Phantom of the Marsh Bacchus Marsh audiences will soon have the chance to see a Broadway classic on their doorstep. The annual show from Performing Arts Headquarters for 2020 will be the classic Phantom of the Opera. Director JohnPaul Cocking said after staging We Will Rock You and Grease in the past two years, he wanted a new challenge. “It’s always good to keep challenging ourselves and pushing the boundaries,” Cocking said. “It’s big and dramatic and epic, and it will be stacks of fun. “It’s going to be a lot of work, and one of the biggest shows we’ve ever done, but I believe we’re up for the challenge.” Cocking said there would be a bigger emphasis on singing and dancing in this year’s show compared to previous years, and he was especially interested in seeing anyone with ballet or jazz dancing training to put their hand up at the auditions. The show will be staged in August and September. Auditions take place from February 21 to 29. Contact 5367 6864 or info@pahq.com. au to pick up an audition pack and book an audition.

Bar fights booze ban The owners of a recently opened wine bar in Caroline Springs say new restrictions on their liquor licence could make the business “unsustainable”. The Fancy Things Wine Bar has been operating under a temporary licence since December with a closing time of 11pm, but a new licence from Melton council has mandated a 10pm closure, with last drinks called at 9.30pm. The new licence also prohibits alcohol being served in the bar’s outdoor courtyard, and closes the courtyard at 8pm. Owner Zoe Jones said the restrictions would

place a huge strain on her business. “We would lose 25 seats outside, out of a 60-seat capacity venue,” Ms Jones said. “We’d have to lose junior staff members [and] reduce hours … it basically means revenue-wise we’d lose close to $2000 each day. That’s a significant amount, basically my rent. “We followed all the usual protocols for opening a business like this, and received just one objection from a resident. “We’ve been trading with no complaints since December, and to be honest, have had nothing but immense support from the community for something like this to open up.” A petition to have the original operating

hours reinstated has received more than 2300 signatories in a week. Ms Jones said the support from the community had her hopeful the restrictions could be eased. “It’s a coffee and wine bar with a mini-grand piano, not the sort of thing that we want to be running into the late night,” Ms Jones said. “We’ve lived in Caroline Springs for 12 years now, and we’ve always wanted a place we could go for a quiet drink to unwind with mates, and we wanted to create that environment that is missing out here. “The community have been so supportive of me opening this venue, and wishing me

nothing but success, because this area needs to see new growth and new businesses, and also some variance. We have so many amazing cafes and restaurants, it’s just nice to offer something different.” Council planning services manager Bob Baggio said the liquor restrictions on the bar were necessary given the location. “Fancy Things is located in a mixed use commercial and residential area,” Mr Baggio said. “Given the site’s proximity to residential apartments, it was considered that 10pm was an appropriate closing time. “In mixed use areas, it’s important that we balance the needs of businesses and residents.”

Noise works ‘not there yet’ By Ewen McRae Almost one year after complaints were first raised about noise from the Bacchus Marsh Hospital’s air filtration system, residents say nothing has changed. Star Weekly reported in March 2019 that a high-pitched whining noise from the revamped operating theatres at the hospital had led some residents to sleep with earplugs in, and caused ongoing discomfort. One resident, who asked not to be named, said while residents were supportive of the hospital and the upgrades, frustration with the

ongoing noise was becoming overwhelming. “We were really happy with the investment in the hospital, and we’re really supportive of everything the hospital is doing,” the resident said. “But we’re now almost 12 months on from the hospital first telling us it will all be fixed soon, and the noise is still there. It’s far worse in summer too, on a hot and humid day it sounds like it’s a plane taxiing for take-off. “It just seems like they don’t have a solution. It’s improved marginally but the problem is still there. Our position has always been that we don’t want these services to go – they’re an

“We’ve had a report from an acoustic engineer, and we’ve followed all the recommendations in their report, and we’re now awaiting the results of the latest report which was done two weeks ago. “We’re committed to resolving this issue, but we need to await this latest report to see if it will be a cost issue to Djerriwarrh or if it’s a design issue from the engineer. Unfortunately it is painstakingly slow while every part of the system is looked at. “We’re a lot closer, but we’re not there yet.” The hospital said it were also receiving assistance from EPA noise specialists.

essential community service – but after a year we just want the noise to stop.” Testing from the Environment Protection Authority last year confirmed the noise from the filtration system was 12dB above acceptable levels and an abatement notice was issued in September 2019 to lower the noise levels. Djerriwarrh Health Services chief executive Belinda Scott said the hospital had spent about $55,000 on trying to rectify the issue, and was hopeful a solution was not far away. “We’ve done an extensive amount of work, but unfortunately we remain outside the night-time noise limit,” Ms Scott said.

