Magic comes to Melton Get ready for a whole new world of entertainment, when Melton Christian College stages its production of Aladdin Jnr this month. Following in the footsteps of the iconic 1992 film, and the hugely successful Broadway musical, Aladdin Jnr has been adapted for high school-aged performers, and features all the classics that fans will remember. The college’s musical will feature a cast of 30 students, telling the story of lovable rogue Aladdin, Princess Jasmine, and the fast-talking, wisecracking Genie as they discover mystical caves, take magic carpet rides, and outwit the evil sorcerer, Jafar. Director Derek Bendall said: “It is amazing how far we have come in the last decade, with the quality of performance and stage crafts,” Mr Bendall said. “From our humble beginnings with a set piece that was a piece of canvas, to digital projected scenes. Similarly the quality of the singing, acting and dancing is incomparable to the early years. “I love finding the diamonds in the rough. Helping them to reach their full potential is exactly what I love doing.” The show will be at the college from July 26-28, with tickets available at ticketebo.com.au/meltonchristiancollege Ewen McRae Jorda as Aladdin, Faith as Jasmine and Matthew as Genie.(Marco De Luca)
Carparking rise rejected By Ewen McRae Melton and Caroline Springs town centres will not receive additional carparking after a Melton council report declared current provisions adequate. The officers’ report, which followed a notice of motion from Cr Sophie Ramsey in March, explored the possible need for multi-storey carparks in the two town centres because of increased usage and demand. It found Melton town centre had 2134 public carparks and Caroline Springs town square had 1114.

A council survey of parking in Melton found that the peak occupancy rate of spaces was 66 per cent, while there was a higher demand for spaces with three to four-hour limits. Rather than multi-story carparking, the study instead recommended changes to time limits on existing spaces.
“The study concluded that there is sufficient parking within the Melton township as a whole to meet the current peak parking demands and that a multi-storey carpark is not necessarily the solution towards addressing the existing demand versus parking spaces for the medium-term parking gaps,” the officers’ report stated. “There is no evidence to suggest that a multi-storey carpark in the Melton township is required.” While there has been no carparking study done in Caroline Springs, the report stated that undertaking one would be premature due to $120

the state of flux in the area with several new developments ongoing. Cr Ramsey moved a motion at last week’s meeting that the council undertake a review of carparking requirements in Melton and Caroline Springs town centres as part of the High Street Structure Plan project, which is anticipated to start in mid-2020. “As we plan our wonderful city, with an additional 300,000 people coming in the not too distant future … we need to look strategically at multi-storey carparking in both areas,” she said. “Because it’s only going to get worse, not better.”

Growth suburbs feel price slump By Melissa Heagney/ Heagney/Domain Land prices in Melbourne’s growth belts have fallen over the March quarter, with pre-election jitters and tighter credit conditions taking their toll. Even though the more affordable regions on Melbourne’s outskirts have been in demand, median lot prices across seven key local government areas dropped by 2.7 per cent to a median of $325,000, according to Oliver Hume’s Quarterly Market Insights report. Melton experienced the fifth highest drop
in median lot prices, with a 1.7 per cent drop in the March quarter to a new median of $295,000. Nearby Wyndham fell by the same rate to a median of $325,000. Casey experienced the biggest drop in Melbourne, falling by 5.8 per cent in the March quarter. The fall followed the overall trend of Melbourne’s cooling market, where house price medians also dropped by 2.4 per cent in the first three months of this year. Developers have also been offering incentives such as low-cost builds in select areas or the
chance to buy with a small deposit amid the weak market. Oliver Hume national head of research George Bougias said it was taking longer for transactions to complete in the slowing housing market. But Melbourne’s growing population meant there was still demand for house and land packages. He said the average time on the market had jumped from record lows of 20 days early last year to an average of 90 days in the March quarter, bringing the days on the market back
to typical historical averages. He also said volumes of sales in the March quarter were the lowest since early 2013, but he expected the market to improve from here. “We consider sales volumes have probably now bottomed out and should gradually increase over the short-term as lending conditions continue to ease and buyer confidence improves,” he said. “The underlying strength of the Victorian economy and a growing population also provide reasons to be more positive about the future.”

