Council CEO blow, again Whittlesea council is again searching for someone to fill the city’s top job, after acting chief executive Kelvin Spiller announced he would depart the council at the end of the month. Mr Spiller was appointed as acting chief executive on November 23 – three days after former chief executive Simon Overland announced he was taking indefinite leave from the council, citing concerns about his health and safety. The council sacked Mr Overland on

December 10. He was the third chief executive to be shown the door at Whittlesea since April 2016. The council and mayor Emilia Lisa Sterjova issued separate statements announcing Mr Spiller’s departure. A statement from the council stated Mr Spiller had advised he would finish in his role on February 28 due to “personal and other business commitments from March”. In her statement, Cr Sterjova said Mr Spiller had been “highly effective” in keeping the organisation focused on delivering services to the community since his appointment. Cr

Sterjova said the council would appoint an acting chief executive “soon”. Cr Lawrie Cox said Mr Spiller’s decision to leave the council was indicative of the “chaos” at the council. “He is effectively the fourth CEO [to go],” he said. Cr Cox questioned why Mr Spiller didn’t mention his other commitments when he was appointed. He has called for the council to either reinstate Mr Overland or look internally for Mr Spiller’s replacement, as has been the case in the past. Cr Cox attempted to raise a notice of motion at last week’s council meeting calling for Mr

Overland to be reinstated by was told the council could not reinstate him. It comes as Mr Spiller revealed the council has spent $93,000 on external lawyers and public relations consultants since Mr Overland’s sacking. Mr Spiller told last week’s council meeting he had received three accounts totalling $93,000, of which $24,000 was attributable to communications agency, The Civic Group. Cr Cox said he opposed money being spent on external lawyers and public relations firms when the council had solicitors on retainer and a communications department.

Unruly parties rile residents By Laura Michell A South Morang resident living opposite the Riverside Community Activity Centre has called for Whittlesea council to ban the centre from hosting teenage parties. Lindsay Taggert wants the council to introduce age restrictions on parties following three teenage parties at the centre in the past six months, which he says became out of control. He said police were called to two of the

parties, the most recent of which took place on January 18 and resulted in a fight in the street. “It seemed like there were more than 250 people there. I stepped out the front [of my house] and it was like I had stepped into a war zone. There were so many cop cars and people in the street, Mr Taggert said. “It was shocking. The police had both ends of the street blocked off. It was very unruly. Mr Taggert said the centre only began hosting teenage birthday parties recently and is

urging the council to put a stop to them. “When there are no teenage parties there, everything is good, he said. “The people in the street are afraid there will be a fight every Saturday night. I have been in the street for 20 years and the last six months have been the worst. I think we have had enough. Whittlesea council advocacy, communications and customer experience manager Dean Jenkins said council was aware of residents’ concerns about the January 18

incident. “While the City of Whittlesea does not discriminate against ages of parties held at the centres, we do ensure all hirers are aware of the terms and conditions and are held to account of these requirements, he said. “We are constantly reviewing our operating procedures and requirements and will look at ways we can further minimise any disruption to local residents, whilst balancing the need for community meeting spaces at any of our community activity centres.

Student has become the master A with a passion for teaching students a second language has been named as an unsung hero. Italian teacher Rosa Sfameni recently received an Unsung Hero Award from educational journal Education HQ. The award recognised Ms Sfameni’s dedication to helping students to learn to speak Italian and her work organising the school’s first study tour to Italy later this year. Ms Sfameni, who has been teaching Italian at Hume Anglican Grammar for two years, said her experiences learning a second language had

shaped her passion for teaching. “My passion grew out of the challenge to master learning a second language and the great intrinsic reward that comes with being able to communicate with others in another language, she said. “I often remind students that I was once in their position as a second language learner and that anything is possible with the appropriate amount of time and effort. “There is nothing I love more than hearing students speak Italian outside the classroom

with peers and other teachers.â€? Ms Sfameni said the study tour to Italy in September was aimed at broadening students’ horizons and inspiring them to continue studying Italian. “From food to architecture and history, the country has so much to offer ‌ I am very excited to experience with students the beauty of Italy. For many, this will be their first time travelling overseas,â€? she said. Laura Michell

