Parking crisis hurts town By Matt Crossman The long-term carpark at Sunbury train station is full to capacity well before the shops open. The early arrivals leave retail workers and shoppers to battle it out for limited short-term spaces, which curtails retail activities and forces workers to regularly shift their vehicles. Now Hume council has taken up retailers’ calls for the state government to urgently increase parking at the station and give business a break. The council says overwhelming demand is also stopping some people from accessing train services. Parking problems have worsened in recent years, with the addition of Metro trains in 2012 leading to a large increase in passenger numbers.
While extra parking was added at the time of electrification, Sunbury Business Association (SBA) vice-president Marnie Harding said supply was not keeping up with demand. The station has 550 parking spaces, and the council provides 100 more spaces for commuters – despite this being a government responsibility. ‘‘Business owners and commuters are fighting daily for these parks,’’ Ms Harding said. ‘‘It’s either get it for the train or get it for your business, because once these are full there’s nowhere else.’’ The problem isn’t restricted to weekdays, with the town often gridlocked by parking and traffic problems at weekends. Ms Harding said extra spaces at the station would give businesses long-term parking

options. She said the SBA received frequent complaints about the flow-on effect of the parking shortfall on business. ‘‘We’re frustrated,’’ Ms Harding said. ‘‘Because we’re going to experience such massive growth, they need to look at the whole parking issue. ‘‘People are willing to walk – they just don’t want to have to move their cars every two hours.’’ Mayor Adem Atmaca said the recent addition of two extra Metro services, with the promise of more to come, would put more pressure on already stretched parking areas. ‘‘Latest figures show that 2.7 million passengers travel on the train between Sunbury and Keilor Plains stations each year, and patronage has grown by 25 per cent in the
past two years alone,’’ Cr Atmaca said. ‘‘The population of Sunbury will almost double by 2036, and it’s vital to progressively increase space for car parking to support generations of young families.’’ Cr Atmaca said Sunbury’s parking was a regional issue. ‘‘You have people who don’t live in Sunbury but drive here to get more frequent services. ‘‘That will only increase because you’ve got such growth in the surrounding suburbs and towns.’’ A spokesman for Transport Minister Jacinta Allan said the government had a $20 million plan to boost commuter parking. ‘‘Any opportunities to expand parking at Sunbury will be identified as part of that process,’’ the spokesman said.

New push for autism services By Matt Crossman A Macedon Ranges support group has floated the idea of putting a specialist facility in the new Kyneton education precinct amid reports that the needs of students with autism are not being met. In some cases, local schools have told parents they could only guarantee a pupil’s safety for three hours a day. Other parents have spoken of frustration about schools having widely ranging levels of staff awareness of autism, which affects about 1 in 60 children.
Autism is a condition characterised by difficulty in communicating, forming relationships, using language and understanding abstract concepts. While often quite intelligent, some children with autism are known to wander. Urging parents to make a submission to a state government review into the education of children with special needs, Macedon Ranges Central Victorian Autism Network spokeswoman Fiona Le Nepveu said the life of some parents was made harder through autism-specific schooling in Jacana or Laverton being available only to people living south of
She said that while there was a major focus on early intervention, support for families often vanished once a child reached school age. ‘‘We’re also seeing a lot of kids in upper primary, the social skills are getting more intense and there’s a lot of bullying and some schools just don’t know how to manage that behaviour.’’ Ms Thomas said she would continue to advocate for children with autism. Children are typically not eligible for broader specialist schools, such as those in Sunbury and Bendigo, unless they also have an intellectual disability. ‘‘It puts many people in such a difficult position,’’ said Ms Le Nepveu, who met Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas following recent education forums held across the electorate. ‘‘We had a talk about whether there were opportunities – with the education hub to be built in Kyneton, with satellite schools or some kind of additional services,’’ Ms Le Nepveu said.

