Skye a real high for Ryan Ryan’s one wish is for a dog – but not just any dog. The six-year-old from Hopetoun Park has autism and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. He was assigned an assistance dog a year ago through Amaze (formerly Autism Australia), naming the Labrador puppy Skye. Ryan has been visiting Skye regularly throughout her intensive year-long training in Melbourne, building a strong bond. But Ryan’s mum, Bec Taylor, will need to raise about $27,000 to cover training and
support costs before Skye will be able to join them. Ms Taylor said Skye would change the lives of her entire family. “Each dog is trained to specifically cater to the needs of each individual child,” she said. “It’s often hard for people to understand why someone might need a $27,000 dog. “Sometimes, going out with Ryan, it can be overwhelming because I have a child that responds differently to every little noise. It’s like a sensory overload for him. “Skye will be able to learn Ryan’s cues and … will be able to ensure that his episodes won’t

be as extreme. First and foremost, they are considered service dogs. “That means if Ryan gets lost or runs off, Skye will know how to track him. “They are trained to follow commands from parents, stop at doorways and resist the child moving away by using its weight to slow or stop the child.” Ryan’s community has thrown its support behind the family, with an online campaign raising more than $6000. The Bacchus Marsh Lions Club has also stepped up, raising money through a Bunnings sausage sizzle.
Ms Taylor said that she “couldn’t be more thankful for all the support” the community is offering. Lions club secretary Len Murfitt said the group was happy to lend a hand. “Bec came and spoke to a Lions meeting and explained the benefit that an assistance dog would be to Ryan and the family,” he said. “An autism assistance dog is an expensive project. Some of our members were aware of companion dogs, hearing assistance dogs and seeing eye dogs, all of which Lions Australia supports.” To donate: bit.ly/2KAR3Jl

Thieves leave sports in the dark By Esther Lauaki Football games at Arnolds Creek and Bridge Road recreation reserves were cancelled or relocated last week after thieves made off with copper electrical cabling for the second time in four weeks. The incidents were the latest in a spate of thefts that have swept Melton, throwing out scheduling of games and training sessions for dozens of sports teams. Last Wednesday’s under-9s games at Arnolds Creek Community Pavilion and Recreation
Reserve were cancelled and the Melton Centrals senior teams were forced to play away on Sunday because there was no power. Melton council has been working with police to investigate the thefts which have also occurred at MacPherson Park and Diggers Rest Recreation Reserve. Riddle District Football Netball League headquarters, based at the Arnolds Creek reserve, was relocated to another office in Ballarat for the second time this month. Operations manager Jordan Doyle said the thefts were frustrating.
“Club members had to make a mad rush down the clubrooms because they had food and drink in the fridges,” Mr Doyle said. “Council can only do their best to reconnect us as soon as possible but it’s frustrating for everyone,” Mr Doyle said. “We have no internet, no lights and no power to run fridges or anything in the canteen.” Melton council’s recreation and youth manager Troy Scoble said council was “deeply frustrated” that children were missing out on sporting activities because of the thefts. “Melton City Council is incredibly
disappointed by the recent spate of copper thefts at recreation reserves across Melton. “The Bridge Road Recreation Reserve is also out of action after it too was hit by copper thieves. Council is working with contractors to ensure the power to the facilities are restored quickly and disruption is minimised.” Replacement is estimated to take about seven to 10 days, depending on the damage caused during the theft. Anyone who witnesses suspicious activity is urged to call police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

CFA chief executive Paul Smith said he was impressed with the calibre of nominations. “The quality of all the entrants was outstanding and I’d like to particularly recognise the finalists whose fine work epitomises the values of this great organisation,” he said. The car manufacturer’s records show that Melton, Brimbank and Wyndham are among the Melbourne municipalities with the largest number of outstanding Honda vehicles that need their Takata airbag inflators replaced. There are still about 1500 vehicles in Caroline Springs, Albanvale, Kealba, Kings Park, St Albans, Hoppers Crossing, Tarneit, Truganina, Werribee, Derrimut and Point Cook that need work done. The Takata recall started in 2009 Company spokesman Neil McDonald said that many customers would have received at least one recall notification, while others may have received as many as five. “Honda Australia has sent as many as five Takata recall letters to affected owners as part of a range of outreach activities to notify customers,” Mr McDonald said. He said Honda attempted to contact owners by door-knocks as well as through Facebook, text