Music at the Churches will offer something a little softer and more traditional during this week’s Kyneton Music Festival. Organiser Henry Vyhnal (pictured) says this year’s free church program features two globally acclaimed musicians. Composer, harpist and singer Mary Doumany will take the stage at St Paul’s Anglican Church at 2pm on Saturday, while Irish singer-songwriter Roesy will perform at the Uniting Church at 1pm. Parents face fees stress By Matt Crossman More Sunbury parents are asking principals for fee relief as state schools struggle to make up for government funding shortfalls. Sunbury Primary School principal Sean Lawless called on both state and federal governments to stop asking schools to do more with less. ‘‘I get a bit tired of governments of both persuasions saying they will do more for schools and hospitals in the lead-up to elections, but afterwards they don’t follow through,’’ Mr Lawless said. The parents’ plea comes in the wake of a report into the true costs of public schooling,

released by the state’s auditor-general last week. The report found Victorian parents paid $310 million to schools in 2013, an average of $558 per student. This was almost $70 million more than they paid in 2009. Auditor-General John Doyle, who recommended a regular review of payment policies, said the amount asked of parents varied greatly from school to school. He also said the Education Department needed to improve how it estimated the funding required to meet school costs. ‘‘School principals have pointed to the inadequacy of school funding as the main reason for increasing parent payments,’’ he said. ‘‘While there is some evidence to support

this claim, the [department] has done little to find out what it actually costs to educate a child.’’ The report said parent payments had gone from being used to support state education to becoming essential. It found that, in addition to school payments, many parents were also expected to buy uniforms, gym clothes and other items. Victorian Council of Social Service chief executive Emma King said parents were paying more for schooling than in any other state. ‘‘The state government must act now to ensure all school students are able to participate in the opportunities afforded by a quality education,’’ she said.

Mr Lawless said the former Napthine government’s decision to scrap the education maintenance allowance had hurt many lowincome families. ‘‘Even though we are in a relatively well off area socio-economically, we had about 60 families who were in receipt of that funding.’’ Most schools have hardship provisions in place for families struggling to pay fees and levies. Mr Lawless said he had spoken to more parents seeking help than ever before. ‘‘The fact is, in Victoria, we receive about $1900 less per child than the national average.’’ Opposition education spokesman Nick Wakeling and leader Matthew Guy claim the Coalition spent record funding on schools.

The Western Water baby ‘‘I sorta need a hand here.’’ They are the words that greeted a Western Water worker who helped deliver a Sunbury couple’s baby outside the Merrimu filtration plant on February 6. Little Angus Fraser was safely delivered on the side of Diggers Rest-Coimadai Road shortly after his parents, Brooke and Ben, realised they weren’t going to make it to hospital. Mr Fraser, who had been working night shift in Ballarat, made a quick trip home to pick up his wife and head for Bacchus Marsh. ‘‘Her waters broke at Diggers Rest and I was

Authorities are warning the public to remain vigilant after figures revealed paramedics have been called to more than 70 cases of children locked in cars in Melbourne’s northern and western suburbs since the start of the year. Sunbury CFA leading firefighter Gary Andison said his brigade was often called to break car windows to free children locked inside. ‘‘Some have been by mistake,” he said. “There have been cases where kids have accidentally locked the car while their parent is putting something in the boot. ‘‘Then there are the ones where kids have been left in a car outside shops.’’ Mr Andison said the temperature inside a locked car could rocket quickly, even on relatively mild days. ‘‘Regardless of the temperature, it’s never a good idea to leave kids in cars on their own,’’ he said. Ambulance Victoria group manager Brett Drummond said paramedics were frustrated that some parents weren’t heeding the message. “People are still wanting to gamble with their children’s lives,” he said. Anyone leaving a child unattended in a car faces a $2165 fine or up to three months’ imprisonment. Hume police’s Acting Inspector Phil Nash urged the public to be vigilant. “The people doing this risk harm to their children,” he said.

Sunbury Road speed cut ‘cheap’ By Matt Crossman Motorists are again calling for a deadly road between Bulla and Melbourne Airport to be duplicated after VicRoads moved to reduce speeds by 20km/h. A new 80km/h limit on the 4.6-kilometre section of Sunbury Road between the Tullamarine Freeway and Wildwood Road will come into effect next Monday. But long-time Sunbury resident Hector Bugeja said reducing speed was a “cheap” solution to a problem that should have been

dealt with several years ago. ‘‘It’s become a major thoroughfare and I would have thought that they’d be investing in other measures by now,’’ Mr Bugeja said. ‘‘Planners have had their heads in the sand for a while. How low do they go? Do they then reduce it to 60km/h in a few years?’’ The undivided rural road, which is used by 26,000 vehicles a day, has a history of bad crashes. VicRoads figures show there were 12 casualty crashes, including one fatality and seven serious injuries, in the five years to last

