Going mutts for Cookie One of Melton’s cutest and furriest companions is stepping into the spotlight to riase money for a Melbourne animal hospital. Melton pooch Cookie will be the feature pet for September 2020, in the annual ‘Backyard heroes’ calendar for Lort Smith Animal Hospital. Cookie is joined by 11 other pets of all shapes and sizes posing for the calendar to raise funds for the hospital. Cookie was a Lort Smith pet therapy volunteer at the hospital for many years until his recent retirement. As part of his role, Cookie and his carer regularly visited an aged care facility bringing joy, comfort and companionship to the residents. Treasuring the memories of their shared pet therapy journey, his carer Linda Willis said volunteering with Cookie was one of the most special parts of her life. The 2020 calendar celebrates the array of animals that vets treat every week at Australia’s largest not-for-profit animal hospital including mice, cats, dogs, reptiles and even wombats. All profits raised from the sale of the calendar go direct to Lort Smith. Calendars can be purchased for $15 from lortsmith.com/shop Cookie with Linda Willis. Hospital push intensifies Doctors and radiographers in the west have warned patients’ lives are at risk unless a 24-hour hospital is built in Melton by 2022. Thirty-three GPs, cardiologists and radiographers have signed a letter imploring both state and federal governments to commit to fully funding a major public hospital in Melbourne’s fastest growing area. “Due to inadequate access to hospitals, prolonged transfer times and extended waits in emergency departments, avoidable deaths of patients are now becoming a regular occurrence

in the district of Melton,” the letter reads. While the state government has set aside $2.4 million for a business case for the first stage of a new hospital, it has stopped short of fully funding the hospital and is yet to provide a firm start date for construction. Melton’s population has exceeded that of Ballarat and is expected to swell exponentially from about 164,000 to 200,000 over the next five years. By 2031, the population is projected to surpass 250,000. Rose Lakis has iliac artery disease – a condition where the main arteries to her legs are blocked – putting her at risk of potentially fatal blood clots.

The 64-year-old from Kurunjang cannot walk more than 20 metres at a time without her legs swelling up. She is waiting to have bypass surgery at the end of the year. For now, Ms Lakis lives in daily fear she won’t make it to the hospital if she has a blood clot or stroke. “If I was lucky enough to get an ambulance in time it would really depend on the time of day I needed it because it could be 40 to 50 minutes before I even make it to hospital,” she said. Melton GP Marcus Watson said the situation was complicated by lack of main roads or public transport linking Melton to major hospitals in Sunshine, Footscray or Ballarat.

“At peak hour, the Western Highway is a carpark not a freeway,“ Dr Watson said. “It makes it very, very difficult to get anywhere.” Melton mayor Lara Carli said the hospital was crucial for Melton’s future, and the council is pushing for construction to begin as soon as possible. “The need for a public hospital is absolutely critical,” Cr Carli said. “Not only are existing health services under pressure, but travel times to get to surrounding hospitals are getting longer and longer.” Victorian Health Minister Jenny Mikakos said the government remained committed to building the hospital. 12433592-SN49-19

Battery bonanza for Bacchus By Ewen McRae Bacchus Marsh could soon be at the forefront of a growing technology trend, following the opening of a high-tech facility last week. Technology company Calix Limited opened its new $2.7 million BATMn reactor last week, which will be used to research and create advanced battery materials for new technology, such as electric cars. The reactor was partly funded by the Australian government, and will work in partnership with similar facilities around Australia, and the world, to develop more efficient battery materials. Calix chief executive Phil Hodgson said

it was an exciting time to be involved in the technology field. “The rapid growth in electric vehicles and renewable energy is creating a global need for more efficient, cheaper, higher-capacity and more sustainable energy storage options,” Mr Hodgson said. “While a large part of this growth has been enabled through the performance of lithium-ion batteries, the issues around the cost, capacity, safety and sustainability of current lithium-ion batteries will increasingly limit this growth. “There is a need for advanced materials for lithium-ion batteries that deliver superior performance and safety at lower cost while at

the same time reducing environmental impact. “With BATMn, and our expanded network of research institutes and major industrial players, this is exactly what Calix is trying to achieve.” The facility will also be tapping into local talent, hosting two PhD students and a post-doctorate researcher through Calix’s involvement in an Australian Research Council-funded training centre based at Deakin University. “BATMn is a cutting-edge, industry-led centre that positions these students at the forefront of technology,” Mr Hodgson said. “We believe that they will gain valuable industry experience.”

