Melton Country Club generated losses from gamblers of $5.685 million in 2017-18 – the lowest of the seven pokies venues in Melton, which collectively drained a record $67.8 million dollars from gamblers over the 12 months to the end of October. Essendon’s current lease expires in February 2022. “Melton needs more community facilities, so why not just rip out the pokies, say farewell to Essendon and convert the Melton Country Club into an alternative facility, such as a council-subsidised ‘pokies free’ RSL and bowling club located in a public recreation zone,” Mr Costello said. “With a deluge of television advertising and kids getting increasingly addicted to the screen, the Australian community has never been more concerned about gambling and they want their elected representatives to do something about it.” Melton council was contacted for comment.

Melton council has approved a 29-year lease extension allowing AFL club Essendon to continue operating poker machines at Melton Country Club. The council unanimously voted 8-0 at last week’s meeting in favour of Essendon continuing to run its 89 poker machines at the club until the end of 2047. However, in a dramatic twist, Cr Steve Abboushi – who was not at the meeting – has since put forward a rescission motion, which has the effect of repealing the council resolution. “We need an opportunity to hear from all sides, not just Essendon’s,” Cr Abboushi said. The rescission motion means debate will resume on the Essendon lease at the council’s next meeting in February, provided Cr Abboushi’s motion is seconded by another councillor at the beginning of the meeting. “I will always consider these matters with an open mind – I just feel that allowing a 29-year lease extension of a council-owned facility without an opportunity to consider all the associated issues is quite serious,” Cr Abboushi said. “There was absolutely no debate on this matter on Monday [at the council meeting] and I can’t understand why.” Gambling reform advocate Tim Costello slammed the council’s original decision. “Unlike its struggling community, City of Melton has so much cash from developers it doesn’t need to make $294,000 a year from an Essendon pokies venue,” he said. “Melton is one of the fastest growing councils in Australia but also suffers
considerable social disadvantage such as high levels of family violence, mortgage stress and crime. “Council has a moral obligation to not add to this problem by enabling pokies dens to operate in council venues. “They should read their own 2017 Municipal Health Plan and enact their own strategic objective of ‘reducing harm from gambling’.”

Christmas crisis for homeless By Joanna Catalano Melton youth homeless services are bracing for a busy Christmas. Hope Street’s residential sites across the north west, including Melton, will be offering temporary home and outreach services to more than 50 young people, aged 16-21, some of who have children of their own. Hope Street chief executive Donna Bennett said the youth homeless service predicts the last week of December and early January will be a busy period.
“For the young people spending the holiday season in a refuge, Christmas can be a particularly challenging time,” she said. “It is another reminder that they are not celebrating special occasions with their own family in their own home.” Requests for crisis outreach support are expected to be higher than usual during this time of year. Family violence is often spurred by increased alcohol consumption and increased financial stress, which in turn can put rental security in jeopardy.
Rising stars of baking Creative young bakers have been decorating their cakes and eating them too. Caroline Springs library last week held cupcake-decorating classes for children aged 6-12. Digging into Christmas Diggers Rest residents have embraced the Christmas spirit this holiday season. AVID property group’s Bloomdale Movie Under the Stars event was attended by 130 people earlier this month. The celebration was held at the Parkview Village Park, which opened this year. Families were treated to a live performance from entertainment group The Christmas Belles. There was also fairy floss and popcorn, as family and friends relaxed under the stars to watch Paddington 2. Avid general manager Victoria Peter Vlitas said the holiday season was the
perfect opportunity to get together and meet neighbours. “End of year celebrations at Bloomdale are all about coming together, catching up with old friends and creating new ones,” he said. The event also included a sausage sizzle provided by the Diggers Rest Bulla Village Cricket Club and Santa Claus made a grand entrance. “It was wonderful to see our amazing community relax under the stars and reflect on what an eventful year it has been – including Bloomdale’s,” Mr Vlitas said. A-League heads west
V/Line doubles down on works
