Cafe crash horror A woman with a baby was sitting outside a busy Sunbury cafe seconds before a white ute ploughed through dining tables and chairs. Cheeky Kebabs owner Sarah Kucukbas said the woman had just stepped back into the Evans Street store when the ute, which was being driven on the footpath, sent tables and chairs flying about 4pm last Tuesday.
‘‘It was very scary. I’m still shaking,’’ Ms Kucukbas said. ‘‘It was horrifying to see that happen. I don’t know how a ute could even fit down there.’’ Ms Kucukbas said someone could easily have been killed or seriously injured. ‘‘There are usually people out there at that time,’’ she said. ‘‘We’re just so happy no one was hurt.’’ CCTV footage shows a man on the footpath
in front of the cafe stepping back from the path of the utility, which clipped a pole and crashed through four tables. A member of the public reached in and removed the keys from the ignition and stayed with the driver until police arrived. Police said the driver was under the influence of drugs and a quantity of cannabis was found in the vehicle. Sergeant Justin Pollock said a Sunbury
man, 30, would be charged on summons with drug and traffic offences. He said the incident could easily have been much worse. ‘‘The area is a very busy strip. significant. But it said the eastern paddock had no historical connection to the broader reserve. As a result of the decision, Macedon Ranges council must seek a permit from Heritage Victoria for any works at the reserve outside of exemptions included in the listing. The exemptions will allow landscaping works, events that won’t affect structures and features, and maintenance to roads and buildings.
A community group which fought for Hanging Rock to be included on the state’s heritage register is pleased to have finally secured its listing, but is upset that the eastern paddock will not receive special protection. The Heritage Council announced on Friday that Hanging Rock Reserve was of cultural significance and warranted inclusion. But it ruled that the eastern paddock, where a series of concerts have been held, should not be included on the register. Hanging Rock Action Group (HRAG) spokesman Matthew Nickson said the community had worked hard for the reserve’s significance to be recognised. ‘‘We think it’s fantastic news that the rock will be protected but we are very disappointed that the eastern paddock was not included,’’ Mr Nickson said. The campaign gained momentum following a controversial proposal for a resort-style development at the rock. Hanging Rock’s “national estate” listing lapsed in 2003 after heritage reforms. In May last year, Macedon Ranges council abandoned plans to seek investment after the state government announced a $1 million maintenance fund, provided over four years. Following a hearing held in October last year, the Heritage Council determined the reserve – described by the curator of Melbourne’s Natural History Museum in 1855 as ‘‘one of the most remarkable spots in Victoria, if not in whole Australia’’ – was historically and socially

Mayor Jennifer Anderson said the Rock’s listing was a great outcome for the community. ‘‘This decision recognises Hanging Rock’s important place in Victoria, for its cultural significance as a destination people have visited for a long time,’’ Cr Anderson said. ‘‘There are very strict inclusion criteria, and those who put forward the proposal and spent many hours working on the submission are to be congratulated.’’

Cops crack down in school zones By Matt Crossman Police are conducting extra patrols of busy school crossings after complaints about drivers flouting 40km/h speed limits. A crossing in Aitken Street, Gisborne, is among those being targeted, with the highway patrol’s Sergeant Geoff Neil and Macedon Ranges council responding to incidents of people speeding through school zones or ignoring directions of crossing supervisors. Sergeant Neil said a small minority were putting pedestrians and crossing staff at risk.
‘‘Local police are being extra vigilant and devoting extra patrol time to ensure students and crossing supervisors are not endangered,” Sergeant Neil said. ‘‘In particular, we’ve been targeting the crossing on Aitken Street in Gisborne as this has a high volume of traffic. ‘‘Drivers need to expect the unexpected, particularly from younger children.” Gisborne Primary School principal Ian Stove said most drivers were respectful of crossing supervisors and there had been no major problems at the school.

