Association member Deborah Sweeney said the show was a light-hearted take on the experiences of medical staff and patients at a hospital. “We’ve got some fabulous songs … and it’s going to be a good laugh for the whole family,” Ms Sweeney said. Guy’s big regional rail bid By Sumeyya Ilanbey Railway tracks between Melton and Sunshine will be quadrupled, passing loops west of Bacchus Marsh extended and level crossings removed under the Opposition’s bold $19 billion regional rail plan to cut travel times into Melbourne if it wins next month’s Victorian election. The Coalition has promised to introduce a “European-style” rail network that will eventually reduce the trip from Ballarat to Melbourne to 45 minutes, down from the current 73 minutes. The plan involves laying new tracks that will allow trains to travel at 200km/h, up from the current 160km/h, and introducing two new
train fleets. Opposition Leader Matthew Guy is making the pitch to regional voters ahead of the election as part of his decentralisation plan. “We need to decentralise population growth from Melbourne … we must grow all of Victoria,” he told reporters last week. “The last four years has been focusing on Melbourne, Melbourne, Melbourne. This plan is providing an incentive to decentralise our population; it’s about opportunities and job growths outside of Melbourne.” As part of the plan, express services from Ballarat to Melbourne will be introduced as early as next year to reduce travel times to 65 minutes. Star Weekly asked the Opposition what the
express services would mean for commuters in Melton and Moorabool and if existing services would be slashed to introduce the express services, but didn’t receive a response. Public Transport Users Association Ballarat spokesman Ben Lever said it was “wary” of headline-grabbing promises for express services on the Ballarat line, which is plagued with capacity issues. “The long sections of single track leave very few opportunities for trains to pass each other, which makes it hard to run trains frequently, and even harder to clear the path for $120
express trains,” he said. “While the line is as close to capacity as it is now, having expresses often means getting other trains out of the way to give them a clean run, which means a few minutes off the journey for the small number of people who take the express train, while adding a long wait time for everyone else.” But he welcomed plans to quadruple tracks and extend passing loops, and said this was the perfect opportunity for the Coalition to electrify the railway line between Melton and Deer Park.

Deputy mayor tops expense list By Sumeyya Ilanbey Six Melton councillors claimed more than $16,000 in conference, seminar and training bills in a year, with one councillor accounting for almost half those expenses. Ratepayers had to foot the bill for deputy mayor Ken Hardy to attend six events in the past financial year, totalling $7523, comprising: • Victorian Local Government Association’s mayors and deputy mayors connect conference in February, 2018 ($1591). • Australian Local Government Association’s 2018 National General Assembly of Local
Government in June, 2018 ($2213). • Contract Law Fundamentals in May, 2018 ($1494). • Australasia Chinese Cities Summit and Business Forum in September, 2017 ($300). • National Growth Areas Alliance conference in November, 2017 ($1116). • Resilient Australia Awards in November, 2017 ($1109). The mayors during this period, Sophie Ramsey and Bob Turner, spent $2263 and $2545, respectively. Cr Melissa De Santis attended one conference for $364; Cr Steve Abboushi attended a
conference for $2538; and Cr Kathy Majdlik billed for two memberships and one conference for $934. Councillors Lara Carli, Michelle Mendes and Goran Kesic didn’t claim any conference, seminar or training-related expenses. Melton legal and governance manager Christine Denyer said attending conferences and training played an important role in councillors remaining on top of issues. “Council is committed to … providing training and development support for elected members, and the importance of them representing council in a variety of forums,” Ms
Denyer said. As part of Melton council policy, chief executive Kel Tori approves attendance for conferences and training “designed to improve the knowledge, skills, function and/or capacity of the councillor”. Councillors Hardy, De Santis, Turner, Majdlik and Abboushi attended Municipal Association of Victoria conferences and training using a “credit points” system. Ms Denyer said council purchased credit points when it paid its annual MAV membership and those points were used to pay for councillor attendance at association events.

