, but Sunbury got late shots to win 16(85)-2(76). Dean Deon won his rink 28-17, Carla Odgers’ rink won 23-21 and Mark Cowan’s rink won 22-20. Elise Cowan suffered a rare loss with her rink losing 20-12. Sunbury’s Dave Glennon said the decision to promote Deon to skip had paid off. “He’s only been back this year after being in Europe the past couple of years,” Glennon said of Deon. “He had previously skippered for us when we were in premier division. “Last week, he was the third player in his rink and Eric Taylor was skip. “They swapped that around and with the result they had it’s likely we’ll stick with that for the next few weeks.” Glennon said that even at this early stage of the season, every point was important. Sunbury is on 20 points after two rounds, 12 behind West Coburg. “It’s looking like it will go down to the wire already as it’s a very competitive season,” he said. “This week we play Glenroy, who won their match against Buckley Park despite winning only one rink.” It was a good weekend for Sunbury, with four of the club’s five sides getting wins.

Gisborne is on the hunt for a new coach after Rod Sharp decided to step down from the head role last week. A Bulldogs statement said Sharp had stepped down from the position, effective immediately. Sunbury Softball kicked off its new season on Saturday with a draw between Goonawarriors and Cubs in under-13s. The teams scored 13 home runs apiece. Dark Knights defeated Panthers 9-0 in the other under-13 game. In women’s competition, Knights defeated Storm 16-6, and Jackson Panthers defeated Wildcats 13-0. In the men’s competition, Goonawarriors defeated Jackson Panthers 7-0, while Storm were too good for the Knights, winning 11-5.

Kath Jekabsons is winner of the Romsey Golf Club’s Rose Scanlon Shield as best female golfer at the club. Jekabsons was named the winner last week on 34 points, nine clear of Pam Drummond. Bowlers know life won’t be quite as good again Kyneton Golf Bowls Club knows it will never have a season like last year but is still hoping for more success this time around. For a side that has played in 13 of the past 15 Central Highlands bowls division (CHBD) 1 grand finals, last season was amazing even by its own standards. They won everything on offer, including the division 1 and 2 championships and the triples, while club member Anthony Mathison won the CHBD champion of champions title. Club president John McQualter said the club knew it couldn’t have a season like that
again. Both its teams will play in division 1 this year after Trentham dropped a division due to a shortage of players. “Last year was the pinnacle,” McQualter said before the weekend’s opening round. “We’ve never won divisions 1 and 2 in the same season before. “We had a vote after the season and weren’t keen on [our second side] going into division 1 as we’re only a small club with about 45 players. “But we had to go up when Trentham lost players and went down a division.” McQualter says he expects the top team,
Kyneton Golf Gold, will be in the mix again. “The Gold side is a strong team, but the Blues may struggle as we’re a bit short of numbers at the moment. “And a few other sides have improved so it will be hard.” Kyneton Golf lost eight players in the off-season, most from the Blue side. “Daniel Lonsdale has gone to try his luck to Mitcham, in the premier division,” McQualter said. “Richard Dwyer, a son of one of our players, who has been with premier side Essendon, has returned and will replace Daniel as a skipper.
“Wayne Turner has also returned to the club, while Jarrod Plowman, another son of one of our players, is a handy addition.” The Gold side started the season well, with a 16 (102) - 2 (74) win over Woodend on Saturday. The Blue side struggled, losing to Gisborne 18 (138) - 0 (83). In other results, Kyneton beat Romsey 16 (109) - 2(76), while Lancefield defeated Bacchus Marsh 16(86) - 2(80) in the closest of the matches. Bacchus Marsh, Gisborne, Diggers Rest and Mt Cottrell were winners in division 2. Tara Murray
Brumbies happy with relegation By Tara Murray Dropping down a division isn’t always the worst thing that can happen in cricket. At least that’s the view of Clarkefield Brumbies Cricket Club. After struggling for some years in the North West Metropolitan Cricket Association’s George Luscombe Shield, the Brumbies were relegated last season after finishing bottom of the ladder with three wins. In 2015-16, they will play in the association’s second division Vic Kyte Shield competition. Brumbies batsman David Falzon says dropping down a division will allow the team to gain confidence and get some wins on the board. “Many of the other clubs have five or six sides and get 100 players at training. We have just one team,” Falzon said. “Maybe you need to go down and have a year of getting confidence and winning a few games. “The last time we were in this division we won the championship.” Falzon said the Brumbies had managed to keep most of last season’s team together. “We lost one player, our captain Matthew Shaughnessy, who has gone to Riddell as he wanted to play at a higher level,” he said. “We have pretty much kept everyone else and we’ve added a couple of extra players. “We’ve been training really hard the last eight weeks.” Falzon said Vincent Muscat and new captain Thomas Balmer were players to watch this season. “Tom is a top-order batsman who’s been looking really good in the nets,” he said. “Vincent is a right-arm fast bowler who’s picked up a couple of yards of pace.” In a much-needed boost for the Brumbies, their Clarkefield Reserve ground was upgraded in the off-season. “We’ve had a bit of trouble with the ground

in recent years,” Falzon said. “The council has improved the playing surface and it’s a lot better. It used to have rabbit holes and wasn’t good to play on.” In another boost, Clarkefield’s most
famous business, the Coach and Horses Inn, has come on board as a sponsor for the first time in the club’s history. Despite a new-found optimism at the club, the Brumbies lost their opening match of the

A group of Riddell umpires will play an important role in the United States’ AFL national championships in Texas this weekend. The 16-strong group from the Riddell umpires’ association caught a flight to America last Thursday to help officiate in the two-day USAFL national titles. Umpires’ coach Michael O’Keefe said it was a great opportunity for the group. “There’s not a lot of chances for umpires to do this,” he said. “One or two umpires may be sent to Ireland occasionally but never a group this big going overseas to help umpire a tournament.” O’Keefe said the chance came about after last year’s AFL International Cup when the Riddell District Football Netball League hosted the Indonesia versus France game at Diggers Rest. “The head of umpiring from America was out with their team,” O’Keefe said. “They only have about 100 umpires in the country – we
season against Royal Park Reds on Saturday. The Brumbies were bowled out for 150 in the 38th over, the Reds chasing down the total with six wickets and 10 overs to spare.
