Bacchus Marsh to march By Ewen McRae The Bacchus Marsh community will take to the streets this week, with concerns over contaminated soil continuing to rise. A rally has been organised for March 10 at the Village Green to protest a proposal from Maddingley Brown Coal (MBC) to store and process contaminated soil from the West gate Tunnel Project. It follows a similar march in Werribee last week, during which hundreds of residents protested plans to store conaminated soil at a Wyndham Vale stabling yard.
The rally has been organised by the Bacchus Marsh Community Coalition, and group member Kat Barlow said they would not be silenced “We need to be screaming from the rooftops,“ Ms Barlow said. “It’s absolutely beyond preposterous what they have planned. We want to march down the avenue … we will have speakers, and we want our voices heard. “It’s going to be a noisier display of our absolute horror of what we’re told is going to happen.” Maddingley Brown Coal and Transurban released a series of responses to questions from
Moorabool council last week, stating the level of contamination in the soil was likely to be low. However Ms Barlow said the responses did little to allay concerns in the community. “We’re an educated community that knows all too well the impact of PFAS, and we’re being patted on the head,” Ms Barlow said. “If the soil is contaminated enough to stop them digging, and they have everyone on site wearing hazmat suits, it can’t possibly be the low levels they’re describing. “If I was Transurban or the EPA, and there were low level results in the soil, I would be parading them on every newspaper available to
placate a community. The fact is they don’t have that, all they have is expected levels “[Premier] Dan Andrews’ silence means he is complicit in the destruction of an entire community … how can they sit back and know the effects of PFAS, and still damn our community to that life? “We don’t want this to go to Wyndham either, and we’re all in this together and working together to ensure this soil doesn’t go anywhere near a community and destroy a community.” ■ MBC

Moorabool ponders cat curfew Moorabool council is considering introducing a cat curfew within the municipality, with a proposal now out for community consultation. The council has undertaken a feasibility study into a sunset to sunrise curfew, with an early round of consultation in 2019 showing strong support for a curfew. In the 2019 consultation, 78 per cent of responders were in favour of a cat curfew, largely to protect native wildlife, however 39 per cent of cat owners who responded said they

would be unlikely to comply with a night time curfew. Councillor Paul Tatchell opposed the motion to consult further on the proposal, saying a cat curfew was too hard to enforce in such a large and dispersed municipality. “I’m not against the policy, it’s more the
unintended consequences should this be implemented,â€? Cr Tatchell said. “We’ve seen in the city, a cat curfew working in concentrated areas, they’re easier to manage, but to try and manage it in Mooorabool would be incredibly expensive ‌ and trying to get compliance at the times that this would be operating would be a nightmare. “We’re not handling all the compliance that we’ve got on the table now, so why would we run the risk of introducing a new one when we can’t manage what we’ve got now? “These really are city policies.â€?
Under the proposal, a cat owner who is found to not be compliant would face a fine of $165 for a first offence, and $495 for subsequent offences. Councillor Jarrod Bingham spoke in favour of proceeding with consultation. “Cats are responsible for a lot of wildlife going extinct, so if we can contribute into wildlife conservation in some way I think this is a step forward, he said. Should council endorse the cat curfew l, it would likely come into effect on January 1, 2021.

Function centre knocked back By Ewen McRae Melton council has blocked a proposal for a function centre and group accommodation in Toolern Vale. The owners of Cornwall Park, a 278-hectare property on Diggers Rest-Coimadai Road, were applying to use a large building on the site as a function space for up to 150 people, as well as operating six properties on the site for visitor accommodation associated with the functions. The application said functions could include weddings, birthdays, community meetings,

’’
workshops and trade shows, while an equine business on the site would also continue to run. While council officers were supportive of the proposal, and recommended its approval, mayor Lara Carli raised concerns over inconsistencies between the proposal and the green wedge zone which covers part of the site,
as well as bushfire and noise concerns. “As a ward councillor, I’ve spoken to residents who could be affected by this proposal,” Cr Carli said. “To hear that there’s extra traffic coming through their small court to access this property is unacceptable. I don’t think any of us would want to live in a place where people are coming up to our door willy-nilly trying to figure out where they are, music blaring at all hours of the night, I think it’s unacceptable. “I don’t believe that a function centre at this site is appropriate.”
Cr Ken Hardy said the proposed function centre would have a number of benefits for the local region. “This encourages tourism in the Toolern Vale Hills,” Cr Hardy said. “The ability for Cornwall Park to be used as a future centre will enable the property to continue to function in a rural economy. That’s important. “We have 600 acres here, and if we’re not going to say yes to having a rural type economy on this farm, then where are we going to have it?”
Fete for the ages Residents of Burnside Retirement Village are gearing up for their biggest day of the year. The annual village fete and garage sale returns in March and organisers are promising a bigger and better show than ever. Organising committee member Marlene Gorman said with such a wide range of activities on offer, no one will leave disappointed “We’ll have raffles and a spinning wheel, trash and treasure, a white elephant stall and secondhand furniture,” Ms Gorman said. “There’s also going to be handmade crafts, accessories, manchester, plants, book stall and a variety of electrical goods tagged and tested.” Culinary delights – whether it be a famous Devonshire tea, a sauasage sizzle, homemade cakes or jams – will also prove to be crowd pleasers. Money raised from the fete goes back into the retirement village and funds social activities and new equipment for the community centre.
The fete, which has been known to attract up to 2000 people, will be held on Sunday, March 15 from 9am-3pm at 16 Nicol Avenue, Burnside. Ms Gorman encouraged everyone to make the most of the popular event. “Everyone is welcome to attend, meet our friendly residents, enjoy some good food and be entertained,” she said. “There will be plenty of children’s activities and parking available.” Tate Papworth