Deadly dog virus is easily collared ■
Dog owners are being urged to vaccinate their pooches against the highly contagious parvovirus, which can be deadly. The virus attacks cells, particularly the lining of the gastrointestinal tract and bone marrow. This can be fatal for dogs and puppies that are unvaccinated or have incomplete vaccinations.
Australian Veterinary Association president Paula Parker said many pets’ lives were unnecessarily put at risk. “Canine parvo is a disease that we have excellent vaccines for,” Dr Parker said. “This is not a disease that we need to see any more.”
Dogs that are showing signs of lethargy, vomiting or diarrhoea should be taken to a vet immediately, Dr Parker said. “Early treatment is essential in improving the chance of survival,” she said. Sumeyya Ilanbey
The Liberal Party has pledged $210,000 for the Diggers Rest CFA to purchase a new light tanker if the party wins next month’s state election. Brigade captain Tim Welshe said the brigade’s current tanker was past its use-by date. “A new tanker is phenomenally important, especially with the expansion of the township,” Mr Welshe said. “The existing tanker is 13 years old … it has a refurbished body that is in excess of 35 years, so just beyond its use. “The new light tanker, matched with the new technologies, give us a … greater safety operating margin.” The brigade had raised $30,000 towards a new tanker. However, the Coalition’s promise to wholly fund a light tanker means the brigade will be able to use the $30,000 on other equipment, according to Mr Welshe. The Liberal candidate for Sunbury, Cassandra Marr, said the light tanker would be small enough to fit down suburban streets. “It is vital that the Diggers Rest CFA has the resources it needs to fight fires and protect our local communities when we need help the most, and this new pumper tanker will provide that,” she said. “I fully support our volunteer firefighters in their efforts to keep our community safe.” The opposition’s emergency services spokesman, Brad Battin, said: “Volunteers selflessly give their time to serve their community – they deserve the best possible equipment and the respect of their state government.” Sumeyya Ilanbey

Melton Rotary treasurer Brendan Richards said the target organisations were doing invaluable work in the community and needed financial help.
“It makes a tremendous difference for them,” he said. “Last year, we raised $18,000 so each organisation got $6000. Imagine Foodbank getting all that money. They don’t just give goods. Bacchus Marsh picks a winner By Sumeyya Ilanbey The Bacchus Marsh State Emergency Service unit is one of four Moorabool organisations to receive funding from the state government’s Pick My Project initiative. Communities across the state could vote on projects put forward in their regions. There were more than 100 applications from the Central Highlands Region. The Bacchus Marsh SES received 326 votes and was awarded $190,000 for a storage and training facility. Moorabool council will receive $120,000 to
install a playground and seats at Mason’s Lane Reserve, in Bacchus Marsh, after receiving 224 votes. Bacchus Marsh Primary School was successful in its application for a $84,431 grant for a “makerspace” – a large, open workspace equipped with a range of innovative 21st century technologies, including 3D printers and drones. A youth-led mental health campaign, delivered by Moorabool Youth Action Group, will receive $20,000. Moorabool mayor Paul Tatchell said he was
delighted the projects had been successful in their application for funding. “We have four very different projects but all four will greatly benefit people in our community,” Cr Tatchell said. “Masons Lane is used by so many different groups: sporting groups, walkers, school groups, dog obedience. The playground and seating fits in with the masterplan for the reserve. “We thank those involved in applying for funding for contacting council to discuss plans with us prior to applying.”
No Melton projects received funding because they did not secure enough votes. Premier Daniel Andrews said hundreds of “wonderful” local projects across the state were getting the funding they deserved. “These projects have been chosen by locals to benefit locals – giving great little ideas the support they need to get off the ground,” Mr Andrews said. Minister for Suburban Development Lily D’Ambrosio said: “For the first time ever, we’ve given communities the power to decide the projects that are right for them”.
Light work at the lake Additional lighting around Lake Caroline will be installed to help improve safety, thanks to a state government grant. The lighting around the lake, at Caroline Springs, is expected to increase “natural” surveillance by encouraging more people to use the area. Kororoit MP Marlene Kairouz announced a $105,000 grant, part of the latest round of the Public Safety Infrastructure Fund, last week. Ms Kairouz said the grant would allow Melton council to engage a number of contractors to help deliver the project. “These public safety infrastructure grants help to increase community safety, security and confidence in public places and also encourage communities to actively contribute to community safety solutions in their local areas,” Ms Kairouz said. “These projects will help tackle crime and anti-social behaviour by improving the design
of the local environment, providing safer and more accessible areas for the people of Kororoit to enjoy.” Melton mayor Bob Turner said: “We are pleased the state government is supporting Melton City Council’s initiatives to make public spaces safer and more accessible to City of Melton residents. “I look forward to seeing the lake light up completely in the near future once works are complete.” The Light-Up Lake Caroline project is being delivered by Melton council and is expected to cost about $750,000. Dream home turns sour By Sumeyya Ilanbey It was meant to be their dream house – double storey with four bedrooms in the coveted suburb of Taylors Hill. But not long after moving into their Simonds Homes-built house in 2005, the Murugesu family said they started noticing cracks appearing on the interior walls. Then the ceiling started to crack, tiles began to lift and the exterior walls cracked. The foundation of the house has now moved to such an extent, the family is unable to open some windows and doors, and close others. The cracking on the outside walls has caused rain to seep inside the cladding, rusting some metal beams, as well as inside the house. Viswanathan Murugesu took Star Weekly on a tour of the family home, revealing the extent of the damage, which includes curved walls and architraves. “It was going to be our dream house, my wife was so happy,” Mr Murugesu says. “A few months later all the cracks started appearing.” Mr Murugesu said he has contacted Simonds Homes several times over the years. He says the building company “patched up” the problems, without addressing the root cause of the issue or agreeing to rebuild the house. But the building giant denies it’s not trying to resolve the issue. Simonds Homes chief executive Kelvin Ryan said the company offered to fix the house in line with a report by an engineer engaged by Mr Murugesu. “However, upon this offer by Simonds, the owner alleged that their engineer did not consider all issues with the home. Simonds suggested the owners re-engage their independent engineer at Simonds’ sole cost, to investigate issues in the home and produce

