Tee off for Matty By Esther Lauaki A freak accident in the first game of the 2015 rugby season changed Maciu Vosa’s life forever. Matty, as he is affectionately known, broke his neck when he was crushed under the weight of his teammates and opponents, leaving him a C4 quadriplegic. The father of two has no feeling from his upper chest down, but has some limited movement in his arms. His around-the-clock care is administered by his wife, Kylie, and two carers. A support group, which includes Matty’s teammates from Box Hill Rugby Union Club, has been raising money to support the Vosa family since the accident.

Its Eynesbury celebrity golf day, now in its second year, will be held on Friday, May 18, to raise money for renovations to make the family’s Hoppers Crossing home more wheelchair-friendly. This year’s guests will include rugby personalities George Gregan, Rod Kafer and Sean Maloney. Money raised by the golf day will bridge the gap of $150,000 needed for renovations to allow Matty to manoeuvre around the house. Mrs Vosa said Matty and the entire family were overwhelmed by the support. “We’re so appreciative of all the support since the very beginning,” she told Star Weekly. “We have received a lot of support and love from the club and the whole rugby family. “The celebrity golf day event should be another fun day – we had a blast last year.” Accessibility at home is a daily struggle for Matty. Mrs Vosa said bathing and dressing was a two-and-a-half-hour daily process, and the two carers were also required for bedtime routines and other activities during the day. The “lifetime management system” of special equipment and strategies will continue to evolve according to Matty’s needs. “We modified the master bedroom and turned the en suite into a large wet room so that we could fit Matty’s chair in there and all of the machinery that he needs,” Mrs Vosa said. “We’ve done one room, but the house isn’t really wheelchair-friendly.” To register: 4mattyv@gmail.com

Fresh mosque bid put on hold By Esther Lauaki A new planning application for a proposed mosque in Melton West has stumbled, with the council seeking more information and expert consultation. Councillors unanimously voted to defer a decision on the application for four months until soil testing could be completed to determine the land’s viability for development. A planning permit for the mosque, which was never used, expired last year and a new application was tabled at last week’s meeting.
More than a dozen protesters rallied with placards and a sound system outside Melton council chambers before the April 30 meeting with police officers standing by to keep the peace. Nearly 200 objections were received by council against the new application for a “place of worship” at 171-197 Harkness Road. The planned mosque has been a centre of controversy for a number of years, sparking clashes between police and protesters in 2015. Cr Ken Hardy said the suitability of the land for development needed to be explored
further, citing a state government report from the mid-1980s that said soil at a nearby site had “serious limitations which would require expensive engineering solutions”. “The difficulty we have now, is determining the suitability of this land to build on,” he said. “We need expert advice to give us that information.” Council planning services manager Bob Baggio said he was aware of the report, by the Urban Land Authority and commissioned for a residential development in Harkness Road. “The report concluded that there were a
number of issues which ultimately meant that the land was not developed for residential purposes,” Mr Baggio said. “There were also no services, no water, sewage or gas and it did highlight that the soils in that area were quite volatile, which is quite normal throughout our municipality.” Objectors applauded council’s deferral of a decision. Their concerns include hours of operation, traffic, noise and visual impacts. The new application specifies that no more than 60 people would be present at the site at any one time.

Police are concerned about the high number of Melton road users testing positive for drugs following two major traffic operations. Operation Amber, targeting drink driving, and Operation Shine, targeting motorcyclists, were conducted across the Melton police service area between December and May. Officers caught 11 drink drivers exceeding the alcohol limit of .05, 11 tested positive for illicit drugs, 12 were caught speeding and 17 disqualified or unlicenced during Operation Amber. Only one motorcyclist was caught over the alcohol limit during Operation Shine, but 22 motorcyclists tested positive to illicit drugs. Melton Highway Patrol Sergeant Chris Stuhldreier said the results from both operations were “alarming”. “We’re still getting a high detection of a number of offences,” Sergeant Stuhldreier said. “What is particularly alarming is that we’re getting a high detection of drug-affected drivers. “It not only puts their own lives in danger but the lives of the rest of the public and road users in danger as well. “Driving while under the influence of drink and or drugs is never a good mix.” Operation Shine also detected 49 speeding motorcyclists, nine disqualified, 17 unlicenced and 21 unregistered. Sergeant Stuhldreier said it was pleasing to see road trauma statistics for the Melton service area on a downward trend between January and May.