Questions answered, more remain By Ewen McRae Maddingley Brown Coal has responded to a series of questions from Moorabool council over its plans to accept toxic soil from the Westgate Tunnel Project, however several details are still being withheld. Under the MBC proposal, a truck carrying contaminated soil would be delivered to the site near Bacchus Marsh every six minutes, 24-hours a day, seven days a week. Contaminated soil will be stored, categorised and disposed of at the site, in proximity to local schools and market gardens.

council remains largely in the dark about the potential risks - David Edwards
’’
Moorabool council last week released the responses to 24 key questions the community had raised over the proposal, but is still yet to see nine technical assessments on environmental, socio-economic, amenity and traffic impacts. A response from Transurban and its partners said that as the proposal for soil management was still at the tender stage, it was not possible to release the technical data. “Due to the competitive process currently underway, we are not able to provide commercially sensitive material contained in the technical assessments,” the statement said. Moorabool mayor David Edwards said the community had a right to know what impact the proposal would have on the Bacchus Marsh township and surrounding farming. “Council has made it very clear that we are not interested in seeing any commercially sensitive material,” Cr Edwards said.

“We have even gone as far as offering to view redacted versions of these technical assessments where all commercially sensitive material has been blackened out. “The fact remains that without these technical assessments, council remains largely
in the dark about the potential risks for the community, as well as the actual impacts to our roads, our environment and our reputation as a major food provider for Melbourne.” In response to calls for community consultation, MBC began holding information
Þ« Ì iÀ>«Þ ÊÊÊÊ i «Ã
sessions in Bacchus Marsh last week, with the last of these to take place at the Darley Civic and Community Hub on March 12 from 3- 7pm. “MBC and the West Gate Tunnel Project parties welcome the opportunity during consultation to discuss any concerns regarding potential or perceived public health and safety risks with the community,” MBC’s response said. “We have met with Bacchus Marsh Grammar School and briefed the principal on the proposal, and will continue to make ourselves available to the school community.” The response went on to say that the levels of contamination in the soil were likely below what is already allowed at the MBC site, and that they would work closely with the Environmental Protection Authority to protect the surrounding environment. “In the very unlikely event that spoil cannot be disposed of at the MBC site, it will be taken to an approved facility for disposal or treatment in line with EPA requirements,” the response said. “Specialised drainage systems would be in place to collect any water that comes from the soil into EPA-approved, lined ponds that aren’t connected to the groundwater system. “MBC is proposing a robust solution for the management of any soil containing PFAS, including a protective liner and specialised drainage systems to capture any water from the spoil. This solution is designed to ensure that there is no impact from the spoil that would be received by MBC to water entering the Parwan Creek.” The MBC proposal is with Transurban, which will decide on its preferred site for the tunnel spoil. The decision will need to be ratified by the planning minister. View MBC’s full response: www.moorabool. vic.gov.au