‘‘Most people know it’s of paramount importance,’’ he said. Council assets and operations director Dale Thornton said that across the shire, there had been a rise in reports of motorists speeding through crossings or attempting to drop off and pick up children in no-standing zones.
He said the difficult job of a crossing supervisor was made harder by people doing the wrong thing. ‘‘We ask motorists to appreciate the supervisors’ hard work and respect their commitment to ensuring our children are safe,’’ Mr Thornton said. Motorists who fail to obey crossing supervisors face a $369 fine and three demerit points. Those caught driving at 65km/h or above in a school zone face the threat of having their licences suspended for one month.
Seniors wise to web Seniors are learning the difference between their tweets, likes and pins thanks to a new clinic at Woodend Neighbourhood House. Twitter, Facebook and Pinterest are among the programs being explored as part of a weekly service to help seniors’ unlock the potential of their smartphones, computers and tablets. Every Friday, three year 9 students from Braemar College will nut out the technology problems of community members and graduates of the neighbourhood house’s introductory computer class. Co-ordinator Jill Scanlon says the clinic, which started in late February, has been a hit. ‘‘Once our students have completed their seven-week course, they often need a helping hand to solve day-to-day technological challenges,’’ Ms Scanlon says. ‘‘We’re excited the year 9 students from Braemar can help us solve this unmet need.’’
Braemar year 9 co-ordinator Lisa Fritz says the clinic forms part of the school’s community service module. ‘‘Students will provide assistance with all aspects of online use, from Skyping family and loved ones to paying the bills,’’ she says The clinic is open from 2-3pm. A Hume councillor says he will push for the council to seek compensation of up to $1 million if the state government decides to wind back plans for an independent Sunbury. Cr Jack Medcraft said staff had spent many hours working on the secession project. ‘‘There have been countless meetings and briefings over the past few years,’’ he said. ‘‘If this doesn’t go ahead as planned, that’s all time that could have been spent doing other things. If you work out the hourly rate of the executive staff involved, you’re looking at some pretty significant compensation.’’ Cr Medcraft said Labor had guaranteed before last November’s state election that the secession would go ahead. Acting in the final days before going into caretaker mode, the former Liberal government gazetted formal orders for Sunbury City to come into existence on July 1 this year. It also set boundaries for the new municipality and appointed an administrator and interim chief executive. Cr Medcraft said a compensation claim would be justified. ‘‘If they’re going to go back on this they’re going to have to pay, just like East-West Link,’’ he said. Cr Ann Potter said there was no doubt a lot of time had been invested by council staff. ‘‘But as a council, it’s not something we have discussed at all,’’ she said of compensation. Pro-split supporters met Local Government Minister Natalie Hutchins late last month but received no confirmation that Sunbury City would come into existence in July as planned. A spokeswoman for Ms Hutchins, who is leading a review of the secession project, did not respond before Star Weekly went to print.

Some might say Cathy Cleve is brave for being willing to shave the thick, dark and wavy locks that fall down past her shoulders. But the Lancefield resident says it’s nothing compared to the courage exhibited by her close friend, Kilmore’s Helena Schembri. Ms Cleve, who will go under the clippers for the World’s Greatest Shave on March 14, hopes to raise $2500 for the Leukaemia Foundation. Weapons seized

A Sunbury woman charged with firearms and weapons offences has faced an out-of-sessions court hearing. Police allege nine guns and a number of weapons were found in her car on Tuesday evening after the car was pulled over as part of a routine patrol in Elizabeth Drive just after 6.30pm. Police said they found handguns, an automatic machine gun and several long arms, as well as ammunition. Machetes, a bow and a conductedenergy device were also seized. Bianca Micallef, 23, was remanded in custody to face Broadmeadows Magistrates Court.

