Behind the Anzac spirit By Ewen McRae For some, Anzac Day is that one day a year to recognise the sacrifices of Australians in conflicts around the world. But for Caroline Springs RSL members Janet Davey and Veronica Hassing, it is part of an ongoing legacy. The women, both 83, have been selling Anzac pins at Burnside Shopping Centre for years, always greeting shoppers with smiles and friendly faces. For Ms Hassing, it’s a chance to remember

her father, James Fogarty, who fought in France during World War I. “I felt that I had to do something,” she said. “I think of my dad a lot – and I thought he would like me to do this. He didn’t speak about the war. I think the war made him very quiet, but he was a very loving man. “It means a lot to me to sell these pins each year and I’m grateful to all the people that went to the wars.” Ms Davey also has a familial connection to Anzac Day, with her brother, James Leiper, serving in New Guinea in World War II.

“My brother did so much for me, and I just thought this would help me pay back a bit,” Ms Davey said. “When James came back from the war, I was 10 and we were living in a one-bedroom miners shack with nine children – and he bought a house for my mother in Preston. “He looked after me like he was my dad from that point on … I don’t know where I would be without him and his service.” The two ladies team up for Anzac Day and Remembrance Day each year, selling pins and poppies.

“It’s especially good to sell these pins with Veronica,” Ms Davey said. “We have a bit of fun and a laugh … it’s good to get out to do this together. I think the importance of Anzac Day is growing, because if it wasn’t for those men and women going off to fight, where would Australia be?” For Caroline Springs RSL, the day itself will this year have added significance thanks to the unveiling of its new war memorial at Lake Caroline. Caroline Springs RSL will hold its dawn service at the new lakeside memorial from 6am on Thursday.

Melton council has highlighted roads and infrastructure as its main priorities for federal assistance ahead of next month’s federal election. With the nation going to the polls on May 18, Melton mayor Bob Turner said the growing municipality needed input from whichever party forms government to keep up with the demands of the community. “Our key priorities this federal election are all about securing the liveability our residents deserve now and in the future,” Cr Turner said. “Of critical importance are the Western Highway Upgrade, infrastructure funding to support growth and a new Melton hospital, as well as funding towards a new sports stadium at Cobblebank and certainty for permanent kinder funding. “Together, these projects would give City of Melton residents more time to spend with their families, improve their health outcomes, and open up more local jobs. “I’m asking the major parties to take notice of our city and its urgent, fast-growing need for essential infrastructure and services.” The council is also calling for the federal government to secure the additional five hours of kinder currently funded, and extend the Building Better Regions Fund to include outer interface council areas experiencing high growth.

Rockbank Football Club could be in for a major facelift, with the federal Labor Party pledging to upgrade the club’s outdated facilities if elected next month. As part of the pledge, the club, which has been pushing for upgrades to its facilities for more than six years, will receive $1.8 million to go towards upgrading the social rooms, kitchen, changerooms and ground lighting at Ian Cowie Reserve. The announcement came ahead of the May 18 election, with local MP Brendan O’Connor and opposition sports spokesman Don Farrell visiting the club last week. “Rockbank is one of the oldest towns in our region and as the Rams celebrate their 100th year in 2019, Labor’s investment will help the club to keep up with facilities at new clubs in the new suburbs springing up nearby,” Mr O’Connor said. New coaches boxes, a digital scoreboard and more spectator shelter are also on the cards as part of the planned upgrades. Club general manager Gavin Sporle said the announcement was a massive boost for the club, which has suffered some huge losses on the field to start the season. “We’ve put in a heck of a lot of work to get this funding,’ Mr Sporle said. “We’ve had some poor results recently on the field, but we’ve put a lot of work into our juniors to build that up. So an announcement like this allows us to attract the community to come down and get involved. “We’re 100 years old, but we’ve struggled to attract new players and investment to the club. The Rockbank area is growing, so an announcement like this will really help us build a successful sporting club moving forward.”