Council says no to church By Ewen McRae Melton council has knocked back a permit for a church in an industrial area, saying it is an inappropriate site. Kingdom Life Ministries International has been holding services at a warehouse in Melton’s High Street industrial precinct for several months, and was seeking to legitimise the use by lodging a planning application for a place of assembly at the site. The group had been seeking approval for a maximum of 50 people to meet on the site on
weeknights and on Sundays, however nine objections were lodged, claiming the area wasn’t appropriate for such a meeting. Every objector raised concerns about children roaming around the industrial area unsupervised. Council planning services manager Bob Baggio recommended the council refuse the permit. “In recent years, council has noticed an increase in what we would call non-industrial uses wanting to operate in industrial areas,” Mr Baggio said.
“Often these uses can be appropriate … however in some case, particularly where the use is located, as is the case here, in a multi-tenanted site, conflict can result.” Deputy mayor Steve Abboushi tried to pass an alternate motion that would have approved the application with a number of stringent conditions, but his motion was defeated. “When places of worship go residential we have residents up in arms about places of worship in their street as their neighbours,” he said. “So they go and choose industrial areas because, for the majority of the time, they’re
not going to disturb people, and in my opinion that’s an appropriate location.” Councillor Sophie Ramsey agreed with council officers that the site was inappropriate. “The location has red flags all over it,” Cr Ramsey said. “It is located on one of our busiest roads, not far from one of our most dangerous intersections, it’s got industrial uses there that I don’t think are compatible with a church, and apart from that, it’s been operating without a permit and hasn’t responded to any of the conditions or concerns of the objectors in the immediate surrounds.”
Apprentice a real live wire Helping a friend has sparked a new career for Stefan Moskaljuk - and he has an award to go with it. The Diggers Rest resident was presented with the Electrical Apprentice of the Year award at Kangan Institute’s Industry Excellence Awards last month. Mr Moskaljuk enjoyed a 20-year career as a carpenter and a site supervisor before he was forced to explore a new career path when the company he worked for collapsed. “The electrical side of building was the only trade I had no experience in,” Mr Moskaljuk said. “When a friend asked me to help him out with managing a team of electricians on a commercial job site, I jumped at the chance to gain some experience.” This then led him to joining NRW Electrical Services as a mature-aged apprentice and undertaking a certificate III in electrotechnology electrician at Kangan
Institute in Broadmeadows. “Training at Kangan TAFE has helped me understand the theory and concepts behind electricity, how it works and how we, as electrical technicians, must follow guidelines, standards and safe work practices to make it safe for all who may come into contact with electrical devices,” Mr Moskaljuk said. “I am very humbled to have won apprentice of the year for my chosen field. I would like to thank the entire electrotechnology staff from the Broadmeadows campus for helping me to achieve this prestigious award. “I would also like to thank my employers for giving me an opportunity to pursue a career in the electrical industry and all their help when I was unsure. And lastly, my partner Natasha. For supporting me whilst I underwent this training to further enhance my career.” Jessica Micallef

Coronavirus: GPs left in the dark By Goya Dmytryshchak A leading doctor says GPs are not equipped to deal with a potential outbreak of coronavirus and is calling for “sentinel practices” to be established. It comes as Australia last week had its first death among confirmed cases of COVID-19, with more than 60 countries impacted and a new travel ban imposed on foreign nationals travelling from Iran to Australia. Altona North GP Mukesh Haikerwal said aside from some masks from the federal government, doctors had received little support for dealing with patients presenting with symptoms of the disease. “We’re not going to face the bullet without a bulletproof vest,” said the former Australian Medical Association president and World Medical Association council chair. “We feel quite unsupported in general practice land. “Everybody is telling us to receive patients, screen patients … and so on, but there’s been precious-little support. “No advice about what to do if we received a case and about cleaning the practice up after the case has been through – and you’ve got to keep the room empty – and a lack of understanding that if you shut down a couple of rooms you can decimate a practice. “I’d probably end up sending people to casualty rather than keeping them in your practice because you couldn’t afford not to run your practice.” A worker at a major Melbourne hospital said a lot of GPs did not want to take in suspected coronavirus patients and told patients to go to the emergency department, while the hospital was directing people to call the dedicated hotline on 1800 675 398.
Dr Haikerwal said clear messaging and material support for doctors was needed. “We want more concerted action so that we are not just saying nice things but actually are prepared if the worst does happen,” he said. “We need to be actively working through the scenario that this is upon us. “It may mean that certain practices are set up as what we call ‘sentinel practices’, that are geared up and prepared with gear and people and training so that they can take the load off the rest of the practices. “Even in hospitals, you wouldn’t just go to an emergency department in hospital; even in hospitals there need to be sentinel areas like that.”

She said the team had been developing contingency plans for responding to a “pandemic”. “Western Health has experts on staff who have many decades of expertise in responding to infectious disease outbreaks,” Ms Toohey said. “This is an evolving situation and we are monitoring and modifying our response to incorporate the best available evidence to keep patients, visitors, staff and volunteers safe.” – with Benjamin Millar