Businesses are being urged to follow Sunbury Community Health’s (SCH) lead and do more to help employees live healthier lives. As part of an expanded staff well-being program, SCH has organised delivery of fruit and vegetable boxes from Sunbury Fruit Market to the organisation’s sites on alternate days each week. ‘‘The fruit, and even the vegetables, disappear in a matter of days,’’ human resources co-ordinator Trudi Collins said. ‘‘People love them.’’ SCH has also introduced sit-stand workstations, free gym access, walking challenges and staff-led yoga sessions.
Ms Collins said employees were encouraged to suggest and plan new ways to promote better health. ‘‘We’re very lucky to have many engaged and qualified staff who are willing to give their time to support well-being initiatives,’’ she said. The approach has led to real benefits and Ms Collins said staff were more connected and SCH was experiencing lower levels of unplanned leave. ‘‘Staff are thinking and talking about making healthier choices in and outside the workplace,’’ she said. Wind keeps SES busy
Many Sunbury residents were caught by surprise by wild weather on February 28, according to the SES. The local unit responded to more than 90 calls for help after 130km/h wind swept through the area. An SES spokesman said most calls were for trees over roads, although several buildings were also damaged. Ranges abuzz over wasp threat By Matt Crossman Macedon Ranges residents are being urged to be extra careful when enjoying picnics or barbecues after a rise in the number of wasps buzzing around parks and gardens. European wasps, which are especially attracted to sweet foods, drinks and meat, have become a regular sight in towns including Woodend, Kyneton, Lancefield and Romsey. Small numbers of wasps have also been found flying inside houses. Kyneton District Health chief executive
Maree Cuddihy said there had been a noticeable increase in reports of wasp bites this year. In the past fortnight, six people had presented at the hospital after being stung but there had been no serious allergic reactions. Lancefield’s Jenny Luhrs said her partner was bitten while working on their land. ‘‘They seem to have been everywhere this year, especially around water sources,’’ said Ms Luhrs. European wasps were accidentally introduced to Australia in the 1950s and were first reported in Victoria in 1977.
A lack of predators and good weather conditions mean their numbers continue to increase. According to experts, they usually attack only when provoked or defending their nest. They are also attracted to moving objects, meaning swatting them aggravates their behaviour. Unlike bees, wasps can sting multiple times and bites to the throat can be fatal. Macedon Ranges council has received a large number of inquiries from people wanting to know how to deal with wasps nesting on their property.
Community safety manager Anne-Louise Lindner said anyone who found a nest on their land should contact a qualified pest controller. People can reduce their risk of being stung by pouring drinks into glasses and paying attention before consuming mouthfuls of food. ‘‘By simply covering your compost and bins, removing pet food and covering pools, birdbaths and fish ponds, you can reduce the likelihood of wasps coming onto your property,’’ Ms Lindner said. Hayley Shanahan, who recently started a business specialising in tutus, was among those who received free advice from small business mentors involved in the state government program. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Sunbury poll misleading
As one of many who voted Yes to Sunbury out of Hume, thinking (as explained to me by the City of Hume and the Electoral Commission at the time) that this was just to gauge interest as no boundaries had been decided on, I was stunned to find out it had become – according to the former Liberal government – a binding referendum. Had I known what I know now, I would never have voted for it. If we don’t get back that part of the Melbourne Airport’s (originally part of the Shire of Bulla) rates permanently instead of just a 10-year annual “gift”, Sunbury-out-of-Hume will not be viable. That the information from the KPMG report was withheld and the public misled is a disgrace and we should at least be given another vote, this time knowing all the facts. Greg King, Sunbury