New jobs are just the ticket

After years of waiting, the Bacchus Marsh BMX club finally has a new home, and its riders are wasting no time getting settled. The new track at the Racecourse Recreation Reserve was officially unveiled last week, giving the club its own base for the first time and opening up the possibility of major events hitting the town. Club president Les Stuart said the club had been dispersed for years, and having a world-class track in their backyard would do wonders for the club.

The opening of a manufacturing business in Truganina is expected to create 100 new jobs. Ticket, tag and label manufacturer TMA Group will relocate its main ticket operations from New South Wales to Truganina. The new production, design and logistics centre at Truganina is expected to create 100 jobs by 2022. TMA produces stock for companies including Ticketmaster, Ticketek, Qantas, Westfield, Coles and Australia Post and specialises in state-of-the-art security features such as holographic foils, trust seals and invisible fluorescent inks. The company also creates ticket apps, software and machinery for a range of industries across Australia, New Zealand and the Asia-Pacific. Minister for Jobs, Innovation and Trade Martin Pakula said: “TMA is an Australian success story and now with the establishment of its new operations in Victoria, the company can be expected to continue to grow and provide more jobs for local people.” Setting up in Victoria has allowed TMA to take on new customers including a major contract with Woolworths and to expand its product range, notably with the ZipBy technology platform – an app that allows customers to use secure car parks without printed tickets. Tarneit MP Sarah Connolly said: “This is a significant win for Melbourne’s west – a forward-thinking company seeing the opportunities this region can offer.”

‘‘

This means we can now hold large events, on a state - Les Stuart and national level

’’

“It’s been a long wait, and we’re all very excited about it,” Mr Stuart said. “It’s been in the works since 2010, and our 100 members previously just trained in nearby suburbs or out of town, so it’s great to bring everyone together. “The Moorabool shire has been excellent in helping us get this facility, I can’t speak highly enough of their commitment, and they’ve done a great job in creating something of such a high standard.” With a course designed for riders of all ages and skill levels, Mr Stuart said plans were now underway to bring some major events to the track in the near future. “This means we can now hold large events, on a state and national level, which is very exciting,” he said. “It’s one of the better tracks in Victoria, so we’ve been in discussions with the state body about having some large events. “That will definitely be happening in the future, hopefully not too far down the track.”

The school organised a ‘Colour Run’ to raise money for its 2020 school musical. More than 280 pupils were covered head to toe in dry paint and sprayed with water from the local CFA to create a vibrant scene. Education support teacher Fiona Cortese said the colour run has helped raise $10,000 for the production. “We’ve done a colour run before, but it’s so much bigger this year,” Ms Cortese said. “The kids are pretty pumped, it’s an exciting day for them.” The school production of The Wizard of Oz

will take place in September next year, and the growing school is hoping to get as much of the school involved as possible. “It’s a great musical to get the whole school involved,” Ms Cortese said. “Each grade will perform a song in the musical, and because our numbers have grown we need a bigger venue which means more fundraising. “We’ll have rehearsals early next year, but we’ve started getting the ball rolling and seeing which kids want to put their hand up to audition for a part, but the excitement is already starting to build.”

A Melton man driving more than 40 kilometres over the speed limit is expected to be charged. Police said the man was driving a Holden Commodore detected travelling at 137km/h in a 90km/h zone on the Western Freeway near Rockbank, about 6.40pm on November 19. The car was seen dangerously tailgating and cutting through traffic. Police intercepted then impounded the vehicle. The 27-year-old driver is expected to be charged with driving in a manner dangerous to the public, exceeding the speed limit, following too close and failing to signal when changing lanes.