Carers hub trial for Melton By Ewen McRae Melton council will trial a carers hub in the town centre, with the goal of improving support and services for the local community. The council first considered the hub following a motion from councillor Kathy Majdlik in August 2019, which called on council officers to investigate whether it was a viable option in Melton. The hub was ticked off at last week’s council meeting, and will be established at 5 McKenzie Street for a trial 12 month period.
The council’s community services manager Maurie Heaney said they considered using Morton Homestead and Fraser Rise Community Centre for the hub, but the McKenzie Street site provided the best space. “This model would be complimentary to what is already occurring at that facility at the moment,” Mr Heaney said. Mr Heaney also said there could be opportunities to expand services from the hub to other regions of the municipality. A council report into the hub said council had been in discussions with Carers Victoria
on a partnership model, with the council supplying the location and Carers Victoria to fund the hub and any staffing. The hub is designed to provide a range of benefits to local carers and support services, including information, service provider referrals, event co-ordination, peer support, training, counselling services and NDIS and aged care assistance. Similar hubs have been operating successfully around the state, with Carers Victoria receiving a state government grant to set up approximately 400 hubs to meet growing
demand. Cr Sophie Ramsey said the hub would be an important addition to the Melton community. “I think this is a fantastic initiative, and I commend Cr Majdlic for bringing it forward,” she said. “Carers are our unsung heroes, and what they give for the community can’t ever be under estimated. To give them the opportunity to have some extra time out, and inform them, and give them the support they deserve ticks a lot of boxes.”
Circus comes to town Girl power will be on full show in Melton over the next two months, with International Women’s Day launching a bumper program of events. With the big day taking place last weekend, a special art exhibition is now on display at Melton Library which showcases local female artists and seeks to increase the visibility of women and acknowledge their contributions to the local community. The Equal Exhibition will be officially launched on March 12, and will include a panel discussion on women’s equality. The ‘Women’s Circus’ will also be holding special circus workshops in Melton and Caroline Springs later this month, and circus creative producer Devon Taylor will also chair the panel discussion at the exhibition launch this week. She said it was a thrill to be involved in such a diverse range of projects in the municipality.
“The group has been around since 1991 when we started as a community project working with women who were survivors of sexual abuse,” Ms Taylor said. “We now run a really comprehensive training program that supports about 200 people a year to learn circus skills and engage with the community, and it’s exciting to be out in the Melton community and doing what we do there.” The group will also run a life drawing class on May 8, and girl power circus workshops on March 30 (Melton) and April 3 (Caroline Springs). Ms Taylor said International Women’s Day and the surrounding events became more important every year. The block of about 1400 square metres means that there’s space here to fit another two dwellings, STCA, while the existing house is beautifully presented and packed with appeal. The three good-sized fitted bedrooms include the main with a walk-in robe, while the shared bathroom has a spa and the same glass splashbacks in the shower as in the kitchen; the toilet is separate. Floorboards anchor all bedrooms, as well as a lounge room which has a wall of exposed bricks rising to meet the angled ceiling. Adjoining the tiled meals zone, the kitchen is large and sleek, with loads of white 2pac cabinetry and granite-look benches, a dishwasher and a 900mm stainless-steel cooker. Heating, cooling, feature lightfittings and roller shutters are on board. A covered timber deck and a two-car shed finish a property that’s close to shops, schools and parklands.
On about 590 square metres in the Residential Growth Zone, this is a property with prime subdivision potential, STCA, offering future financial gains, and is also a great family abode. It’s in a top spot, within easy reach of Woodgrove Shopping Centre, all-level schools, medical centre and freeway entry. Five fitted bedrooms include the main with walk-in robe and en suite. The bathroom is a good size and decked out in powder-blue and white, and there’s also a powder room. A third toilet is off the laundry. The tiled living domain, with an archway defining zones, incorporates a spacious kitchen. An abundance of timber cupboards and bench space accompany a dishwasher, gas cooktop and wall oven. Ducted heating, multiple ceiling fans and two air-conditioners are included. A large covered deck links with a sizeable backyard, and there’s a double garage/workshop.

This modern abode, ready and waiting for new owners, is in the growing new suburb of Weir Views, close to a brand-new shopping complex and future government schools, while Melton South station and all-level schools are within easy reach. Generously proportioned, the house has the ever-popular grey-and-white palette, with white roller blinds on windows, and space for retreat and hang-together times. Entry is to a hallway, laid with floating floor planks which continue on to the spacious living domain at the back. On the way, they head past a carpeted open lounge room, ideal for adult retreat. The grey-carpeted main bedroom is first cab off the rank, with a walk-in robe and en suite with the same pale-grey woodgrain laminate cabinetry as in the larger bathroom and kitchen. The remaining three fitted bedrooms include one off the entry hall, and two others along another short hallway that they share with main bathroom and separate toilet. The living domain, with large windows admitting natural light from the north and east, incorporates the smart kitchen. This has an abundance of storage, including a french-door pantry, accompanied by a stone-topped island bench, a bold burnt-orange glass splashback, and a stainless-steel 900mm cooker. An integrated alfresco area, with concrete underfoot, looks out to back and side yards ready for gardens or personal projects. There’s also concrete behind the remote-controlled double garage. 13 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY Tuesday, 10 March, 2020

