Doug’s fight for right By Ewen McRae Doug Chappel is no stranger to taking centre stage, but even he admits to having a few nerves ahead of his next performance bout. The Burnside comedian will exchange microphone for boxing gloves next month as he strives to change minds and make a difference in the community about violence against women. Two horrific attacks in Melbourne struck a chord with the veteran comic. Fellow comedian Eurydice Dixon was brutally raped and murdered in June, 2018, and 19-year-old student Aiia Maasarwe suffered the same fate while on her way home from one of Chappel’s stand-up gigs in January.
‘‘
Both of those deaths hit the comedy community hard - Doug Chappel
’’
“I knew Eurydice a bit – not really well, but we’d crossed paths quite a bit at comedy events,” Chappel said. “And from the times I’d spoken to her, I didn’t see one mean bone in her body. She was just a lovely person. So to have such a horrible thing happen her was just shocking. “And then just seven months later, I’d finished a show, was feeling really good and happy, and then I find out the next day that Aiia was raped and murdered an hour after my show. It really struck home. “To think that a couple of hours earlier she’s laughing at my show and having a great time … you think, even though you can’t do anything, you think about if the show was a bit longer or shorter she may have caught a different train and got home safe. “Both of those deaths hit the comedy community hard, especially our female comics, who do late gigs like the rest of us … as a male, I felt like I wanted to try and do something.” Chappel decided entering a male-dominated arena such as boxing would be a good way to spread his message. He has been training hard every day for the August 2 bout, in which he will face an opponent yet to be announced. His son will also fight on the night, with Chappel jumping back into the ring for the first time in 25 years. Chappel, who has lost 20 kilograms while training, said he hoped for a big crowd. “Boxing is traditionally a male-oriented sport, but it’s between two consenting people,”
Comedian Doug Chappel is stepping back into the ring. (Luke Hemer)
he said. “This way I can reach men and maybe we can get some change in the community. “I’ve been in comedy for 22 years and this past year has seen the biggest emotional turmoil in our community, so we want to make sure what happened to Eurydice and Aiia doesn’t happen again.

Campaign rubbishes tip decision By Tate Papworth A leading campaigner has urged the community to help continue the fight against the proposed expansion of the Melbourne Regional Landfill at Ravenhall. Last month the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) approved an additional seven cells at the landfill, which will allow the site to operate until about 2036. The decision drew the ire of both the Brimbank and Melton councils and community groups.

Stop the Tip lead campaigner Marion Martin said the decision was disappointing, but vowed to continue the fight. “We’ve been given information from lawyers that they believe there are errors of law in the VCAT judgment,” Ms Martin said.
“I believe the council’s have until the 15th of this month to lodge an appeal, so we’ll wait to see if they take it to the Supreme Court.” In a bid to push the councils to take the matter to the Supreme Court, Stop the Tip have created an online petition. Residents are asked to sign the petition which reads: “Dear Councillor, I am writing to urge you to continue fighting on behalf of our community to stop Cleanaway’s massive expansion of the Ravenhall Tip.” Ms Martin said it was vital those concerned

Two Melton sports clubs will help get more locals active thanks to some government assistance. Melton Bowling Club and Melton Hockey Club will each receive $3000 from the state government’s Active Club Grants program, which supports clubs in introducing social, flexible and accessible sports programs. Melton MP Steve McGhie said it was fantastic there would be more activities, teams and opportunities for the community to get involved in sport. “Active Club Grants will help create more opportunities for people of all ages, genders and abilities to get active and enjoy the benefits of a healthy lifestyle,” Mr McGhie said. “Taking part in community sport is a great way to make new friends and get active with others while also improving your own health and wellbeing. I encourage everyone in Melton to look at what opportunities are available.” VicHealth acting chief executive Lyn Roberts said Active Club Grants helped get more people in the community moving in new ways. “We’re thrilled to be able to support local sporting clubs in Melton to provide more opportunities for the community to get active through a sport they enjoy,” Dr Roberts said. “These grants will help get more Victorians in Melton into the game by offering modified or social versions of traditional sport where your age, ability, background, lifestyle or gender isn’t a barrier to taking part.”