A 28-year-old Hillside man was among four men arrested in connection to thefts of copper wiring across the west in recent months. A new event aimed at inspiring local young people to follow their dreams is coming to Toolern Vale. The brainchild of local hip-hop artist Troy McFaul, who will run the event with fellow local musician Adolphus, the event aims to get young people motivated to aim high and get the most out of themselves. “We feel like something like this is missing in this area, and we really think there’s a need to boost how the youth think about themselves,” Mr McFaul said. “We want to see our young people stay out of trouble, follow their goals and dreams and go on the right pathway in life, and we feel if we can put this first speaking event on, and grow it, we can follow it up with some other youth

events.” The event will be aimed at children aged 10 to 16, and will cover topics such as bullying, perseverance and resilience. “I’ll cover bullying, because I was bullied all through school, so I’ll tell my story about overcoming hurdles in life and never giving up,” Mr McFaul said. “I’m a big believer in following your dreams no matter what. Traffic fix for shopping centre By Ewen McRae Melton council will construct a dedicated right-hand turning lane into the Taylors Hill Shopping Centre from Gourlay Road in response to safety concerns. The move follows a notice of motion from Cr Lara Carli, who said the current arrangements at the centre led to a number of near misses between pedestrians and traffic. The centre’s current entrance on Gourlay Road can only be accessed by south-bound traffic, so cars are known to perform U-turns at

the nearby Hume Drive intersection to access the centre. “The reason I put this motion through in the first place was because it is so dangerous at the intersection of Gourlay Road and Hume Drive at the moment, with cars doing U-turns there where it is also a school crossing,” Cr Carli said. “It’s quite dangerous there when cars are trying to get through, because the lights are going to change. “The majority of those cars that are banked up on Gourlay Road to turn right on to Hume

Drive don’t turn right but do a U-turn to get back into the shopping centre. “I’m worried that there’s going to be an accident there – it’s just a disaster waiting to happen.” Council officers investigated the current arrangements and recommended against constructing a dedicated right turn lane into the shopping centre, due in part to concerns about potential illegal right turns from the centre on to Gourlay Road. The officers also had concerns about the $190,353 price tag for the project.

Council planning and development manager Luke Shannon said it would be better to monitor the current situation and install bollards along the median strip to prevent illegal turns from or into the centre. “It’s acknowledged that some residents do have issues accessing the centre, however based on the assessment that’s been undertaken, the current arrangements are satisfactory,” he said. Council voted against the officer recommendations and instead called for the right-hand turn lane to be implemented.

Taking a walk for mum Whitney Robertson had noticed issues with her mum’s memory for some time, but it still came as a shock when she was diagnosed with younger onset Alzheimer’s last year, at the age of 59. The Melton West resident said spreading awareness had become a big focus for her following her mum’s diagnosis, so she will be taking part in the Dementia Australia Memory Walk on May 5. “We’d noticed some issues with her memory over a period of three or four years … eventually we convinced her to go to the doctor about it,” Ms Robertson said. “From there, I decided to look around to see what sort of support was out there for it and came across the Memory Walk. I thought it would be a good way to show mum some support from the people around her. “I guess there’s some stigma around dementia and we’re trying to break that. It’s not

just something that happens to old people and it’s something that more and more people are going to encounter.” Ms Robertson is hoping to add to the $1700 her team has so far raised towards the cause. While her mum’s diagnosis was a shock, Ms Robertson said her family was trying to remain positive. “It’s obviously affected my life, but as a family we’re trying to talk openly about it and face this together,” she said. “Mum can’t control that this has happened to her, so we just want to give her all the support that we can. “I’m lucky that I have my little girl … now we’re making sure that they get all the moments together and documenting it so she can know the relationship that my mum had with her.” Details: memorywalk.com.au Ewen McRae

Detour route Intersection closure

Melton’s Vivienne Bearne was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015 and she is now using her experience to support other women. For the past two years, Ms Bearne has worked as a peer support volunteer with breast care network Counterpart. “I know that I’m a light at the end of the tunnel because I’m so well, fit and healthy,” Ms Bearne said. “Now it’s my turn to give back. That’s why I volunteer here at Counterpart.” Counterpart connects, supports and informs women with cancer. The organisation is training more peer support volunteers in 2019, and Ms Bearne is encouraging women who have experienced breast or a gynaecological cancer to consider

applying. “I’d recommend it because it is a self-healing thing,” she said. Counterpart support services manager Dianna Hill said volunteers were crucial, particularly in outer suburban areas. “Many women find a cancer diagnosis to be an isolating time,” Ms Hill said. “This is especially true for women in rural, regional and outer-metropolitan areas.” Counterpart is recruiting volunteers who have had a diagnosis of breast or gynaecological cancer at least two years ago. Track revamp is on the way

By Ewen McRae Little in life has come easily for Melton couple Peter and Maura Hutchinson, but their love has always persevered. The pair celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on April 12, joining friends and family to look back on a life together that nearly never happened. Peter suffered a stroke when he was just four years old, spending three weeks in a coma and a further three months in hospital in recovery. Maura was born with cerebral palsy and had years of physical therapy to help her walk and talk.

