Teenager on new council The Whittlesea community is likely to be represented by five new faces, with one councillor-elect being a 19-year-old. Provisional results of the October 22 poll have been released by the Victorian Electoral Commission (VEC) and show at least one new representative being elected in each ward. The results will be finalised by the VEC at a poll declaration at 6pm on Wednesday. In North ward, former mayor Ricky Kirkham will be re-elected, securing 35 per cent of first preference votes. He will be joined by newcomers John Butler and 19-year-old Emilia Sterjova. Ms Sterjova is likely to become Whittlesea’s youngest-ever councillor. Outgoing councillor Christine Stow appears to have been unsuccessful in seeking re-election. South-west ward voters appear to have returned ex-councillors Stevan Kozmevski and Kris Pavlidis, who will be joined by Caz Monteleone and former Whittlesea Shire councillor Lawrie Cox. In South-east ward, Mary Lalios, Sam Alessi and Norm Kelly are re-elected, but Ken Harris won’t be returned, voters preferring Route 86 tram extension campaigner Alahna Desiato. Results for Hume were finalised on Monday, with the community to be represented by seven new councillors. Aitken ward voters chose not to re-elect Chandra Bamunusinghe and Alan Bolton, while Casey Nunn did not contest the poll. Drew Jessop returns and is joined by Joseph Haweil, Jodi Jackson and Carly Moore. Meadow Valley ward will be represented by veteran councillor Geoff Porter and newcomers Karen Sherry, Jana Taylor and Naim Kurt. Former

mayor Adem Atmaca was not re-elected. Jackson Creek voters returned Jack Medcraft and Ann Potter, who will be joined by police officer Leigh Johnson. Whittlesea and Hume councillors will be sworn in on Thursday and November 7, respectively, when they will also elect new mayors.

Volunteers from Epping RSL will be out in force at shopping centres across Whittlesea ahead of Remembrance Day next Friday. The volunteers will be selling red poppies to raise money for servicemen and women in need as part of RSL Victoria’s annual poppy appeal. The iconic flower symbolises soldiers who died during war and was among the first plants to bloom in the devastated battlefields of northern France and Belgium following World War I. Epping RSL sub-branch manager Narrelle Hart says a special remembrance day service is planned for local schools, with pupils given the chance to lay poppies or white crosses in honour of fallen soldiers. A community service will be held at 11am on Friday, November 11, at the RSL, 195 Harvest Home Road, Epping. Laura Michell

House price surge in outer north By Laura Michell House prices jumped about 10 per cent in just the three months to September in outer suburbs including South Morang and Doreen, new data reveals. Real Estate Institute of Victoria (REIV) figures show South Morang recorded the strongest growth in house prices of any suburb in Whittlesea in the September quarter, with the median price rising 11.3 per cent, to $550,750. In Doreen, the median price rose by 8.2 per cent to $530,000.

Harcourts Mill Park-South Morang director Daniel Taylor said Whittlesea’s outer suburbs were popular with buyers looking for affordable properties close to public transport, community facilities and infrastructure. He said the $588 million Mernda rail extension is helping attract buyers. The South Morang line will be extended to Mernda with new stations at Mernda and South Morang’s Marymede Catholic College, and a third station being considered at Hawkstowe Parade, “The infrastructure promises are encouraging people to live in South Morang,

‘‘

’’

Doreen and Mernda,” Mr Taylor said. “People are not put off by living further out.” Mr Taylor said buyers are also turning to outer suburbs because of “incredible” increases in house prices in Bundoora and Mill Park. According to the REIV, the median house price in Mill Park is $565,000 – an increase of

6.6 per cent from June. But Mr Taylor said it was not uncommon for properties in the suburb to sell for $900,000. REIV lists Bundoora’s median house price as $650,000. Mr Taylor said overall, Whittlesea’s real estate market is experiencing “unprecedented” growth. However, median house prices in the municipality remain below the Melbourne-wide median of $740,000. REIV chief executive Geoff White said Melbourne’s residential market is showing no signs of slowing down ahead of summer. “Everything is aligned for sellers,” he said.