June 30. Two people died in a crash involving three vehicles in July last year. Duplication of Sunbury Road by 2021 was high on a wishlist released by Hume council in the lead-up to last November’s state election. Sunbury-based councillor Ann Potter said that while she understood VicRoads’ approach, she was disappointed the duplication of the road had yet to be announced. ‘‘Obviously, it’s a massive project, but I hope that plans for the road to be duplicated are in the pipeline somewhere,’’ she said. VicRoads regional director Adam Maguire

said police and the council supported the decision to reduce speeds. He said the lower limit would give drivers more time to react to changing conditions. ‘‘Reducing the speed limit to 80km/h will improve safety by lowering the risk and severity of crashes,’’ Mr Maguire said. ‘‘The new limit will also make it easier for drivers to transition to the 60km/h speed zone on Sunbury Road west of Wildwood Road.’’ A VicRoads spokesman said there were no immediate plans to duplicate the road.

Liam’s gift from the art He’s had them just over a week, but a wheelchair-friendly table and easel have completely changed the pre-school experience already for Riddells Creek’s Liam Koch. Liam, a member of the four-year-old group at Riddells Creek kindergarten, has Perthes’ disease, a hip joint disease that affects children. His mother, Camille, said there were many times last year when Liam sat in his wheelchair alone while other children ran around and played. After hearing of his plight, Riddells Creek Men’s Shed members Chris Butterly and Ron Marschall went to work on a table high enough to accommodate his chair. They also crafted an easel that connects to the table, allowing Liam to paint independently for the first time. Ms Koch said the portable table had been a godsend. ‘‘He’s been so excited. He’s been going

around asking all his friends to come and see his new table,” she said. ‘‘Before, he couldn’t paint and now he’s coming home with paintings every day.’’ The table was made durable enough for other kids to sit on so they can play with Liam, a boon for his social skills. ‘‘We’re incredibly grateful for all the time they put into it,’’ Ms Koch said. ‘‘It’s really improved his kindergarten experience.’’ Men’s Shed secretary Don Clark said Mr Butterly and Mr Marschall got great pleasure out of presenting Liam with his gifts. ‘‘Like all the community projects we complete at the shed, we get almost as much out of it as they do,’’ he said. Natural leaders on show Environmentalists in the Macedon Ranges aren’t just encouraging governments to show leadership on climate change – they’re taking it on themselves. Macedon Ranges Sustainability Group president Ralf Thesing has slashed fuel emissions after buying an electric car, while Martin de Haan used an environmentally friendly service for the funeral of his wife. Other group members have employed consultants to make their homes more energyefficient or have developed permaculture gardens. Ahead of the group’s Sustainable Living Festival on February 28, Mr Thesing said everybody has a part to play in the fight against climate change. He bought a Holden Volt in September after test-driving a car last year. ‘‘So far, there’s been only pluses. It’s very quiet; it has great acceleration,” he said. ‘‘It also has a range extender, so once you run out of battery a generator kicks in. You can get 450 kilometres out of it.’’ Mr de Haan employed Woodend’s Natural Grace funerals when his wife Dianne died of cancer in 2013. Natural Grace provided a cooling blanket, which allowed the family to keep Ms de Haan’s body at home for four days until it was placed in a biodegradable pine coffin with rope handles and taken to her funeral. Mr Thesing said the festival would show people how they could take a range of measures to reduce their carbon footprint. ‘‘A lot of little things can add up to serious action.’’ The festival is at the community garden behind the Woodend Community Hub, 47 Forest Street, from 10am. Ranges fan talks up study A regional study to identify significant central Victorian landscapes is a great chance to shine a light on the importance of the area’s natural character, according to Macedon Ranges Residents Association secretary Christine Pruneau. Urging residents to take part in the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning review, Ms Pruneau said people could make authorities ‘‘sit up and take notice’’. ‘‘This is our chance to say, hey, we love what we’ve got here,’’ she said. ‘‘It’s an opportunity to say again that the character of this area is valued and needs to be protected.’’ The study – to assess central Victoria’s most culturally significant, scenic or beautiful landscapes and features – will complement existing studies and growth plans and be used to guide planning. State and local government representatives, including Macedon Ranges council, have already made submissions. Mayor Jennifer Anderson encouraged residents to also have their say. ‘‘So many of us are passionate about this region, and I’d say it would not be difficult to pick out a photo or describe a feature of your favourite landscape or view in the shire and share it on the project website,’’ she said. Family aids VCE success Educational success depends on many things, not least of which is the support of loved ones. Paige Toner says she has been blessed with tremendous help from her family, including her mother who spent 90 minutes each day driving her between Altona and Sunbury Downs College. That and Ms Toner’s own commitment to excellence, contributed to her achieving a tertiary entrance rank of 97.1 and being named dux of the school. She has also had a media project selected for the National Gallery of Victoria’s prestigious VCE Top Arts exhibition, which starts in March. The 18-year-old from Altona was presented with the award at a ceremony last week. She was one of four Sunbury Downs students to break the 90-point mark. ‘‘We moved to Altona at the end of year 7. I was in the ACE [accelerated learning] program at Sunbury Downs, I liked the school and had already made friends, so I was lucky that my mum was happy to drive me every day.’’ Ms Toner, who attended Goonawarra Primary School, says her score came as a surprise. ‘‘I couldn’t believe it. After my exams, I had done all these calculations and my ‘holy grail’ score was 93.’’ Straight A-pluses in her year 12 subjects, including media, global politics, legal studies, maths and English, contributed to her outstanding result. Ms Toner says she managed to balance her study schedule with a healthy social life. ‘‘I was under the impression that to do really well you had to have a really strict timetable, but I didn’t do that.’’