messages and registered letter drops. While customers in Werribee, Werribee South, Derrimut and Point Cook had the best completion rate in the state, those suburbs still had about 450 customers still needing to have their vehicles repaired. Caroline Springs police clocked a driver speeding at 117km/h in a 60 kilometre zone along Taylors Road, Plumpton in the early hours of May 15. The car was stopped and impounded for 30 days at a cost of $878.50. The 24-year-old male driver from Keilor Downs will face court at a later date. In a separate incident, a 36-year-old man from Melton was found to be drink driving on Williams Street, Melton. He returned a blood alcohol reading of 0.07 when tested. Track plans rev up for Fiskville By Esther Lauaki Plans for a motor sport track at the former Fiskville CFA training site could be a step closer to getting off the ground if Moorabool council has anything to do with it. Remediation works at Fiskville are expected to be completed in the next two years and a proposal to turn it into a racing track has started to gain traction. Ballarat council and the state government spent $90,000 to develop a feasibility study for a regional racing precinct in 2015.
This month, Moorabool council set aside $100,000 in its 2018-19 draft budget for a business case for the site. The draft budget is out now for public feedback and is due to be adopted in June. Moorabool mayor Paul Tatchell said the council would chip in with Ballarat and Geelong councils, as well as the state and federal governments, to develop the business case. He expected it would cost about $400,000. “Every shire is facing the same problem with these [motor] sports which are difficult to host
in town,” he said. “I think we’d be in a position to make a play a month or two months out [from the state election], we just need more relevant data to take to the minister.” A plan has been formulated for a motor sport track but land was never formally identified for the project, Cr Tatchell said. In its feasibility study, Ballarat council found that the facility would need to be built outside of the municipality to accommodate the 240-300 hectares of land required. Fiskville was identified as a favourable location because it is government owned.
The state government has already spent $80 million to remediate the former training facility. Confederation of Australian Motor Sport chief executive Eugene Arocca said that the peak racing body would join the lobbying effort. “There’s no better start than identifying the land and by all accounts it’s a place that needs to be cleaned up,” Mr Arocca said. “I’m a little bit cautious as it’s the very first step in a long, long journey, but kudos to the council for taking that step.”
Wriggle room for pupils Worm juice is just one of the wonderful things that will come out of the Springside College gardening program this year. Two worm farms were donated to the school last week so pupils will be able to collect fertiliser for the garden, where year 3 and 4 pupils have been toiling away since earlier this year. Fruits and vegetables from the garden are harvested and sold as part of the school’s Spade and Spoon program. Springside College garden specialist Jayne Pizzo said the program provided pupils insight into food. “We have created our own kitchen and garden program where the students learn to produce organically grown produce,” Ms Pizzo said. “The students grow all the produce from seedlings. They then plant the seedlings in the vegetable garden beds and lovingly tend to
them. The produce from the garden is then used in the kitchen where students make delicious foods that are sold at our once monthly Spade and Spoon market.” Students had also built a greenhouse from recycled plastic bottles so seedlings will develop more efficiently, Ms Pizzo said. “The juice collected from the worm farms is an amazing fertiliser and will be used to fertilise our vegetable garden beds, olive grove and orchard,” she said. “Any excess worm juice will be sold at the Spade and Spoon market. Drawing on experience Hundreds of works will fill the Bacchus Marsh Public Hall for Rotary’s upcoming art show. Now in its 48th year, the art show is the club’s major annual fundraiser held over Queen’s Birthday weekend. Organising committee secretary Davina Cabrie said the event has developed a considerable following over the years. “It’s about showcasing and encouraging the work of local and national artists but, more importantly, the show supports and helps to fund the Rotary of Bacchus Marsh projects,” Ms Cabrie said. “Locally, we run breakfast clubs in schools
twice a week and we also have the Let’s Read program to encourage a culture of reading in young children.” Other Rotary projects funded by the art show include working with the CFA to replace smoke alarm batteries at the homes of elderly residents, youth exchange and leadership programs. Pay error has school in hot water By Alesha Capone A swimming school franchise business that operates across Melbourne, including in the western suburbs, has apologised for underpaying 1308 staff. Paul Sadler Swimland Pty Ltd has issued a public notice saying it has agreed to be supervised by the Fair Work Ombudsman (FWO) for two years.
