For more than 15 years, Katie Pigott has been the smiling face greeting train commuters at Melton station, serving the all important first coffee of the day. But this week that will come to an end, with Ms Pigott ending her tenure at the station kiosk after V/Line decided not to renew her contract. It’s something she said she’s still wrapping her head around. “I’m excited because we were already looking to sell the business, but the way it happened was not great,” Ms Pigott said. “I approached [V/Line] towards the end of last year to get a new lease so I could sell my business, and they were positive about that. But on January 7 they handed me eviction notices instead because I was on a month-to-month lease. “It was like someone had ripped my heart out. It’s been a massive part of my life, and I’ve dedicated my life to this. It’s my love.” While she is disappointed with the way it finished, Ms Pigott said she was thankful for the journey that began back in 2004, and has been one of the enduring parts of her life. “I was a train traveller, and I knew the old owners who were looking to retire so I took over,” she said. “Back then it was just a kettle, one power point, rat-infested, so we put a lot of work in to get it to what it is now. “Each day would start at 3.30am, load up the car and come here, park in my same spot every day and start getting ready for the first passengers. “I’ve made the best of friends here, life long friends. We’ve been to weddings, funerals, baby showers, birthdays; my customers have just been beautiful and they’ve left some lovely messages since the word got out I was finishing. “It’s been great sending the people of Melton off with a smile on their face every day.” Since starting the business with her husband Kris, the family has now grown to include boys Cooper, 13, and Marshal, 10. And they will be forever tied to the kiosk. “I actually went into labour with Cooper while I was here,” Ms Pigott said. “It was a Friday afternoon and I felt it start, so I collected my stuff and he came Monday morning. I was back in the kiosk in about eight weeks I think.” While there are no concrete plans for the future, husband Kris said they were looking forward to the change. A spokesperson for V/Line said: “We’re currently investigating more flexible options for passengers using Melton Station such as portable coffee carts.”

More houses selling for a profit By Ewen McRae Properties in Melton and Moorabool are among the most likely in Victoria to generate a profit, according to new data. The CoreLogic Pain and Gain Quarterly Review analysed the performance of property resales across the nation in the September quarter, and showed that 98.9 per cent of property sales in Moorabool resulted in a profit, making it the second highest performing council area in Victoria. Melton was also a strong performer, with

98.3 per cent of property sales bringing a profit – the third best in the state. YPA Melton sales director Shane Spiteri said the report was a true reflection of a market which had rebounded strongly from a period of downturn in 2018-19. “At the end of the day the market had to
correct itself, and that’s why we saw that downturn,” Mr Spiteri said. “The market has now recovered to where [prices] probably should be. They may not be as high as they were at the height of the property boom, but they are still affordable and people still see the Melton region as a good place to buy. “If you look at where it is located, you get more for your money here. We’re 45-minutes from the CBD, now if that was in Sydney you’d be paying close to $1 million, but here it’s $500,00-$600,000 and you get the same
quality.” The median profit for sales in Melton was $225,000, while for Moorabool the median profit was $219,500. Mr Spiteri said it was likely the market would continue to improve over the first half of 2020. “I don’t see it slowing down for the next six months, and after that we’ll wait and see,” he said. “There will be more first home owners looking to buy in the area, and the banks are getting a bit easier to deal with to make it more affordable for people to enter the market.”

