The money and the mo
(Shawn Smits) 200458_05
Matt Clark admits he might not grow the thickest moustache this month, but he’s making his mark in other ways as one of Australia’s biggest Movember fundraisers. The Bacchus Marsh man last year raised $12,615, putting him in the top 20 fundraisers in the country. This year he’s raised almost $10,000 at the half way point of the month. He said a cause as important as men’s health deserved a lot of support. “I put a fair bit of pressure on myself to get the word out and raise the funds, but it’s a great cause so it’s all worth it,” he said. “I’ve got to know the guys at the Movember Foundation a bit, and seeing how hard they work for this cause really drives me to do whatever I can each year. “Whether it’s prostate or testicular cancer research, or mental health awareness and suicide prevention, it’s all important work that’s being done and all causes close to my heart.” On top of raising the funds, Mr Clark said the best thing was seeing more and more moustaches out and about, and starting a conversation on the importance of good health among men. “It’s always encouraging to see all the Mo’s around town, and knowing that everyone’s doing their bit,” he said. https://mobro.co/mattclark2019?mc=1 Ewen McRae
Platform change uproar By Ewen McRae Changes to Melton station are causing unease among commuters, with city-bound trains set to depart from the opposite platform from next month. As part of upgrades to the Ballarat line, including a new station at Cobblebank and duplication of the line between Melton and Deer Park, the platform numbers are set to switch and city-bound trains will run from the current platform two when the new timetable begins on December 2. A number of commuters have complained that platform two is not equipped to deal with
the morning peak crowds, with less undercover areas, lack of toilets, and a single access point among their main concerns. Train user Luke Raisbeck said the switch made no sense. “It’s quite a short platform on that side, not at all suitable for a peak hour crowd,” Mr Raisbeck said. “There’s been no consultation with passengers, no information on it, just a notice saying that’s what we’re doing, and from mine and a lot of other passengers point of view it’s misguided. “It’s a cattle run between platforms to go through that tunnel, it’s also unsafe for anyone with a wheelchair, and there’s just no facilities
on that side of the station. “They’ve pumped all this money into Cobblebank and Rockbank stations, but not a cent has gone to Melton. It’s like they just want us to go to the other stations.” There is also concern for the kiosk currently operating on platform one, which will now be on the wrong side of the station at the busiest time of the day. An online petition has been set up by customers of the kiosk to get V/Line to reconsider the change, with more than 150 signatories in the first two days. The kiosk owner was unable to comment because of a contract with V/Line.
A V/Line spokesperson said the changes to the platforms were necessary to activate the track duplication between Melton and Deer Park and improve reliability of services. “Platform changes for services at Melton and Rockbank stations are an important part of realising the benefits of the Ballarat Line Upgrade,” the spokesperson said. “We’ll provide additional signage and customer service staff to help passengers while they are adjusting to the platform changes.” The spokesperson said repairs to the asphalt, tactile ground surface indicators and platform coping on platform two would soon be completed.

New mayor for Moorabool By Ewen McRae Councillor David Edwards is the new Moorabool mayor, after winning a two-way battle for the position last week. Cr Edwards won the position by four votes to two over previous deputy mayor John Keogh, and will serve his second mayoral term in the past four years after previously filling the role in 2016-17. He takes over from Cr Paul Tatchell, who has been mayor for the past two years. In a short speech following his ascension, Cr Edwards said he wanted the next 12 months to
be remembered for unity and building a strong platform for the shire. “I’d like to thank my fellow councillors for their support in being able to do this role,” he said. “I think everyone in this room knows that Moorabool faces some unprecedented challenges over the next four, five, six, 10, 15 years, but not just in terms of growth. “We quite often talk about growth in Bacchus Marsh, Parwan and Merrimu, but also our small towns, and how we continue to maintain and grow those small towns and keep them sustainable. “We’ve got issues with roads, we’ve got wind
farms, proposals for all sorts of things that creates stress on a small shire like this, so we need to work together over the next 12 months as we come towards the end of our term, to ensure we look after Moorabool for the long term.” Cr Edwards will be the final mayor for the current council, with general council elections taking place in November 2020. Cr Tatchell proposed that no deputy mayor be appointed for the next 12 months, saying it would give all councillors a chance to represent council at events. The motion was passed, and no deputy mayor was elected.