Whittlesea mayor Emilia Lisa Sterjova has been indefinitely expelled from the Labor Party. Cr Lawrie Cox, who is a Labor member, said the party voted to expel Cr Sterjova on January 23. The decision stems from Cr Sterjova’s election as Whittlesea mayor on November 7. Cr Cox said prior to the mayoral election, the Labor caucus met to determine which councillor it would support. Star Weekly understands the caucus decided to back Cr Tom Joseph. Cr Cox said Cr Sterjova participated in the caucus decision and voted to back another councillor, before changing her mind and voting for herself to become mayor. Cr Sterjova was nominated for the position of mayor by Cr Norm Kelly. Cr Cox said Cr Sterjova’s actions broke Labor Party rules. “She participated and voted in caucus in accordance with the rules of the party and broke that caucus decision and did it for self-promotion,â€? he said. “It is all about being a team player ‌ if you don’t deliver in regards to the rules, you leave ‌ she broke the rules.â€? Cr Cox said he was “quite comfortableâ€? with the party’s decision, adding it was the most united he had seen the party in 47 years. “[Cr Sterjova] hasn’t shown any principles that the Labor Party upholds in relation to good governance in local government,â€? he said. A Labor spokesperson said the party did not comment on internal matters. Cr Sterjova was contacted for comment. Laura Michell

Green light for food recycling By Laura Michell Whittlesea residents will be given the chance to recycle their food waste from next financial year. Councillors last week voted to roll-out a municipal-wide food organics and garden organics (FOGO) recycling program from 2020-21. Residents will need to opt-in to the program. The Whittlesea-wide program follows a three-month food waste recycling trial by 1600 households with garden bins.

A report to last week’s council meeting stated the trial was a success, with food waste accounting for 32 per cent of the waste placed in garbage bins at participating houses, down from 53 per cent before the trial. Food waste also accounted for one-third of the waste in garden bins at the end of the trial, up from 0.1 per cent before the trial began. Household participating in the program will be provided with a caddy and liners and be educated on the types of food waste they can place in their garden bins. Cr Sam Alessi said the FOGO program

‘‘

We need to look seriously at the way we handle our - Sam Alessi waste

’’

would help reduce the amount of waste going to landfill. “This is a fantastic start in trying to divert some of our refuse away from landfill,” he said. “I hope that eventually it will be done city-wide. “We need to look very seriously at the way

we handle our waste. We can’t keep on putting waste into landfill.” The food waste will be processed at Suez’s facility in Cooper Street, Epping. A report to council said while the Suez facility did not use industry best practices, processing food waste at Cooper Street was $1.5 million cheaper annually than using Cleanaway’s facility in Dandenong. “I do have an issue that the proposal is [to use] Cooper Street, but I understand it is a long way to go to the other side of town,” Cr Alessi said.

Call for enviro champs Hume residents who are passionate about the environment are being encouraged to sign up as an Enviro Champion. The council’s Enviro Champions training program kicks off on February 16, providing participants with 10 weeks of training to help them deliver a project to better the community. Mayor Carly Moore said the program has become very popular and has helped many projects become a reality. “If you are a Hume resident who is passionate about the environment and wishes to make a difference in your local community, joining Enviro Champions is an ideal way for you to realise your goals,” she said. “This program is an opportunity for people to meet to support, protect and strengthen the environment and the community through the training and projects they choose to pursue. “You are not required to have a specific project in mind to join. If you care about the

environment and want to make like-minded friends, you are a potential Enviro Champ.” Previous Enviro Champions projects have included a Hume seed library, online social media eco hub, making reusable produce bags and action on climate change. The training sessions will be held on Wednesdays from 6-8.30pm and participants can work alone or as part of a team to develop a project. The program also includes day-time field trips and an evening graduation. Details: www.hume.vic.gov.au/ envirochamps Laura Michell

Foot Pain or Heel Pain?