By Charlene Macaulay The west will be home to a new A-League soccer team after scoring one of two new Football Federation Australia expansion licences. The Western Melbourne Group and Macarthur-South West Sydney were granted club licenses following an FFA board meeting on Wednesday, December 12. The Western Melbourne Group is expected to make its debut in the 2019-20 A-League season and will train and compete at Geelong’s Kardinia Park while its home ground, the multi-million-dollar Wyndham Stadium, is under construction in Tarneit. The 15,000-seat stadium – which has been fully funded – will be built on Wyndham council-owned land at 1160 Sayers Road, Tarneit, and is expected to be ready for the opening round of the 2021-22 A-League season. It will include elite training pitches, sports medicine facilities and a gym. Residential and commercial development is planned for the surrounding area. FFA chief executive David Gallop said one of the key strengths of the Western Melbourne Group bid was its proposal to build Australia’s first soccer-owned and soccer-specific stadium. “The prospect of a facility owned by football for football will be a significant new milestone for the game in Australia,” Mr Gallop said. “Football-specific stadia have been extremely successful in league expansion in other parts of the world and we are excited by the prospect of such a facility in Melbourne.” FFA chairman Chris Nikou said the two bids chosen were located in some of the biggest growth corridors in Australia and presented long-term growth opportunities. Mr Nikou stressed the decision was “not a full stop for the expansion process”, with the

FFA keen to eventually expand to 14 teams. Western Melbourne director of football Steve Horvat thanked the group’s partner, Wyndham council, for its hard work and commitment to the bid. The bid also had the support of Brimbank, Maribyrnong and Melton councils. “[The council’s] vision from day one in identifying our future home has been a cornerstone of our bid,” Mr Horvat said.

“Most of all, we thank the people of western Melbourne for daring to dream and giving the bid team the energy and drive to make this happen. “Football is all about the fans and Western Melbourne will be fan-centric in everything we do.” As previously reported by Star Weekly Weekly, the Western Melbourne Group has already been chatting to possible marquee player recruits to ensure the new club has a strong player base. Mr Horvat said the Western Melbourne Group had started preliminary planning for building Wyndham Stadium and expected to turn soil on the project within 12 months.
V/Line undertook essential track and signal maintenance between Ararat and Deer Park last week. The nine-day work blitz took place from December 8-16 so construction can continue on the half-a-billion-dollar Ballarat line upgrade this month. Coaches replaced trains between Ballarat, Wendouree and Southern Cross station, while Maryborough trains continued to run to and from Ballarat. V/Line chief executive James Pinder said combining the V/Line works with Ballarat line upgrade construction would reduce the disruption for passengers. “Our staff and contractors will use this time to complete maintenance work on parts of the Ballarat and Ararat lines, to ensure the track, signals and other infrastructure are in good shape for summer,” he said. “Staff will rappel down the 130-year-old Melton Weir viaduct and use underwater technology to inspect footings, as part of routine maintenance of our major bridges on the corridor.” “Track crews will replace rail near Parwan, as well as removing mud holes and vegetation over-hanging the rail corridor between Bacchus Marsh and Ballarat.” The Murray Basin Rail project stage two works are continuing at Ararat Junction to allow freight trains to move more efficiently between the Maryborough to Ararat line and the interstate network. Shopping upgrade squares up By Joanna Catalano A $45 million extension of Melton East’s CS Square shopping centre is on track to open in April 2019. The works under way include upgrades to the northern carpark and parents rooms. More than 2500 solar panels have been installed to power all common areas of the centre, generating enough electricity to power about 110 homes. Works have also begun to upgrade the centre’s disabled facilities, as well as lighting,
landscaping and general amenities at the western entry. Once completed, the CS Square development will offer an additional 6500 square metres of retail, which will include a Woolworths supermarket and 10 additional specialty stores. There will be an addition of 230 carparks, bringing the total number of parking spaces to 1170, and a car wash in the eastern carpark. CS Square shopping centre manager Rod Kennedy said the upgrades will offer greater accessibility and wider selection for
shoppers. “These upgrades will offer our customers an expanded variety of retail providing greater convenience,” he said. “With works on track for completion in April next year, it will also help strengthen our position as one of the leading shopping destinations within the Melton area.”

Taking the next step A Hillside dance studio is still striking a beat with the community after 25 years. Dancewest Studios owner Sharon Mamo, who opened the doors to the studio in 1993, said it was humbling to look back on a quarter of a century of dance, teaching and laughter. “It’s absolutely amazing to be able to look back on 25 years,” Ms Mamo said. “I’m really proud of what we’ve been able to achieve here.” Ms Mamo said the key to her longevity has been being able to adapt to changing times. “When I first opened there wasn’t too many dance studios out here – now there’s a lot,” she said. “We’re still a boutique studio, but we like to adapt to what our clients want. “At the moment we do hip hop, jazz, beat pilates and vocals for ages three to adults.” Ms Mamo has been supported by a loyal team over the journey.