McGrath mania a hit It’s not every day you have the chance to face the bowling of an Australian cricket legend, but a group of Rockbank residents did just that at the weekend. As part of the launch day for Resi Ventures’ Accolade Rockbank development, fast bowling great Glenn McGrath was on hand to sign autographs, pose for photos, and send down a few balls to those interested in a hit. The holder of more than 900 international wickets may not have come off the long run, but Resi Ventures office and finance manager Terri Baldwin said McGrath was one of the day’s clear highlights. “He is just such a nice guy, and was happy to sign every autograph and have a chat to those that came along,” she said. “About 45 per cent of our estate owners are Indian, who love their cricket, so it was a thrill to have someone like that down and the kids
especially loved seeing him and getting the chance to face some balls from him.” Upwards of 150 people attended the launch day, with face-painting, fairy floss and balloon animals there to entertain the kids, and stalls from builders Burbank, also on hand to provide information for interested buyers. Donations of $1000 were also given to Aintree cricket club, Rockbank Rams football and netball club and the Rockbank Primary School. “The school was very interested to see what is going to happen there, because they will see quite a large intake once the houses are completed,” Ms Baldwin said. “We’ve had a lot of nice messages from people who came along to say thanks for the day, and we think this community is a very exciting development.” Ewen McRae

SES ‘project’ opens Bacchus Marsh SES is better prepared to meet increased demand, following the official opening of its new facility last week. The emergency response team received a $190,000 investment from the state government’s ‘Pick My Project’ initiative, with the money going towards a new storage and training facility. The new facility is on Wittick Street in Darley. In partnership with the Bacchus Marsh Lions Club, the storage and training facility has been built in an area much more conducive for training exercises and more suited to the overall traffic flow of the area. Previously, the SES in Bacchus Marsh battled traffic congestion which affected its ability to
quickly respond to emergencies. Local MP Steve McGhie attended the official opening of the new facility last week and said it was vital to have a well resourced SES in the fast-growing region. “SES emergency services are the backbone of communities like Bacchus Marsh and the government is proud to support this new facility thanks to the Pick My Project initiative,” Mr McGhie said. “Bacchus Marsh and the wider Moorabool region is expanding, and this new storage and training facility will equip the SES with the capabilities to handle emergencies and save lives.”
A 16-year-old Melton boy was among a number of youths arrested last week in relation to alleged thefts from multiple electronic stores in late October. The arrests were part of Operation Liege, a statewide operation targeting group thefts at retail, electronic and telecommunications stores across the state. Police executed warrants at nine properties on November 4, and located allegedly stolen property from thefts that occurred in Preston, South Morang and Springvale. Police last week charged the Melton boy with theft and handling stolen goods. He was remanded in custody.

Firies on the front line
More trains for Melton
By Ewen McRae Local firefighters have answered the call to help fight devastating bushfires gripping New South Wales. Crews from Caroline Springs, Bacchus Marsh and Ballan spent most of last week fighting alongside their NSW counterparts as the early season fires claimed hundreds of houses and tore through thousands of hectares of bushland. Speaking from the scene, Caroline Springs firefighter Tom Ferguson said when the call for help came through the group quickly mobilised and hit the road. “We got the call through about 4pm on the Sunday, and we were in the trucks and rolling by 6pm,” he said. “It wasn’t too bad when we first got up here. We drove straight to Singleton Military base, and it was OK but obviously very hot, dry and windy. “We stayed there for the Tuesday for the catastrophic conditions that were forecast for that day … it was a pretty calm morning which turned into a pretty hectic afternoon. “Once the winds kicked up in the arvo we started to get stuff lighting up all over the place. “Our strike team were quickly in action fighting to save some houses which we were able to do, and then regrouped over at Greta [near Newcastle] working on a scrub fire.” On November 13 there were still more than 50 trucks, in strike teams of five trucks, battling blazes in the area the Caroline Springs CFA was deployed. The team moved up to Coffs Harbour later in the week to continue the firefighting effort. Mr Ferguson said it was always good for firefighters from across Australia to band

together to battle fires. “The CFA is very organised in the sense of how we build our teams and the way that we attack these fires, so this is very similar to how we’ve done things in the past,” he said.

“We always back each other up and make sure no one gets hurt. “We’ve had these events in Victoria and other states come to help us so it’s good to give back.”
More trains are set to roll out in Melton next month, with additional peak time services to be introduced when the new Cobblebank Station opens on December 2. Passengers will have an extra morning peak service to Southern Cross and an extra afternoon peak service from Southern Cross. The morning service will depart Melton at 7.04am, dropping off passengers at Sunshine and Footscray, and arriving Southern Cross at 7.47am. In the evening a new service from Southern Cross Station to Melton will depart at 5.23pm picking up passengers at Footscray and Sunshine and arriving Melton at 6.04pm. Local MP Steve McGhie said the addition of Cobblebank Station and the new services were vital for Melton’s future. “We’re giving Melton passengers more transport options with new train and bus services to help get them were they need to go and home again,” Mr McGhie said. “We promised to deliver Cobblebank station and that’s exactly what we’re doing. I want to thank locals as we get on and finishing delivering this vital project.” A new bus route will also give people more options to get to local schools and train stations. The new Route 454 Cobblebank Station – Melton Station will connect locals between the new estate and the growing areas of Melton South. Ewen McRae

