Community action groups from Broadmeadows, Sunbury, Craigieburn and Tullamarine have been approached to sign a letter to the Premier, urging the government to accept the auditors’ recommendations.

Ms Hutchins has said she would carefully consider the auditors’ recommendations before making a final decision in ‘‘coming weeks’’.

Supporters of an independent Sunbury, who claim the town was torpedoed by a report that recommended against it splitting from Hume council, are testing the waters for a new political party.

Star Weekly understands discussions are ongoing between a number of prominent residents about forming a ‘Sunbury for Sunbury’ party to contest the next state election.

The Sunbury Residents Association also recently vowed to continue fighting for a Sunbury council, regardless of what Local Government Minister Natalie Hutchins eventually decides.

Others, including Sunbury-based councillor Ann Potter, Broadmeadows Progress Association and the Sunbury Community Progress Association, have called for people to ‘‘move on’’.

Pro-split proponents believe the proposed party would easily secure the 500 members it needs to register.

Sunbury resident Trevor Dance, who stood for the Palmer United Party in the Senate last November, said a new party would have merit. ‘‘I think it’s getting to the stage where people are peeved with both sides of politics,’’ he said. ‘‘If there were to be an alternative for Sunbury to get what it’s been looking for for 20 years, you look at all options.’’

The auditors’ report – presented to Ms Hutchins on August 28 and released last month – said there were too many concerns a Sunbury council would be unviable.

The auditors said they believed previous financial advice prepared by three consultants supported their view that a Sunbury council was unlikely to be sustainable without significant

financial assistance, higher rates or reduced services.

Critics have complained auditors Frank Vincent and John Watson were not given scope to assess the validity of figures relied upon in the previous reports, including unaudited data provided by Hume council to KPMG. ‘A spokeswoman for Ms Hutchins said attempts to discredit the approach taken by the auditors were ‘‘not in the best interests of the community’’.

Trailer theft rocks Lions

By Sumeyya Ilanbey Diggers Rest Lions Club members are reeling after thieves stole a trailer due to be raffled for charity.

On Friday, September 18, club secretary Bob Cassar parked the new trailer, packed full of items, at club headquarters.

The following Friday, the trailer and goods, valued at $1500, were gone.

Mr Cassar said it was the first time in eight years the club had been broken into.

“Our big concern is that now they’ve been able to break into the shed, there’s nothing to stop them again,” Mr Cassar said.

“We’re worried that they will strike again.”

He said the thieves “went to a lot of trouble” to steal the trailer.

The chain and lock had been reconnected to look as though nothing had been broken.

“Any time you passed the area, you wouldn’t have noticed it had been broken into,” he said.

Every year, the club sells raffle tickets to raise money for a community organisation.

This year, the money raised was to be donated to CareWorks, Sunbury, to support their Christmas hamper drive.

CareWorks provides emergency relief to people in crisis.

“The club is devastated and extremely disappointed that the trailer was stolen,” Mr

“I wish the offenders had a conscience about what they were doing. In my opinion, a theft like this … isn’t a school boy theft. This was planned,” he said.

“I’d say it was somebody who noticed us putting the trailer into the shed on the Friday.”

Mr Cassar said not only had the club lost the value of the trailer and the items in it, they had lost about $4000 in fundraising money.

The trailer is dark grey, with white- rimmed wheels and a silver cage.

New Crime Statistics Agency data reveals breaches of court orders, theft, drug use and possession continue to be major drivers of crime in Sunbury and the Macedon Ranges.

Figures for the year to July 30, released last week, show overall crime in Hume was up 14.2 per cent, with almost 19,000 incidents recorded.

Total offences in the Macedon Ranges increased 13.6 per cent to 2259.

Hume police’s Acting Inspector Anthony Brown said while there was a significant increase in the number of court orders not being obeyed – from 1628 to 2332 – the data showed police were actively pursing breaches. ‘‘That reflects our commitment to ensuring the orders are upheld,’’ he said. ‘‘There has been a focus change and a concerted effort in relation to family violence, which is obviously something that’s a high priority for us.’’