“I’ve got two teachers here, Megan who has been with me 20 years and Victoria who has been with me 17 years,” she said. “They both started off as students and are now teaching the next generation. “We also have another former student, Alyssa who is our vocals teacher.” Ms Mamo said the studio didn’t mark the 25-year occasion with a celebration, preferring to focus on the future. “We didn’t really want to spend a whole heap of money celebrating the occasion with a big party or anything,” she said. “We’ll keep on doing what we’ve been doing and head for 30.” Tate Papworth Kiah (front), Sharon, Madison, Rebecca and James. Getting to know Melton and its people. A lot of the people I meet have lived here for 30-40 years and they love the place. I also love working for the Foodbank, helping out people who really need it, it’s nice to be a listening ear.
How did you find the move?
What is something people may not know about you?
I’ve met quite a few people my age in Melton; we’ve had similar life experiences, which makes it easy to connect. When I first moved a few took me under their wing. I also had an instant family in joining the Open Door Baptist church.
I love to play the piano. We had a piano in our family growing up, I was the youngest of five girls and my sisters would teach me how to play. We have a piano at home now and I come home and play for my husband, who really enjoys the music.
What is your involvement with volunteering in Melton?
What is your favourite thing about Melton?
I volunteer at four different places in Melton, one each morning, four days of the week. At Djerriwarrh I help the admin girls with all the work they can’t get to. Then I work at Foodbank Melton where I am a stock rotator. When we get food in I decide where to put it and what needs to go in the fridge or freezer, that one is quite physical. I also volunteer at the Melton Botanic Garden where I do admin for the nursery section and on Fridays I help out the Open Door Baptist Church who run a kids club. I organise drinks for the parents and get involved in the games with the children.
The paths and parks. When you take the kids to the playground you have a choice as to which one to go to, there are so many that are close and accessible, and the ease of going for a walk through one of the paths is so lovely. If you could change anything about the area, what would it be? When we moved to Kurunjang we found it challenging to learn our way around because some of the streets don’t have signs. Now we know our way around, but we didn’t know the names back then which made it difficult.

Summer is well and truly here, and the festive season is upon us.
Please be advised that our offices will close at 5pm on 21 December and re-open at 8.30am on 27 December. Council civic centres and offices will also be closed on 1 January 2019.
It’s an exciting time of year, when we have the chance to get out and about with family and friends and enjoy some of the fantastic parks, playgrounds and reserves our community has to offer.
Residents can call Council’s 24 hour phone service on 9747 7200 and a Council officer will contact you during business hours. If the matter is urgent, the operator will connect you to Council’s emergency after hours paging service. Waste collection There will be NO GARBAGE, RECYCLING OR GREEN WASTE COLLECTIONS on Christmas Day. During the week of Christmas, all collections will take place one day later than normal. Last Friday, it was my great pleasure to attend the long awaited opening of Westwood Drive road and bridge in Burnside Heights. The $8.7 million project will redirect around 10,000 vehicles per day away from Caroline Springs Boulevard and Gourlay Road, and cut up to 10 minutes travel time; while a three meter-wide shared path will create a safe place for walkers, runners and cyclists to be active and stay healthy.

Council is very pleased to have delivered this much-needed project that not only adds to the liveability of our City, but further confirms our commitment to enriching our communities through access to infrastructure and facilities. Recently I became aware of safety concerns surrounding the intersection of Caroline Springs Boulevard and Commercial Road where drivers have been misjudging gaps in traffic when
entering the intersection, resulting in several vehicle collisions and nearmisses. Council Traffic Engineers worked with VicRoads to develop options to improve the safety of the intersection, and recommended a remodelled signal plan to restrict drivers turning right from Caroline Springs Boulevard on a green arrow only. The plan was approved by VicRoads, and will be implemented in coming weeks. Another great outcome for our community. I’ve had great feedback on the school visits, like messages from parents or kids saying how it made a difference. “I think having a young person standing up and talking at the schools has been a big part of that – a lot of kids find it hard to relate when it’s an older person … talking about this stuff.” While her first book, My Discreet Bully Bully, focused on her experiences with bullying, the new book will focus more on body positivity. “There’s more in there on self love, but still about bullying,” she said. “I’m hoping it will be out in February.”