Show day brings country life to town Students from Whittlesea Primary School are counting down the days until their town goes on show. Some of the highlights planned for this year’s Whittlesea Show include camel rides, alpaca shows, a poultry pavilion, woodchopping competitions and steam engine displays. The annual event, now in its 157th year, is full of olden days-style competitions, giving visitors a chance to experience country culture

up close. Whittlesea Agricultural Society secretary Tracey Goss said the theme of this year’s show is ‘country community’, because the event brings people together and helps local groups showcase their work. “The show is an avenue for a lot of community groups to earn their own revenue,” she said. In addition to traditional show attractions, this year’s event will also feature quirky competitions, such as the Australian dunny

challenge, in which contestants must construct an outdoor loo in one hour without using power tools; also best decorated jocks; and oddest shaped fruit and vegetables competitions. The show is at Whittlesea Showgrounds, Yea Road, Whittlesea, on November 5-6, from 9am-5pm. Details: www.whittleseashow.org.au

Single working women are being locked out of Whittlesea’s rental market, with only one suburb left that’s affordable. New data from the Council to Homeless Persons (CHP) reveals Bundoora is the only suburb in Whittlesea where a single woman on an average wage of $882 a week can afford to rent a one-bedroom flat without being in rental stress. A person is considered to be in rental stress if they pay more than 30 per cent of their income on rent. CHP chief executive Jenny Smith said there are fewer affordable rental properties in Whittlesea than there were in 2007. CHP data from 2007 reveals that affordable one-bedroom flats were still available in Whittlesea, Mill Park, Epping and Bundoora. Ms Smith said that across Melbourne, just one in four suburbs were affordable for single working women, compared to one in two in 2007. In Hume, affordable rentals can be found in Broadmeadows, Roxburgh Park, Gladstone Park and Tullamarine, while Craigieburn is no longer affordable. Ms Smith said single women are at risk of homelessness as a result. “If it’s this hard for a woman on the average working wage to find somewhere affordable to live, imagine how hard it is if you’ve fallen on hard times,” she said. “Single people on low incomes are forced to spend more than they can afford on rent – that’s why we’ve seen a boom in rooming houses, people living in caravan parks, women … couch surfing.” CHP has urged the state government to invest in more affordable one-bedroom properties. Playtime for ‘multiples’ Families with twins and triplets in Whittlesea and Hume will have access to extra support after the Diamond Valley Multiple Births Association received a grant to fund a weekly playgroup at Epping. The association received $1000 from developer Stockland’s community grants program. Association member Larissa Jordan says the grant will help the playgroup provide an essential support network for families with multiples. “Parents of multiples are at much higher risk of postnatal depression and the children are often more likely to have medical issues w w w.

associated with being born prematurely, which is more common in multiple pregnancies,” Ms Jordan said. “Isolation is also a big issue for parents of multiples as it’s very difficult to get out with two or more babies or toddlers. “Having a safe place like playgroup, where others will support and understand you, makes things much easier.” The playgroup meets at Epping North Pre-school, 378 Findon Road, Epping, on Tuesdays from 9.30-11.30am. New ambo station for the north By Laura Michell

A step in the right direction Ronald Briggs is driven by a passion to help Aboriginal men live happy, fulfilling lives. For years, Mr Briggs has worked with men of his community on health and helping them connect better with their families and children. He wants more Aboriginal men to be hands-on in raising their children, but knows this will require cultural change. To help, Mr Briggs runs a parenting program for Aboriginal dads with Mercy Hospital, as well as a fortnightly support group, where fathers can discuss the challenges they face as parents. Through his work as a senior cultural advisor at the Children’s Protection Society, Mr Briggs also provides Aboriginal dads with counselling. His dedication to ensuring more children spend time with their fathers has led to Mr Briggs being nominated for a HESTA community sector unsung hero award. He is one of four finalists, with the winner due to be announced on November 17. Mr Briggs said he wants to ensure more Aboriginal children have good male role models by encouraging men to support their partners and look after their own health. “A lot of my friends have passed on and they shouldn’t have,” he said. “I want to help men live a long life if they can, and make sure men are staying on the right track.”