Hume recorded a 3.7 per cent increase in family incidents, from 2906 to 3014. Homicides were up 75 per cent, from eight to 14, robberies increased 30 per cent, from 79 to 103, and thefts were up 13 per cent, from 5441 to 6139.

Drug use and possession increased 116 per cent to 919, due to the rollout of roadside saliva kits earlier this year, and weapons offences rose 42 per cent to 842.

Acting Inspector Brown said operations were bearing fruit. ‘‘What it shows was police are out there making a concerted effort and not ignoring the issues.

“Some of our crime is definitely drug-related, so we’re doing our best to investigate it.’’

Macedon Ranges police’s Acting Inspector Paul Cliffe was pleased with a 6.9 per cent reduction in family violence, continuing a recent trend.

But he was disappointed by a 25 per cent increase in breaches of court orders. ‘‘A lot of those relate to family violence. The orders are getting put in place, but people are not obeying them,’’ he said.

Arson was down 54 per cent to 28 offences, drug use and possession went up 132 per cent to 170, and weapons offences 120 per cent to 110 in the Macedon Ranges.

When Kyneton businessman Peter Connor died of cancer in 2009, Joel Bertoncini wasn’t in any shape to do more than a few laps of the showgrounds, let alone run all the way from Sydney.

But Mr Bertoncini says the death of his best friend’s father jolted him into taking control of his own health.

Now 40 kilograms lighter and with more than 4000 kilometres of training under his belt, Mr Bertoncini is preparing to run from the Sydney Opera House to his hometown, raising money and awareness for the Cancer Council.

He hopes ‘Doing it for Big Pete’ can rake in $200,000 for research, and inspire others to live healthier lives. ‘‘When he died, it was a bit of a wake-up call,’’ Mr Bertoncini, 30, says.

He will set off after a launch party at Newmarket Hotel from 7pm this Friday, having spent much of the past nine months training under fitness coach Gordon Muir. He says the 900-kilometre trek honours a man who gave so much. ‘‘Pete was just such a caring, kind person with a big heart. A lot of people knew who he was in Kyneton … if it wasn’t for him Piper Street wouldn’t be what it is today, because he was always trying to get it pumping.’’

Son Peter Jr will be by Mr Bertoncini’s side as his lead driver. He says his father would be proud of Mr Bertoncini’s efforts. ‘‘He’s doing a good thing,’’ Peter Jr says.

Friday’s launch will include an auction of signed AFL memorabilia, including a jumper signed by Brownlow medallist Nat Fyfe and donated by Fremantle coach Ross Lyon. AFL great David Parkin will make a presentation.

Mr Bertoncini leaves Sydney on October 13, passing through towns including Mittagong, Gundagai, Holbrook and Broadford before arriving at Kyneton on October 27, the anniversary of Mr Connor’s death.

Celtic knotwork, a Roman coin, a knight’s helmet, three Renaissance paintings, a suffragette and a space shuttle spell out the name of the world’s most famous search engine in a drawing selected from more than 26,000 entries.

A public vote, which closed last Friday, will decide the final four designs to be presented to senior Google Australia executives.

Edith says the sketch took about four hours to complete. ‘‘I was in art class and the teacher asked if anyone wanted to enter,’’ she says. ‘‘The theme was ‘If I could travel back in time, I would ‌’, so I thought about all the changes of the past 2000 years.’’ Salesian College will receive a $10,000 equipment grant if Edith’s entry is successful.

Three-year-olds head out of town

Children enrolled in a three-year-olds’ program at Lancefield kindergarten for the next year have been offered places at Romsey or Riddells Creek.

Macedon Ranges council has received just nine enrolments for its 2016 program, 11 fewer than this year and well short of the 20 needed for the Lancefield program to proceed.

The setback comes after a major social services report highlighted poor rates of school readiness in the town.