“This year we decided to approach the general public – and the response has just been incredible. I’m still getting calls and it looks like the donations will continue to come in through the holidays. “A lot of people in Melton have an association with the community in some way, because we’ve been around for so long.” Ms Soderblom said the support from the community and local businesses would allow for much-needed upgrades at the kindergarten. “Some of the goods and services that have been donated will be part of future raffles and

Melton Uniting Kindergarten is experiencing a wave of community support as it finalises its annual fundraising drive. After reaching out to local businesses in term two, the kindergarten has received donations of money, goods and services valued at more than $4000. Fundraising committee member Elise Soderblom said the response from the community had been overwhelming. “Every year we do general fundraising … things like raffles, silent auctions or chocolate drives,” Ms Soderblom said.
A broad capital works program is the centrepiece of Melton council’s 2019-20 budget. The budget was passed at last week’s meeting, following a period of community consultation and submissions. The budget includes more than $66 million in capital works, and is projecting an underlying surplus of $2.3 million. Melton mayor Bob Turner said the budget was all about delivering for community needs. “This budget demonstrates council’s commitment to delivering on our key priorities, and providing high quality programs, services and infrastructure to our residents,” Cr Turner said. “I’d like to extend my personal thanks to all the residents and community groups who shared their ideas and visions for the city during the budget engagement sessions. “Your insight has been invaluable and has enabled us to prepare a budget that is not only fair and equitable, but also strives to achieve the timely delivery of infrastructure programs and services for our community.” Significant projects across the next 12 months include completion of the Aintree Children’s and Community Centre ($1.35 million), design of the Eynesbury Station Early Learning Centre ($1.2 million), intersection works at Taylors Road/Westwood Drive ($2.5 million), Macpherson Park redevelopment stages 1-3 ($4.25 million) and Cobblebank Indoor Stadium construction stage 1 ($3 million).

Leaders thrive on camp Young leaders from across Victoria will descend on Elaine this week, as part of a camp designed to build networks and inspire. The camp, run by Youthrive Victoria, is delivered twice a year to help build on existing leadership skills and help grow leaders across rural Victoria. The program has had more than 350 alumni in recent years, including Bacchus Marsh’s Kitty Robinson who is returning this year as a mentor. Ms Robinson said the camp had been important for her at a crucial time of her life. “This program really helped me develop a healthy life perspective at a tough time of transition from school to university,” Ms Robinson said.

Design win for Melton South playground

New youth centre opens By Ewen McRae Melton’s South Sudanese community will continue to receive strong support, following the opening of a new office for the Centre for Multicultural Youth last week. The CMY has helped facilitate a community support group for young local South Sudanese for the past year, and has received continued funding from the state government to help fund the office and its various programs. The support group aims to build strong futures for South Sudanese young people, fostering a sense of purpose and belonging
and breaking down barriers to education, employment and community connection. They do this through sport and recreational activities, youth mentoring, parenting and family support and youth outreach. Youth Minister Gabrielle Williams was on hand for the ribbon cutting at the new offices, which were made possible from a $6 million package in the state budget to support young people from African and Pasifika backgrounds. She said it was a fantastic initiative for the community and one which had shown positive results. “We’re helping South Sudanese Victorians to reach their full potential, with
community-led responses that ensure young people can see a pathway to a positive future,” Ms Williams said. “Homework clubs, sporting programs, help with jobs, managing money, getting housing and staying healthy – sometimes a small intervention can keep a young person on track.” Local member Steve McGhie said it was important for the local community to continue to provide opportunities for its young people. “It’s great to see our vibrant local community getting a hand to look after our young people and provide the sort of support that will help them play a positive role,” Mr McGhie said.
A Melton South playground has been recognised as one of the best in the state. Atherstone Adventure Park on Bridge Road, Melton South, won the play spaces landscape architectural award at the Victorian Institute of Landscape Architects awards event earlier this month, beating out competition from across Victoria. The park, which features swings, slides, climbing spaces and open play areas, was highly commended by the jury of industry professionals. The judging panel commended the designing architects, ASPECT Studios, for their flair and imagination. “Bridge Road Regional Playspace is a fun and engaging public space, which incorporates a wonderful array of spatial diversity for children of all ages and abilities,” the judges said. “The jury particularly enjoyed the use of topographical variation to create opportunities for nature play and utilising the underside of the bridge as a climbing area. “The use of artificial and natural materials is also well integrated and visually interesting, creating a unified and satisfying design result.” Each park that was entered in the awards was evaluated for design excellence, innovation, context engagement and social and environmental impact. Council amalgamation rejected By Ewen McRae The state government has quashed any suggestion the Shire of Moorabool could be amalgamated. Moorabool mayor Paul Tatchell last month put council amalgamations on the agenda following a Regional Development Victoria report that showed Moorabool was being shortchanged. The report indicated Moorabool had received just $15 per person in total grants from RDV’s Regional Jobs and Infrastructure Fund since
2007-08, when the fund was established, while nearby Ballarat received $820 per person from the same fund. “We’re going to put out a budget this year where 86.7 cents in the rate dollar is going to capital works,” Cr Tatchell said last month. “I’d nearly guarantee that Moorabool is the highest in the state for that, yet we have the lowest grant funding and the highest growth. “If we don’t get a handle on it, we’ll certainly be talking to and trying to get the government to engage on ‘do you want us to amalgamate?’ Because if that is what they want, let’s plan for
it.” But Local Government Minister Adem Somyurek said the state government had no plans for amalgamation. “We’re committed to helping councils become more efficient and sustainable by empowering them to work together to lower operational costs and deliver more efficient services,” Mr Somyurek said. “Council amalgamations are not on the government’s agenda.” Municipal Association of Victoria president Coral Ross said the state government should be
doing more. “Rural shires have a unique set of challenges with large geographic areas, long road lengths to maintain and a greater reliance on revenue from other levels of government,” Cr Ross said. “Moorabool Shire is also experiencing a high rate of growth. “We remain disappointed that the state’s upcoming rates review will not tackle the overall revenue needed to ensure all councils are financially sustainable and can meet the increasing infrastructure and service provision demands as our population continues to grow.”
Menu is on the money The classes are run by volunteers, who decide which recipe they will present, with the cost of each one coming in under $20. Ms Farrugia said there was a strong need for such classes. “We usually get 40 to 50 at the soup kitchen, so there’s demand for this sort of thing,” she said. “The idea of running the cooking classes is to give us a bigger reach and to help more people. It’s a very social night, which is very important – just sharing a meal and cooking is great for everyone.” The next class will take place on Saturday, July 6, with future events on the first and third Saturdays of the month. Anyone interested in getting involved can visit facebook.com/soupkitchenmelton or simply attend on the night. Melton cooking classes are making budgets go further. (Supplied)