New dress code for ceremonies By Ewen McRae Changes to citizenship ceremonies were ticked off by Melton council last week, including the introduction of a dress code for all attendees. As part of a revised Australian Citizenship Ceremonies Code announced by the immigration minister in September, local councils are now mandated to hold a citizenship ceremony on Australia Day, and must enforce a dress code. Individual councils are able to set their own dress code, which must then be lodged with the minister.
‘‘
encouraged to wear traditional, national or cultural dress - Dress code
’’
Melton council last week endorsed a broad dress code, which applies to both those taking part in the ceremony and those in attendance. “In order to reflect the significance of becoming an Australian citizen at a City of Melton citizenship ceremony, attendees should wear either formal or business attire or smart casual attire,” the dress code states.
“Attendees are encouraged to wear traditional, national or cultural dress.” Councillor Sophie Ramsey questioned council officers at last week’s meeting on whether someone in the gallery coming straight from work in workwear would be admitted into the ceremony. “If someone is going to come in thongs and boardies, and they’ve had all day, I can understand it,” Cr Ramsey said. “But if they’ve come straight from work, running late maybe, is there some scope or wriggle room on the dress code?” Legal and governance manager Christine
Denyer said that clothing colour was not mentioned in the dress code and so shouldn’t impact on someone’s admittance to a ceremony. The changes come following a huge spike in the number of citizenship ceremonies and new citizens within the municipality. In 2018-19 there were 14 ceremonies within the council, conferring citizenship on 1302 residents, a jump from just five ceremonies and 509 conferees in 2017-18. Based on projections given to the council from the Department of Home Affairs, Melton council is expected to have between 25 and 34 ceremonies for 2480 conferees in the 2019-20 year.
On the state stage While most of the team play basketball outside of school, they play on different sides, but have gelled to form a formidable unit. Mr Gundry said his side was up for the challenge of the state competition. “I think some of the teams that we’ll come up against will be teams that train together at school and play in competitions together as well, so they’ll be well drilled opposition,” he said. “Having said that, I’m super proud of the side whatever happens, they’ve really done the school proud. “What an achievement it would be for a school like Exford, a tiny little country town, to be state champions. It would be unbelievable.” Ewen McRae Exford Primary School’s grade 5/6 basketball team is in the state finals. (Luke Hemer) 200508_03 12433719-ACM48-19
A group of basketballers from Exford Primary School is shooting for the top this week, as it takes on some of the best teams in the state. The school’s grade 5/6 girls team will compete in the state championships on November 19, after winning through the qualification to be among the best eight school sides of their age in Victoria. Coach Ross Gundry said it was a huge achievement for the school and the team. “This is the first time we’ve got to this stage in any sport in Exford’s history, so it’s pretty exciting,” Mr Gundry said. “They’re a very talented group. Really hard-working and fit, and we moved through some of the early rounds pretty easily and then had to fight hard in the regionals round to get to this point. “We don’t really have a basketball court at Exford, so there’s been some challenges along the way.”

A lot has changed in local sporting clubs over the years. New equipment and facilities, electronic scoreboards, and mobile phone apps are just some of the modern reinventions. But perhaps one of the biggest and most important changes sweeping through local clubs in recent years has been the attitudes to mental health and suicide prevention. Where once it could have been seen as a point of weakness to be vulnerable in front of your teammates and admit you were struggling, more and more local clubs are learning about the importance of mental health and encouraging members to speak openly about their struggles. Sydenham/Hillside Cricket Club is embracing this change. President Warren Hackney has reached out to the North Western Melbourne Primary Health Network (NWMPHN) and the club will host a mental health awareness talk in coming weeks. Mr Hackney said it was important for local clubs to help members off the field as well as on it. “I thought it would be a great topic to cover and to talk about with a group of 30 to 40, mostly men, knowing that men typically are the types not to discuss mental health issues,” he said. “I thought it was an important discussion to introduce to our group, and I think it’s timely in the current climate with the way mental health issues seem to be affecting so many people. “I think communities like ours, and we are a community, find it important to embrace social causes as much as we do the day-to-day operation of the club. “It’s important to educate our members on
mental health issues among members. “We’ve come a long way, but there’s still a long way to go,” Mr Hackney said. “I’ve been involved in sporting clubs for probably 35 years, and people are far more willing now to discuss and share personal experiences than they once were. “Back in the day, there was no discussion about your personal issues, that was seen as a sign of weakness and something that would be met with a fair bit of ridicule or bullying. “You think about it now, and it really was just bullying. Even if it’s done in a jocular way you would cop a lot of grief if you opened up the way we do now. “I think we’re getting better, and sessions like the one we’re about to do will be helpful in educating people further.” The NWMPHN is offering a short free online course – QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) – designed to help people recognise if someone they know is at risk of suicide. Mr Hackney recently completed the course, and said it was an important tool in combating mental health difficulties. “It was quite a helpful course,” he said. “It didn’t take too long, only an hour, and I learnt quite a few things from it. There were some things that I was probably already, to some extent, across, but it was good to get some pointers for how to treat certain situations. “Definitely a worthwhile thing for anyone to go through.” To access the training, visit:lifespan.qprtraining.com/setup.php Use the code PBT.