MP Bernie Finn has urged Local Government Minister Natalie Hutchins to confirm an independent Sunbury council will come into existence on July 1. Western Metropolitan Liberal Mr Finn told State Parliament last week the new government had to honour ‘‘a resounding yes vote for Sunbury out of Hume”. ‘‘It wasn’t just the people in Sunbury. Right across Hume people voted for Sunbury to have a stand-alone council,’’ he said. ‘‘The former government respected the voice of the people and announced last year there would be a new council as of July 1 this year. Since the election … there has been silence.’’ As reported by Star Weekly Weekly, the Australian Services Union has launched a petition urging the government to allow a new, compulsory vote on whether Sunbury should break away from the municipality of Hume. Hume council has met Ms Hutchins several times to raise its concerns with the secession process. Mr Finn said people in Sunbury were worried about the campaign against an independent Sunbury. ‘‘They may be worried with good reason, given the government’s silence on this particular matter,’’ he said. Chairman of the trades By Matt Crossman Pheasant farmer, arborist, plumber, gasfitter and public servant – Kyneton’s Glen Rundell has turned his hand to many things. But it wasn’t until he dedicated himself to crafting Windsor-style chairs that he found his true calling. Six years later, the chairmaker and instructor is at the forefront of a movement designed to celebrate and protect trades threatened by the march of progress. Rundell and his wife, Lisa, are the organisers of a Lost Trades Fair, to be held at Kyneton racecourse on March 7 and 8. The first fair, held in March last year, attracted more than 7500 visitors who came to see coopers making wine barrels, luthiers crafting one-of-a-kind instruments and knifemakers folding steel blades. Rundell says the event taps into a growing appreciation of simplicity, craftmanship and uniqueness. ‘‘You certainly see it in lots of senses, through things like the slow food movement,’’ he says. Rundell believes more people are realising that mass-produced goods, while often cheap, lack the durability and enduring charm of those produced by our forefathers. ‘‘For centuries, properly trained workers have been able to produce the most exquisite furnishings by hand, and they’re better than what’s made today. ‘‘The first thing I ask people who come to my workshops is: to who are you going to hand ■ down what you create?’’ ■Rundell’s workshop is regularly ■■ filled ■ ■ people eager to gain an insight into his with particular trade. Cat owners are being urged to desex, microchip and register their pets to help limit the number of unwanted litters in the Macedon Ranges. The council’s community safety manager, Anne-Marie Lindner, said 90 per cent of cat owners \ desexed their pets, but the other 10 per cent\\ created a stray cat population that could grow at 50 per cent a year.

A bumper cash drive Classic car enthusiasts can relive their youth while raising money for community projects at a show in Sunbury later this month. Dozens of cars and motorbikes will line up for the inaugural North West Show and Shine. It is being organised by Sunbury Rotary Club whose event co-ordinator Mario Spiteri says there will be all manner of rare and unique vehicles on display, but they will all have one thing in common: metal bumpers. ‘‘It’s restricted to entries from the early ’80s and older,’’ he says. ‘‘A few of us guys at