New station ready to go By Ewen McRae Cobblebank station is ready to receive its first passengers. The brand new stop will officially open its doors next week, coinciding with the start of a new timetable on December 2. The station, which will accommodate 285 services each week, features two undercover platforms, both with lift and ramp accessibility, CCTV, indoor waiting rooms and toilets, car parking for 190 vehicles, a bus bay and a staffed office. The station has also been future-proofed, with land between the entrance and the first platform left vacant to accommodate a third platform in the future. Speaking earlier this month, local MP Steve McGhie said it was exciting to finally be opening the new station. “We’re giving Melton passengers more transport options with new train and bus services to help get them where they need to go and home again, he said. “We promised to deliver Cobblebank station and that’s exactly what we’re doing. I want to thank locals as we get on and finishing delivering this vital project. The newest station to the Ballarat line has been under construction for the past year, and will host an open day on December 1 ahead of its first services the following morning. The day will run from 10am to 2pm, and include activities for the kids as well as a jumping castle, face-painting and roving entertainers. The day will also feature a science and technology display in partnership with Western BACE and Melton South Primary School, where children can experiment with a host of new technologies.

Police go back to school Retired police officers will visit schools across Melbourne as part of a program aimed at reducing youth crime. The Community Advocacy Alliance – comprising retired police, victims of crime and community members – launched the Police Veterans in Schools program on Saturday. The program will initially run in schools in St Albans, Frankston, Box Hill, Camberwell and Wallan. The program will be run by retired police officers. CCA chairman and former police chief commissioner Kel Glare said the program was being introduced against a background of serious and escalating youth crime. “The regular incidence of home invasions, car jacking, swarming and run-through thefts in stores and convenience outlets [is] impacting Victorians physically and mentally across the state, he said. “We are most encouraged by the positive reception we are receiving from schools in both the public and private sectors which are interested in taking veterans on board for this pilot and also from retired police willing to volunteer their time, which can be considerable. According to the CCA, similar program run in New South Wales and Queensland. The alliance claims such programs have contributed to lower incidences of serious youth crimes in both states. Laura Michell

Building social connections By Tate Papworth

Isolation is known to be a risk factor when it comes to suicide and that’s why neighbourhood houses across communities are striving to help build social connections. Melton council’s community learning and activation officer Daniela Kohut has a leading role at the Hillside Neighbourhood House and says they’re a real hub for networking. “So much comes from them. Often people come to join a program – something like yoga and from that they get to know other people in the class, build friendships and support each other,” she said. “It also gives them the confidence to do other things – we offer all sorts of activities here, singing, art, a walking group and more. “We see a lot of people building friendships and it’s great to watch them grow. They pick each other up, and there’s real sense of community.” Neighbourhood houses offer a range of activities for all ages, but Ms Kohut says not everyone has to join a class. “It’s also about providing a point of contact. People who feel isolated can come to the house. “We find people that come build relationships with the staff. That can lead to a conversation about how they’re feeling. “Being with other people also reduces social isolation and improves mood.” Education and information around mental health issues is also readily available. “A big part of our role is to raise awareness around issues … people might not be coming in to take part in activity, we’re an information hub as well. “It’s a really important aspect of the work – we want people to feel confident that this is a safe place to start a conversation, to feel

Home of summer fun Eynesbury Homestead may be closed for renovations, but there’s still plenty happening over the summer months. The homestead, which is operated by the Resimax Group, recently started opening the grounds on Friday, Saturday and Sunday afternoons, with food trucks, pop up bars, local artists and DJs and kids entertainment on offer. Resimax chief executive Steve Hooker said it was exciting to be doing something new at the Homestead. “We wanted to make the most of the summer, and provide some awesome experiences and events for our residents in the area,” he said. “We’re putting on what we’re calling ‘The Big Weekend’. We had a few hundred people attend the first couple … which is really pleasing.

“The aim is to make it a family-friendly place where people can come down, grab a bite to eat and a drink on the grounds and just relax over summer.” The events are weather dependent, but are planned weekly over the summer months. Mr Hooker said they would try a number of different things over the summer to keep things fresh. “We’ll change things up a bit, give people different food offerings and entertainment options,” he said. The Big Weekend will run every Friday and Saturday from noon-9pm and Sundays from 11am-5pm. Ewen McRae 12431251-CG49-19