Feedback forum on runway plan By Tate Papworth and Ewen McRae
Lauren sets the record straight Less than two years after taking up power lifting, Melton’s Lauren Tyrrell is a national record holder. The mother of three holds the Australian deadlift record for the 75kg weight division, after lifting 192.5kg earlier this year. While she was already training at the gym, a family crisis in 2017 saw her narrow her focus. “About two years ago my daughter had emergency brain surgery, and after that I felt like I needed to do something different to help clear my head,” Ms Tyrrell said. “Someone suggested I try powerlifting, and that’s how I found my coach, Terence Kuipers, at Mick’s Gym in Melton. So he helped me build up my strength, and somehow I had a bit of a knack for it. “I can’t thank Terence enough, he knows me better than I know me so if he says I can do something I believe him. “I was only dead lifting a bit over 100kg early on, but I worked hard on my technique, and now I’m really trying to break the 200kg barrier.” Ms Tyrrell juggles the demands of her sport with raising three kids, but said she manages the challenges of both fairly well. “One of my kids has had brain surgery and another had open heart surgery, but going to the gym helps,” she said.

A workshop to get community feedback on the new Melbourne Airport runway will be held in Melton. The airport last week announced that plans to build a third runway with an east-west alignment had been put on hold because a north-south runway could possibly “deliver superior outcomes”. The airport already has two runways – one north-south, the other east-west. The airport has long planned to include four runways in a hashtag formation and had resolved to build its third runway with an east-west alignment. But Melbourne Airport chief executive Lyell Strambi said new data had prompted a re-think. “Our review provides strong evidence to suggest the north-south parallel could now provide a superior outcome in terms of availability, capacity, long-term investment profile and community impacts,” he said. Mr Strambi said it had been determined an east-west runway would allow for significantly less traffic than first thought. If the airport opts to build in a north-south direction, it would mean an rise in traffic over Brimbank suburbs and less traffic over Melton. Mr Strambi said a decision on the best option would be made as soon as possible. “We really need the runway capacity and the sooner we can build it, the better,” he said. The airport anticipates a three-month review period during which 18 community workshops will be held. Mr Strambi said it was imperative the airport made the correct decision, but was conscious of its responsibility to neighbouring communities. A workshop will be held in Melton from 6pm on Tuesday, July 23. Register: bit.ly/2JnrfkX

Council moves on land package By Ewen McRae

Curtis in a spin for state titles
(Joe Mastroianni)
A long-standing plan to rezone a large portion of land north of Ballan for residential use is a step closer to fruition, following last week’s council meeting. A proposal to rezone a portion of land on Ballanee Road – roughly 1.7km north of Ballan – from Farming Zone (FZ) to Rural Living Zone (RLZ) has been before council a number of times since November 2015, but now looks likely to happen following the passing of an amended motion last week. The proposal is for a 95 hectare block of land to be subdivided into 42 lots, varying from two to 2.5 hectares. It had previously been knocked back by council due to incomplete documentation and a lack of strategic justification. The recommendation from council officers was to defer consideration of the proposal, however mayor Paul Tatchell successfully moved a motion to finalise the planning scheme amendment documents and begin the process of exhibiting the plans to the public. “The reality is we have one, five-acre block for sale in this whole district,” Cr Tatchell said. “Every day as a Moorabool councillor someone will say to me ‘don’t let Ball become like Bacchus Marsh’. The scope that we want in rural living is exactly this proposal, it’s the same reason that I came to Ballan 27 years ago.” Councillor Tom Sullivan argued that the justification for the rezoning was not sufficient, and they should defer their decision. “It is a spot re-zoning, and experience of that is that they generally fail and do not pass the initial threshold of the strategic justification,” he said. The proposal will now go to the planning minister for consideration.
Kurunjang carpenter Curtis Williams has set his sights on the big stage after making the state finals of a national DJ competition. Mr Williams has been DJing at venues across Melbourne for the past three years, and has received a wildcard entry into the Your Shot competition, a national DJ talent search attracting thousands of entrants. Mr Williams will compete at the Victorian finals on August 10 and 11, and said music became a passion many years ago. “I first knew I wanted to be a DJ when a friend of mine took me to one of his gigs where I first experienced the energy of a crowd and the pure joy it gave my friend as he was playing,” Mr Williams said. “From that moment, I realised that my love for music was able to be enjoyed for not just myself but an entire audience.” Mr Williams said he was looking forward to taking his opportunity at the state finals. “It seems that these days DJing has become more about how many people you can get through the door rather than the skills that you can bring to your sets,” he said. “Your Shot is a massive opportunity. Making friends with people with the same passion and it is something that could open the door to chances that would otherwise may be out of reach as an unknown DJ from a small Victorian town.” Ewen McRae

