Girls get skates on There’s not a single woman among the world’s 50 pro skaters. All the household names such as Tony Hawk, Ryan Sheckler and Bam Margera paint a picture of a male-dominated sporting arena, and it’s something Whittlesea council’s youth services team wants to change – from the ground up. So they’ve organised a project that will have groups of young women painting murals at two local skate parks in the hope a feminine touch will entice more girls. Mayor Stevan Kozmevski says the Regenerate Skate art project will give girls more ownership of the skate parks and confidence to use them. “We want young women to feel safe and able to use our skate parks, just as much as young men,” Cr Kozmevski said. Mural workshops will be held this week at Whittlesea Secondary College and Meadowglen Athletics Stadium in preparation for an in-situ painting session on March 17 at Epping and Whittlesea skate parks. The first unveiling is at noon on March 19 at the Epping park. It’s not too late to register. Extra station signalled By Alexandra Laskie A third train station, near Hawkstowe Parade, is likely to be incorporated into the proposed extension of the South Morang line to Mernda in response to community concern. Original plans for the rail extension specified two new stations – a premium station in Mernda integrated into the proposed Mernda Town Centre and one between Mernda and South Morang. But at a press conference on Sunday, February 28, to announce the opening of expressions of interest to design and construct

the extended rail line, Premier Daniel Andrews said bidders for the project would be required to investigate and cost a proposed third station near Hawkstowe Parade as part of the tender process. Community consultation sessions last year revealed that most residents wanted to be able to drive to a new station near Hawkstowe Parade. But limited land for carparking nearby led the state government to choose a site near Marymede Catholic College for the proposed station between Mernda and South Morang. South Morang and Mernda Rail Alliance

spokesman Darren Peters said he was pleased Premier Daniel Andrews had listened to the community’s concerns. “[Mr Andrews] said, ‘When the rail extension opens I want all three stations open’ – and I don’t think he’d say that unless he was serious,” Mr Peters said. Mr Andrews said a site near the Marymede college was chosen as the first station because of carparking capacity and proximity to schools and jobs. But given such strong support for another station at Hawkstowe Parade, he would incorporate a third station into the tender process.

The new station near Marymede college, close to Gordons Road, will have extensive carparking and bike storage, as well as bus stops. The third station at Hawkstowe Parade is described as being a “potential” in official Mernda rail documents issued by the Level Crossing Removal Authority. The authority has been charged with delivering the removal project. Upon its completion in 2019, it will include five grade separations, stabling facilities for trains north of Bridge Inn Road and eight kilometres of new dual rail line between South Morang and Mernda.

A Kalkallo service station is battling to get rid of backpackers who have been camping in its truck parking bays. The Caltex service station on the Hume Freeway has been inundated with backpackers since late last year. Owner John Nasir said the backpackers. mostly European, began setting up camp in the petrol station’s truck carpark last October. “From then on we saw trickles of it, but then just before the Australian Open [tennis tournament] it went ballistic,” Mr Nasir said.

“It was described as the Kalkallo gypsy camp. We’re talking between 30 and 40 camper vans. “On a bad day you couldn’t fit a single truck in there. They sat out there with all their chairs, washing lines and barbecues.” Unbeknown to Mr Nasir, someone had posted on a popular phone application used by backpackers – Wiki Camp Australia – describing the site as a free camping spot. The service station’s truck park is provided for truck drivers who need to stop and catch up on sleep. Showering facilities and toilets for the drivers are provided at no cost. Art joins dots between style, fashion Artist Samantha Lentini says she’s rendered spellbound by Aboriginal dot paintings – and it shows in her work. The Greenvale resident’s paintings use strong lines and series of dots that express her appreciation for the Indigenous painting technique. “I generally paint what I feel, but I’ve always been fascinated by Aboriginal dot work,” the 25-year-old says. Ms Lentini will exhibit her work for the

first time this month at the Gee Lee-Wik Doleen Gallery, at Craigieburn’s Hume Global Learning Centre. Her exhibition follows a successful 2015, when she received a Hume arts award. Not only does Ms Lentini paint and draw, she runs an online clothing business and works part-time as a stylist for Sussan. Hume mayor Helen Patsikatheodorou described the artist as an extremely creative and talented woman.