the Rotary Club have old cars, so we thought it was a great opportunity to use them as a vehicle to raise money for projects around town, including the Sunbury Community Kitchen.’’ Entries will be accepted on the day and cost $20 for cars and $10 for motorbikes. By Tara Murray Gisborne is putting in the hard yards on the training track as it looks ahead to the Bendigo Football League season. The players have been training three times a week as they build up strength and fitness to match it with the top two sides. Bulldogs coach Rod Sharp says it’s been a positive pre-season so far. “We had five weeks of training before Christmas and then came back on January 19,” he said. “We’re slowly starting to build momentum and we had a training camp for the netballers and footballers at Phillip Island on the weekend. “There was a similar thing last year, which worked well. It’s more a bonding sort of camp and about people getting to know each other.” Most of the side is back again, with the club not having signed recruits at this stage. “We’ve had conversations with people but we don’t have the money,” Sharp said. “Instead we want to get the best from what we have and look at being a competitive team. “If we drop away from that, people may see us being sixth or seventh-best.” Matthew Knox, who played two games with Gisborne last year, looks likely to spend more time on the park this season and will add to a young forward line. “He’s a key forward who can kick 60-70 goals in a season,” Sharp said. He said the team may have taken competitors by surprise with a third finish last season but believes “the best football is ahead for the boys”. “Our best and fairest winner, Tim Walsh, is

New coach Steve Grey said his focus was ensuring better fitness. “I’ve got Scar [a boxer who has also appeared on the TV show Gladiators] as my personal trainer and he’s doing strength and conditioning with the boys,” Grey said. “We need to get stronger and that will help with the mental side . . . hopefully we’ll run out games a lot better. That’s my number one aim, to be more competitive for the whole game, not just the first half.” Macedon’s Ash Fleming leads the club’s recruits. “We have 20 new faces, some of them with experience,” Grey said. “The recruits’ work rate and fitness base is a bit stronger [than what we have] and will teach the others.” The club has also seen an increase of players in its under-18 squad. “We have 24-26 under-18s this year . . . last year we had 16-18,” Grey said. Collapse has Riddell in strife By Tara Murray Riddell’s up-and-down form over the second half of the season has continued, with the ladder leaders conceding first innings points to Bacchus Marsh in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s McIntyre Cup. Electing to bat, Riddell found itself in trouble and was bowled out for 92 in the day’s 44th over. Bacchus Marsh, still with a mathematical chance of making finals, got its chase off to a bad start, losing the experienced Peter Lalor for a duck. From there, it was all Bacchus Marsh, which finished day one at 2-108.

Woodend could jump to the top of the ladder if it can overcome Sunbury. After a delayed start to the match due to rain, Woodend finished day one at 4-112. Openers Adam Johnstone and Daniel Eastley got their team off to a flier, reaching 91 without loss. Sunbury’s bowlers then hit back, taking 4-21, including the wicket of Johnstone for 64. Steve Treweek took two of the wickets as Sunbury tried to keep its finals hopes alive. As Sunbury’s main competition for fourth spot, Gisborne is doing everything right to secure that finals place.

Playing the bottom-placed Wallan, the Dragons will start day two in the box seat to take the win. Wallan, which has improved with the bat in recent weeks, was bowled out for 139 and the Dragons will resume at 1-44. Sunbury United is also well placed against Romsey. Batting first, United finished day one on 9-227. Ryan Billinghurst continued his good form with the bat, making 59. Meanwhile in B-grade, Macedon has a tough fight on its hands to stay in fourth spot. Playing St Anthonys, which is fifth on the same amount of points, Macedon will need

to chase down 300 or more for the second time this season to keep its top-four spot. Macedon was left to rue its decision to send St Anthonys in as it made 9-300. Diggers Rest Bulla looks set to seal its finals spot after its win against Sunbury United. Looking to finish second on the ladder, Diggers Rest Bulla is 1-69, needing 102 for first innings points. East Sunbury is also looking to finish second on the ladder and needs 248 for victory against Bacchus Marsh. Rupertswood’s fine form continued as it racked up 9-286 against Ashfield.

Tigers choose new coach Sunbury Tigers Rugby Club has turned to a familiar face as it looks to win three premierships in a row. With premiership coach Julian Keddy stepping down, the club has named last year’s assistant coach, James Blackwood, to take over. Keddy, who remains president of the club, said Blackwood’s familiarity with the Tigers was a massive upside. “James has been assistant to me, but he and his partner have just had a baby and he wasn’t sure whether he would have the time for the role,” he said. “He discussed it with his partner and decided to put up his hand. We had a couple of options, including a former NRL player, but decided to go with James.” Keddy said it would be an easy transition. “All the players know him and he knows what’s expected around the club. “Brad Sanders, who was captain last year and assistant coach this season, has been taking training. James used to take training when I wasn’t available, so he knows what’s going on. “I’d hope he will change things up a little to suit his coaching. We have already implemented the ideas he had before. I don’t think there will be too many changes, though.” Tara Murray

