Car fans in for fast fun Car lovers of the west, start your engines – the Myrniong Historic Car Sprint is back for another year. As part of the event, vintage cars from the 1920s up to the mid-’70s will be displayed, with many racing the clock along an 850-metre stretch of Korobeit Road on April 14. Steve Pike, who has been restoring cars for years, said the sprint was always a highlight. “It’s always a fantastic day out, not just for the racers or those showing their cars, but also for families,” Mr Pike said. “There’s production cars and sports cars – and they’re broken up into the different classes and you race the clock along the track. “I think the best time is around 26 seconds, but most people just want to beat their personal bests.” Along with all the automotive entertainment, there will food and activities for the family. The event raises funds for the maintenance of Myrniong Hall. “There’s normally about 100 entries, and then probably 200 to 300 people coming down, so it’s a big day for the Myrniong community,” Mr Pike said. “A lot of sponsors in the community have contributed towards trophies and vouchers for the various categories, so it will a good fun day out.” Entry costs $10, children free. Western rents head north By Jim Malo Rents in some western suburbs have increased at the same rate as some of the city’s most prestigious suburbs over the past year, sparking alarm from advocates who are warning of increased rental stress among families. Melton rents have increased by more than 20 per cent in the past five years, with the median weekly rent rising from $270 in 2013 to $330 in 2018. That rise of 22.2 per cent is in the top five rent increases in metropolitan Melbourne suburbs.
Median weekly rents increased by 15 per cent over the past year in Keilor and 5 per cent in Broadmeadows and Roxburgh Park. Rents over the same period in Malvern have increased by 7.6 per cent and by 7.5 per cent in Albert Park and Middle Park. Inner-city rents, on the other hand, have declined the most amid Melbourne’s cooling house prices, new Department of Health and Human Services figures show. Over the past five years, traditional affordability bastions of Werribee and Hoppers Crossing have experienced rent increases of
more than 20 per cent. That growth in prices is behind only Thornbury and Armadale, the department’s December 2018 Rental Report shows. Keilor’s 15 per cent growth over the past year was particularly stark given its five-year growth from 2013 to 2018 of 21.7 per cent was the sixth highest across the city. Tenants Victoria policy officer Natalie Rutherford said the rise increased the levels of housing stress for vulnerable families. “A family with two children receiving Newstart, an income of $793, and renting a
three-bedroom house in Keilor pays more than 44 per cent of their income just to put a roof over their heads,” she said. “Affordable private housing is hard to find, badly maintained, and expensive to heat.” A generational change was occurring in Keilor, leading to bigger properties being rented out for higher prices, Brad Teal director Brad Teal said. “It’s the end of the generational cycles where people are moving out of homes and putting them on the rental market for the first time,” he said.

Lake upgrade sheds new light By Ewen McRae Just in time for the end of daylight savings, the Light Up Lake Caroline lighting upgrades have been officially unveiled. In response to calls for improved lighting around the lake to enhance community safety, more than 70 light towers have been installed around the lake’s perimeter. The completed project was launched with a Heart Foundation walk, a night market and Kororoit MP Marlene Kairouz joining councillors and locals to celebrate last Friday.

“Lake Caroline is a wonderful spot for Caroline Springs’ residents to socialise, exercise and enjoy the local sights and birdlife,” Ms Kairouz said. “The Light Up Lake Caroline project makes it a suitable venue for people to visit at night as well.”
Lights now cover the full 1.9-kilometre perimeter of the lake, making it a safer place for walking after dark. For nearby residents, the lights dim to 50 per cent after midnight before returning to full strength at 5.30am. The project was supported by two state government grants valued at $355,000, as well as a contribution of $360,000 from Melton council. The money for the project came through the government’s Public Safety Infrastructure grants, which support projects that improve
community safety, security and confidence in public places. Across Victoria, the grants are being used to improve lighting, install CCTV, upgrade landscaping and streetscapes and improve facilities and urban design to increase natural surveillance and perceptions of safety. The Public Safety Infrastructure grants are part of the government’s Community Crime Prevention Program. The program has funded seven projects valued at more than $670,000 in Melton since 2015.