Cooking classes in Melton to help those facing food insecurity are winning strong early support. Part of the ongoing soup kitchen at Melton Senior’s Community and Learning Centre, the cooking classes show how to prepare meals on a tight budget. Organiser Kylie Farrugia said the classes were a welcome addition to the soup kitchen. “It was previously just bread and soup that was available, but thanks to the funding of council we’ve been able to open it up to have the opportunity for meals and also these classes every second week,” Ms Farrugia said. “After talking to a lot of people in the community, we realised that there were a lot of people suffering food insecurity and people are wanting to learn more about what they can do … how to make their budget stretch a bit further. We had about 15 people at our first class and we’re hoping to grow that.”

Call for more social housing By Ewen McRae Melton will require a dramatic increase in social housing, according to a new report. A study from the Australian Housing and Urban Research Institute (AHURI) has dramatically increased projections of social housing needed in Victoria over the next 20 years. The AHURI report forecasts that by 2036, there will be a need for an additional 127,500 public or community housing properties in Greater Melbourne, and a further 38,500
properties in the rest of the state. The report also said Victoria has the lowest proportion of public and community housing as a percentage of all housing stock at only 3.4 per cent, compared to the national average of 4.4 per cent. The Melton and Brimbank region already has the fifth highest number of applications for social housing in the state, with 3222 applications lodged up until March this year. Of those, almost half (1491) are considered priority cases, with each application representing a home, not the number of people
that require social housing. The Victorian government has committed to build an additional 1000 public housing properties over the next four years, however executive officer of the Victorian Public Tenants Association, Mark Feenane, said more needs to be done. “Enough is enough. Homelessness figures in Victoria are skyrocketing and our public housing stock is dwindling,” Mr Feenane said. “Governments have a financial and moral obligation to ensure affordable and accessible housing is available, and sufficient to meet community need.
“The findings released today are a stark reminder of the urgent need to do more to address the real, urgent and growing need for housing for Victorians.” Melton council families and children manager, Brendan Ball, said they would continue to push the state government for increases in social housing to keep up with community needs. “Council continues to advocate to the state government and community housing providers to explore opportunities to increase the social housing supply in the City of Melton,” he said.
Pre-school turning point Diggers Rest Pre-School is reaching the next stage of its redevelopment, with a major upgrade set to be completed by January. A sod turning ceremony last week marked the beginning of the next stage of the $1.3 million upgrade that will enable an additional 66 places to be offered. Melton mayor Bob Turner said it was a significant day for the pre-school. “We are committed to helping young people get the best start by creating more kindergarten places, particularly as the young population grows,” Cr Turner said. “Extra kinder places will mean more early learning opportunities for the growing number of three and four year olds living in Diggers Rest. “The City of Melton is one of Australia’s youngest and fastest-growing areas … about seven per cent of the Diggers Rest population is under four years old.
“Projects like this are critical to ensuring our youngest residents have a space to learn, thrive and prepare for school.” The extension will deliver a new kindergarten room, staff offices, amenities and external play space that will help meet growing demand for early years services in the Diggers Rest area. The project is being funded by a $350,000 grant from the state government and a $979,000 contribution from council. Local MP Josh Bull said it was an important project for the local community. “Diggers Rest is not just a fantastic community, but a growing community,” Mr Bull said. “The formative years for our young people are so critically important to their lives … so thank you to all the partners in this important project.” Ewen McRae