Tributes flow for Melton Bloods life member Tributes are flowing for well known former police inspector Bill Weatherly, who died suddenly this month. Mr Weatherly, 65, is remembered by many for his “larger-than-life” personality and his dedication to the western suburbs. As a long-serving Wyndham inspector, Mr Weatherly implemented family violence units and introduced Justice of the Peace rosters at police stations. He was an Australian Police Medal recipient and founder of the annual police verses Indigenous football match. He sat on recruit selection panels and in 2002 created two administrative positions at Footscray police station where young recruits could work on a 12-month contract to gain on-the-job experience. Police Association Victoria secretary Wayne Gatt offered condolences to Mr Weatherly’s family. “Bill was a respected police veteran who was well known for his contribution to policing in the western suburbs,” Mr Gatt told Star Weekly. “His legacy in life and in the job will live on through his family.” Lalor MP Joanne Ryan said the community was “in mourning” after learning the news. “To his family, his three beautiful children and former VicPol colleagues, my thoughts are with you at this time.” Outside of his police duties, Mr Weatherly was also a coach for the North Footscray football club as well as a life-member and premiership player for the Melton Bloods football club. Jason McCluskey, of North Footscray Football Netball Club, informed the Red Devils community of the sad news last week. “Bill was a past coach and friend to many of the extended Devils community.”

Inspector Bill Weatherly. (Joe Mastroianni) 77157_02

James Hohepa-Smith, of the Victorian Moari Wardens, also paid tribute to Mr Weatherly. “We all in the community mourn the loss of a great man who held the community groups and organisations in high regard especially to our Victoria Maori Wardens in Wyndham,” Mr Hohepa-Smith said. “Thank you for your service and much Aroha [love] to your family and friends as we remember the great work he has made.” Esther Lauaki

Quality, space and style combine to give this family house the wow factor. Enter to a wide hall and high ceilings, which give a peek of what’s to come. There’s a multitude of entertainment and relaxation areas with separate living and dining room at the front of the house, an open plan family/meals area with central kitchen, and a rumpus room with access to a fully enclosed pergola with Coonara heater and pool table. The all-white kitchen has a long island bench with integrated sink, quality appliances, including a freestanding oven and cooktop, and a walk-in pantry. All bedrooms have built-in robes, the main bedroom, at one end of the house, has a walk-in robe and en suite. The large block, about 6070 square metres, has landscaped gardens, a fully fenced in-ground pool surrounded by exposed aggregate concrete and large shed. The property is leased until June 2020.

This well-loved family house is a rare gem – with five bedrooms and three living spaces on about 752 square metres – you’ll be spoilt for space. First impressions are lasting with a manicured front garden and rendered exterior contrasting with Colorbond roofing. Inside, high ceilings, freshly painted walls and new quality carpets add to the appeal. The house is zoned for sleeping and living – bedrooms and a large renovated family bathroom are ranged along the left. The main bedroom includes a modern en suite and walk-in robe. The rest of the house is all about family gatherings with a lounge room, open plan living and meals area and a separate rumpus. At the heart of it is a timber kitchen with ample cupboard and bench space including an island bench. Need more space? There’s a decked pergola off both the living area and rumpus room. The low maintenance backyard includes a garden shed and there’s a detached oversized double garage, also with decking.

United’s VAR anger By Lance Jenkinson

A-League

Western United is frustrated, but not panicked, after falling to consecutive A-League losses for the first time. United coach Mark Rudan pointed to his side’s dominance in general play in one-goal defeats to Newcastle Jets and Central Coast Mariners over the past two rounds as a source for optimism. “Those two narrow losses, if you look at both games in isolation, I think the first 30 minutes against Newcastle, we weren’t at our best, we rectified that and absolutely annihilated them in the second half and did everything but score,” he said. “Exactly the same in this one [against Central Coast], apart from a deflection [on the Mariners goal], they hadn’t had a shot [on target] I don’t think. “Everybody saw the kind of team that we are, sometimes they go for you, sometimes it doesn’t go for you, but I’m extremely proud of the players, their effort, the way they kept fighting to get themselves back into the game. “The attitude is first class, the character of the team is brilliant.” Western United’s finishing was the issue in its 1-0 loss to Central Coast Mariners in Gosford on Sunday evening. United had the ball camped in their attacking third for most of the game, but could not unlock the Mariners defence. The most clear-cut chance of the game fell to Panagiotis Kone in the first half, but he put a perfectly weighted ball from Alessandro Diamanti over the crossbar from close range. The chances continued to come for United with Besart Berisha tipping a shot over the crossbar and then powering a header straight