Sunbury and Macedon Ranges school classrooms, gyms, canteens and art areas will be upgraded, with the region’s state schools to share more than $1.81 million of extra maintenance funding. The money, in addition to regular maintenance funding and infrastructure projects announced in May’s state budget, is for buildings identified during an independent audit of every state school. Schools to receive a boost include Sunbury College ($586,000), Sunbury Downs College ($260,000), Sunbury Heights Primary School ($184,000) and Sunbury West Primary School ($89,000). Also funded were works at Gisborne Secondary College ($78,000), Kyneton Secondary College ($236,000), New Gisborne Primary School ($272,000) and Romsey Primary School ($112,000). Romsey principal Loren Peavey said up to 10 classrooms would get fresh paint, new carpet and windows. ‘‘This is a great boost because the general maintenance budget can only go so far,’’ she said. Ms Peavey said the school, which moved to its present site in 1994, continued to receive strong support from the community. ‘‘We have a really good parent body which provides great help with the gardens and grounds,’’ Ms Peavey said. Sunbury Labor MP Josh Bull said the extra money was a well-deserved boost for the region’s schools. ‘‘Teachers must have the right tools to deliver a first-class education for their students,’’ he said.

Mrs Ogilvie said the family was hopeful he would return in time to make an appearance at a gala charity ball being held on October 17. Mrs Ogilvie, who has had to retire from her

The man known by some Sunbury residents as King Jack remains as enthusiastic and enterprising as ever as he continues to recover from a major stroke. While long-time Hume councillor Jack Ogilvie remains paralysed on his left side following the July 6 stroke, wife Lesley says he’s progressing relatively well. Fewer ice calls, but cops alert Paramedics are being called to fewer ice-related incidents in Hume, despite widespread fears about the use of crystal methamphetamine. A new report by drug and alcohol centre Turning Point reveals there were 53 call-outs for people under the influence of ice in Hume in 2013-14. The figure was a slight improvement from 2012-13, when paramedics attended 60 cases. Fewer than five cases were recorded in the Macedon Ranges in both years, but experts warn there is no room for complacency with a 27 per cent increase in ice-related ambulance attendances across regional Victoria. Alcohol remains the biggest cause of ambulance call-outs in Sunbury and the Macedon Ranges. Hume paramedics attended 384 alcoholrelated calls in 2013-14, up from 375, while Macedon Ranges ambos were called to 78 call-outs – up from 77. Sunbury Community Health child, youth and family services general manager Marcus Bosch said alcohol remained the most prevalent type of substance abuse. He said that while the ice problem was more significant than it was four years ago, it was important that people didn’t panic. ‘‘We hope community members avoid stigmatising people who are struggling with addictions. That would only contribute to them becoming further marginalised,’’ he said. He said the health service’s strong relationship with police was crucial, with
people often connected with counselling services because of it. As reported by Star Weekly Weekly, nine people were charged after drugs including ice were seized in Sunbury and Romsey on August 13 as part of an operation designed to smash drug manufacturing and trafficking in the area. Macedon Ranges police’s Inspector Ryan Irwin said problems caused by ice spread through the community.