Volleyball comp to hit Melton Melton will soon be home to a new volleyball competition, after a local school decided to open its doors to the sport. Catholic Regional College Melton has had a successful school volleyball program for a number of years, but students have not had a local competition to play in outside of the annual inter-school competition. After consulting with Volleyball Victoria and Western Region Volleyball, the school is offering its indoor courts for a social competition. School coach Michael Hill said it was an exciting development.

“I’ve been pestering Volleyball Victoria for a number of years to help out, and we’re now able to offer this competition, which is exciting,” Mr Hill said. “Other schools in the area play in the school competition, so there’s interest out there for it, but the competition we’re starting will be open-aged and we’ll see how many come along. “It’s a good chance for the kids to develop and improve their skills in the sport, and we’ll see where it goes from there.” While the only school involvement is in offering use of its courts, Mr Hill said the

school was happy to be involved in outreach into the community. “It’s not run through the school, but the support they’ve given us has been great,” he said. “It’s a bold idea, and this is a clear support of the school’s aim to be more open to the community.” The competition will start on April 23 and will run until September. Groups, clubs and organisations whose projects benefit the Melton community can now apply for council grants of up to $10,000. Melton council’s Community Grants Program is designed to support activities that increase community participation, promote and develop local pride, provide services and facilities that strengthen local health and wellbeing, and promote community leadership. Applications are open until February 29 for two categories of grants: community grants (up to $10,000) for larger-scale projects; and entry level (up to $2000) for smaller groups or projects. Melton mayor Lara Carli said council was proud to help community groups have an impact in the local area. “Across our city, there are so many clubs and organisations doing wonderful things for the benefit of the people who live, work and play here,” Cr Carli said. “At council we recognise this valuable work and want to help these positive activities continue. “I’d encourage anyone who is part of a group, club or organisation that enhances local wellbeing, pride and participation to apply.” To be eligible for the community grants, the project must have 80 per cent of participant’s living in the City of Melton, and applicants must discuss the project application with the community funding and project officer. These grants are offered twice a year, with the next opportunity coming in June. Details: melton.vic.gov.au/grants Ewen McRae

No advance on pokies loss By Ewen McRae Melton residents continue to plough millions of dollars into electronic gaming machines each month, according to the latest figures. Data from the Victorian Commission for Gaming and Liquor Regulation shows Melton residents are consistently spending about $6 million on gaming machines every month. There are 523 gaming machines spread across seven venues in Melton. In December 2019, $6.14 million was spent on gaming machines in the municipality, compared with $5.9 million in December 2018.

VCGLR figures reveal expenditure dropped to about $5.3 million in the cooler months. Melton council community planning manager Matt Wilson said the council was working hard to reduce the harm of gambling in the community. “We are committed to driving change in local gambling. Harm prevention for the whole community is a key consideration in council’s decision-making around gambling products.” The council adopted a new Gambling Harm Prevention and Reduction Policy in November. Mr Wilson said the policy aimed to prevent and reduce the harms of gambling products

and the gambling industry by setting guidance around the location, design and placement of gambling products in the City of Melton. “It particularly focuses on limiting exposure to minors and clearly separating gambling areas from other areas in venues,” he said. “The policy is underpinned by recent Victorian Responsible Gambling Foundation research which shows that to reduce harms, we need to focus on the design of gambling products and the way the gambling industry operates.” Alliance for Gambling Reform chief advocate Reverend Tim Costello, said the increasing

gambling losses in Victoria were having a wide-ranging impact. “We cannot forget that poker machines lead to the loss of much more than money,” Rev Costello said. “In extreme cases, poker machines can cause the loss of lives through connections to some deaths by suicide. “Then there is the loss of homes, families, relationships, jobs, cars and much more due to gambling harm. “They are not in any way a healthy form of entertainment. We wouldn’t dream of saying that cigarettes are a healthy product, and pokies are no different.”

Festival the bee’s knees There’s a buzz around Diggers Rest as it prepares for a swarm to next month’s Honey Festival. Run by the J Beekeeping School in Diggers Rest, the festival brings more than 500 people together to discover the world of bees, honey and the importance of these tiny insects on the environment. Carl Hornstrand from the school said it was the biggest event the school runs each year, and was always a fun family day out. “It’s something we’ve done every year since the club started,” Mr Hornstrand said. “It’s about teaching young and old beekeepers how to keep bees, and why they’re so important to Mother Nature. We have food trucks, kids activities, and all sorts of things to keep people busy on the day. “We have a program where we show people how to extract honey from a hive, and lots of

live exhibits for people to enjoy.” One of the highlights every year is the bee beard competition during which experts coax a swarm of bees onto their face to give a stunning visual, Mr Hornstrand said. “The whole bee hive circles around the queen bee, so our experts capture the queen in a small canister around their neck. “People are also becoming more aware of how important bees are to the natural environment, so we aim to educate as well as entertain on the day.” The festival will be held at 35 Duncans Lane, Diggers Rest from 10am to 4pm on March 1. Bright smiles for dental program By Ewen McRae Melton students will be among the latest to benefit from free dental check-ups at school, as part of a new state government program. The Smile Squad program was launched in August last year, and provides free check-ups and treatment to Victorian public school students, including teeth cleaning, fluoride application, fissure sealants, fillings, root canals and any other non-cosmetic treatments. The government announced last week that

smiles, but busy families can often struggle to find the time to get to the dentist. That’s why this program is so important.” The state government said a quarter of all Australian children have untreated tooth decay and in Victoria, dental conditions are the highest single cause of preventable hospitalisations for children under 10. Once fully rolled out in 2022, the Smile Squad program will provide examinations and dental treatment for more than 650,000 public school children every year.

