Back to school a double delight

Teachers at Sydenham Hillside Primary School could be forgiven for thinking they’re seeing double. The school has welcomed six sets of twins as part of this year’s prep intake. Principal Ben Russell said it’s the most the school has ever had in one intake. “We’ve actually only got four grade one classes, so this year we have more sets of twins than we do grade one classes,” he said. “We’ve actually had a bit of fun with it and the parents have helped us out with easy ways to tell them apart, like markings on hats etc.” He said all the pupils had fitted in well. “The excitement of day one is generally pretty much on show for everyone to see,” he said. Mr Russell credited the school’s prep teachers for the smooth transition. “The teaching staff in prep classrooms and the way they can work really quickly with those kids to develop welcoming relationships is a credit to them.” Tate Papworth

Ground swap on the cards By Ewen McRae Two local soccer clubs are likely to switch grounds in order to keep up with the growth of the sport in the area. The Westside Strikers, who are based at Brookside Reserve, and the Springhills Soccer Club (Taylors Hill Reserve) will switch homes under a proposal endorsed by Melton council last week to try and meet the future needs of both clubs. Both clubs are supportive of the proposal,

however the Sydenham Hillside Cricket Club, which uses Taylors Hill Recreation Reserve for some of its games, has objected to the switch because it could lose a turf wicket in the future as soccer continues to grow. The council is presently developing a soccer strategy, which officers have flagged could lead to three soccer pitches being created at Taylors Hill Reserve, possibly removing a turf cricket oval. If this happens, the cricket club would have to play games at three different venues.

The switch plan comes after the Strikers, who have more than 450 participants, applied for more changerooms to be added to planned upgrades of the Brookside Reserve pavilion in order to meet future demand at the club. Melton council community services general manager Maurie Heaney told last week’s council meeting the switch was the best outcome. “I think it’s a win-win overall,” Mr Heaney said.

“It does come with some frustration from the cricket club, so there is not 100 per cent agreement, but we’re putting forward what we think is the best option at the minute. “From an officers’ point of view, this proposal would increase participation for football activity, mainly at Brookside … and relieve pressure on the turf oval at Brookside, and it provides more opportunities for soccer.” The council endorsed the ground switch, but added a commitment to retain the two cricket pitches at Taylors Hill Reserve.

Green light for childcare centre By Ewen McRae Melton council has approved plans for a new childcare centre in Brookfield, despite a number of objections from residents and councillors. The council last week considered the application for a new centre on Clarkes Road, Brookfield, which when completed, would have space for 90 children, with council officers recommending the single storey centre be approved. The council’s planning services manager Bob Baggio said the majority of the 24 community objections were about commercial intrusion into a residential area, and also concerns over

congestion, but said a recent VCAT decision on a similar childcare centre in the area backed the council officers recommendation. “We generally consider childcare centres, even though they’re not a residential use, they’re considered to be a use which is compatible to a residential area,â€? Mr Baggio said. “There was a similar application that was considered by council last year ‌ which was

taken to VCAT, who supported council’s recommendation to approve the application. “In their determination, VCAT said a child care centre provides a valuable community service and is a needed and necessary offering in today’s society. Councillor Ken Hardy raised an alternate motion to deny the application, saying the road services in the area would not cope with the increased traffic. “There is a premise in planning that you don’t make things worse than it already is. The road is single and will not take the traffic. We know this as we’ve seen it in other areas. Cr Bob Turner said it was important for more

Morning brew diverted from landfill Melbourne has a strong reputation for its coffee, but with that comes a growing number of takeaway coffee cups ending up in landfill. To help combat the issue, CS Square shopping centre has introduced a recycling system to dispose of cups used in the centre. Recyling bins shaped as coffee cups will be highly visible throughout the mall in a move centre manager Rod Kennedy said was the result of community feedback. “We have listened to our community’s concern for the environment and their desire for local businesses to be more sustainable, he said. “CS Square has adopted this initiative to increase its recycling capacity and become a more environmentally sustainable centre. The scheme, dubbed Simply Cups began in 2017. It is Australia’s largest cup recycling program and has diverted more than eight million cups from landfill overall, with more than 800,000 cups collected in October 2019 alone. The collected cups are turned into new products such as car park wheel stops, roadside kerbing and recycled furniture. The program is run by Closed Loop and the company’s managing director Robert Pascoe said it was fantastic to be teaming up with CS Square. “Closed Loop is excited to have CS Square join the Simply Cups program, he said. “We hope that one day all Australian shopping centres will recycle coffee cups. “With early adopters such as CS Square leading the way, we believe we can make coffee cup recycling more common.

childcare centres to be introduced to the region in order to keep up with growth. “We have to look to the future, Cr Turner said. “There are 45 babies born every week in Melton, that’s two kindergarten classes, and this small centre will have places for 90 children, so four classrooms. “Instead of denying services that we need in Melton, we should be encouraging the quicker duplication of this road, because it will happen. I can’t see any reason to deny this. The alternate motion was defeated by six votes to three, and the childcare centre was subsequently approved.