S WEEK’S SELECTION: A Sydenham student is set to officiate one of the country’s largest football carnivals. Sam Dunne said his selection in the School Sport Victoria Australian football umpire’s team was a fantastic opportunity. “To umpire a tournament with kids from all around the country is really cool,” he said. “I did it last year and really enjoyed it, so I’m looking forward to heading down to Launceston.” Dunne said it was also a terrific opportunity to expand his skills. “I get to umpire with people from all over the country, so it’s a good way to get to know each other and learn a thing or two.” At 17, Dunne now has more than four years
of experience and hopes to continue developing his career. “I just lost interest in playing footy, but really wanted to stay involved in the game, which is when I turned to umpiring. “It’s been better than I thought it would be, I really love being around football competitions.” While he’s enjoyed the ride, Dunne said there’s been a few challenges along the way. “I think the biggest thing you have to develop is a thick skin on the field,” he said. Lost chance spurs family By Adam Cooper/The Age Neill Jones has every reason to be angry, but doesn’t have the time. The 60-year-old father of three is paying with his life for the failures of doctors in 2010 and then in 2015 to advise him of the presence of a cancerous mass on his appendix. Had they done their job, a lump that was 10 centimetres back then could have been removed, and the former teacher would have been saved. Instead, by the time it was properly detected last year – in what Mr Jones and his lawyer, Alice Robinson, refer to as “the oh-no scan” – the mass had begun seeping poisonous mucus throughout his body. He now can’t be cured. His family is pushing for the introduction of legislation where doctors are bound to check through with their patients a list of everything raised in a consultation, to ensure there are no unanswered questions when they part. Because while Mr Jones still should be teaching, cycling and watching his son and two daughters raise their own families, he is undergoing defensive chemotherapy and focused on making his remaining days count. “It is what it is. I know that’s a trite saying but I wish back in 2010 someone had looked at the scan and said, ‘You’ve got a growth, we’ll do an appendectomy and you’ll be all good.’ But they didn’t, so …” Mr Jones trails off. In 2010, Mr Jones was treated for kidney stones. But a urologist had scans done and saw a mass on the image, which concerned him enough to order another image. He wrote notes recommending surgical intervention, but never discussed this course with his patient. Mr Jones and wife Lynn are adamant that had a doctor raised the growth in discussion they would have gone straight to a specialist.
Neill Jones holds a painting from a young family friend that he is inspired by. (Darrian Traynor/The The Age Age)
Instead, for reasons unexplained, the urologist filed the scan and did not advise surgical intervention. But, five years later, he returned to his GP complaining of more pain, and the second doctor failed to detect the mass on his appendix. The Jones’ remember another doctor becoming upset a year ago, repeatedly saying, “I’m so sorry,” when the mass was finally detected. By that stage, though, it was too late.
An aggressive “washout” of the mucus was an option to prolong Mr Jones’ life, but he and his wife, who met as teachers at Melton South Primary School, decided against a procedure. His family hopes the legislation they are pushing for would ensure doctors are more communicative and required to explain every part of their consultation. “An architect’s mistakes are for everyone to see,” Mr Jones said. “A doctor’s mistakes are buried.”
Flower show funds tweak Moorabool council has approved more than $175,000 in community grants, but one event was approved even though it failed to meet the council’s own criteria. Council received 26 applications for its grants program in March, ranging from local events to building improvements. Each application was assessed by council officers and needed to score above 70 per cent on the criteria to be approved, with 18 proposals meeting that level. Cr Jarrod Bingham successfully argued an amendment to the motion to include a $3000 grant to support the Bacchus Marsh Flower and Garden show, which scored 64.93 per cent. “The flower and garden show has been ongoing for a number of years now, with the primary purpose of fundraising towards an indoor swimming pool,” Cr Bingham said. “I see this as a return on investment to expand an important event that will help the region.” Cr Tom Sullivan argued that picking just one of the eight unsuccessful applications for approval was not how council should be seen to conduct business. “Council put in place a process for the assessment of these community grants,” he said. “This group missed the mark by a whole five points – not a smidgen, a fairly substantial amount below the threshold.” The motion passed three votes to two. A champion teacher Diggers Rest Primary School teacher Christine Nunn was the one with show and tell last week – not her prep pupils. The talented squash player returned to the classroom with three medals after competing in three championship events at the Gold Coast. Nunn won gold in the World Doubles Championships women’s pairs, silver in the mixed doubles at the same event and then claimed silver in the women’s singles at the Australian National Championships. Nunn said it had been an exciting few weeks. “I played at the Commonwealth Games last year, but I’ve never won a medal of this nature,” she said. “My [doubles] partner won gold at the Commonwealth Games last year and has a
high singles ranking. “We’ve played together before and know each other, that helps in terms of direction on the court. [Winning] it was a big surprise and I was very happy about it.” A grad teacher, Nunn said she had taken a step back from squash as she concentrated on her career and believes that may have played a role in her recent success. “I had no expectations,” she said. “I’m not able to travel as much now. If I get the chance to play big tournaments at home, I’ll put my hand up.” Nunn said her pupils had been pretty excited by the news she had won gold. “The kids have loved tracking my success.” Tara Murray