Local MP Steve McGhie encouraged all Melton public schools to make use of the dental van. “I encourage all local schools to take up the invitation to have Smile Squad vans visit them this year so all children can have the opportunity for free dental check-ups,” Mr McGhie said. “When it comes to oral health care, early prevention is the key and the Smile Squad program is designed to set our kids up with healthy habits for the rest of their lives. “Our kids deserve to have healthy happy

Paramedics new home Paramedics in Bacchus Marsh will be quicker out of the gates, following the opening of a new ambulance station. The Gisborne Road station was opened on February 13, and will provide locals with 24-hour care, as well as a four-wheel drive response unit. The new station includes training facilities, four rest and recline rooms, a fully fitted kitchen, five-bay garage, improved security and staff car parking. Ambulance Services Minister Jenny Mikakos was on hand for the official opening, and said the station would help paramedics provide state-of-the-art care for Bacchus Marsh residents. “In a medical emergency, every second counts,” Ms Mikakos said. “This modern, new home for paramedics in Bacchus Marsh means locals can get lifesaving emergency care they can count on – when they need it most.

“We’re getting it done and building more state-of-the-art ambulance stations, just like Bacchus Marsh, so our dedicated paramedics have the facilities they deserve and need to do what they do best, which is saving lives.” Melton MP Steve McGhie said the station would provide a much needed boost for health in the region. “This brand-new station has everything the Bacchus Marsh paramedics need – and its location means help is just around the corner when an emergency strikes,” Mr McGhie said. “I’m proud that the Andrews Labor government has built a new ambulance station in Bacchus Marsh. We are investing in our growing community to provide the very best health services they deserve.” Ewen McRae Minister Jenny Mikakos, Melton MP Steve McGhie and Bacchus Marsh paramedics open the new ambulance centre. Haze link to heart health By Goya Dmytryshchak Bushfire smoke haze may increase the number of cardiac arrests and other heart problems across Victoria and further afield, according to new research. Williamstown’s Anjali Haikerwal, whose doctorate examined health impacts of the 2006-07 Victorian bushfires, found that just two days of exposure to small particulate matter (PM2.5) was associated with increased risk of out-of-hospital cardiac arrests and hospital admissions for cardiovascular problems. Microscopic PM2.5 pollution is about a third the width of a human hair, or smaller than a speck of dust, and is inhaled straight into the lungs and bloodstream. “These particles may act as a trigger factor for acute cardiovascular events; therefore it’s important not to delay seeking medical help if you experience symptoms of heart problems during smoke episodes from bushfires,” Dr Haikerwal said. Using statewide data from the Victorian Ambulance Cardiac Arrest Registry and Department of Health and Human Services, Dr Haikerwal found a nearly seven per cent increase in out-of-hospital cardiac arrests and about two per cent increase in emergency department visits and hospitalisations for acute cardiac events. People aged 65 and over and men were the most vulnerable. Her findings were published in the prestigious Journal of the American Heart Association. She said more research was needed into medium to long-term health impacts of smoke exposure from intense bushfires burning for days and weeks as witnessed recently. “It’s very unprecedented at present –

Dr Anjali Haikerwal. (Damjan Janevski) 204051_01

the smoke haze which has lingered on in Melbourne and neighbouring places and Victoria for days,” Dr Haikerwal said. “In recent weeks, most parts of Australia have been shrouded in bushfire smoke for days with very poor to hazardous air quality

– high levels of small particulate matter PM2.5 – reported in many cities and towns. “And the most important thing is the levels of these harmful particulate matter – they have been in the atmosphere for weeks now and at levels which are very harmful to a human body.”