a revised expert report, which identified the expert’s investigations, findings and approved rectification method,” Mr Ryan said. “Then Simonds would again visit the owners to go through the report with them and agree to the approved rectification scope of work proposed in the report. “To date, the owners are refusing to engage
an expert to carry out these investigations because they want Simonds to agree upfront to demolish the home without seeing any detailed evidence.” Mr Murugesu said he wants the soil tested, and the house demolished and rebuilt. He also wants a national inquiry into building and design guidelines.

Melton build permits soar Melton is in the midst of a construction boom, with the value of building permit activity cracking the $1 billion mark in a year for the first time. More than 3500 building permits were issued in the past financial year, up 10 per cent from the year before, according the latest Victorian Building Authority statistics. In Moorabool, there were 856 building permits issued in the past financial year, with the total cost of works at $153 million. Melton ranked 12th in the state for the value of the building permit activity, while Moorabool ranked 44th. The top five permits, by value of work, issued in Melton were: • Freezer warehouse and distribution centre at Truganina, costing $29.8 million. • Residential building and office at Ravenhall ($29 million). • Refrigerated warehouse and distribution centre at Truganina ($29 million). • New school buildings at Plumpton ($19.5 million). • Residential building, office and site water storage tanks at Ravenhall ($17 million). Hub a ‘one-stop shop’ The long-awaited $21 million health hub at Melton will open next month. The Melton Health and Community Services Centre, on Barries Road, will be a one-stop health centre for the community, with programs covering indigenous health, chronic disease prevention and mental health, drug and alcohol services. Djerriwarrh Health Services will be the lead tenant. Its chief executive, Belinda Scott, said that following the complete roll-out of the information technology systems, the centre would open to the public. “For our communities, it’s going to be one-stop shop for families in crisis … it should mean there are smoother transitions between services,” Ms Scott said.