into the arms of Central Coast goalkeeper Mark Birighitti. Diamanti had a number of half-chances that he might have buried on another day. While United would have liked their time over again with a number of their missed chances, Rudan paid credit to the discipline of

the Mariners, who were desperate to win their first game at home this season. “They fought hard, they battled hard and they kept their zero,” he said. “I need to give them due respect as well because they fought extremely hard to get that win.” Rudan was ropable about two VAR decisions

that went against Western United late in the second half. The first contentious decision came when United substitute Dylan Pierias whipped in a cross which hit the trailing arm of Mariners defender Ziggy Gordon. Gordon’s arm appeared to be struck in an unnatural position, but the video assistant ruled play on. The next vociferous call for VAR intervention from the Western United coaches came when United winger Connor Pain fired a shot on target, which hit the out-stretched arm of Mariners goalscorer Giancarlo Gallifuoco. Rudan voiced his displeasure at both calls that went against his side and called on the A-League to explain how they came to the decisions. “I’m not going to swear like my colleague [Western Sydney coach Markus Babbel] on Friday night did, but I’m right behind him and I’m right behind all the other coaches that have been on the wrong side [of VAR],” Rudan said. “I’d love a please explain. “If you want to look at us as a football club, not one VAR decision has gone our way this year.” Diamanti was the pick of the Western United players, serving up some delicious passes in the first half. Dario Jertec worked hard both ways, kick-starting United’s attack from defensive midfield and ensuring little got through him. Josh Risdon was full of energy on the right side, while Kwabena Appiah-Kubi was lively on the front line. Fifth-placed Western United will confront its toughest test yet when reigning champions Sydney FC visit GHMBA Stadium in Geelong on Sunday at 4pm.

SPORT Lions win two in a row to get season back on track Bacchus Marsh Lions got their season back on track with two wins in the Country Basketball League north-west competition at the weekend. Coming off their best performance of the season, the Tigers were again in fine form on Saturday night against Maryborough Blazers and then backed it up on Sunday against the Kyneton Tigers. Now with three wins in a row, Lions coach Jeff Feben said the work they had been doing was starting to show through. “It’s put our season back on track,” he said. “The last three games we’ve played teams that are above us and they struggled to score. The first time they scored against us comfortably. “We’ve come back better after the bye and we’re sharing the ball better. The energy and effort is up and we’ve turned a corner defensively.” On Saturday night, the Lions beat Maryborough, 64-53. The Lions led at every break and were 16

points up at three-quarter time. The Blazers responded in the last quarter, but the Lions held strong. Billy Feben and Max Beaumont top scored for the Lions with 16 points each. Jeff Feben said running with three centres in the squad for that match had worked in their favour as they did a lot of hard work. He said there was some really good energy from the group. On Sunday, the Lions backed it up against Kyneton with a 24-point win. The Lions beat the Tigers, 73-49. Max Beaumont top scored with 17 points, while Jordan Kirk had his best game of the season, scoring 16 points before fouling out. The Lions got the win despite leading scorer Billy Feben scoring just seven points. Feben said Jordan Kirk and Matt Parker both capped off good weekends and were important in the win. Taking only two bigs into the game, Pat

Craig provided really good support for Sam Byron. The win moves the Lions into the top four for the first time this season, with four wins and three losses. It will be another challenge for the Lions this week as they travel to Echuca to face the Echuca Pirates for the first time this season. The Lions will be hoping to get their first win on the road. “We have to turn our fortunes around when we go on the road as all our wins are at home. “It will be a tough one for us. If we can bring how we are going at the moment on the road, we should be in with a good chance.” Tara Murray

Melton on the improve By Tara Murray An improved performance wasn’t enough for Melton as it went down to Taylors Lakes in the final over in their Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association east-west clash. With just one win this season, Melton was hoping to get back on track and while it put in a better performance with the bat it wasn’t enough. Taylors Lakes got the job done on the final ball of the innings. Melton director of coaching Anthony Gale said there was definitely some better signs. “We were close but no cigar,” he said. “Our batting was much improved with a lot more starts. The bottom half did a lot of the scoring. “In one-day cricket you can look at a couple of little things, it’s a fine line.” Melton won the toss and elected to bat on a good batting deck. It started well and was cruising at 2-90. The Lions then lost frequent wickets and were eventually restricted to 8-202.