Classics hit the right note for orchestra Warm up those vocal cords, the Moorabool Light Orchestra is ready to kick off its 2019 season. With an ensemble of more than 40 instruments, and four guest vocalists, the orchestra is launching into the year with a homage to the stage and screen. Musical director Barry Wilkins said playing classics from The Sound of Music, My Fair Lady and Les Miserables, among others, was an ideal way to start the year.
“We’ve done Broadway and jazz before, so doing some of these classics now seemed like the right fit,” Mr Wilkins said. “These songs are timeless, and we have a broad audience so it will be a great night.” As well as the large ensemble of talented musicians, the crowd will also get to enjoy guest vocalists Roger Lemke (Australian baritone), Maxine Montgomery (Ballarat soprano), Robert Barbaro and Honey Rouhani (both based in Europe, performing with the
Scottish and Welsh national opera companies). “It’s been a bit of a coup to get such a high standard of vocalists along, because most of the time you would have to go into Melbourne or Sydney to see these guys,” Mr Wilkins said. A recent two-day blitz of Melton roads detected nearly 100 offences and resulted in multiple arrests. The operation teamed Melton Highway Patrol with their Brimbank counterparts to target traffic offences in response to the poor start to the year’s road toll. There have been 79 lives lost on Victorian roads this year, up more than 43 per cent on the same time in 2018. The operation began on March 22 and targeted the Melton township and surrounding freeways and back roads. In all, 91 offences were detected from 73 offending drivers, including three positive drug tests, seven unlicensed or learner drivers, and 16 speeding drivers. One driver was detected more than 25km/h over the limit. Three people were arrested, with eight outstanding warrants executed, one person was remanded into custody and six people will receive a summons to attend court. There were 20 drivers caught using their mobile phone while driving, while a dozen people were also caught with seatbelt offences. Meanwhile, the use of false number plates is on the rise in Brimbank and Melton, police are warning. In one incident, police spotted a car driving at double the speed limit in Melton while displaying fake plates on March 23. Police said the unlicensed driver, a 20-year-old man, was arrested after allegedly ramming a police car. The man is facing charges of exposing an emergency worker to danger with a vehicle.

Dash cam appeal
Police want to speak to a driver captured on dashcam footage following a fatal truck collision in Parwan on March 25. Investigators believe a truck was travelling north on Geelong-Bacchus Marsh Road about 6.30am and was trying to negotiate a bend when it crossed into northbound lanes and swerved to avoid an oncoming vehicle. A northbound truck collided with the trailer of the southbound truck and left the road and crashed into a shed. The sole occupant and driver of the southbound truck died at the scene. Police wish to speak to the driver of a vehicle captured on dashcam at the intersection of Smith Road and Bacchus-Geelong Road at 6.30am, seconds before the collision. Children and families left their mark on the Moorabool Wind Farm last week. The farm, which is currently under construction near Mt Wallace, had one of the giant turbine blades delivered last week, with excited locals given the opportunity to sign their name or leave a message on the side of the blade. School groups and locals from around Ballan stopped by to get a closer look at the 68-metre blade on March 27, before it was trucked to
the site of the farm to become one of 107 wind turbines. Once completed, the farm is expected to generate enough electricity to power 200,000 Victorian homes for a year, almost 9 per cent of the state. Construction on the project began in July, 2018, and is expected to be completed by late 2019.

Women Paving the Way project, a partnership between the Women Making It Happen group and Djerriwarrh Health Services, honours notable women from the Melton region from throughout history. The groups hope that the project will lead to many conversations about Melton women.