Now, three months down the track, 114 women will be graduating from the 10-week program, and I couldn’t be prouder of their efforts. As a former Sons of the West participant, I understand firsthand the benefits of this outstanding program, and the opportunity it provides to improve health and wellbeing through exercise and education. Melton City Council is offering carers, older people and people with disabilities, the opportunity to learn about services on offer in the City of Melton. As part of Carers Week, the Carers Access Resource Expo will be held on Thursday 18 October, between 10am and 2pm. There will be 69 exhibitors at the event who deliver support services or resources to carers, people with a disability, or older people within the City. The event is an open invitation to those who might want additional support, or those struggling to find the right care, particularly with the National Disability Insurance scheme (NDIS) having commenced in the City of Melton on earlier this month. Cr Goran Kesic It’s an exciting time for our City, with the commencement of a number of infrastructure projects and the delivery of others. Last week we officially opened the extension of Burnside Community Centre, which features an additional 550 square metres of multipurpose community space, to facilitate the delivery of seniors’ programs and other social support programs. As well as being an attractive building, reflecting features from the surrounding natural landscape, it’s also a functional space that can be partitioned or opened up depending on requirements. I encourage all Burnside residents, and indeed everyone in our City, to visit, gather, enjoy and use the new space; more details about location and opening hours can be found on Council’s website melton.vic.gov.au
If you’re a regular walker, runner or shopper in Caroline Springs, you may have noticed the works happening around the lake area. The Light Up Lake Caroline project arose from an identified need to improve community confidence to use and enjoy this beautiful public space outside daylight hours. The installation of lighting around the 1.9km pedestrian pathway has commenced, with work to be completed in sections, and we anticipate completion of Stage 1 works will be late November. I’m also pleased to report that additional State Government funding has just been announced, which will go towards Stage 2 works to complete lighting around the entire perimeter of the lake. Fight to fund foundation By Sumeyya Ilanbey A Melton mum is on a mission to highlight the “wonderful” work of the Epilepsy Foundation that is set to lose more than $1 million in annual state government funding. When Julia Vieira’s eight-year-old daughter Liliana was diagnosed with myoclonic epilepsy three years ago, the family didn’t know where to turn. Ms Vieira said the hospital couldn’t be of further help after Liliana was discharged, so their neurologist suggested they contact the Epilepsy Foundation. “You ring them up and they are on the phone assisting you,” Ms Vieira says. “If the person, or the family, is going through depression, the foundation can assist. If those services aren’t there, who’s going to help us? “There’s no one else out there to listen to you – your doctor is too busy, hospital is overwhelmed and they don’t know how to handle it further than observing and monitoring.” The Epilepsy Foundation, MND Victoria, Multiple Sclerosis and Parkinson’s Victoria will lose in total $5 million state government funding from July 1, 2019, as the National Disability Insurance Scheme fully rolls out. These four organisations collectively support more than 80,000 people. Ms Vieira said the Epilepsy Foundation provided support for her in her darkest days, and any blow to funding will come at a cost to the lives of people living with the neurological conditions and their families. “It’s just very scary,” Ms Vieira said. “Neurologists have said Liliana can die at any stage in her sleep, as a seizure can affect her while she’s sleeping. “We have a baby monitor, a camera with a motion sensor … a camera system on my mobile phone. She’s not allowed to swim on her

own, she’s not allowed anywhere in the house on her own. I’m constantly on edge every day. “It can be stressful, but the Epilepsy Foundation encourage me in every way. They encourage me to be the best person and mother I can be.” A spokesman for the foundation said 80 per
cent of Victorians who have epilepsy are not covered by the NDIS. And those who are, won’t have their management plans funded. The foundation is calling on people to contact their state MP to highlight the need for funding to continue. Ms Vieira has started a petition at bit.ly/2CruJ4B

