By Matt Crossman The duplication of Sunbury Road, a longawaited Bulla bypass and upgrades to the Sunbury railway station carpark are among items on a state election wishlist released by Hume council. Mayor Casey Nunn said the introduction of traffic lights at Sunbury’s Gap Road and Horne Street was also among 10 priority projects identified by the council in the lead-up to the November 29 poll. ‘‘Our community is experiencing rapid growth and for this to be sustainable we need state and federal governments to continue to invest in key projects for our city,’’ she said. The council wants Sunbury Road between Bulla and Melbourne Airport duplicated by 2021 to address a high incidence of serious crashes and cater for population growth in Sunbury. The existing road, used by about 20,000 vehicles a day, is an undivided rural road that is predominantly one lane in each direction. The proposed bypass would relieve pressure on Sunbury-Bulla Road and improve connections between Sunbury and employment centres in the city’s northern growth corridor. A lack of car spaces at Sunbury’s railway station is forcing commuters to park at nearby shopping centres. The station has 550 spaces. The council said the shortage would be magnified in the next few years, with Sunbury’s population expected to increase

Traffic upgrades on the wishlist from 36,789 in 2014 to 73,463 in 2036. Former Bulla councillor and long-time Sunbury resident Hector Bugeja said urgent action was needed. ‘‘You see cars overflowing into the streets around the station very early in the morning,’’ he said. The intersection of Gap Road and Horne Street, which is serviced by a small roundabout, is a traffic hotspot, with a nearby railway level crossing on Station Street causing cars to bank up and block the roundabout.

Sunbury Residents Association president Bernie O’Farrell said infrastructure and services were not keeping up with population growth. ‘‘I’d certainly agree all those things require improvement,’’ he said. ‘‘But I think it’s curious to put out a wishlist now … these are things the council should have been pushing more for in the past few years.’’ Cr Nunn hopes some election commitments will be forthcoming throughout Hume. “It shouldn’t matter what margin there is in the seat.” She urged residents to have their say by completing an online survey. Basil comes to lunch A sculpture made of recycled materials will be unveiled at a community tea party and lunch in Sunbury on Tuesday, November 11. The sculpture, named Basil, was created by staff and clients of Cohealth and Sunbury Community Health Centre. The party will include activities such as pot-planting and a poetry-reading in a new community garden. Project organisers will be on hand to hear ideas about how people would like the garden to be used. The garden and art project are part of efforts to highlight the benefits of outdoor activities for health and wellness. Cohealth provides community health and support services across Melbourne’s western and northern suburbs. Broadford will remain in the Riddell District Football Netball League after failing to move to the Kyabram District league. In a statement on its website, the club said: “We can announce the Broadford Football Netball Club was unable to come to an agreement with both the KDFNL and AFL Victoria. Throughout the period we have continued to attend all RDFNL meetings, upholding our affiliation obligations within the RDFNL. The Broadford Football Netball Club will remain affiliated in the RDFNL in 2015.”
By Tara Murray Long hours of training have paid off for Macedon’s Henry Wilson, who has worked out at the Gisborne Mixed Martial Arts centre over the past eight years. Henry’s first competition qualified him for the Victorian Martial Arts Championships on October 12 where he won two state titles in the under-16 category and finished with three seconds in the under-18 competitions. The youngster will now compete at the national titles next month. His father Mick Wilson said Henry didn’t know what to expect when he started competing. “He was surprised by the results,” Mick said. “It’s reward for the amount of training he has done. You do not know how good you are until you compete. “It has really become part of his life. The last year and a half when the dojo moved location, he has really picked up his training. He is training five nights a week.” Mick said the national championships next month would further test Henry. “He is the type of kid who’ll take one step at a time. He is only young and has a lot to learn. “He will compete in everything in the under-16 age group. Henry started martial arts when he was six. “He was in grade one and there was a demonstration at school. All of his friends were interested, so they joined the club,” Mick said. “He is the only one still going.” Mick said Henry would like to continue martial arts into the future. “He is still young and yet to decide where he would like to go. Ideally, he would like to combine martial arts with his acting, which he also loves, down the track.”