‘‘It’s not an issue we’ll ever solve just by policing alone,’’ Inspector Irwin said. ‘‘I don’t think we’ve seen any significant growth, but it’s fairly consistent.’’ Inspector Irwin said an ice symposium in Woodend next month would bring together experts to discuss how to tackle the problem. He encouraged anyone with information about drug use to contact police. ‘‘Certainly if people are involved in distribution or trafficking we need to hear about it, because that’s the level we’d like to target,” he said. ‘‘People can also contact us if it’s for health issues and we can point them in the right direction.’’ The symposium will be at Norma Richardson Hall from 9am-1.30pm on September 11. EPA admits asbestos breaches Community outrage and a televised expose have led Victoria’s Environment Protection Authority to audit operations at the Bulla Tip and Quarry, prompting the authority to order an independent review of every asbestos tip licence in the state. A recent EPA inspection revealed that asbestos is not being immediately covered with soil at Bulla, leading to concerns for workers’ safety. The inspection followed long-standing Star Weekly coverage of pollution concerns and an airing of Channel 9’s A Current Affair
program on July 27, which showed a tractor using its front loader to compact bags full of asbestos sheeting. The ensuing outrage prompted two EPA visits the following week to assess whether site operators, BTQ Group, were complying with EPA regulations for the proper disposal of asbestos. EPA chief executive Nial Finegan said the inspections “identified irregularities in EPA’s licence approval processes at the site”. “Our investigations have revealed that the most recent licence amendment to allow BTQ to have a separate asbestos disposal area, issued
in 2013, did not follow EPA’s usual stringent approval processes, which aim to ensure bestpractice environmental management,” Mr Finegan said. “This administration error is unacceptable.” He said the error appeared to be confined to the Bulla landfill site, but an independent review of all 30 Victorian quarries licensed to accept asbestos would confirm the situation. Stop Bulla Toxic Tip Action Group spokeswoman Carmel Egan said the EPA’s review was a step in the right direction, but she questioned why BTQ Group was allowed to continue accepting asbestos, given it had
repeatedly breached its EPA licence. The EPA fined the operators more than $14,400 last year for not complying with licence obligations. “Why should we trust these people to change the bad practices that are the trademark of their operation? The EPA should immediately cancel the right of these operators to handle asbestos,” Ms Egan said. Hume council chief executive Domenic Isola said he was very concerned by the EPA’s admissions. “The EPA has admitted that it failed to follow its own standards … this is completely intolerable,” Mr Isola said.

The Sunbury resident, who spent more than 40 years working on Ansett aircraft, said regular catch-ups like next month’s event in Essendon were a chance to reflect on the many positives of life with the Australian carrier. ‘‘It was just one big family. I started at the engine shop back in ’63 … it was an enjoyable place to work, there were always great people who you got to know. ‘‘We try to keep in touch with one another. There’s been about four of them [reunions] so far.’’ Mr Girdwood, who still keeps himself busy working on the restoration of a DC3 at
Tullamarine, said Ansett’s 2001 demise hit many people hard. ‘‘Towards the end there was a dislike for the New Zealand people because they were the ones who walked Ansett into the mess and then ditched it. People were very disappointed. Ansett was a huge part of life in the north-western suburbs. Towards the end there were 13,000 employees between the head office, the airport and the engineering group.’’ Close to 200 people are expected to attend the reunion at Fredricks, 980 Mount Alexander Road, Essendon, from 6pm on September 11. Learning set to music Sunbury Primary School pupils are warming up their vocal chords for the state’s biggest school concert. The group of about 20 songsters will form part of a 1200-child choir that takes to the stage at this year’s State Schools Spectacular. Teacher Charles Schumann says the Sunbury kids, from grades 4-6, are getting plenty of practice ahead of the September 12 event. ‘‘They’ve been rehearsing once a week and have already done one full rehearsal at the [Melbourne] town hall, with another one in a few weeks’ time,’’ he says. Students will also learn choreography to accompany their singing, which range from Pharrell Williams’ Happy to Taylor Swift’s Shake It Off Off. Walkers to stomp on a stigma By Matt Crossman A suicide prevention group working with Macedon Ranges council on a community action plan is encouraging people to ‘‘stomp all over stigma’’ during a Lifeline walk in Woodend next month. Macedon Ranges Suicide Prevention Action Group spokeswoman Annie Rowland said events such as the annual Out of the Shadows walk were an important part of efforts to bring the issue into the light. She said they also reminded people dealing with mental health
problems that they were not alone. More than 200 people took part in last year’s event in Woodend. Ms Rowland said while acknowledging suicide was difficult, doing so as a community could help. ‘‘The walk is an opportunity for us to remember those we have lost, but it’s also an opportunity for our community to show it cares about people who struggle with mental health problems and can provide them with hope for recovery.’’ Australian Bureau of Statistics data shows
more than 2500 people died from suicide in 2013 – 1000 more than from transport deaths. For every death from suicide, it’s estimated that as many as 30 people attempt to end their life. Ms Rowland said priority areas of the draft community action plan included increasing community awareness and reducing stigma, advocacy for increased services and better access to support. Is racism freedom of speech? That’s the question to be debated by close to 100 young people who will meet for a regional schools constitutional convention at Sunbury College this Friday. The school will welcome students from Salesian College, Northcote and Coburg high schools and MacKillop College Werribee and Sunbury Downs, giving them a chance to express and defend their views. Speakers at the conference, run by students and teachers at Sunbury College, will also include McEwen MP Rob Mitchell, author Demet Divaroren and Institute of Public Affairs editor Morgan Begg. Year 10 student Renee Latta, who will argue for the negative, says the event will be a valuable training ground for future leaders. ‘‘When people share a view with evidence that backs up what they are saying, it really makes you think.’’ Matt Crossman