Skirting around a short issue The Westside Saints Netball Club have broken a long held netball tradition and created a piece of history in the process. The Saints, a representative team out of the St Albans Caroline Springs Netball Association have become the first in the state to do away with skirts in favour of shorts. Tracy Wallace helped lead the way on the initiative and said it was a long time coming. “We started designing the shorts about six months ago with manufacturer BLK, had
samples made and had the girls try them on,” she said. “We actually had to go to Netball Victoria to change bylaws, which they were really good about … there were no problems there.” The shorts were debuted last Tuesday night and Ms Wallace said there was a strong reaction. “There were lots of people looking in shock when they saw them,” she said. “The main comment was that it looked like we were wearing training attire … that’s the
idea, it makes sense to train in the same sort of gear you play in.” Ms Wallace said more clubs will follow the Saints’ lead. “I guarantee that within 12 months others will start wearing them,” she said. “They’ll let the dust settle, then they’ll them roll out … especially when the Suncorp side the Queensland Firebirds wear them this year.”
Melton and Moorabool drivers have heeded the warning about drink and drug driving, with just two drivers caught during the recent long weekend. Police ran Operation Amity across the state on the Australia Day long weekend, targeting road behaviour, and detected just one driver in Melton over the legal alcohol limit, and one other with drugs in their system. There were no detections for drug or alcohol driving in Moorabool during the operation, which ran from January 24 to 27. Melton recorded 35 drivers over the speed limit, 10 seatbelt offences, seven unregistered vehicles, and eight disqualified or unlicensed drivers. In Moorabool there were 38 speeding offences, nine unregistered vehicles and two impoundments. Road Policing Command Assistant Commissioner Libby Murphy said police would continue to promote road safety throughout the year, and praised those drivers who helped keep offence numbers low. “Until the message sinks in for everyone, we’ll continue educating the community and enforcing where possible,” she said. “For each person who looked after their mate and stopped them making a poor decision, or who simply considered their own actions before driving, this is what saves lives. “I sincerely thank you for the part you have played in road safety.” Ewen McRae

Upgrades to Stan Payne Reserve in Diggers Rest are now underway, with the new facilities set to transform the area. The first sod was turned on the $800,000 project last week, with costs split evenly between Melton council and the state government’s Growing Suburbs Fund. Melton mayor Lara Carli and Sunbury MP Josh Bull were on hand for the sod turn, with Cr Carli saying the improvements would have a number of social and recreation benefits for local residents. “Upgrading this historically significant reserve will provide a wonderful space for the Diggers Rest community to enjoy,” she said.

SES calls for volunteers
Aintree gets connected
By Ewen McRae
The largest sewerage pump in the Western Water network is now operational, with the Aintree Sewer Pump Station starting up recently. The station pumps 185 litres of sewage per second and will help service the growing Aintree region. Western Water customer, community relations and operations manager, Graham Holt, said it was important to keep up with the growth and high demand in the area. “Aintree has a population of 3,500 and is growing fast,” Mr Holt said. “The pump station is critical new infrastructure, enabling homes to be connected directly to our sewer network and ensuring we meet the demand for essential sewer services. “Western Water spent $70 million in capital works in 2018-19 and is forecast to spend $82 million in 2019-20. We will continue to invest significantly to support our growing communities.” The station continues a string of recent openings for Western Water in the area, including a sewer pipe that connects into the Aintree Sewer Pump Station and the Deanside water main that will provide drinking water for new suburb. Both projects were completed in 2019. In 2018, Western Water built the Rockbank Sewage Pump Station; a new sewer pipeline from Rockbank to the Melton Recycled Water Plant; and a new water pipe along Leakes Road in Rockbank. Ewen McRae

They’re some of the first people called when help is needed around town, but now the Melton SES is calling for some help of its own. The local SES is doing a recruitment drive to boost numbers, with a busy summer of weather events, call-outs and community assistance highlighting the need for more volunteers. Melton SES section leader Karl Sass said while the unit had coped reasonably well over the summer, there was always a need for more help “We’re one of the busier units going around, and we’re getting busier every year,” Mr Sass said. “We probably average between 200 to 300 jobs every year, and this summer has been a particularly busy time for us as we kept up with some big weather events locally, but also providing operational support at the bushfires in Gippsland, and helping out in other areas. “We’ve got 22 members at the moment, but we need to make sure we keep up with demand in the area.” The Melton branch covers a wide area, from Melton to Burnside, and from Eynesbury to Toolern Vale, and with high population growth in the region, the group can sometimes be stretched. Mr Sass said there was a lot of training provided for all volunteers, and the benefits of helping the local community made the job very rewarding. “We have regular training on a Monday night, and all our volunteers get the chance to improve a wide range of skills,” he said. “Whether it’s basic first aid and CPR, or map reading, search and rescue, 4WD rescue, there’s a whole range of skills and experience that you can specialise in, so there’s no prior experience