When Peter met Maura in Armadale, he knew she was the woman for him. “I used to catch the bus over to her place to see her, and then I’d sleep at the bus station ’till the next morning to see her again,” Peter said. “Her family actually won Tattslotto and moved to Coolangatta – and I hitchhiked up there so I could see her.” They married in Ballina in 1969 and in 1970 welcomed their son, Tony, into the world. He was followed in 1974 by daughter Kim. The family settled in Melton in 1980 and expanded to include six grandchildren. Peter said they never let their disabilities get in the way of enjoying a fulfilling life. “It didn’t really make much difference to me – you just got on with it,” he said. “I worked everywhere and anywhere, and Maura would

look after the kids at home so it was pretty good.” Kim said life was pretty normal growing up, but she had been inspired by her parents as the years passed. “They were always there for us, no matter what,” she said. “To me it was just a normal family. Mum was home and dad was off at

work. But as I’ve got older I’ve appreciated them more because they’ve had to work harder than everyday people. “I always tell people that my parents are handicapped and I’m very proud of them and what they’ve done over their lives.” And the secret to five decades of marriage? “Just be happy,” Maura said.

Walkers and mountain bikers will soon be enjoying an improved Lerderderg Track, with upgrade work beginning recently. The track, which runs for 87 kilometres from Bacchus Marsh to Daylesford via Blackwood, is popular among hikers and bikers because of its rugged terrain, but had fallen into disrepair in recent years. The state government is funding the upgrade, which will include re-posting and repainting post tops. To distinctively brand the Lerderderg Track, post tops are gaining a sky blue stripe. The government is also building new bridges across two of the track’s more challenging wet areas. For much of its length, the Lerderderg Track follows the heritage-listed Lerderderg River, which falls steeply into a deep gorge. At the gorge-end, the river contains a rich repository of geological features of international significance. At the Daylesford end of the Lerderderg Track, upgrades have begun on signage at the new trailhead overlooking Lake Daylesford at the Bridport Street lookout. New maps have been produced, showing a variety of bike routes, as well as directions from the track to Bacchus Marsh train station. The upgrades are expected to be completed by spring. Ewen McRae

Organised picnics will be banned at Maddingley Park for a 12-month trial period from July 1. Bacchus Marsh Council decided this at its meeting last Thursday night after considering a report prepared by Shire Secretary, Mr Ian Morris.

Rockbank East residents are still considering plans to secede to the neighboring Shire of Keilor because they are angered at delays in being connected to mains water supply. They were further upset to discover that the contractor the Shire had tendered the work to has not worked on the project since the end of January.

A magistrate last week described the driving history of a Melton man facing charges relating to numerous driving offences as the worst she had ever seen. Carl Lowe, 35, of Melton pleaded guilty to 17 charges in the Melbourne Magistrates Court including driving while disqualified, drink-driving and theft of a motor vehicle offences which occurred in January.

Health care in Melton and Moorabool needs a multimillion-dollar funding injection to keep pace with population growth, the region’s top health manager says. Djerriwarrh Health Services chief executive Bruce Marshall said his organisation had prepared seven consecutive annual service plans for the state government and was frustrated that no strategic plan had emerged to address future health-care needs on two fronts.