Thieves crush camp plan By Esther Lauaki
Revamped village gets a new owner The Village Bacchus Marsh shopping centre has been sold to Australian company DeGroup for $61 million. The Village was recently put up for sale following a major refurbishment. The single-level, 16,000-square-metre centre was sold by Abacus Property Group, which bought it in July, 2013. It has more than 60 businesses, including Coles, Aldi, Target, Kaisercraft, The Reject Shop, Anytime Fitness, Nova Pharmacy and The Elms Medical Centre. DeGroup chairman Colin DeLutis, a former Carlton Football Club vice-president, said he was looking forward to connecting with the local community. “We’re going to give locals a clean, safe and convenient place where they can grab their everyday essentials and catch up with friends and family without having to travel all the way to Melton,” he said. Mr DeLutis purchased Sanctuary Lakes Shopping Centre in Point Cook in 2016 and later bought Somerville Central shopping centre on the Mornington Peninsula. Settlement on the 4.39-hectare central township site at Bacchus Marsh is scheduled for the end of July.

Members of the 3rd Melton Scout Group face missing out on the national Jamboree next year after aluminium cans the group had collected to raise money were stolen. Group leader Trevor King (pictured) said the Scouts had spent the past three months collecting cans to recycle as part of its major fundraising efforts. But late last month about 1000 kilograms of cans, and the storage cage they were kept in outside Woodgrove Shopping Centre, were stolen. Mr King said the cans would have fetched about $1000 through scrap metal merchants. “We filled the cage up on Saturday [April 21] and as far as we know it was still there on the Monday afternoon,” he said. “When we went out there on Tuesday, I thought that the merchants had been by to collect the full cage and neglected to replace it with a new empty cage. “We later realised that the cans had been stolen.” Mr King said the theft would leave the Scout group’s budget short for next year’s Jamboree in South Australia. “It helps out the kids that are going. It cost $1600 per child and many families are unable to pay that amount,” he said. “If we can’t get enough money in the meantime … it might mean that some of them don’t get to go. “I don’t think we’ll ever see them [the cans] again but if anyone has any information we urge them to contact Melton police.” The 3rd Melton Scout Group meets at the Scout hall on the corner of Smith and Henry streets. Joeys meet on Tuesdays at 5.30pm, Cubs on Tuesdays from 7pm and Scouts, Thursdays at 6.30pm.