MY PLACE Trevor Faure is president of Melton community radio station 979FM. He chats with Ewen McRae. What is your connection to Melton?
We give our local organisations and groups a voice. We have very dedicated local members/ volunteers who provide entertainment and information to the City of Melton. We offer companionship and support to people who live alone, working in their shed and garages or driving in their cars.
I have lived in Melton for over 10 years. I joined 979FM in October, 2016, and trained to be an announcer and now I am president of the 3RIM Incorporated/979FM radio station. What do you like best about the area?
What has been some of the highlights from your time at 979FM?
I love the diversity and how different each part of our City of Melton is different. The City of Melton has a great community spirit with has a wide range of events. What could make the area better? I believe having our own local hospital and access to tertiary education facilities, such as having a University or TAFE college, would be a great advance for our area.
I couldn’t go past our wonderful food places especially Melton Chicken Stop and Melton Noodle Cuisine. I have a bias towards these two places as they are proud sponsors on 979FM. How did you become involved with 979FM? Tell me about the station. The station provides a true community radio service across the City of Melton. For almost 40 years, our valued volunteers have provided continuous programming 24 hours per day from our local studio complex in Melton. Our variety of programming is produced for and by members of the local community. Our programming includes specialist and general
(Joe Mastroianni)
Where is your favourite place to go for a feed in the area?
music programs, local community news and talkback, culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) programming, youth oriented, religious and local sports including coverage of Ballarat Football League games. We have ethnic programs such as Maltese, Spanish, Indian, Samoan, Chinese and Croatian, music programs from Jazz and the ’60s to today. We are lucky to have youth presenters who mainly had their start on a show called the Homework Club (Thursdays from 4pm) which is presented by DJ Will and students from
Staughton College in Melton South. DJ Will is a great advocate for the youth and does an amazing job training them. I have a community radio program called MCR: Melton Community Radioshow which is on every Tuesday night from 8pm. On it, groups or individuals promote their organisations and the listeners benefit from hearing and knowing about things happening in our great city. Why do you think the station is so important to the local community?
There are many highlights, especially when you work as a team. I love being connected to the community and involved in events like Somersault in Caroline Springs, Djerriwarrh Festival, school fetes, carols by candlelight and cultural festivals. Another highlight was interviewing the candidates for the seat of Melton for the state election and the seat of Gorton for the federal election. It was a great insight to politics and seeing the passion the candidates had. This is what I love being a part a community organisation … getting a chance to do things for the community and build skills. I was privileged to take on the presidency role at the station in November last year. What would people be surprised to know about you? I have been in the entertainment industry for 20 years as an actor. I have travelled to Hollywood and Bali to work with teachers from the Stella Adler Academy of Acting and Theatre – the same acting school that Mark Ruffalo went to. I have worked on many pilots, TV shows and commercials in various roles from an extra to speaking parts.

