Gates close on gardens A Macedon garden that quite literally rose from the ashes of the Ash Wednesday bushfires makes a fascinating backdrop for Victoria’s final season of the Open Gardens Australia scheme. The scheme, which has partnered with more than 20,000 garden owners since it started in 1987, has raised more than $6 million for charities. But declining visiting numbers have forced it to shut down. Tugurium, owned by plantsman Stephen Ryan and botanic artist Craig Lidgerwood, has opened with Open Gardens Australia 35 times over the past 25 years. Mr Ryan says garden lovers are shattered about the scheme’s imminent closure but he’s hopeful that a state-based group will re-emerge. He knows about picking up the pieces, having developed his 0.4-hectare garden from a burnt-out block after 1983’s Ash Wednesday disaster. ‘‘When I bought it in 1985, there wasn’t a thing planted,’’ Mr Ryan says. Today, Tugurium is loaded with rare plants, trees and ponds. Mr Ryan says with winter close, visitors have a great opportunity to ‘‘see the bones’’ of the unique garden. Medcraft terror storm By Matt Crossman An investigation is under way after a Hume councillor referred to the municipality as the ‘‘terrorist training centre of Australia’’ on a closed social media group. Cr Jack Medcraft, who made the comments in response to a link about counter-terrorism raids in the area earlier this month, has apologised for causing offence but said a serious discussion was needed about terror links in Hume. ‘‘Welcome to Hume, the terrorist training centre of Australia,’’ he said on Facebook. In a reference to a 2003 ban on ham and
pork at council functions, Cr Medcraft added: ‘‘First it was ham sandwiches we were known for, now this garbage. Watch out Sunbury, we could be next.’’ It’s understood the comments have since been deleted. Cr Medcraft last week returned from a 28-day suspension handed down after a probe into his alleged bad behaviour at a community meeting in Broadmeadows late last year. There have been several alleged terrorist links to Hume this year. Jake Bilardi, of Craigieburn, and Suhan Rahman, of Roxburgh Park, were reportedly killed fighting overseas for Islamic State, while a 17-year-old was arrested in a
counter-terrorism operation in Greenvale on May 8. Cr Medcraft said he was tired of people ‘‘fobbing off’’ the serious issue of terrorism. ‘‘My comments were tongue in cheek; they weren’t meant with any malice,’’ he said. ‘‘But a lot of people are very worried about what’s going on. I’m sick and tired of people looking at Hume for all the wrong reasons.’’ Cr Medcraft said he was disappointed that his comments had sparked a furore while little had been done about another councillor’s reference to Sunbury as a racist community. Mr Isola said Hume took enormous pride in the fact it is one of Australia’s most harmonious and multicultural communities. ‘‘Our residents come from more than 166 different countries and speak more than 120 languages, and we think that’s one of the best things about Hume,’’ he said. Spotlight on CCTV success By Matt Crossman Residents and businesses are being asked for their feedback about Sunbury’s closed circuit television system as Hume council seeks to evaluate how cameras help reduce crime and antisocial behaviour. A short survey sent to participants of previous consultation sessions asks how safe people consider the town centre and whether cameras make a difference. Last month, Star Weekly reported that
police and businesses believe the cameras help pinpoint offences and boost perceptions of safety. Cameras are located at the Brook and Evans streets intersection, Brook Street newsagency, Evans Arcade, O’Shannassy Street and at the corner of Evans Street and Gap Road. Footage is monitored from Sunbury police station. The system was installed following a state government grant and 20 cameras were switched on in April last year in a bid to deter would-be offenders and help solve crimes.