Foot pain is extremely common, affecting more than 80% of people at some point in their lives, with heel pain being the most common of all human foot complaints. Despite their frequency, these conditions are often mismanaged and incorrectly treated, leaving many sufferers spending time and money on treatments without long-term solutions or relief. But why are such common problems seemingly so hard to treat effectively? We asked Dr. David Kavanagh from Foot and Leg Pain Clinics, who have treated some of the worlds best athletes and are one of Australia’s leading foot, knee & leg pain experts. “Besides the fact that the foot is one of the bodies most complex structures and we are on them all the time, there are two major reasons foot pain and particularly heel pain treatment is often ineffective, especially long-term. Either only the symptoms are being addressed, and not the underlying cause, or the exact nature of the condition is not being identified or understood.” For example, most heel pain is incorrectly assumed to be an inflammatory condition but it is nearly always a result of nerve impingement or tissue degeneration. Tissue thickening is often mistaken for inflammation, contributing to incorrect diagnoses and treatment. This is a big problem because treating a degenerative condition with anti-inflammatory treatments can actually cause further tissue damage, making your condition worse.”

Carpark roo released

Scaffold collapse investigated

By Laura Michell A kangaroo found injured in the carpark of a Craigieburn shopping centre has been given a second chance at life. The kangaroo, who had a joey on board, was in the carpark of Craigieburn Central on December 28 when she was hit by two cars. A local vet rescued her from the centre and took her to Little Urchins Wildlife Sanctuary for treatment. Little Urchins Sanctuary carer Kat Agar-Teehan said the kangaroo, who has been named Heidi, had pelvic injuries, a broken nose, swelling to her head, grazes on her legs and concrete burns to the soles of her feet. She said Heidi was lucky to survive. “A lot [of kangaroos] don’t make being hit by one car because of internal damage. I’m surprised she didn’t have any internal damage but it is probably because she was in the carpark,” Ms Agar-Teehan said. “She was a very gentle girl when she came in. She just wanted me to sit with her.” Heidi spent five weeks in the care of the sanctuary before being released into nearby bush with a mob of kangaroos. “She has bonded very well with other pre-release kangaroos. It was nice to see that she has made a connection to them,” Ms Agar-Teehan said. “It is really nice to see her happy and she skips around out there.” Ms Agar-Teehan said the joey, named Elliot, was doing well, with Heidi proving to be a doting mum. Little Urchins Wildlife Sanctuary’s Paula Griggs urged drivers to slow down in areas where kangaroos are known to live. She also urged anyone who hits a wild animal to either take it to a wildlife carer for treatment or alert a rescue service to the animal’s location.

The collapse of a section of scaffolding at a Craigieburn building site, which injured five people, is being investigated by WorkSafe. The scaffolding on a three-storey residential development on Fortitude Drive collapsed on February 3. Emergency services were called to the site at 1.11pm following reports a person was trapped under scaffolding. Firefighters, the SES, Ambulance Victoria and police attended the scene. Part of the scaffolding fell on a vehicle parked near the site. An Ambulance Victoria spokesperson said five people were treated by paramedics. A man in his 20s was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital in a serious condition with upper body injuries. A man in his 50s was taken to the Alfred Hospital in a serious condition with lower body injuries. Th ree men were taken to hospital in a stable condition. A man in his 30s suffered upper body injuries and was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital, while two men, both in their 20s, were taken to the Alfred with minor injuries. WorkSafe said the site had been made safe and it was too early to comment on the incident. Laura Michell Heidi spent five weeks in the care of Little Urchins Sanctuary before being released. Students bring life to old station By Laura Michell Swinburne University students have created a series of designs to revitalise the run-down Broadmeadows train station. Masters students from the University’s School of Architecture partnered with Hume council to develop designs for the station, which has not been revamped since it opened in the 1990s. Hume council has been lobbying the state government to redevelop the station for a number of years, labelling the current station a disgrace. Swinburne University urban design director, Dr Ian Woodcock, said the students

Maria Sanjna’s design for Broadmeadows station. (Supplied)

reimagined the entire station precinct. “Each student carefully considered what a redeveloped Broadmeadows train station could look like,

along with how a complete redevelopment could provide a far better experience for the community,” he said. “While each design is different, each provides possible options to reconnect the western and eastern side of the Broadmeadows precinct to create a seamless train and bus interchange, plus encourage improved pedestrian and cycling routes through the precinct.” Masters student Maria Sanjna said her design aimed to transform the station precinct into a transit hub. “Being so close to Melbourne Airport it was important to consider that business people and tourists would be coming into the area, so the

station precinct design needed to eliminate any barriers and focus on the importance of public transportation and pedestrian access,” she said. Hume mayor Carly Moore said the students’ designs resolved the accessibility and amenity challenges of the station. “Their ideas transformed a dark, confusing, uninviting transport interchange into a bright and welcoming place that has the potential to reinvigorate the surrounding area,” she said. “Council has been advocating for the Broadmeadows train station redevelopment for many years. The local community deserves better than the ad-hoc investment and works we have seen in recent years.”