Mernda is to get a new ambulance station, ensuring paramedics can respond sooner to emergencies in the fast-growing suburb. The state government announced last week it would use a $1.5 million growth area infrastructure grant to buy land for the new station. Ambulance Services Minister Jill Hennessy said the funding paves the way for a new state-of-the-art station, which will give Ambulance Victoria the facilities it needs to operate a dedicated Mernda ambulance crew. The suburb is currently served by crews from Epping, Whittlesea and Diamond Creek. Over the next 20 years, Mernda’s population is estimated to soar by about 68 per cent, to 28,200 people. The government will work with Ambulance Victoria to identify the best location for the station, but it has not said yet when the station will be built. The station will feature an ambulance garage, training areas, rest and recline rooms and a fully-fitted kitchen. Ms Hennessy said the new station would meet an increasing demand for ambulance services in the Whittlesea area. “We know we need to invest now to meet the health care needs of the rapidly growing communities in Melbourne’s north, such as Mernda, and we’re getting it done,” she said. “Work now gets under way to locate the best possible site.” Yan Yean MP Danielle Green, who has been lobbying the government to build an ambulance station at Mernda, said the area has one of the fastest growing communities in Australia and deserved its own ambulance crew and station.

Schools share in building boom By Laura Michell Buildings at 22 schools across Whittlesea and Hume will be demolished, replaced or refurbished after more than $3.8 million was injected into school maintenance funding by the state government. The money is part of a $41.6 million planned maintenance program, and 13 Whittlesea schools including Peter Lalor Vocational College, Lalor North Secondary College, Thomastown Meadows Primary School and Epping Primary School will share in $2.3 million.

‘‘

We want to develop an innovation and excellence - John Conway centre

’’

Lalor North Secondary College will receive one of Whittlesea’s largest funding allocations, with the school earmarked to receive $378,000. Principal John Conway said the school had been built in the 1960s and was in reasonably good condition, but the money would help to “spark” the school up a bit.

“One of the issues we will use it to address is our year 9 lockers,” he said. “[They] are at the back of the gym and have no shelter. We are hoping to build a shelter off the edge of the lockers because the students just get soaked. “I would have moved [the lockers] into corridors next year, if we hadn’t got the money,” Mr Conway said. “We will also use it to upgrade the library and classrooms … and we have got a classroom we want to develop into an innovation and excellence centre.” In Hume, $1.5 million will be shared by nine schools, including Craigieburn Secondary

College, Roxburgh Homestead Primary School and Campbellfield Heights Primary School. Yan Yean MP Danielle Green said the money will help schools do upgrades and improvements to buildings that have fallen below minimum standards. “These are some fantastic schools in Melbourne’s north and this funding boost will mean facilities can be upgraded to match the high quality teaching and learning environment the schools provide,” she said. The government said the statewide school building boom would create 400 construction jobs.

Where peace, joy reign Hundreds of people are expected to flock to Yuroke’s Buddhist temple in search of positivity and happiness this weekend. The Tibetan Buddhist Society is holding its annual spring festival at the Peaceful Land of Joy Meditation Centre and is encouraging people to visit the centre and its temple to better understand Buddhism. The open day will feature speakers from the Tibetan, Korean and Japanese traditions who will explain Buddhist philosophy and meditation methods, and there will be conducted tours of the temple and its gardens. Children’s storytimes, meditation sessions, a photography exhibition, market and an outdoor cafe are also on the program. Society director Rebecca Skelton says the open day experience can help people find ways to become happier, more relaxed and enhance their lives.

“This vibrant festival offers something for everyone, from those exploring meditation, wishing to enjoy the beautiful gardens or to learn about the traditional Tibetan temple and the ancient culture of Tibet,” she said. The spring festival at 1425 Mickleham Road, Yuroke, is on November 5-6 from 9.30am-5pm. Laura Michell

Fire Action Week 23 to 30 October 2016

This summer is forecast to be a dangerous fire season. Fire Action Week is the time for all Victorians to get ready for the heat ahead. Many Victorians have been battling persistent rain and rising flood waters. This rainfall has increased growth of vegetation in forested, bush and grassfire areas across the state. As summer intensifies, these regions will dry out quickly, increasing the risk of uncontrollable fires, especially over Christmas and summer holidays. Emergency services are working with communities, businesses, councils and government to reduce risks in your area, while ensuring resources are in place to respond to all emergencies. However, it is up to you to understand the risks in your area, monitor conditions and take responsibility for your own safety and the safety of your household. Be prepared before summer so you know what to do when a fire starts.