Budget bias rejected Hume council has defended claims that its 2015-16 budget is too focused on the east of the municipality. Cr Jack Ogilvie last week made a lone stand against the draft budget, which proposes an average rates increase of 5.3 per cent, saying there was little in it for Sunbury. ‘‘Councils can either be serious about this or laugh off what the community is saying about cutting costs,’’ he said. Cr Ogilvie said ‘‘all the big money’’ was being spent in areas such as Craigieburn, with some projects in Sunbury either carried over or restricted to planning stages. Chief executive Domenic Isola said the budget delivered significant funding to projects that would benefit Sunbury families, including planning for a new warm water pool at Sunbury Aquatic Centre ($400,000), designs for a new civic centre ($2 million) and reconstruction and duplication of a Wildwood Road bridge. A total of $1.75 million has been set aside to redevelop the McMahon pavilion at Clarke Oval. Also funded was the refurbishment of a pavilion at Langama Park ($650,000) and works at the Riddell Road landfill. Mayor Adem Atmaca said the Clarke Oval works would benefit a large number of people. Sunbury Residents Association president Bernie O’Farrell said the rates increase was roughly four times CPI. ‘‘It’s completely irresponsible,’’ he said. Sunbury Community Progress Association president Alison Cunningham said Sunbury continued to get a fair deal.

Mums and Labor MPs have slammed this year’s federal budget, labelling moves to strip paid parental leave entitlements from almost 50 per cent of parents as the mother of all insults. The government said the controversial plan, announced on Mother’s Day, is designed to stop new mums from ‘‘double dipping’’ by getting parental leave from employers and the government. Mothers can currently access payments from a government scheme and their workplace, if their employer has one. The government will also cut family tax benefits and childcare rebates in a move designed to get stay-at-home parents working.

Big chill adds to fire risk By Matt Crossman
Retailers and shoppers alike have welcomed the new-look Gisborne town centre. The $400,000 streetscape renewal project, including bluestone seating, speed humps, asphalt footpaths and tree pits, also improves pedestrian safety on Brantome and Hamilton streets. Underground drainage has also been upgraded to combat flooding problems. The works, jointly funded by Macedon Ranges council and the state government, aimed to address tripping hazards and slippery surfaces while improving the overall appearance of the retail centre. A Macedon Ranges council spokeswoman said outdoor seating, bicycle hoops and trees will be in place by the end of next month. Budget savings mean a pathway on Hamilton Street’s service road will also be extended. Cr Russell Mowatt said the works greatly improved one of Gisborne’s busiest trading areas. ‘‘Feedback I’ve received from the community shows that people welcome the safety improvements,’’ he said. Gabby Martinuzzo, manager of Flamin’ Chicken take-away in Brantome Street, said the short-term inconvenience caused by the works had been worth it. ‘‘It’s certainly a lot better for pedestrians,’’ Ms Martinuzzo said. ‘‘I haven’t heard one negative comment.’’ Matt Crossman

Sunbury and Macedon Ranges residents are being urged to have their heaters checked to help prevent the costly damage and potential trauma of a winter house fire. With last week’s cold snap sending people scurrying for extra sources of heat, the CFA has warned that winter is a residential fire danger period. Firefighters were called to more than 1650 house fires across the state last year, resulting in 16 deaths. There were 13 house fires in the Macedon Ranges and 42 in Hume. Experts said faulty electrical heaters and poorly maintained gas units could lead to tragic incidents, while wood heating was not without its dangers. Riddells Creek CFA community safety manager Dean Anderson said the brigade attended at least one or two chimney fires every winter. “The risk of fires in the home certainly increases during the winter months because the added demand we place on our heating and electrical appliances,” he said. CFA state duty officer Rohan Luke said gas heaters should be serviced annually, with poorly maintained units increasing the risk of deadly carbon monoxide poisoning. ‘‘There can be no greater reason to have your gas heater inspected and serviced than to ensure the safety of loved ones,’’ he said. ‘‘Another common mistake is people drying clothes indoors near heaters and fireplaces. Clothes should be kept at least one metre from the heat source.’’ The CFA has started a “safe mistake” campaign to raise awareness of small mistakes that may lead to house fires. Homes on the range lure buyers By Matt Crossman Affordable Macedon Ranges properties are being snapped up ‘‘overnight’’ as rising Melbourne prices fuel interest in fringe areas. Gisborne Real Estate director Janis Paul said people are increasingly buying in the Macedon Ranges because of price not just lifestyle. ‘‘You can buy a block of land in Gisborne for $220,000 … you’d never get that close to Melbourne in a quality area,’’ she said. Latest Real Estate Institute of Victoria figures show the median house price in New Gisborne rose 9.6 per cent in the March quarter to $556,300. The figure is well above the regional Victorian median price of $341,000.