The notice says the swimming school franchisees had contravened the Fair Work Act from July, 2010, to March, 2016. They included those in Bacchus Marsh, Braybrook, Essendon, Hoppers Crossing and Melton, and USAust Management Services Pty Ltd, trading as Paul Sadler Swimland Taylors Lakes Pty Ltd. The schools failed to pay the minimum wages to adult and junior employees and minimum
rates set out in enterprise agreements. The workers were underpaid a combined total of more than $1.42 million. As a result, the franchisees have committed to an enforceable agreement with the FWO, which will include a future audit to ensure they are complying with all federal workplace laws. Paul Sadler Swimland Pty Ltd will donate $25,000 to the Smith Family and $25,000 to Western Chances.
In a statement, the company said that in late 2015, it was made aware of an error with staff payments. The business conducted an audit of its manual payroll systems and confirmed that a number of employees had been “unintentionally underpaid”. The statement said that the company had worked throughout 2016 to ensure employees were repaid any money owed to them and had also written to all former employees who were owed money.

The couple moved to Australia in January from New Zealand, joining the Truganina Rabbitohs. Luciia and Shawna were able to travel to Sydney with the state team thanks to a Melton council residents achievement donation of $500 each. “It was really hard for us to get to Sydney because Shawna is the only one working at the moment and I am still looking for work,” Luciia said. “We always seem to make it into state or national teams together and it becomes quite expensive. I love this game and, for us, league is life.” Luciia and Shawna are no strangers to playing top-tier sport, having both played rugby league for New Zealand.
“I’ve played for the past six years,” Luciia said. “It was my older sister that played first and she’d always beg me to play. I wanted to stick to rugby union and netball. But one day, after four years of her asking, I finally decided to attend a training. “I loved it and ended up in the starting line-up on my first week.” The Victorian women’s rugby league team will be play the curtain-raiser when the Melbourne Storm faces the Cronulla Sharks in the NRL on Sunday, August 12, at AAMI Park. Green light for female signs By Tate Papworth Female pedestrian symbols could soon become the norm in the west. The Brimbank council passed a motion during its May meeting to advocate for female symbols to be used for pedestrian signals on new and replaced traffic lights throughout the municipality. The motion comes following a push by the Albion Action Group to have female symbols included at the proposed lights at the Perth
Avenue-Ballarat Road intersection in Albion. Cr Victoria Borg introduced the motion and said it was an important step in achieving gender equality. “The importance of gender equality in society is highly recognised by all three levels of government,” she said. “We have come a long way since the middle of the 20th century. The road has been rough and still is quite bumpy. “The community and city of Brimbank
made quite the statement when seven female councillors were elected in 2017. We now have the opportunity to make another statement by supporting this motion.” Cr Daniel Allan was the only councillor to vote against the motion. “In terms of gender equality, there’s no argument here. The facts surrounding the gender gap are well understood,” he said. “But advocating to have these female crossing
lights is something I think is very gimmicky, tokenistic and I don’t think there’s any lasting economic benefit to them. “At other crossings like children’s crossings where you see a female holding a child’s hand, you don’t look at it and think fathers are excluded.” Councillors also flagged concerns about associated costs to installing new symbols, however traffic lights fall under VicRoads’ umbrella, meaning any cost is unlikely to fall to the council.
All in favour of flavour A pop up food and entertainment market has landed at Water Gardens Town Centre. The Flavour Institute will be at the shopping centre for the next six months, allowing shoppers to experience pop-up food brands. In addition to the food, shoppers will be able to hone their cooking skills in workshops and try their hand at activities such as lawn bowls. Flavour Institute state manager Belinda Burrows said there’s something for everyone. “There’s great food, decent coffee. It’s just a great all-round experience,” she said. “You could come here with your grandmother or a new-born child, there’s always something going on. “Every Thursday-Friday we’ll have cooking master classes and there will also be a kids cafe with projectors and a Playstation.” With more than 10 vendors at the site, a variety of food options from burgers, desserts, chicken, Mexican and Sri Lankan are available.