Budget fail for new Lara jail By Esther Lauaki A case of mistaken location had residents and politicians last week believing that a new maximum security prison was planned for Bacchus Marsh. In the 2018-19 Victoria Budget papers, released on Tuesday, the state’s recently announced $689.5 million plans to build a new 700-bed, maximum-security men’s prison at the Lara Prison Precinct was listed as being in Bacchus Marsh for completion by 2021-22. Opposition MP Edward O’Donohue promptly called for the premier’s office “to come clean” on whether it was an error in the official document or whether Bacchus Marsh would be home to the new prison. By Wednesday afternoon, a Stop the Bacchus Marsh Prison lobby group had created a Facebook page attracting nearly 100 members. “Despite spending months claiming that Lara would be home of the new prison, the State Budget clearly states that the town of Bacchus Marsh has been chosen,” Mr O’Donohue said. “As if the Melton electorate hasn’t had enough.” A government spokesperson confirmed to Star Weekly an error was made and that while the precinct borders Bacchus Marsh Road, it is not in Bacchus Marsh and the planned expansion would be in Lara. “These are Liberal lies designed to strike up fear in the community – they know that the Lara prison will be built in Lara,” the spokesperson said. The Lara Prison Precinct expansion is planned to be around double the size of nearby Barwon Prison. Corrections minister Gayle Tierney said that building the new Lara prison was part of the government’s “tough new sentencing laws”.
A step in the right direction Melton Primary School pupils will be walking on the safe side to school next week as part of a national road safety and health campaign. The annual Walk Safely to School Day, on May 18, encourages primary school children, their parents and carers to walk and commute regularly and safely to school. The program promotes road safety, health and the environment and aims to curb the decline in walking and/or taking public transport to school. Melton Primary School principal Vanessa Harris said that the school encourages its pupils to walk to school every day. “Walking to school with a parent is something that we’ve encouraged for a long time because it helps to promote a healthy lifestyle and get the children outside and involved in the school community,” Ms Harris said. “It also helps with traffic congestion around the school. If parents can’t walk all the way, we encourage driving part of the way and walk the rest.” Primary school pupils around the country will be participating in the Walk Safely to School day by wearing stickers and promoting the event in their communities. Ballarat line revamp on track The $518 million investment in the Ballarat line is being championed as the biggest upgrade in its 137-year history. Esther Lauaki takes a closer look at the project as it picks up traction. It takes serious people power and heavy machinery to keep construction on the Ballarat line upgrade moving. During a four-day line closure last month, 250 people worked night and day shifts across four sites along the 75-kilometre stretch of line from Caroline Springs to Millbrook. They operated 26 excavators, two high-rail trucks, three cranes, a drill rig, a 43.5-tonne tamping machine, light towers and a fleet of tipper trucks, scrubber trucks, vacuum trucks and water carts around the clock. Stage one of the project, which is now under way, includes 18 kilometres of track duplication between Deer Park west and Melton. Passing loops at Ballan and Millbrook will provide more options for trains to pass each other, allowing more frequent services and helping services recover faster from unexpected delays. Rockbank station will be rebuilt, with Ballan and Bacchus Marsh stations receiving upgrades. More carparking, additional platforms and landscaping will be added to all three stations, meaning better accessibility and improved security. A new station at Toolern will cater to the growing population in the Melton area. The line upgrade will allow for extra services during peak times and for trains every 40 minutes in off-peak periods. Regional Rail Revival director Mark Havryluk said the project was on track for completion by the end of 2019. “We made significant progress while the line was closed for four days and the effort behind

this was impressive,” Mr Havryluk told Star Weekly Weekly. “Around 250 people worked around the clock over the four days to complete critical work such as piling, earthworks and installing safety fences.
“The installation of safety fencing as part of the Ballarat line upgrade means much of the construction can be completed while trains are running … this will significantly reduce the number of times the line will require closing, minimising disruption for passengers.
“A project of this size will require the train line to be closed from time to time.” The Ballarat Line upgrade is being delivered by a consortium comprising Lendlease, Coleman Rail and SMEC in partnership with Rail Projects Victoria and V/Line.

For a couple of years I have been advocating for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags to be hung up alongside the Australian flag in the Melton Indoor Rec Centre Court 1, With Melton Basketball Association. This is where my husband and I and children attend almost every week for basketball … for the Knights or for Melton Thoroughbreds and Melton Youth League. Faatasi and I acquired the flags and they were handed over to the president of Melton Basketball Association with an acknowledgement of country earlier this month to be hung.
I grew up in Rockbank and attended Melton Secondary College between 1990 and 1995. My children attend school in Melton and play their sports here. Basketball, football and soccer. I also work at Goodstart Early Learning Melton - Centenary Avenue. How long have you lived in the area? I lived in Melton from 1997 to 2016. I now reside in Hillside.
What would people be surprised to know about you?
What are you passionate about? I am passionate about human rights and social justice. I’m also passionate about everyone having a fair go and respect for each other.
That I am a big kid at heart and love the Hulk and Harry Potter. My 40th birthday cake last year was three tiers and were Batman, Wolverine and an awesome Hulk fist on top!
What was the best thing about living in Melton/Moorabool?
Tell me about your involvement in the community. I have worked at Wedge Park Primary School, Kurunjang After School Care, I’ve been on the parent committee for Melton Primary School and was a member for Melton Knights Basketball Club. For the council and community to celebrate the diverse cultures who live here in the area. I’d love a festival showcasing the variety of foods, clothing, music dance, art. To bring the community together to learn about each others cultures and more concerning awareness and acceptance of each other. An aboriginal playground with lots of art work around and cut-outs of Australian animals and their tracks and traditional Woiwurrung names.