Talk to your family and friends about how you’ll know when to leave, and where to go to stay safe. Leaving early means leaving before a fire starts – not when you can see flames or smell smoke. Leaving early means avoiding panic, and not making wrong decisions that could be dire. Use Fire Action Week to prepare your home and property, especially if you live in bush and grassfire prone areas. If you take the right steps now, your decisions in an emergency will be easier and clearer. • Talk to your household and neighbours about what you’ll do on high risk days, and have a plan if fire threatens you and your home this summer • Check fire danger ratings daily at emergency.vic.gov.au to find out how dangerous a fire would be if one started, and monitor warnings, especially when the fire danger rating is severe, extreme or code red • Pack an emergency kit of essentials

Message from the Premier

The Hon Daniel Andrews MP Premier of Victoria

Be Fire Ready. THE REASONS ARE BLACK AND WHITE.

Fire Action Week The Right Time To Prepare

1. Plan what you’ll do in the event of a fire, talk to your household and know where to access information on high risk days. 2. Keep grass short. Fire can ignite and travel quickly through long grass. 3. Get rid of dry grass, leaves, twigs and loose bark around your home. 4. Remove or prune shrubs near windows and well away from branches of mature trees. 5. Cut back overhanging tree branches close to property – no branches within 10 metres. 6. Keep gutters and roof areas clear of leaf litter (if you are physically able to). 7. Remove all materials from around the home that could burn, such as boxes, furniture and woodpiles.

Reigning Northern Region T20 premiers Lalor Warriors have started their title defence with a win against Mernda on Tuesday. Mernda was bowled out for 110 with one ball remaining, while Warriors hit the winning tally with 10 balls to spare. Simon Hill starred for the Warriors, making 48 not out. Other winners were Epping, Laurimar Plenty Valley and Bundoora United.

By Tara Murray A middle order fightback gave Lalor Warriors a third straight win to start their North Metro Cricket Association Jika Shield season. Facing reigning premiers Rivergum without a win so far, the Warriors were always in for a challenge. The Kookas started well and were cruising at 2-93. But the loss of two quick wickets slowed progress, and the final tally at overs’ end was 7-174. Alex Jesensek top-scored with 32, while Matthew Perri made 30. Brad Winther took 4-35. Kookas’ bowlers did damage early, with the Warriors in trouble at 5-31. Skipper Todd Hughes and Angelo Pereira came to the rescue, put on an unbeaten partnership of 145 to chase down the runs. The Warriors finished at 5-175. Hughes top-scored with an unbeaten 77, while Pereira made 66 not out. Scott Morley was the best of the bowlers for the Kookas with three wickets. The Warriors stay on top of the ladder, the only team to get a win in round two. Rivergum sits at sixth with two losses and a draw. In other results, it was a terrible day for Keon Park against Northcote United. Sent in, Keon Park was 1-31 after losing the first wicket before scoring. But it all went wrong from there. Keon Park then lost 9-21, to be all out for 52. The chase was an easy one for United, which made the runs in eight overs without losing a wicket. In the Quick Shield, Bundoora Park defeated the Cobras. Angelo Pereira came to the rescue of Lalor Warriors with 66 not out. (Shawn Smits)

VTCA

Greenvale Kangaroos finally played a full game, and they took the points against Tullamarine in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association’s T20 competition. Playing in the Mickleham group, the Kangaroos made 6-110 from their overs; Tullamarine could only muster 9-101 in reply. The other opening round Mickleham group match between PEGS and Westmeadows was washed out.

Football

Essendon District and Western Region football leagues will have separate youth girls football competitions from next year. The two have run a joint competition for a number of years, to ensure there were enough sides competing. With the numbers of clubs wanting to field sides in under-12s, under-15s and under-18s age groups, the competition will now become two competitions. SPORT Junior star on United trajectory By Tara Murray After following his dad to Bundoora United, Ikroop Dhanoa has taken his natural shine for cricket to new heights of brilliance. Part of three junior cricket premierships at United by the age of 10, Ikroop has now been selected for the School Sport Victoria 12 and under cricket carnival in Canberra in January. He was selected after two trials. “We had one trial in the term two school holidays, and then another in term three,” he said. “I then had to wait three to four days to find out.” Training started last week, and Ikroop was expecting plenty of all round practice. He said, as well as playing cricket, he’d love to see Manuka Oval, where both cricket and AFL are played, during his Canberra visit. While still an all-round cricketer like most young kids, he does have one speciality he has been focusing on. Ikroop decided he wanted to be a leg spinner, taking inspiration from Australia’s greatest ever leg spinner, so far.