Residents urged to store water supply Western Water is warning residents in Melton and Moorabool that they should not rely on their mains water supply if there is a bushfire in the region. Western Water chief operating officer Graham Holt said in the event of fire, customers should make sure they have alternative water supplies such as independent water storage. “Water pressure and water supply cannot be guaranteed in the event of a bushfire,” Mr Holt said. “You can help by keeping fire hydrants near your home free of debris and vegetation.” Western Water said they work closely with the CFA during the bushfire season and has prepared staff and networks for extreme conditions. They’ve also advised residents to plan ahead and consult their local CFA for information on preparing for a bushfire and recommendations for an independent water supply. Locals are encouraged to register their phone number at westernwater. com.au to allow Western Water to provide direct updates via SMS if there is an issue with the water supply. If residents think a hydrant needs maintenance, they can contact Western Water by calling 1300 650 422 or by completing an online form. Ewen McRae

18 February 2020 Melton City Council Community News

Step up to clean up

Mayor’s Message

Cr Lara Carli I was thrilled last week to hear that I’d been appointed to the 2020 Local Government Mayoral Advisory Panel (LGMAP) by The Hon Adem Somyurek MP, Minister for Local Government and Minister for Small Business. Made up of 15 Mayors from across Victoria, the LGMAP meets four times a year, and provides high level advice to the Minister on a range of legislative, regulatory, and policy decisions which impact on local government. It’s a great honour to be appointed to the LGMAP, and I look forward to working with my fellow Mayors, and Minister Somyurek, to help inform important decision making that will influence matters of strategic importance not only in the City of Melton, but right across Victoria.

Clean Up Australia Day is on in less than two weeks and with local events happening all over the City of Melton, it’s a great chance to help your neighbourhood look its best. Across the country, 2.5 million tonnes of plastic waste is created each year and unfortunately some of this ends up in parks, roadsides, bush, waterways and oceans. You can register online to join the clean-up – either check out existing clean-up events, or register another site that needs love, attention, and some enthusiastic volunteers to collect and remove rubbish. Local sites already registered include Toolern Creek, Navan Park, Melton Botanic Garden, Caroline Springs Library precinct, and Burnside Heights Recreation Reserve. There are plenty of opportunities for local businesses and schools to get involved, too. Schools can run their own clean-up activity with students, and access lesson plans on waste and litter. Businesses can coordinate team building clean-up days, work on waste reduction campaigns as advocacy partners, or donate funds to the cause. To find your closest clean-up site, register your own site, or become involved as a school or business, visit melton.vic.gov.au/cleanup If you choose to register your own local site, Council can help with site planning and rubbish removal. To find out more, contact our Waste Services team on 9747 7200. Clean Up Australia Day in the City of Melton WHEN: Sunday 1 March MORE INFO: melton.vic.gov.au/cleanup

I’m also proud to announce that FOGO is coming to the City of Melton! Around 60 per cent of what goes into Red Bins

is food and garden waste, so we’re rolling out an exciting FOGO (Food organics. Garden organics.) service that’s great for our environment. From 1 July 2020, residents can add loose food waste, including meat, dairy, plate scrapings, fruit and veggies, to their Green Bin, along with garden waste. Food and garden organics that are added to Green Bins—and diverted from landfill—are processed into compost to be used in gardens, parks and farms, which is a real win for our environment. To find out more about our exciting new FOGO service, visit melton.vic.gov.au/fogo or call Customer Service on 9747 7200 to order a Green Bin. Please contact me about Council related issues on 0409 951 020, email: lara.carli@melton.vic.gov.au or at facebook.com/Cr.LaraCarli

Cambridge Ward

Cr Kathy Madjlik When people ask me why I became a Councillor, I simply reply, ‘because I love my community and I want to make a positive difference for others.’ For almost 12 years, I’ve had the privilege of representing, and advocating on behalf of the residents of this great City, and I have loved every moment of it. Being a Councillor has not only given me the opportunity to give back to a community that has been so kind to me and my family, but also to advocate for those who are disadvantaged, or feel they have no voice. I was blessed to have been brought up in a loving and nurturing environment, with strong female role models who taught me to stand up for what I believe in, and never settle for mediocrity. Most people know I have a daughter

who lives with a profound disability, so advocating in this space is very important to me. Issues around access and inclusion affect hundreds, if not thousands, of local residents, and I invite everyone to look around, at loved ones, friends and within the community, to see what they could do to make our City more inclusive and accessible for everyone. Sometimes even the smallest gesture can have the biggest impact. For now, I thank all Cambridge Ward residents for their trust and support in allowing me to be their local Councillor. I look forward to hearing any suggestions or ideas you may have about how I can better represent you as an important member of community. You can contact me regarding any Council related matters. I can be contacted via email at kathy.majdlik@melton.vic.gov.au or on 0412 584 058.

A three-minute meander from Frontier Park, a café and pharmacy, this beautifully presented abode, on about 450 square metres in Woodlea estate, is loaded with contemporary appeal. Square-set cornices on 2.7-metre ceilings, stone benches, designer lightfittings, crisp palette, and sleek kitchen/bathrooms – as well as the Aussie essential of extended eaves – speak of the quality on show. The four fitted bedrooms include a lavish main with walk-in robe and dual-basin en suite, while a cinema/playroom space could serve as a fifth bedroom. Within the spacious floorboarded living domain, the kitchen has stone benches, pearl-grey and black cabinetry, walk-in pantry and all mod-cons including integrated microwave. An integrated alfresco area, landscaped yards and a double garage with internal access are included.