Siren sounds on risky drivers Police detected 120 offences on Melton and Moorabool roads during the AFL grand final long weekend. Speeding offences made up the bulk of the offences, with 32 detected in Melton and 47 in Moorabool. Two drink-drivers and four drug-affected drivers were nabbed in Melton during Operation Scoreboard, while three drink-drivers and one drug-affected driver were caught in Moorabool. Senior Sergeant Deon Townsend-Booth, from the Highway Patrol, said the operation’s bottom line was safety. “We were able to intercept quite a few speeding drivers and distraction offences,” he said. “The operation was about us saturating the area to adjust driver behaviour, and the knock-on effect of that is less road trauma – at the end of the day, that’s what it’s all about.” Senior Sergeant Townsend-Booth said it was “frustrating” people were slow to understand the seriousness of using mobile phones while driving. “There’s still a lot of tragic accidents that happen as a result of distraction,” he said. “It only takes a split second.” Across the state, police detected 7565 traffic offences, including 2500 speeding and 500 mobile phone offences. Amy Zerafa was at risk of dropping out of school. The teenager felt lost in class and struggled to connect with her peers. “I would cry everyday and try to stay at home,” the 15-year-old recalled. “I hated school.” But Amy’s outlook changed dramatically when she started working at a student-run cafe at Brookside P-9 College earlier this year. The Hands on Learning cafe is among 10 Victorian innovations that have caught the attention of Finnish not-for-profit HundrED. While policy makers and politicians from around the world often look to Finland to improve their schools, the organisation has been studying what’s happening in Victorian classrooms. Last year, HundrED which receives funding from the Finnish government, chose the “education state” as its first location for a new project that identifies innovations and then shares them with the world. It has spent the past 10 months weighing up the state’s best education initiatives and will now publish guidelines to help other schools implement similar ideas. The organisation’s head of operations, Lasse Leponiemi, said the successful innovations all involved “fresh” thinking, improved student outcomes and had the ability to be scaled up. “We were excited to see that there are innovations all around the state, not just in Melbourne, and these are serving all sorts of different needs,” he said. Amy runs the cafe, which is supported by Save the Children, with eight classmates every Tuesday and takes great pride in brewing coffee for teachers and parents. She also cooks quiches

and pasta dishes using ingredients from the school’s kitchen garden. She said it was wonderful the cafe, which has been expanded to two other western suburbs state schools, has been recognised internationally. According to Amy, the cafe has changed her life. It’s taught her important social and entrepreneurial skills and also boosted her confidence.

“There is a reason for me to come to school,” she said. Amy’s teachers have also noticed changes. She is happier, more engaged and her attendance has improved dramatically. She’s gone from skipping up to three days of school a week, to attending full-time. She also has a goal: becoming a childcare worker. “I care about school a lot more,” she said. “And know I can pick up new skills.”

The future looks bright for two young jobseekers learning the ropes of the water industry in Sunbury. Sunbury’s Cassidy Pitts spent the past few months training in business administration at Western Water’s Macedon Street office. The 19-year-old recently graduated with a certificate 3 from Swinburne University and hopes to use the skills she picked up on the job for her future career. “I had really good support from our trainer,” Cassidy said. “I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do when I finished school but this experience has given me a lot of skills.” Classmate Luke Papaevangeliou, of Hillside, obtained his certificate 3 in water industry operations at Western Water and said he was keen to work his way up in the organisation. Luke is part of the field services team and is responsible for the maintenance of sewer and water pipes and pump stations. “I’m hoping to stay at Western Water for a long time,” he said. Customer and community relations general manager Graham Holt said Western Water offers traineeships across many areas of its business.
Tributes are flowing for Diggers Rest netballer Katie Dregers who has been remembered for her selflessness. The 26-year-old died last Tuesday, just weeks after her birthday, surrounded by family after battling a rare and aggressive form of brain and spinal cancer. A brain tumour was discovered nearly a year ago when Katie fell at work. In a devastating blow in August, another tumour, believed to be where the cancer originated, was found in her spine. Close friend Erin Surkitt said Katie brought people together with her warmth and charisma. “She always has a smile on her face, even when times were getting tough,” Ms Surkitt told Star Weekly. “She was a selfless person and was always the life of the party.” Before her health deteriorated, Katie had been accepted into the Australian Defence Force. “Katie was humbled that she had the opportunity to serve her country,” Ms Surkitt said. Friends, family and the wider community will don blue guernseys at the Melbourne Marathon on October 14 in Katie’s honour. MY PLACE John Gill, 56, has won 17 world martial arts championships. After dividing his time between Los Angeles and Sydney for the past 20 years, he moved to Melton three months ago. He speaks with Sumeyya Ilanbey. What’s your connection to Melton? I live here. It’s been only about three months … several years ago, I bought an investment property here and I really liked the area. When I decided to move to Australia, I thought we could move to Melton.
You see people grow from feeling defenceless and insecure – and sometime people are just shy – to really growing into confident, respectful human beings. Martial arts isn’t only about self-defence. That’s one aspect of it that can come in handy, but it’s more about personal development. There are physiological changes that come – you feel confident, you get self-esteem, self-belief, self-confidence.
What’s your favourite thing about living in Melton? The fresh air, compared to Los Angeles – or Sydney for that matter. It’s got a countrified feel. I’ve always lived in cities, so I wanted a change and a more countrified feel. There are also no traffic jams compared to Los Angeles, Sydney and Melbourne’s CBD.
What’s been the hardest and best part of your martial arts journey? The hardest was getting an injury while playing tennis and coping with that when teaching martial arts with a bad back. One stage, I was teaching up to 30 hours a week, which was quite tough. The best part is the world championships and competing. I’ve won 17 world championships and a lot of major titles … and an action star competition in December, 2016. I won that and now I get to be part of a movie being filmed next month in Los Angeles.
Where’s your favourite place to hang out in Melton? I like the shopping centre – there’s a movie theatre and everything is just so convenient. We just got a puppy, so we go walking a lot. It’s beautiful fresh air. How did you get involved in martial arts?