“Her artwork embodies wonderful patterns and spectacular colours, and the paintings and drawings will impress people of all ages.” Ms Lentini graduated from RMIT University in 2012 with a bachelor of design (fashion) and since then has worked continuously as a freelance artist. Police seek dashcam clue to sex attack Police are hoping a review of dashcam footage from private vehicles could hold a clue to catching the man responsible for a “horrific” sexual assault last month. A 16-year-old Roxburgh Park girl was sexually assaulted in her bed by a stranger, who entered her family house through a kitchen window on February 26. Detective Senior Sergeant Jason Walsh, of the sexual crimes squad, said the teenager woke to find the man kneeling beside her bed. He then got into her bed and sexually assaulted her before forcing her into the bathroom. He fled through a bedroom window about 7.40am. “It’s a horrific crime,” Detective Senior Sergeant Walsh said. “The whole family is really traumatised.” He said CCTV footage from several nearby houses showed a man walking around for some time after the incident. “The footage shows him walking past several people, who we believe may be able to assist our investigation,” Detective Senior Sergeant Walsh said. Detectives are also urging anyone driving in the area on the morning of February 26 to review their dashcam footage and contact police if they believe it could assist their investigation. The man is described as 170 centimetres tall with a thin, muscular build, aged in his 20s and clean shaven. He spoke with an Australian accent and had an unusual walk. A Tullamarine business owner has been charged with multiple counts of drug trafficking and possession as well as possessing a handgun and ammunition, and possessing proceeds of crime. Police told Melbourne Magistrates Court that 55 grams of drugs, including 10 grams of ice in a chip packet in a cupboard, a semi-automatic gun and $40,000 was found at Sukru Akbulut’s Tullamarine company. Magistrate Kay Robertson granted Akbulut, 51, bail with a $10,000 surety on the condition he report twice a week to police and abide by a 10pm to 6am curfew.

Police executed a search warrant in Hayfield Road, Roxburgh Park, last Thursday morning as part of an operation targeting illicit drug trafficking in Melbourne’s north-west. The house was one of six addresses searched. The others were in Braybrook, Sunshine, Albion and Altona North. Cash, heroin, methylamphetamine, cannabis, methadone and a pill press were seized and five people were arrested.

Brickie jailed for armed robbery

By Alexandra Laskie One mother’s close call at a dangerous Whittlesea intersection has led her to collect more than 1000 signatures in a bid to make it safer. Kris Richmond was walking across Plenty Road near Whittlesea Primary School when she was nearly struck by a car. “It was an inch from my body,” she said. “If I’d had my pram with me, I would have lost my children.” The close encounter prompted the mother of four to petition Whittlesea council to install traffic lights at the busy intersections of Wallan and Plenty roads, and Macmeikan and Laurel streets. “The [Plenty Road] crossing is too busy for children,” Ms Richmond said. “I’ve seen kids crossing the road and, instead of stopping, cars swerve towards the stockfeed yards.” Along with the school council, Whittlesea Primary School principal Bente Stock tried to have traffic lights installed almost five years ago. “But of course, nothing happened because there hasn’t been a fatality there,” Ms Richmond said. So far, 1052 people have signed the petition. It has also been endorsed by federal McEwen MP Rob Mitchell, who described the intersection as traffic chaos. “The intersection is one of the main entry and exit points for the students, parents and teachers of Whittlesea Primary School, and many are fearful of the unsafe conditions,” Mr Mitchell said. He said the safety of school crossing supervisors had also been put at risk. One supervisor now suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder after nearly being hit by a car. Ms Richmond says she’s so traumatised she

can’t go near Wallan Road without crying. Following receipt of the petition, council officers are preparing a report to be tabled at the council’s April 5 meeting. VicRoads’ metro north-west acting regional director Bryan Sherritt admitted safety improvements were needed at the intersection. He said VicRoads had been in regular talks

with Whittlesea council about taking a number of short-term safety measures. “These improvements may include upgrading signage, line marking and closing a break in a central traffic island on Wallan Road,” he said. “As a longer-term solution, we are also investigating the potential of installing traffic lights or a roundabout at the intersection.”