Season over for Titans
Sports shorts GDCA
By Tara Murray North Western Titans were left with mixed emotions after being knocked out of the Baseball Victoria women’s west division 3 finals. Having only won their first match in November and making massive inroads to contest their first finals series, the Titans were proud of their efforts. But there was also a case of ‘what might have been’, after losing the preliminary final to Fitzroy Lions 9-7. Titans president Danny Haymes said they felt they were the better team on Saturday, but couldn’t convert it to a win. “We beat ourselves, he said. “We out-hit them and we didn’t make as many errors as them. “They took their chances at the right time, most of them in the one hit. “We believed they deserved to win the game, so it hurts even more. Haymes said the one area that cost them was letting through too many walks in the third innings. While disappointed for the season to come to an end, Haymes said they couldn’t have felt prouder of the side. “The girls really fought it out and we couldn’t have asked for anything more,“ he said. “They played outstanding. “From where we started to where we are now, they are only going to get better and they’re already looking forward to next year. Haymes said the group now had confidence Jemma Rigby has really stepped up this season. SPORT Diggers Rest holds nerve in title decider Diggers Rest held its nerve to claim the Central Highlands Bowls Division division 2 title on Saturday. The Burras were the favourites heading into the final, having claimed the minor premiership, but they had to dig deep against Kyneton. After trailing early, the Burras came home strong to win 79 shots to 60, winning all three rinks along the way. Ross Grant’s rink won 28-24, Bob Reidy’s won 23-19 and Mark Clohesy’s rink won 28-17. Burras president Bill Deeble said it was exciting for the group, which celebrated long into the night. He said he wasn’t sure the last time the club won a premiership, but thought it was at least 10 years ago, in the club’s early days. “They were pretty confident going up there,”
Diggers Rest division 2 premiership winners. (Supplied)
he said. “We were behind in the first half of the game, but were able to come out on top eventually. It was a good game against a good side, with all three rinks winning.” Deeble said they had set their sights on a
premiership this year, after missing finals last season. After losing their first two games, the Burras would lose just one more for the rest of the season. The Burras are now likely be promoted to division 1. The last time the Burras were in division 1, a number of years ago, they failed to win a game. Deeble said that would be the first goal for the club next season. “It’s a new challenge for the club,” he said. “We never won a game, so that will be the first step and to stay up there will be a challenge. “There’s some pretty experienced bowlers in division 1, we will do our best.” Deeble said anyone who wanted to join the Burras should come down to their barefoot bowls sessions which run on Friday nights. In the division 1 grand final, Kyneton beat
Lancefield, 93 (14)-86 (4). In division 3, Trentham beat Lancefield 64-57, winning two of the three rinks. In Bowls Victoria pennant action, Bacchus Marsh suffered a last round loss to Deer Park 2 in division 2, section 1. Already assured second spot, Bacchus Marsh had little to play for in the final round, losing 81 (14)-74 (4). The two teams will face each other in a semi-final at Bacchus Marsh on Saturday. In section 2, Melton finished the regular season with a win against Moonee Ponds, 101 (16)-70 (2). Melton, which finished the regular season in third, will face FlemingtonKensington in a semi-final on Saturday. The grand finals will be held on Sunday. Tara Murray