Jail sentence for home invader By Ewen McRae A man who invaded a Kurunjang house armed with a sledgehammer and a rifle last year has been sentenced to 20 months imprisonment and a two year community corrections order. Shane O’Brien was sentenced in the County Court last month in relation to an incident on July 7, 2018. The court heard O’Brien and two unknown co-offenders had been drinking at his house, when they drove to a Kurunjang property about 10pm.
One of the unknown men stayed in the car, while O’Brien and the other man approached the house. O’Brien was carrying a large sledgehammer, while the unknown offender had a .22 calibre rifle. Two occupants of the house, a man and a woman, told the court they heard a noise at the front door and when they investigated they found O’Brien bashing the security door with the sledgehammer. The occupants told them they had the wrong house, but O’Brien continued to bash the door, bending it inwards. He then broke a window
with the hammer and the two men entered the house and asked the woman for ‘ice and cash’. The man with the rifle then tried to steal a motorbike from the premises, but fled the property when the woman’s boyfriend arrived. Shortly following the incident, the female victim observed O’Brien in a nearby park, and police found him disposing of the rifle and sledgehammer in nearby properties. While he initially denied the offending, O’Brien later pled guilty to a number of charges, including trespassing with intent to cause an offence, unlawful assault, and firearms charges.
In sentencing, Judge James Parrish said while alcohol was a mitigating factor, the seriousness of the offence necessitated a prison sentence. “I do consider that your offending on the night of 7 July 2018 is ‘serious’,” Judge Parrish said. “Although I accept that alcohol erred your decision-making processes on that night, alcohol is no defence or excuse for such offending.” O’Brien has served nearly nine months of his 20 month sentence in pre-sentence detention, and will have a two year community correction order begin immediately after he is released.
Textiles that tell a story The Melton and Caroline Springs libraries will come alive with colour in the coming weeks, after the unveiling of a major textile exhibition. The Home exhibition, launched on June 28, will feature the work of 14 skilled textile artists depicting where they have come from and various interpretations of what home means to them. From a portrait ‘painted’ with wool to installations spilling across the floor, the artists have weaved, crocheted and embroidered their stories. Melton mayor Bob Turner said the Home exhibition would be an exclusive first look at some striking pieces. “This is an impressive showcase of some never before seen textile artworks which I’m sure will attract many visitors,” Cr Turner said. “One of the special things about this exhibition is that it can speak to us all. The artworks celebrate belonging, urban life,
family, community and everything in between. “To imagine and create these fascinating and intricate works is a huge credit to the talent and patience of the artists.” The Home exhibition is the result of a two-year cultural development program, Home Sewn: Makers of Melton supported by the Victorian government through Creative Victoria. It brings together a range of contemporary and traditional textile art technique. Visitors will see skillfully crafted three-dimensional installations alongside equally impressive traditional wall hanging artworks. The exhibiting artists are all from the west and many took part in artist-in-residence workshops. The free exhibition will run at both libraries until August 11. Ewen McRae