As reported by Star Weekly Weekly, the Dropping Off the Edge report showed Lancefield was 38th out of 667 localities in the state for school readiness, and 135th for year 3 numeracy. High rankings indicated disadvantage.

A letter from the kindergarten’s committee said the program would not go ahead without a late rush of enrolments. ‘‘The committee, however, is not giving up our belief that we can turn things around for our community,’’ the letter stated, and it urged parents of three-year-olds to contact the council. ‘‘From our own experience, the amazing team … ensures that our young children become comfortable in the kindergarten environment, and encourages a variety of indoor and outdoor activities to boost social, emotional and intellectual development of our children.’’

Council community wellbeing director Karen Stevens said kindergarten enrolments across the shire had increased for next year – with the exception of Lancefield’s three-year-old group. ‘‘Most sessions are full, and extra classes have been added to timetables where there is capacity to increase,’’ she said.

Major refurbishments to Kyneton’s Bluestone Theatre represent an exciting new era for arts in the town, Friends group president Alan Stone says.

The theatre, a former Congregational church built in 1859, was closed for three years amid safety concerns before a $400,000 project funded by the state government, Macedon Ranges council and the Friends of the Bluestone Theatre brought it back to life.

Works including structural upgrades, ceiling and roofing repairs, new carpet, electrical rewiring and paintwork were officially unveiled last Wednesday.

Mr Stone said the changes had greatly improved the venue. ‘‘The whole place has got such a nice feel,’’ he said. ‘‘Yes, it’s not a purpose-built building, but the acoustics can work really well. ‘‘And, with the stage back at its original level, you step out there and feel like you’re actually in a theatre.’’

Mr Stone said feedback to the renovations had been overwhelmingly positive.

Kyneton Theatre Company’s production of Pirates of Penzance will be staged at the theatre from October 9-24.

To assist residents to do this, burning off restrictions will be lifted during October for residents living on land less than 4,000 square metres (one acre).

Eliminate food, shelter and water sources, but don’t freak out – that’s the message to Sunbury and Macedon Ranges residents as snake season starts.

Sightings have been reported from Diggers Rest to Kyneton and across to Sidonia, with warm spring weather drawing the poisonous reptiles out from their hiding places.

Residential areas near Sunbury’s Jacksons Creek are also a hot-spot.

Licensed snake catcher and animal rescuer Manfred Zabinskas said he was already busy. ‘‘The season has definitely started,’’ he said. ‘‘People are much more likely to see snakes when the weather first starts to warm up. ‘‘They are also more likely to come across them in the early hours. ‘‘In the middle of the day, they move so fast that you’re unlikely to even know they’ve been there.’’

Mr Zabinskas said increased activities, such as slashing, mowing, earthworks and housing construction could also result in snakes moving around at this time of year. ‘‘All those things can cause them to move into an area they’re not normally seen in,’’ he said. ‘‘They don’t like vibrations, so if there is a lot going on, any snakes in the area will certainly be displaced.’’

Councils within an hour of Melbourne’s suburban fringe are calling for help to deal with rapid population growth, with towns such as Gisborne expected to house up to 6000 more residents by 2036.

The Peri Urban Group of Councils, which includes the Macedon Ranges, says its 10 members need greater policy and funding support so they can provide the services and infrastructure needed while preserving the agricultural, tourism and environmental elements for which the areas are known.

Macedon Ranges deputy mayor Russell Mowatt supported the group’s calls for the state government to give greater recognition in its revised Plan Melbourne to managing urban sprawl. ‘‘They want another two million people in Melbourne by 2030 … it will have an impact on the peri-urban areas,’’ Cr Mowatt said. ‘‘It’s good to review these plans from time to time, but they need to talk to those councils that are going to be impacted.’’

Opposition planning spokesman David Davis said peri-urban areas provided essential opportunities for recreation and tourism. ‘‘If Daniel Andrews stubbornly refuses to recognise the value of our peri-urban areas in his rewrite of Plan Melbourne, then he’ll do so at his peril,’’ he said.