Melton to honour firies Melton council will make a sizeable donation to the ongoing bushfire appeal, and is also planning a special thank you for local firefighters who have assisted at the fire front. The council last week endorsed a $20,000 donation to the Victorian Bushfire Appeal, after mayor Lara Carli raised the idea as a notice of motion at last week’s meeting. A subsequent motion from Cr Sophie Ramsey was also passed, which will see council hold a reception for firefighters and emergency workers and volunteers from the municipality to acknowledge their contribution in responding to the recent bushfires across the country. The event will be held at a later time when the bushfire season has eased. Cr Carli said she was proud of the efforts of locals in assisting in the recovery from the devastating bushfires. “I want to thank our emergency services workers, she said. “I was also really touched to see our community members and how they rallied together. I have seen people opening up their houses, and taking donations and driving them down to Gippsland, so I really want to say thank you to all the City of Melton community for what they’ve done. Cr Ramsey paid tribute to the Melton community members who have helped the fire efforts in any way. “To everybody involved with the fire, to everybody that’s fundraised, and to everybody that’s selflessly gone to assist in any small way, thank you, Cr Ramsey said. Firefighters near and far are set for a boost, after the Eynesbury Homestead’s Australia Day fundraiser saw a fantastic community response. The Homestead – which is run by the Resimax Group – held a special event on January 26, with food trucks, multiple bars, a waterslide and other kids’ activities, as well as live music all day bringing a bumper crowd. Fundraisers were held throughout the afternoon, with $13,650 raised for the Victorian Bushfire Appeal and the Eynesbury CFA Brigade. The funds will be evenly split between the two. Resimax Group chief executive, Steve Hooker said it was inspiring to see the community come together to help out in a time of need.

“The Australia Day get-together provided a chance for us to give back and help support those that have been impacted by the ongoing bushfire crisis,” Mr Hooker said. “We are really proud of the money that was raised by our local community, which will be donated to the Victorian Bushfire Appeal and the Eynesbury Fire Brigade.” Eynesbury CFA captain Jim Cooper expressed his thanks for the donation in a post on the brigade’s Facebook page. “Words can not express the gratitude our Brigade has for this enormous gesture,” he said. “These needed funds will go a long way to ensuring we as a brigade look after this beautiful community.” Ewen McRae

Rally for harness legend The name Gavin Lang is synonymous with the harness racing community, and that same community is now rallying to help him in his time of need. The Bacchus Marsh reinsman, a legend of the sport with thousands of winners, is fighting a rare form of Lymphoma. His health battle has prompted an outpouring of support from the racing fraternity. A GoFundMe fundraiser set up to help Lang get the intensive three-month treatment he needs, which is only available in America, raised more than $85,000 in less than two weeks. Fellow driver Chris Alford was just a kid when he first met Lang. Alford grew up watching Lang race and then competed against him for years. He said Lang meant a lot to the harness racing community. “I’ve always looked up to him and respected him as a driver and as a person,” Alford said. “He’s always a very hard competitor, but great off the track as well. A pretty reserved man, not too extravagant, but once you get to know him he’s just a really nice guy. “You have to push yourself to be as good as you can be when driving against him, and you just have to see the outpouring of donations to know how much he means to racing. “As one of the leading drivers for the past 40 years he’s a revered figure. People are always sending him well wishes or donating what they can to help him out. “We had a raffle recently of some of his colours – the colours sold for about $6000 and the helmet cover about $2500 – every little bit helps. “We’re all thinking of him at the moment.” Harness Racing Victoria chairman Dale

Monteith also expressed his support for Lang as the fundraising continued. “Gavin Lang is a champion of our industry and I speak for everyone at HRV when I say to Gavin and his family our sincere thoughts and prayers are with you all during this time,” he said.