Neighbourhood House Week

Want to meet new people and learn new skills close to home? Discover shared interests and create friendships at your local Neighbourhood House. Melton City Council is celebrating Neighbourhood House Week with a range of free activities between 6 May and 16 May. There are six Neighbourhood Houses across the City of Melton offering dozens of free, or low cost, activities for the local community, all year round. As part of Neighbourhood House Week, residents are encouraged to get in touch with their local Neighbourhood House and get involved in something new and exciting, such as meditation and mindfulness, learning to knit, yoga classes, sampling international food and a community lunch. Neighbourhood Houses help foster friendships, while giving residents opportunities to attend workshops to learn valuable skills and try new projects. Activities are open to everyone in the community, and aim to help people learn and grow. Bookings for the activities are essential. Cr Bob Turner On Anzac Day, our community comes together to remember the sacrifice of the many thousands of young Australian men and women of our armed services who have given so much that we may live in peace.

A new Sons of the West program starts next month and I encourage men of all ages to sign up for this excellent annual event which is run n partnership with the Western Bulldogs Football Club.

I strongly believe that our community today can only benefit from better understanding the courage, duty, commitment and loyalty shown by the ANZACs and returned soldiers throughout Australia’s history.

The 10 week program aims to improve men’s mental and physical health and wellbeing and is completely free. Previous Sons of the West participants have really ‘kicked goals’ in their journey to wellbeing with some inspiring stories as a result of taking part in the program.

Therefore, I encourage residents to attend one of Council’s dawn services at Melton or Caroline Springs to honour not only the brave young soldiers of World War One, but everyone who has served their country so valiantly since then. Both services start at 6am at the Cenotaph on High Street, Melton, and the War Memorial on Lake Street, Caroline Springs.

Afternoon and evening sessions will be weekly in Melton West and Taylors Hill, focusing on fitness, nutrition and reducing stress. Cambridge Ward

Cr Steve Abboushi I’m pleased to share the news that City of Melton residents will soon be able to get their sneakers on and check out the new extension to the Caroline Springs Leisure Centre. The extension features two new indoor high ball courts, 12 tennis courts, three external basketball rings and a competition-sized external netball court, new change rooms, a commercial kitchen and a large community room space. It really is an impressive addition, making the centre one of the best sporting facilities in Melbourne, and it was a delight to tour the centre which will be fully open to the public in the next few weeks. I’d like to thank the State Government and Tennis Australia for their support of this $12 million development. These partnerships with Council are vital to the success of a number of local infrastructure projects.

Almost half a million girls and women play football across Australia, so it makes sense that female-friendly change rooms should be available in our local sporting clubs. That’s why Council is committed to refurbishing existing facilities that are currently non-compliant for female participation in sport. The 2019/20 draft budget includes upgrades to the Ian Cowie Pavilion and the Burnside Heights Recreation Reserve Pavilion to improve change room infrastructure that caters for all participants. SPORT Melton Centrals coach thrilled with numbers gain It’s back to the future for Melton Centrals, with Ray Martin again taking on the coaching role at the AFL Goldfields Women’s club. Having coached the side for three years, including its inaugural season, Martin remained involved around the club even after he stopped coaching. When asked whether he was interested in coaching the side again this year, he jumped at the opportunity. He said a lot had changed since last time he coached. “I loved it back in those days, but you would only get four or five people at training, so you couldn’t do much,” he said. “The first time we had a full team in 2007 was in the grand final. “Now we’re getting 21 at training. It’s really exciting. “The girls are keen and we’ve got some youth coming through.

“There’s plenty of mothers getting involved, too.” Martin said the club had 28 players on its list, including about 10 new faces – but more were welcome.

“We held a practice match and there was some players pulling out, so I thought we would have about 14 or 15,” he said. “We ended up having 21 players. It’s really good. “We start training at 6.30 every night, but everyone is getting there early to work on their skills.” Martin said the vibe at the club had been good with the players enjoying learning to work together. He said there was a number of mums in the side, with their children coming down to training as well, which made them feel more included. Martin said he was excited about what the Centrals could achieve this season. “We have a lot of new girls in the side,” he said. “It’s more about teaching them a little bit more. With so many good numbers in the team, it helps the newer players. Watching the

practice match, we put plans in place and they were executed.” Centrals finished their pre-season on a high in the form of a big win against Bacchus Marsh in their second practice match. Centrals start their season this weekend on the road against Lake Wendouree. The competition will again be one division with 10 teams. Centrals will have a cross-town rivalry, with Melton fielding a senior women’s team for the first time. Martin said it was encouraging to see that there was another team in Melton and it was a match to which his players looking forward. In other first-round matches, Bacchus Marsh will host Darley in a derby, while Melton will make its debut against Gisborne Tara Murray.