Train platform extended Passengers will be able to board trains faster at Donnybrook station, after the city-bound platform was extended. The extension means the station is now able to accommodate five and six carriage trains, allowing passengers to board from any door. The state government expects the platform extension will reduce the amount of time trains spend at the station by two minutes, helping to reduce delays on the Seymour line. Yan Yean MP Danielle Green said the Donnybrook community was growing fast. “As more people use the station, it’s important they have improved facilities and services to ensure less delays and more reliable journeys,” she said. A new carpark is also under construction at the station, providing 150 extra spaces. Two new bus bays, a drop-off zone and a taxi rank

are being created. The upgrade is expected to be completed later this year. The carpark upgrade and platform extension were funded from the state and federal governments $1.75 billion Regional Rail Revival program, which aims to improve safety, access and comfort for passengers. Yuroke MP Ros Spence said: “It’s exciting to see work underway on Donnybrook Station’s new carpark – just another example of how we’re working to cater for the growing communities in this region.” Laura Michell Yan Yean MP Danielle Green, Regional Rail Revival acting director Ben Henshall and Yuroke MP Ros Spence. ‘Cat’ moves on property portal The rapid growth of property portal realestateview.com.au (REV) has continued, with the appointment of Antony Catalano as a board member. Mr Catalano and his business partner, billionaire investor Alex Waislitz, who acquired Australia Community Media (ACM) last year, now hold the largest interest in realestateview. com.au, with an economic stake of 26 per cent. REV is the third largest property portal in Australia. Its audience has grown by more than 40 per cent over the past 12 months. Realestateview.com.au chief executive Tony Balazs said the business had undergone a period of rapid transformation. “The opportunity to work with ACM and extend our brand through their network is a clear vote of confidence for the work we’ve been doing. The opportunity will allow us to further grow our audience and deliver improved results for our customers,” he said. “Antony has an impressive track record of rapidly growing media businesses, particularly in the real estate category. I feel confident that realestateview.com.au will grow its market value immensely by becoming part of Antony’s cross-platform media network.” Mr Catalano’s appointment to the board follows the launch of realestateview.com.au and CoreLogic’s price estimator late last year. Mr Catalano said realestateview.com.au had a range of industry attractions but its most valuable asset was it’s highly engaged audience. “This audience, coupled with the ability to deliver advertising solutions at speed, presents a compelling opportunity to create

a multi-pronged media group inclusive of a property portal,” he said. Star News Group, publisher of this title, has been an investor in REV since 2017 along with a number of other independent media publishers. Star News Group managing director Paul Thomas said: “This is a business with a significant audience and high growth. “Antony Catalano and his 170 plus regional titles involvement will assist that rapid expansion. It will be a win for agents, vendors and buyers.”

New parks, more kindergarten space and safer streets are on the way for Whittlesea, after the council received more than $6 million from the Growing Suburbs Fund. The council received funding for five projects from the state government’s fund, which is designed to help interface councils deliver community facilities. Whittlesea council received $2.5 million towards stage one of the Quarry Hills Regional Parkland, which will include walking trails, playgrounds and ropes courses. The council also received $2 million towards the upgrade and rejuvenation of the Whittlesea Public Gardens, and $1.5 million towards the last stage of the Lalor Streetscape upgrade

which aims to improve safety, seating and public space in Lalor. The government also contributed $500,000 towards the expansion of Bundoora’s McLeans Road Kindergarten, and $375,000 towards the revitalisation of the Whittlesea Community Skate Park. Local Government Minister Adem Somyurek said the Growing Suburbs Fund helped interface councils meet the needs of their growing communities. Mill Park MP Lily D’Ambrosio said the funding for Quarry Hills Regional Parkland would create a new park for families to explore. Laura Michell