What would you change about the area if you could? I really like everything here because I bought in the new housing estate. The shopping centre is great. I wouldn’t change too much. My goal is to get people into sport, which is really good. North Korea’s president Kim Jong-un and South Korea’s president Moon Jae-in became quite friendly at the South Korea Olympics. And that was one of the first indications of the two countries coming together – and that was over sport.
When I was younger, around 11, I did judo. Watching Bruce Lee movies, I got inspired and thought, that’s pretty cool. I got to year 7 and I was pretending to be Bruce Lee; my nickname ended up being Fu, as in Kung Fu. Once I got my driver’s licence, I left school and did karate,
taekwondo, kickboxing – it’s just been an amazing journey. What does it take to become a successful martial arts student and instructor? Dedication, passion and wanting to help people.
What’s one thing people would be surprised to find out about you? A lot of people comment that I don’t look like a martial arts fighter. I’m into more traditional martial arts, which is about respect, discipline and doing the right thing. The photos we’ve seen suggest an outdoor and rather rustic operation, so we’re not at all sure how we’re going to go on a sunny Sunday that is also windy and chilly. After scoping the place out, we relax … having discovered that while orders are indeed processed outside, right next door is a big, warm and rather inviting dining room, its fittings seemingly niftily constructed from packing pallets. Cool! And whatever the meteorological challenges of ordering and dining amid the glorious tack of the Golden Mile, the place is doing very, very brisk business. This is a popular joint. The happy staff members are cheerful, chatty and efficient; the wait times about what you’d expect. We order, pay and settle in for what we hope will be a good burger repast. The menu and its lowish prices suggest solid and satisfying – and that’s pretty much how it goes for us. The chips ($4.50) are orthodox, hot and good. My kefta burger ($9.50) is definitely the big winner of our meal. It has lamb patty, cos lettuce, caramelised onions, pickles and “humus sauce” – and it’s beaut, especially given the $9.50 price tag. The parts are of sufficient quality, but he finds the sum to be just average. So for him, the highlight of our Burgies sojourn is his caramel biscotti gelato thickshake. When/if we return, we may well order from the chicken burger list, as a poultry pair we observe being consumed at the next table look pretty darn good and better than either of ours.