“When I was seven, I saw a few videos of Shane Warne and I was surprised how much spin he was getting, and decided I wanted to have a go.”

He has watched many videos since of Warne to improve his game, while reading many cricket autobiographies to understand the mental strength that is needed to play the game.

Knights coach brings empathy Rebecca Privitelli, the first Northern Knights football youth girls coach, initially put in an application to be the side’s team manager. When her application arrived too late, the club was still keen to get in touch. “They said, ‘Come in and have a chat’ – and we started talking about coaching,” Privitelli said. “I would have rather coaching anyway.” The 21-year-old has held a number of coaching roles in the past two years. She’s been an assistant coach at the Calder Cannons, co-coach of the Victorian under-16 girls team, coach of the Yarra youth girls summer program and coach at Loyola College. Privitelli said the opportunity to coach close to home was too good to refuse. “It is a big move at my age, but I’ve been through what a lot of players have,” she said. “I started coaching when I was 19 and [was] too old for youth girls. I wanted to pursue another level within football.” The announcement caps off a big couple of weeks for Privitelli, who was taken at pick 142 by Carlton in the inaugural AFL women’s draft. Her coach at Carlton is Damian Keeping, who was head coach at the Cannons when Privitelli was assistant. “He’s played a huge part in my career and has a great football brain,” she said. “I’ll keep learning off him.” Privitelli believes she can play a key role in the development of female football. “One issue with girls football – there isn’t enough females involved,” she said. “There are some fantastic male coaches out there, but for youth girls coming through I can connect in another way with them. I’ve been through it and understand what it feels to be in their position.” Privitelli said the Knights were in the final stages of the selection process, with training to start next week. The Knights will compete in the AFL Victoria Youth Girls Academy Challenge over six weeks next year.

Plenty Valley veteran Sean Ayres continues to dazzle with the ball in the Victorian Sub-district Cricket Association’s north-south season competition. After making the most of conditions in round one, Ayres was again the main destroyer in the Bats’ round two match against Moorabbin. In what became a one-day match after a first-day washout last week, the Bats sent Moorabbin in to bat at the A.K Line Reserve. The decision paid dividends as Justin Jaensch claimed the early wicket of Vidusha Jayasinghe. Then enters Ayres, who took three of the next four wickets, the other a run-out, as Moorabbin slumped to 5-48. The sixth wicket fell not long afterwards. Skipper Asfan Thajudeen steadied the innings scoring with 44 to push the team’s total to 121. Ayres was the best of the bowlers taking 3-4 off nine overs, including six maidens. Matthew Hewat and Luke Robinson took two wickets each. In reply, the Bats made light work of the total, passing it in the 23rd over. Ayres (37) and Harjinder Singh Chahal (31) put on 52 for the first wicket. Simon Bray was then out cheaply, before Robinson and Daniel Heatley took them over the line at the loss of three wickets. It was Heatley’s first game with the club since the 2013-14 season. The Bats sit on top of the ladder after a similar comprehensive result against Brighton in round one. Four teams have won their opening two matches, Elsternwick, Coburg and Oakleigh being the others. The Bats face St Bernard’s OC on Saturday. The Bats’ women’s side had a tough day against Melbourne Cricket Club in Victorian Premier Cricket. Batting first the Bats made 171 before being bowled out in the 40th over. Sophie Reid top scored for the Bats with 68, while Mariko Hill made 52. In reply, MCC made the runs with seven wickets in hand and 19 overs to bat. Tara Murray

Dhanoa this season made the move to Plenty Valley to play turf cricket. All representative cricket is played on turf pitches. Last season, he was part of the Northern Falcons’ representative squad. His dad, Rupi, said Ikroop and he would always be in debt to United for what the club has done for the family. Rupi joined the club 10 years ago when he moved to Australia, and he still plays there today. “The senior cricketers take a lot of pride teaching the kids,” he said. “Mathew Ross has been his mentor. He said he thought he was ready to move to turf, and I respect his opinion. I think the club has to take a lot of credit for Ikroop’s cricket.” Ikroop is also full of praise for the club, especially for Ross. “I love them,” he said. “I’ve learnt a lot from the seniors – they’re always approachable and giving tips. “Mathew helped with my batting technique and helped with the mental side of things.” Ikroop is hoping to again make the Falcons side to play state championships early next year.