Archicentre Victorian state manager David Hallett says good quality insulation installed by a professional, reputable installer is the most important step people can take in saving energy costs and creating a comfortable environment in their homes. “Ceiling insulation, wall insulation and floor insulation is paramount to the energy-wise home experience,” he said. “Lining the roof, walls and floor can reduce heat loss in winter and heat gain in summer. “People now apprehensive about ceiling insulation shouldn’t be … they should just use a reputable installer and make themselves aware of the quality Australian-made products which can be safely used when installed properly.” Mr Hallett said it was important, both environmentally and economically, to restore community confidence in the insulation industry, installers and Australian manufacturers. Some insulation points to consider when buying or building a home are the orientation of the home to maximise the northern aspect – where exposure to the sun is best controlled. Eaves and pergolas can be precisely designed to block the summer sun and still allow the desirable winter sunshine to penetrate.
North-side deciduous trees that shade the house during summer will allow the sun prime access once they have lost their leaves in winter. Materials with a high thermal mass, such as stone, brick or rammed earth, take a long time to heat up and a long time to cool down. With their high thermal mass, concrete slabs can reap huge benefits from prolonged exposure

to the winter sun, radiating warmth at night when it’s needed most. Glass is a very poor insulator, so for an energy efficient design, locate windows away from the western sun, and in some areas, the eastern sun. Less grand ways to insulate include placing tight-fitting pelmets over curtains and close-fitting blinds to trap air and create a layer of insulation to reduce heat loss on winter nights. Door and window seals can help, as can reversible ceiling fans that can push warm air down in winter.

Thank you BenQ In many years of writing about audio I have come across both good and bad electrostatic speakers, but what I have never encountered are electrostatic speakers that don’t require a second mortgage. (Although an importer once offered me a pair of $20,000 electrostatics that had put in considerable mileage in showrooms and shows for $8000. Bargain. I would have bought them if not for the threat of divorce from my better half.) Electrostatics are imposing beasts. They’re not like normal speakers. Regular speakers have cones that punch in and out to move air and create soundwaves while electrostatics have a wafer-thin sheet of plastic film stretched in an electrostatic field that vibrates with the current to move air. The music they create is so delicate and crisp it seems to hang there, so fragile that if you sneeze you’re afraid it will all crash down. There’s a purity here that’s achingly beautiful. There are electrostatic headphones too but these are similarly expensive. The best-known brand is Stax and they start at $1700. So when BenQ announced a portable electrostatic speaker for $399 I wasn’t just surprised, I was amazed. Like almost every other portable speaker around, BenQ’s treVolo has a rechargeable battery (good for 12 hours) and Bluetooth but, unlike almost every other portable speaker, it isn’t built to thump out heaping helpings of bass, rather its makers say it has been engineered around musical accuracy, with emphasis on the mids and highs. Mind you, electrostatics are notoriously
weak in low-range sound and that’s why the bulk of them have conventional coned woofers built in. And so does the treVolo. It has bass drivers housed in a centre cabinet from which the electrostatic wings, on left and right, fold out. Because the wings can each be folded through 90 degrees, they can be set up to fill quite a large space, even from a corner. So the treVolo sounds like an attractive option to anyone into any music other than hip-hop, punk and rage. In terms of clarity and definition it’s brilliant for $399. All of the electrostatic strengths are abundantly evident. The treVolo is a genuine proposition for people into classical and orchestral music and it also does a good job with vocals, especially female vocals. But if you want something with lots of low end this is not for you. It can handle bass, just not lots of it and, when it gets it, it winds down the volume. And it doesn’t go terribly loud.
A hint: for best detail and performance, mount it so the electrostatic wings are on the same level as your ears.