Ready to rumble in US
Funding boost for Melton
By Ewen McRae Josh Fikret was just four-years-old when the world of wrestling captured his imagination, and more than two decades later he’s ready to pursue his dream in the big time. Fikret – who goes by the wrestling name JXT (short for Josh Extreme) – will soon head off to the US to showcase his wares for three months, hopeful of getting a contract with one of the big name wrestling organisations. For the Melton man, it’s been a long road to get to this point. “I was four-years-old when my cousin introduced me to WWF Warzone on the Playstation, and from that day forward I said I was going to be a wrestler,” he said. “I love everything about it. I love the emotion it brings out of people, and I think the reason kids cling on to it so much is that life can be stressful, and wrestling is like a movie that can take you away from everything and it’s a bit of an escape from reality. “My folks hated it with a passion in the early days, but once they saw there was no stopping me they let me go.” Fikret had to wait until he was 17 to get his first proper crack at wrestling, but in the past nine years it has taken him all over Australia, as well as to America a few times to compete. In 2018, he did 60 shows in Australia alone, and on February 15, he will have his final bout in Australia before flying out, as part of the Showdown Wrestling event at the Italian Sports Club in Werribee. “You’ve got to put everything in if you want to make it,” Fikret said. “I’m in the gym six days a week, plus wrestling workouts in the ring, and a show every week, so it’s pretty full on, but if you want to be good at it and make a living out of it like
Josh Fikret, aka JXT. (Supplied)
I’m hopeful of doing then you have to commit.” With shows booked in Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Alaska, and Florida in the next three months, Fikret has his eyes on the prize. “Hopefully this tour of the United States leads to something bigger, so I’m planning on going out with a bang in Werribee,” Fikret said.
NEWS
“It’s extremely hard to make it, and even harder as an Australian, but you have to have that belief in yourself if you’re going to succeed in this. “If it doesn’t happen this time, it will still happen. I’m sure of that.” Tickets to the Werribee event can be purchased at https://bit.ly/2O8myhU.
Three Melton projects have received a funding boost from the state government. Melton council secured $5.35 million from the government’s Growing Suburbs Fund, which will go towards the development of the Eynesbury Early Learning Centre, extension of the Brookside Community Pavilion, and an upgrade of the Melton Recycling Facility. Melton mayor Lara Carli said she was proud to partner with the state government so regularly on community infrastructure projects. “These projects will have immense health, environmental and social benefits for our residents, and I’m excited to see them become a reality,” Cr Carli said. “We have a great record of positive partnerships with the state government and I’m looking forward to continuing to work to deliver quality infrastructure that keeps pace with our city’s rapid population growth. “I’d like to thank the state government for their ongoing support through the Growing Suburbs Fund.” Melton council will also be contributing to the three projects, with $200,000 going towards the Eynesbury Early Learning Centre, $450,000 to the Brookside Community Pavilion extension, and $4.65 million to the Melton Recycling Facility. Local government Minister Adem Somyurek said it was exciting to see a broad range of projects helping to grow the outer suburbs. Ewen McRae

Gallery hunting for new home By Ewen McRae The popular B-Mac Gallery in Bacchus Marsh is on the hunt for a new home, after being forced out of its current location. The gallery has been operating out of a shop at The Village Shopping Centre since 2016 under a ‘peppercorn’ rent arrangement, but the growth of the centre in recent years has meant new retailers moving in and the arrangement with the centre has come to a close. The gallery is a major project of the Bacchus Marsh Arts Council, and secretary John Spain