Cobras looking to gel By Tara Murray It’s going to take some time for Bacchus Marsh to settle into this year’s Ballarat Netball League season. With only two players returning from last season, when the Cobras returned to finals after a number of years, it will be a new-look youthful side taking to the court this season. Cobras’ coach Michael Saker said he is confident in what the side could do, but he knows it will take some time. “There’s only two players from last year’s team still at the club,” he said. “We’ve recruited a few players and brought some players up from under-19s. “I don’t think we’ve lost anything in the mid court, we still have Megg [Collins] and Kayla [Ingham] and they are just as good as anyone.

“We’re feeling strong in the attacking end. It’s about getting the two new girls combining in defence and putting things into place.” Saker said there were a number of different reasons for the changes to the playing group. He said most of the group this year was under the age of 22. Mia and Matilda White (not sisters) have been given the starting roles in the defensive end. Mia has claimed the club’s B-grade best and fairest the past two seasons, and Saker said he was keen to give her an opportunity. Both Mia and Matilda played in the club’s under-19 team last season. Ashlee Mitchell and Annie Hills form a new-look goaling circle, while midcourter Marie Bolitho comes across from Rockbank. Saker got his first glimpse of the new side in

round one, when they faced reigning premiers North Ballarat City. He said there were some good signs early on, but they weren’t able to do it for long enough. “We played well for a half of netball,” he said. “We weren’t in the contest after half-time. “We faded out in the third quarter … We had basic errors and got lazy. “We didn’t capitalise on their errors and against quality sides like North Ballarat City you can’t do that. They won the flag last year.” Saker said it was that consistency that would be the biggest key for them this season as they look to remain one of the top sides. The Cobras this week face cross-town rival Darley. In other matches this week, Melton South face the Sunbury Lions, while Melton takes on East Point.

With the Rockbank community growing and evolving, so to are the local sporting clubs. As more families from different backgrounds move into the area, Rockbank Football Netball Club and its junior club, the Western Rams, are seeing new members joining. Rams football operations manager Gavin Sporle said it was encouraging to see so many people from different backgrounds getting involved. He said it was something they wanted to build on and make the club a second home for everyone in the community, whether they have been in the area for a number of years or just moved in. “We want to engage them in the local community, and in sport and recreation,” he said. “We want to continue to grow all areas of the club. “We want to get them involved in football and netball or even on the sidelines supporting their local teams. Hopefully we can continue to grow over the next couple of years.” Sporle highlighted their junior program where they’ve gone from one child from an Indian background two years ago, to eight this year across two different teams. There’s also a number of children from different backgrounds in the program. He said the children loved getting out there and playing together, and were all having plenty of fun in the process. The Rams have focused on getting their junior program back up and running in the past few years. This season they have two football teams, up from one last year. They are hopeful to have junior netball teams back up and running as soon as possible. “We want to get the word out there about the club and what we’re doing down here,” Sporle said. “There’s new estates with a lot of families of different backgrounds moving to the area. “We want them to know that they are welcome at the club.” The Rams’ senior sides had the weekend off due to the Easter break. Caroline Springs looks to build on hockey success Caroline Springs Hockey Club continues to grow and develop in the Hockey Victoria Vic League competition. Its top women’s side earned promotion into Vic League 2 last year, while the men’s top side has joined the Vic League ranks this season, playing in Vic League 3. Springers vice-president Ron Shadbolt said making the Vic League had been a goal when the club started three years ago. “Overall the club is going quite well,” he said. “Things are starting to settle now after a good start. “That [Vic League] was the goal, but the hard work begins now. It’s about maintaining

that goal now.” Both the men’s and women’s sides have new coaches this year. Hans Kovarik has taken over from David Gorton in coaching the men’s side, while Bo Kelly is coaching the women’s side. Shadbolt, who had coached the women’s side the past two years, said both he and Gorton had decided they needed a year off coaching. “I’ve been coaching non-stop for 34 years,” he said. “Teams can get used to getting the same message and sometimes you need new voices. “I’m still overseeing the coaching. I’m starting to spend more time with the juniors.”