A government spokesman said at least $70 million of a $500 million Regional Jobs and Infrastructure Fund would be spent in rural areas.

Almost a year after his sudden death, organisers of a charity dinner dance this Saturday hope to raise $10,000 to help Mr Long’s widow Meredith bring up their young sons.

Spokesman Chris Finch says friends used to joke that ‘‘community’’ was Mr Long’s middle name. ‘‘I’ve never, ever known anybody as community-minded as Dennis,’’ Mr Finch says. ‘‘He helped people with respite, he was a first-aider, a blood donor, so many things.’’

Mr and Mrs Long, who lost a son in the early 1980s, began fostering children in their mid-60s.

After taking in Nathan, 9, and Danny, 7, a few years ago, they made the decision to become their legal guardians.

Mr Finch says this weekend’s event, including a two-course meal, music from soul-jazz band Shaun Evans and the Soulistics, and a talk by author John Marsden, will help Mrs Long raise the boys and provide for their future.

The Mount Players will honour Mr Long by planting a memorial tree, while the CFA will present a certificate acknowledging his 38 years of service.

A charity auction will include signed books, a framed watercolour painting by Helen Cottle, handmade furniture, wine, Seekers memorabilia and photography sessions.

Mr Finch is urging anyone who knew Mr Long to show support.

SPORT Barker leaps at chance to guide Diggers Rest Bulla The invitation to coach Diggers Rest Bulla Village Cricket Club was too good to refuse for Kevin Barker.

Having begun his cricket career in the Gisborne and District association with Rupertswood, Barker left the competition to play at a higher standard.

He spent two seasons at Premier Cricket club Footscray Edgewater before playing the past three at Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association club, Brunswick.

Barker, who lives in Sunbury, said his ties with many of the committee members of Diggers Rest Bulla Village, including president

Sean Fitzpatrick. played a major part in his accepting the role.

“I have played with and against a lot of the guys at Diggers Rest Bulla,” Barker said.

“I played half a season of footy with Diggers Rest and the job came up in conversation.

“I had a few personal things come up and I actually wasn’t going to play this year, but when the offer just came up I couldn’t say no.”

This is the Burras’ first year back in the McIntyre Cup after winning the B-grade competition last season.

“I see it as a really good opportunity and I can see us being competitive in McIntyre Cup.

“The club has a bright future and I wouldn’t have taken on the role if I didn’t think we could be competitive,’’ Barker said.

“Finals is the goal. From there it’s two matches and anything can happen.”

He said the line-up would be similar to last season. “I’m going to try and do what I can over the next few weeks to strengthen the side and will use some of my contacts to do that.”

Barker said former coach Rhys Berry was still playing an important role at the club.

In Berry’s three years as coach, the Burras played three grand finals and won two flags before he stepped down due to other commitments.

“What I’ve seen already is his leadership off field. I’m excited to work with him and the other leaders of the club,” Barker said.

For Barker, who is an opening batsman, the focus isn’t just on the McIntyre Cup side.

“We want to get all our other sides going up the grades. There’s a bit of a gap between them. “We want to get them up into B and C grades and expand from three sides to more.”

The Burras kick off their McIntyre Cup season on Saturday against Riddell in a one-dayer.

Fight brews over Blues

By Tara Murray The Riddell District Football Netball League board will ask its clubs to oppose Kilmore’s application to leave the competition and join the Northern Football League.

As previously reported by Star Weekly Weekly, Kilmore approached the Northern Football League about a possible move across from the RDFNL. The RDFNL board met last Wednesday night to discuss the Blues’ application.

Rod Ward, general manager of AFL Goldfields, which oversees the RDFNL, said the league was of the view the move to the NFL may “place the club in a more precarious position than what it’s currently in”.

Speaking to the Star Weekly before the meeting, Ward said the league had been ‘‘blindsided’’ by the decision.

