Leaving them in his wake

(Shawn Smits)

Joshua McConnell is looking to blow his competition out of the water at the Wakeboard Australia national championships this week. The Bacchus Marsh 19 year-old is off to Renmark in South Australia this Thursday (March 15) to take on 20 of Australia’s best in the amateur men’s division for 19 to 29-year-olds. McConnell is no stranger to competing at the highest level. In the past five years, he’s picked up two Victorian open professional championship titles and a top-five placing in the world secured in Toronto last year. “Dad got me into [wakeboarding] and I’ve been doing it since I was 11,” he said. “It’s like snowboarding on water. “I love it and I’m pretty confident going into the weekend. “Every chance I get, I’m on the water training. I’ve been at the gym and trying to stay healthy … and I’m looking to take away the top spot.” McConnell thanked all his supporters and sponsors for helping him reach nationals. Owner shaken by attacks By Esther Lauaki A Burnside mini mart owner whose business has been broken into three times in the past four months is considering leaving the country after the string of violent robberies. Thieves armed with a hammer smashed through the front doors of the milk bar on March 3 – the third attack on the business since November. The business owner, who asked not to be named, has joined a chorus of calls by residents asking for more police in nearby Caroline Springs. “I’m tired and exhausted and I haven’t slept and I can’t eat,” the milk bar owner told Star

Weekly last week. “My family is in Pakistan and they can’t help me when this happens. “I came to Melbourne to make a life for me and my family and I opened my business in July … but four months after opening, thieves started breaking into my home and my shop. “This is not life, I tried to find a good life but I haven’t found it so I want to leave.” Police believe the car used in the robbery, which was captured on camera, was one of two vehicles stolen in a violent home invasion in Kings Park on March 2. “These thieves are very strong and I was nearly crying I was so scared,” the business owner said. He said he lost $9000 in cash and cigarettes

in the first attack on the Burnside store, on November 22. The store was also hit on February 4 when a man smashed through the front doors with a crowbar. Burnside resident Derek Milligan said aggravated burglaries were becoming a weekly occurrence in the Caroline Springs area. “I can’t even buy a decent car without the fear of putting a target on my home to get robbed these days,” Mr Milligan said. He said he was disappointed to see so few officers stationed in the area. Last Tuesday, Victoria Police announced the deployment of 825 additional officers across the state over the next year, starting in May.

The Melton service area will get four officers and another seven will be deployed to Caroline Springs in family violence specialist roles. A total of 300 police are being allocated to areas with the highest need including Wyndham, Melton, Hume and Cardinia while another 93 will take on specialist policing roles and 208 dedicated family violence police. Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton said Victoria Police was focused on keeping people safe. “To do that we need to be the best policing service we can be – agile and responsive to the needs of communities, on the front foot, preventing crime and locking up offenders,” Mr Ashton said.

Work begins on busy intersection By Esther Lauaki A busy Darley intersection will receive a $2.4 million facelift. Works are now under way on the upgrade of the Gisborne Road and Holts Lane intersection which services about 5000 vehicles a day. The upgrade, which includes new line markings, a redesigned intersection and widened pedestrian refuges, aims to boost safety and improve traffic flow for the thousands of drivers that use it daily. Buninyong MP Geoff Howard last week

welcomed the start of the project which is funded under the state government’s regional road upgrades program. “Bacchus Marsh is growing rapidly, with its population expected to more than double by 2041,” Mr Howard said. “These works will add extra lanes on Gisborne Road to increase capacity, including adding a dedicated lane for southbound traffic to access the Western Freeway. “Also included are upgraded footpaths; a new link on the north-western corner and a new traffic island on Holts Lane, east of Gisborne

Road, to separate traffic lanes and improve safety. “The state government is working to reduce traffic congestion across the town and improve safety for those who live and work in the area and depend on local roads each day.” Roads minister Luke Donnellan said

upgrading the intersection would help get people home “sooner and safer”. “We’re getting on with the job of building the roads that this growing community needs – providing a safer and less congested connection from the Western Freeway to the heart of Bacchus Marsh,” he said. A reduced 40 kilometre an hour speed limit will apply during works. The speed limit is currently 60 kilometres an hour on Gisborne Road and 50 kilometres an hour limit on Holts Lane.Works are expected to be complete by mid-2018.