Warriors make most of batting time The Westmeadows batsmen relished the chance to have an extended hit in Victorian Turf Cricket Association’s north-west A1 competition. With rain postponing the Warriors’ season opener and the weather also denying them the chance to chase down Williamstown CYMS’s total last week, the Warriors’ batsmen had faced nine overs in the opening three weeks of the season. So the new-look Warriors batting line-up was itching to have a bat on Saturday against Pascoe Vale Hadfield. Led by star recruits Praneeth Jayasundara and Tarique Jeffrey, the Warriors made the most of the opportunity by making a massive 6-330. Jayasundara, who arrived from Jacana in the off season, made 137 and assistant coach Jeffrey made 72. Jeffrey, who is in his second stint at the Warriors, said that recruiting a player of Jayasundara’s calibre was a massive coup for

the club. In the match against Williamstown CYMS, which finished in a draw, he took six wickets. “We used to play together,” Jeffrey said. “He’s a good pick-up and has had consistency in the first couple of games.” Jeffrey has returned to the club after leading Pascoe Vale to a premiership last season as captain-coach. Jeffrey and Jayasundara are among a number of inclusions to a Warriors side looking to strengthen a batting line-up that has struggled the past few years. Mark King has come across from Gowanbrae, while Steven McKay joined from Footscray United. “On paper, we look a good side,” Jeffrey said. “But we still need to perform. The last couple of years we’ve been good on paper, too, but haven’t been able to capitalise. “We’re being really positive and looking to play good cricket. With Chanaka Welegedara, who played 20 Tests for Sri Lanka, Danny Law

and Sathpath Kamburugamuwa, we pretty much bat down the order.” Jayasundara and Jeffrey also strengthen the bowling line-up, which is led by Welegedara, the side’s new captain-coach who is in his second season at the club after moving from Sri Lanka. Jeffrey said the relationship between coach and assistant coach was an easy one. “I played with him at the same club back home,” Jeffrey said. “He brings a lot of knowledge and experience to the role.” In other north-west A1 matches, Craigieburn made 124 before having Glenroy 5-55 at stumps. In north A1, Roxburgh Park made 8-221 against Caroline Springs. Jacana has already conceded first-innings points against Moonee Valley. Jacana made 186 before Moonee Valley piled on the runs to be 7-237 at stumps. Tara Murray

Kangaroos sitting pretty By Tara Murray Greenvale is in the box seat to record its second win of the Victorian Premier Cricket season, but the Kangaroos aren’t getting ahead of themselves. The Kangaroos dominated day one of their match against Frankston Peninsula; if they play at the same sort of level on day two, victory should be theirs. The Kangaroos’ pace bowlers did the job early, bowling Frankston Peninsula out for 162. Frankston Peninsula was 1-76 before losing the last nine wickets for 84 runs. Kyle Adams took 5-33 and Aaron Smillie 4-57. Kangaroos coach Stan Nell said the bowlers made the most of pitch conditions. “It was a pace-friendly day,” he said. “All three pace bowlers bowled well. “Kyle returned to form. Aaron got his second four-wicket haul of the season and Trent [Waring] played his role.” In reply, the Kangaroos finished day one on 2-71 and need 92 runs for victory. Harry Dearden will resume on 33. “Even though we lost two wickets, we’re in a strong position,” Nell said. “Harry’s off to a good start and Zaheer Hussain faced 40-odd balls. “Harry is one of the mainstays of our batting line-up. He’s only 19 … he’s doing really well this year.” Skipper Jarrod Leggett, returning to the side after a back injury, made 25 before nicking one. “It was great to have him back out there,” Nell said. “He marshalled the troops in the field and looked good with the bat before going out. He’s an important part of the middle order.” Nell said that despite the Kangaroos’ strong position, they wouldn’t be satisfied until the winning runs were hit. “The job is only half done,” he said. “I’m really happy with the bowling and fielding and we’ve put ourselves in a good position. “The top eight sides are good at backing up week in week out and we want to be one of those sides. “Once we get the 92 runs, then the job is done.” Saturday’s match saw Bernard Kelly make his first XI debut for the Kangaroos. He played one first XI match in 2013-14 with Footscray Edgewater. Kelly was a late inclusion, replacing regular wicketkeeper Nathan Massey, taking three catches and making a stumping. “Bernard is 21 or 22,” Nell said. “When Nathan gives up cricket, Bernard is at the front of the line to replace him as the first XI keeper. We have high hopes for him in the future.” 18 NORTHERN STAR WEEKLY \ NOVEMBER 1, 2016