A big thank you to our volunteers Melton City Council is saying thank you to all community volunteers this National Volunteer Week. National Volunteer Week, between 21-27 May, is an annual celebration which acknowledges the generous contribution of volunteers around the country. This week’s theme is Give a little. Change a lot which illustrates exactly how helping out in small ways could make big differences to the lives of others. At Melton City Council, there are more than 150 registered volunteers which support the delivery of Council services. These include volunteers who work at the Melton Visitor Information Centre, Neighbourhood Houses, youth services, social support groups, food services, Men’s Sheds and the Volunteer Transport Program. They are part of more than 6 million people arcross the country who
volunteer their time. National Volunteer Week is the perfect opportunity to reach out to all volunteers to say thank you. The success of Council’s volunteer program can be directly attributed to the hard work, dedication, determination and creativity they have shown. Council values the skills, knowledge, time and commitment volunteers bring to their roles. They all give up so much of their time to do their bit in the community. Volunteering is incredibly rewarding, and Council is encouraging everyone to consider getting involved, even in small ways.

I’ve long-been a strong supporter and advocate for volunteering, and as a volunteer myself, understand the valuable contribution these people make to our community by helping others, and sharing their time, knowledge and passion. This year, Council is celebrating National Volunteer Week (21—27 May) by acknowledging the 150 registered volunteers who give of themselves so freely and willingly to our community. These are everyday people who have taken up the challenge to create a positive impact in the lives of others, and I would personally like to thank each and every one of them for making the City of Melton a great place it live, work and raise a family. On Thursday, I’ll be attending the 2018 Sons of the West graduation ceremony; the fifth year this outstanding program has been run in our City. As a Sons of the West graduate, I know firsthand the true value of participating in a program that is committed to supporting men’s health, and celebrating social connectedness and healthy lifestyles.

Family violence is devastating; with one woman murdered by her current or former partner each week in Australia. There are also links between family violence and homelessness, mental health issues, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and substance abuse. I have advocated for Council to write to the Minister for Family Violence to discuss the possibility of establishing a family violence hub in our City, including a list of Council-owned properties that might be suited to the project. In April, I also advocated for a report into Council involvement in promoting gender equity to prevent violence against women, and for more resources to be allocated to response and early intervention
services as a way of addressing family violence. In a few weeks, Council will launch Equality and Respect 2030: A Strategy to prevent violence against women by promoting gender equity in the City of Melton, one of my Councillor initiatives that outlines how Council will work towards achieving gender equality in our community over the next 12 years. This Strategy closely aligns with the City of Melton Preventing Family Violence Advisory Committee, also my initiative, and was developed in consultation with more than 100 community members, echoing the municipality-wide sentiment that family violence is not tolerated in our community. I had been living in the inner west of Melbourne and decided to move out of the city. Bacchus Marsh had a rural feel to it and was convenient for work and to the city. How long have you lived in the area? I have lived in Bacchus Marsh for 25 years.
My family I am most passionate about. I want to make sure that they have a good start in life. What is your role in the Bacchus Marsh Men’s Shed? I joined the Bacchus Marsh Men’s shed in 2013 and I am the president at the moment. We are renovating the old stables, in partnership with the Bacchus Marsh community college, to be a workshop for the men’s shed and a classroom for the college. I worked as a maintenance fitter for Victoria Railways for nearly 30 years and enjoyed the job, but I have no interest in trains whatsoever. People hear I worked for the railways and straight away think that I am interested in trains.