A Women Making It Happen spokesperson said the project had a proposal before Melton council to have engraved pavers installed at a central Melton location to highlight the achievements of these prominent women. “We formed a working group at the start of last year and we came up with an idea to set in stone the past and present influential women of the Melton municipality,” the spokesperson said. “We want to pave the way for future generations and start conversations about the significance that women have had previously and continue to have in the community. “It’s all about promoting the women of Melton more.” Criteria for inclusion in the project include being a trailblazer, a significant contribution to industry and/or the Melton municipality and participation in non-traditional roles. Among the first 12 shortlisted candidates for the project are Joan Richmond (racing

An application to build seven properties on a corner block in Melton has been knocked back by the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal. The application to build six double-storey dwellings and one single-storey house on the corner of Church and Hewson streets was originally refused by the council on the grounds of over development, neighbourhood character, and failure to provide adequate and convenient parking. Council officers had recommended the permit for the 1628 square metre site be approved, however councillors voted to deny the permit. During the tribunal hearing, the developer’s representative said VCAT should give greater weight to the council officers recommendation and said the claim of over development did not add up given the site’s proximity to the Melton town centre. However VCAT upheld the council’s decision, saying the introduction of so many double-storey homes in a largely single-storey area went against the neighborhood’s character. “The immediate area exhibits a single dwelling development pattern with a building rhythm typical of a single dwelling per lot in a suburban location,” VCAT member Christina Fong said. “In all, I do not support the … development on design and neighbourhood character grounds.” Ewen McRae

Sports plan fails to attract cash By Ewen McRae Local MP Catherine King has called on the federal government to fund upgrades on sporting facilities around Bacchus Marsh in this week’s budget. Ms King, the federal member for Ballarat, visited the Bacchus Marsh Racecourse and Recreation Reserve last week to see progress on construction of stage one of the facilities upgrades there, but joined with shire staff in lamenting the lack of federal funding for the next stage.
Stage one includes construction of an oval and BMX track. An application for federal funding for more soccer and cricket grounds, lighting and a sports pavilion was knocked back recently. “These big infrastructure projects, particularly in a council like Moorabool that is desperately squeezed for active recreation space, are vital to keep clubs going,” Ms King said. “I would have expected that this project, given the number of times it has come up, would have been one of the priority projects. “When you see the projects that have been
funded, and the amount of money spent in largely Liberal seats that they want to hold at the upcoming election it’s pretty frustrating. “There are kids in this area that have just as much right to play on great sporting facilities.” Moorabool shire chief executive Derek Madden said it was frustrating to be knocked back. “Council has invested significantly in this area, but this is the second time that council has been rejected federally,” he said. “We initially applied for $5 million, and this most recent application was for $2.8 million.
“With the growth that is happening in the shire this is going to be the pre-eminent sporting facility in the area, but we need some support to make it happen.” Ms King stopped short of guaranteeing a Labor government would fund the project if elected at the upcoming election. “If the Liberal government fails to fund it I will continue to advocate for more funding for this important project,” she said. “I have already made representations to Don Farrell, Labor’s shadow minister for sport, regarding this project, and I will continue to do so.”

If breakfast is the most important meal of the day, Staughton College must have a lot of very happy students. The Melton South school last week celebrated 10 years of its Breakfast Club, which runs two mornings a week and feeds up to 300 students a free breakfast. The club is the brainchild of Michelle Mayhew, who founded the club while working with Scripture Union Victoria and looking for a way to help her local community. “I went along to schools and asked them what needs they had – and Staughton said a breakfast club would be great,” she said. “From there it was going around to local schools in Melton to get volunteers and then local businesses to help sponsor the program … it just sort of grew from there. “It’s unbelievable to see how far it has come in 10 years – it’s now a vital part of the running of the school.”

Woodlea is doing a fantastic job of inclusion and activities for residents. Chances are you know everyone on your street. What could make the area better? A local fitness centre and dog park would be brilliant. We just need a space to let my dog run around. Where is your favourite place to go for a feed in the area? I love going to Izumi in Caroline Springs. They do great Japanese food that’s really fresh. Can you tell me about your push to get people signed up for the Run For The Kids? Why is the cause so important to you? It’s an opportunity to give back to the
community and just help people find their confidence in training. The Royal Children’s Hospital has helped so many children and families, including my own sister who had her spleen removed when she was just three. How can people get involved or support the cause? I’d love to see more locals sign up for Run for the Kids or donate directly to the Royal Children’s Hospital. What was it like having Sharni Layton down for a training session? It was an unforgettable experience. Not only is she very down to earth and connected with everyone who participated, but she got involved and encouraged everyone to complete the drills. What would people be surprised to know about you? On the topic of AFL – I support the most unlikely team and have been a member for nine years, the Fremantle Football Club.