While the Lang family is keeping its battles private, Mr Lang’s wife, Meagan, thanked everyone for their ongoing support. “Thank you everyone for your continued messages and support, we are quite humbled by it all,” Ms Lang said. Details: www.gofundme.com/f/group-1-gav

Switch flicked on NBN Properties in Hillside and Truganina will be among the next to be switched over to the National Broadband Network this month. While a number of houses and businesses have already made the switch, remaining properties will have to change over soon as copper-based phone and internet services will begin to be disconnected from February 14. Head of NBN Local Victoria, Matt Evans said it was important for those who rely heavily on phone and internet services to make the switch. “This is the final stage of the transition to the NBN access network and brings the community closer to fully embracing the benefits of fast broadband,” Mr Evans said. “It’s particularly important for anyone with a medical alarm, auto-dialler or emergency call button to register these devices on NBN Co’s Medical Alarm. “Some devices may not be compatible with the NBN access network.” Mr Evans also warned residents to look out for scammers pretending to collect payment on behalf of NBN Co. “NBN Co is a wholesale-only company and does not take money direct from consumers. “We never make unsolicited calls, request remote access to a resident’s computer or door knock to sell broadband services to the public.” Ewen McRae

Servo plans headed to VCAT By Ewen McRae The applicant behind a proposed service station and restaurant at the Gisborne Road exit of the Western Highway has warned the project operators will “walk” if an agreement can’t be reached with Moorabool council over operating hours. The application is headed to a compulsory conference at the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) after the council last week endorsed advocating for a revised planning application for the project. The original application for the Bacchus

Marsh site included two restaurants, however councillors want to remove one of the restaurants, reduce the opening hours on weekends, and add provisions for an electric vehicle charging station. A spokesperson for the applicant told the council meeting that while they were open to removing one restaurant, the reduction in opening hours would make the business unviable. “The alternative proposal is for 7am to 12 midnight trading on Saturday and Sundays,” the spokesman said. “If that could be amended to 6am to midnight, as is the case Monday to Friday, that would be acceptable. Without that

minor amendment of one hour, the project operators walk. “There is a demonstrated need for customers to buy fuel at 6am, so without that amended opening time the proposal cannot proceed.” The applicant said more than 50 jobs could be created as part of the development. A number of community objections to the project were heard at the council meeting, citing concerns about safety and traffic congestion. Meanwhile, Melton council has approved plans for a new petrol station near Rockbank. The council last week endorsed the station at the Leakes Road exit of the Western Highway,

near the Woodlea estate. It will include a convenience store, playground, and four fuel bowsers. The council’s planning services manager Bob Baggio said there were eight objections from residents to the station, and he was confident concerns over noise, traffic and potential disruptions to a residential area could be allayed. “We believe that, given it’s a fairly discrete development, it’s separated from the residential properties, and there’s no direct access to the station from the residential properties, we consider the potential for detriment to the amenity of the surrounding residents to be fairly low.”

Author hits the shelves Wayne Marshall first started writing short stories at one of the lowest points of his life – seven years later he has launched his first book. Marshall, 39, said he has always been a writer, penning songs in bands in his youth, but first started creating short stories when he was receiving treatment for bowel cancer in 2013. The Bacchus Marsh man said it was his own personal form of therapy. “Writing was something to get me through the darkness of that time,” Marshall said. “Especially the humerous stories I wrote, they really helped pull me out of what I was going through … it was just for me at the time and I had no intention publishing them in a book. “There’s a few stories in the book that touch on the cancer experience, and that old thing about laughter being the best medicine rings true. I wasn’t thinking of getting them

published so I felt really free when I was writing those.” Shirl, is a collection of bizarre and funny slices of Australiana, mixed with themes of community, masculinity, irony and tenderness. “There are 14 stories in there, with a bit of satire, humour, and also some more serious stories sprinkled throughout to give it a bit of balance,” Marshall said said. “It’s very Australian. I’ve grown up in Melton and now live in Bacchus Marsh so this is what I’ve grown up with. “The stories spring from that, just with some weird twists along the way. Marshall will launch his book Shirl at the Bacchus Marsh library from 12.30pm on February 15. The book is also available for sale at QBD in Melton. Ewen McRae

Push to boost vaccine uptake By Ewen McRae The Cancer Council is calling on more school children to take up the free HPV vaccine at the start of the year, with figures showing up to a quarter of eligible children are not taking advantage of the program. The vaccine – which protects against human papillomavirus – is provided free in schools to all year 7 students under the National HPV Vaccination Program, and can prevent cervical and other cancers, and other HPV-related diseases.