“RIDERS WITHOUT HORSES” PROGRAM The Pony Club mission statement is
“to be the leading youth organisation promoting through the love of horses, the highest standards of horsemanship, riding skills and personal development” Starting out in the equine world can be a daunting experience for families who find they have a child who wants to pursue horse riding as a hobby Our “Riders Without Horses” (RWH) Program aims to help aspiring riders (and their families) to get started on their equine adventure. By joining Melton & District Pony Club’s RWH program, new families will be able to tap into the Pony Club community which has a range of benefits from making new friends to gaining advice and knowledge. The RWH program runs for 12 months for children aged 8 years and up. During this time participants will ride (depending on availability of horses) as well as learn about horse care and management -something which can help set up families when purchasing or leasing their first horse. Members will finish the year with their D and D* Pony Club Certificates. This program runs for from the 1st July 2018 to 2nd of June 2019 and takes place on the first Sunday of each month starting at 10 AM. Council has prepared an updated Municipal Strategic Statement (MSS) to guide future land use and development in the City of Melton. The MSS provides the basis for land use controls within the Melton Planning Scheme and supports and implements the State Planning Policy Framework. Council consulted with the wider community in 2016/17 during the development of the Council & Wellbeing Plan and the Community Vision. The outcomes, and how they relate to land use planning and development issues, have helped inform the updated MSS. Learn how to stamp your style on a rental property and keep your bond When you move into a rental place, it’s normal to want to make it your own by hanging pictures or even painting an accent wall, writes Kathleen Kinney for Domain. But when you’re renting you must remember: Any changes you make may need to be reversed once you move out – and landlords are entirely within their rights to use your money to do it. But all is not lost. Sometimes, modifications can be made with the owner’s approval. In fact, sometimes they’ll help out with costs. Just make sure you’re 100 per cent clear about the stipulations of your lease, and that you have fully informed the landlord before you pick up a paintbrush or hammer. Communication is the key. Painting There’s an excitement with moving into a new home. And, to many, that means breaking out the paint. Experience has shown that it’s not always the colour (although that’s important, too) but the skill that’s the sticking point. “I’ve had tenants get paint on the ceiling, on the trim, on the doorknobs and outlets”, says Richard, a landlord of three properties. “I even had one tenant who painted around the pictures they’d hung on the wall, and around the furniture that was placed up against the wall.” Hanging pictures Filling in holes in the wall is one of the most common issues landlords have to deal with after a tenant moves out. “Everyone likes to put up pictures, and fortunately there are less destructive hanging methods, which is great,” says Richard. “But not everyone sees the benefit of Blu-Tack over thumb tacks.”

Installing window treatments Those cheap vertical blinds are so ugly. Your impulse to put up a curtain rod or roman shades is completely normal. But the holes you have to drill into the wall to mount window treatments will require patching once you move out. Landlords
fume every time they see big screw marks around the window frame. Gardening You would think that planting a few tulips would delight a landlord. But that’s not necessarily the case.
“As a landlord, I want the most maintenance-free rental as possible,” says Richard. “I pay for a basic lawn-mowing service, but I do not want to keep up a garden.” Pots and planters are the best bet if you’re renting.

The Western Region Football League battled all afternoon in the WorkSafe AFL Victoria Community Championships. Travelling to face the Ovens and Murray, the WRFL side was never in the contest, losing 21.14 (140)-9.10 (64). Daniel Schibeci and Ben Said kicked two goals apiece for the WRFL, with Nick Buykx awarded the WRFL’s best-on-ground medal. There was better news for the under-18 side, which defeated Ovens and Murray, 11.5 (71)-7.13 (55).
By Tara Murray Melton Phoenix’s good recent form has finally transpired into a win in FFV against Melbourne Lions in state league 5 west. After a slow start, the Phoenix have taken it up to some of the higher sides before a bye last week. The week off didn’t halt their momentum, as they produced one of their best performances of the season. The Phoenix had a two-goal lead at half-time, before the Lions scored their first to reduce the margin to one goal. After a few scares, the Phoenix got back on track and scored twice to get the much-needed win, 4-1. Jason Hill continued his good form, scoring a hat-trick. Seventeen-year-old Andrew Robortella scored his first goal at senior level. The win is the Phoenix’s second and moves them to 10th on the ladder, ahead of hosting Keilor Wolves on Saturday under lights. Westside Strikers returned to the top of the table with a 4-0 win against Keilor Wolves. Josh D’Alessi scored twice, while Sam Orchard and Jordan Borg scored once. The win moves the Strikers one point ahead of Gisborne which had a bye. In state league 4 west, Spring Hills lost its first game of the season. Travelling up the coast to take on Bell Park, the Stallions lost 1-0. The loss means the Stallions slip further behind the top side and are now sitting fifth, 10 points behind the top side.