The Bacchus Marsh - Romix Quarries dispute which has raged since April 1978 is due to be solved in the Supreme Court on Friday. The Supreme Court will be virtually giving the “rubber stamp” to an agreement reached between all parties involved at a hearing of the planning Appeals Tribunal last Friday.

It was a tough weekend for the Western Jets’ two NAB League sides – both were on the receiving end of big losses. The girl’s team was looking for its first win of the season on Saturday against the Eastern Ranges. After a slow start, the Ranges were able to take control of the game. That started to reflect on the scoreboard, with the Ranges winning 7.4 (46)-0.3 (3). Nikita Wright and Ruby Tripodi were named the Jets’ best in the loss. The Jets are one of three sides without a win after four matches in the girls competition. They this week face the Greater Western Victoria Rebels. Meanwhile on Sunday, the Jets proved no match for the Eastern Ranges. The Ranges kicked the first seven goals of the game, putting the Jets behind the eight-ball early on. While they were able to share the spoils in the second quarter, the Ranges continued on their way in the second half. The Ranges winning 13.19 (97)-5.4 (34) to give the Jets their first loss of the season. It was all single goalkickers for the Jets. Melton Broncos have taken on a new challenge, with the club fielding a side in the NRL Vic men’s first grade competition for the first time. The Broncos have had a side in division 2 for the past four years and decided it was time to make the next step in the club’s history. Broncos’ vice-president Brad Baker said the feedback from the club members encouraged them to take the next step. “We had a reasonable year last year and thought this was the right direction for the club to head in,� Baker said. “We had more numbers than we can have for one men’s team, so we decided to have a second men’s team and have a first grade team.� It was a tough initiation to life in the first division, with the Broncos losing 30-10 to the Truganina Rabbitohs. Baker admitted that they struggled at times during the game. “It was a new experience for the boys and it will take some time to work out some teething problems They’re still getting a sense and feeling of playing with other.� Baker said while he was unsure what the expectations were of coach Peni Amato, he said the first and main thing was to gain experience and get better each week. “Hopefully if we play well enough we can get a finals spot.� Baker said the development in the men’s program was reflected across all the grades. The club has players from under-6s through to senior men’s and women’s teams. He said there had been a jump in numbers across all the grades and they were looking to add more girls teams this year. “We’ve got a real family vibe at the club and there’s a good feeling around.�

Melton City Little Athletics Centre threw itself into a top-10 finish at the Little Athletics state track and field championships. Melton athletes won seven gold, three silver and two bronze at the recent championships, to finish 10th in the state. In its region, Melton finished second behind the powerhouse of Geelong. Melton coach Damien Wapshott said they were thrilled with the results. Overall, Melton had competitors in 52 events. “For a small club it’s a big improvement and we’re pumped with how we went,” Wapshott said. “We knew we had a few talented kids, but you don’t know what will happen on the day. “We have 160 athletes compared to Geelong which has 800. We are a smaller club up against it.” Melton’s best results came in the throwing events, where it won all 12 of its medals.
Melton City throwing coach Shane Benbow said he had seen a steady progression in the three years he’s been at the club. The club won six medals in his first year. “We expected to go alright [at the recent championships], but that is beyond expectations,” he said. “If you compare the ratio of medals to the number of athletes, it makes us the number one centre in our region.” Manafo Corine Ropeti claimed two gold medals and one bronze in the under-11 throwing events. Benbow said she also claimed a state record in the discus with a throw which is the second furthest thrown in Australia for that age. “She’s only relatively new to the club, she started just before Christmas,” he said. Alyssa Benbow had a clean sweep of the under-12 girls throwing events, winning three gold medals.