“Last Friday we made a presentation at Kilmore,” he said. “We were reasonably

comfortable the vote was in favour – or at least 50/50 in favour of staying in the RDFNL. “We didn’t think they would have overwhelming support like they did.

“One of the biggest things we think is the club will become fractured, with the netball and possibly under-18 football being played at different venues to the senior football.”

Ward said the league had sent out emails to all Kilmore football and netball players to survey their views on the proposed move.

Results so far were inconclusive.

“The RDFNL has given them very sufficient support and that support could see additional concessions in future,” Ward said.

“Every club has the right to decide its best fit for the future, but we think their future could still lie in the RDFNL.” Club presidents will meet on Wednesday night to vote on the application with the verdict to be passed onto AFL Victoria, which will make the final decision.

The RDFNL’s board decision comes after Kilmore members and NFL clubs voted to support the move Blues president Dave Milne said members voted 61-8 in favour of the move.

“We are looking at having a change and something different,” he said. “We want a brighter future for the club moving forward.”

He said the club’s netball side would also continue.

The NFL runs a netball competition on Friday nights which doesn’t run side by side with the football as in the RDFNL. NFL’s Samuel Zito said all clubs voted in favour of the move and there was only one hurdle remaining: AFL Victoria needing to tick the move off.

The NFL board had recommended its clubs vote in favour of accepting Kilmore. If successful, the Blues would play in division 3, giving the division eight teams and removing the need for a bye.

At just 14, Madison Prespakis is taking women’s football by storm in her first season.

Having played previously with the boys at Romsey Junior Football Club, Prespakis was forced to make the move to women-only footy due to her age.

Her first move was to join the Sunbury Lions youth girls’ side, which plays in the Essendon District Football League.

“I’ve played boys footy all my life,” Prespakis said. “So girls’ footy is new to me,” the youngster said.

“I then found out there was a girls’ Calder Cannons development program, so I went down there, tried out for that and got selected.”

Despite being new to women’s footy, Prespakis continued to excel and was soon part of not one, but three Victorian squads.

She was selected in the under-16 School Sports Victoria team, the under-18 Vic Metro team for the national championships and the Victorian team for the indigenous Kickstart youth girls national championships.

In the first two competitions, she was part of the championship winning team, and her performances in the under-18 titles saw her picked in the carnival’s All-Australia side.

“Sometimes it can be overwhelming being the youngest,” she said. “I was the youngest in my team and the youngest in division 1, but when you start playing, it doesn’t feel like you’re the youngest.”

Her performances at the Kickstart youth girls championships were rewarded when she was named in the 40-girl Woomeras squad and considered her side’s most valuable player.

She was also part of Gisborne Secondary College’s school side that finished second at the School Sports Victoria junior female football competition.

Last Saturday, Prespakis capped off the season, finishing second in the EDFL’s ‘youth girls’ best and fairest award on 16 votes, eight behind Pascoe Vale’s Sarah Dargan.

“I only played seven games,” Prespakis said. “I missed the first five or so due to Victoria commitments and after that I started my local club season.”

Prespakis is hoping her football will lead her into the new women’s league, with the AFL committing last month to a launch by 2017.

“My dream since I was little was to play AFL… now I’ve seen there is going to be a women’s AFL league so I want to work hard to achieve that.”

New coach picked Sharks … and they picked him Rupertswood has appointed former Riddell District Premier League premiership coach Kevin Fitzgerald as its new senior coach.

The Sharks announced on Wednesday night they had come to an agreement with Fitzgerald, who replaces Ben Jordan, coach for the past two years.

Sharks president Paul Ross said everything had fallen into place with Fitzgerald.

“We are really fortunate that we picked him and he picked us. He had been approached by other clubs wanting him to coach them.

“We wanted someone from outside the club to give a new perspective on things,’’ Ross said.

“He’s very impressive with his resume and he encourages a good culture. He ticked all the boxes and everything slotted into place.”

Fitzgerald most recently coached Gisborne in the Bendigo Football League in 2013 and took the club to a finals appearance.