TAC Cup
The Western Jets had a strong start-to-finish win against Oakleigh Chargers in the TAC Cup on Sunday. The Jets took the lead early in the first quarter and stayed in front for the rest of the game, winning 12.8 (80)-9.7 (61). Four Jets players kicked two goals apiece. The win moves the Jets into the top four for the first time since 2014.

SPORT Centrals cop the loss – and look for lessons Melton Centrals got a good indication of where they sit in the AFL Goldfields Women’s competition when they took on second-placed East Point on Sunday. For Centrals, who went into the match 2-1, it proved to be a tough day. They went scoreless in the first three quarters in the 8.12 (60)-1.1 (7) loss. Speaking before the match, Centrals coach Stephen Holmes said he expected the East Point game to give them plenty of things to work on. “I think we have improved out of sight, everyone is committed as a team now,” he said. “East Point is sitting second on the ladder and we are fourth, so it’s a good opportunity to have a good look to see where we are able to improve.”
Holmes said he had been thrilled with the start to the season, especially considering the side struggled for numbers for much of the pre-season. He said having enough players for a bench had been fantastic and allowed the side to run rotations. “We have between 20 and 30 registered players now,” he said. “That gives us the use of the interchanges … we can always have more though.” Holmes, in his first season as coach, said he was enjoying what he said was a big learning curve. “I’ve played footy all my life,” he said. “My daughter plays at the club and I saw they were after a coach.
“I thought I might give it a crack as I thought I had a lot to offer.” Holmes said he had seen a lot of improvement in the players across the board, with Alanna Porter leading from the front. “She does everything on the field and beyond it, does a lot of work for the club,” he said. “She’s an exceptional leader and always on the ball.” He said Alaynna Neve, Sarah Simmons, Linda Morren and Tara McKean were some of the experienced players who had stepped up on the field, while Kyllie Garrett was doing a mountain of work off the field as well. Of the younger players, Janelle Porter, in her first year, was impressing. Holmes said the side had set no expectations for this season.
Shock win for Melton By Tara Murray Melton Thoroughbreds pulled off the upset of the Big V men’s division 2 season so far, knocking off ladder leaders Camberwell Dragons on Saturday night. It was a case of eighth versus first, but it meant little on the court as the Thoroughbreds produced their best performance of the season. After a close first half, the Thoroughbreds turned it up in the third quarter, outscoring the Dragons 23-12 for a 15-point lead heading into the final quarter. There was no last quarter come back from the Dragons and the Thoroughbreds won 82-68. Four of the Thoroughbreds’ starting five scored double figures and Emmanuel Malou had a double-double. Dexter Graham had 18 points, along with five rebounds,three assists and four steals. Speaking before the game, coach Joe Hooks said he always expected this team to take some time to fit together. Just one member of last year’s team remains, captain Jordan Kirk. Kooks said they had been keen to show how far they had improved this season against the Dragons. “We’ve finally got all our team and we’re making some progress,” he said. “We’ve had players coming in late with transfers from other teams and returning from overseas. “We knew once we got the team together, it would take time to gel. “That’s the real reason for the slow start.” The win moves the Thoroughbreds to a 5-5 record, after losing their first four matches. Kooks said he could not be prouder of how his team has played this season. “If we had all our players all season, who knows where we would have been?” he said. “We are taking it day by day and game by game. “This is a team that fights, win or loss they are going to play hard and see what happens. “That’s all you can ask from them.” He highlighted the performances of leading scorer Malou, import Graham and Maluk Adut as players who were starting to show what they can do. Despite going on a 5-1 run, Hooks knows there will still be some ups and downs with such a new side. “It’ll be a roller coaster, but it’s about how you handle the downs. “We’re not going to be over confident and we’re