Residents can find out more about plans for a community park at Kyneton’s botanic gardens at a forum at the site from 1pm on Saturday, March 21. Macedon Ranges council staff will answer questions on design, construction and ongoing management. Foundation work at the former caravan park site will start in April. Plans are on display at the council offices.
Care centre takes a step forward
Construction of Kyneton District Health’s $7.4 million ambulatory care centre is on track, with the health service about to begin the first stage of its move to the new building. The centre will provide one point of access to health services, focusing on rehabilitation, mental health and primary care. KDH’s community nurses and primary health clinic, Kyneton Community Mental Health and Cobaw Community Health will eventually be based at the centre.
Still waiting for a third crossing
[Call to fix Sunbury roundabout ‘deathtrap’, Star Weekly Weekly, February 24]. We have lived in Sunbury for 18 years and this roundabout has only got worse. There were traffic lights on this intersection more than 25 years ago. They’ve been talking about a third crossing for all the years we have lived here but, as usual, the ball gets passed from Hume council to VicRoads. Herecomes the SunFest Pupils from Killara Primary School, who won the battle of the school choirs trophy at last year’s SunFest, have no plans to ‘‘let it go’’. Teacher Kelly Brogan says many members of last year’s champion choir will return to the stage to sing the song from Disney’s Frozen and an ABBA medley. This year’s festival, at the Village Green from 10am on Saturday and Sunday, will include live entertainment, a battle of the bands, a market and charity walk/run raising money for the SES, 1st Sunbury Scouts and the Leukaemia Foundation. The town’s only public fireworks display will start about 9.15pm on Saturday. Stage entertainment co-ordinator Graham Hanley-Smith says Saturday’s traditional street parade, along Evans, Harker and O’Shannassy streets, will be another highlight, with floats
celebrating local emergency services, schools, community groups and businesses. ‘‘It’s a fantastic community event. The streets are always lined with people,’’ he says. Memorabilia from Sunbury’s rock festivals of the 1970s will also be displayed. ‘‘There’ll be photos, posters and other items,’’ Mr Hanley-Smith says. Community-minded residents are being urged to join the SunFest committee, as several current members have indicated this year’s event will be their last. But the working-class lunch has become a bit fancy.
Romantic ideas and marketing tools aside, the ploughman’s lunch has been a much-loved lunch or supper for generations. It continues to instil comfort and familiarity and sits well with a good beer or cider.
During its ’60s renaissance, the ploughman’s lunch included readily available Branston pickle and jarred pickled vegetables commercially produced by English company Crosse & Blackwell.
The phrase ‘ploughman’s lunch’ was promoted by the British Milk Marketing Board in the 1960s as part of a campaign to promote the sale of cheese, especially in pubs.
Now it’s popularity is extending into inner-city pubs and cafes, where ploughman’s lunches consist of great cheddars, quality cold meats and sharp pickles.
There’s one main ingredient that’s vital to make a perfect ploughmans lunch – generosity. Each piece of cheese, bread or accompaniment must be large and chunky.
After lunch stroll around the Art Gallery of works by Regional Artists, watch the regular Social Cricket and graze through the extensive range of Trophy winning Sparkling and Still wines.
But the concept of this particular combination of ingredients is much older, originally coming about in Britain in the 1800s when wives packed lunches for their ploughmen husbands
Like any dish, the ploughman’s lunch is open to interpretation, but its origins lie in authentic, crumbly English cheddar and appropriately delicious accompaniments – think ham, salad
Perhaps this explains why rationing and World War II got in the way of our enjoyment of this unique English dish and we needed the MMB to remind us how good it always was.

SPORT Burkett underlines his class By Liam Twomey Romsey’s player-coach Chris Burkett confirmed his status as one of the Gisborne District Cricket Association’s top-line all-rounders in the final round of the season. In what has been a tough year for his side, Burkett has been outstanding with the bat, hitting 634 runs at an average of 57.6. While a back injury has limited his ability to bowl, he wasn’t leaving anything out on the park for his final match last week, taking 5-39 from 21 overs. That lifted his season tally to 15 wickets. Romsey president Michael Richardson was full of praise for Burkett. “I think he’s been remarkable,” he said. “He’s very patient with his batting and is hard to get out, which allows him to score so many runs.
“Chris has a bit of trouble with his back so he hasn’t bowled as much, but on the weekend, because it was the last game, he bowled and took five wickets from 20 overs. “He’s a really good leader and is learning to coach well and learning to teach well. A lot of the guys are really improving under him.” While out of finals contention since the Christmas break, Romsey has improved this GDCA season, winning one more game than last year to finish seventh on the ladder. “We think we are a bowler off and we’d like an opening bat,” he said. “We’ll keep trying to develop our own and, hopefully, that works out well for us.” The club also finished its campaign in style, getting the better of Wallan for the second time this season. Richardson labelled the club’s win against finals-bound Woodend in round 11 and the
emergence of spin bowler Paul Wilkinson as highlights of the season. “Paul’s been great to watch,” he said. “He was playing F-grade this time last year. I reckon he has taken 25 wickets; he’s really taking some great steps.” While the first XI missed a place in the top four, Romsey’s second and third sides have both qualified for finals, in D and F grade respectively. Richardson is confident the young players from those teams will help Romsey’s first XI climb the ladder. The club’s under-16s are also on top of the ladder.

Injury tips star into coaching
A three-wicket haul from Sunbury United’s James Hughes helped lift his side to victory against Bacchus Marsh in the Gisborne District Cricket Association on Saturday. After the Bulls were set 180 for victory, Hughes and fellow opening bowler Peter Jaeger were outstanding, taking six wickets between them. Despite a late fight back from Bacchus Marsh, the United bowlers were always in control, eventually getting their team home with 33 runs to spare. Sunbury United takes on Riddell in the opening round of the McIntyre Cup finals this weekend. The other semi-final will be between Woodend and Sunbury.