He was assistant coach at the Bulldogs the two years before that.

It will be his third stint in the RDFL, having previously coached Romsey and Lancefield.

He coached the Redbacks in 2005-06 when they finished runners-up and third.

He coached the Tigers to the 2009 premiership before a third-placed finish in 2010.

He has spent the past two years concentrating on his business interests.

Ross said Fitzgerald had signed a one-year contract with the option of a second year.

“His coaching record speaks for itself with the way he coaches and his techniques,” Ross said. “His involvement with Box Hill and

“I loved coming back to Sunbury,” she says.

“There’s a good group of people; I really enjoy playing there.

“Hopefully, we can go one step further and get into division 1.

“With that little bit more experience in finals,

hopefully, we will be a little bit smarter,” she says.

“I’m not coaching this year; I’ve decided to focus on my other bowls commitments. But if people need help, I’ll be willing to help them.”

Riddell has moved quickly to fill its vacant coaching role, appointing Jamie Elliott for next year’s Riddell District Football League season.

The former Diggers Rest coach replaces premiership coach Troy Scoble, who stood down from the Bombers after their semi-final loss .

Bombers’ president Jason Allen said the club was thrilled to have Elliott on board.

Elliott coached the Burras for two years, including the 2013 grand final.

Before that, he coached Bendigo Football League sides Castlemaine and Maryborough. He also played 58 AFL games for Richmond, Fitzroy and St Kilda.

“He’s a great football person and has been with the Sunbury Lions the past two years as an assistant coach,” Allen said. “They have been working at bringing on younger players through the season and we’re doing the same thing now.

“We want to build a team around those younger players.”

Allen said the club wouldn’t be bringing in many newcomers in the off season.

“We’re sticking with who we already have. There maybe a couple of retirements,” Allen said.

“We’ll look to boost the side with a couple of players to fill holes, but we’re not expecting Jamie to bring an influx of players with him.”

The club has also appointed a new reserves coach. Two-time Bombers’ premiership player Cameron Casson will take on the role, while Glen Elliott remains coach of the under-18.5s.

New coach as Bombers regroup

By Tara Murray Sunbury’s Carla Odgers is primed for a big Bowls Victoria pennant season after a massive offseason that included her first individual Australian singles title.

Odgers, who returned to play with Sunbury last season after a couple of years away, was forced to fight hard in the Australian indoor final in August as the title went down to the wire.

“All my games in the first few rounds had gone to tie-breakers,” Odgers said last week.

“The final could have gone either way.”

In the final, Odgers defeated Lynsey Clarke, who was eight months’ pregnant at the time, in yet another tie-breaker.

The win means she’ll represent Australia at the World Cup in April.

“It’s the first Australian singles title I’ve won,” Odgers said.

“I’ve been playing at this tournament since I was 17-18 and to have finally won, it’s great.

“It’s one step further than last year when I got knocked out in the semi-finals.”

In the offseason, Odgers was also part of the winning women’s four team at the Australian Open.

“I always enjoy playing singles, but it’s also good to win titles with your friends.

“The Australian Open was great to win and I could celebrate with other people.”

It caps off a busy two years for Odgers, who represented Australia in last year’s Commonwealth Games.

And her playing schedule doesn’t seem to be getting any lighter.

“I’m going over to New Zealand with the Jackaroos, where they will pick a team for the Asian Pacific championships being played in December,” she said.

“They pick five women from that, who will then participate in the championships.”

Odgers says she’s looking forward to the coming season with Sunbury, which is in division 2, section 2 this season.

This year she will concentrate on playing, having given up a coaching role.

Hawthorn is a big plus. He has kept up to date with coaching techniques the last couple of years.”

Ross said the Sharks hoped to pick up a couple of new players.

“We hope Kevin’s contacts with that will help, but we haven’t gone far down that path yet as he has only just signed.

“We’d love to pick up a couple of players; it will depend on the budget.”