Median prices in Kyneton increased 7.5 per cent to $465,000, while Gisborne was up 0.8 per cent to $540,000. Woodend’s median fell 0.8 per cent to $645,000, while the figure for Macedon was unchanged at $600,000. Prices in Romsey were up 4.4 per cent for the quarter to $412,000, while Riddells Creek’s median increased 1.8 per cent to $560,000. Ms Paul said banks seemed to be ‘‘friendly’’ and finance was good, leading to healthy interest in private sales. She said the average time houses spent on the market was down. ‘‘If it’s a bargain, if it’s a cheap property or if it’s affordable, it goes overnight.

Helpers at Kyneton Museum have been given a hands-on conservation lesson as part of National Volunteers Week. Museum co-ordinator Alison Buchanan showed volunteers how to document and preserve the museum’s textile collection during five-hour workshops last Tuesday and Wednesday. The museum has a significant collection of garments from the 1880s to 1940s, including wedding dresses and even kilts donated by local families. Ms Buchanan said that while the museum had two paid employees, its 10 volunteers were crucial. ‘‘Without them, it would be a real struggle. After elections in 2012, Macedon Ranges council owed $4 million. This year’s budget rockets debt to $14 million. Council is borrowing another $6.5 million; $817,000 of this borrowed money is earmarked for future repayment of loans; debt servicing is out to $824,000 this year ($500,000 interest). Anyone remember current councillors saying they would do this before elected? How about the unseen, unconsulted, unexplained Gisborne office extension? Stage one costs, originally $700,000, are now $1.5 million, with a new $800,000 ($500,000 loan) cost, and a mysterious $1.2 million ($1 million loan), up for approval in this budget. Compare this with the $1.6 million from rates the council will spend on roads. This year Hanging Rock funds are moved from a mandatory statutory financial reserve (required by law) to a discretionary financial reserve (kept at council’s discretion). What’s going on? Isn’t the Rock public open space and a community facility any more? No sign of concert income, either. Although it’s good $40,000 goes to street tree renewal, more ($55,000) is spent on something called ‘events and festival co-ordination’. Council’s ubiquitous “under five per cent” rate rise (well above inflation), together with increases in charges, reaps an additional $2.6 million (or an extra 6.2 per cent) in council’s total rates and charges income. Don’t overlook customer fees and charges (appendix C4). Most everything the community pays for goes up. Most everything developers pay for doesn’t – in

A Sunbury-based councillor, who was suspended for 28 days after a second probe into his conduct at a fiery town hall meeting, says money spent on a political ‘witchhunt’ could have helped save programs for at-risk youth. But the council maintains the initial investigation had to be handled by an independent body because it included complaints about the organisation. Cr Jack Medcraft said the cost of the first probe, which he claims ‘‘solved nothing’’, could have funded two Moving Forward programs to give young people ‘‘a fighting chance’’. The council has previously called on the
federal government to reinstate funding for the eight-week program, which helped young people who had disengaged from education or employment. An invoice seen by Star Weekly shows the first investigation, which Cr Medcraft and Cr Jack Ogilvie have claimed cleared them of any wrongdoing, cost $32,849.83. Cr Medcraft said the money could have been saved by keeping the investigation in-house. ‘‘Instead, it’s spent all this money on a witchhunt,’’ he said. ‘‘It’s a total waste of ratepayers’ money.’’ Hume chief executive Domenic Isola said the initial probe included complaints about the organisation.
‘‘A council can’t investigate itself,’’ he said. Mr Isola said the subsequent Municipal Association of Victoria conduct panel considered a range of evidence, including the initial report, in drawing its conclusion. As reported by Star Weekly Weekly, Cr Medcraft is appealing his one-month suspension after the second inquiry into claims he breached the code of conduct. Cr Ogilvie was reprimanded. The probes followed complaints made after a meeting at Broadmeadows Town Hall last September. It was alleged Cr Medcraft tussled with a Broadmeadows Progress Association supporter over a sign and yelled at a number of people. Cr Ogilvie was accused of intimidating behaviour.