Hughes a clever boy then?
Lauren Close is getting a different view of pre-season training this year. The Australian Netball League star would usually be tearing up the court with her Riddell teammates at this time of the year, but a knee injury has forced her to the sidelines. It hasn’t kept Close out of the action. She has taken on the role of head coach at Riddell in place of Eliza Allen, who stood down at the end of last season. “It’s been a bit of a challenge sitting on the sidelines,” Close said. “I’d obviously rather be on the court. It’s been great to be coaching, though, and I’m really enjoying it.” Close is taking over a Riddell team that narrowly missed out on a premiership last year. The Bombers finished the home-andaway season six points clear on top of the ladder and were the clear favourites heading into finals. But a poor showing against Melton Centrals in the grand final cost the club the ultimate reward. With so much going right last season, Close doesn’t feel the need to mix things up too much. “Obviously our season was great; we just didn’t turn up to play in the grand final. “There isn’t much you can change about that. We had a really good lead-up to the grand final, but Melton came and played to win.” Of her own future, Close says she isn’t going to rush her recovery and wants to make sure she’s 100 per cent fit before returning to the court for a competitive match. She has already been able to resume light training. “It’s been a bit of a challenge sitting on the sidelines,” she said, “but the injury is going well. “I’m back to doing court work, which is nice. It’s still uncontested court work, but I’m getting there. “Whenever it heals it heals. I don’t really want to rush back and risk doing it again or anything like that. “Sitting on the sidelines for this long has been enough for me.” Liam Twomey

Sunbury seizes a finals berth By Liam Twomey Sunbury opening bowler Jason McGann led his side to its most important win of the Gisborne District Cricket Association season on Saturday. Sunbury defeated Gisborne by 82 runs to grab fourth spot on the McIntyre Cup ladder and secure a finals berth. Having posted 242 with the bat on day one, Sunbury returned to Clarke Oval in the box seat. With new ball in hand, McGann propelled his side into an even greater position of ascendency, taking 3-53 from his 20 overs. He received good support from Heath Boffey and Jack Landt, who each took two wickets and helped leave the Gisborne run chase in tatters. Gisborne was eventually dismissed for 160 in the 70th over. Sunbury secretary Marty Kelders was impressed with the evenness of his side’s performance. “We were pretty nervous going into the match but we are very happy with the result,” he said. “It was a good, even bowling performance in the end and we are delighted to have been in the finals three years in a row now. “The message for the bowlers was just to bowl consistent lines. If you look at the scoresheet, the wickets were evenly spread and it was a good team performance.” McGann’s three-wicket haul takes his season tally to 42 at an average of just 11.2. matches. “Jason really leads from the front and brings the other guys with him,” Kelders said. “He is the driving force behind the bowling attack. That is his leadership. It is all done out on the ground and the other guys respond to that.” Sunbury will take on Woodend in an elimination semi-final this weekend. The two sides met twice during the home-and-away season, with Woodend taking the points in round three. A draw was the outcome in round 13. “Woodend has really firmed as the competition favourites,” Kelders said. “They are definitely going to go into finals as favourites to win the flag and our guys know their backs are against the wall. “It is a two-horse race and if the guys can perform well on the first day, anything can really happen. “Coming from one win out of six games early in the season, to make the finals is a fantastic effort from this group.” Woodend claimed top spot with a final-round victory against Riddell. After making 299 on day one, Woodend restricted Riddell to 155. After slipping to second, Riddell will take on third-placed Sunbury United in the other semi-final.