The National HPV Vaccination Program has been immunising adolescent girls since 2007 and was extended to boys in 2013. Data released by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare shows that in Melbourne’s north west health network there is a 75.9 per cent uptake of the vaccine among boys, and a 79.7 per cent uptake among girls. In the western health network, the uptake is the same for girls, but slips to 74.1 per cent for boys. Cancer Council Victoria immunisation manager Kate Broun said while vaccination rates are in line with the state average, it is

important that all eligible teens participate in the HPV Vaccination Program. “It is fantastic that lots of parents are choosing to protect their children, but there is still work to be done to ensure that all teens have the opportunity to complete the free vaccine course and protect themselves against

cancer-causing HPV,” Ms Broun said. “The vaccine is most effective when given at age 12-13. Two injections are needed, with the second dose administered 6-12 months after the first. We are urging parents to sign the vaccine consent form and ensure their teen receives both doses for the best protection.” Since the HPV vaccination program was introduced in 2007, there has been a 93 per cent reduction in the two most serious HPV types, as well as a 70 per cent reduction in the incidence of pre-cancerous cervical abnormalities in women under 20.

Cases full of bargains The Melton amphitheatre will be a hive of activity later this month, with the chance to snap up a bargain at the Suitcase Bric-A-Brac Sale. The first event in January attracted more than 150 people to peruse the 17 stalls on the day. The February 23 event is set to be even bigger, with buyers able to pick up vintage clothing, handmade goods, books, pre-loved items, records, and artwork. Melton council advocacy and engagement manager Sean McManus said it was set for another fun day. “It’s a fun day out for everyone and a sustainable way to shop, so come down to find a bargain or a treasure in a suitcase,” Mr McManus said. “If you’re a maker, small business or just want to sell pre-loved stuff, then pack a suitcase or two, register and join us at the amphitheatre.

“This is one of a number of public events at the amphitheatre and is an excellent opportunity for the community to make the most of the shopping, dining and social spaces in the Melton Town Centre. “Sellers must register ahead of the event [$10 per stall] and can only sell from their suitcase – please no gazebos, fold-out tables or clothing racks. Picnic blankets and chairs welcome.” The day will also feature food stalls and music from DJ Dozza, and will run from 8am to noon. Details: melton.vic.gov.au/suitcasesale. Ewen McRae

The rapid growth of property portal realestateview.com.au (REV) has continued, with the appointment of Antony Catalano as a board member. Mr Catalano and his business partner, billionaire investor Alex Waislitz, who acquired Australia Community Media (ACM) last year, now hold the largest interest in realestateview. com.au, with an economic stake of 26 per cent. REV is the third largest property portal in Australia. Its audience has grown by more than 40 per cent over the past 12 months. Realestateview.com.au chief executive Tony Balazs said the business had undergone a period of rapid transformation. “The opportunity to work with ACM and extend our brand through their network is a clear vote of confidence for the work we’ve been doing. The opportunity will allow us to further grow our audience and deliver improved results for our customers,” he said. “Antony has an impressive track record of rapidly growing media businesses, particularly in the real estate category. I feel confident that realestateview.com.au will grow its market value immensely by becoming part of Antony’s cross-platform media network.” Mr Catalano’s appointment to the board follows the launch of realestateview.com.au and CoreLogic’s price estimator late last year. Mr Catalano said realestateview.com.au had a range of industry attractions but its most valuable asset was it’s highly engaged audience. “This audience, coupled with the ability to deliver advertising solutions at speed, presents a compelling opportunity to create

Price: $499,900 - $549,000

MELTON SOUTH 54 Wilson Road, 3338 Private sale

YPA Melton: 9746 8899

Price: $365,000 - $395,000

Auction: February 15 at 1pm

Surrounded by outdoor spaces designed for genuinely easy upkeep (a broom the only ‘tool’ needed for extensive concrete and synthetic turf), this residence on about 560 square metres is ready and waiting for new owners to move right in. It has four fitted bedrooms, two off the entry hall and others sharing a short hallway with main bathroom and separate toilet. The street-facing main bedroom has walk-in robe and ensuite. The spacious living domain incorporates the kitchen, where an island brekkie bench for four is the focal point. Cabinetry is in the same mid-grey shade as bathrooms, splashback tiles are white, there’s a cupboard pantry, and the stainless-steel cooker is 900mm wide. The nearby laundry, with closet, is access point to the double garage. A massive Colorbond shed is a huge perk, as are CCTV cameras, intercom alarm, ducted heating and a split-system.

This property would make an excellent starter for young couples and first-home buyers, and investors will also be interested. Set on about 595 square metres, it is in walking distance of all-level schools, shops and train station. There are four bedrooms (five if study is counted), one downstairs an optional main with robes and two-way ensuite. The three up top include another main bedroom with robes and ensuite. The shared bathroom is large, the toilet separate. A carpeted lounge which links with the tiled family-meals space and kitchen with timber cabinetry, dishwasher, gas cooktop and underbench oven. Archways, exposed brickwork and a steeply pitched ceiling point to the home’s heritage, while wall paint is a lovely shade of grey. A spacious covered alfresco area is fenced off from the back garden with an above-ground pool. A carport and lock-up garage are included.