said it was grateful to The Village for helping the space to run for so long. “Mixed feelings pretty much sums it up,” Mr Spain said. “We are so grateful to The Village management for their generosity to the local visual arts scene over several years. “We are happy that The Village continues
to thrive as a shopping centre and important community meeting place. But of course we now have the challenge of finding new premises and, hopefully, a similarly generous usage arrangement.” The gallery has held 35 exhibitions since it first opened, allowing a diverse mix of casual hobbyists through to professional artists an affordable space to exhibit and sell their work. The 2019 Christmas Show was the final exhibition at the Village space. Mr Spain said B-Mac Gallery has always been a community gallery, staffed by unpaid
volunteers and exhibiting artists. The arts council wants that model to continue. “We just cannot afford commercial rents if we are to keep the community gallery model,” Mr Spain said. “But we are in a similar position to where we were four years ago. Seeking a gallery space and figuring out ways to present visual art to our local and district communities. We are determined to succeed so watch this space.” Property owners or managers wishing to assist the arts council can contact John Spain on 0468 453 340 or by email at secretary@ bmaci.org.au
Milestone for athletics While the club has had times in its history when almost 500 kids would compete at the centre, it now has roughly 127 on the books, with hopes of growing that towards 200 after moving to a new track on Bridge Road a few years ago. While there are no official celebrations planned for the club, Ms Orr said the whole club was proud to have had an impact on the lives of young athletes. “It’s pretty impressive to be around for that long,” Ms Orr said. “We’re pretty proud of ourselves. We’ve got so many people who love this centre and have given up so much to make it run well, and we’d do it all again.” Ewen McRae Aimee Orr, front, with Isabel, Ella and Blake. It has been 50 years since the Melton City Little Athletics Club first shot out of the starting blocks. Originally known as the Melton South Little Athletics Club, the club was founded by Barry Taylor in 1969, just six years after little athletics began in Victoria. Mr Taylor passed away in 2017 after 48 years on the club committee, and current club secretary Aimee Orr said his legacy runs through every part of the club. “We’ve always had good people at this club,” she said. “The majority of this current committee has been around for a number of years, we were on it when Barry was there, and you couldn’t have worked under that man without learning everything about running a club and making sure the kids enjoy their athletics. “What he taught us was amazing, so we’re happy to continue his legacy.”

Two bright and bold exhibitions have filled CS Gallery and Melton Library with a vibrant display of colour. Come along this month for a show of fun works for children, or an insight into the journey to marriage equality. LET’S EAT CAKE Follow artist Maylei Hunt’s colourful, historical and personal journey to marriage equality in Australia through an exhibition of street photography. Hunt’s images capture the vibrant fighting spirit of the LGBTIQA+ community and its allies at marriage equality marches, show key events including the plebiscite announcement in November 2017, and celebrate the first year of marriage equality in Australia.
We also kicked off another exciting infrastructure project in partnership with the State Government – a much-needed upgrade of Stan Payne Reserve, Diggers Rest.
Jarrod Hynes, was named Citizen of the Year; with Chloe Wright named Young Citizen of the Year.
This project will deliver natural and artificial shade to help future-proof this open space from climbing temperatures; new plantings to enhance the natural environment; and improved access to public art, historical elements and interpretative signage, throughout.
Kelly Busuttil received the Gender Equity Leader award; Emily Attard, our Access and Inclusion Leader award, and Yvette Medina, our Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Leader award. These outstanding residents give so much to our community—their time, knowledge and experience—and make our City a great place to call home. I’d also like to congratulate residents Daryl Akers OAM, John Lo Piccolo OAM, and Evelyn Missen OAM, who were awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia, as part of this year’s Australia Day honours.
Upgrades to existing shelter, and further developing pedestrian connections across the whole site, round off this terrific project. A $5.35 million State Government investment announced last week will help Council deliver vital projects to its fast-growing community. Particularly pleasing was the announcement of the extension of Brookside Community Pavilion, which will see the redevelopment of the social space and kitchen, provide a new meeting room, amenities, and upgrade to female-friendly change rooms.
space and improved facilities, and I am looking forward to seeing the upgraded pavilion complete later this year. Transport infrastructure remains high on Council’s advocacy priority list, as we advocate on behalf of our community for improvements to roads. Focus now is on having the Palmers Road Corridor (including Westwood Drive), declared a State road due to its strategic importance.
The $850,000 Growing Suburbs Funding grant will be complemented by a $450,000 Council contribution, to complete this important project and meet the needs of local sporting clubs and schools.
Westwood Drive is a critical transport link that’s straining under the congestion of our high growth region, and needs immediate attention to help people and freight move safely and efficiently across our City. To find out more about Council’s advocacy priorities, visit melton.vic.gov.au/advocacy