NAB League thriller Connor Pain scored a second-half goal for Western United. (Luke Hemer) 200783_31
United soars into top six By Lance Jenkinson The complexion of Western United’s inaugural A-League season has changed for the better all of a sudden. Scoring 11 goals in two weeks will do that for you, with massive back-to-back wins elevating United back into the top six. United coach Mark Rudan heard all the detractors following a loss to Wellington Phoenix three weeks ago, but kept his faith in the playing group and trusted that they would come through better for experiencing a rough patch in the season. Thumping wins to open March, a 6-2 home thrashing of Central Coast Mariners on the first day of the month, followed by 5-1 hammering of Adelaide United away on Saturday night, has turned United’s season around. Suddenly, confidence has lifted for United and finals is back on the agenda. “I’m happy because the players executed the game plan to perfection,” Rudan said. “I’ve got a lot of confidence and belief in this group.”
Besart Berisha kick-started the five-goal dream for Western United in the city of churches. In the 18th minute, the veteran striker was the beneficiary of a spectacular team build-up, which started with a diagonal ball from Alessandro Diamanti that connected with Josh Risdon in stride, who, in turn, squared it to Berisha for a neat finish. Seven minutes later, Adelaide United was on level terms, when Riley McGree fired past United substitute goalkeeper Ryan Scott, who came on for a concussed Filip Kurto. It was a crossroads moment in the match for Western United. Rudan was pleased with his side’s response. “We’ve been working on our mindset and making sure we turn on and switch on again [after conceding a goal], that it’s not the end of the world and we continue playing positive football,” he said. “They flicked that switch, they stayed positive and we were able to get that second and third [goals in the first half] and that was important.” Western United scored two goals in six
minutes before half-time to wrestle back control. Alessandro Diamanti found himself in space in the 32nd minute after he was put in by a Max Burgess through ball and tucked home from close range. Burgess, a hat-trick hero last week, found the back of the net himself in the 38th minute, scoring with a header. After 44 games without a goal, the midfielder has four goals in two games and is one of the main reasons why United’s season is no longer on life support. United put the game well out of reach of the hosts in the second half with goals to winger Connor Pain, three minutes after the resumption of play, and a second to Berisha, in the 56th minute. Berisha’s goal was assisted by Risdon, who had three assists for the game. Instead of going into this weekend’s bye counting down the days until the end of the season, Western United is buoyed by itsrecent form and ready to challenge for a finals berth in their final six games of the season.
Western Jets and the Murray Bushrangers played out a thrilling draw in the NAB League Girls competition on Saturday. Looking to captialise on a strong round one performance, the Jets were pushed throughout by the Bushrangers, in what would be a low-scoring affair. Scores were level at the first two breaks, with the sides kicking three goals each. The Bushrangers scored in the third quarter, adding 1.1 to take a seven-point lead into the last change. The Knights kicked a point early in the final quarter to bring the margin back to a goal. Caitilin Sargent kicked a goal in the 10th minute of the last quarter to level the scores. Neither team could find the winning kick, with scores finishing 4.3 (27) apiece. Sargent and Laura Elliott kicked two goals apiece for the Jets. Star midfielder Isabelle Pritchard was outstanding for the Jets, with 26 possessions and seven tackles. It comes after 18 possessions in round one. Montana Ham and Charlotte Baskaran also had plenty of the ball for the Jets in the draw. The Jets sit fourth on the ladder, after a win in round one. The top three teams are all undefeated. The Jets travel to Ballarat this weekend to face the Greater Western Rebels on Saturday morning. Tara Murray 19 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY Tuesday, 10 March, 2020