Reunion in the garden
Kinders get funding boost
By Ewen McRae It has been 60 years since Brian McGuigan and Jeanne Perry last saw each other, but an interest in gardening has brought the two former school friends together. The pair met at a naval base school in Singapore in 1954, with both their fathers based there and their mothers’ long-time friends. Just 11 at the time, they became strong friends, and even dated for a while when their families moved back to their England home in Portsmouth.
‘‘
It’s great to catch up after all these years

- Jeanne Perry Mrs Perry said she has ‘flickers of memory’ of their younger days together. “I remember I was a fair bit taller than him back then, so that’s certainly changed,” she said. “I remember going to the pictures in my school uniform with him, I think it was Trouble in Store with Norman Wisdom, who was a favourite of his, but when he tried to get me into ballroom dancing we sort of drifted apart, as you do.” Mr McGuigan took up ballroom dancing in his teens, and said that was basically the end of any romance between them. “I did try to partner up with her in dancing from memory, but after that you have exams and start to move away.” Mr McGuigan and his wife Pam moved to New Zealand in 1974, before moving to Brookfield in 2013. About 10 years ago the two school friends re-connected on Facebook.

On top of re-connecting with an old friend, Mrs Perry said she was curious to see what Australian gardens were like. “I don’t have a big garden, but I do like looking at other people’s gardens,” she said. “We exchanged a few messages early on, but it wasn’t really until we were coming out on this trip that we thought it would be nice to meet up.”
Mrs Perry and her husband, Alan, are visiting their son in Frankston South, but joined the McGuigans and the garden lovers group on their trip down the Great Ocean Road last week. “We’ve wanted to do the Great Ocean Road for a long time, so when we saw that Brian was doing it this week we thought it was now or never,” Mrs Perry said. “It’s great to catch up after all these years and share some stories.”

Melbourne Airport selects north-south orientation for third runway
NEWS
Securing a place in a local kindergarten is set to become easier for families, after a state government funding injection. The funds will support a one-stop shop for kinder enrolments, helping to simplify the enrolment process for families in 2020 and beyond with a central enrolment system. Melton council will receive $30,000 and Moorabool council will receive $12,000 as part of the funding. Central enrolment systems allow parents to register their interest in enrolling their child in more than one kindergarten service in one place, without having to work through the different processes used by individual service providers. Local MP Steve McGhie said the funding announcement was important for the fast growing Melton and Moorabool region. “Enrolling a child in kindergarten is an exciting step towards them getting a great early childhood education,” Mr McGhie said. “That’s why we’re helping to simplify this process for families across Melton and Moorabool.” It follows an election pledge from the state government to roll out three-year-old kindergarten funding across the state. Education Minister James Merlino said the funding boost would give local families the extra help they needed, and more funding was likely in the future. Ewen McRae

The decision follows an extensive planning review, which found a north-south runway orientation could provide greater capacity and availability for the airport. Melbourne Airport will now spend the next 1218 months undertaking extensive modelling, assessment and development of approval documentation, with the intent of releasing the Preliminary Draft Major Development Plan (MDP) for public comment in early 2021.

Following that exhibition period the Commonwealth Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development will assess the MDP and all the public submissions received before making a decision on the application.

19 November 2019 Melton City Council Community News
Get ready for summer holiday fun!
Mayor’s Message
Cr Lara Carli One of the key roles Council plays in planning and managing our community is to advocate to both the State and Federal Governments for infrastructure, resources and services that will help shape our City’s future. Over the next 20 years, the City of Melton will become Melbourne’s fastest growing muncipality, and Council has identified 10 priorities that reflect the needs of a city on the move. The priorities, which include roads and freight, health, education, public transport, and recreation, have been included in our Advocacy Priority booklet, which will be officially launched in the coming weeks.
The countdown to summer school holidays is on. There’s so much to do in the City of Melton – join us for games, craft, construction, movies, sporting events and more! NGV KIDS ON TOUR Hands-on activities at Caroline Springs Library, inspired by actual art exhibitions. Ages 5-12.
As one of Melbourne’s fastest growing municipalities, all three levels of government have an enviable opportunity to capitalise on our growth and take steps to plan and shape a community for tomorrow.
The booklet highlights our strengths, articulates our ambitions and outlines the opportunities for the City of Melton, and will be a powerful tool when Council invites the State and Federal Governments to deliver transformational infrastructure and services that support job creation, commercial investment and outstanding liveability. With summer just around the corner, Council is urging residents to clean up their properties before the start of this year’s fire season. Residents can take their green waste, to the Melton Recycling Facility and dispose of it for FREE until the end of December. Restrictions apply, so visit melton.vic.gov.au/waste for details. Please contact me about Council related issues on 0409 951 020, email: lara.carli@melton.vic.gov.au or at facebook.com/Cr.LaraCarli