Shadbolt said things were looking positive for both Vic League sides this season, with high hopes again. The men’s top side started the season with an 11-1 win against Old Melburnians, before a bye in round two. “It’s a different style of play,” Shadbolt said of going up the grades. “We only lost one or two players from last year and we’ve got a quality side. “We started quite well and we expected that. “Hans was really pleased with how they played on the day. I think we will have a pretty strong team.” The women’s top side is looking to defend

its title in Vic League 2. Shadbolt said they were given the opportunity to go into Vic League 1, their second promotion in as many years, but decided against it this season. “We don’t have depth in our second side,” he said. “We want to build a solid base and if we are able to get back there and have a shot at Vic League 1, we’ll look at taking it.” The Springers started the season with a 0-0 draw against Bayside Cougars, after not capitalising on their dominance of the play. Centrals think positive By Tara Murray Melton Centrals will get a clearer indication of where they sit in the Riddell District Netball League pecking order over the next few rounds. Centrals split their opening two matches, against Rockbank and Lancefield, with long-time Centrals coach Randy Pereira saying he wasn’t surprised by the results. He said the match against Rockbank, which they narrowly lost, was impacted by a couple of their mid-courters being ill. The side had 18 less scoring shots, but the final margin was only six goals – meaning they weren’t getting the ball down their end. Centrals put in a much better performance against Lancefield in round two, scoring a convincing win. Pereira said they were keen to see how they would fare against some of the favourites. Last season was one of Centrals worst in a number of years. “I think it should be a pretty good season,” Pereira said. “Hopefully, we’re a better team than last year. We’re just looking to get another mid-courter. “But we will not know where we sit until we play some of the better teams.” Centrals have a different looking line-up to last season. Rita White-Kay returns after missing last season through pregnancy. She adds flexibility at both ends of the court. Teagan Tily has come across from the Central Highlands Netball League and will provide some pace in the front half. Isabella Masterson is another addition, while former Lancefield defender Ashlea Hyatt will combine with Caitlin Duncan in defence. Ashley Gul has come through the ranks, along with Abbey Grant and Gabby Menabue. Pereira said that while there had been a record number of players trying out for the club’s four sides this season, there was a lack of top-end talent. That has led to star shooter Bec Morabito coming out of retirement. Morabito, who has won the competition’s Ryan medal three times, decided at the end of last season to retire. “It takes a lot to change Bec’s mind,” said Pereira of his daughter. “I didn’t put any pressure on her. I said after a league coaches meeting, ‘If we don’t pick up another goaler will you play?’ “She’s starting to enjoy netball again. She didn’t enjoy it last year. She refuses to get paid and is playing for free.” Off court, former Rockbank coach Lizzy Masterson has joined the club as a specialist coach. She took the reins in Centrals’ win against Lancefield. The Melton Thoroughbreds’ young guns have tasted success at the Basketball Victoria Country Championships. Competing in the under-12 and under-14 age groups, the young Thoroughbreds came away with two titles in the school holidays. The Thoroughbreds’ under-14 boys won the division 2 final against Mildura Heat 50-38. Amarion Aning top-scored for the Thoroughbreds with 13 points in the decider, capping off a good tournament in which he scored double figures in several games. Zac Dransman and Reece McGrath also scored double figures in the grand final. The Thoroughbreds won seven of their nine matches on the way to the title. The under-14 girls side made the quarter-finals in division 3 before losing in overtime to the Warrugal Warriors. Olivia Falzon top-scored for the Thoroughbreds. The under-12 girls claimed their division 2 title. The Thoroughbreds had little trouble in the grand final against Sale Sonics, winning 40-16. There was an even spread of scorers for the Thoroughbreds with Elle Price (14 points) and Maddison Brady (seven points) leading the way. The Thoroughbreds won seven of their nine matches across the week. The under-12 boys were knocked out in the quarter-finals of division 3, losing to Horsham Hornets 45-41. The Thoroughbreds’ Big V sides had the Easter break off. The men’s side, which is sitting seventh with a 3-4 record, will be on the road on Saturday night against the North East Bushrangers. The fourth-placed women’s division 2 side will face third-placed Coburg Giants on Sunday, while the youth league 2 men’s side will be at home on Saturday night, playing the Western Port Steelers.