MADDINGLEY 6 Dogherty Court, 3340 YPA Melton: 9746 8899

Price: $419,000 - $449,000

Still looking like new, this family-friendly abode sits on a great-sized block of about 655 square metres, which means a backyard kids and pets will love, with room left over for other projects. The house has grey carpet, off-white floor tiles, and white roller blinds on all windows – palette that’s easy to work with, décor-wise. Three of the four fitted bedrooms run down the western side, and flank the main bathroom, separate toilet and laundry. The main bedroom, along the entry hall, has a walk-in robe, and an ensuite with semi-recessed basin, and vanity cabinetry in the same shade as the kitchen. A carpeted open lounge room is along the entry hall, the spot to set up the kids with a movie or relax with friends, while the tiled living hub is right at the back. The kitchen, with a brekkie bench for at least four, has mid-grey cabinetry and white splashback tiles, a cupboard pantry and stainless- steel dishwasher, underbench oven and gas cooktop. Ducted heating, plus a split-system, deliver effective temperature control. A wedge of concrete out back awaits a pergola, which would take advantage of the northerly aspect. Gardening has started, with ornamental shrubs planted along the back fence. The property has a double garage with internal access, and there’s potential to add side gates for backyard entry. Bacchus Marsh West Golf Club and racecourse reserve are a 10-minute amble down the road. 12 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY Tuesday, 11 February, 2020

crook and I was a bit worried at the time. “It’s more common in cattle and sheep. It’s a snail and it attacks their liver – he was very sick and we nearly lost him a couple of times there.” Chircop, who trains from Parwan, said a tilt at the country cups circuit was among the future plans for the son of Courage Under Fire.

It was one of the more memorable Victorian racetrack debuts in recent times and it has Burrumbeet trainer Mick Stanley dreaming big with exciting two-year-old Soho Lanikai. While the horse’s 65metre victory in the Allied Express Premiere Stakes at Tabcorp Park Melton on Saturday night was visually stunning, the clock backed up the horse’s dominance. The son of Somebeachsomewhere, owned by strong stable supporter Rob Watson, rated a slick 1.54.0 mile rate in defeating the previously unbeaten Ultimate Exclusive and Im Lady Madeleine over the 1720m trip. “We expected him to win, but at the trials he was very green and had a good look around and was sort of a bit dorky,” Stanley, who gave the drive to Ryan Duff y due to commitments at Globe Derby, said. “Our only concern going into the race was if he raced a bit green and had a good look around like he did at the trials, but he didn’t do any of that and what he did at the trials, he benefited a lot from.” Stanley said the heats of the Bathurst Gold Crown would likely be the next assignment for the horse on March 20, with a hopeful run in the Group 1 final a week later. Soho Lanikai was purchased at the Melbourne Australian Pacing Gold sales and is also eligible for that upcoming series. Another highlight on Saturday night’s card was the brilliant return to racing of Mick Chircop-trained General Dodge. In his first competitive race since June 2018, the seven-year-old proved too good in the Hygain Pace (1720m, NR 80-99) after sitting three-wide in the latter stages. He rated 1.53.8 and beat a quality field including Emma

19 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY Tuesday, 11 February, 2020

SPORT Centrals look to finals after big win over Kangaroos Melton Centrals have sealed their finals spot in the Cricket Victoria Women’s Community Cricket north west B one-day competition. After a slow start to the 2019-20 season in which they were unable to defend their T20 title, Centrals have started to hit some form. After seven rounds they sit second in the one-day competition, percentage behind Geelong. With two rounds remaining they are 15 points clear of fifth, meaning they can’t be knocked out of the four. Centrals captain-coach Candace Hulett said they were starting to play some good cricket. “The girls started off the year a bit slow,” she said. “We didn’t play our best cricket. “We had some new players and the team wasn’t gelling together properly. “Everyone is starting to pull together as a team and there’s been some good performances by everyone.” Centrals’ core group the past couple of years has returned as they take further steps in their development.

They have also picked up Katrina Hoenig, from Gisborne, who has added more experience to the side. There’s also some players completely new to the sport. “It makes my job more exciting,” Hulett said. “Seeing them learn every week. “One of the girls hadn’t played anything but tennis before.” Hulett said the younger players continued to improve, with top order batter Tara Keenan a standout. The development of the playing group has meant that Hulett, who has played premier cricket, can slip down the order. She said it was good to be able to give everyone else a go. Hulett said that finals were the aim for the side, with plenty of motivation from within the group. The top four teams make finals. “Missing out on the T20 final hurt a bit,” she said. “There’s also the disappointment from losing the semi-final last year in the one-dayers.