SPORT Bulldogs record key win as finals race intensifies Bundoora United took it down to the wire but came away with the points against Mill Park in the Diamond Valley Cricket Association’s Money Shield on the weekend. In a round affected by rain, the Bulldogs were one of just three teams to get a win. Bulldogs captain Mathew Ross said while some sides were happy to come away with the draw and three points, they were going to go for the win no matter what on Saturday. “We don’t want to leave anything to chance,” he said. “Mill Park batted on, so they needed to bowl us out to get the points. “We had a shortened amount of time to get the runs. “We managed to get there by the skin of our teeth.” Mill Park managed to get to 149, with Rayan Williams the standout with 82. Scott Barnett took 5-28 off 24 overs for the Bulldogs. Ross said after a slow start with the bat, they

were able to take control of the game. “They started well with the ball and they had us on the back foot,” he said. “We had a good partnership between Corey Cogan and Conlan Gunn for about 70 or 80 for the third wicket. “We needed 30 off the last 10 overs. In the end we needed six off the last over.” The Bulldogs finished 7-152. Cogan was the pick of the batters with 59. Ross said what pleased him most was how the side went about the run chase. “We have a lot of experienced cricketers and we kept stressing don’t panic and play the situation. “You have to look for your ball. It went deeper than I would have liked, but we didn’t panic.” The win was a massive one in the context of the season, with the other four teams fighting for finals spots, all having draws. The Bulldogs now sit three points clear on

top and nine points clear of fifth. Having missed out on finals last year, the Bulldogs aren’t taking anything for granted. “We have to win the last two games to make finals to be 100 per cent there,” he said. “Last season we missed finals by one point and one more game we would have finished on top. “We don’t want to leave anything to chance and we want to keep improving every week. “We’re just trying to worry about next week.” The Bulldogs face Old Paradians and third placed Lalor Stars in the final two rounds. In other results, Lalor Stars had to settle for a draw against Eltham. Mernda made it two wins in a row, beating Research Eltham Collegians, while Old Paradians beat Lower Plenty. Bats finals dreams over

14 NORTHERN STAR WEEKLY Tuesday, 11 February, 2020

FFA Cup The FFA Cup gets underway this weekend with the first qualifying stage of the Victorian part of the tournament. Teams from state league 5, metropolitan and country based competitions will play off for a spot in the second round of qualifying against higher ranked sides. New state league 5 side Broadmeadows Stars will play Maribyrnong Greens, Bundoora United will face Bacchus Marsh, Meadow Park takes on Mt Lilydale Old Collegians, Tullamarine plays Boronia and RMIT hosts Maidstone.

By Tara Murray Plenty Valley will miss finals for the first time since 2010-11 in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association after another disappointing performance. Last season’s north-east premiers, the Bats have struggled to recapture that form in the north-south competition this season. With just three wins, they sit 12th with two rounds remaining. With teams above them facing each other in the coming weeks, the Bats will still miss finals even if they score the maximum 16 points on offer. Bats captain-coach Ryan Pearson said the group was disappointed with how the season had played out. “We know we have the ability and we have proven that for three quarters of games that we can be the better side,” he said. “But you can’t play three quarters of a game of cricket, you have to put the performances on the board.” Pearson said it had been their batting that had let them down throughout the season, with the side playing some “dumb cricket”. “Looking at the stats, in eight games this year, we’ve lost eight for 100 or less, we’ve lost clumps of wickets all year. “It’s poor shots, dumb cricket for a lot of it. “You don’t get too many absolute jaffas that get you out. Most of the time it’s the batsmen getting themselves out.” For a third straight match, the Bats have been left to rue not putting together a complete performance. Facing Ormond, in a one-dayer, after day one was washed out, the Bats were on top early. Pearson said they did a good job with the ball. “We started off well, as we have for a lot of the season with the ball,” he said. “Blacky [Simon Black] and Dayne [Smith] had them 4-15 and then they were 6-60 on a pretty flat wicket. “To get them 9-149 we thought that score was unders.” Black, Smith and Michael Rogneda finished with two wickets each for the Bats. Things started off well with the bat for the Bats, who were 0-30. Pearson went out and then it was all downhill from there, as they were bowled out for 130. “Every time we would get on top we would lose a wicket,” he said. “Four or five average shots doesn’t help the cause. That’s the story of the year.” Blake Pearson was the pick of the batters with 45, but there was little other support. Ryan Pearson said that they would fight out