Melton City Council Careers Expo Thinking about what career path you want to take can be difficult and daunting. Whether it’s school leavers, or established adults wanting a career change, knowing what steps to take can be overwhelming. Melton City Council is hosting the annual Careers Expo to help residents find the path to their perfect career. The free Melton City Council Careers Expo will be held at TabCorp Park, Cobblebank, between 9.15am and 2.30pm, on Tuesday 29 May. The expo has been specifically designed to assist both young people attending local secondary schools, and the general public, with providing options for employment

Last week, Melton City Council welcomed a number of items in the 2018/19 State Budget. We were pleased to see the commitment of an additional $50 million to the Growing Suburbs Fund, from which the City of Melton has significantly benefited in the past three years, and the commitment to free TAFE education, which removes a significant financial barrier for many residents wanting to access tertiary education. Council was also pleased to hear that $5.6 million was commitment to build Burnside primary school, and $4.43 million was allocated for upgrades to Melton West Primary School. While there were no significant funding announcements for the City of Melton, Council will continue to work with the State Government to ensure that key priorities for our growing community are delivered, and we’re hopeful that through continued, positive conversations, all levels of government will make further meaningful investment in our community, in future. As this financial year draws to an end, residents are reminded to book

their free hard waste collection, if they haven’t already done so. Residents can use the vouchers provided on their rates notice for either one free hard waste collection, or up to two visits to the Melton Recycling Facility, each financial year. Council also offers a free drop-off service for specific household materials including paint, cardboard, light tubes and compact fluorescent globes, household and car batteries, a variety of chemicals, cleaners and solvents, engine oils and mobile phones. It was a pleasure to attend the recent turning of the sod ceremony which marked the start of works on the development of Allenby Drive Reserve, Hillside. Once complete, this exciting space will feature a playground and exercise equipment, a picnic area with BBQs, shelter, tree plantings and new turf. It will be a wonderful space for children and families to enjoy. The design for the reserve came after extensive consultation with the community who indicated they wanted a place to spend more time with their children and increase their physical activity. We are very grateful for the $300,000 provided by the Victorian Government’s Growing Suburbs Fund to help transform this space. On 19 April, Council hosted the first Young Minds Matter Forum; one of my initiatives that focuses on helping young people, their parents and carers to talk about mental health issues. With one in five residents aged between 10 and 25, the wellbeing of
opportunities, education, and training. Information about apprenticeship will also be on hand. The Melton City Council Careers Expo attracts more than 70 exhibitors which offer options for students exploring university pathways and further studies. Managing your own property … the pitfalls and the rewards There is more to being a landlord than unblocking the sink, collecting the rent and watching your investment grow. Here are some tips for successfully renting your property, writes Domain’s Sandy Smith. Going it alone It is possible to manage your own property but it can be hard work, time-consuming and may not fit around your work and family commitments. Make sure everything is in writing from the agent or the tenant if you are self-managing. Living close to your rental property is a huge advantage. Tenants will expect you to deal with a problem straight away and not when it suits you. Find trustworthy handymen and tradespeople for the jobs you can’t do and build good relationships with them. You will need them to respond quickly when there are urgent repairs, as well as completing good-quality work at a reasonable price. Find good tenants If possible, meet your future tenants. They might sound good on paper but meeting them face to face is the best way to find out all about them. “Landlords should always ask and verify that all references have been checked and vetted over the phone. Positive references are a great indicator of a quality tenant” says Karina Reed, a hockingstuart property manager. Use a property management service If spare time is at a premium, you may find it overwhelming when you need to run inspections, do condition reports, organise repairs, attend tribunals.