SPORT Burras stay upbeat despite being down in the dumps
Diggers Rest’s Alec Del Papa tries to break away from the pack. (Mark Wilson)
Diggers Rest is in is unfamiliar territory after losing three of its past four matches in the Riddell District Football League. The most consistent team in the competition in recent history remains in the top six, but it hasn’t been the Burras side that fans have become used to. But Burras’ assistant coach Shane Bishop said they weren’t hitting the panic button. “There’s still time to get it right before the end of the season,” he said. “It could be a number of things. We don’t want to blame injuries, but we’ve had four or five of our best 22 missing in recent weeks. We’re just not finding the form we want to be.” On Saturday, the Burras lost to Riddell 14.11 (95)-10.13 (73). After a relatively even first half on the scoreboard, the Bombers kicked seven goals to four after the main break to run away with the win.
The two sides had the same number of scoring shots in the second half, but the Burras couldn’t convert. Bishop said they were beaten in the middle of the ground, which made it hard for both defenders and forwards. Josh Wallace was named the Burras’ best, while Bishop said Luke Delahey and Patrick Jackson down back also had good games. Deven Costigan kicked three goals in the loss. Bishop said the most disappointing thing for the side was losing at home. “We’ve tried to make our home ground a bit of a fortress,” he said. “We’ve lost two games there this year. “With the home field advantage and the crowd, it should be going our way.” The loss leaves the Burras in sixth spot, but only percentage behind second. Only a game separates the top six, making for an interesting run home to the finals.
Burras better for the win By Tara Murray Diggers Rest won a vital game against Riddell in the Riddell District Netball League on Saturday. With both sides hoping to make finals, a win was important with a tough run home. It was an even first quarter, before the Burras extended the lead to six goals at the main break. They built on that foundation throughout the second half to win 54-34. Burras coach Pam Strong said it was a great performance. “I wouldn’t have thought it was a win by 20 goals,” she said. “It was really high intensity and a skilled game. “The first quarter was a bit frantic, but everyone settled into the game after that.” Kathy Dicker scored 39 goals for the Burras, while fellow goaler Monika Dimovski was named their best. Strong said having a consistent team on the court had been a key for them in the first half of the season. “We’re really settled now and everyone is at training and we’re able to work on certain things. “They’re still young kids, who are all 21-22 bar a couple, it doesn’t matter who we put on the court.” While the fifth-placed Burras have had a consistent team so far, it will change in the coming weeks. A number of players are unavailable for several weeks in the run home. Strong, who is heading to England for the netball world cup, will also miss a number of weeks. Jorgia Leonard, who is returning from a broken foot and young goaler Mallie Whelan, will step up into the A-grade side to help out. Strong said they should have everyone back for the last round, and finals if they make it. The Burras are currently three games clear of Melton Centrals and Woodend-Hesket, both just outside the top six. “We want to make the top six, that is the aim. “We have Rupo this week and still have to play Macedon. I don’t think there’s any easy games. “They will finish off the season, they are good enough. It’ll be an interesting few weeks.” Strong said it had been a mixed year for their other sides. The B-grade side has struggled with injuries, their C-grade is third, while its a development year for their under-19s. In other A-grade results, Melton Centrals continue to stay in the finals mix. On Saturday, they beat Woodend-Hesket 50-35. 20 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ JULY 9, 2019

The Centrals got out to an early nine-goal lead, which stayed around that margin for the next two quarters. In the last quarter Centrals were able to extend it out for a good win. Rita White-Kay was named Centrals’ best for the game.
Rockbank had a tough day against Wallan, losing 51-29. Olivia Burrows was named the Rams best. Despite the loss, the Rams mathematically still remain in finals contention. Rupertswood was the other winner, beating Broadford.
Despite hitting a flat spot, Bishop said the club and the players were confident about coming good. The Burras will this week face fourth-placed Rupertswood. “There’s still time to get it right before the end of the season,” Bishop said. “This week is a real opportunity to get stuff right straight away, as opposed playing one of the lower teams you will beat. “It’s an opportunity to try things out against a stronger opponent.” In other results, Melton Centrals’ finals hopes suffered a setback in a 14.10 (94)-9.14 (68) loss at the hands of Woodend-Hesket. Rockbank was comprehensively smashed by Wallan 60.18 (378)-3.5 (23), while Rupertswood beat Broadford 19.17 (131)-8.3 (51). Tara Murray
Springers look forward to the run home Caroline Springs men’s Vic League 3 team is expecting to improve in the second half of the season. Playing in the higher division for the first time, the Springers have taken some time to adapt to the standard. They sit seventh at the mid-point of the season. Springers coach Hans Kovarik said he was happy with the first part of the season. “Hopefully we’ll finish in the middle of the field, as we keep getting players back. “It’s the first time coming up from metro, it’s big for the group. “We’ve had some players playing at a higher level, and those playing at the higher level for first time are doing well. “I’m not disappointed with the results and neither should they be. “We’ll be better in the back half of the season.” Kovarik said the biggest challenge this year was work commitments had made it difficult to field a consistent side. “Getting a full team is hard,” he said. “We’re still managing to get a team on the park each week. Some games it’s a mish-mash of different skill sets.” Kovarik said there was a fantastic attitude among the playing group. He said there was plenty of good signs going forward for the small club and in the next three to five years they expected massive growth with plenty of housing estates being built in Caroline Springs and surrounding areas. Players from outside the area are also interested in joining the club. They’ve got one player in their men’s side from Bendigo. He said they were hoping to have a third men’s side in the near future. Their second side is currently sitting third and on track to play finals. The Springers return to the field this weekend, after two weekends off. The Vic League 3 men’s side faces St Bernards on Saturday. Their Vic League 2 women’s side, which sits third, faces Melton on Saturday in the local derby. All sides had the weekend off for the Junior State Championships, with two Caroline Springs players involved. Tara Murray