Run-outs cost Epping in bid for third win Epping will need quick wickets on day two of its match against Riverside in the Diamond Valley Cricket Association’s Barclay Shield if it’s to maintain its unbeaten start to the season. After a good win in round one and being one of only two teams to get a win in a rain-affected second round, for Epping a third straight win would help put it above the pack. But a less than ideal batting performance on Saturday against Riverside has left it with a lot of work to do on day two. Epping skipper John Lever was left to rue some poor running during the side’s innings of 124. “We started well with the bat,” he said. “Run-outs started to halt things and made it hard. We had three run-outs for the day, which was disappointing. The lower order put on 30-odd at the end and pushed the score to 124.” Anthony Licovski top-scored with 37 before being run out. Only three batsmen reached double figures. In reply, Riverside was 2-48 at stumps. Lever and John Kulikowski took the wickets for Epping. Lever said the side was hoping for a similarly strong showing by its bowlers to that delivered in the first two rounds. “We would have liked a couple more wickets going into day two,” he said. “It’s a good group of bowlers – we’re never out of it with this group.” Lever said the bowling line-up was similar to that of last season, with the addition of Andrew Bennett and Nathaniel Biggs. Bennett comes from Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association side Plenty Valley, while Biggs, who has missed this game, comes from St Andrews Cricket Club Pascoe Vale. Lever said Bennett, who has kids playing at the club, had provided some extra experience to the young side, which had lacked consistency in the past couple of seasons. In other games, Bundoora skipper Shupinder Taggar made 80 in his side’s total of 296 against North Eltham Wanderers. Taggar and Thomas Cummins put on 90 for the first wicket. Old Paradians/St Francis need quick wickets on day two of their match against Lower Eltham. The Wolves scored just 149 before being bowled out in the 71st over. Shaun Barker top-scored with 149. Lower Eltham will resume at 3-19. In the Money Shield, Lalor Stars are just nine runs from conceding first-innings points against Lower Plenty. Plenty Power will resume at 1-7 needing 197 against Mernda and Whittlesea needs 208 against Heidelberg. Tara Murray

hey might not admit this publicly, but most self-respecting sports car manufacturers have a Porsche Boxster tucked away at their test grounds. Why? Because it is the benchmark. It might not be the most powerful, fastest or most jaw-dropping drop-top going around, but it is arguably the most cohesive, albeit at a price north of $100,000. With a mid-mounted engine, taut body and a chassis tuned like a Stradivarius, the Boxster is pure sports car, bonded as a complete package for driving excellence. The latest iteration swaps the traditional six-cylinder horizontally opposed normally aspirated engine for a new turbo-charged four-cylinder “boxer”. Have no fear, the new, smaller but feistier 2.0-litre engine in the entry-level Boxster (the Boxster S gets a 2.5-litre version) delivers on all fronts, and even sounds splendid with the optional $4990 (phew!) sports exhaust.

little yoga experience helps one slip behind the wheel of this little darling, so snug and low to the ground that it puts you in mind of a racing car – except, of course, that this machine comes with a plush level of comfort. The cabin shows off Porsche heritage in small round driver dials, perhaps too small for the sat-nav tucked behind the steering wheel. We’re missing inclusions I expected at this level, such as a rear-vision camera, keyless entry and keyless start. As for storage, front and rear boots provide enough luggage space for a motoring holiday, yet there’s a lack of handy places for your water bottle, sunglasses and small change in the cabin. With the Boxster straining at the leash, we shook off the cobwebs and let it find its comfort zone with a spin down the coast. Roll on summer, when the easy one-switch roof lowering and raising will get a workout, undoubtedly turning a few more heads.