Pat Stanley eyes tilt at group two Melton plate
Pat Stanley. (Stuart McCormick)
The flying Pat Stanley continued his rise to top-line star under the care of Kerryn Manning with a blistering victory at Tabcorp Park Melton. At just his fifth run for the Great Western-based horsewoman, the son of Western Ideal added the IRT Australia Markovina Free For All (2240m) to his recent South Australian Pacing Cup success with a dominant 14m triumph in Saturday night’s feature. The win, in a mile rate of 1:55.2, continued a great run of form since joining Manning’s yard and plans are now in place for a likely tilt at the Group 2 City of Melton Plate. “He should measure up, hopefully, in some of the better races,” Manning said. “He’s headed to America eventually. He’s owned by Ron [Buker] over there but he’s won back his $50,000 that he paid for him and he’s
earning more now. He said we’d leave him here while we are going well.” Pat Stanley was bred and raced in the early part of his career in New Zealand and then spent a couple of years with Blake Fitzpatrick in New South Wales before being sent to Victoria. “When they bought him I hadn’t really heard of him,” Manning said. “I watched a few of his replays and he looked to go really good without having a lot of luck up there, but [was] always running on really good.” Manning said Pat Stanley’s win in the South Australian Pacing Cup in early February, when severely pressured in the lead, proved he had the strength as well as the speed he had shown previously. This performance was followed by an eye-catching second behind Code Bailey in the Terang Pacing Cup prior to Saturday night’s success.
Storm sneaks home By Tara Murray Sydenham-Hillside got out of jail against West Newport to seal a Victorian Turf Cricket Association division 3 Roy Picone Shield grand final spot. The Storm looked like they were facing a finals exit, with West Newport on track to chase down the runs with wickets in hand in the semi-final. The Storm didn’t give up and with a couple of wickets, took the game into the final over. West Newport needed five runs off the final over, while the Storm needed one wicket to win through to a second straight grand final. Akeem Springer was given the job of bowling the final over. Storm president and first XI player Warren Hackney said Springer wasn’t meant to be bowling that over. “There was a miscalculation by the captain with the bowling and he couldn’t work out who still had an over left,” he said. “He threw the ball to Akeem, who hadn’t bowled all day. He kept his cool, bowling his off spinners and got the wicket needed. “It was a great day to celebrate.” Heavy rain during the week meant they weren’t able to get on the ground on day one, leaving the match to be a one-dayer. They had a delayed start on Sunday, but were still able to have a 40 overs a side match. The Storm batted first and made 8-180. Springer was the key throughout the innings, making 94. Dylan Knight, who made 33, was the only other player to score over 15. Hackney said they thought 180 might have been enough to get them the win. “We thought it might be enough if we put in a solid effort with the ball and in the field. “The opposition turned it up and put their best foot forward with the bat. We didn’t bowl too poorly, they had nothing to lose and almost pulled it off.” The Storm got a couple of early wickets and at 5-60 looked to be in control. West Newport’s middle order responded, and took the game deep, before Springer ended their hopes. Tim Grech took three wickets for the Storm. The grand final is the Storm’s second straight, having claimed the division 4 premiership last season. A win would put the Storm in division 2 next season. Hackney said they realised half way through the season that they could go deep into the season. “We’re just rapt to have another opportunity to extend our season by another two weeks,” he said. “It’s been a huge 12 months. We were always quietly confident that we could step up and be OK if we put our best foot forward. “Now we need one more win.” The Storm is expected to host the final over the next two weekends. The Storm will face Williamstown Imperials in the grand final. The Imperials beat Point Cook in the other semi-final. 20 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY Tuesday, 10 March, 2020
Pat Stanley has now had 45 career starts for 14 wins and more than $140,000 in prizemoney. Champion reinsman Chris Alford produced a winning treble at Melton, scoring in the Allied Express Pace (1200m, 4YO+) with David Aiken-trained Pirate Bay, winning the Benstud Standardbreds Trot (2240m, 4YO+ NR 75-100) with Andy Gath’s Miss Blissful and then the Empire Stallions Claiming Pace (1720m) with Emma Stewart’s Freddy Funk. Freddy Funk’s triumph capped a perfect night for Stewart, which prepared three runners at Melton for three wins. Also successful was debutant Ideal Dan, which took out the Breckon Farms Sapling Stakes (1720m, 2YO colts and geldings) and Ideal Conquest, which won the TAB Multiplier Pace (2240m, mares NR 70-89). Royals knocked out of finals It was a tough weekend for Melton South Royals, with all five of its sides knocked out of finals. For the first XI side it was a tough return to finals, facing Sunbury in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association Russell Pollock Division 5 Shield. Playing finals for the first time since the 2010-11 season, the Royals were left to rue poor moments with both the bat and ball. Originally a two-day game, the game was shortened to one day, with the ground still wet after heavy rain during the week. On Sunday, the Royals struggled to get going with the bat, all out for 75. Royals captain-coach Matthew Kozole said they didn’t think they had enough runs on the board. “We thought par was probably about 120,” he said. “If we got about 100-120 runs on the board we would have been in the game. “Getting 75 wasn’t enough.” Anthony Yates at the top of the order scored 19, but there was little support. The Royals got off to a perfect start with the ball, with Kozole taking three wickets to have Sunbury in trouble at 3-10. It wouldn’t last, with Sunbury finishing 4-77. Kozole said they gave themselves a good chance, but couldn’t get over the line in the end. “I had the belief in the boys and when we got a couple of early wickets, I thought we were a chance,” he said. “They knuckled down and did what we weren’t able to do, get a partnership in the middle of the order. “I did everything I could to go a grand final spot.” Kozole admits that the two grand finalists, Sunbury and Moonee Valley were probably the best two teams all season. In his first year as coach, Kozole said it had been a really successful season for the club. “We haven’t played finals for eight or nine years,” he said. “All five of our sides made finals. “To get here is really pleasing. “They say semi-finals are the hardest games to win. Hopefully we can maintain the core group and push for a game better next year. ‘If we stick together, I think we can go one step further.” Tara Murray

MOTOR
Hyundai’s no-nonsense approach By Derek Ogden, Marque Motoring
AT A GLANCE
Something old … something new: that just about sums up the Santa Fe Active as a no-nonsense wagon at a family-friendly price under $50K. For example, following keyless entry to the vehicle with fob tucked away, you have to step back in time, fumble for the key, slot it into the steering column ignition and turn the switch to start the engine. It’s then that the 21st century gets a look-in with the Santa Fe featuring much of the latest automotive technology, including Hyundai’s SmartSense package of safety stuff. Opening the innings for the Santa Fe squad is the Active petrol automatic featuring the latest Hyundai 3.5-litre V6 motor driving the front wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission, for $43,000, plus on-road costs. Thereafter follows a line-up of petrol and diesel all-wheel drive wagons up to the Highlander 2.2-litre diesel automatic AWD at $60,500 (plus ORCs). I ended up with a middle-order Active 2.2-litre diesel automatic AWD, with a $46,000 price tag, on test.