Having a property manager will also avoid you having to engage in awkward conversations about why the rent hasn’t been paid. Opt for a local agent because they will have in-depth knowledge about the local area.
Renting out your own home “If an owner leases out a property they have lived in prior, it’s important to remove any emotional attachments because a home will not return in the same condition and will naturally be subject to wear and tear,” advises Reed.
Get property insurance Make sure you take out a landlord insurance to protect your property and contents, and ensure the bond is lodged with the Rental Bond Board and not the agent’s or owner’s pocket. You can opt for additional insurance cover against rent default.

It is brimming with seafood – shellfish and calamari – along with chicken and smoked sausage. Wow – what a score for $10! We are having such a fine time, we hesitate not about ordering churros ($12). Served with two scoops of vanilla ice-cream and choc sauce, they are fresh, fat and fabulous. We arrived soon after the start time of 5.30pm; when we leave about an hour later, the joint is rocking and very busy – the Monday night paella project is an obvious success. One of these days, we’ll take Kensington Food Hall and its regular menu for a spin. We were actually very close to doing so a few months back, but we were waylaid by a very different – and fine experience – at a food truck just up Macaulay Road. And we like the look of the vegan feasts KFH is running. But tonight we’re here for the $10 Monday paella special. Kensington Food Hall has taken over the premises formerly inhabited by Korean joint Frying Colours. It’s been so long since we were in that eating house, that we can’t surmise about how different the new fit-out is. It is, however, very gloomy (we arrange our own mobile lighting) – though it’s also a cheerful place, with 1970s-80s hits adding to the happy hubbub. Now, when it comes to variations on the universal rice dish, we have our prejudices. Biryani – oh yes! Risotto? No so much. Paella? Well, in the past that way has provided us with mostly disappointment. so we are keeping our expectations well in check. Happily, wonderfully, that turns out to be entirely unnecessary. The Kensington Food Hall paella is a smashing winner. Our serve-for-two is mildly, deftly seasoned

SPORT New women’s Devils are taking it one step at a time Darley is showing encouraging signs in the first few rounds of the AFL Goldfields’ Women’s competition. Fielding a side for the first time, the Devils are facing some teams with more than five years’ experience. Coach Peter Curran said the other teams had been surprised how they had adapted to the game. He said they had 23 players on their list, many who had never played before. Several players had joined the club just weeks out from the start of the season. “About 90 per cent of the side is made up of brand new footballers,” he said. “Some had never kicked a football, let alone played before.
“We had one lady join 20 minutes before our second game. She’s an ex-kick boxer, who didn’t know a thing about footy. “What they’ve learnt in the last month or two is magnificent. “We’re new to the league, some teams have been around for four to five years.” While the Devils are yet to win a game, Curran said there was plenty of pleasing signs. He said the coaching staff of Ballarat congratulated them on their performance in round two, as they were shocked at the level they had played at. He said their off field bond was starting to show on the field. On Sunday, the Devils lost to Carisbrook 13.5
(83)-0.0 (0). Curran said for the side this year, it wasn’t about the scoreboard. He said it was about learning the game and starting to provide that pathway for the junior players coming through. “They love getting out there and it’s like a second home,” he said. “They’re having fun and improving and wins are a bonus.” Curran has been involved with the club’s female program since it started. He coached the youth girls side in its first four years, before coaching the club’s first under-13 side last year. “The aim is to develop a side and with the top age under-18s coming through, there’s a bit of talent coming through.