Clock’s ticking on fete for all The countdown is on for the Burnside Retirement Village annual fete and Gordon Douglas is keeping a sharp eye on the clock. Mr Douglas, who will be selling donated clocks and watches, is one of a host of stall holders at the March 25 event. Organiser Marlene Gorman said the fete attracts more than 1000 people.

“Most times it’s our good used furniture and the trash and treasure that keep people coming back,” Ms Gorman said. “People come to have a look around all the wonderful things on offer … the whole village gets behind this fete whether it’s by making a cake or getting behind a stall.” The proceeds will go toward improvements at the retirement village, activities and a new

barbecue area. Among the highlights will be trash and treasure stalls, used furniture, Devonshire teas and homemade cakes and jams. The fete will run from 9am to 3pm on March 25. Details: 8361 0499 Esther Lauaki

A lawyer for accused murderer Shane Robertson has told a court she is worried about her client’s mental state and urged that he be urgently referred for psychiatric treatment. Robertson, 28, appeared in Melbourne Magistrates Court on Sunday accused of murdering his partner, 29-year-old Katherine ‘’Katie’’ Haley, at Diggers Rest on Friday. His lawyer, Sharon Healey, asked that Mr Robertson be seen urgently by a forensic psychiatric nurse. “I’m concerned about his mental state,” Ms Healey said. Robertson looked down except when the magistrate spoke. Ms Healey said she was concerned Mr Robertson may self-harm and that he was having “suicidal ideations”. He was charged with murder in an out-of-sessions court hearing on Saturday night, and said he had cuts to his arm. Ms Haley, 29, was found dead by emergency services in Fairfield Crescent, Diggers Rest, about 11pm on Friday. Mr Robertson was arrested in Sunbury just before 1am on Saturday, about 10 kilometres from the address. In a Facebook tribute, one distraught friend of the dead woman said her “heart breaks for such a beautiful person and mother gone too soon. “I will miss your face and all our nail dates, RIP forever beautiful. Katie Haley shine bright.” Ms Haley worked at Castello’s Victorian Tavern in Gisborne and had previously worked as a hairdresser. This is Mr Robertson’s first time in custody.

Ready for battle of the brave Australia’s champion jousters will don their armour in a trans-Tasman battle this weekend. The home team will face off against New Zealand’s finest in the inaugural jousting competition on March 17 and 18 at Kryal Castle in Leigh Creek. Last year’s individual champion, Phillip Leitch, is invited to marshal (umpire) the event and ensure a fair and honourable competition. “Kryal Castle presents the perfect home team venue for the Australian team,” Leitch said. “The Castle has featured jousting as part of our entertainment since the drawbridge was first raised in 1974. “The rival teams both boast world class exponents of this dangerous medieval sport.” Veteran jouster Luke Binks of Queensland will captain the Australian team. He’ll be joined by Andrew McKinnon from New South Wales and Victorian Katherine McWade. The New Zealand team will be led by veteran Callum Forbes, with teammates Emily Perrin and rookie, Simon Neilsen. Kryal Castle’s Clifford Formosa will be the Knight of Honor and will step in to joust in a knights place should they have to retire from the field. Tickets: 5334 8555 or suites@ kryalcastle.com.au.

A Braybrook man who assisted in covering up the brutal murder of a Melton woman in 2015 has been sentenced in the Supreme Court to four years’ jail. Luke Marmo pleaded guilty to assisting his friend, Brendan Neil, and cousin Wayne Marmo in covering up the murder of Simone Quinlan in August, 2015. Neil was sentenced to 26 years in prison and Wayne Marmo 24 years for Ms Quinlan’s murder in December, 2017. The court heard that all three men and Ms Quinlan were heavy users of the drug ice and that Neil and Ms Quinlan were in an abusive relationship. On the night of August 25, 2015, Neil violently assaulted Ms Quinlan at their Melton property in the presence of Wayne Marmo and two other witnesses. Neil called Luke Marmo about 5pm and asked him to attend the property. Luke Marmo briefly visited the property before leaving and returning later that night with a jerry can of petrol. The three men wrapped Ms Quinlan’s body in a blanket and loaded her into the back of a ute. Luke Marmo then drove Neil to a nearby pub to be captured on CCTV footage, while Wayne Marmo fired shots into her head before dumping her body in a mineshaft in Kangaroo Flat and incinerating the body. Luke Marmo burnt the clothes he was wearing that night and returned to the Melton property the next day to help Neil sand blood stains out of the floorboards. In handing down the sentence, Justice Jane Dixon said the actions of Luke Marmo deserved a significant penalty. Luke Marmo will serve a non-parole period of two years, with 291 days already served in pre-trial detention.