Gale said there was some good signs in the innings. “Ben MacRae and Nathan Taylor both got starts, which was good,” he said. “But they couldn’t go on. “We needed one of those two to go on. You get one of those guys to at least 70, it makes a difference. “No one in the top four were there throughout most of the innings. You get 240 to 250, you are likely to win most games. “The bottom half did a lot of the scoring. I don’t think it was a polished innings.” Skipper Brad Jones top scored with 46, while Dilshan Kanchana finished 41 not out. Gale said in an ideal world, Jones would be making those runs to push the total beyond 250, not trying to get the side out of trouble. Melton kept the pressure on Taylors Lakes throughout and it wasn’t until a late partnership they got across the line. “They got it eight down and the last two batters did a good job,” Gale said. “They needed 22 off 24 balls and then got it

down to five runs off the last over. “We got a run out and they needed two runs off two balls.” The loss leaves Melton with just one win after five rounds. Gale knows that their season is hanging by a thread with the side sitting in 12th position. The competition is close though, as they sit just one game outside the top six. Gale said if they can continue the good signs they showed on Saturday and continue to improve they could turn things around. “If we string three or four games together, you get momentum. [But] We only have one win, so it seems a long way away.” It was a weekend of thrillers for Melton. Its second XI won in the second last over against Taylors Lakes. Jason Hibbert steered them home with a half century. Gale said if Hibbert continued to put runs on the board, he might put pressure on those in the top side. The third XI also lost in the final over.

Melton and Bacchus Marsh were both on the winners’ list in Bowls Victoria Pennant division 2, section 1. Melton had no issues against Altona (3) in a 92 (18)-56 (0) win. Alan Thistlethwaite was the big winner for Melton, with his rink winning 29-12. Bacchus Marsh had a solid win against Maribyrnong Park, winning 90 (15)-75 (3). Justin Webster and Phil Minniti were the winning skips for Bacchus Marsh. Bacchus Marsh maintains its spot in the top two, while Melton has moved up to seventh.

GDCA A century to captain-coach Tristan Francis has Eynesbury on top after day one of its Gisborne and District Cricket Association Jensen Shield match with Diggers Rest Bulla. Francis scored 131 to help guide his side to 265. Opener Scott Oldfield scored 52 at the top of the order. Stephen Morris took six wickets for Diggers Rest Bulla.

Heartache for Falcons after falling short in grand final Caroline Springs’ premiership dreams ended in heartache with a loss to Geelong in the Cricket Victoria Women’s Community Cricket north-west B T20 grand final on Sunday. Chasing their first premiership, the Falcons went into the game slight favourites having claimed the minor premiership and home ground advantage. But in front of a large crowd, the Falcons were left to pay for a below par performance with the bat. While they were able to fight back with the ball, it wasn’t enough. Falcons coach Troy Blackman said in the end it came down to the batting. “We were close in the end, but we didn’t get enough runs on the board. “Even if we got another 10 to 15 runs it might have made a difference. “We were aiming for 110-120.” The Falcons produced their lowest score of the season, bowled out for 78 with two overs remaining. Just three batters reached double figures,

with Jordin Williamson top scoring with 19 runs – her highest score of the season. Blackman said not batting out their overs would prove costly later on. He said while there were some nerves in the group, Geelong’s bowling halted their momentum. “They have a good bowling attack,” he said. “They were bowling full and at the wickets. “They have a young attack with an older lady. She was hard to get away and she was the difference.” Geelong got off to a good start with the bat and looked on track for an easy victory, cruising at 1-39 off seven overs. The Falcons then tightened the screws and were able to make a game of it. “They got the score with nine balls remaining,” Blackman said. “We were able to pull them back at the end. They struggled to score runs at the end, they were a bit nervous.” It was all single wicket takers for the Falcons, with Geelong finishing 4-79. Despite the loss, Blackman said he was proud