Sunbury seeks that extra quality By Liam Twomey Recruiting bowlers can be a tricky business, as Sunbury Bowling Club is finding out. The club has made the past three division 2 grand finals but has come up short each time, the most recent a 77-68 loss to Altona Sports last month. Sunbury committee member David Glennon knows his club needs to add one or two bowlers with division 1 experience to help it take the next step, but they aren’t always easy to find. “Although we’re always very competitive and will continue to be so, we just need an extra bit of quality to get us over the line,” Glennon said. “If we did get to division 1 we would, hopefully, pick up one or two more recruits. Being in division 1 is a good lure for a lot of people to come over. In division 2, we find it a little difficult to recruit those A-graders.” Despite missing out on promotion, there are still plenty of positives to come out of the season for Sunbury.
Four of the club’s five sides made finals, with its division eight team earning promotion. Sunbury got the better of Maribyrnong Park in finals to secure the jump. Glennon says the club has done a great job adapting this year, and he highlights multiple wins on synthetic surfaces and achieving greater depth as the reasons for the success. “There’s always competition for places,” he said. “We had people come from the second side to the top side, and vice-versa. “There’s competition each week and the selectors have their work cut out just trying to find the right balance.” Glennon is also full of praise for division 2 players Mark and Elise Cowan. The father-daughter combination both skippered throughout the season, winning 28 games between them. “They both had fantastic years. Their rinks have been very good all season,” Glennon said. Sunbury United wasn’t messing about in its third-round FFA Cup match last week, smashing Whitehorse United 7-1 at Langama Park. Sunbury United started the game in emphatic fashion, scoring five first half-goals in the first 45 minutes. Despite Whitehorse delivering a better second-half performance, Sunbury United remained on top, adding another two goals to its tally to complete the victory. Sunbury United progresses to round four and an encounter with Monbulk Rangers SC. In other round-three FFA Cup games, Melton defeated Keilor 1-0, Sydenham Park smashed Old Melburnians 6-0 and Westgate was far too strong for old Hampton Park United, winning 5-1.

Players rush in as Tigers earn theirstripes Sunbury United Tigers have become the destination club of the Victorian Rugby League. Players are arriving from interstate and across the Tasman this off-season to join the club in its quest for a premiership three-peat. Back-to-back titles have put the Tigers on the map and there’s the added bonus of the club’s affiliation with Melbourne Storm providing a clearer pathway to the professional game. Tigers president Julian Keddy told Star Weekly a number of players from last year’s squad would not return for the title defence, but the new faces should offset the losses. “We’ve lost a couple of players, but we have a whole heap of new players in as well,” he said. “We’ve got some from New Zealand, some from Queensland and New South Wales; they’ve signed from all over the place. “If they’re moving down to Victoria, they
want to play for Sunbury. Success breeds success, I suppose.” The Tigers will be coached by Jamie Blackwood this season. He will replace Keddy, who stepped down from the role after leading the club to two premierships. Blackwood was promoted from within after working as Keddy’s assistant for both premiership seasons. The coaching styles of the two are contrasting, so the players can have a new lease of life under the new man in charge. “He’ll bring them a bit more direction and a lot more guidance,” Keddy said. “I sort of gave them a bit more freedom, but he’s a bit more strategic than I was. Instead of me yelling at them, it will give them something different. I get sick of saying the same stuff, too. He has a lot of experience from up in Queensland. He’s played for 20 years so
there’s more than enough experience there.” Brad Saunders held the premiership cup aloft as captain last season, but this year he’ll have a role on the sidelines, calling the shots as assistant coach. “I think he’ll hang up the boots and may play a bit of reserve grade if needed,” Keddy said. The Tigers have re-signed Aaron Teroi, winner of last year’s club best and fairest. Teroi, a busy half-back, is hopeful of picking up more games with Melbourne Storm under-20s this season. “Hopefully, he’ll play games with them and not be coming back to us,” Keddy said. “If he does return, he’ll slot in nicely into the position he played last season when he was outstanding.” The VRL season begins on April 11. Former Calder Cannon TAC Cup player and Vic Metro captain Touk Miller looked at home in his new Gold Coast Suns football jumper on Saturday afternoon. Playing in his second NAB Cup match since being drafted in November, Miller had 13 disposals, five kicks and eight handballs against Greater Western Sydney. He also laid four tackles and kicked a goal. Miller’s performance wasn’t good enough to get his Suns teammates over the line, with Greater Sydney coming out on top 94-58. Gold Coast’s final NAB Cup hit-out will be against the Brisbane Lions next Friday.

Rupertswood confirmed its status as the team to beat heading into the Gisborne District Cricket Association B-grade finals. Rupertswood smashed Bacchus Marsh by 211 runs in the final round of the home-and-away season. Having made 7-284 on day one, the Rupertswood bowlers owned day two, dismissing the Bulls for 73. Joshua Powell was brilliant with the ball, taking 4-5 from eight overs. Rupertswood finished the home-and-away season 21 points clear on top of the B-grade ladder and will take on fourth-placed Diggers Rest Bulla in the opening round of finals.