Monique Mastrobattista has had a busy year – and 2019 is shaping up to be another big one as she prepares to launch her second book. The Caroline Springs anti-bullying campaigner, 15, has visited schools and built a strong social media following as she spreads her message, one inspired by her own experience of bullying. Ms Mastrobattista has received a $10,000 grant from the AMP Foundation’s Tomorrow Fund, which supports talented people who are working hard for community benefit but need help to go to the next level. She said the grant would be a big help in spreading her message. “It’s going to make a huge difference,” she said. “I can use that to make more video

As well as the radio, I have family photos, phone charger and a book about money matters on my bedside table right now. Where will you spend Christmas Day this year? We will be with my wife’s extended family at the house of my brother-in-law. We do KK and there are lots of kids – about 12, including my four-year-old daughter and one-year-old son. What’s your favourite piece of furniture in your own home? It would have to be my four-seater lounge which is nice and deep and lets me slouch while I watch TV or get on my iPad. It’s grey and we have colourful cushions – and, of course, it’s from Harvey Norman and actually made in Melbourne. What’s the latest in home furniture? Natural fabrics are overtaking leather in lounges, and green is a really popular shade for cushions – especially the jungle prints. CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir takes up residence at Dumpling House Tina’s Dumpling House is a major arrival in Altona. The food at Tina’s is good and the prices and service righteous – so much so that Altona locals will surely ensure its success and residents of the wider west are advised to consider it a destination. Indeed, in terms of quality for this kind of food, the prices are bang on par with what’s available elsewhere. As well, most dumplings can be had in variable serving sizes of six or 12 pieces. Of course, Tina’s is not just about dumplings – there’s a range of main courses, rice dishes and noodles available. And, yes, you can get here lemon chicken or sweet-and-sour pork if that is your bent. Tina’s has taken over a Pier Street premises long home to a previous Chinese restaurant. It’s a lovely room in which to sup. The wait time of 15 to 20 minutes for dumplings is re-assuring in terms of knowing a house-made philosophy is in play. Pan-fried pork-and-cabbage dumplings ($7.80 for six, $11.80 for 12) are terrific. All too often, we find the meaty centres of such dumplings have a turd-like toughness – even good ones! At Tina’s, the fillings are luscious and tender. Steamed prawn dumplings ($7.80 for four) are just as good, with a full quotient of that essential bursty prawn effect going on. Steamed barbecue pork buns ($6.80 for two) are, for me, a revelation.
TINA’S DUMPLING HOUSE Address: 54 Pier Street, Altona Phone: 9398 8851 We usually order these for bun fan boy Bennie, while I remain bemused and/or unimpressed. This plump pair are superb and make a fan boy out of me – like son, like father. The fluffy/moist buns are stuffed with a more generous than usual mix of hot, sticky chopped pork heavily perfumed with rice wine. Beef brisket soup noodle is one of our regular choices, but always with egg noodles. At Tina’s, we stumble into a rendition made with rice noodles, their whiteness imbuing the bowl with a pallidness that suggests bland. But there’s no doubting the robustness of the broth or the pleasure to be had from the excellent, tender chunks of beef ($11.80). Food lore tells us that there’s nothing Singaporean about Singapore fried noodles – just as there is nothing Chinese about egg foo young. But that doesn’t mean a dish of “Singapore” fried noodles, often less oily than other Chinese wok-fried noodle dishes and with a fetching grittiness delivered by curry powder, cannot be immensely enjoyable and satisfying. SPORT Rockbank’s recruit is ready to lead the way New Rockbank recruit Shane Bonney is looking forward to making the move to Victoria for the next step of his football career. Bonney, who grew up in Western Australia and has played his football there, is the Rams’ first recruit for next year’s Riddell District Football League season. The 27-year-old comes across after playing with Brigades in the Great Northern Football League this season. Brigades made the grand final, but Bonney missed the game through injury. Before that, he spent four years at Western Australian Football League clubs East Fremantle and West Perth, playing in the reserves. Bonney said he was excited about the move to Rockbank.