Hillside coach to call it a day at season’s end Hillside coach Steve Burns has decided his time as the Sharks’ coach will finish at the end of this year’s Essendon District Football League division 1 season. Burns, who is in his fifth year of coaching of the side, said he made the decision at the end of last year. He said he felt the time was right to have a break from coaching, having coached Taylors Lakes and then Hillside for the past 13 years. “I sat down with the president Scott Marsden [last year] and said that I wanted one more year,” he said. “I wanted to get right the stuff that we didn’t get right last season.” Burns said he reckoned the current playing group would require three to four years to really bloom – and that he did not think he could provide that sort of commitment.
“Scott came to me recently to see I had changed my mind – I hadn’t,” Burns said. Burns said that while he was enjoying game days and working with a young group, he was starting to struggle with the grind of training. He said that if the club could keep the playing group together, the next coach would be very lucky. “We had 16 guys under-22 against Tullamarine,” he said. “They’re playing so well and following the instructions and rules. “It’s been really good and I’m glad that I stayed the extra year.” Burns said he was unsure if he would coach again and that not constantly thinking football would be unusual. He joked that his wife might be ready to kick
him out of the house after a few months. “It might only take three months for me to want to coach again or I might not want to coach again,” he said. “I’m looking forward to it. It’ll be interesting to see how I cope.” The Sharks are in fifth position, one game outside the top four. Marsden said he had been in conversations with Burns in recent months. “Steve has been really good and brought a good culture to the club,” he said. “He feels the time is now for the club to have a new voice and I agree with him. Five years at a club as a senior coach is a long time.” Marsden said the club was thankful for the contribution that Burns had made at the club.
The Sharks have played division 1 finals in the past two years and were five points from a grand final last year. “He has driven the football club like his own baby,” Marsden said. “He’s laid the foundations and supported the juniors really well.” Hillside is advertising the coaching position for next season. Marsden said the club wanted to get in early in a bid to secure the best coach available. “We want someone who can take us to premier division and to build on the current culture,” he said. Bloods seek consistency By Tara Murray Melton is hunting consistency in the back half of the Ballarat Football League season. While sitting in the top six, the Bloods haven’t been able to put together two wins in a row since rounds three and four. Their win-lose routine continued on Saturday when they beat arch rival Melton South. Bloods coach Aaron Tymms said they wished they knew why they were playing up-and-down football. “Getting some consistency is the main thing we’re looking for,” he said. “When we play well, our footy is as good as any. Our bad footy is horrid. We need to close that gap.” On Saturday, the Bloods downed the Panthers 10.15 (75)-5.3 (33). Like the first time the teams met this season, the Bloods didn’t make the most of their early opportunities. The Bloods had 25 scoring shots to eight, but they led by just 20 points at the last break. “We didn’t take our opportunities early,” Tymms said. “We kept them in the game until midway through the third quarter. “We had the kicking yips again. We had them early in the season, but we thought we had fixed them.” Ben Archard, Liam Carter and Ryan Davis kicked two goals each for the Bloods. Seventeen-year-old Ben McMahon was named the Bloods’ best, while first-gamer Harrison Hanley had a good outing. For the Panthers, Cody Chapman was best. VFL star Issac Conway made his return to football with the Panthers after a knee reconstruction. The Bloods have three home and three away games in the run home, which Tymms said would be tough. “It’s pretty even this year,” he said. “We’re only a game or two off top. Any team can beat anyone.” The run home will starts against Sebastopol up in Ballarat. The two teams are equal on points. “It’s a big game for us,” Tymms said. “We play them again in another four weeks. We want to get one against them.” In other results, Bacchus Marsh returned to the winners’ list by beating Lake Wendouree 11.13 (79)-7.12 (54). The Cobras got off to a flier and led by 21 points at quarter-time, with the margin staying around that for the rest of the day. Jake Owen kicked four goals for the Cobras, with Nick Stuhldreier named their best. The Cobras are a game outside the top six. Darley remains in second despite losing to East Point in the top-of-the-table clash. Darley led at the three breaks, but wasn’t able to hold off East Point, which won 15.9 (99)-11.11 (77). Shane Page was named the Devils’ best in the loss. Sebastopol and North Ballarat City were the other winners.