SPORT Sunbury sticks to amazing ‘habit’ Sunbury Lions’ impressive record will continue, with the club to play in the Ballarat Football League finals for the 19th successive season. The Lions have played finals every year since joining the competition and did it again this year with a 20.8 (128) - 8.9 (57) win over Melton on Saturday to finish sixth. After an even first half, the Lions kicked 11 goals to one in the second. Coach Rick Horwood said it was pleasing to get the job done. “We jumped out to a good start, but they got back to within 10 points at half-time,” he said. “It looked as if the boys were in preservation mode and going through the motions. He was shattered after the game.” The Lions will now be away to third-placed Darley in an elimination final on Saturday. “It’s a pretty massive challenge,” Horwood said. “They touched us up at home the only time we played each other this year. “You have to be in it to win it and we have to go out there with a carefree attitude. “We aren’t expected to win. Lions stalk finals quarry By Tara Murray Sunbury Lions know if they play their best netball they can match it against any contenders in the Ballarat Netball League finals. The Lions have played off in the past two deciders, finishing this season in fourth position from which they’ll play Redan in the second elimination final. On Saturday, they beat last year’s premiers, Melton, 67-32, in a win that allowed them to try out different combinations. Midcourter Prue Stanley was best on court, with Chloe Curran and Rebecca Anstey also having a strong impact. Speaking before the match, Lions’ coach Adam Boldiston said while fourth wasn’t the position they wanted to finish in, he was still reasonably happy with the season. “We were hoping to finish in the top three,” Boldiston said.
“We knew it would be hard to make … and if we had won against North Ballarat City, we could have finished in that third spot. “Fourth is still a good position, considering we had a lot of our starting seven missing [for] several games through the year. “We’re in a good position and in good form at the moment.” Boldiston highlights the game against North Ballarat City as the one that showed the Lions could be among the mix. The Lions fought hard against the undefeated ladder leaders for a nailbiting 63-61 loss. “We matched up really well against them, and we had a full-strength line-up that day. “We were four goals up with four to five minutes to go. There were a couple of mistakes at crucial times … it was a great learning experience and gave us confidence.” Boldiston is hoping to have a full line-up for the elimination final this week.