A Craigieburn bricklayer has been jailed for his role in a 48-hour armed robbery spree across the north-west. In the County Court, Ngalo Fosita, 20, pleaded guilty to three charges of armed robbery, one charge of attempted armed robbery and two charges of theft. A sentencing hearing on February 2 heard that Fosita and his three co-accused held up a 7-Eleven store in Sydney Road, Campbellfield, on May 30 last year after stealing a Ford Territory, valued at $45,000, from Brooklyn. Wearing hoods, gloves and masks, the four backed the stolen car through the front doors, stealing $253.20 from the register, as well as three trays of cigarette cartons and $130 from a customer. Later they stole $200 from a cash register at Coles Express in Pascoe Vale about 3.30am. The car, destroyed by fire, was later found by police at Sunshine. The next night, the group stole a Nissan Skyline to drive to a Caltex service station at Glenroy, where they stole $1200 cash. This car was also gutted by fire. Judge Peter Kidd described the offences as serious, but conceded Fosita’s role was “limited”, despite him brandishing a knife on each occasion. “There is no evidence that you were the ringleader or instigator,” Judge Kidd said. Farmhouse plan wins support Whittlesea council has thrown its support behind a plan to develop a large parcel of land in Donnybrook and Woodstock for a future residential population of about 46,000 people. The council has made a submission to a draft Metropolitan Planning Authority plan called the Donnybrook Woodstock Precinct Structure Plan. The council submission outlines its support and recommendations. The land covers 1786 hectares and is bound by Donnybrook Road, the E6 road reservation, the Melbourne-Sydney railway and Merriang Road. In front of a packed council chamber last Tuesday, councillors addressed one of the final obstacles to the project – debating the merits of revisiting the sizes of two planned retail spaces. One is north of Cameron Street with a proposed allocation of 6700-square-metres of retail and commercial floor space. The other is at Donnybrook Farmhouse, owned by the Monteleone family, with a proposed allocation of 1000-square metres of retail floor space. In its submission to the precinct structure plan, the Monteleone family requested the authority reduce the retail provision at Cameron Street to 1000 square metres and increase the family’s farmhouse’s retail area to 5000 square metres. Caz Monteleone said the submission was not motivated by financial gain but was instead about creating a viable community precinct. “It’s about delivering a supermarket that’s viable,” he said.

Councillors agreed to recommend that the authority review the allocation of retail floor-space. Mr Monteleone said the family was delighted with the council’s recommendations. “Good governance and common sense prevailed,” he said. The Monteleones want to develop their Donnybrook Cheese Farm and restaurant businesses into a facility akin to Farm Vigano in South Morang or the Collingwood Children’s Farm.

MPA chief executive Peter Seamer said the authority’s role was to balance the range of competing objectives in favour of the best urban outcome for the future community. “We take into account the various considerations of affected parties, but don’t plan having regard to the financial interests of individual landholders,” he said. When completed, the plan will guide the development of about 16,400 dwellings, housing about 46,000 people, and is tipped to deliver more than 3000 local jobs. A directions hearing before a Metropolitan Planning Authority-appointed independent panel has been scheduled for April 7. Panel hearings will begin on May 16 to discuss any unresolved submissions.

Tradies making tool theft easy By Alexandra Laskie Tool theft is rife in Hume, but police say tradies are their own worst enemies when it comes to fuelling the crime. Police statistics reveal Hume is the thirdworst area in the state for prevalence of tool theft, preceded only by Greater Geelong and Casey. Sergeant Cam Ryan, of the Hume criminal investigation unit at Broadmeadows, said the drug ice was fuelling a lot of burglaries, but tradesmen were also to blame.

â€œThe tradesmen are the ones buying cheap tools off the crooks,â€? he said. â€œItâ€™s them buying the tools that fuels the crimes. Theyâ€™re creating a rod for their own back.â€? New Crime Statistics Agency (CSA) data reveals that 298 thefts of tools from vehicles were reported in Hume in the 12 months to September last year. Greater Geelong had 336 recorded offences; Casey had 322. In the same period, 199 instances of stolen tools were recorded in Whittlesea. The data cites the value of the tools stolen in Hume in that 12-month period as more than