Melton’s magical victory By Tara Murray Melton pulled off a stunning comeback in the opening round of the Bowls Victoria pennant division 1, section 1 season. Melton trailed Werribee by 20 shots at one stage on Saturday, before hitting the front right at the end. Melton ended up winning 76 (14)-72 (4). Melton skip Conrad Dawson said everyone was ecstatic with the result. “Everyone ran onto the green once we won,� he said. “We had a slow start with a couple of bad decisions, but we managed to pull back. “We were 20 shots down before we fought back in every rink in the last nine ends to get the win. “Craig Norris played an absolute pearlier to break Werribee’s heart.� Dawson’s rink won 24-14, while David George’s rink won 25-16. Despite sealing the overall win, Norris’ rink lost 21-15. Ray Gnjidic’s rink also lost, 21-12. Dawson said the win was the perfect way to start the season, in what he said is the ‘group of death’. He said every match will be a challenge. “We want to win all our home games and make Melton a fortress,� he said. “If we can snag a few away wins that would be good too. “We would be ecstatic to make finals. That is our goal.� Dawson said they had lost three players in their top side from last season. He said they had been able to fill those spots, with other players looking to make the most of their opportunities. The Central Highlands Bowls Division gets underway this weekend. In division 1, Bacchus Marsh faces Gisborne Yellow, Gisborne Red plays Kyneton Golf, Kyneton takes on Lancefield and Romsey and Trentham do battle.

Sunbury Kangaroos members have voted emphatically to move to the Essendon District Football League next season. At a meeting last week, Kangaroos members voted 96-3 in favour of the move away from the Riddell District Football Netball League. A lack of netball teams is one reason behind the move, with RDFNL clubs expected to field four sides and the Kangaroos only having two. The Kangaroos are set to start next season in the division 2 competition and plan to work their way up the grades. In the club’s five year plan, they said they hoped to be playing division 1 finals within five years. The club’s women’s side already plays in the competition.

SPORT Caroline Springs ready to take the next step Caroline Springs is hoping with improvement this season it will again be in the mix in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association’s Charles Clark Shield division 4 competition. The Falcons finished second last season, falling to Moonee Valley in the first week of the finals. Having kept the same squad together, senior player Kane Sevior said they were happy with where things were at to begin the season. “Things have kind of crept up on us,” he said. “We’ve picked up a few players in the lower grades. Some more experienced heads to help with the juniors. “Our one’s and two’s are pretty similar.” Sevior said one of the keys for this season
would be the performances of their two imports. One of those, Gayashan Weerasekara averaged 71.1 with the bat last season and won the Ray Scriven Medal as the division’s best player. Sevior said if they could have the same performances from them and the others continue to develop, they would be in for a good season. He said the work they had done building up the side and bringing young players through the past few years was starting to shine through. “We’re still fairly young,” he said. “Chris [Vulic] and Jerome [Arandez] are our opening bowlers from last season and are still
young, while Lucas [Blackman] is our first or second change bowler, he is just 15.” Sevior said the area they hope the biggest improvement would come from is at the top of the batting order. Opening batsman Jackson Mills is one player they expect to step up. The Falcons will have a delayed start to the season when they take on Wyndhamvale in a one-dayer this weekend. They were due to get underway at the weekend, but all matches in their grade were cancelled because not enough pitches were ready. Only matches in three senior grades went ahead. Darley bats fail to fire By Tara Murray Darley’s hopes of a winning start to the Ballarat Cricket Association crumbled as the Lions’ batting order collapsed. The Lions did a good job with the ball and in the field against Mt Clear and looked on track with the bat while negotiating the early overs. But once the Lions lost their first wicket, the rest fell in quick succession. The Lions lost 10-40 to turn what looked like a good day into a disaster. Lions captain-coach Michael Alexander said they could not stop the flow of wickets and were bowled out for 69. He said some poor shots brought the downfall of many of their batsmen. “We were happy at the half-way point,” he said. “We just lost quick wickets in succession. We had an inexperienced batting line-up. “We weren’t able to get any partnerships of note. “We played some poor cricket shots and only have ourselves to blame.” Ryan Ali top scored with 20. The next highest was extras, with 13 as no other batsman reached double figures. Earlier, the Lions had restricted Mt Clear to 9-165. Ben Longhurst, Bradley Barnes, Ali and Mitch Ward took two wickets apiece for the Lions. Alexander said while the team was disappointed with the result they weren’t worried at this stage. “The issue will be if it keeps happening,” he said. “We can learn from it. We had a couple of players missing.” Lachlan Herring and two new imports will be on the players’ list soon. Alexander said West Indian Danza Hyatt and Sri Lankan Hasitha Wickramasinghe were still to arrive in the country. Hyatt, a former West Indian international, comes from playing with Gisborne last season, while Wickramasinghe played for Darley a few years ago. Both are all rounders and will add some more experience to the Lions’ batting line-up. Alexander said they were not sure when they would arrive. “We’re waiting for the paperwork,” he said. “We had a similar problem last year and we didn’t get our imports to round five or six. “Hopefully it will be sooner than that.” Hyatt and Wickramasinghe are the two main recruits for the Lions this season. Alexander said even though they were missing three batsmen from their line-up on Saturday, they were a lot more capable than the results showed. Titan women on base and loving it Getting out on the diamond on Saturday – not the result – was where it was at for the North Western Titans women’s side in Baseball Victoria Summer League division 3. Fielding a team for the first time, the Titans were already winners before they even played a game. While his charges lost 24-1 to Cheltenham Rustlers, Titans overall coach Danny Hymes said the smiles couldn’t be wiped from the players’ faces. “All we wanted was to get the team out there,” he said. “They got out there and enjoyed themselves and had a lot of fun. “Everyone played in different positions and the other team, which has been around for a couple of years, was fantastic helping out.” Hymes said everyone got opportunities and the players were able to put into practice some of the things they had learnt in the pre-season. Pleasingly for the Titans, they scored the first home run of the game to lead early. “Karina Colquhoun almost had a full game of pitching and threw about 100 pitches,” he said. “We got some hits as well and then took the lead. They were just pumped and happy. It’s about going upwards for them.” Hymes said they had a couple of players missing and would love a few more to come on board. A couple of junior girls would be coming into the team. “The more players the better,” he said. “We want to be able to rotate them through and give everyone a go.” The Titans will play their first home game this weekend against Bonbeach St Chads Bluejays. Meanwhile, on Sunday, the Titans men’s side suffered a second straight loss. The Titans failed to score as they went down to Pakenham Pumas 10-0 at home in division 3. The second men’s side did better, tying 6-6 with the Pumas. Both sides will play Ormond Glenhuntly-Gold this week. Tara Murray