Infotainment Styling The Santa Fe plays on its family-friendly nature and shapes up with standard big sports utility vehicle looks.
Interior The surroundings eschew the ubiquitous black, opting for a grey base with chocolate highlights. Active seating misses out on the leather trappings of upper-level Santa Fe’s, being replaced by quality fabric. Storage is a major feature of the cabin with a large centre-console box and slots for drink bottles and the like within easy reach of all occupants.
All Santa Fe’s sport a touchscreen, the Active making do with a 7-inch display. Added to this is an array of buttons and knobs, among them air-con dials (no climate control here). Also absent is embedded satellite navigation. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto can be called up via a mobile phone connection. Wireless phone charging has gone missing too. Featured as standard in Santa Fe Active and Elite models is Hyundai Auto Link, a smartphone app that allows the owner to stay connected to the car. Included is driving info such as current distance, current travel time, today’s distance, today’s travel time, fuel
efficiency, and fuel consumption; parked vehicle location and parking time reminders. Roadside assistance can be contacted immediately.
collision-avoidance assist, smart cruise control with stop-and-go function, blind spot and rear cross-traffic warning, as well as driver attention warning, high beam assist and lane keeping assist. On the downside, the curtain airbag falls short, leaving those in the third row of seats exposed. There are no IsoFix or tether points either, which rules out baby seats.
Engines / transmissions The test vehicle was stuck with the tried-and-tested 2.2-litre 147 kW, 440 Nm turbo-diesel motor, which is available across all grades. It’s teamed with an eight-speed automatic transmission and Hyundai’s HTRAC all-wheel drive system.
Safety The 2020 Santa Fe boasts Hyundai’s SmartSense safety system which incorporates forward
Driving With 147 kW on tap at 3800 rpm, the 2.2-litre turbodiesel is an engine that’s a smooth operator and quiet to boot. With 1000 rpm of peak torque (1750 to 2750 rpm) there’s flexibility on hand when required for overtaking. Hyundai claims fuel consumption of 7.5 litres per 100 kilometres on the combined urban/highway cycle. The test car came up pretty much on target.

Subaru favourites go hybrid By Ewan Kennedy, Marque Motoring AT A GLANCE
Subaru has launched fuel-saving, emission-reducing petrol-electric hybrids to its two biggest selling models – the XV and Forester. One XV Hybrid AWD variant is offered and two Foresters: Hybrid L AWD and Hybrid S AWD. Subaru XV Hybrid offers more than 14 per cent improvement in fuel efficiency over equivalent petrol variants in the urban cycle and more than seven per cent improvement in the combined cycle. Forester offers improvement of more than 19 per cent in the urban cycle and more than nine per cent in the combined cycle. These numbers are compared to 2.5-litre petrol variants. Both hybrid models feature what Subaru terms e-Boxer power. A 2.0 litre horizontally opposed Boxer engine linked via Motor Assist to a high voltage lithium ion battery. The four cylinder 2.0 litre engine produces 110 kilowatts of power at 6000 rpm and 196 Nm of torque at 4000 rpm. The electric motor produces 12.3 kW of power and 66 Nm of torque, and is self-charging, via kinetic energy captured by regenerative braking and coasting. The e-Boxer logic adjusts the power split between petrol and electric to match driving conditions. It automatically changes between three modes: Motor Assist EV driving; Motor Assist electric (EV) + petrol engine driving and Petrol engine driving. From standstill or at low speed, the vehicle is powered by the electric motor only, for quiet, zero-emission driving. Depending upon driving environment, vehicle and battery condition, it can operate in fully electric mode up to 40 km/h. When driving in fully electric mode (both forward and reverse), the Pedestrian Alert

system emits a sound when the vehicle speed is 24 km/h or less. At high speed, the petrol engine exclusively powers the vehicle, while regenerative braking or coasting with foot off the accelerator, recharges the lithium ion battery. Under certain driving conditions above 40 km/h, when decelerating or coasting and the battery is charging, the petrol engine can turn off, achieving fuel saving. As soon as the
accelerator is pressed, the engine will re-start. A cooling system draws air from the cabin to help maintain the battery at operating temperature and to help ensure better longevity. Subaru Australia chief, Colin Christie, said: “Forester and XV are long-established sales successes in our range and we know there is pent-up demand for hybrid variants among one of the most loyal customer bases in the industry.
“We’re already achieving significant fleet successes with our hybrid variants, in an area where our engineering, safety and whole-of-life costs make a compelling story.” Advance orders for the pair of e-Boxer Subarus have far exceeded expectations so none were available for even the shortest of test by journalists at the press event. As soon as things settle down we will put an XV and a Forester through our normal test drive program.