2 July 2019 Melton City Council Community News
Celebrate NAIDOC Week
Mayor’s Message
Cr Bob Turner Last week, Council adopted its 2019/2020 Budget, demonstrating our continued commitment to delivering high quality programs, services and infrastructure to our residents, now and into the future. This financial year, we’ll be investing in infrastructure projects totalling $62.4 million; including roads ($19.2 million); buildings ($18.78 million); recreational, leisure and community facilities ($15.45 million); footpaths and cycle-ways ($1.09 million); and street lighting improvement ($154,000).
A wood burning workshop and a tour of Melton Botanic Garden are among the FREE events on offer in the City of Melton as part of NAIDOC Week. The annual celebration of Indigenous culture, achievement and history is an opportunity to learn something new and support our local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community. In a special men’s workshop, artist Mick Harding will teach participants wood burning techniques. Come along to KIRRIP House on Monday, 8 July to learn this traditional craft from an expert in symbolism, culture and fine arts. Garden lovers, green thumbs and even foodies will enjoy next Friday’s event – a walking tour of Melton Botanic Garden. Your guides will show you plants indigenous to the Melton region and other Aboriginal-use plants including bush tucker plants. You will see Ryans Creek, the Indigenous Peoples Garden, Victorian Volcanic Plains Garden, the Bushfoods Garden and more. There will also be a flag raising of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags at Melton Community Hall next Wednesday. All listed events are FREE. Significant capital projects include completion of Aintree Children’s and Community Centre; design of Eynesbury Station Learning Centre; extension of the Diggers Rest Preschool; signalisation of intersections at Taylors Road and Westwood Drive, Caroline Springs Boulevard and Rockbank Middle Road, and Ferris Road and Hollingsworth Drive; and
construction of playgrounds at Arbour Boulevard Reserve, Bloomsbury Drive Reserve and Morton Homestead. Recreational projects include design and construction of stages 1 and 2 of Eynesbury Recreation Reserve, stages 1-3 Macpherson Park redevelopment, and stage 1 of Cobblebank Indoor Stadium; replacement of Kurunjang Tennis Courts; and completion of City Vista Sports Pavilion and fields. I’d like to thank the residents and community groups who shared their ideas during the budget engagement process, and everyone who put forward a Section 223 Committee submission. Your insight enabled us to prepare a budget that strives to deliver infrastructure, programs and services for our community. To arrange a meeting, phone Barbara McKenzie on 9747 7200, or contact me directly on 0412 584 224 or at bob.turner@melton.vic.gov.au
Watts Ward
Cr Michelle Mendes Roads, buildings and recreation infrastructure, along with quality services and programs, dominated the 2019/2020 Budget, adopted by Council last month. Some great projects are set to be delivered across the municipality, like the design and construction of stages 1—3 of the MacPherson Park redevelopment; the construction of playgrounds at Bloomsbury Drive Reserve and Morton Homestead; and the extension of the Diggers Rest Kindergarten. All these projects are being undertaken in Watts Ward, and I for one am excited to see the community come together and enjoy these great facilities. Last week, Council marked the commencement of works on the Diggers Rest kindergarten extension, which will deliver a new kindergarten room, offices, and external playspaces to the existing centre.
The extension has been designed to meet the needs of the growing number of three-year-old and four-year-old children living in Diggers Rest. With around seven per cent of the Diggers Rest population aged under four years, this project will go a long way to ensuring local families have access to quality child care and educational services. And finally, if you’re looking for something interesting to do this week, I’d highly recommend popping into CS Gallery and taking a look at the outstanding Home exhibition—an impressive showcase of some never before seen textile artworks created by local artists. For more information visit melton.vic.gov.au/artsprograms Please feel free to contact me about Watts Ward or Council related issues on 0437 249 824 or at: michelle.mendes@melton.vic.gov.au

In a popular part of town, this is a well-presented property with all the expected elements of a modern build. The house is on a block of about 520 square metres which provides good-sized back and side yards with loads of beautification promise. There are three spacious, grey-carpeted bedrooms, two with built-in robes and the street-facing main with walk-in robe and en suite. Each bedroom also comes with a ceiling fan, perfect for summertime comfort. The expansive tiled living hub, with sheers on windows, incorporates the kitchen. This has a mid-grey lower cabinetry and good bench space, as well as an underbench oven, gas cooktop and new dishwasher and canopy rangehood. Newly installed ducted heating and evaporative cooling takes care of year-round temperature control. A large timber deck out back provides a spot to set up a barbecue, while a future pergola for more shelter could be considered. Like the rest of yard space, it’s all up to imagination. The property also has a double garage with internal access, and two schools are within a kilometre.