NPL Hume City fell just short in the National Premier League Community Shield on Saturday in Caroline Springs. Facing Bentleigh Greens, neither side was able to find the back of the net in the first half, with scores still locked at 0-0 at the end of regular time. There was no extra time, with the game going straight to penalties. Both teams missed shots early in the shoot out, and it would be the Greens that took the trophy, winning 7-6 on penalties. Hume is back in action on Saturday night against Melbourne Knights in the opening round of the NPL season.

NMCA Rivergum is in control of its match with Preston YCW District after day one of their clash in the North Metro Cricket Association Jika Shield. The second placed Kookas made 197 with Jarrod Bannister top scoring with 63. The Kookas bowlers stepped up with the ball late in the day, to have Preston in trouble at 3-20.

Premier Cricket Greenvale Kangaroos and Casey-South Melbourne played out a high scoring draw in Victorian Premier Cricket. Casey-South Melbourne made 5-470 from its overs with Luke Wells smashing 290. The Kangaroos fought hard and were 8-333 with contributions throughout the order. Dayne Smith did the damage with the ball early. (Shawn Smits) 201636_16

the season and wanted to finish it on a high. He said they would look at giving some of the younger players more of an opportunity up the order in the final two rounds, with finals already out of the equation.

“Hopefully we can finish the season with some fight and we’ll play out every game.” In good news for the Bats, Pearson said most of the group had committed to returning next year.

SPORT

Stars line up for EDFL bushfire fundraiser The excitement is growing ahead of the Essendon District Football League Bushfire Appeal games this Sunday. Teams from across the league have come together for the day which will include two football games – a women’s and men’s game at Highgate Reserve, Craigieburn. Roxburgh Park coach and event organiser Michael Farrelly said it was all pretty exciting. He said speaking to those involved from his club, they couldn’t wait to be part of it. “Still being relatively new to the competition, there’s a lot of people I don’t know,” he said. “Players are putting their hands up and we appreciate the clubs letting their players play. “Everyone has bought into it and the calibre of players we have got, should put on a good show.” Across the two matches, players from 28 clubs will be involved, with coaches, trainers runners and team managers also putting their hands up.

Roxburgh Park players who will be involved in the match. (Supplied)

Both matches will have a team ‘Fire’ and team ‘Smoke’. The first match will be the women’s game which begins at 12.30pm. Roxburgh Park’s Troy Geary and Airport West’s Anthony Montrose will coach the Fire team.

Burnside Heights skipper Kayla Ravanello, her teammate Sina Mason, Greenvale star Bianca Torrijos and Roxburgh Park’s Rainbow Ebert are among the stars in that side. Keilor’s Ron Sikora and Keilor Park’s Marcus Barclay will coach the Smoke team. Former league best and fairest winner Bailee Said, Moonee Valley star Georgia Marsland and former AFLW player Alyssa Misfud among the players to watch out for. All but one club will be represented in the men’s game which will kick off at 2pm. Farrelly, Aberfeldie’s Adam Potter, Glenroy’s Ross Terranova and Tullamarine’s David Connell will coach the Fire team. Former AFL players Matt Watson and Kyle Remiers will headline the side which has stars from all three divisions. The Smoke team will be coached by new Coburg Districts coach Tom Gleeson, Westmeadows’ Mo Kakkour and Craigieburn premiership coach Lance Whitnall.