Last week, I had the pleasure of attending the National Growth Areas Alliance (NGAA) conference, where delegates from across Australia came together to discuss the opportunities that exist in growth areas—like the City of Melton—and the importance of creating welcoming places at the heart of every community. The timely delivery of critical infrastructure and services will remain at the core of Council’s planning and advocacy priorities, but strategic place-making is also an important part of our ongoing work. As our City continues to evolve, so too will our community’s needs and expectations. With strategic vision, attention to detail, creativity, and long and short-term planning, Council strives to achieve the best outcomes for residents, particularly in our key advocacy priority areas.
In other pleasing news, Council was awarded a commendation in the NGAA Partnerships and Building Connections Award, for our work on the City Vista Sports Precinct Partnership. Well done to everyone involved in the development of this project. And finally, last week I also attended Council’s Djerriwarrh Festival. I was impressed by the wonderful line-up of activities and performances on offer, in particular the market stalls, food vans, kids’ activities and cultural entertainment. I was especially thrilled to see Sneaky Sound System, the iconic bonfire and, of course, spectacular fireworks display. I hope everyone who went enjoyed the event and celebrated all the great things about living and working in Melton. I welcome comments and feedback from residents. Surf’s up at Tullamarine By Laura Michell Surfers are just two months away from being able to catch a wave in Tullamarine. Urbnsurf will open its $28 million surf park near Melbourne Airport in January. The park is the first of its kind in the southern hemisphere. Members of Australia’s Olympic surfing team and junior surfing champions were among the first people to catch a wave at the new facility, testing out the surf last week. They were joined by representatives from Melbourne Airport, Surfing Victoria, Surfing Australia and Three Blue Ducks.
‘‘
We’re working to create an elite sports precinct
’’
- Linc Horton Urbnsurf founder Andrew Ross said the park has been seven years in the making. “Whether it’s learning how to stand up on a board for the first time, or pulling in to challenging barrels without having to travel for hours or be at the mercy of the elements, Urbnsurf Melbourne is set to become a new hub for the Victorian surf community and a must-visit destination for locals and tourists alike,” he said. Melbourne Airport’s chief of property, Linc Horton said the park would be a great addition to the airport. “We’re working to create an elite sports precinct right here at Melbourne Airport known as Elite Park, which will service travellers, the community and wider Victoria. Urbnsurf Melbourne is set to play a big foundational role as part of the precinct,” he said.

Directly opposite pretty parklands, this double-storey gem is stacked with appeal for families seeking pristine presentation and abundant indoor and outdoor space. Carpeted stairs head to a living room, around which are four bedrooms, each with a walk-in robe. The main, with balcony access, has a dual-basin en suite with enclosed toilet. The main bathroom and toilet are separate. A tiled lounge room is behind double front doors and shows the latte/sandstone palette as seen all through. Past a powder room and laundry, the family-meals space and kitchen is up next. The kitchen, with return island bench, has loads of storage including french-door pantry, a window splashback and a 900mm cooker. Ducted heating, evaporative cooling and security system are included. A vine-clad pergola provides relaxation space and there’s spacious lawn and a big shed out back as well. The remote-controlled double garage has internal access.
On about 580 square metres, close to schools, parklands, shops and freeway entry, this revamped residence is smart and stylish. Entry via double doors is into an L-shaped lounge room which has floorboards, and feature light fittings on high ceilings that dip and soar. This links with the tiled kitchen-meals space which has timber blinds (as on most windows) in a charcoal shade matching other accents. The refreshed skylit kitchen, with black stone benches and splashbacks, has a dishwasher, 900mm gas cooktop and wall oven. There are three good-sized bedrooms, the main with mirrored robes. They share a renewed bathroom with freestanding tub and a black stone vanity with undermount basin, plus a European laundry. The Colorbond-fenced backyard is a great size and includes a large shed, while the carport has drive-through access to the back.