“The group is using hurt to drive them this season. To make the top four and make finals, and ultimately the grand final, that is the goal.” On Sunday, Centrals beat Greenvale Kangaroos convincingly. Centrals made 9-113 from their overs, before restricting the Kangaroos to 9-75. Hulett was the pick of the bowlers for Centrals with three wickets. Centrals this week face Essendon Maribyrnong Park-Williamstown Congs. St Anthony’s moved into the top four without a ball being bowled on Sunday. The Saints took home the points against Essendon Maribyrnong Park-Williamstown Congs after the Congs forfeited. The Saints sit percentage ahead of Hoppers Crossing and will this week take on the Kangaroos. In other results, Coburg beat Hoppers Crossing and Geelong was too good for Plenty Valley. Tara Murray

Saints break through By Tara Murray St Anthony’s has kept its hopes of staying in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association McIntyre Cup alive with its first win of the season. While there was a lot of attention on the two top four match-ups at the weekend, the battle between the bottom two sides, the Saints and Riddell, was just as interesting. The Bombers came away with the win when the two teams met earlier in the season, but it was the Saints turn this time round. Saints captain-coach Cam Clayton said there was a lot of relief after they picked up the last wicket to secure the win. “The boys were pretty excited,” he said. “It’s been tough at times this season and we’ve looked to play young guys. We were hoping to win a couple of games and be competitive. “We’re still going about it the same way and want to be as competitive as possible. “It’s taken 12 rounds to get there, so we were relieved to take the 10th wicket.” The match, which was originally scheduled to be a two-day game, was changed to a one-dayer on Saturday. The Saints elected to bat and made 6-215 off their 40 overs. Clayton said for a one-day match it was a good score, so they were in a good position. The Saints shared the runs around, with Clayton top scoring with 62. Ryan Dobbie, Paul Scott and Ben Ingham all made contributions. Clayton said the key for them had been to bat out all of their innings, to give themselves a chance of posting a competitive score. Early in the Bombers innings, Clayton thought that they could be in for a long day in the field. “We were unsure how they were going to approach it, with 215 a good score in a one-dayer. “We started off pretty bad and they got 17 off the first over and we were thinking ‘would our score be enough?’” The Saints bowlers responded with some tight bowling and the wickets started to flow. They bowled the Bombers out for 103. The bowlers shared the wickets around with Warren Turner taking three, while Jason Craven and Alex Kerr took two wickets each. The win moves the Saints off the bottom of the ladder. They sit 4.64 points clear of Riddell. Clayton said they know that the battle to avoid bottom spot and relegation will go down to the final round. In other results, Diggers Rest Bulla fell short

in the top of the table clash with Gisborne. The Burras were bowled out for 165, with the Dragons making 3-166. Bacchus Marsh and Sunbury United had a

Bacchus Marsh in thrilling tie with Sunbury Bacchus Marsh let slip an opportunity to put a claim on third spot, as the Bulls played out a tie with Sunbury United in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association McIntyre Cup. The Bulls were in control for much of the game, but United fought back late to take it down to the final over. The Bulls needed eight runs off the final over and ultimately two runs off the final ball. They could only get one and tied the game. United made 8-133 before the Bulls made 7-133. Bulls captain-coach James Lidgett said it was a disappointing result. “We bowled really well,” he said. “We kept it tight throughout most of the game and we would have taken that score any day of the week. “We had a pretty good start with the bat and let it slip. United bowled really well after the drinks break.” Three wickets down at the drinks break, Lidgett said they would have backed themselves in most times to get the runs. He gave credit to the United bowlers and the job they did to restrict them. Lidgett top scored with 35. The result all but ends the Bulls chances of finishing second, with the battle to finish third one to watch. United sits third on 64.56 just ahead of the Bulls on 64.27. Lidgett said the match was a big one in the context of the season. The Bulls finish their season against Riddell and second-placed Diggers Rest Bulla. Lidgett said facing Diggers Rest Bulla in the final round would be the perfect tune-up to finals. “The match showed how close it is between us and it’s going to be really tight,” he said. “Every run and wicket will count.” Diggers Rest Bulla remains in second spot despite a loss to top side Gisborne, while St Anthony’s is off the bottom of the ladder after beating Riddell. In-form bowlers keep Melton’s finals hopes alive Melton kept its finals hopes alive in Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association east-west competition with a big win against Croydon on Saturday. After a disappointing result in the previous round, the Lions needed to take the points on Saturday against the bottom side if they want to play finals. The match was the only one in the division to get some play on day one last week, but was reverted to a one-dayer on Saturday. The Lions set the match up, as they have so many times this season, with the bat. They made 6-216 from their overs to put themselves in a good position. Lions director of coaching Anthony Gale said while they would have liked one of the top order to go on with a big score, they were pretty happy with the performance. “It was a good, even performance,” he said. “We had four or five players chip in between 30 and 45. It was a really quick ground and it was beautifully presented.”