The Healesville Amateur Racing Club is set to rock later this month as it plays host to a charity concert striving to help fire and drought-affected farmers. The concert will raise money for Need for Feed Disaster Relief – a Lions Club project supplying hay and fodder to farmers in Victoria and NSW since 2006. The concert will feature eight hours of continuous music across two stages. Acts already confirmed include Joe Camilleri and The Black Sorrows, John Schumann (Redgum), The Badloves, Peter Denahy, Shane Howard (Goanna), Damian Howard and the Ploughboys, Oz Rock Express, and Screaming Eagles. Healesville Amateur Racing Club secretary Chris Young said there are still several acts to be confirmed and urged any musicians who are interested in performing to contact the club. Mr Young said the club was also seeking sponsors for the event. The Need for Feed Disaster Relief Charity Concert is on Saturday, February 29, 3-11pm. Tickets cost $44 for adults, $15 for 16 and 17-year-old with ticketed adult, and free for under 16s when accompanied by an adult. Concession tickets will be available at the gate for $30. All profits from tickets and bar sales will go to Need for Feed. Details: https://bit.ly/38KLR1A To become a sponsor, or perform, contact Mr Young on 0417 380 298 or secretary@healesvilleracingclub.com.au

Tyre Power Melton looks after customers, and has the title to prove it. (Luke Hemer)
Tyre Power excellence Tyre Power Melton, winner of the prestigious Canstar Blue Most Satisfied Customers title in the Tyre Retailer category for four consecutive years, doesn’t stand still. The go-ahead business, offering renowned all-level excellence, has now expanded its premises and added some amazing new technology. Owner/manager Adam Nagy explains. “We now have an alternative to wheel balancing - the latest tech Hunter Road Force Touch Balance,“ he says.
Please donate now salvationarmy.org.au
“This technology is used around the world in assembly plants and it doesn’t just balance the wheels. It applies pressure to simulate the vehicle’s weight to determine any imperfection in wheel and tyre, which eliminates any error in the tyre fitting process. “In addition to that, we also have a new state-of-the-art wheel alignment machine. Cars get only the best here!“
These clever additions align with Adam’s determination to provide the best possible customer service, as well as ’fly the flag’ as a respected tyre retailer, with a personalised approach that customers can trust. The store of more than 40 years’ standing offers products and services to meet the needs of most motorists – from mobility scooter riders through to 4WD, car and small truck drivers, and is now also a Nitto dealer. The product range includes quality labels such as Toyo, Nitto, Bridgestone, Maxxis, Cooper, Mickey Thompson, Century, Goodyear and Dunlop. Wheel alignments, servicing, suspension and brake checks, steering repairs and battery maintenance are all carried out by expert staff members. Tyrepower Melton, 146-148 High Street, Melton. Opens 8am-5pm Monday-Friday and 8am-noon Saturday. Inquiries: 9743 5592