Two losses have left Melton sitting behind the eight ball in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association east-west competition. Playing two one-dayers after the fixture was changed due to rain, Melton was hoping to pick up a couple of wins to move up the ladder. But a disastrous weekend with the bat ended those changes, leaving the Lions with just one win for the season. Lions director of coaching Anthony Gale said the two results came down to poor batting. “The boys haven’t gone well, he said. “It was a bad weekend. It was the kind of weekend that if you get two wins it sets up your season, now we’re behind the eight ball. “Our batting has been poor the last few weeks, we need to get them to spend time in the middle. On Saturday, the Lions faced Werribee at Macpherson Park. The Lions looked in trouble at 4-31 but steadied to put some runs on the board. While the scoreboard was ticking over, the Lions lost wickets at the wrong time and finished at 7-160. Skipper Brad Jones, coming in at number nine, top scored with 38. Dilshan Kanchana made a handy 37. Gale said they had plenty of starts but no one was able to go on and make a big score. “We had four starts in the 20s and 30s, we needed to have some of them 50s and 60s. “It was more than a competitive game, Werribee got the runs with two overs to go. The Lions had the Tigers under pressure early on, but the lack of runs on the board hurt them in the end. A late partnership got the Tigers across the line, finishing 6-161.
It was all single wicket takers for the Lions. It was a worse day with the bat on Sunday in the catch-up game against Balwyn for the Lions. Winning the toss, the Lions were bowled out for 96 with nearly nine overs remaining. Just two players, Ben MacRae (25) and Adrian Monitto (25 not out), reached double figures. “If we had been able to bat out those overs, we might have been able to put a competitive score on the board. The Lions bowlers, led by Jones, didn’t give up and came out firing. Jones took three early wickets to have Balwyn in trouble at 3-9. They were later 5-49. One partnership would be the difference, with Balwyn finishing 7-100. Jones finished with 5-27 but it wasn’t enough to get the win. The Lions sit 10th, with one win after four matches. Gale said the key for the next few weeks would be the batting. He said they would likely stick with the same guys, with not many to choose from in the lower grades. “We will work on that during the week and hopefully we can turn it around, he said. “We might shuffle the order around a bit. “We need a bit of luck. Maybe we need to play with a bit of freedom. The Lions this week face Taylors Lakes in another one-dayer. Taylors Lakes sits one spot above them on the ladder, also with one win.

SPORT Undefeated Darley still has room for improvement Darley’s strong early season form has continued with the Lions getting their third win of the Ballarat Cricket Association season. Having not played an official match the past two rounds due to the weather, the Lions were eager to get back on the pitch. The Lions bowlers did the job early, setting up the win against Golden Point. Lions coach Brian Wheelahan said he was rapt with the win. “It’s been weird the last month with not much cricket,” he said. “I think the players were getting a little bit frustrated. You can’t control the weather, so to get back out there and come away with the win, we’re rapt.” Wheelhan said an intra club match between
the first and second XI sides last week had paid off in helping get the players some time in the middle. At the weekend, Golden Point won the toss and elected to bat and was faced with a fired-up Ben Longhurst. Longhurst was playing his first match of the season after a calf injury. “Ben was outstanding,” Wheelahan said. “He had them under the pump at 4-14, having taken the wickets of the top four batsmen. “He was outstanding and was consistently asking the question.” The Lions bowled Golden Point out for just 119. Longhurst finished with 4-21 off his 10 overs. Rahmatullah Khwaja chipped in with three
wickets. The Lions got the runs but it wasn’t without the loss of a few wickets, finishing 6-121. Harry Killoran steadied the innings for the Lions, making 52 before running himself out. The win has the Lions sitting second, one of two undefeated teams after five rounds. Wendouree is the other undefeated team. Wheelahan said they were happy with how things are travelling. “I couldn’t be happier,” he said. “The guys have confidence and we believe our best competes against anyone. There is still room for improvement. “We still haven’t put together a polished performance with the bat and ball.” Wheelahan said the depth within the
club was massive, with pressure on players to perform. The Lions’ second side lost their first match of the season on Saturday. The Lions are hoping they finally get the chance to kick off some red ball cricket this weekend, with their last two-day match washed out. The Lions face Buninyong in a two-day match starting on Sunday. In other results, East Ballarat defeated Brown Hill, Mt Clear had an easy win against Naps-Sebas, Buninyong defeated North Ballarat and Wendouree had a big win against Ballarat-Redan. Tara Murray
Sports shorts CVWCCC Caroline Springs is through to the grand final of the Cricket Victoria Women’s Community Cricket north-west B T20 competition. The Falcons needed one win from their two matches on Sunday to seal a spot and were able to get the job done in match one. First up they beat Hoppers Crossing, before backing it up and beating Coburg in the second game. The Falcons, who have lost just one game, face Geelong in the grand final on Sunday.
CBL Bacchus Marsh Lions returned to the winners’ list in the Country Basketball League north-west. Coming off a bye, the Lions faced the Bendigo Braves at home. It was a strong four-quarter performance from the Lions, leading at every break on the way to a 78-70 win. Billy Feben led the way for the Lions, with 29 points, while Sam Byron and Jordan Kirk also scored double figures. The Lions this week have a double header, facing Maryborough Blazers on Saturday night and then Kyneton Tigers on Sunday.
Ballarat NL Bacchus Marsh has signed former Victorian Netball League player Maddie Smith for next year’s Ballarat Netball League season. Smith, who played with Melbourne University Lightning in the VNL, has more recently played at Mansfield, winning the club best and fairest in 2018. Mia White has committed to the Cobras. They have lost Kaila Ingham, who has moved to Rupertswood, alongside former coach Michael Saker.