He was one of two injuries for day, with Simon Lafranchi hurting his groin in the third quarter. The game was his first for the season after dislocating his knee during last season’s finals series. He’s expected to miss several weeks. The win was a special one, with former captain Tyson Shea celebrating game 200. Hodgson said it was a fitting result to be able to celebrate the career of someone who has stuck through the tough and good times at the club. “A lot of players leave clubs during the tough times,” he said. “He’s now getting the benefits of that work and is still playing good football. “It was a good result to be able to carry him off the ground after a good win.” The Cobras now face Melton South, which is coming off the bye. Maddison Cooper and Kayla Ravanello kicked two goals apiece for the Bears. Hillside got its second win of the season, defeating Roxburgh Park. The Sharks won 6.10 (46)-5.2 (32).

Diggers Rest suffered its first loss of the Riddell District Netball League season. The Burras played some good netball at times against Rupertswood, but the Sharks were better for longer periods, winning 47-37. Rockbank got its second win of the season, easily accounting for Broadford, while Melton Centrals fell short against Riddell.

Bacchus Marsh put in a strong performance against North Ballarat City but it wasn’t enough for victory in the Ballarat Netball league. The Cobras took it up to North early on, before a 14-9-goal quarter gave North control at half-time. It was an even second half, with North holding on to win 46-38. Bears gain respect with important win over Lions Burnside Heights had arguably its best ever win against Coburg Districts in their Essendon District Football League division 2 clash on Saturday. While the Bears have had some important wins – like their first ever victory – Saturday’s against the Lions is the club’s first against quality opposition. The win not only showed that the Bears can beat some of those better teams, it also showed the belief within the playing group. Bears’ president Justin Peagram said the club was thrilled with the result. “They’ve been a work in progress,” he said of the side. “They stood up and showed what we have got.
“There’s a lot of new players at the club and that takes time to get the game plan going. “They stuck to that all day and it was our best win.” The Bears had to do it the hard way, having trailed all day. They kicked eight goals to two in the final quarter to seal the 19.8 (122)-14.13 (97) win. Peagram said in previous years they wouldn’t have been able to come from behind to get the points. “Coburg was still in front 10 minutes into the last quarter,” he said. “We kicked four goals to hit the front … once we got our nose in front we got on a roll. “To get the points is a proud moment.”
Josh Covelli kicked five goals for the Bears, while Vincent Angelone and Anthony Fawcus kicked four goals each. Peagram said while it was a team effort to get the win, it was pleasing to see some of the guys like Michael Shailer, Angelone and Stephen Kenrick have solid games. The win is the side’s first in 13 attempts against Coburg Districts. Peagram said a win like that will help reinforce the belief that coach Aidan Scott is trying to drill into the boys. “Aidan has been really strong with driving that message,” he said. “All our other games this season we’ve played well for two and half to three quarters,
Burras’ agonising loss By Tara Murray Diggers Rest fell agonisingly short of knocking off Rupertswood in the Riddell District Football League on Saturday. Two of the more impressive teams so far this season, the game was on the line until the final siren. The two teams went goal for goal in the first quarter, before the Sharks kicked six goals to three to open up a 16-point lead. The Burras lifted a level in the third quarter and dominated play and could have quite easily taken the lead. A goal to the Sharks’ Todd Podolczak after the siren gave the Sharks some breathing room at three-quarter time, in what turned out to be a crucial goal. The Sharks responded when needed and didn’t let the Burras hit the front. The margin got to within a goal on several occasions in the final quarter, with the Sharks winning 14.11 (95)-14.7 (91). Burras’ coach Jamie Lobb said it was a match that could have gone either way. “It’s more enjoyable than going out and winning by 200 points,” he said. “We had a crack and just fell short. “The boys tried their hardest and you can’t ask for more than that. “A few little things didn’t go our way and that’s football. “We will take a few positives out of that.” Lobb said as well as some positives, they also got an indication of where they currently sit in the competition. He said their midfield set up would be one area they would work on, as they got beaten too easily around there. The result leaves the Burras sitting 2-1, having played one less match than everyone else but Romsey. The Burras were not at full strength, with four to five players still to come back into the side. Lobb said most of them were still a few weeks away and likely to come back through the reserves to get fitness levels up. Lobb ended the game on the bench with his leg iced, after limping from the ground in the third quarter. He said his injury was “nothing serious”. The task doesn’t get much easier for the Burras who this week face reigning premiers Macedon. “We’ll get ourselves up for that,” Lobb said. Rockbank got to sing its song for the first time this season, with the Rams seniors and reserves both defeating Broadford. In the seniors, both sides entered the match undefeated, and it was the Kangaroos which started the better of the two sides. After quarter-time, the Rams got going to win 9.16 (70)-4.5 (29). Ricky Cameron kicked four goals in a best on ground performance for the Rams. Melton Centrals gave up a half-time lead against Riddell in their match on Saturday. On-field changes bring results The results aren’t yet falling their way, but the confidence is growing for Melton Phoenix in FFV state league 5 west. After a tough start to the season, the Phoenix have lifted a level the past two weeks and been unlucky not to come away with a win. Phoenix coach Mark Parnis said there had been a change within the playing group. “We made a few minor changes with the personnel and team structure,” he said. “With that there’s been such a difference in the whole squad and the club. “Even though we’ve lost and had a draw, we feel like things are turning around.” On Saturday, the side drew 1-1 with Westside Strikers, which entered the match undefeated. Parnis said the performance backed up the team’s performance the round before against Moonee Valley, another one of the top sides. “Against Moonee Valley we got a harsh penalty decision after we had blown them off the park,” he said. “We were unfortunate not to score two goals. This week we had a few older players in the side. The way they carved us up with the first goal was brilliant movement. “That was it all day. We should have scored two goals in the last five minutes to get the win. “We realistically should have won both matches.” Parnis said they were hoping this would be a good starting point to build for the rest of the season. Currently the Phoenix has just one win and a draw and is eighth on the ladder. “We’re happy with structure of play and we’ve really come on the last few weeks.” Despite hitting some good form, Parnis said a bye this week had come at the perfect time. “With the injuries we have, it’s a great time,” he said. “We had four or five out of our starting 11 the last few weeks. Add those players in and it makes a difference and adds more experience. “Against Moonee Valley we started four under-20 players and had two against Westside Strikers.” The Strikers slip to second on the ladder behind Gisborne, which has played one more game. In state league 4 west, Springs Hills drew 1-1 with Surf Coast. The Stallions sit fourth with three wins and two draws.