“I’ve always wanted to move interstate to play football,” he said. “I decided to take up the offer … I’ve always wanted to play in Melbourne.” Bonney got in touch with Rockbank through a recruiting website for footballers and was happy with what Rams’ coach Lachie Waterman said about the club. The two both spent time at East Fremantle Football Club, Waterman as a coach and Bonney as a player, but were at the club at different times. Bonney said because he was coming from the country, he thought he would fit in well at Rockbank. He expects to play in the midfield and add some experience to the young Rockbank side.
“Lachie wants me to be a leader,” he said. “I’m happy to set an example. I captained my club when I was 21 before I went down to the WAFL.” Bonney said he was hoping to be in Victoria some time next month. Waterman said he was excited by what Bonney could bring to the side. “Shane is a quality person – a huge coup for the club,” he said. “He will add some run and drive and experience to our young group.” The signing is a big step for Waterman, who was appointed as the Rams’ coach last month. Waterman said after his appointment that he knew the challenges that lay ahead of him, with Rockbank finishing bottom this year with just one win.
Experience on their side By Tara Murray Central Highlands will field an experienced team in the Youth Premier League under-18 titles next month. The tournament, formally known as the Cricket Victoria under-18 male state championships, will include the best cricketers of the state. The Highlanders side will again be coached by Karl Mayne, with Damien Bonner as assistant coach. Mayne said he was happy with how preparations had gone so far. “We had a practice match and it came down to the last ball,” he said. “We had a five-run win over the North West Wizards, who are a traditionally strong team and have a number of players playing Premier Cricket. “It was played at Greenvale, where the tournament is being held, so it was good to go and see the facilities.” Mayne said the squad had a number of top-age players, with eight of the team who played earlier this year at the championships returning. He said Cameron McClure, who performed well in the practice match, would be a player to watch. “He is a tall fast bowler and he had a fantastic performance, with plenty of bounce and pace.” While the Highlanders have an evenlybalanced squad, Mayne said the middle order was likely to lead the way. Former Rupertswood player Emerson White, Darley’s Joel Cadman and former Gisborne player Riley Vernon are expected to be among the runs. “They’ve got some runs on the board this season,” Mayne said of the trio. “Emerson made a 100 for Essendon’s fourths and is now playing in the thirds. Riley has put three 50s together as well. “A number of others have [Premier] experience.” Other locals in the squad include Gisborne’s Joel Garbutt, Riddell’s Ben Radford and Bacchus Marsh’s Jacob Pawlowicz. As well as a new name, the tournament format has changed, with matches to be played as T20 games, instead of one-dayers. Mayne said it was the ideal time for young players to play T20. “It’s a great fit at this age, where some players need to get experience in the T20 format,” he said. “We’ve been doing a bit of practice of power hitting and working on 360 degree hitting. “The bowlers are working hard on plans to execute at different times.” Mayne said the game plan is to get momentum early on. The Highlanders play two games on January 14, with seven games played within four days.
“It’s a big challenge and not many get the opportunity to coach in the centenary year,” he said when appointed. “It’s a clean slate, which is good. We’re looking to be super competitive and don’t want to get belted every week. “I’m under no illusions that there’s a lot of hard work to go.” Among the players who have re-signed for the Rams are Jordan and Mitchell Baumgartner, Tom Mainey, Brandon McGee, Jake Mallia and Jamie Austin, Braedon Billing, Harley and Ricky Cameron, Brayden Dixon, Alan and Thomas Greenwood, and Stuart and Samuel Lowe have left the club. Local rivals Rockbank and Melton Centrals will face each other in the opening round of the Riddell District Football Netball League season on April 6. The opening round is full of local clashes, with reigning premiers Diggers Rest hosting Rupertswood. The season will have 18 rounds, with each team having two byes. There will be a bye every week because Sunbury Kangaroos have left the competition. No football or netball will be played on the Easter weekend, but all sides are scheduled to play on the Queen’s Birthday weekend.

Melton South and Melton won’t have long to wait to face each other in the Ballarat Football Netball League. The league draft fixture has them scheduled to meet in round one on April 13. Bacchus Marsh is set to start its season against Redan, while Darley is likely to wait until the third weekend of the season to kick off. The Devils have a bye in round one and only one game will be played on the Easter weekend, leaving the Devils to start their season on Anzac Day, against arch rival Bacchus Marsh. The final fixture is expected to be released before Christmas.