Centrals’ missed chances By Tara Murray Melton Centrals will have to bowl well if it’s to take victory against Grand United in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association Division 4 Charles Clark Shield. Returning to the field after an interrupted month of cricket, Centrals were looking forward to getting stuck into time at the crease. Electing to bat, Centrals were bowled out for 205 in the 60th over. Captain Adam Hulett said the score was below par. “It’s short of where we want to be,” he said. “We were 0-80 odd and then we collapsed. We had a lot of starts, but no one went on with it. “It’s good to get starts, but you need at least one or two players to go on with it. “We needed another 70 to 80 runs. We would have liked a few extra runs on the board.” Waduwidanalage Rangika top scored
for Centrals with a half century, while Ross Caldera was given the opportunity at the top of the order and made 40-odd. Hulett said that the lack of training and match practice the past month was no excuse for not batting to their potential. Grand United faced 18 overs before stumps and will resume at 2-59. Hulett said they took the chances they had in that period. Fifteen-year-old Keiron Harrington, in his senior debut, took the first wicket for Centrals. “He looks like a really good cricketer, with hopefully a long future with the club.” He said getting games into the likes of Harrington and another youngster Callum Gregorio was something they were focused on. Hulett said they would back their bowlers in this week. “We have some good bowlers and we’re not out of the game, by any stretch,” he said. Hulett said it was hard for them to get a feeling
where they sit in the division 4 competition, having completed just one game. It’s Centrals first season in division 4 after winning the division 5 premiership last season. “The only game we have finished is against Grand United,” he said. “If we get a result this week, it means our only two completed matches are against one side. “It is what it is. Hopefully from here on in that we start to play cricket and start playing well.” In other matches, Caroline Springs had a solid day out against St Andrews. St Andrews made 194 with Caroline Springs 0-4 at stumps. In division 5, Melton South Royals are on track for victory against Sanctuary Lakes. Having bowled Sanctuary Lakes out for 104, the Royals are 3-73 in reply. In division 3, Sydenham-Hillside is on top against East Keilor. East Keilor was bowled out for 134, with Sydenham-Hillside 1-80 in reply.
VTCA Sydenham-Hillside suffered a big loss to Westmeadows in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association women’s T20 competition. The Warriors had a good day with the bat, making 1-168 from its overs. The young Storm were bowled out for just 29, with Katie Fenech top scoring with seven. The Storm sit bottom without a win after five rounds.