“As far as I am aware we have a full seven-plus bench,” the coach said. “This gives us great variety and we can mix it up in attack, defence and midcourt.” He said the experience of Prue Stanley and Rebecca Anstey would be valuable, but she highlighted a couple of the younger girls who will also make their mark. “Ruth Smith, our co-captain, is only 21 and has stood up strong all year. “Chloe Curran is only 19 but has a real mature edge on court.” Boldiston expects this week’s match with Redan to be a physical one. “If we stick to the task and do the basic things well, I’m confident we can win. “We need to make sure we’re doing the early work to protect the ball. “Mental toughness will come into the game,” Boldiston said, “and whether we can stay strong.”
Kyneton was five goals up early in the last quarter against Kangaroo Flat and looking set for its first Bendigo Football League finals appearance in 12 years. Instead, the Tigers buckled under the pressure to lose 15.18 (108) - 15.15 (105). The Tigers’ finals dream is still alive – a win this week against bottom side Maryborough will be enough to ensure they finish fifth. Coach Luke Beattie said the last quarter against Kangaroo Flat was a lesson in the demands of finals. “We have a lot of young kids and they got exposure to what I identify as finals pressure,” Beattie said. “The last quarter was what the finals will be like for four quarters every game. “I certainly didn’t get vocal or anything with the boys after the game, as we won 80 per cent of it – we held the upper hand for that time.” Beattie said they would work on composure under pressure during the week. “The composure was the key and I spoke to the boys about hard running as well,” he said. “We need to get a few seniors boys to get the ball moving around the boundary and not drive through the corridor, which is the shortest avenue to goal for the opposition if we turn it over.” He said one positive out of the game was the return of James Meiklejohn from a calf injury. Alik Magin kicked six goals in the loss and Harrison Huntley was adjudged his side’s best player. Beattie said the Tigers wouldn’t be taking Maryborough lightly. “Going up there, we struggled last year and they’re always a competitive beast,” he said. Gisborne has fallen to eighth after losing 19.19 (133) - 8.5 (53) to ladder leader Strathfieldsaye. The Storm jumped out of the blocks, kicking six goals to one in the first quarter. The Bulldogs hit back in the second, outscoring the Storm and reducing the margin to 32 points at the main break. From then on it was all the Storm, which kicked nine goals to two in the second half. Macedon Ranges running club has revealed its spring program, starting August 31 in Lancefield-Romsey and Woodend, and on September 1 in Gisborne, Kyneton, Macedon and Riddells Creek. Coach’s rare departure: on own terms, with good vibe Kangaroos – on his own terms. Friendships are what count most for Meacham from his time at the Kangaroos. “This year, I’ve missed the friendships. It’s been more a player-coach relationship at times. “Nine of the players who played in the 2012 flag with me, played on Saturday. Jamie Cuffe [co-coach of the 2012 side with Meacham] was best-on-ground.” Two premierships, both very different, are among the coach’s memories of a great era. “In 2012, [at the Kangaroos] we had the doubters. “It was special, you always dream of kicking the winning goal in a grand final on the siren. “In 2008 with Riddell, we knew we were going to win it. Lee James, Mick Allen and myself all kicked 100 goals [that season]. “It wasn’t necessarily as special for the club
as the Kangaroos’ flag was, being its first one.” While this season hasn’t been what Meacham and the Kangaroos wanted, there are still plenty of positives to emerge. The downside was epitomised during the week when Simon Clarke did his hamstring at training, for the fourth time. “We just laugh at the luck we’ve had this year,” Meacham said. “Mitch Trimboli and Roger Allen are two young players who have stepped up. Callum Lever is a very good player, and always puts his hand up. “You’ll see more of the kids of the future coming through.” And what does the future hold for Meacham? “Potentially, a perfect fit might see me coach next year somewhere. It’ll be a clean slate.” Tara Murray

It was somehow fitting that Chris Meacham’s last game as coach with the Sunbury Kangaroos was against his old side Riddell. Meacham spent five years at the Bombers and a further six at the Kangaroos, as both player and coach for each of the Riddell District Football League sides. On Saturday, Riddell got the points, ending any chance of finals for the Kangaroos. The Bombers won 22.22 (154) - 8.9 (57). “They are a good side and you’ve got to hand it to them,” Meacham said. “We did a few things in the last quarter, like putting Daniel Gregory forward to get him a goal in his 100th game, so the score didn’t really reflect the game. “It was a pretty emotional day. You don’t understand that until you leave somewhere.” As he left Riddell, so Meacham will leave the

Cats land on their feet By Tara Murray The feeling at Riddell District Football Netball League club Macedon is very different to what it was 12 months ago. This time last year the senior football side was one of the competition’s strugglers and the A-grade netball side missed the finals after losing the last home-and-away match. A year later, both teams are well in the mix for premiership glory. Football coach Jeff Andrews said it was a nice feeling to be in finals again. “Last year we couldn’t make finals from a long way out, winning only four games against two sides,” he said. “There’s a big difference this year. We’re pretty excited and we think we can do some damage in finals.” Andrews said the weekend clash with Diggers Rest was perfect preparation for finals
with the Burras among the contenders. But the Cats lost 20.17 (137) - 8.6 (54) to show they still have work to do. The game was over by quarter-time after the Burras kicked seven goals to two in the first quarter. “It’s like a mini final and the intensity will increase,” Andrews said before the game. “We played our best game of the year [against Lancefield] last week. “We’re starting to hit form and getting some players back.” After a flying start to the season, the Cats have been struck down with injuries in the second half of the season. Andrews said some players returning from injuries lined up in the reserves last week and will add more depth to the squad. “Some players may come straight back into the senior team but it will depend on how long they’ve been out for.”