Nathan Taylor top scored with 45, while Ben MacRae made 43. Gale said the score was about par on that ground. He said heading into the field they were full of confidence that they could get the job done. The Lions bowling attack has been their strength all season and kept them in many matches. On Saturday, the Lions bowled Croydon out for 189. Jake Charge took three wickets, with Gale saying it was an even bowling performance. “It was a hard-fought win,” he said. “We kept getting wickets when we needed them. We were able to do something special, like run-out at times, when we needed it as well. “We bowled and fielded really well, and our bowlers are in good form.” The Lions sit in eighth spot, three points outside the top six, with two rounds remaining. From fifth through to 10th, there are just

nine points separating the sides. The Lions face Noble Park in a two-dayer and then Yarraville in the final round in a one-dayer. Gale said they need to win both games. “We might be looking back and thinking ‘if only’,” he said. “If we can get two wins you never know what will happen with the other sides [in finals contention]. “We still have a sniff. If everyone contributes we can match it with most sides.” The Lions second XI moved up to fourth place after also beating Croydon. The Lions bowled Croydon out for 126, with Brandon McGee taking three wickets. The opening partnership between Lucas Alaimo (56) and Gale (51 not out) set up the run chase. The Lions finished 2-127. Falcons’ solid showing By Tara Murray Caroline Springs put together a solid batting performance as it looks to keep its finals hopes alive in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association division 4 Charles Clark Shield competition. Sitting outside the top four, the Falcons need to win both their remaining matches and hope other results go their way. The Falcons took a big step toward getting the first of those wins, with a strong first day against Williamstown Congs. The Falcons were bowled out in the 76th over for 207. Falcons skipper Kany Twentyman said the score could have been more. “Gayashan Weerasekara and Avidu Fernando batted really well after we got off to a shaky start,” he said. “They have been consistent for us. “We were two down at tea and were primed to make 230-plus. We had a little bit of a late collapse. “Kane Sevior was unavailable and we lacked a bit of batting strength towards the tail.”

Twentyman said it was good to see a couple of the young players down the order get time in the middle. Lachlan McArthur, who still plays in under-15s and Flynn Rice, who still plays under-17s, both made contributions. Twentyman said some weeks they were having as many as five players under-20 in the team. “We go week-in, week-out playing quite an inexperienced team. “We rock up with three to five guys under-20 each week. They certainly aren’t making up the numbers and are getting an opportunity in the first XI.” Twentyman said they backed their bowlers in to do the job this week. The Congs will resume at 0-0 after facing one over late on day one. Twentyman said they know they need some luck to go their way if they’re to sneak into finals. They are in seventh spot, six points outside the top. “We have to win the last two games to give

ourselves a chance and we’re doing absolutely everything we can. We’ve beaten first and third, so we’re not too far away,” he said. “It looks like Footscray United will get over Grand United and that doesn’t help us. [But] Stranger things have happened.” Twentyman said if they were to miss out on finals, the five draws from no-results due to weather this season would be what costs them. “We’re not getting on the park consistently enough,” he said. Sixth-placed Melton Centrals are in trouble against Maribyrnong Park St Marys. Centrals made 123, with St Marys 3-63 in reply. Like the Falcons, Centrals have to win to make finals. In division 3, Sydenham-Hillside is in control against West Newport. The Storm made 5-243 on the back of 87 from president Warren Hackney. In division 5, Melton South Royals is staring down the barrel of defeat against Moonee Valley. The Royals were bowled out for 117, with Moonee Valley 6-104 in reply.