Sharks swim to victory By Lance Jenkinson Hillside claimed bragging rights over local rival Taylors Lakes in Essendon District Football League division 1 at rain-drenched Hillside Reserve on Saturday. The Sharks were at their stifling best in the 54-point win, keeping the Lions to three goals. In attack, Hillside kicked a winning score in the wet. The Sharks finished with 11 goals, including an exhilarating six-goal final term when ground conditions were at their worst. Raafat Rachrache was the main source of goals for Hillside with four majors. Rachrache is the team’s second leading goalkicker for the season with 18 goals. Matthew Patane, Hillside’s leading goal kicker, added three to take his season tally to 22. Victor Micallef, Bevan Newell and Lachlan Rayner were the other stand-outs for Hillside. For Taylors Lakes, there were only single goalkickers on a tough afternoon at the office. While Hillside is in the finals mix, the Lions are way down in third last with just two wins from 10 games and under threat of relegation. Hillside will continue its finals push when it hits the road to play second-placed East Keilor at Overland Reserve on Saturday, while Taylors Lakes will be aiming to cause an upset when it hosts top-of-the-ladder Tullamarine at Lionheart Reserve. In premier division, Keilor secured a 71-point win over Glenroy to move to 10-0 for the season. In division 2, Burnside Heights was pipped by 11 points at home to Moonee Valley in a top three clash.
SPORT
Lakers put a stop to Storm’s streak Caroline Springs ended Manor Lakes’ winning run in the Western Region Football League Women’s competition. The Storm were undefeated since the introduction of the competition last year, but that mattered for little on Sunday. The Lakers, who also entered the match undefeated this season, came away with the points in a thriller. It’s the first time the teams have played each other since last year’s grand final. The Lakers kicked the only goal of the final quarter, to win 2.6 (18)-2.5 (17). Anthea Stathakis, in her second game for the season, kicked both the Lakers’ goals. Jasmine Raffaele and Krystyn Raymundo were the Lakers’ best in the win. The win leaves the Lakers sitting atop the ladder with a 9-0 record. Spotswood and Manor Lakes aren’t far behind, with both sides having one loss each. The Lakers this week face bottom side Wyndhamvale on Sunday. The Falcons will be hoping for their first win of the season. It was a tougher weekend for the Lakers men’s side in division 1. Playing reigning premiers Deer Park in wet conditions, the Lakers lost 6.17 (53)-1.8 (14). Stephen Brewer was best for the Lakers. This week they face Point Cook away. Tara Murray

SPORT Winning weekend keeps Thoroughbreds in the race Melton Thoroughbreds have kept their finals hopes alive with two crucial wins in Big V men’s division 2 basketball. With virtually every match a mini-final for the Thoroughbreds on the run home, coming away with the points from both weekend matches was important. But Thoroughbreds coach Joe Hooks said that while the results were pleasing, focus would quickly turn to the next game – against Pakenham Warriors. “We have to win the rest of the games this season if we’re to have a run at the play-offs,” he said. “I don’t want the team to be satisfied with those two wins.” Hooks said the players had stepped up in
defence, making the Thoroughbreds different in an offence-first league. On Saturday night, the Thoroughbreds beat RMIT Redbacks 79-78 in a game Hooks said had everything. “I don’t even know how to describe it,” he said. “It went down to the last seconds and RMIT is a good team. Everyone was talking to each other and no one was backing down.” The Redbacks had their chances late to take the lead after the Thoroughbreds gave away a tech foul, but Melton held on. Hooks was thrilled by the job done on Stephen Coffey, the best point guard in the competition. Carl Davis got handed that role. Chris Johnson top scored for the Thoroughbreds with 26 points.
On Sunday, the Thoroughbreds backed it up against the Maccabi Warriors, winning 94-80. Hooks said they looked tired at the start of the game, but got going towards the end. “It was a really good sign for us,” he said. “We had a couple of players injured as well.” Hooks was full of praise for the work of Jackson Jones across the whole weekend. He said Jones, who is part of the club’s youth league side, had a spot in the senior team next year if he wanted it. The Thoroughbreds are seventh and three wins outside the top four. This week they will face the Pakenham Warriors and Camberwell Dragons. Hooks knows it will be another challenging weekend.
“Last time we played Camberwell, we pushed them all the way in overtime, so it will be a tough one,” he said. “Pakenham beat us at our place last time. It’s going to be tough and we’re going to be there to fight it out like usual.” The Thoroughbreds women’s side had a big 69-48 division 2 win against North East Bushrangers. The Thoroughbreds did most of the damage in the second half after leading by four points at half-time. Taylah Lea top scored with 21 points. The Thoroughbreds are seventh, one game outside the top four. Tara Murray