SPORT Season over as Bacchus Marsh falls in semi final Bacchus Marsh Lions’ season came to an end at the hands of the Bendigo Braves in the opening round of the Country Basketball League men’s north-west finals. The Lions went in as underdogs in the semi final as they hit the road to take on the Braves and took it up to their opponent for three quarters. The Braves found another level in the last quarter to run away with the win in the last quarter, winning 95-79. Lions co-coach Jeff Feben said they had taken some confidence into the match despite having to travel. “We were coming off an ordinary game the week before,” he said. “That wasn’t a bad sign for us as we seem to play well coming off a poor game, as it has been a reality check. “We gave ourselves a chance. Not the strongest chance, but a chance.” Feben, who missed the game due to attending
a wedding, said by all reports they were just beaten by a better team. Scores were level at half time, with the Lions not able to keep the same momentum going. “Overall they were a slightly better team,” he said. “They are a quality team and they played some good defence despite our guys playing well. “We couldn’t hold on.” The Lions leaders led the way, with Billy Feben and Jordan Kirk scoring 23 and 21 points respectively, despite close attention. Jeff Feben said the Braves were able to limit the impact of both of them late in the game. The loss brings to an end the Lions’ second season in the CBL. Last season they made the grand final in a different conference. Feben said it was disappointing not to at least make the grand final, but they were still proud of the group.
“We played well overall for the season and we’re proud of the way they have represented Bacchus Marsh the last couple of seasons. “There’s been some strong development from the first game to the last game. “At times at the start of the season, teams would blow us out when we put our bench on. At the end of the season, the bench was beating some teams.” Feben said there were good signs for the association with some of the younger players coming through. He highlighted the work of Josh Borninkhof, Colby Pigott, Max Beaumont and development player Cooper McIntosh. “Hopefully these guys can continue to do that at a higher level of basketball and it will hold them in good stead.” Bendigo will face the Maryborough Blazers in the grand final. King of Swing just gets home. (Picture Stuart McCormick)
Tornado Valley’s crown By Michael Howard It wasn’t very summery but there was no shortage of glory at a rain-soaked Tabcorp Park Melton on Saturday night, where two talented leaders emerged victorious in Victoria’s richest pacing and trotting crowns. The final night of the Summer Of Glory saw brilliant trotter Tornado Valley claim the one prize that had been missing from his cabinet with an all-the-way win in the What The Hill Great Southern Star for Long Forrest stable Andy and Kate Gath, narrowly edging out Bolinda-trained mare Red Hot Tooth. And then in the $500,000 Del-Re National A. G. Hunter Cup it was King Of Swing, who didn’t even have a start in Victoria’s greatest race until Saturday morning, who made the most of a drama-filled lead-in to salute for a big band of owners. Among that lot was previous trainer and part-owner Gary Hall Snr, present trainer
Craig Cross and reinsman Gary Hall Jnr, who leapt from his West Australian bed Saturday morning when he received the sweetest call of all. “Pretty surreal feeling,” Hall Jnr said post-win. “I went to bed last night without a drive in the race basically, didn’t look like he was going to get a run, (then got) the phone call 5.30 in the morning saying you better get here. It’s a rush trip but I was really happy to get the call.” As the day wore on the situation only got better for King Of Swing and connections. First off San Carlo’s scratching gave him a place in the race, then both gate one (stablemate Alta Orlando) and then gate two (Mach Shard) horses scratched, handing the one-time emergency the pole draw. King Of Swing made the most of it, comfortably holding the lead and controlling proceedings throughout. “I must say half-way down the straight I thought we were going to
run a nice second, but … they seem to be able to get to his girth but it’s the next half a length that they have trouble with,” Hall Jnr said. “This horse, it’s no secret he’s always had great ability. To win the Breeders (Crown) here and now come back and win a Hunter Cup, I’m pretty proud of the horse because I always knew he had that ability.” Earlier, Andy and Kate Gath claimed the What The Hill Great Southern Star courtesy of Tornado Valley, a victory in the $250,000 Group 1 that was more than 12 months in the making. Tornado Valley had to be scratched from the 2019 edition when a commanding favourite and then had a rocky road into the 2020 edition, having erred in the lead-up in his last start and been forced to trial twice to be back in the draw. Trainer Barry Purdon’s Belle Of Montana took the remaining Group 1 feature, the Pridmore’s Electric Ladyship Cup, leading and winning narrowly to justify her trans-Tasman trip.
Western United had to withstand the heat on two fronts to return home with a share of the points from a nil-all draw with Newcastle Jets in the A-League at McDonald Jones Stadium on Saturday evening. United’s defence was on the end of a barrage of attack from the Jets, but they somehow kept a clean sheet, through sheer luck and a stellar performance from goalkeeper Filip Kurto. The inexperienced United also had to contend with stifling hot and humid weather, but managed to stay focused and yield an important point on a tough away trip. After conceding four goals with Swiss cheese-like defence against Adelaide United six days earlier, coach Mark Rudan said the first priority for Western United was to shore up its defence. “We needed to rectify what happened last week, copping four goals, albeit a different opposition,” Rudan said. “That was a starting base for the week was understanding our roles and responsibilities without the ball. “In that regard, I thought we were much better.” Chances on the attacking end were few and far between for Western United. The best opportunity fell to a tiring Max Burgess with 10 minutes to go, but he put his shot wide. Western United has promoted a lot of youth in the new year, partly to do with exits during the January transfer window and injuries to key players. With a lot of youngsters in the starting line up, Rudan was pleased to see how his side reacted when it was put under intense pressure from Newcastle, who had a whopping 26 shots on goal. Inexperienced players Oskar Dillon, Tomi Uskok and Josh Cavallo stepped up. “It’s not ideal you can’t work with the same players all the time, but it gives an opportunity to somebody else and hope to somebody else,” Rudan said. “They all put their hand up and put their best foot forward.” United has a bye this weekend, before a clash with Brisbane Roar on February 16 at Mars Stadium in Ballarat. Riddell looks to get more umpires on board Riddell Umpires are looking at different ways to try and attract and keep umpires ahead of the upcoming Riddell District Football League season. Like many umpire associations, the Riddell Umpires has had its struggles with umpire numbers, while the need for umpires increases. With a new president and a couple of new committee members, the association is doing what they can to address the issue. New president Addam Icely has been umpiring since 2004 after a long playing career. He said he wasn’t keen on just sitting back and having an opinion, so he decided to step up and take on the president’s role. “I spoke to a few people about maybe stepping up and they thought it was a good idea,” he said. “There was the opportunity there with David [Hill] standing down. “I’ve been umpiring as long as I played football now.” Icely said that they were looking at all the usual ideas to get umpires on board, as well as some from left field. He said he knows that there are plenty of