Division 1 best and fairest winner Robbie Castello, Keilor’s Zac Wunhym, division 2 grand final best on Brenton Sutherland are among some of the stars in the Smoke team. While the matches are the focus of the day, Farrelly said the day was much bigger than that. “It kind of feels like we’re celebrating a festival, rather than a couple of football games,” he said. “There will be jumping castles, food trucks, a DJ and the CFA is coming down. There will be a few special guests floating around. “There’s still quite a bit happening with a silent auction and sponsors who want to get involved.” Everyone who is participating in the day will be donating something to raise funds for those affected by the fires. There is a $10 entry fee. The money raised will be shared around between the CFA, a wildlife fund and the Bendigo Bank Bushfire Appeal. Tara Murray

Demons claim points By Tara Murray There were a few nervous moments before Tullamarine claimed first innings points against Airport West St Christophers in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association division 1 west Peter Howarth Shield. In a day that favoured the bowlers, the Demons secured first innings points late on day one with just one wicket in hand. Airport West elected to bat and at one stage were 2-57, before a late order collapse left them bowled out for 92. Demons coach Buddy Mendis said they were happy with how they had performed with the ball. Shehan De Silva continued his good form taking five wickets and took his tally to 31 wickets for the season. Demons stalwart David Zahorodni had his best bowling performance of the season, taking the other five wickets. Despite chasing such a low total, Mendis said they knew that the run chase wasn’t going to be an easy one.

“We knew the runs were going to be hard to get,” he said. “Once you lose one wicket on that pitch, you can lose five or six wickets. “That’s what happened with them and they collapsed.” The Demons lower order came to the rescue late, to ensure they came way with first innings points. They will resume at 9-98. Number 10 Tim Matsen and number 11 Brett Walters are the two not out batsmen. Kansajith Kahandugoda top scored with 24, going out just before his side sealed the points. The Demons though aren’t content with just getting six points, they have their eyes on the full 10 points. Sitting 12 points outside the top four, an outright victory would put them well and truly back into the finals mix. Airport West sits one position above and will be looking for a reverse outright win, to keep its finals hopes alive. Mendis said both sides won’t be content after day one. He said they haven’t given up on playing finals.

“For us, any chance to finish in the top half, we need to have an outright win,” he said. “We know that it is the sort of year, where anyone on their day can beat anyone. “It will be really interesting.” In division 1 north, it was a mixed day for finals hopefuls Craigieburn and Westmeadows. Craigieburn is in trouble in its run chase against St Francis de Sales. The Eagles did the job with the ball, bowling St Francis out for 85. In reply, they are 4-24. Westmeadows had a good day with the bat against PEGS. The Warriors made 214 with Chinthaka Jayasinghe the star with 70 coming in at number three. The Warriors put on 35 for the last partnership to push the score past 200. PEGS got off to the worst start in its run chase, and will resume at 1-6. Greenvale Kangaroos have a big run chase on their hands against West Coburg, which made 4-269. In division 5, Jacana has already conceded first innings points against Williamstown Colts.

Roxburgh Park is working hard to bridge the gap between it and the top sides in Essendon District Football League division 1. Having achieved its aim last season to stay up in division 1 after being promoted, the Magpies are keen to show they have improved. If early signs are anything to go by, Magpies coach Michael Farrelly thinks it might be the case. “Pre-season numbers are the best they have been in my time in the club,” he said. “The guys are working extremely hard and are fitter and stronger than last year. “We’re teaching them a lot of things about footy. “We’re under no illusions, we’re not going to be a top two or three side, we want to win more games than last year and be more competitive. “The work ethic can’t be questioned.” The Magpies have also looked to add some more experience to their squad to help guide their young list. Farrelly said they needed some players with a bit more experience to help steer the ship on the ground. He said they would have more depth in both their seniors and reserves. Matt Coomans has joined the side as a playing assistant coach, with Farrelly saying he was already showing his leadership skills on the training track. Nathan Reichelt and Luke Scarpini are two who have come across from Craigieburn. Farrelly said having been around a premiership team, which has previously played at a higher level, would add to the side. Former Northern Saints skipper Daniel Boudoloh is returning to the EDFL, after spending the last couple of years in the Southern Football League. He will give the Magpies some flexibility. The Magpies are also hopeful that former player Brad Dimech will return to the club. Mernda has denied his clearances, due to him being contracted. Farrelly said Dimech wanted to come back to Roxburgh Park where his mates are and play at a higher level of football. He said they would go to AFL Victoria to appeal Mernda’s decision not to clear him. The Magpies kick off their season on April 4 against Taylors Lakes.