going to continue to push every day.” On Sunday, the Thoroughbreds women lost to Blackburn Vikings 60-48. A strong third quarter by the Vikings was the difference. The ladder-leading youth league men Thoroughbreds had another good win, defeating Latrobe City Energy 107-83. “I just want to do better than last year,” he said. “It’s a learning season for me and if we make finals that’s fantastic.” In other results, Darley lost to Ballarat 8.11 (59)-2.5 (17). Bacchus Marsh won a thriller against Lake Wendouree. The Cobras started the better of the two teams and led by 13 points at half-time. The Lakers reduced the margin to two points at the last change. Hillside succumbs to Airport West Hillside has lost a second straight match in Essendon District Football League division 1. The undermanned Sharks faced a big task – taking on undefeated Airport West. The Sharks were up for it in the first half and trailed by just 17 points at the main break. The Eagles broke the game open in the third quarter, kicking 4.12 to three goals to lead by 35 points at the last change. Both sides had plenty of chances in the last quarter, but the players didn’t have their kicking boots on. It didn’t matter, with the Eagles already having a match-winning lead. They eventually won 18.25 (133)-14.7 (91). Mitchell Church scored five goals for the Sharks, but was more than matched at the other end, with Tyson Young kicking eight goals for the Eagles. Thomas Drake and Church were named the best for the Eagles. The result means the Sharks sit outside the top four after six rounds. Craigieburn and Taylors Lakes moved above them with wins at the weekend. Tullamarine was the other winner. In division 2, Burnside Heights was left to rue a poor first quarter against the Northern Saints. The Saints opened up a 32-point lead by quarter-time after kicking six goals to one. The Bears closed the gap to 21 points at half-time, before the Saints got the margin back out to 48 points at the last change. The Bears had their best quarter in the last, but it wasn’t enough. They lost 16.11 (107)-13.3 (81). For the Saints, Khodr Taleb and Rocky Ferraro kicked eight and seven goals respectively. The result leaves the Bears sitting in sixth spot, a game behind the fourth-placed Saints after playing every team once. East Sunbury and Moonee Valley were the other winners. The Bears have a bye this weekend. The Bears women’s side remains undefeated after a big win against Keilor Park. Hillside’s two-game winning streak came to an end with a loss to the Sunbury Kangaroos on Friday night.

Riddell league’s players overcome a determined CHFL The Riddell District Football League just held off the Central Highlands Football League in a tight WorkSafe AFL Victoria Community Championships match on Saturday. The RDFL side travelled to Ballarat for the match and came home with the silverware, but they didn’t have it all their own way, with the CHFL fighting all the way and the game going down to the final whistle. Despite being outscored in the final quarter, the RDFL held on to win 9.13 (67)-9.10 (64). RDFL coach Arron Bray said he was confident that his side could get the job done. Several players picked in the original squad pulled out, with the league having to add players.
“They bought in 100 per cent and I’m always confident with the calibre of players in the league,” Bray said. The RDFL has played in several close interleague matches in recent years and Saturday was no different. Bray said his players had chances to break the game open, but the CHFL kept coming. “I thought we had the ascendency early on, but we couldn’t get a break on them,” Bray said. “They came back at us and led by eight points at half-time. “We put it on the midfielders at half-time and we took the game to another level in third. “We didn’t put enough scoreboard pressure on, but slowly took it away from them.”
With plenty of onballers in the squad, the RDFL had the legs to ensure the win. Bray said the one concern about their side was the lack of key forwards. Rupertswood’s Todd Podolczak was the only notable goalkicker in the team and the only player from the league’s top 10 goalkickers included. Bray need not have worried – Podolczak kicked six goals and was awarded the best-on-ground medal. “We gave him the 50 to play in with plenty of space,” Bray said. “We kept saying to him to lead up, as ‘Gunna’ [full-back Mark Gunnell] wouldn’t be able to go with him.