Jason Davies returned to the senior side on Saturday, while Damien Fitzpatrick isn’t far away. Forward Jack Kernan has played the past two games in the reserves. One player who won’t return is star forward Marcus Kenny. “He had surgery on his knee and is done for the year,” Andrews said. “You have to learn to go from one option in front of goal to finding other options. We did that against Lancefield.” Andrews said the side would tap into what finals experience the club had. “A few of our players have played finals with other clubs. “Shaun Harrison has played in two premierships with Deer Park the last two years. Harro will help ease the butterflies a bit. “And a fair few of our under-18s have played finals, which is a bonus as well.”
The fight for top spot in the Riddell District Football League fizzled out in the final round on Saturday. Four teams could have finished top of the ladder entering the final round, but results meant the top six stayed the same. Riddell’s big win over the Sunbury Kangaroos ensured they finished a game clear atop the ladder. The Bombers dominated from the start then kicked 10 goals in the last quarter to win 22.22 (154) - 8.9 (57). Brian Ruffell kicked 12 for the Bombers in a best-on-ground performance, while Paul Sahlsberg showed why he’s one of the Bowen Medal favourites. The Bombers’ win put paid to any small chance the Kangaroos had of making finals. The Bombers’ qualifying final opponent, Diggers Rest, was impressive in dismantling fellow finalist Macedon. The two sides will play at Greenhill Reserve in Wallan on Saturday. The Burras flew out of the blocks, beating the Cats all over the ground. They led 44-1 at quarter-time and went on to win 20.17 (137) - 8.6 (54). Jason Williams kicked six goals in a best-on-ground performance. The Cats’ run doesn’t get any easier, as they face Romsey in the first round of the finals at Sunbury’s Eric Boardman Reserve on Sunday. After suffering their third loss for the season the week before, the Redbacks were on a mission on Saturday. And Woodend-Hesket was the victim, the Redbacks piling on the goals in a 29.18 (192) - 4.5 (29) thumping. Fourteen players got on the scoresheet for the Redbacks, Mitch Farmer the best with seven goals. Phil Lobb kicked five goals and Farmer was named best on ground. In a round for the goalkickers it was Cameron McRorie who was the dominant force in Rupertswood’s win against Wallan. McRorie kicked 10 in the Sharks’ 16.18 (114) - 8.9 (57) win. He now has 45 for the season and looks likely to end Leigh Brennan’s six-year run as the club’s leading goalkicker. Brennan currently has 41. The third-placed Sharks play Broadford in the other final at Ian Cowie Reserve, Rockbank, on Saturday. Broadford will be used to the ground after beating Rockbank 8.19 (67) - 4.8 (32) there on Saturday. Lancefield finished its season by beating Kilmore 14.16 (100) - 7.6 (48). Tara Murray

Lancefield Netball Club is in an unfamiliar position entering the Riddell District Netball League finals. The Tigers’ A-grade side is playing finals for the first time in at least six years, and it’s the first time anyone at the club can remember all three sides making finals. Tigers coach Alan Watson says it’s an important milestone. “No one at the club can remember this happening before – the As, Bs and under-19s all playing finals – and I’m led to believe it’s six to seven years since the A-grade side made finals.