Injuries can’t stop Melton By Tara Murray Melton Phoenix pulled off its best win of the FFV state league 5 west season in testing conditions on Saturday. The two teams were faced with horrible weather conditions playing under lights. Throw in a number of injuries to key players, and the Phoenix put in a brave performance in the 2-1 win. Phoenix coach Mark Parnis was super proud of how his side fought on. “It was a massive day for us,” he said. “Our reserves did an amazing job and got the result as well. We had five guys get injured and another five players out. “It was fantastic for everyone involved.” The Phoenix’s injury concerns started in the reserves when their goalkeeper went off. Then their senior goalkeeper Connor Krizmanic was injured in the warm up. Striker Jason Hill stepped into the keeper’s 18 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ JULY 2, 2019
role, with 15-year-old Mason Parnis moved to the bench. Parnis said their bad luck didn’t end there. “They cracked a goal early on,” he said. “Michael Kapiris, our main striker, got injured and threw a spanner in the works. “Jason Moody got a nice free kick and at that stage we were 1-1 and thinking we were a chance. “Then our striker [Hill] in goals hurt himself.” It meant Parnis junior had to take to the field for his senior debut. He was able to keep a clean sheet. Moody also joined the injury list, but despite this the Phoenix hit the front through Sergio Tapia. When Zac Busuttil went down in a rough tackle, it left Melton with 10 men on the field for the last 10 minutes. “We were able to hold on and the boys were pretty desperate. It was fantastic,” Parnis said.
Parnis said they would assess the injuries at training on Tuesday night and he hoped a couple of players would return to boost the side. The Phoenix this week face Balmoral and Parnis said with their injury crisis, they were realistic about the rest of their season. “The aim is to finish as high as possible,” he said. “Any move up the ladder now is a bonus. “The goal is to build a better future for the club.” In state league 4 west, Spring Hills lost to Melbourne City 2-1. Westside Strikers had a 4-0 loss to Melbourne University. The Strikers sit fifth, while Spring Hills has slipped to ninth. In state league 1 north-west, Sunshine George Cross got a rare win, beating Sydenham Park 1-0. The win is the Georgies third win of the season and means the side moves above Clifton Hill.
Rockbank Football Sporting Club will celebrate in style as the club marks its 100th anniversary on July 20. The club will welcome former players, supporters and committee members as the Rams take on Lancefield in football and netball at Welsh Group Oval. Rams president Mark Smith said it was a special day for the club. “We’re reaching out to a lot of past players to come,” he said. “We’re going to recognise past players and will name some new life members. “We’ll also be reading out the team of the century and having a new life members and honour board.” The club is producing a book on the history of the club, with former president Brian Kirk and football operations manager Gavin Sporle putting in a lot of work behind the scenes. The milestone caps off an up-and-down 100 years for the club. While it had teams before the 1919 season, the club has decided to recognise the 100th anniversary from when it joined the Bacchus Marsh Football League. Smith said there were a lot of names in the club’s history that members of the local community would recognise. “The Melton football clubs shared a lot of players, a lot of players with famous names in the town,” he said. The club’s best period was in the 1960s when it won six premierships, beating the likes of Darley, Melton and Maddingley. The club disbanded at the end of the 1971 season before reforming in 1992 to play in the Western Region Football League. It later joined the Riddell District Football League, where it remains. The anniversary function will start at lunch and continue on through the afternoon. The cost of $25 includes a meal. Devils fire in the rain to record a big win over Redan The wet weather and Redan proved no match for Darley on Saturday in the Ballarat Football League. In pouring rain, it was the Devils that adjusted to the conditions better with Redan, the top side, left shocked. The Devils had a massive 21 scoring shots in the tough conditions, on their way to a 10.11 (71)-4.4 (28) win. Devils coach Heath Scotland said it was the best football that they’ve played in a while. “It was more about the process and we got it right for four quarters,” he said. “It was a more even performance with 22 players playing their role. “It’s the strongest performance we have put out in a while.” Scotland said one of the most pleasing things was their ability to restrict the Lions’ scoring ability. “Restricting the highest scoring team of the competition to 28 points and still being able to score was really good. “Our backline as a collective restricted them
to 26-27 inside 50s. “It was one of those games that everything clicked.” Jake Edwards kicked four goals for the Devils, with Scotland saying he was in really good form. While it was a team performance from the Devils, there was one standout. “Nick Graham was a class above and he made a huge difference in the game. “You can tell someone who is coming back from the AFL. He and his brother [Brian Graham] in the middle were standouts.” The win moves the Devils to second on the ladder, percentage behind new ladder leaders East Point. The two sides face each other this week. Scotland said this game is the third in a block of games they targeted. They are 2-0 in the first two of those games. “We knew it would be challenging,” he said. “The target was to win two of those three matches and now hopefully three from three would be great.
“It’s put a gap between us and fourth.” Scotland said the aim for the side for the second half of the season was to add a bit more consistency to the team. He said they were starting to have senior players return to the side which would help. “We’re still unsettled and we haven’t played our best football,” he said. “If we stay consistent we have shown we can beat good teams. But our worst is with the bottom sides.” In other results, it was a tough weekend for Melton, Melton South and Bacchus Marsh. Melton lost to Ballarat 5.9 (39)-3.6 (24), with the Bloods kicking just one goal after quarter time. New ladder leaders East Point beat Bacchus Marsh 5.8 (38)-1.6 (12). North Ballarat City proved too strong for Melton South, winning 14.20 (104)-3.1 (19). Tara Murray Nick Graham was the clear standout on Saturday.(Shawn Smits)