of the playing group and their achievements this year, including winning their first minor premiership. He said the crowd at the game was the biggest he had seen at the club for a number of years. “Hats off to the girls,” he said. “I’m really proud of the girls making the grand final in their second year in the competition. “Last year they won two games. “The growth and improvement of them [has been huge], they’re a good bunch of girls.” The Falcons are skipping the one-day competition, meaning their season is over. The younger girls will play with their junior teams for the rest of the summer. The one-day competition starts on December 8. Melton Centrals face Geelong, while St Anthonys has the bye. Storm claim outright win By Tara Murray Sydenham-Hillside timed its run to perfection to claim an outright victory against East Keilor in their Victorian Turf Cricket Association division 3 Roy Picone Shield clash. Having claimed first innings points early on day two, the Storm set themselves up to claim an outright win late in the piece. After bowling East Keilor out for a second time, the Storm needed 11 runs off three overs to get the full points. They needed the whole three overs, getting the job done on the last ball. Storm president and first XI player Warren Hackney said they were able to take their luck when it came their way. “It was very exciting and we’re really pleased to get maximum points,” he said. “It got quite tight in the end. One of their guys had to leave early, leaving us one less wicket to take. “It might have got us over the line.” Chasing East Keilor’s 134, the Storm resumed at 1-80. Hackney said the first task was to get the

runs to claim first innings points as quickly as possible. Then they wanted to add some runs to the board. They made 8-217, with Ameya Naik top scoring with 95. It left the Storm 45 overs to bowl out East Keilor for 82 or less. They bowled well and were able to restrict East Keilor to 93 off 45 overs. It left them three overs to get 11 runs. Playing coach Alston Bobb took 5-42 and Kaluwahandi Prasad bowled well, finishing with 3-18 off nine overs. The Storm lost two wickets in their second innings, but it didn’t matter with the Storm finishing 2-11. The Storm now sits second, having won three of their four completed matches. Having come up a grade in the off season, Hackney said they were happy with how things had gone. “There’s certainly room for improvement. “We’ve taken the step up in our stride. “We’re looking forward to playing against every team and seeing where we really sit.” The Storm will be tested this weekend with

two one-day matches. They face top side Point Cook and then face fourth-placed Sunshine Heights on Sunday. Meanwhile on Sunday, the Storm’s women’s side lost to Keilor. Keilor made 5-151 from its overs, with Tara Brown the pick of the bowlers, taking 3-10 off three overs. The Storm produced one of its best scores for the season, making 4-111. Bethany Rigg made her highest score, 25, while Brown finished 17 not out. In men’s division 4, Melton Centrals remains without a win after losing to Grand United. Grand United made 288 in reply to Centrals’ 205. Caroline Springs lost to St Andrews. Chasing 194, Caroline Springs was bowled out for 183. In division 5, Melton South Royals claimed an outright win against Sanctuary Lakes. Resuming at 3-73 in a chase of 140, the Royals went on to make 5-240. Steven Szabo top scored with 100. Sanctuary Lakes was bowled out for 111. The Royals hit the winning runs in the first over, finishing 0-13.

Bowen medallist Jaidyn Caruana is on the move from Romsey, joining rivals Diggers Rest for next year’s Riddell District Football League season. The Burras announced on Thursday morning that Caruana had made the switch. Burras coach Jamie Lobb said they couldn’t be happier to get Caruana on board. Caruana trained with club for the first time on Wednesday. “He works with our major sponsor Fireline Fire Protection and works with a few of the boys,” Lobb said. “We sort of had that connection there and it translated that he didn’t want to be at Romsey next season. “We were able to work something out. It’s good for us.” Lobb said Caruana would provide them with an x-factor in the middle of the ground. Caruana had a breakout year this year, winning the Bowen Medal by a massive 14 votes. He also won the player of the year award, voted by the coaches. “We know what he did this year,” said Lobb. “He can slot into the midfield and be that missing piece of the puzzle. “We’re not expecting him to do the same thing next year, but it would be nice if he could.” Caruana is the third signing for Burras. Premiership hero Jason Williams and another premiership player Chris Lawton are both returning to the club. Lobb said it was good to get both of them back on board. “Everyone knows them and they fit straight back into the group.” Lobb said they had room for one more recruit, but said they would be very selective if they added someone. Mark Freeth, Tom Evans and Ryan Peters, who didn’t play a lot of senior football this year, have all put in clearances to leave the club. While the Burras only started training this week, most have been working hard in the off season. Lobb said the group was keen to atone for a disappointing end to this year, when they were knocked out in the preliminary final after claiming the minor premiership. Tara Murray