Star Weekly sports journalist Tara Murray has won the Basketball Victoria Media Award for 2018. Murray received the award at Basketball Victoria’s annual awards night last Tuesday at the State Basketball Centre. The award is in recognition of Murray’s overall coverage of basketball throughout the Hume, Whittlesea, Sunbury and Macedon Ranges, Melton and Moorabool areas. Murray has written stories on the Big V competition, including Sunbury Jets and Craigieburn Eagles championships, the Country Basketball League competition, state representatives and local associations.
Melton Thoroughbreds found an extra gear in overtime against Collingwood All Stars to record their second win of the Big V Women’s division 2 season. In a topsy turvy game, where both sides had periods of dominance, the undermanned Thoroughbreds gathered themselves late to win 83-79. Thoroughbreds’ coach Lauren Olcorn said there were some positives to come out of the game. “I’m really happy to get over the line,” she said. “We had the Conroys missing last night, meaning we were down two vital players. It meant we played with a rotation of eight players. “We knew we would have to step up and it was a pretty tough four quarters “We had to pull out of a rut.”
Olcorn said they would to continue to work on staying focused for the full 40 minutes, after having poor periods of play in all three of their games so far this season. She said they were able to remain focused in extra time and things went their way. “We were rewarded in the end. We thought Collingwood may have got a few more points late, but things went back our way.” Five players scored double figures, led by Molly Young who top scored with 19 points. Olcorn said the defence work of Rebecca Marshall and Taylah Lea had led to several steals, while Stacey Procak and Molly Young both played well on the talls. She also praised the efforts of Allanna Procak who had the job of reducing the impact of import Nyesha Sims. While Sims still scored 26 points, Olcorn said Procak did a great job. The win has the Thoroughbreds sitting 2-1 after three rounds. Olcorn said they still had a lot of work to do over the next few weeks. “I’m pretty happy, but still disappointed with our loss against Wallan. Melton Centrals has named Ray Martin as its coach for the upcoming AFL Goldfields Women’s season. Martin had been volunteering at training throughout the pre-season before deciding to take on the coaching role. He has coached the side previously.

Darley builds a campaign with a core youth policy Darley’s young guns will be a key factor in the side’s fortunes in the Ballarat Football League this season. While the Devils have had some player changes with departures and inclusions, coach Heath Scotland said he was most excited about what the younger players can do. Several players made their debuts last season and this year they’re looking to hold down their spots. “The growth from the kids underneath will be the key for us,” Scotland said. “We got games into young players last season and its held us in good stead. “They’ve been training really well. We had eight debut last season and six look like holding down their own spots.” Scotland highlighted players such as Andrew Azzopardi, Blake Colley, Joel Cadman, Jack Bewley and Duncan Cadman as those who
have taken their games to another level in the pre-season. Jai Dodemaide and Nash Reynolds should also be in the running when not playing for the Western Jets. Scotland said he was happy with the list heading into the season. He said they felt they had covered the departures well and were a stronger side than 12 months ago. Henderson Medal winner Steve Kennedy is the biggest out and he is joined by Dylan Reid, Abe Kur, Luke Delahey and Dan Roy, while Rhys Ellis is travelling. Former Carlton player Nick Graham was an big early signing for the Devils. Trent Angwin comes across from cross rival Bacchus Marsh, while Casey Young will provide a key target up forward. VFL-listed Josh Pickess along with Sam
Hitchings and former Bendigo Pioneers player Bailey Waasdorp have also come across. Nicholas Thacker, who played in the 2017 premiership, has verbally agreed to return. “Steve Kennedy is a big loss for us, but Nick Graham is probably a better player, a little more balanced,” Scotland said “We’ve been able to fill the roles of Abe and Dylan in the ruck internally. “Who we have lost, I feel like we have replaced with better players.” Scotland said there could still be a couple more signings before the season starts. Scotland is planning to pull on the boots again this season, joking he was starting to feel like John Farnham with so many comebacks. He said playing in the club’s 100th year was a privilege. “The 100-year celebration is a nice one to finish the playing career on,” he said.