$541,000 â€“ up from just over $495,000 the previous year. The average value of tools stolen in a single haul was more than $1816, slightly down from a loss valued at $1950 the previous year. The CSAâ€™s figures reveal that tools valued at more than $11 million were stolen across Victoria in the same 12 months, to last September 30. Detective Sergeant Peter Griffiths, also of Hume CIU, said tradesmen could take steps to prevent their equipment being stolen, such as painting it bright pink or engraving

their driverâ€™s licence number onto each item. â€œAnd if they see someone approach a worksite selling tools â€Ś politely decline and take down their registration plate,â€? he advised. Master Builders Association of Victoria chief executive Radley de Silva said stolen tools were taking a heavy toll on builders, particularly in smaller businesses, and on apprentices who couldnâ€™t afford to readily replace their losses. A recent police blitz, Operation Tool Safe, targeted the issue of theft on building sites across Melbourneâ€™s north and west, offering information about how best to keep tools safe.

Walk the talk for autism When a charity walk to raise awareness about autism drew hundreds of people to Mill Park last year, organiser Natasha Brearley-Ngarua decided the event should be held yearly. Sheâ€™s now in the final stages of planning the next walk on April 3. â€œWe were so surprised by last yearâ€™s turnout,â€? Ms Brearley-Ngarua recalls. â€œWe thought weâ€™d get 50 [entrants], but we had hundreds of people.â€? The South Morang mother of four has three children with autism and has been a strong advocate for funding to provide greater support in schools for children with special needs. Almost two years ago she started a petition that called on all levels of government to fund integration aides and teacher training in government schools. It was signed by more than 2000 people and led her to start Plenty Valley Club House, a

not-for-profit support group for Whittlesea families with children on the autism spectrum. Ms Brearley-Ngarua said the aim of the walk was to raise awareness of autism, and to show parents what support services are available to them and their children. Question time Dispelling the myths of Catholic Schools

or generations, Catholic schools have taught students about cultural myths. Like those from a bygone era involving the Ancient Greeks’ Medusa and minotaurs. While education on these myths is happening inside the classroom, Catholic schools are now finding themselves teaching the wider community about some cultural myths that hit closer to home: the myths about themselves. Here’s what Melbourne Catholic schools had to say about some of the most common Catholic school myths.

Mary Farah, the principal of St Aloysius College, North Melbourne, says Catholic schools emphasise opening doors to students from all religious and non-denominational backgrounds. “At St Aloysius College we celebrate the diversity of our students.”

Catholic education is too expensive

Actually, if you do the sums, Catholic schools are some of the most affordable (when compared to other private schools) across Melbourne. Students only learn about religion

Catholic schools have a wide curriculum that covers everything from maths and science to arts and music and beyond. While religion is part of the syllabus, students learn strong values of social justice, volunteering and

generally about being a good person who gives back to their community. Dr Susan Stevens, principal at Loreto Toorak, says students are offered a Catholic education that liberates, empowers and motivates students. “Our aim is to challenge and inspire our students in both the heart and the mind.”

Catholic schools have a mix of educators bringing wide-ranging life and educational experiences – such as at Loreto Toorak, where, Dr Stevens says, “there are no longer any Loreto sisters on the teaching staff.” “Our staff is wholly committed to our values and to educating women who will work towards positive social change.”

Catholic schools are ‘old-fashioned’

De La Salle College deputy principal (students) Lisa Harkin says Catholic students, like others across Melbourne, are called to confront life’s challenges. “Our students are challenged to be critical thinkers and discerning consumers of popular culture. In our midst, we have individuals who are grappling with deep, personal crises and as a community we support them.”

This year’s speakers will include Prue Kenny, a Sacred Heart College alumna who is a legal counsel with World Vision Australia. She has interned for the United Nations war crimes tribunal for Rwanda and is studying her masters of laws at the University of Melbourne. As well as the events for students, some events will be open to the public. They include a visual arts exhibition, which Mr Elder says provides a thought-provoking window into creative and artistic minds of Catholic students of all ages and in all forms of media.