The league announced last week the top 10 players from each conference, as voted by the coaches and players. Anthony Hibbert will finally pull on the jumper for Melton in the Ballarat Football League. Hibbert was denied a clearance from crosstown rival Melton South this season because he was a contracted player. The Bloods had tried for a clearance for Hibbert three times last season before deciding to wait out his contract. Hibbert’s clearance for next season has been approved. Panthers work on a fix for fourth-quarter fades Melton South’s players are hitting the track hard in their bid to climb up the Ballarat Football League ladder. After a season that included one win and finishing last, the Panthers know there is a lot of work ahead of them. Coach Heath Pritchard is in his first pre-season at the club, having taken over as coach midway through last season. He says the pre-season is going well and numbers on the track are pleasing, with the training intensity coming as something of a shock to the players. “We’ve had the likes of 40 to 50 on the track,” Pritchard said. “The guys have really ramped it up. The feedback is that it’s harder than in the past. “We are working hard to improve ourselves. In the games I coached last year, we were up to our eyeballs at three-quarter time before falling away. We don’t want that to happen next year. Clubs will have to work hard for four quarters to beat Melton South.”
Pritchard said the Panthers would be selective on the recruitment front, only adding players who filled certain needs. The first of those recruits is former Carlton big man Paul Bower. Bower, who played 90 games for the Blues, joins the Panthers having played a key role for Deer Park in helping it win a sixth straight Western Region Football League division 1 premiership. Pritchard said the club was thrilled to get Bower, who would add some extra height into the squad – something it missed last season. “He fills a need,” Pritchard said. “We were determined to bring some height into the side and he’s in a good age bracket. “He can play both ends of the ground. He’s pretty fit and can run through the midfield as well. We’re excited to have him at the club.” At this stage, Bower is the only definite signing for the Panthers. On the other side, Mark Lynch is the big out for the team. Having commuted from
Queensland to play this year, he’s chosen to stay and play in Queensland next year. Former coach Brendan Fevola, who played just one game this year, and another former AFL player in Farren Ray have also moved on. Connor Charge and Dylan Clarke have moved to Melton Centrals. In other coaching news, Marc Dransman will coach the Melton South reserves. Travis Chapman will again assist Pritchard, while Dale Houghton will be a playing assistant coach. Tara Murray

Cobras stick to the plan By Tara Murray Bacchus Marsh is sticking with the same playing group as it hopes to bounce back from a disappointing 2018 season. For much of this year, the Cobras were considered one of the favourites, before fading late and being knocked out in the first week of the finals. Even though he wasn’t at the club this year, new Cobras coach Peter Davey knows motivation runs high within the playing group. Davey replaces Travis Hodgson, who stepped away from the Cobras with a year left on his contract. “From a motivational point of view, we’ve been hurt from the last two years and we want to get back and win premierships,” Davey said. “We’ll be doing everything to get the boys right.” The Cobras were one of the later teams to get back on the track, with their first pre-season session in the first week of December. Davey said they started later due to fading late last season and wanting to make sure they peaked at the right time next season. It didn’t stop the players doing their own training. “The guys have had an individual running group for the last six weeks,” Davey said. “Jake Owen has been running it.” With pre-season under way the Cobras have been working on some changes to the game plan which come naturally under a new coach. Fitness is another key area, and Davey has brought in a mate who ran Geelong’s fitness program a couple of years ago. Davey said the two worked together as his old club, Banyule, which Davey said was the fittest team in the competition. Off field, the Cobras have been one of the quietest teams on the player movement front. Ben Speight, who played one season with the Cobras, has moved on due to moving for work commitments. Trent Angwin, who is contracted at the Cobras, has been linked to Darley after the club made an announcement on its Facebook page. Davey said he was bemused that signing a contracted player would be announced on social media. On the other side, the Cobras have not announced any new players of yet. Harrison King, who combined playing with the Cobras and Werribee’s VFL side last season, will play full-time with the Cobras which is a boost. Davey said they deliberately did not go on a recruiting spree. “We haven’t been overly active,” he said. “That is the path we’ve chosen to go down. “We want to bring in and promote the young guys into the side.” Davey said there may be some positional changes next year. He had one-on-one meetings with everyone which included discussing what they thought was their best positions.