Manure powers plant By Esther Lauaki A Bungaree dairy farm is attempting to turn 24,000 litres of cow poo into power. Ballarat-based mining company Gekko Systems designed and built a “biodigester” at AJ Trigg Farm in the hope of using the renewable technology across the industry and beyond. Gekko Systems operations manager Tony Stone said the aim was for the biodigester, which is still in its start-up phase, to eventually contribute to at least half the power needed to run farmer Mark Trigg’s robotic dairy. The biodigester was designed to work in a similar way to an animal’s stomach in which waste is heated up to 37 degrees and allowed to decompose for 25 days. The process creates methane gas, which is collected and transferred to engines to generate electricity. Mr Trigg said the smell was an initial concern but the technology also deodorizes the manure. “We’ve heard about digesters over the time in the industry and thought, ‘why can’t we have it in the dairy industry’?,” Mr Trigg said. Gekko Systems technical director Sandy Gray believes that the mining specialists have turned into “alchemists”. “We used to look at waste as something that was detrimental,” Mr Gray said. “But now we believe we’re going to turn it into gold.”

Teens charged over shopping centre brawl Five teenagers have been interviewed and two have been charged after a brawl in a shopping centre in Melton West last week which allegedly left a police officer with a suspected broken nose. The fight between about 20 males and females broke out just after 4pm on March 5 outside the Melton West Shopping Centre, police said. More seats to ease rail squeeze By Esther Lauaki More seats for passengers on peak-hour Bacchus Marsh services are now available after the roll-out of a new VLocity train last week. A six-carriage VLocity train will be used for the 7.39am Bacchus Marsh to Southern Cross weekday service as well as a 5.16pm Southern Cross to Wyndham Vale weekday service. The train provides an extra 80 seats for passengers and replaces the classic fleet trains that currently operate both services. Western Victoria MP Jaala Pulford said that the train would improve capacity and ensure a more comfortable journey for passengers. “By introducing a new Victorian-built VLocity train, there will be more seats, improved comfort and better reliability for passengers travelling from Bacchus Marsh in the morning,” Ms Pulford said. “This Bacchus Marsh service arrives at Southern Cross Station at 8.31am so is ideal for people travelling to Melbourne for work, study or appointments because it gets them to the city before 9am.” The state government will spend $311.1 million on 39 new VLocity carriages on top of the existing order of 48, which continue to roll off the production line. A total of 42 of the 48 new VLocity carriages are operating on the V/Line network and as more new carriages become available, they will be allocated where they are needed most, Ms Pulford said.

Melanie steps it up Melanie Bugeja is putting one foot in front of the other for a cause. The Caroline Springs kindergarten teacher is lacing up for Run for the Kids for the fifth time, helping to raise money for the Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal by taking part in the 15-kilometre event on March 18. Ms Bugeja has taught at Creekside College Kindergarten for the past nine years, and said it was working with sick children that kept her coming back to do the run each year. “I have worked with children who have cerebral palsy, leukemia, muscular dystrophy, severe allergies that are life threatening and asthma,” Ms Bugeja said. “I have learnt a lot from these disabilities and illnesses and its very heart-breaking for both the child and their families.” Ms Bugeja said she hoped several families from the kindergarten would join her. “Being a part of this event and running with so many thousands of people has been truly amazing over the years and has blown me away with the number of dedicated participants,” she said. “I like to get as many families and children involved in taking part in the walk or run or simply just giving a donation to the Good Friday appeal.” www.goodfridayappeal.com.au. Scouts scope for growth Construction has started on a new Scout adventure activity centre for Burnside Heights. Work on the 600-square-metre hub, which will be located next to Burnside Heights Reserve, started last week, with a crowd of more than 50 people turning out for a ground-breaking ceremony. Western Metropolitan MP Cesar Melhem said the $3.2 million project would help cater for the growing needs of the scouting community. “Melton’s Scout community is growing – that’s why we’re getting behind them to help fund this new centre,” he said. “This is about making sure the western suburbs have the best facilities for our booming population.” The centre will include a multi-purpose activity space with an adventure education centre, equipment storage area, a kitchen, toilets, meeting rooms, an office and a foyer. The centre will serve as the headquarters of the Caroline Springs Scout Group, which has outgrown its current facility. The group consists of 160 youth members and 25 adult Scout leaders. The new centre will provide the group with the capacity to expand its membership to 300. The state government will contribute $500,000 from its Growing Suburbs Fund towards the project, while Melton council will contribute $250,000. Scouts Victoria will shoulder the lion’s share of the costs, contributing $1 million. The centre is expected to be completed by August. School ushers in a new era A brand-new building for a Caroline Springs school will serve as a “powerful reminder of strong community interest and growth”. Southern Cross Grammar VCE students will soon be able to use the purpose-built facility to be officially opened on Friday (March 16). Southern Cross Grammar founding principal Andrew Ponsford said the new centre was designed to provide a contemporary, commercial-styled setting to support students in their transition from school to university and the workplace. “In its bricks and mortar it tells the story of the school and its people, and provides a tangible and very powerful reminder of strong community interest,” Mr Ponsford said. “In its quality it honours those who have gone before and it challenges those that follow by setting new standards and higher levels of achievement to strive toward.” Mr Ponsford said the goal of becoming the school of choice for the western metropolitan region is now a little closer. “It is wonderful that our first students at the year 12 level can enjoy this amazing facility in their final year,” he said. “The broader school community have all been a part of creating and shaping our future, of setting new benchmarks and of taking our school to the next level.” Community tours of the new building will be held on March 17. This Friday, 16 March, I’ll have the pleasure of attending the official opening of Southern Cross Grammar’s VCE Centre.