This well-presented house, within a minute’s zip of Western Freeway entry, has starter and/ or investment property written all over it. The block, about 705 square metres, provides potential for subdivision or an extension, STCA. It’s all light and bright inside, with a lounge room opening up to the right of the entry hall. It has a lace-dressed bay window, plus full-height windows rising to the ceiling angle’s high point. Abutting the meals area, the kitchen has slate floor tiles, abundant white cabinetry and soft-peach laminate benches, as well as a gas cooker. Both fitted and carpeted bedrooms are across the way from the laundry, separate toilet, and a two-way dual-zone bathroom with tub and shower spaces separated. A paved alfresco area, under multiple shade sails, links with the large backyard which has a shed.

This isn’t a huge house, but the way the space has been used, the amount of natural light admitted through big windows, and the pleasing aesthetic suggest otherwise. That’s come about under the helm of Melton’s award-winning builder, Exclusive Homes, who present here a house with extra flair and attention to finer points. The property, close to parks, schools, shops and sporting facilities, will have undoubted attraction for first-home buyers – and investors will have it on their radar, too. The interior palette is greys and white done well, with subtle accent walls here and there, and white roller blinds on all windows. All benches are grey stone, ceilings are high and doors are upgraded. There are three carpeted and fitted bedrooms, two at the back neighbouring the sleek fully tiled main bathroom, separate toilet and laundry. The spacious street-facing main bedroom has a walk-in robe, and an ensuite fully tiled in grey and with a smart vanity beneath a downlit bulkhead. In the living domain, the kitchen (under a dropped ceiling with downlights and pendants) is one cooks will especially appreciate for its lavish bench space. Also on board are loads of white cupboards, a step-in pantry, window/tiled splashback, and dishwasher, integrated microwave and 900mm cooker. Ducted heating, evaporative cooling and intercom system are included. A stretch of concrete behind the drive-through double garage could serve as a spot for a pergola. 11 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY Tuesday, 18 February, 2020

Melton South has received a shock boost with a third VFL player moving to the club full time for this year’s Ballarat Football League season. Having already secured Port Melbourne duo Ryan Pendlebury and Shannen Lange, the Panthers have signed forward Dylan Conway. Conway, who has also been playing for Port Melbourne, has had Melton South as his home club the last two years. In that time he has played eight senior games for the Panthers. Panthers coach Heath Pritchard said Conway was originally going to continue his VFL career. He said they were thrilled to have him full time at the club. “He is a proven player in this league,” he said. “I got a call from him saying things had changed. He’s just had a baby and runs his own business and is struggling to get to training three times a week. “He’s good friends with Shannen and Ryan and wanted to play with them again.” Pritchard, who was a runner at Port Melbourne before taking on the Panthers coaching role, said that Conway’s stats of 37 goals in his time for the Panthers doesn’t show his true impact in his time at the club. He said one of their areas of concern last season had been in the forward line and they hoped that Conway would help with that. They also expected Aaron Clarke, who is on Coburg’s VFL list, will play some games after spending last year in the NAB League.

Michael Callus has returned to the club and is also expected to be part of a new look forward line. Pritchard confirmed the signing of Lange, who has been training with the side throughout the pre-season. Lange, who finished equal fourth in the VFL best and fairest, the Liston Medal, last year, retired from the VFL after deciding his opportunity to play at a higher level was over. Pritchard said he would play in the midfield at the Panthers. Pendlebury will play a key role in defence alongside Daniel Leggett and Sam Hurst. Daniel Walker has also joined the Panthers from cross town rival Melton. Pritchard said the club’s decision 12 months ago to become a home club for several VFL players had already paid off. There’s still another three players on VFL lists who are aligned to the Panthers. On the other side, Melton South has kept most of its list, having only lost Paul Bower and Lachie Watkins. “Paul is a big loss, he was our best and fairest winner, but we think we have more than covered him,” he said. With the inclusion of some top end talent, Pritchard said they were hoping to be more competitive this year. The Panthers finished bottom for a second straight season. “We realise that we are coming from a long way back,” he said. “We’re not going to be making big statements. “We want to be competitive and then you can start winning games of football.”

SPORT Spark missing as Western United enter free fall Western United has lost its way in the second half of the A-League season. United has won just once in their past seven matches, free falling to seventh on the ladder, four points outside the top six. In one of its most lifeless performances of the season on Sunday, United went down 1-0 to Brisbane Roar at Mars Stadium in Ballarat. United coach Mark Rudan cut a deflated figure after the game because he and his team are working hard during the week to regain their spark, but it is not translating to match days. Aside from three good chances in the first 12 minutes, all skied over the crossbar, United barely even threatened Roar goalkeeper Jamie Young, who had one of his easiest days at the office with the home side not registering a shot on target despite having the lion’s share of possession with 61 per cent. “I thought we were the better team in the first half, albeit not really getting a shot on goal, but we threatened, had a lot of the ball,” Rudan said.

