YOUR GUIDE TO THE WOMEN’S WORLD CUP

By Tara Murray Among the millions who will be on the edge of their seats during the FIFA Women’s World Cup will be the growing number of females who are joyfully tackling soccer in every aspect.
Psarianos said Calder United, which is based in Keilor Park, had been in discussions with Brimbank council and Football Victoria about the proposal.
Soccer participation rates are through the roof, with Melbourne’s north-west heavily involved in that growth.
This World Cup, in France, will represent Australia’s best chance of taking out the title to date.
National Premier League club Calder United fields the western suburbs’ top-ranked women’s side. The team has won a number of trophies in its four years. Club president Eric Psarianos said now was an exciting time to be involved with women’s football. “I see upside to everything that is happening and it’s nice to be a part of it,” he said. “We’ve got girls as young as eight through to 20, 22, who are very passionate about the game. “I’ve been involved with men’s senior football and seen how dire it can be. It’s nice to see everyone so positive.” Psarianos said the club had seen an increase of numbers trying out for its sides. The club had increased its program to include MiniRoos. He said female growth at the club mirrored what was unfolding on a bigger stage. “There’s a lot going on with the women’s game, not only in Australia,” he said. “You can see the affect in Victoria. The federation [Football Victoria] has been on the front foot and decided to build an elite training base.” One possible location for the base is Brimbank.

Not only will the Calder family be watching it in Keilor Park, some club people will be working at the event, while others are going over to watch. The club is hoping it will one day have its own representatives in the Matildas. Current Calder player Melindaj Barbieri is in the Young Matildas squad. Psarianos said the future is bright for women’s football in the country – and if Australia could win the hosting rights to the 2023 World Cup, the game would explode even further. He would love to see the Calder women’s side have a presence on the national stage. He said a number of the club’s players were on the radar of W-League clubs. “Our focus is on the younger girls,” he said. “We’ve got five juniors in our senior team and others coming through the next few years. It’s about the development of the girls. “We would like to work on a direct link with the W-League through partnerships or have some sort of national presence.”
This World Cup will represent the Australian’s best chance of taking out the title to date.
Psarianos said the club was looking at enhancing its facilities and further developing the wellness side of the club’s programs.

Dr Adam Mattsson and his team. Celebrating 10 years of Quality Dentistry in the West 5 BRIMBANK & NORTH WEST STAR WEEKLY \ JUNE 4, 2019
#FOOTBALLMADNATION
By Lance Jenkinson Australia will touch down in France for the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup next month with expectations of a best-ever finish. The Matildas have made six appearances at the World Cup finals since 1995, their best efforts coming in the quarter-finals. They have reached the last eight on the past three occasions – in 2007, 2011 and 2015. As the sixth-ranked nation heading to France, Australia will be eager to go much deeper – perhaps all the way to the final. And why not? The Matildas have proven in the past four years that their best is good enough to beat even the No.1-ranked US team. Australia will be a slight favourite to go beyond the group stage, but that is no foregone conclusion. The Matildas will have to get over proud football nations Brazil and Italy, as well as Jamaica. In a group with three nations ranked in the top 15, one little slip up could prove disastrous.
The group stage Australia will kick-start its group stage campaign in a clash with the 15th-ranked Italy on June 9 at the Stade du Hainaut in Valenciennes. It will be the first time the two nations have squared off since 2014. On that day, the Matildas put five past the Italians before their defences were breached, eventually winning 5-2. The travelling Aussie fans will be hoping for more of the same. It will be Italy’s first World Cup finals match since 1999. The second group game for Australia is a date with Brazil at Stade de la Mosson in Montpellier on June 14. This will be an absolute doozy between two top 10-ranked nations.
6 BRIMBANK & NORTH WEST STAR WEEKLY \ JUNE 4, 2019
If all goes to form, it will be the deciding match to see which team tops the group as winners.
The 45-year-old has the big tournament experience the Matildas need to guide them to success.
The Australian and Brazilian teams are no strangers to one another, having faced off six times since the 2015 FIFA World Cup.
Star player
They even met in the group stage of the last World Cup, in Canada in 2015, when the Matildas were victorious 1-0 in the round of 16.
The Australian captain has been in tremendous form in this World Cup cycle and will be one of the stars of the show up front.
In the past six meetings between the two nations, Australia has won four and lost two. The Matildas’ current four-game winning streak against Brazil should give them confidence heading into this meeting. Australia’s final game of the group stage will be against 53rd-ranked Jamaica at Stade des Alpes in Grenoble on June 19. It will be the first time the Matildas have come up against Jamaica. After a third-placed finish at the CONCACAF Women’s Championship, Jamaica could provide some nuisance value, but will be the underdog in every game it plays.
The coach
In case you have been living under a rock, this has perhaps been the most unsettled position in the Australia set-up. When the group stage draw took place last December, Alen Stajcic was the coach of the Matildas. A month later, Stajcic was sacked and a seemingly smooth preparation was thrown into all sorts of chaos as the Matildas went on a search for a new coach. While Stajcic has since gone on to coach the Central Coast Mariners in the A-League, the Matildas have found a calm head through the appointment of Ante Milicic. Milicic, a Socceroos assistant coach at the 2014 and 2018 FIFA World Cups, took over the Matildas’ top job in February.
Super striker Sam Kerr needs no introduction.
Kerr was short-listed for FIFA’s women’s player of the year in 2018 while scoring in a record seven consecutive games for the Matildas. If the Matildas are to make some noise this tournament, Kerr will need to be on song.
Young and old The veteran of the Matildas squad is 34-year-old striker Lisa De Vanna, who has played 147 games, scored 47 goals and been part of three World Cup campaigns and two Olympics. Along with De Vanna, goalkeeper Lydia Williams, 31, and Clare Polkinghorne, 30, will be taking part in their fourth World Cups. The rookie of the squad is teenage sensation Mary Fowler, who has played four internationals. At 16, Fowler would be the youngest player to represent the Matildas on the World Cup stage if she gets time on the field.
The Matildas squad Sam Kerr (captain), Steph Catley (vice-captain), Lydia Williams (goalkeeper), Mackenzie Arnold (goalkeeper), Teagan Micah (goalkeeper), Gema Simon, Aivi Luik, Clare Polkinghorne, Laura Alleway, Chloe Logarzo, Elise Kellond-Knight, Caitlin Foord, Emily van Egmond, Lisa de Vanna, Tameka Yallop, Alanna Kennedy, Emily Gielnik, Hayley Raso, Mary Fowler, Katrina Gorry, Ellie Carpenter, Amy Harrison, Teigen Allen.