As Cambridge Ward residents know, I have advocated for an aquatic centre to be built near Caroline Springs for many years now.

The new centre will house new classrooms and facilities for a wide variety of VCE subjects. The centre will provide a great environment for young people to learn and excel, and I commend Southern Cross Grammar for building a facility which will no €‚€ƒ „ €‚ „…†‡€ˆ†„ ‰Š€‹

I’m proud to say that my initiative is getting closer to becoming a reality. At last week’s Ordinary Council meeting, it was resolved that in its 2018/2019 Budget deliberations, Council would consider allocating funds to purchase land for the proposed centre which, when built, will be a state-of-the-art facility. I extend my thanks to residents for their support and patience as we work towards kick-starting this project. Building a facility of scale takes time, but I’m sure once it’s built, it will be an outstanding centre everyone can enjoy.

Like many of my fellow residents, I’m also looking forward to celebrating Harmony Day, this Saturday 17 March, at Willows Historical Park, Melton. Festivities include food and performances from around the world, African drumming, henna tattooing, face painting and kids’ activities. It’s going to be a fantastic day, and encourage everyone to come along and celebrate our rich cultural diversity. This $13 million project includes the construction of two synthetic soccer pitches, ¨§¥œ¡•¡©›‘ ª¥ŽœŸŽ¬—‘ •Ž”‘ ¨§©›¡¨‘ «¥£”‘ £Ÿ¬ž¡ŸŽ¬¶‘ ·ž¥‘ •œœ©¦§•Ž–ŸŽ¬‘ §•¸Ÿ£Ÿ©Ž‘ ¢Ÿ££‘ ŸŽœ£“”¥‘ •‘¤Ÿ¨¡›©—‘œ©¦¦¥›œŸ•£‘¹Ÿ¡œž¥Ž—‘œ•Ž¡¥¥Ž‘¨§•œ¥—‘“¦§Ÿ›¥‘•Ž”‘«›¨¡‘•Ÿ”‘›©©¦¨—‘•Ž”‘¥Ÿ¬ž¡‘ change rooms.

I congratulate everyone, especially AVID Property Group, for their hard work in developing this extremely desirable estate and park for all our community to enjoy.

I have long been a strong supporter of this outstanding initiative which will promote health, wellbeing and active lifestyles in our community. Certain to be the jewel in our community, the project is scheduled to be completed in February 2019.

And last, but certainly not least, Council will also be hosting this year’s Melton Plate at Tabcorp Park, Saturday 24 March. A night of fun, free activities including pony rides, jumping castle, face painting, and of course, the running of the 29th Melton Plate, one of the most prestigious races on the Australian harness racing calendar; it’s an event not to be missed.

MY PLACE Snake catcher Jarrod Bingham is a sight for sore eyes when residents need to clear their homes of many unwanted guests. The Moorabool councillor talks with Esther Lauaki about critters and community.