challenges ahead, but ready to take them on. The association provides umpires for senior and junior matches in the Riddell District Football League, along with club 18 games and AFL Goldfields women’s and girls matches that fall in the playing region. “We have a big turnover of numbers, but we’re not the only association,” he said. “We’re no different to a football club and we say that we are the third club on match day.

Two of the association’s big focuses this season are providing more support of junior umpires and trying to get those playing football and netball to consider umpiring as well. The association has added several junior match day mentors, who will attend junior games. Icely said one of the biggest issues was retaining umpires, with many doing one year and not coming back. “We identified one element, that there wasn’t
Rain ends Storm’s hopes Tara Murray Rain ruined Sydenham-Hillside’s chances of putting a further hold on a top two spot in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association division 3 Roy Picone Shield competition. The Storm was in control of their match against another top four side, Williamstown Imperials, when rain fell and halted play on Saturday. The sides wouldn’t get the opportunity to return to the field with the rain continuing to fall, leaving the match finishing in a draw. Storm president Warren Hackney said it was a shame they didn’t get a result. The Storm was 0-30 after 12 overs in reply to the Imperials’ 147. The Storm started day two at 0-7. “We did a lot of hard work the week before to put ourselves in a good position,” he said. “We were happy to be chasing down the 140 needed and it would have gone a long way to securing a top two spot.” Akeem Springer finished 19 not out for the Storm. Hackney said their top order had fired in recent weeks which had been key for them in putting wins on the board. He said Springer, who made his debut in round seven, had been a big factor in the side getting such good starts. There was just one result across the division, with East Keilor beating Pascoe Vale Hadfield. The Storm remains in second spot having already sealed a finals berth. Hackney said that finishing in the top four was their first aim for the season, having come up from division 4, after winning that premiership last season. “We’re in a very good spot,” he said. “We had a couple of losses early when we were finding our feet, but that was the same last season. “We’re assured our first goal in getting a finals spot. We want to finish as high up the ladder as we can. “We’re chasing a top two spot and a home final. We’re building really nicely.” The Storm face top four sides West Newport and Point Cook in the final two regular season games. Hackney said it would be a good test for them heading into finals. The rain also resulted in Storm’s women’s game being called off on Sunday. The decision was made early Sunday morning. Hackney, who coaches the side, said it had been a really good season despite what the results say. The Storm has won just one game for the season. 18 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY Tuesday, 4 February, 2020