Brave Saints endure tough start to the season St Anthony’s put on a brave performance with the bat to avoid an outright loss against Gisborne in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association McIntyre Cup. Having already conceded first innings points, the Saints had a task ahead of them if they were to avoid conceding full points against the form team of the competition. Saints captain-coach Cam Clayton said day one of the match against Gisborne was their worst day of the season. The Saints were bowled out for 90, with the Dragons 1-173 at stumps in reply. “It hasn’t been the best start to the year,” he said. “Last Saturday was our worst day of the year for all-round cricket, with both bat and ball. “We’re working hard to get back on track.
“We have to change the way we approach things. The list we have got isn’t going to match it with the top couple of sides. “We’re just going to continue to give it our all.” The Saints were dealt two blows before day two of the match. Opening bowler Anmol Singh Chahal was not going to bat on day two of the match, leaving them one down. Youngster Alex Kerr hurt his arm last week and with his arm in a cast, was also ruled out. The Dragons decided to continue their innings, leaving the Saints with just nine players in the field. Clayton said he thought the Dragons might have declared at their day one score. “We were two down before the first ball,” he
said. “We fielded with nine players … Once Tom Sanders got his century they declared.” The Dragons declared at 2-201, with a lead of 111. The Saints had to score that to avoid the outright loss. They did, bowled out for 162 in 75 overs. Clayton said he was proud of the group and how they went about it “We didn’t get the points, but it was a win for us,” he said. “They are well drilled and it’s a tough game mentally. Darren McCrae made 28 not out off 240 balls. “He batted throughout the whole day. It was pretty outstanding.” The Saints sit bottom, without a win after five rounds. They have three draws from washouts. Clayton said this was the worst start to
the season weather-wise in his time in the competition. He said the aim for the side was to be consistent the next few weeks and be competitive against every team. “We’re trying as hard as we can,” he said. “Alex [Kerr] is out and there will be a couple of other changes. There’s guys in the twos that are knocking down the door.” St Anthony’s this week face Woodend, who is also without a win. In other games, Bacchus Marsh beat Woodend, Romsey was too good for Riddell and Diggers Rest Bulla had a massive win against Sunbury United. In the Jensen Shield, Eynesbury beat Romsey. Tara Murray
Titans finally break drought with big win
A-League Western United 0 lt Newcastle Jets 1 (Thurgate 36) At GMHBA Stadium, Geelong Newcastle Jets goalkeeper Glen Moss was a thorn in the side of Western United striker Besart Berisha. (Luke Hemer) 200783_12
Slow starts hurt United By Lance Jenkinson Is it time for Western United to shake up its starting line-up? Slow starts have been United’s Achilles heel so far in its inaugural A-League season. The issue reared again in an upset 1-0 loss to Newcastle Jets at GMHBA Stadium on Saturday night. “The mindset needs to be a lot better right from kick off,” coach Mark Rudan said. “The intensity, the energy, it has to be there right from the outset, [otherwise] teams will punish you, irrespective of who they are.” For the fourth game in a row, Western United stared a deficit in the face. United was made to pay for its lacklustre start by young Jets striker Angus Thurgate, who scored his second A-League goal in the 36th minute. It was by no means a surprise lead for the Jets, who had been the more proactive side in the first half and were keen to pounce on the sloppy defending of the United backline. Rudan stopped short of suggesting there will be wholesale changes to the starting side because of the slow starts, but it will be up for discussion this week. “We’ll see what the answer might be
throughout the week,” he said. “Like I said, every player has to be on their toes and if we make changes, we make changes.” The silver lining for Western United is its response after conceding early goals. United has shown plenty of character to get back into games, but the frustration is that it takes a jolt in the form of conceding a goal before they click into gear. Rudan sent his team out in the second half with clear instructions and they followed them to the nth degree. In stark contrast to the first half, United moved the ball quicker, got into position faster and played with more variety, utilising both the wings and central avenues to put the Jets defence under pressure. If it was not for a goalkeeping masterclass from experienced Jets custodian Glen Moss, the outcome might have been different for Western United. Western United thought it had found an equaliser when Josh Risdon headed in a goal. However, upon VAR review, United striker Besart Berisha was rightly adjudged offside in the build-up play and the goal was scrubbed off. There were no complaints from Rudan about the decision. He did, however, rue the poor finishing of
24 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY Tuesday, 19 November, 2019
United’s attackers. “I thought Connor Pain had a fantastic opportunity,” Rudan said. “He goes low there instead of high, he made it easy for the keeper, then Besart straight after, straight away from the corner. “It was just one of those games where we did everything but score and get ourselves back into the game.” Risdon was praised for his hard work. Returning from Socceroos duty, the winger’s workload was monitored throughout the game and he did not wane from his usual output. “His high speed sprints were unbelievable,” Rudan said. “We were tracking him live today, we had to be mindful of everything that he’s gone through. “It shows a test of his character, his mental fortitude and how strong he is, he just never gave up.” Max Burgess provided a spark off the bench, slotting into the midfield position vacated by the substituted Connor Chapman. United sorely missed the creativity of Panagiotis Kone, who was out with a hamstring injury. After five weeks of playing matches in Victoria, Western United will take to the skies to face a desperate Centrals Coast Mariners coming off two heavy defeats.
North Western Titans celebrated victory for the first time in the Baseball Victoria Summer league division 3 west competition. Having shown improvement the past season and a half, the Titans finally broke through on Saturday for their first win, beating the Geelong Baycats White. Making the win more special was the way they did it, smashing the Baycats 21-14. Titans president Danny Haymes said it was exciting to see the hard work the team had put in result in a win. “They played well and they dominated,” he said. “The scoreline didn’t reflect the game. We were up 21-7 going into the last inning. “They played well. We knew it was coming and it showed what they can do.” Haymes said there were a few celebration drinks after the win, which means so much to the playing group. He said the pleasing thing was the way they went about it. “It was a real team effort,” he said. “Tess [Warner] had a great game at the plate and a lot of the girls had multiple hits. Kim [Borg] pitched for three innings and conceded seven runs. “They hit the ball well and ran well. They got a double play. They took the opportunities when they came. “It was more a team effort than anything.” With one win on the board, Haymes said the confidence would continue to grow. He said the players kept working hard at training to put themselves in positions to win games. “They are training hard and people from other clubs want to come play with us,” he said. “They are improving a lot and a lot are playing in the men’s second side and are doing alright. “They are understanding the game a lot more.” Meanwhile, the Titans’ men’s side suffered a ninth innings loss to the Chelsea Dolphins on Sunday. The Titans led 9-8 heading into the ninth innings, before Chelsea scored two runs to steal the win 10-9. Cameron Wilson was the standout with the bat for the Titans including hitting a home run.