How long have you lived in the area? I have lived in the area my entire life, it’s a beautiful area rich in environmental and heritage significance that needs protecting, which is partly why I joined council in the first place, I can see myself living here for the rest of my life. What are you passionate about? I am passionate about helping the community, wildlife and promoting conservation. Ten years ago I become a snake catcher as I didn’t want to see our wildlife numbers dwindle. Tell me about your involvement in the Moorabool community? As a Moorabool councillor I have the privilege of attending many local events, visiting and being able to help people from all walks of life, I love what I do, it’s such a rewarding experience knowing that I have managed to help improve someone’s life, no matter how big or small their issue was. My goal in life is to help as many people as I can to improve their lives and to actually make an impact in this life

Do you think snakes are misunderstood? Snakes, crocodiles and sharks are all thrown in the same basket as being mindless killers. That’s not the case at all. This is why I livestream most of my catches via my “venom squad” Facebook. I have caught some amazing footage of snakes, including a brown snake trying to play with me after I saved it from bird netting. However, nobody should ever, under any circumstances try to copy or re-enact anything that I do. I film purely for educational purposes and if I catch or hear anybody putting themselves in danger by doing so I will end my videos. What other hats to you wear in the community? I have worked alongside the Irwins for two years at Australia Zoo and I have wrangled crocodiles in Darwin for about six months. I also think people would also be surprised to know that I will be running as an Independent for the seat of Melton at the end of year state elections.

You have a job many would call dangerous – have you had many close calls?

You could probably say all are close calls due to the nature of the job, it’s all about controlling those risks and having a plan B in case you get bitten. I don’t fear getting bitten, it’s part of the job and the statistics aren’t really on my side. I literally handle hundreds of snakes every year. Unfortunately, I have been bitten once. I came across the biggest tiger snake I’ve ever seen in my life out in Kurunjang. I took my eye off it for a split second and received a ‘dry bite’ meaning no venom was injected. This was over six years ago when I was new to the job and I’ve learned from the experience.

(Joe Mastroianni)

What’s your connection with Melton and Moorabool? I am currently a local councillor for Moorabool Shire Council and a local snake catcher who works throughout the Bacchus Marsh and Melton areas. I come from a long line of farmers who have farmed the Parwan and Rowsley areas for generations.

NEWS STARWEEKLY.COM.AU

Labor’s plan to hold the west The Labor Party has spent the past three years running the state. But come November, will they be re-elected? Charlene Macaulay sits down with Premier Daniel Andrews to find out about his plans for the western suburbs. What do you consider to be the biggest issues facing the western and northern suburbs, and what will you do to address those issues if re-elected? I think the biggest issue in the western and northern suburbs, and indeed, right across the state, is jobs. Without employment, everything else in life gets really hard, that’s why we’ve worked so hard every single month that we’ve been in office to create the best part of 330,000 jobs. Whether it’s through our own infrastructure projects – the West Gate Tunnel, the City-Tulla widening project … the $1.8 billion in [Wyndham] roads, school projects like this one [$3.3 million for a new kindergarten built between Sunbury Heights Primary and Sunbury Downs College], hospital projects – there’s a long, long list. They all contribute to the number of people that are in work, and they help to set the tone and set some momentum up for us. We’re not without our challenges, of course, and that’s why we’ll keep investing in more schools, kinders as well as continuing to repair the damage that was done to our TAFE system. Continuing that infrastructure, road and rail. The western suburbs have long held a reputation for being Labor’s heartland, but many residents now fear that the west has

missed out on much-needed funding because they do not live in marginal seats. What do you say to this? It is true to say that over the years we have often been in the receipt of very strong support in the west of Melbourne and north of Melbourne, and I’m very grateful for that. To suggest, however, that we’ve not invested, or that somehow we’ve not sought to govern for every single Victorian is simply wrong. I’ve visited Sunshine Hospital many, many, many times and I’m happy and proud to have been closely associated with rebuilding large parts of that hospital, and the Joan Kirner Hospital for Women and Children will open later on this year. Only a Labor government builds hospitals, simple as that. The budget will have more to say about supporting better health outcomes in the west. I’ve lost count of the number of schools I’ve visited out in the western suburbs that are either completed or nearing completion. Of course, the West Gate Tunnel … a second river crossing giving everyone in the west an option and a choice that they’ve never, ever had. I completely reject the notion that we have not invested in the western suburbs and the northern suburbs, that’s simply wrong. I can absolutely commit to all of your readers that we’ll continue to support the north and the west in lots of different ways – everything from

kinders to TAFE, from community health to acute care, roads, rail jobs. And we’ll continue to give Graham Ashton, the Chief Commissioner, more resources than he has ever had so we can deploy additional police to fight crime and to keep our Victorian community safe.