A-League Western United 0 Brisbane Roar 1 (Muratovic 61) At Mars Stadium, Ballarat “They played a high line, we worked all week on making forward runs at the right times and who makes the forward runs, whether it be our 10s or our full backs who had the higher starting position. “We re-confirmed that message to the boys at half time, yet we didn’t really see it. “That’s kind of what frustrated me the most is that we didn’t execute what we spoke about during the week and we worked on during the week as well.” Western United was brought undone by a sloppy error at the back by debutant Tomoki Imai in the 61st minute. Otherwise a solid contributor for United on debut, Imai let the ball slip out of his control and into the path

of Roar forward Brad Inman, who unselfishly played in substitute Mirza Muratovic to score past United goalkeeper Filip Kurto. Rudan shielded Imai from criticism. “I’m not going to have a go at him,” he said. “Ultimately it was his mistake that you could talk about, but it was his first game, his debut for the club.” Alessandro Diamanti and Valentino Yuel provided some energy for Western United off the bench in the second half. Jerry Skotadis was outstanding in defensive midfield in the first half, while Oskar Dillon continued his solid work in defence alongside veteran Andrew Durante. The best chance of the second half came off a beautiful cross from Diamanti to striker Besart Berisha, who put his header wide. It was a frustrating day at the office for Western United. United will need to dust itself off quickly with a short turnaround for its clash with Wellington Phoenix in Wellington on Friday night. Lance Jenkinson

Sports shorts Harness Racing Storms on Friday resulted in the group one Knight Pistol meeting at Tabcorp Park Melton being postponed. Heavy rain left the track damaged and unsafe to race. Organisers worked quickly behind the scenes to reschedule the event for three days later on Monday night.

BCA Darley suffered a massive blow ahead of its finals campaign in the Ballarat Cricket Association, with Danza Hyatt to miss the finals. Hyatt, who has been the standout player in the competition, has been called up to represent the West Indies to play in the ICC Masters over 35 World Cup. The side is set to be captained by Brian Lara. Meanwhile on Saturday, there was no play in the Lions match against Wendouree. For more details on Hyatt’s call up, go to www.starweekly.com.au/sports/hyattblow-for-darley/

GDCA Rain again played havoc with play in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association McIntyre Cup. For a second straight match, there was limited play on day one of matches, with rain falling throughout the day. Just two matches got underway with Bacchus Marsh the big winner. Bacchus Marsh claimed first innings points against Riddell after bowling them out for 88. The Bulls were 2-94 in reply. St Anthony’s were 2-56 against Diggers Rest Bulla.

Titans have a tough day By Tara Murray It was a tough day for the North Western Titans in Baseball Victoria Summer League. In a rare triple header for the club’s three senior sides, the club was hoping to get a few wins on the board in front of their home crowd. The three sides, the women’s, reserves and seniors, put in mixed performances, but all ended in the same result, a loss. The Titans women started off the day facing ladder leaders Sunshine Eagles. Basic errors would come back to hurt the Titans as they lost 18-4. Titans president Danny Haymes said the side had an ‘off day’. “That’s the easiest way to put it,” he said. “We made too many errors. We out-hit them, but we made crucial errors in the dig and we couldn’t come back from that.” The loss is the Titans second in a row and not

the form they want to be taking into their first finals series. Haymes said the two losses had given the side an idea what they need to be prepared for once it comes to finals. They play their final regular season game this week. They currently sit third. “They need to get themselves ready for finals,” he said. “We’re looking forward to getting back on the training track and ironing out some little errors.” The reserves were next to hit the pitch, with the side having a 7-2 loss. Haymes said it was a good performance from the side. In division 3, the match ended in disappointment for the Titans after a late rally fell short against Chelsea Dolphins. The Titans fell short 15-10 against a side that needed to win to keep their finals hopes alive. Haymes said there were some good signs, but

they couldn’t get the job done in the end. He said the difference was allowing too many Dolphins batters’ walks. “We had to finish the game after the eighth innings due to bad light,” he said. “We thought we might have been able to beat them. “After the seventh innings we brought it back to 10-10. We always thought that we would be able to catch them. “We were happy with the performance and how we fought back.” The Titans, who will finish bottom, end their season this weekend against Ormond GH Blue. Haymes said it had been a disappointing season after setting out to play finals. “We played better than the results showed,” he said. “We let a lot of games slip. About three or four games we lost in the last two innings. “It’s a learning curve and we’ve taken a step in the right direction.”