Lions ready for challenge By Tara Murray Melton will have to bat well if it’s to come away with the points in the opening round of the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association. After a solid first day in the field, the Lions’ match with Malvern in the south-west division is evenly poised. The Lions got the first win of the match, with the game relocated from Malvern to the Lions home of MacPherson Park. In an attempt to get all matches starting on time, the VSDCA moved games to away team grounds if needed to get play started on Saturday. Malvern won the toss and elected to bat, with Melton playing coach Nathan Geisler saying he would have done the same. Malvern finished its overs on 4-222. Geisler said it was a mostly even day. “It was good that we didn’t have to travel to Malvern,” he said. “We got off to a good start and had them 2-20 odd before they got a partnership. “We then got another couple of wickets before a late partnership. “They kept wickets in the shed for the last 20 overs and attacked from the 60th over.” Despite Malvern attacking late, Geisler said he was happy with how the Lions finished off the innings. He said it was a good bowling and fielding effort in warm conditions. Brad Jones was the pick of the bowlers, taking 3-59 off 20 overs, including five maidens. Ash Sweet took the other wicket, bowling 10 maidens in his 19 overs. Geisler said the Lions were confident that they could get the runs this weekend. “We have to set ourselves up before tea and have wickets in the shed,” he said.

Flag defence off to a flier for the Bulls Bacchus Marsh’s premiership defence got off to the perfect start in the McIntyre Cup Premier firsts competition. Facing a Diggers Rest Bulla side that bolstered its batting in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association off season, the Bulls got the job done. The Bulls made 7-181 from their overs, with Daniel Lalor (57) and captain-coach James Lidgett (51) the keys to the innings. Darren Quarrell took three wickets for the Burras. The Bulls started well with the ball, with both openers gone before the total reached double figures. The Burras never recovered and were all out for 123. Upul Fernando top scored with 54, while Madushanka Ekanayaka and James Bailey took three wickets each for the Bulls. Romsey skittled Wallan in the Magpies return to the top grade. Romsey made 8-177 before bowling the Magpies out for 82. Sunbury United won the derby against Sunbury, while Gisborne had no trouble in beating Woodend. Woodend was bowled out for 84, which Gisborne made without losing a wicket.