“The collective talent of our students never ceases to amaze,” Mr Elder says. “Having been able to sample some of the work already, I can promise you it is a must-see for all Catholic school families.” As well as the main events program in and around Melbourne’s CBD, Catholic schools across the city will also celebrate. Mr Elder urges families to get involved. “Parents and families are encouraged to join in at a local school level as Catholic education celebrates the rich tradition and the exciting future of Catholic schools right across the Archdiocese of Melbourne,” he says. ext week, March 13-20, is Catholic Education Week. Catholic schools across Melbourne will celebrate their faith, education and their communities. This year marks the 14th Melbourne Catholic Education Week. A host of events will be open to the public and students, and schools will hold their own celebrations of education. The theme of this year’s week is “be the face of mercy”, inspired by Pope Francis’ declaration of 2016 as the Holy Year of Mercy. Executive director of Catholic education Stephen Elder says the religious centrepiece of the festivities will be the Mass of St Patrick for Schools. It will be held on St Patrick’s Day, Thursday, March 17. “Led by Celtic Irish pipers, all 331 [Catholic] primary and secondary schools are invited to proudly fly their schools’ colours through the streets of Melbourne to St Patrick’s Cathedral, where Archbishop Denis Hart will lead a celebration of the Eucharist,” Mr Elder says. Following the mass, there will be a concert at the Treasury Gardens for students and the public. “Two thousand primary and secondary students descend on the gardens to share a picnic lunch, make new friends, dance to a number of student bands on the main stage and partake in a host of fun activities,” Mr Elder says. Another of the week’s Melbourne highlights will be The Young Speakers Colloquium. It will give year 10 students the chance to hear from Catholic school graduates about their successes after finishing high school. “[It] provides Catholic secondary school students with the opportunity to hear personal

Buying “off-the-plan” can offer much potential but buyers need to be cautious before signing on the dotted line, according to the Victorian state manager of Archicentre, David Hallett. Mr Hallett said a big issue for buyers was interpreting the plan and understanding what they were agreeing to buy without seeing it in the flesh. “Even more important is which way will the living areas face? Will they attract sunlight? Will the view be across a park or the bay as featured in the brochure, or will you be looking straight at the wall a few metres away of the high rise building next door?” Mr Hallett said. Buying an apartment will differ to buying a suburban house. It is important to ensure every detail about the dimensions of the property, window placement and fixtures are clearly understood. “These inspections assist the apartment buyer to establish many basics, such as whether the display unit they are being shown is the standard unit or a premium unit with upgraded kitchen and bathroom appliances and fittings,” Mr Hallett said. “Even the standard of tiling and the number of coats of paint need to be determined.” Mr Hallett said off-the-plan buyers should also look into communal facilities within the apartment building and determine exact body corporate costs. “The heights of ceilings in off-the-plan buying is a key issue, especially as the floor space is usually comparatively small when compared to a house,” he said. “It is important to have the same measurements which are in the display unit written into the contract of sale for the apartment being purchased.” Buyers should also have a solid

Old foes line up again

By Tara Murray Chanaka Welegedara made an instant impression in his first season with Westmeadows Cricket Club. While the club knew they were getting a star bowler – Welegedara played 21 Test matches for Sri Lanka – the left-armer’s leadership and attitude were a bonus. Warriors’ president Paul Lloyd said the club was impressed by everything the player had brought to the club. “He has impressed us with his dedication,” he said. “He’s a motivated individual and has been a real breath of fresh air. “Everyone has enjoyed listening to his stories.” Such has been Welegedara’s impact that he has been appointed captain-coach for next season. “He has an appetite to coach,” Lloyd said. “He hasn’t coached before but he captained Tamil Union back in Sri Lanka. “It’s a good opportunity for others to learn the craft off him.” Lloyd said that he was hopeful this year’s captain-coach Danny Law would remain at the club. “Danny is part of the fabric of the club but has had a fair few work commitments this season,” he said. “He has had three years in charge and we think it’s time for a change.” After relegation last season, the Warriors finished seventh in Victorian Turf Cricket’s north A1 division. “It was definitely a disappointing season,” Lloyd said. “We had injuries early on and you need to get early wins. “We were also hurt by a lack of depth and we weren’t consistent enough with the bat.”