Big V Melton Thoroughbreds’ two senior teams will start the season at home in the Big V division 2 competition. In a double header at Melton Indoor Recreation Centre, the Thoroughbreds women and then men will meet the Wangaratta North East Bushrangers on March 14. The Thoroughbreds youth league men’s side will start their season on the same night against Whittlesea Pacers, while the youth league women’s side will play the Wyndham Devils. Hillside Sharks add depth and experience Hillside has looked to add some experience to its squad for this year’s Essendon District Football League division 1 season. Having finished fifth last year, the Sharks showed they could match it with the top sides, but let slip some matches they should have won. While they’ve lost a couple of their bigger-name players, the Sharks have been working hard to put together a squad that will challenge for finals. New coach Charlie Denaro said they were happy with how things had gone so far. He was appointed later than most coaches, but said he didn’t think that had set them back. “I was still in the club anyway and the club didn’t sit back and started the recruiting process before I was appointed,” he said. “We’ve pretty much got the players we were after. I think we’ve got five or six players who come into the club, who we think can play a lot of senior footy.

‘‘

We’ll be trying to sneak into that third or fourth spot - Charlie Denaro

’’

“There’s maybe another one or two on the horizon.” Former VFL player Hisham Kerbatieh headlines the signings for the Sharks. He had been playing in the EDFL premier division when he wasn’t playing VFL. Denaro said Kerbatieh had decided not to play VFL this year. “He just wants to focus on local footy,” Denaro said. “He has been torn apart playing local and VFL for a number of years now, so he wants to focus all his energies and play for Hillside. “He has been fantastic at the moment, been great in everything he has done so far.”

Josh Trembearth, who has played premier division the past few years, is another player to sign with the Sharks. Other signings include Lachlan Hensen and Bryson Scales. The Sharks are confident that former captain Joel Bonnici will be back in Hillside colours. Bonnici spent last season at Tullamarine, which has denied two clearances to return to his former club. Denaro said there was a bit of work to do before having Bonnici cleared. “We’ll try and get things done with Tullamarine and we’ll bide our time. “He has been fantastic and he wants to finish his football with Hillside, he’s got a lot of friends here. “He has not missed a beat and will be a good addition and will give us a bit of experience that we need.” Bonnici’s return is much needed, with the Sharks losing last season’s captain Victor

Phoenix in Cup demolition By Tara Murray Melton Phoenix put on a demolition job against an undermanned Melbourne Lions in the qualifying round of the FFA Cup. In their first official hit-out of the season, the Phoenix were at home against an undermanned Lions team, which had just nine players. The Phoenix were in control at half-time, leading 6-1, before running over the top of the Lions to win 24-1. Phoenix shared the goals with Jonathan Dunn stunning with eight. Chris Briggs (5), Jason Moody (4), Jordan Borg (4) and Michael Kapiris (3) all made big contributions. Heading into that first game, coach Darren Traynor said they were hoping to at least get to the second week of the cup, which they have done. Traynor said there was a lot of excitement at the club on and off the field with a focus on the proper FV state league 5 west season. “Going by what people are saying, they’re pretty excited,” Traynor said. “The pre-season has been good. “The list is looking good and we have a bit of depth as well. It’s been pretty good and pretty positive. “The feedback we’ve been getting from past players and people still involved, it’s an exciting time.” Traynor said Phoenix, which has had one loss in their past 12 games and finished sixth last season, would have a different looking side this season. He said talent wasn’t his focus when looking to bring players into the club. “My big thing, and it’s got the full support of the committee, we want good people and don’t want to sign someone on just ability. “Good character is important and we want the young kids to feel comfortable. If we can get that right then things will flow.” While the Phoenix’s list has undergone some changes, Traynor said they were still looking to add a couple more players. They’ve signed goalkeeper Ekic Semir, while a couple of former players including Jordan Borg have returned to the club. “We’ve signed a couple of boys who I used to coach in the NPL in the under-18s and under-20s. “There’s some boys from Point Cook and a keeper from another club and a couple of others from Spring Hills. “We’re chasing one or two more defenders. We have a lot of attacking players, it’s normally the other way round.” Traynor said they have a full book of pre-season games lined up ahead of the season start on March 15. In other FFA Cup qualifying matches, it was a tough ask for Bacchus Marsh against Bundoora United. United won easily, 12-0 and will join the Phoenix in the next round.

Micallef and star forward Brandon Coletta – both moving to East Keilor. Denaro said they couldn’t replace players like those two. “I think people like that are hard to replace, but we can get people around who can play the roles they did and they can grow into them. “Hopefully [they’ll] be equally as good in a few years.” Denaro said they know the task will be hard but are aiming for finals, with East Keilor the team to beat. “Pat [Christofi] has done a fantastic job,” he said. “He is really lifting the standard, not just at his club, but every division 1 club is following suit. “We’ll be trying to sneak into that third or fourth spot, bit of luck who knows how far we can go.” Tara Murray