Towers shine a light on more fun Light towers are up at Gisborne’s Gardiner Reserve as the first stage of a major upgrade nears completion. The $350,000 project, including a netball court reconstruction, is funded by Macedon Ranges council, the state government and local sports clubs. The towers, which will allow for night football and netball matches and other events, were due to go up early last week but works were delayed due to wet weather. They eventually went up on Thursday. Gardiner Reserve Community Project committee spokesman Paul Doolan says people will notice the lights on for extended periods, with 100 hours of testing required as a condition of their first use. He says the upgrades, which will also include

the addition of an electronic screen and scoreboard, will open up Gardiner Reserve to more sporting clubs and community groups. ‘‘These changes are to allow other associations and groups to utilise the area and bring more people into the centre of town,’’ Mr Doolan says. The new screen is expected to improve the experience for people attending matches and allow new ways of fundraising, such as movie nights. Plans for stage two works include an amphitheatre between Gardiner and Sankey reserves for use by schools and groups. A woman allegedly stood by and laughed as four men held knives to the throat of another man during a robbery at The Nook reserve in Sunbury. Police said the 21-year-old victim was sitting on a swing listening to music when four men robbed him of his wallet and iPod about 1am on May 3. He was not injured. Police wish to speak to the men, all believed to be Caucasian and aged in their late teens. They were wearing dark or grey hoodies and tracksuit pants. SPORT Player points, salary cap plan goes out to leagues AFL Goldfields is encouraging its clubs to get ready for the introduction of a players points system and salary cap next season. AFL Victoria released the draft framework for its community club sustainability program last Thursday, and AFL Goldfields will brief clubs in its Ballarat, Riddell District and Maryborough and Castlemaine District leagues this week. The AFL Vic plan proposes capping total player payments and ranking players on their previous playing history. The draft indicates how the player points system will work and what classifications players fall under in determining salary caps. Penalties for breaching the salary cap include relegation, club fines, loss of points, suspended
from finals and player suspensions. Club finances will also be subject to audits. Players who have played AFL in the previous three seasons will attract the most points. Six points will be allocated to them while state league tier 1 players (VFL, WAFL, SANFL) will command five points and state league tier 2 players (NEAFL, TASFL) get four points. Also in the four-point bracket are TAC Cup players and “premium community players.” A player’s standing as a “premium community player” will be determined by finishing positions in league and club best-and-fairest and goal-kicking leader boards, while home-grown players and people who haven’t played in 36 months will be worth one point each.
The longer a player has been at the club, the lower their points become. AFL Goldfields general manager Rod Ward said meetings would take place with clubs this week. “We’ll be encouraging the points system on every team sheet for the rest of the year, so they get used to it,” Ward said. One element of the points system that is crucial to all leagues is the ability to award extra points to clubs. “It allows us to have the ability to put in our regional strategies,” said Ward. “Smaller clubs, clubs with less juniors and clubs down at the bottom of the ladder for a few years can get extra points.” AFL Goldfields is now reviewing its junior
Rep squad thrills coach By Tara Murray A mixture of experience and youth is the key as Riddell District Netball League chases success at the AFL Victoria Country Championships on Saturday. The team of 10 players includes five from last year’s team, while eight of the side have previously represented the league at various competitions. Melton Centrals’ Renee Hulls and Tran Troung, Rupertswood’s Ailish McCormack, Romsey’s Hope Hamilton and Riddell’s Christine Harris return from last year’s interleague team. Riddell’s Danni Davidson is back in the squad after playing interleague in 2013 and playing in the league’s Regional State League (RSL) side last season. Harris and McCormack, and Rupertswood’s Tess Abbott and Emily Katona, were in the league’s RSL side which lost in overtime to the Ballarat Netball League in the Central Highlands grand final earlier this year. The two new players in the team are Riddell’s Bridget Aughton and Kilmore’s Samantha George. Interleague coach Di McCormack said she was excited by the squad, which will play against the Nepean Netball League. “To have Bridget [a Victorian Netball League player] in the squad is really great and it’s her first time representing the league.” she said. “I’m looking forward to having her in the defensive end with Tess and Danni, which provides an experienced back half. “I coached Christine in the RSL competition and I know how she plays. Double trouble for downed Jets It was a bad weekend for Sunbury Jets’ senior sides, with both the men’s and women’s side easily beaten in their Big V division 1 matches. The men were on the back foot early against Melton on Sunday and never recovered, losing 101-74. The Jets were down by nine points at quarter-time and the margin was out to 16 by half-time. The third quarter saw the Jets cut the gap to 15 points and maintain hopes of a comeback, but it wasn’t to be. The Thoroughbreds put the foot down in the final quarter, outscoring the Jets 24-12. Much of the damage to the Jets was done on the boards, as they took only 26 rebounds compared to the Thoroughbreds’ 57. Four of the Jets’ five starters reached double figures, with Luke Valentine top-scoring with 18 points. The Jets’ women’s side lost 84-67 to Camberwell on Saturday night. It was a close game for most of the night, with the Jets trailing by only five points at half-time. But as was the case in the first half, Camberwell made two or three more baskets for the quarter to extend the lead. Camberwell ran away with the game in the last quarter, outscoring the Jets 27-19. Kelsey Sigl was dominant for the Jets with 21 points and 18 rebounds, but ended the game on the bench when she was fouled out. Leanne Urbon chipped in with 11 points. It was better news for the Jets’ youth sides who had big wins. It had been a tough couple of weeks for the youth men’s side in division 1, losing three out of their past four matches. But they came out firing against Ballarat, hitting 12 of 20 field goal attempts on the way to a 19-point quarter-time lead. This set the tone for the game, with the Jets winning 100-52. Luke Collins top-scored with 23 points, while Jeremy Wragg had 11 points, 12 rebounds and four steals. In the youth women’s game, the Jets beat Southern Peninsula 60-46. Bulldogs struggle, Tigers charge By Tara Murray Gisborne’s start to the Bendigo Football League season has given the club a reality check. Used to sitting in the top half of the competition, the Bulldogs have had just one win after the first five rounds and are ninth on the ladder. Coach Rod Sharp said the side had copped a right whack for not doing the work needed. “It has been a disappointing year so far,” Sharp said. “It probably comes from the commitment levels in the preseason.
“We have been competitive in every game for a quarter or half but haven’t been fit enough to play out the whole game.” On Saturday, the scoreboard wasn’t pretty as the Bulldogs lost to Sandhurst 17.25 (127) - 1.4 (10). Sharp said the final score wasn’t a true reflection of the game. “We deserved to have kicked more than one goal. We were missing eight of our best 15 players, including our two key forwards Matthew Knox and Jarryd Lynch. “Isaac Trickey did his hamstring in the first
quarter, then a kid got knocked out in the second quarter and when we lost Tim Walsh in the third quarter, it left us with only one player on the bench, “When you only have one rotation, you are going to be hurt by scoreboard pressure.” Sharp said Knox and Lynch were likely to return after the interleague break but said depth was proving to be a problem. Working on the fitness levels will be a major focus for Sharp. “We need to build on fitness at the moment and that will come through solid work on the
track,” he said. “Hopefully that will improve in the next three to four weeks. We have four weeks of games we could win. “If we can win three of them, it will give us confidence and you never know what will happen.” Kyneton returned to the winners’ list with a 21.13 (139) - 18.9 (117) win over Castlemaine. Alik Magin continued his good form with six goals, while Mitch Scholard kicked five goals. In the A-grade netball, the Bulldogs drew with Sandhurst 38-38, while the Tigers had a massive win over Castlemaine 59-29.

Erratic Sharks finally get it all right For the first time this season Rupertswood played four quarters of football on their terms in the Riddell District Football League. It has been an up-and-down start to the season for the Sharks, who had an up day against Melton Centrals on Saturday in a 23.7 (145) - 4.8 (32) win. The Sharks were able to move the ball easily, which resulted in the side’s first 100-point tally of the season. Coach Ben Jordan said his side’s ball movement was a real positive. “Our focus was on getting back to our style of football,” Jordan said. “We started the game with confidence and once we started to get goals, we were away. “In other games we had missed easy shots and weren’t able to impact the scoreboard.