Craigieburn and Edinburgh will do battle in a grand final for the second time this season in the CV women’s Community Cricket north-west division. The pair met in the T20 grand final earlier in the season and on Saturday both won through to the one-day decider. Edinburgh won the T20 grand final easily. But Craigieburn will take some confidence into next Saturday’s match knowing they are the only team to beat Edinburgh this season and have also tied with them. Craigieburn, which finished third on the ladder, reached the one-day grand final by beating higher-ranked Geelong at Belmont Common Reserve. Chasing Geelong’s total of 6-140 from 40 overs, Craigieburn got the runs with seven wickets and 15 balls in hand. Craigieburn shared the wickets around, five bowlers taking one each with one run-out. Skipper Rebecca Lines top-scored in Craigieburn’s chase, making 37. Dianna Cachia made 35 and Litara Va’auli was 33 not out. Edinburgh defeated Altona Roosters by seven wickets in the other semi final, easily chasing down the Roosters’ total of 99. Craigieburn last won the one-day title in the 2013-14 season. SPORT Not all gloom as Greenvale bows out of Premier comp A tough season on the field for Greenvale Kangaroos has brought their Victorian Premier Cricket season to an end with some hard lessons for an inexperienced group likely to bring benefits in future years. The young and inexperienced Kangaroos racked up just a solitary win. For coach Stan Nell, while the season was painful, he hopes the experience will hold the young side in good stead. “It was a pretty tough year, if I’m to be honest,” Nell said. “But I think we’re taking steps forward with player development. “We’ve identified a core group who played in the first 11 this season – 14 or 15 of them. And in the seconds, thirds and fourths, we have a

really good group of about 20 young players. If we can keep them together, we’ll develop them for first 11 cricket.” Nell, in his first season as head coach, said it had been hard at times to make the decisions needed for the long term. “We identified players we think are first 11 material and gave them opportunities before they may have been ready for it. “That’s not easy as a coach, but we’ve established a base for the future and if you want to build a side you need to bite the bullet. “I’m looking forward to next year, to a lot of good things ahead. Hopefully, we can recruit a couple of experienced players.” It wasn’t all doom and gloom for the

Kangaroos, with several players making the most of their opportunities, “Adam Amin played his first full year in the firsts and made 496 runs,” Nell said. “He’s only 18 and has been a huge plus for us. I have a lot of faith in him. “Trent Waring took 33 wickets in the firsts and seconds and has done well, while Josh Trembearth had a good patch in the firsts with 50s against the top two sides, which shows he can play,” the coach added. “They [Amin, Waring and Trembearth] weren’t in contention for first 11 cricket last season.” The end of a disappointing season for the Kangaroos came at the hands of Dandenong,

which easily accounted for Greenvale. Needing 253 for victory, the Kangaroos were skittled for 105. Only Harry Dearden, with 47, was able to muster any resistance. In their second innings, the Kangaroos were 4-169 at stumps. Dearden backed up with 56 in the second dig, while Amin made 79. “Our inexperience showed through in both innings,” Nell said. “In the second, we were 0-136. Our top three batsmen are [aged] 18 … they will be better for the experience. “Experience is one thing I can’t buy for them. We have to be patient.” Tara Murray

Kangaroos skip into final By Tara Murray The turnaround in fortunes for Greenvale Kangaroos is complete, with the Roos through to the Victorian Turf Cricket Association senior division grand final. Only South Caulfield stands in the way of Greenvale and the top division premiership, just a year on from the threat of relegation. The Kangaroos showed their improvement with both bat and ball at the weekend, easily accounting for Doutta Stars. Winning the toss, the Kangaroos chose to bat, and they came out ready for action. For Kangaroos’ captain Jonathan Kent, it was exactly the start the side needed. “Tarek [Moughanie] started aggressively, and we’ve moved CJ [Chinthaka Jayasinghe] up the order the last couple of games in order to help us get off to good starts,” Kent said. “Tallan [Wright] and I batted well in the middle order, with Tallan getting himself a 50. 24 NORTHERN STAR WEEKLY \ MARCH 8, 2016

It was good that we could bat all the way down.” The Kangaroos posted a more than respectable 269, Moughanie leading the way with 72 and Wright with 51. Kent said that despite the Stars’ strong batting line-up, the Kangaroos were confident of defending the total. “The pitch wasn’t easy to bat on. “We knew it was a good score to have put on the board.” The Kangaroos’ fast bowlers then did the job, restricting the Stars to 175. “We had to bowl tightly, put them in the right areas,” Kent said. “Peter [Manser] bowled really well, taking seven wickets. I only had to use three bowlers. Jacob Thompson kept it tight and Peter and Tallan attacked at the other end. “Peter is a former North Melbourne player, and Jacob and Tallan are Greenvale juniors. ” After securing first innings points, the