Bacchus Marsh loses top of table clash Bacchus Marsh fell just short in a thrilling top of the table clash in Bowls Victoria pennant, division 2, section 1. Facing Port Melbourne, the match was a battle of the two standout teams in the competition. Neither side disappointed on a wet day, with the match going down to the wire. Port Melbourne came away with the points, winning 86 (14)-79 (4). Troy WIliams and Simon Cornock were the winning skips for Bacchus Marsh, winning by six shots and eight shots respectively. Phil Minniti’s rink lost 25-20, while it was a tough day for Daniel Willis’ rink which lost 32-16. Minniti said the match was a good test for the side ahead of finals and would love to face them in the grand final. “They have been the measuring stick all year,” he said. “It was a really high standard on a really quick green. It was always going to be tough going to Port Melbourne and they had a really good crowd behind them. “The noise was like playing a final. “They were a little bit too good for us. We were down all day, but stuck with them and fought it out to the end.” Bacchus Marsh remains in second, but the gap between them and Port Melbourne has extended. Port Melbourne sits 13 points clear on top, with Bacchus Marsh 30 points clear of third-placed Deer Park 2 with three rounds remaining. Minniti said they needed to win two of their remaining three matches to ensure they finish top two and secure a home final. He said to finish top two in their first season in the competition was more than he expected. “Once you make finals, you go out there to win it.” The side had been boosted throughout the year with the arrival of a few new players who Minniti hoped would stick around for the long term. In other matches, Melton’s game against Hoppers didn’t go ahead due to the weather. Melton remains in seventh. In division 2, section 2, Melton won a thriller against Flemington/Kensington, 79 (14)-78 (4). Melton sits second. Tara Murray

Modern makeover for Patrol By Derek Ogden, Marque Motoring

AT A GLANCE MODEL RANGE

It’s been a long journey for the Nissan Patrol since its inception, almost 70 years ago, taking it up to the big boys of the 4x4 market, especially the Toyota Land Cruiser. Now the rugged Nissan continues along the slip road to a quieter life with its MY20 model. In 2013, the Patrol took on the role of a flagship with a big brother in the shape of ST-L, Ti and Ti-L variants. Last year, the ST-L was retired, leaving the two petrol-only options carrying the load. For 2020, the remaining pair have been given a new look, plus a range of Nissan intelligent active safety features as standard equipment for an extra $3000 apiece, up to respective prices of $75,990 and $91,990, plus on-road costs. Both the Nissan Ti (the test car) and Ti-L, have retained the robust tradition of the Patrol, that of a genuine off-roader / tough tow truck.

Nissan Patrol Ti 5.6 automatic $75,990 Nissan Patrol Ti-L 5.6 automatic $91,990

Note: These prices do not include dealer or government charges. Contact your local Nissan dealer for drive-away prices.

Six airbags include curtain bags covering all three seating rows.

Driving

Styling A modern makeover front and back has given a sleeker look to both Ti and Ti-L. Both feature new fender panels, front grille and LED lamps. LED lights front and back have been brightened – 52 LEDs per headlight, plus LED foglamps, and a total of 44 out back. New boomerang-shaped tail-lights and chrome nameplate are designed to improve visibility at night. Eighteen-inch alloy wheels have also been updated and wrapped in tall 265 / 70 tyres, giving the ability to iron out surface defects on the bitumen.

Interior Touted as having seating for eight in leather seats, the third row offered a tight fit for grown-ups. Up front is unashamed comfort with driver and front passenger positions

at 5800 rpm and 560 Nm of peak torque, the latter available from 1600 revs. It’s mated with a seven-speed automatic transmission with manual mode.

Infotainment Features across the new Patrol range include Bluetooth hands-free phone, large format front DVD player, 2GB music server with six speakers, iPod connectivity, steering wheel audio controls, intelligent key access. New to Patrol is Apple CarPlay or Android Auto access.

Engines / Transmissions A direct-injected, 5.6-litre, naturally aspirated alloy V8 petrol engine delivers 298 kW of power

Safety Both grades now include Intelligent Emergency Braking, Intelligent Forward Collision Warning and Rear Cross Traffic Alert as standard. While already standard on the Ti-L, the Ti has taken up Intelligent Cruise Control, Lane Departure Warning, Lane Intervention, blind Spot Warning, plus Intelligent Blind Spot Intervention.

The relatively new V8 engine delivers 298 kW of power and 560 Nm of torque, with 90 per cent of the latter on call from just 1600 rpm. This is enough to get the 3500 kg GVM hulk under way surprisingly sharpish and makes overtaking a breeze with the engine seemingly never in danger of running out of revs. Power is put to ground through an advanced seven-speed automatic and a sophisticated, electronically controlled, all mode 4x4 system, with settings for Auto, 4H, 4L, diff lock and hill descent control. The centre console mounted-control knob also incorporates Patrol’s terrain select system, featuring on road, snow, sand and rock settings for the serious off-road adventurer. There were no surprises with the heavyweight’s fuel consumption which averaged 16 litres per 100 kilometres while cruising and topped 20 litres per hundred in heavy city going. Owners can expect a more comfortable drive than previously thanks to a suspension retuning with improved dampers that have been enhanced to provide more dampening at a higher piston speed. This gives better on-road ride comfort.