“In comparison to the first two seasons, it’s very different,” he said. “We’ve been doing relatively well with a rebuild taking place. We’ve got a good group forming and we’ve taken a big step in the right direction.” It was washouts for most teams in the VTCA on Sunday, with only a couple of
results across the board. In division 4, Caroline Springs didn’t get any play in against Wyndhamvale, while for a second straight week Melton Centrals and Footscray United didn’t play. In division 5, Melton South Royals had a draw with Footscray ANA.
a lot of support on game day for first and second year umpires,” Icely said. “We now have a head coach, an assistant coach and match day mentors. “They’ll go to the games and provide feedback and shadow them if they need.” The other big initiative for the association is the introduction of a player to umpire pathway program. While they have had umpires come across from football and netball in the past, they are making it an even bigger focus. They are encouraging players to either play on the Saturday or Sunday and then umpire on a different day or later time slot. Icely said it was a good way to make money and that there is a pathway to a higher level if umpires wanted to continue through the ranks. The association starts pre-season training on February 5 at Diggers Rest Recreation Reserve, before moving back to MacPherson Park before the season starts. Titans looking at a top two finish for finals North Western Titans played through the rain to secure a key win in the Baseball Victoria women’s division 3 west competition on the weekend. With rain pouring throughout most of the afternoon, it was anything but easy for the Titans and their opponent, Geelong Baycats Blue. Titans’ president Danny Haymes, who umpired the game, said had they had an official umpire the game may not have gone ahead. “There were a couple of times I was close to calling it,” he said. “It rained for 90 per cent of the game. “It was really trying conditions.” “We wanted to play and it had taken some of the Geelong players more than an hour to get there. “You want them to play when they can.” In their first game back in the new year, the Titans came away with a 15-6 win. Haymes said they got off to a slow start with Geelong scoring most of their runs in the first innings. Once the Titans got going they put in a strong performance. “We got off to a slow start, Geelong was just hitting the ball well,” he said. “It wasn’t us making errors. “Some of those players have played a couple of games. We got into our groove and we were fine and were quite dominant after that.” Haymes said it was a clinical team performance from the side. He said the difference in the game was that while Geelong relied on three or four players, the Titans had contributors throughout the whole team. Kim Borg in her return from injury, hit the ball well for the Titans. Kate Rigby pitched the whole game and was another standout. The win moves the Titans to second spot with three rounds before finals. Haymes said they had a hard run home, with matches against two other top four sides the next couple of weeks. On Sunday, the Titans men’s side had a tough day against Springvale Lions. Fielding one of their strongest sides, the Titans lost 11-0. Tara Murray

RAM truck conversion success By Ewan Kennedy, Marque Motoring The 5000th RAM truck has rolled off the production line in Melbourne. The Granite Crystal grey 1500 V8 Hemi Laramie is one of the team that has the brilliant catchline of “Eat utes for breakfast”. The very American RAM range is very varied; light duty (1500) and heavy duty (3500 and 2500). They can tow anything from 3.5 tonnes up to 6.9 tonnes. “This is truly an Australian automotive success story,” says Neville Crichton CNZM, Executive Chairman of the Ateco Group and originator of the idea to convert left-hand drive RAM Trucks to right-hand drive at the bespoke Melbourne Manufacturing Facility (MMF). “This year will see RAM sales just shy of 3,000 units in Australia and New Zealand – last year we sold 767 and just 449 in 2017. Most pleasing of all, however, is the boost to the local automotive manufacturing sector, employing over 250 people directly, and many more indirectly via our local supplier agreements.” The RAM Trucks Australia story began in 2013, when the Ateco Group became New Zealand distributor for FCA, which included the RAM Trucks brand. Crichton realised there was an opportunity to demonstrate Australia could manufacture and produce a world-class product despite the closure of other local manufacturing facilities. RAM Trucks decided they were ready to enter the market with the Ateco Group and a worldwide search for an effective remanufacturing partner began. The Walkinshaw Group – with whom Crichton has a long-standing relationship, having raced for Tom Walkinshaw back in the 1980s – were the most competitive and were awarded the contract in 2015.

Rams (which incidentally haven’t been called Dodges since 2009) are imported to Oz ready to drive – but with the steering etc on the left. They are trucked to the purpose-built facility in Melbourne, where the body is pulled off the chassis and a total RHD conversion is carried out. The Ateco Group has invested over $100m in tools, equipment, inventory, and stock to enable product development, quality and conformity with the overseas requirements of RAM Trucks
International, as well as the ADR regulations. RAM Trucks Australia is the world’s only factory-authorised RHD manufacturer of RAM Trucks and, from June 2019, Australia’s only 24-hour vehicle manufacturing facility. The company is a major source of employment in automotive engineering, design and production excellence for both RAM Trucks Australia and New Zealand, and the Australian component companies that keep the factory supplied with Australian
made parts. “The investment is significant and ongoing,” says David Smitherman, RAM Trucks Australia Special Advisor. “We have a fantastically engaged dealer network in both Australia and New Zealand, and we have exciting plans for 2020 and beyond to continue building the brand, product portfolio and network.” Every RAM is backed by a three year/100,000km warranty with roadside assistance, and requires a service every 12 months or 12,000km