Kangaroos were shocked to be sent back in to bat. They made 3-103 in their second innings before the Stars conceded. Moughanie was again on fire with the bat, making 47. The Kangaroos now face South Caulfield in the final over the next two weekends. South Caulfield made the grand final by defeating two-time reigning premiers Yarraville Club. “They’re a very strong team, losing only one game for the season,” Kent said. “We played really well against them and weren’t at full strength. “We are an improved side. We won’t be overawed by it at all,” he said. “Most of us have played in grand finals and a lot of the team was in the senior grand final four years ago. “We fell short that time … we’re hoping for a win this time.”

Whittlesea Pacers are hoping a little bit of luck and a better start to the season will change their fortunes in the Big V men’s state championship. The Pacers have been slow starters the past two years, the cost being they just missed playing finals. Pacers’ coach Ross Moll said the club approached this pre-season differently. “I looked at what we did and how we went about it the last couple of years,” Moll said last week. “We’ve played a few more practice games than previously. “Having the majority of the same group together will help as well. The last couple of years, we’ve lost key players to season-ending injuries. Hopefully, our luck changes.” The Pacers have much the same line-up as last year. Gavin Mitchell and Steve Dahlstrom are among those who have retired, while import Jermaine Williams isn’t returning. The club last week reached agreement with American Chris Kaba to come on board as the club’s main import. “He is a six-foot, eight-inch forward who schooled at the University of North Colorado,” Moll said. “He has previously played in Mexico. “From what I’ve seen, he has an ability to score inside and outside. He is athletic and helps out of the rebounds. “We worked out he was the best fit for us. I like what I saw.” And the Pacers signed a second US import in Ron Lucas. “He paid his own way out to Australia and tried out with a number of teams,” Moll said. “He trained with us … no guarantees, and he worked his way into the squad. “He’s a guard who brings something different to the game.” The club has also signed Matt Bongetti from Waverley, while Jake Dunstan comes up from the youth squad. Moll is hopeful Jason Dirkx will return to the court at some point this season. “Jason is coming back from a knee reconstruction. Hopefully, he hits the court in the second half of the season, but there’s no time frame on that.” The Pacers kick off on March 19 against Hume City. “I think this year the competition will be a lot tighter … from fourth to 10th could be separated by one to two games” Moll said. In-form Hume keeps up the good work Hume City’s strong early-season form continued on Saturday night with a draw against Bentleigh Greens in the NPL. Both sides had won their opening two matches and they could not be split at the final whistle in a 0-0 draw. City coach Louie Acevski said the result did not reflect the match. “I thought we were the better team on the night,” he said. “We just didn’t make the most of the scoring opportunities. “If the score had have finished 2-0 no one would have questioned it. “We’re creating opportunities, which is a good start. “And it’s not a sprint, it’s a marathon.” After a late start to the pre-season Acevski had low expectations for the first six weeks but is pleased with his side’s performance. “We’re getting better each week and we want to get as many points as possible in the

six week period to start the season,” he said. “I think Bentleigh are one of the top two sides in the competition. “Like us, they’ll get better. We just have a few guys who need to get match fit to help us get our game to where we want it.” The club is also waiting for English striker Tom Cahill to get a visa so he can make his debut with them. Saturday marked goalkeeper Chris Oldfield’s 100th game for Hume, topping off a big week for him after his wife gave birth to twins. “We hope he plays another 100 games for us,” Acevski said. City is third on the ladder behind South Melbourne and Bentleigh. After draws in the first two matches, Whittlesea Ranges scored their first win of the NPL2 west season against Sunshine George Cross on Saturday.