All six contenders will enter the Riddell District Netball League finals on winning notes. The top five sides all won on Saturday, while Melton Centrals had the bye but were victors against Diggers Rest in the previous round. Riddell has topped the ladder, followed by Rupertswood, Macedon, Romsey, Lancefield and the Centrals. In the closest match of the final round, Macedon beat Diggers Rest 57-50. Rebecca Colwell continued her good season by shooting 53 of the Cats’ 57 goals. Meredith Ball scored 33 goals for the Burras, who finished seventh. The Cats will play Melton Centrals in an elimination final at Ian Cowie Reserve, Rockbank, on Saturday. Riddell, which had a 92-16 win over the Sunbury Kangaroos, will play Rupertswood in a qualifying final on Saturday at Greenhill Reserve, Wallan. The Bombers look likely to have their full squad back, with Lauren Anglin and Lee Chicas returning to the side against the Kangaroos. The Sharks enter the final on the back of a 63-21 win over Wallan. Kirsten Daley put in another best-oncourt performance for the Sharks, with Emma Wright stepping up in defence in the absence of Tess Abbott. Romsey and Lancefield will play in the other elimination final at Eric Boardman Reserve on Sunday. On Saturday, the Redbacks defeated Woodend-Hesket 78-15. Hope Evans, the competition’s leading goalscorer, netted 65 goals to take her tally for the year to 700. Missing both their wings, Tayla Behan and Soli Ropati, the Redbacks had to switch things around with several players taking up multiple positions. Lancefield smashed Kilmore 92-20.

“Three years ago, we didn’t have an A-grade side so we’ve come a very long way. “We will continue to build on this, keep growing to be a more attractive club.” The Tigers enter the finals on a winning note, having smashed Kilmore, 92-20. This win means they finish fifth, and will play Romsey on Sunday at Eric Boardman Reserve in the second elimination final. Watson is hoping the reality check against Macedon in the second-last round will ensure the Tigers are ready for finals. “We had the opportunity to finish third on the ladder if we’d won that game, but we didn’t play four quarters,” Watson recalled. “At the end of it, they played four quarters and we didn’t. “We stopped leading and working hard. Our shooting percentage wasn’t good enough and it’s dropped from the start of the year. “Against the Cats, one girl shot at 25 per cent and another at 44. You can’t win games with those sorts of issues.” Watson said injuries hadn’t helped the side in recent weeks. But in a change of fortune, Savaii Williams returned against Kilmore in a best-on-court performance, while Alannah Gottschalk is expected to be back to play Romsey. “We haven’t had luck with injuries the past few weeks,” the coach said. “We’ve had people sick and injured; seven were missing against Macedon. “We need everyone on the court at the same time.” As for facing the experienced Romsey this week? “We have a younger playing group and it’s an opportunity for the youngsters to step up,” Watson says. “We have youth on our side and I think it could be the telling factor. There’s plenty of speed and run in our team.”

Dogs primed and snarling Gisborne will enter the finals with a full squad. “We have different combinations and the capability to match it all over the court with the other sides in the finals,” Trevillian said. She said having players missing during the season was a benefit come finals. “Our A-reserve players can rotate on the court and we can try different things. It’s important that they’ve got court time in the senior team.” She said the team needed to stick to its own game plan to match it with the top two sides. Finals experience would also come in handy for the Bulldogs, who made last year’s preliminary. Golden Square remains undefeated, while Sandhurst has had two losses and a drawn match against the Bulldogs. Finals came two weeks early for Gisborne in the Bendigo Netball League. The fourth-placed Bulldogs entered the last two rounds facing clashes with third-placed Strathfieldsaye and fifth-placed Kangaroo Flat. Two wins would have meant finishing third and earning the double chance come finals. The Bulldogs lost the first of those matches, 41-38, against the Storm. It now means the result of the game against Kangaroo Flat is irrelevant because regardless of who wins this weekend, the Dogs and Kangaroos will face each other again in the first week of finals. Bulldogs coach Simone Trevillian said before the match against Strathfieldsaye that playing the top sides in the finals lead-up was the perfect warm-up. “They’re pre-finals and we’re treating them that way,” she said. “It’s quite pleasing to have three games which are like finals and we need to be competitive and positive. ”