Strikers fall to another defeat Westside Strikers’ tough run has continued in FFV state league 4 west soccer. Having lost their past three games heavily, the Strikers were looking to bounce back against North Melbourne Athletic on Saturday. With both sides around the middle of the table, the Strikers were aiming to increase the gap on their opponents. Instead, the Strikers suffered a 4-0 loss, slipping to sixth and with the gap to the top four teams growing. One side looking to overtake the Strikers, Spring Hills, returned to the winners list against Bell Park. Having lost their past six matches, the 3-0 win is a confidence booster for the players. Rocky Calfapietra, Rhys Main and Daniel Salic were the goal scorers for the Stallions. The win, the Stallions’ fourth of the season, brings them up to 14 points. They are eighth on the ladder. In state league 5 west, Melton Phoenix had a 3-3 draw with Balmoral. The Phoenix, who played the final 10 minutes with 10 men, left it late to get the points. Robert Bebenek scored the Phoenix’s third goal in the third minute of injury time. Sergio Tapia and Jason Moody were the other goal scorers. Phoenix moves up to seventh thanks to the one point. In state league 1 north-west, Caroline Springs George Cross won 2-0 against FC Clifton Hill. Melton’s Ryan Davis breaks out of the pack on his way to kicking a goal. (Mark Wilson)

Milestone for the pride of Melton By Tara Murray Melton Football Netball Club will celebrate the club’s 140th anniversary in style. In a massive milestone, the club will host a dinner on Saturday, July 20, with past players from across Australia in attendance. Mick Williams, who has been involved with the club for more than 50 years, said the night would be a big one in the club’s history, with the highs and lows of the past to be discussed and teams of the decades to be named. “The club has stood up well over the years and we’ve made sure that we represent the club well,” Williams said. “If you didn’t play for Melton in the 1970s, you were no one. “Our forbearers have set the standard and we’ve maintained that.” The Bloods were formed in 1879, with records showing they played in the Bacchus Marsh Football League from at least the early 1900s. The club started in Melton South and called the Melton Recreation Reserve home for many years, before moving to Bacchus Marsh in 1976. It captured seven straight premierships between 1913 and 1919 and all up 12 senior premierships between 1913 and when the Bacchus Marsh Football League folded in 1972. The club moved to the Riddell District Football League. “The Bacchus Marsh league folded and we had nowhere to go,” Williams said. “On the death knock … at the last minute, we got the nod to go to the Riddell league.” The club won five senior premierships in the

RDFL before moving to the Ballarat Football League in 1997. Since then, it’s won another three premierships and played in last year’s grand final. “Last year we were runners-up in the grand final and 99 per cent of the committee and players were locals,” Williams said. Williams, after who the club’s senior football best and fairest is named, said family connections were important at the club, with many of former players well known in the town.
“You will find a lot of the names of the town streets are named after players,” he said. “We’ve had more than a fair share of involvement in the town.” Having started with one side, the club currently has three senior teams, juniors and netball – and this year added a women’s football side. In 1973, when the club had too many players, it formed a second club – cross-town rival Melton South. Melton has had several VFL/AFL players play for it, including current Greater Western
Sydney player Adam Kennedy and former Western Bulldogs captain Mark Hunter. Williams said anyone who was interested in attending the event would be welcomed. Players from as far back as the 1960s will be among those attending. They club is interested in tracking down club memorabilia. It has a shield from 1912 with gold leaves on it and photos of early premiership sides. Details: Mick on 0418 537 317 or Brian on 0418 536 489.