Darley is keeping its cards close to its chest in the lead-up to the Ballarat Football League season. The Devils have been one of the quieter teams on the recruiting front and are yet to announce any recruits. New Devils coach Dan Roy said they were happy with how things were coming along. “It’s been pretty minimal, who we have recruited,” he said. “We didn’t need too much, recruitment-wise. We’re close to fulfilling what we wanted to achieve.” The Devils have lost Graham brothers, Brian and Nick, in a big loss for the club. Roy said they would be big shoes to fill, but he thought they had been able to fill those spots. He said having Tom Evans and Leigh Spiteri available from the start of the season would be like having two new players in the side. In a bonus for the Devils, Roy, a premiership player with the club, is set to pull on the boots again. “I haven’t missed a session,” he said. “I played a few games last year and feel nice and refreshed and the knee is feeling good.” Roy said there had been good numbers at training, with the side returning two weeks ago after the Christmas break. He said there was plenty of motivation in the side after a disappointing end to last season, when theywere knocked out in the opening week of finals. “They’ve been really motivated. They have standards at the club and feel that they underachieved last season,” Roy said. “The boys are keen to make amends.” Roy, who spent last season at Lorne, said he was enjoying being back at Darley and taking on a senior coaching role for the first time. “It’s certainly one of my favourite places and I really wanted to come back,” he said. “I get along with everyone really well. “Coaching doesn’t leave your mind. It was something that I needed to do, to prove that I can do it. “I’ve had opportunities to step up on other occasions and lacked confidence. This is the perfect place to do it.” The Devils kick off their season on April 18 against North Ballarat City. Tara Murray

Renault Koleos big, bold SUV By Alistair Kennedy, Marque Motoring

AT A GLANCE MODEL RANGE

Koleos is the largest of the three-model Renault SUV range ahead of the small Captur and the recently-launched mid-size Kadjur. A product of the alliance between the French automotive giant and its Japanese partner Nissan, Koleos sits on the same platform and shares its 2.5-litre engine and transmission with the Nissan X-Trail. Koleos is offered in three spec levels, Life, Zen and Intens but now only with petrol power, the previous diesel option being dropped. Life and Zen are both front-wheel drive with the Intens also available with drive to all four wheels.

Life 2.5-litre petrol 2WD: $32,490 (CVT automatic) Zen 2.5-litre petrol 2WD: $35,990 (CVT automatic) Intens 2.5-litre petrol AWD: $42,990 (CVT automatic)

Note: These prices do not include government or dealer delivery charges. Contact your local Renault dealer for drive-away prices.

Styling While the overall shape of the Koleos matches that of the X-Trail the Renault has a much bolder grille highlighted by a large version of the brand’s distinctive diamond badge in the centre. The MY2020 Koleos gets some extra chrome trim, new alloy wheels and skid plates along with LED fog lamps. Twin chrome exhaust pipes add a semi-sporty touch.

Interior Koleos only comes with five seats unlike the X-Trail which has a third-row. There’s enough rear space in all directions for three adults to travel in comfort. With two rear passengers the central armrest can be folded to reveal twin drink holders. There’s good volume of storage space with 458 litres when the rear seatbacks are in place, extending to 1690 litres when they are folded. There’s a full-size spare below the boot floor.

Safety Safety is a big selling point for Koleos with

Sound in the Life and Zen comes from an eight-speaker Arkamys 3D system. Intens steps up to an 11-speaker Bose system with subwoofer and digital amplifier.

a high level of standard equipment across the range including six airbags; ABS brakes with emergency brake assist and electronic brakeforce distribution; forward collision warning; autonomous emergency braking; electronic stability control; hill-start assist; lane departure warning; IsoFix child seat anchors; reversing camera; rear parking sensors; tyre pressure monitoring; height adjustable headlights; and front and rear foglights. Zen adds front and side parking sensors; automatic ‘walk-away’ door locking and blind spot monitoring while the Intens tops off the safety package with Easy Park Assist and optional all-wheel drive.

Engines / transmissions Only one powertrain is offered, a 2.5-litre naturally-aspirated four-cylinder unit with peaks of 126 kW at 6000 rpm and 226 Nm at 4400 revs mated to continuously variable transmission. The AWD Intens has three drive options: 2WD, Auto and Lock controlled by a switch on the centre console.

Infotainment Koleos gets Renault’s latest R-Link 2 system for its infotainment technology. The premium Intens model displays onto an 8.7-inch tablet-style portrait touchscreen with the Life and Zen getting a 7.0-inch portrait screen.

Getting in and out is comfortable without too much bending or head scraping. The driver’s seat is wide, supportive and comfortable. The steering wheel is both tilt and reach adjustable. Koleos is a capable enough vehicle with good, but unexciting, performance. We found it needed a bit of urging to climb steepish hills without losing momentum although there is a pre-set manual mode to assist the CVT. Suspension is a little harsh and relatively firm without making the ride uncomfortable. Steering is light and direct. On the motorway segment of our test route the Koleos cruised comfortably despite its fairly modest outputs. Fuel consumption is listed at 8.1 litres per 100 kilometres for the Zen. We averaged 9.2 L/100 km during our week in the Zen, acceptable enough for a fairly large SUV.