“It’s an opportunity to celebrate the proud history of the club which has produced 21 or 22 flags. “We’ve got lots of events happening … Hopefully we hold up our end.” The Devils start their season on April 13 against the Sunbury Lions. After a disappointing end last season, Scotland said they were keen to have another crack. “We were confident in where we were last season and felt with our best side, we had the team to win the flag. “We got taught a lesson in the preliminary final. “If we keep the best players … our list is as good as anyone’s. Rams’ recruit right at home
Spring Hills’ good start to the FFV state league 4 west season continued with a hard-fought win against Melbourne City on Saturday. Coming off a 7-1 win in round one, the Stallions were keen to make it two from two. Stallions team manager Joe Febbraio said, like all games between the two sides, it was a difficult one, with the Stallions winning 2-1. “Every time we play them it’s a tough encounter and it was no different. We were happy to get the three points,” he said. “We thought we controlled it for the most part. They scored a fantastic goal in the first half from some individual brilliance. “We equalised within 10 minutes and it was 1-1 at half-time. We reinforced with the lads what they had to do at half-time and scored one early on and things were going along nicely.” The last part of the game was full of drama, with both teams having players sent off. Melbourne City went down a player first, before the Stallions had Jason Trajkovski sent off with a red card for a late tackle. Melbourne City had the chance to steal a point late when they had a penalty shot but it missed. An incident after that shot resulted in a second Melbourne City player being sent from the field, leaving it with nine players. Rocky Calfapietra scored both goals for the Stallions. Febbraio said early wins were key in what looked like being a close season. He said they were still coming together as a team. “The first two games have been quite good,” he said. “We’ve got a bit of a rebuild on and we’ve got some new players and some new young kids being integrated. “Everything is going quite well and they are fitting into the side and style that David [Maglovski] wants.” The Stallions are one of two clubs to have two wins after the first two rounds. They this week journey to Bell Park, a traditionally difficult pitch for travelling teams. It was a big weekend for the Stallions, with their gala day on Sunday with sides from throughout the club playing each other in one last practice match before the season starts. In other FFV state league 4 west results, Westside Strikers had a 3-3 draw with Melbourne University. Raul Isac, Addisu Gebrehiwot and Daniel Sfetcopoulos were the goalscorers for the Strikers as they had their second straight draw. In state league 5 west, Melton Phoenix suffered its first loss of the season, losing to West Point 2-1. In state league 1 north-west, Caroline Springs George Cross remains winless after losing to Sydenham Park 2-0.
Ash Gray didn’t have long to settle into life in Victoria before stepping on the field for Rockbank. One of the Rams’ key recruits for the Riddell District Football League season, Gray basically stepped off a plane and onto the field. “I landed at 7.30am and then came straight out to Rockbank and straight into a game,” he said. “It was a good hit-out. I did feel it a little bit in the second half though.” Gray has made the move from Western Australia to try his luck in Victoria. The vice-captain and reigning best and fairest winner at Chapman Valley, said he decided it was a time for a new challenge. An approach from Rams coach Lachie Waterman was all it took to get him thinking about a change of scenery. Waterman coached against Gray back in Western Australia. “I just thought it was a good opportunity for me and my partner to get out of WA and see what else is out there,” Gray said. “Lachie got in touch with me on Facebook and I sat there and thought about it for a month. “The more I spoke to people, the more I thought about giving it a crack.” In the short time he’s been in Rockbank Gray said he’s enjoyed it and it reminds him of home. Gray will have a familiar face on the field, with former teammate Shane Bonney also joining the Rams this season. Gray, who has played midfield and forward, said he would like to play defence with Rams if given the chance. And he is right at home taking on a leadership role at the club. “I know what it takes. Before I left my old club we had been building the last four years and are looking at playing finals this year. “I’ve got that experience coming from a bottom side and trying to work the way up the ladder.” Waterman was full of praise for Gray. “Ash was one of my favourite players in the GFL and we kept in touch via social media. “He’s a country boy who loves his footy and it’s a great fit for our club. “At 27-years-old Ash still has his best football ahead of him.” The Rams start their season on Saturday against Melton Centrals.