“He’s pretty quick across the ground and there’s not many defenders his height who can stay with him.” The other standouts for the RDFL were Tom Waters, Ayden Tessari, Brent Swallow and Shaun Stewart. Bray said that every player did the job they were assigned. It was the third straight year in which the CHFL has lost its interleague match by less than a goal. Gutsy BFL fades at last By Tara Murray The Ballarat Football League players ran out of legs against Goulburn Valley Football League in the WorkSafe AFL Victoria Community Championships on Saturday. The game, one of the marquee games of the championships, was played on the MCG, with the crowd presented with a high-quality, high-scoring encounter. The BFL looked to have control on several occasions, before the GVFL responded late in each quarter. No more than three goals separated the two teams during the first three quarters. The GVFL found another level in the last quarter, with Brandyn Grenfell providing a target up forward. The GVFL side kicked seven final-term goals to win 20.8 (128)-16.10 (106). BFL coach Shaun O’Loughlin said his side played well for most of the game and it was only the final five minutes that the game slipped away. “It wasn’t through a lack of effort from our boys,” he said.
“We had as much of the footy as they did … we had our chances, we used the ball pretty well and defended pretty well in the second half to keep ourselves in the game.” Bacchus Marsh forward Ben Speight was named the BFL’s best in the loss. He kicked eight goals. Speight, who is in his first year at the Cobras, had previously played on the MCG. “I played Foxtel Cup with VFL, which was a great opportunity, but I never thought I’d get another opportunity to be back out there again,” he said after the match. “I was a bit lucky it went my way and I was really happy with my efforts, but it was unlucky for the team.” Speight said he relished the opportunity to play interleague. “It’s the best players in the competition and the best in the GVFL. “To have that opportunity that most of the leagues in the state buy into … I think it’s fantastic.” Speight was named in the BFL’s best, along with Brian Graham, Steven Kennedy, Tony Lockyer and Grant Valles.
Valles, the Sunbury Lions’ utility, represented the league in 2016 against the Western Region Football League, but said it was a different feeling this year because the MCG was the venue. “It was a fantastic experience,” he said. “Every boy dreams of playing on the MCG. While it wasn’t the result we wanted, it will definitely be one to put in the memories. “Everyone was up and about for this one a little bit more than usual. Shaun [O’Loughlin] came in with a great game plan, but unfortunately it didn’t come off in the end.” Valles, who has been the hero for the Lions in front of goal this season, took to the other end of the field for the BFL. “I’ve played back all my life, so it wasn’t too bad,” he said. “It’s good to be able to play both positions. I started OK, but there’s probably some things I still need to work on. But overall, I was pretty happy to slot in the back line.” Valles said he would love to play for the league again, and hopefully get a win next time. “It was fantastic to get back in the squad with high-quality individuals,” he said. “You learn so much.”
The Riddell District Netball League overcame a slow start to take out a second straight win in the WorkSafe AFL Victoria Community Championships, beating Central Highlands Netball League on Saturday. It wasn’t the start the RDNL was after and it found itself trailing by 10 goals early against a side that was well drilled. The RDNL made changes across the court and slowly worked itself into the game and in front. Once in front in the last quarter, the RDNL stayed there, winning 45-43. RDNL coach Ciara Stewart said it was obvious that the CHNL had spent a bit of time training together. She said her side was stoked with the win. “They have been training together twice a week for four weeks and knew how to play each other,” Stewart said. “We had seven good players individually on the court, but it took us a long time to play with each other.” Stewart, who also took on playing duties when Chloe Wilson had to withdraw, said once they got the right combinations and figured out each others’ games, they were fine. One change was the move of Stewart into goals at quarter-time to give the side a moving goal circle. “They had a goal keeper that is taller than any player in our league,” Stewart said. “We needed a quick moving circle, so Bec [Morabito] and I played together as two short goalers. “We did a lot of passing off and protecting to get some good shots.” Another major move was the change-up of the mid court in the middle of the game, which happened when Chelsea Kemp went off injured. Stewart said they had been talking about making a switch before Kemp hyper extended her knee. The injury meant Caitlyn Alifraco went into wing attack, Karlee De Bono into centre and Anica Scherer into wing defence. Bec Morabito was awarded the best on court medal for the RDNL, shooting 31 goals for the game. “It would have been super hard to pick someone from our team, as no one stood out. Everyone played their role, but no one was awesome. “Bec shot 90 per cent of our goals, so she deserved it.” The RDNL’s under-17 team also defeated CHNL, winning 36-22.