“I’ve thrown the carrot out there,” he sad. “They have to do the work and I will reward them. “I will do some things differently, but I’m not planning to turn things on their heads.”
Titans chip away at basic game North Western Titans need to continue to improve if they are to match it with the top sides in the Baseball Victoria Summer League division 3. Coach Danny Hymes said while the Titans had only won two games after 11 rounds, they had improved on their debut season. “We’ve improved a lot, but it’s just not showing,” he said. “We are more competitive in a lot of areas. We need to learn from our mistakes. “Baseball has improved across the competition … It’s the basic elements of baseball that they are doing better than us.” Hymes said there were a couple of areas that have been the difference between them and other sides. He said sometimes it’s just one innings that proves to be the difference, while other times it’s about timing. “We have to execute better and once we get that right, we’ll be right,” he said. “We need to string some hits together. Against Chelsea Dolphins we felt like we had more hits than them and everyone got a hit. But other teams aren’t leaving people on bases like we are.” Hymes said not having a full side available had hurt them at times, because they don’t have as much depth as other clubs. He’s hoping things will improve on that front in the new year. “We’ve picked up some players in the last few weeks and they will play after Christmas,” he said. “They will strengthen the first grade side. They’re three players who have played in a higher grade. “We’ll finally have a bit more depth.” Hymes said one of the positives this season had been the development of younger players, Nathan Ayiaq and Kyle Hodgetts. Both are still teenagers and learning the game. “They are both starting to shine,” he said. “They’ve started to show more poise and are feeling bit more confident.” The Titans final game before the Christmas break was against Pakenham Pumas after Star Weekly went to print. Mazda’s new lap of luxury By Derek Ogden, Marque Motoring Mazda says buyers of its popular CX-9 are so fond of life’s little luxuries that it has upped the ante on its aristo Azami model in the shape of the LE, thus bringing the range of the award-winning seven-seat sports utility vehicle to five. Customer demand was the reason for the addition of the Azami LE, says Mazda Australia managing director Vinesh Bhindi. “CX-9 sales have always been skewed to high-grade AWD variants, so we added Azami LE to give those looking for luxury even greater choice in the range.” These petrol-powered Mazda SUVs (no diesel) – consisting of Sport, Touring, GT and Azami in front or all-wheel drive, have a wide range of driver support systems, including Mazda’s comprehensive safety package, i-Activsense. The system has been extensively improved for a second time since the second-generation CX-9 was first launched in 2016 and run out across the entire model range. Alongside existing technologies, including smart city brake support (forward and reverse), blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert and driver attention alert, come Mazda radar cruise control with stop/go function, smart brake support, lane departure warning, lane-keep assist, traffic sign recognition and high beam control fitted standard on all grades. All Mazda CX-9 grades are now equipped with an active driving display, which projects key information onto the windscreen, and tyre pressure monitoring. The new CX-9 also becomes the first SUV in Mazda Australia’s line-up to hook up to Apple CarPlay and Android Auto with its MZD Connect infotainment system. Mazda CX-9 Sport and Touring have standard 18-inch alloy wheels with a pattern we are told is designed to accentuate their size. The addition brings a new level of
sophistication to cabin surroundings with rich red Chroma Brown nappa leather on the seats, genuine timber decorative panels on the doors and centre console, framed by ambient LED lighting. A minimalist overhead console design and hand-crafted box stitching on the leather wrapped steering wheel complete the deluxe interior. The touches of luxury would not be complete without a smooth ride in quiet, vibration-free
surroundings, so Mazda engineers went to work on the suspension and steering system to give the car a more linear driving feel and greater ride comfort, while noise, vibration, and harshness levels have been further reduced. The engine is mated with a six-speed automatic transmission and either front-wheel-drive or i-Activ all-wheel drive, except in the Azami LE which is all-wheel drive only. Our launch drive in Tasmania was book-ended by the top-notch Azami LE all-wheel drive, selling for $66,490, plus on-road costs, and entry-level Sport front-wheel drive, costing $44,990, a difference of more than $21,000. Mazda claims Azami LE AWD fuel consumption of 8.8 litres per 100 kilometres on the combined urban / highway cycle and the Sport FWD 8.4. The Tassie twosome came up with closer to 10 L/100 km in a mix of town and country driving.