Switches and buttons for heating, ventilation and air-conditioning controls have been given a gloss black ‘piano key’ finish and the centre console’s vertical component has been improved with lower switches closer to hand.

A new 8-inch colour touchscreen display gives access to satellite navigation with Suna live traffic updates. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are part of the deal. Other features of an upgraded audio system include Bluetooth phone connectivity and audio streaming, AM/ FM radio, Aux and USB audio inputs.

Engines / transmissions
The 2018 Sonata keeps the same family of four-cylinder engines from the outgoing model. The Active is powered by the 2.4-litre, naturally-aspirated engine developing 138 kW at 6000 rpm and 241 Nm of torque at 4000 rpm. Power is put to ground via a six-speed automatic transmission. Premium has a turbocharged 2.0-litre unit, which puts out 180 kW at 6000 rpm, and 353 Nm between 1350 rpm and 4000 revs. It’s
mated with a new eight-speed auto gearbox. Both autos feature steering wheel-mounted paddle shifts.
Safety
The latest Active model has a host of advanced safety systems and technology. On board are electronic stability control, anti-locking brakes with brake assist and electronic brake-force distribution. Added to this are hill-start assist, traction control, emergency stop signal under

Summing up
The Sonata Active appears well-priced at a touch over 30k for a mid-size sedan. The 15-or-so grand more for the pleasure of Premium features seems a bit steep