Ranges led 3-0 at half-time and although the second half was a lot quieter, with neither team having many opportunities, the damage had already been done. Atila Ofli’s good early-season form continued with two goals, taking his tally to five. Stefan Baricevic was the other scorer. Meanwhile, Sporting Whittlesea was knocked out in the FFA Cup on Saturday, going down on penalties to Melton Phoenix. Sporting led 2-0 at half-time but Phoenix hit back in the second half to level the scores at 2-2 at the end of regular time. Both teams scored once in extra time before Phoenix won 4-3 on penalties. Favourites cruise into grand final Rivergum’s quest for a third straight North Metro Cricket Association Jika Shield premiership is on track, with the Kookaburras the first side through to the grand final. After losing only one game for the season, the Kookaburras were favourites going into the weekend’s semi-final against Northcote United at Kelynack Reserve and did not disappoint. Sent in by Northcote United, Rivergum made 188 on the first day on Saturday. United lost one wicket before stumps in reply and on Sunday never got close to the target – bowled out for 135. Meanwhile, Lalor Warriors’ season came to an end with yet another disappointing batting display. After struggling with the bat for much of the second half of the season, it was the same story again for the Warriors against North Brunswick/Rosebank at Lalor Reserve. Nick Christie top-scored with 30, but there was little support and the innings ended on 142. The Warriors gave themselves some hope by taking two wickets when Rosebank began their reply late on Saturday. And although Rosebank started day two on Sunday at 2-9, they made the chase look easy to finish on 5-144. Christie was the best of the Lalor bowlers, taking 3-23 off 21 overs. Bats draw on experience By Tara Murray The cream rose to the top when it mattered most for Plenty Valley in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association north-east division. In their qualifying final against Kew, the Bats drew on their past finals experience performing to perfection to secure a home semi-final. Bats coach Michael Sheedy said his side had focused on putting in a strong team effort. “We understood what we needed to do to take time out of the game,” he said. “We made sure we built partnerships and that’s what wins finals. “We’ve played 10 finals in four years and that experience has come to fruition again today.” Kew won the toss and elected to bat, setting the Bats 229 for victory. “I thought it was a good wicket to bat on,” Sheedy said. “They batted well – I think they may have achieved what they had been hoping for.

“[But] I knew if we could bat well, we could get the runs.” Veteran Sean Ayres took 5-57 off 33 overs. His impact on the game was not just with the ball – he returned to the role of opening batsman and made 41 to set up the Bat’s run chase. “He bowled 33 overs on the bounce,” Sheedy said. “We made it clear during the week that we wanted him to have an impact with the bat, like the last couple of years. That was at the top of the order. “It was more about the cream rises to the top and Sean keeps putting his hand up. “He thrives on finals cricket … he loves it so much.” Ayres partnered with Simon Bray, who went on to make 74. “Simon played out of his skin,” Sheedy said. “I was so pleased with the partnership between the two of them. I knew we had the batting depth, with Daniel Shaw batting at No.8. He

and [skipper] Brad Mitchell got us over the line in the end.” The Bats reached 229 for the loss of six wickets with nearly four overs to spare. Sheedy paid tribute to Mitchell, who struggled with illness. “He was quite ill – he batted at No.7 instead of his normal spot,” the coach said. “He probably shouldn’t have played but lasted 80 overs in the field and then batted. I’m proud how he fought through it.” The Bats will play Mt Waverley in the semi-finals for a spot in the grand final. “They’ve been a yard stick all season and they will be wounded after losing their last two games,” said Sheedy of Mt Waverley. “For us, winning form is good form. “It’s encouraging for a home semi-final and potential home ground final. I’m not shying away from it.” It was a good weekend for the club, with four sides progressing through to semi-finals.

Old Paradians/St Francis are out of the Diamond Valley Cricket Association’s Barclay Shield finals after losing to Macleod on Sunday. Entering the finals full of confidence after late regular-season wins moved them to third on the ladder, the Wolves were on the back foot for most of the semi-final. After losing an early wicket, Macleod settled, eventually posting 9-245 off its 80 overs. Udhara Hewa Wellalage took 4-37 and Damian Wegener 3-32 for the Wolves. The Wolves started their innings well, with five of their top six batsmen making starts – but none could go on with the job. At 2-104, the Wovles looked on track to put in a good push for the target but then lost wickets regularly for the rest of the innings. They were bowled out for 190. Matthew Del Mastro top-scored at the top of the order with 52. Hewa Wellalage, batting at No.8, chipped in with 37. Macleod will face Diamond Creek in the grand final. Diamond Creek made a modest 127 with the bat but that proved sufficient as it went on to bowl Riverside out for 109. Lalor Stars are out of the second-grade Money Shield competition after losing to North Eltham Wanderers in the semi-finals. The Wanderers will play Lower Plenty in the grand final.