Sunbury women ready to roar Sunbury Lions Women’s Football Club is looking to put an uncertain pre-season behind it and get back on the park in the Victorian Women’s Football League. After struggling for numbers on and off field, it looked for a time as if the club, which has won premierships in both senior and youth competitions, would fold. But a determined few made sure this wouldn’t occur and the club is now set to field senior, youth and under-12 sides. The club’s Mel Ramadan said the club was happy to put the uncertainty behind. “The season is definitely going ahead and the local council [Hume] has jumped on board helping with promotional events and getting the word out there,” she said, “We’ll have a junior side, senior side and youth girls side.

“The junior side is an under-12 team, which is a positive for us. “One of the youth girls wanted to set it up as a project for her and we’re seeing what interest there is.” Currently there are at least 20 women keen to play in the senior side and 12-15 in the youth side. “We’re looking for players for both teams,” Ramadan said. “We’re only just starting to get the word out now that we’ll be playing again. “In the women’s competition, we’re likely to be playing in a lower division than we have been. “That means you can have a bit more fun, which might help get more players on board. “As we rebuild, it’s about getting people on

board in the Sunbury community and for them to enjoy it and get fit.” The club is still looking for a coach after Lisa Vandenhurk stood down at the end of last season because of work commitments. “We have the management side of things under control and we have potential trainers,” Ramadan said. “But we’re still looking for people to help out.” The club is in negotiations about becoming affiliated to Sunbury Lions men’s club, with the WFL representing the women in the talks. “We’re not 100 per cent sure what is happening with that yet,” Ramadan said. Sunbury softball club’s under-15 boys team came back from the recent state championships with new-found confidence and new friends. The boys competed at the Mill Park tournament last month, when they won one of six games across the weekend. Coach Shannon Maybury said, despite the results, it was brilliant experience for the boys. “Only two of them had competed before and most of them were only 12-13, so they are a couple of years younger than the other sides. “They were rapt to get the win after being so close in a couple of other games.” Maybury said the boys were keen to use their new-found skills back at Sunbury. “The biggest thing they learnt was seeing the level kids a couple of years older are at and how far off they are from playing at that level. “They also have come back to Sunbury as good mates,” he said.

Heat’s on for bowlers By Tara Murray Lancefield and Romsey will fight it out for the final spot in the Central Highlands Bowls division finals, with nine points separating the two teams. Lancefield is in the box seat to finish in the top four despite losing to Woodend on Saturday. Woodend, which can still finish on top of the ladder, beat Lancefield 13(113)-2(73). The two points puts Lancefield in fourth spot on 138, having been boosted by Romsey’s failure to take any points against Kyneton Golf. Golf, now on top of the ladder 12 points clear of Woodend, dominated: 18(126)-0(74). Kyneton assured its finals spot with a win against Trentham, 18(138)-0(63). In the other match, Bacchus Marsh defeated Gisborne, 14(98)-4(84). Sunbury is assured a top-two finish in Bowls Metropolitan Pennant division 2, section 1 after a hard-fought win against Werribee (2). Sunbury won 15(86)-3(70), with Mark and Elise Cowan the stand-outs again. Elise won her rink 24-12, while Mark won his 27-19, after being down by 10 shots earlier in the rink. The comeback by Mark’s rink was on the back of winning all eight shots in one end, which isn’t a common occurrence. Eric Taylor, for a second successive week, drew his rink, this time 14-14, while Carla Odgers lost hers 25-21. Sunbury sits on top of the ladder, five points clear of Altona Sports entering the final round. Sunbury will host the Victorian versus South Australia test series this week, starting Wednesday, Odgers and Elise Cowan are both members of the Victorian team.

Three consecutive birdies weren’t enough to grab a win for Mal Mottram in the second round of the Romsey Golf Club’s Summer Cup. The golfers were met by soft, rain-affected greens perfect for well-placed drives. Mottram made his run on the 11th, 12th and 13th and nearly added a fourth birdie on the 14th, but it wasn’t enough for the stableford win, which went to Michael McCarton.

Softball

The Wildcats had a massive win on Saturday in the Sunbury Softball Association women’s competition, defeating the Jackson Panthers 16-5. The Pink Panthers won 7-6 in a close one over the Knights. In the men’s competition, the Knights defeated the Sharks 25-13 and the Panthers defeated Goonawarriors 17-8.

Kyneton District won it’s qualifying round FFA Cup’s Victorian section on Saturday, beating Light United 3-0. In the preliminary rounds, Kyneton will play Eltham Redbacks.