Diggers Rest maintained its spot in the top six with a solid win against Lancefield. In wet and slippery conditions, the Burras beat Lancefield 35-20. The Burras broke the game open in the second quarter before getting the lead out to 15 goals at three-quarter time. The game was then called off due to the weather. Melton Centrals had a tough day out against Macedon, losing 49-23. Centrals were in the game in the first quarter before the Cats ran away with it. Rupertswood, Riddell and Wallan were the other winners.

Bacchus Marsh remains in the top six despite a loss to ladder leader East Point on Saturday. In horrible conditions, the Cobras lost 35-16, with the game called off at three-quarter time. The Cobras are sixth, percentage ahead of Melton South, which lost to North Ballarat City 30-12. Melton, which is a game back from the Cobras, lost to Ballarat 51-36 and Darley lost to Redan 54-36.

Centrals hold out hope By Tara Murray Melton Centrals finally got the scalp they were hunting in the Riddell District Football League. Needing to beat one of the top six to keep their finals hopes alive, Centrals knocked off Macedon on Saturday at Arnolds Creek Reserve. While the Centrals only hit the front in the final quarter, it was a strong performance throughout the 7.4 (46)-4.5 (29) win. Centrals coach Mathew Sproule said they had played some good football. Centrals kicked the last five goals of the game. “We played much better,” he said. “We played really well for four quarters. We shouldn’t have been behind at three quarter time. “They got a couple of goals from 50-metre penalties which wasn’t great. Three of their goals came from our mistakes.” Sproule said a four-quarter performance had been what they were lacking in recent weeks. Sproule said they stripped things back during the week with a focus on playing basic football.
“As a coaching group, we changed a couple of things and targeted a few players to make sure they didn’t have an impact. “The focus was on a couple of tasks and not over-thinking things.” One of those with a task put on them was key forward Dylan Weir. In conditions that don’t normally suit the forwards, Weir kicked four goals and was best on ground. “It was more about his work rate,” Sproule said of Weir. “When the ball hit the deck, it was about following it up. He threw his body around and was super and got a lot of respect. “To his credit he did everything that I asked.” Linton Hogan was another standout, while Kayne Wilson gets better every week. Sproule was also thrilled with the defence, which restricted the second placed Cats to four goals. Despite the upset win, Sproule was realistic about their position on the ladder. The win has them sitting in seventh, two games outside the top six.
“We will put it into perspective, they have some injures which gave us more of a chance,” he said. “I was happy to play four quarters and we should have done it earlier in the year. “It’s [finals] out of our control. You want to keep developing the team. “The top six it pretty handy. We just need to make sure it’s not a one off.” Centrals this week face Woodend-Hesket, whose finals hopes look dashed following a loss to Rupertswood. Diggers Rest moved to second on the ladder, with a 13.17 (95)-2.4 (16) win against Lancefield. A Burras win never looked in doubt, as they kept the Tigers goal-less in three quarters. Deven Costigan kicked four goals for the Burras, with ruckman Sean Egan named their best. The Burras now sit percentage behind ladder leaders Romsey. Just one game separates the top six. The other winners for the round were Rupertswood, Riddell and Wallan. Rockbank had the bye.
Melton Centrals have notched up a good win against Carisbrook. Scores were level at three-quarter time, after which Centrals kicked the only four goals of the final quarter to win 6.4 (40)-2.4 (16). Melton was also on the winners’ list, beating Lake Wendouree, 6.7 (43)-1.0 (6). Darley and Bacchus Marsh both lost.
NAB League
The Western Jets let slip an opportunity to get a win over local rivals the Calder Cannons on Sunday. In a low-scoring affair, the Cannons got their noses in front in the first half by kicking the only goal. They extended their lead throughout the second half, winning 6.7 (43)-2.9 (21). Cody Raak was the Jets’ best. The Jets are fourth on the ladder.