“That wasn’t the case against Melton; we went back to the basics.” Leigh Brennan kicked six goals and showed some of his form from last season, while Brett Chambers also bobbed up with six. “Brett is one who can play in many positions and we decided to play him forward on Saturday,” Jordan said. “He has kicked a lot of goals for other clubs. “Leigh, when up and about, is very dangerous. He had been a little off the boil but in this game he held his marks. “All the boys have been working hard and some have picked up some form.” The Sharks sit 3-2 going into the interleague break. “We’re reasonably happy with where we are, but we were disappointed with the games
against Sunbury Kangaroos and Diggers Rest, where we weren’t competitive,” Jordan said. In other results, Diggers Rest bounced back with a thrashing of Woodend-Hesket, Sunbury Kangaroos remain undefeated after beating Wallan, Romsey smashed Kilmore, Riddell took the points against Lancefield and Broadford beat Rockbank. Woodend looks for new coach Woodend Cricket Club is searching for a coach for the new Gisborne and District Cricket Association season. Club president Ronan Hume said last season’s coach, Adam Johnstone, had stood down for personal reasons. “Adam has work and family commitments, which made it hard for him to coach the side as well,” Hume said. “He works as firefighter, so he thought it was best that he should stand down. He will still play, just not coach.” Woodend finished on top of the McIntyre Cup ladder last season before being knocked out in the opening round of the finals. Hume is hoping the new coach will help the side take the next step. “We would prefer a playing coach but will look at everyone,” he said. “We are open to the person not having coaching experience – it’s about getting the right person.” B-grade side Rupertswood is also advertising for a senior coach. Bitter-sweet for Lions By Tara Murray It was a tale of two halves for Sunbury Lions in the Ballarat Football League match against Melton on Saturday night. The Lions were outworked and outplayed in the first half, especially in the first quarter when play was interrupted when the siren went off mid quarter. Coach Rick Horwood’s disgust at the team’s effort was clear as some of his quarter-time spray was heard halfway across the ground. But a goal just before the half-time siren saw the Lions in front at the main break. They exerted control to put the score on the board in the third quarter and the young backline stood tall in the last, going on to win 12.10 (82) - 6.9 (45). Horwood said the first half of football
was his team’s worst of the season so far. “It was disappointing as we had planned for Melton to start well,” he said. “Melton played well early last week and we knew it would happen again. “We didn’t stand up and the effort was very poor. It was the worst half this year.” The Lions turned the match around in the third quarter. “It was how we wanted to play,” Horwood said. “We won the contested football and inside-50s and captain Andrew Duhau and Greg Hay stood up and led the way in the third quarter.” Horwood was full of praise for his defence in the last quarter. “The first 12-13 minutes in the last quarter they stood tall,” he said. “Trent Stead was playing his second
game, Tanner Bell was playing his third and Stephen Treweek was playing his 10th. “There are some good signs.” The young players will need to continue to step up over the next few weeks, with key defender Adam Short set to miss six to eight weeks with an ankle injury. The Lions enter the interleague break 3-2. “I’m happy with 3-2 and see it as a pass mark, although it would have been nice to be 4-1,” Horwood said. “We have a crucial block after the week off playing Redan, Bacchus Marsh and North Ballarat City. “It’s exciting.” The Lions women’s side continued its winning start to the season, easily beating Manor Lakes Manor Lakes 13.15 (93) - 1.1 (7) on Saturday night.
It has been a big couple of weeks for two of Riddell Umpires’ most experienced officials. Robert Semmens and Tim Rath, with more than 2000 umpiring games between them, celebrated senior milestones in the opening five weeks of the Riddell District Football League season. In round two, Semmens became the first field umpire at Riddell Umpires to officiate 400 senior games. Semmens started umpiring on the boundary in the Federal League, which was linked to the VFL reserve grade. Tim Rath, who has the second most senior games behind Semmens, umpired his 300th senior game during Lancefield and Riddell’s match on Saturday. Only eight Riddell umpires have reached the 300 senior game mark.