I completely reject the notion that we have not invested in the western suburbs and the northern suburbs, that’s simply wrong

Discussions about a public hospital in Melton have been on the agenda for more than a decade. What is the likelihood that Melton receives state funding for this?

’’

This has been talked about for a little while and we’re obviously not far away from opening up that new clinic in Melton, so there’s some new primary care and some additional services that will be available there. Djerriwarrh, we’ve done some upgrade work there too, which is very, very important – not just for quality and safety, but beyond that to treat more patients and to provide some different levels of care that have not been available there in the past. Our department of health and human services is working very closely at what our future needs are, and clearly there are some pressures in the system, but they’ll be eased by continuing to invest in the system as it is now, but also doing the hard work to try and plan for the next phase, those areas where we’ll add an entirely new hospital.

- Daniel Andrews

Aggravated burglaries and home invasions are rising in Brimbank. Police Chief Graham Ashton has expressed frustration that police are often not informed when repeat offenders are going to be released from juvenile detention. Is this a system flaw and if so, what is being done to address it?

that he needs. Essentially, those changes took effect from Monday [February 26]. That means, for serious offenders, the Chief Commissioner gets the same information for a juvenile offender as he’s always had for an adult. That information is flowing, and it will continue to for as long as it needs to. That is now the law.

We changed the law in order to make sure the Chief Commissioner gets all the information

Last year you announced plans to start building the rail link between Southern

Cross Station and Melbourne Airport within a decade. Where does the project currently sit, and does the desired model include a stop at Sunshine station? What I announced is that we’d ask the co-ordinator general to have a look. He currently runs the Melbourne Metro Tunnel [project], all the big road projects, and the level crossing removals, so he›s across the whole lot.

Essentially if you electrify further out west – Melton, Bacchus Marsh – if you can separate regional passengers from an electrified metropolitan network further down into the west of Melbourne, and it’s part of that project, you can get an airport rail link. Sunshine as a hub point is one option. ■ Read

SPORT Finals blow for Falcons By Tara Murray The season is over for Caroline Springs’ top two sides after tough losses in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association semi finals. In what has been a good season for the club where it’s taken big steps forward, first XI skipper Kane Sevior said the weekend’s results were bitter sweet. “You are disappointed on the day, but we had won five games in three years before this year,” he said. “We played in a semi final and were really competitive. There was a lot of positives from the season, and while you can think what could have been, we’ve taken steps forward.” The top side took on Moonee Valley in their north A1 semi final. The Falcons batted first and got off to a tough start. Mujtaba Hussain and Sevior came together to rescue the innings and help the Falcons put together a decent score. They were bowled out for 190. Mujtaba top scored with 72, while Sevior made 57, but there was little other support. Sevior said they didn’t think they had enough runs on the board. “At 6-70 things weren’t looking good and the guys who normally get runs were out, with Moonee Valley bowling well. “Myself and Huss got a bit lucky and got the score to 190.” Despite some good bowling from the Falcons it wasn’t enough with Moonee Valley getting the runs with two overs remaining. They finished 7-192. “The guys bowled well but there wasn’t enough runs on the board,” he said. “I would have liked an extra 40 to 50 to put the pressure on a bit more. We took it to the final two overs. “They were the better team on the weekend.” Christopher Vulic and Gayashan Weerasekara took two wickets each for the Falcons. Moonee Valley will face Sunshine in the grand final, after the Crows won a low scoring affair against East Coburg in the other semi final. The Crows battled hard to make 127, in what looked like a below par score. It proved to be enough though, with the Crows bowling East Coburg out for 110. The Crows were sent back in and finished their second innings 1-101. The Falcons’ second XI side suffered a disappointing semi-final loss to Sydenham-Hillside in the north A2 competition. The Falcons were bowled out for just 93, with skipper Dave Martin top scoring with 18. Tristan Krizanic took four wickets. The Storm made the runs with ease, finishing 5-143. The Storm now face East Coburg in the grand final. It wasn’t all disappointment for the Falcons on the weekend after their under 15A boys won a premiership.

Spartans in female push Melton-based basketball club the Spartans are looking for ways to make them more than just a basketball club. With 20 teams, ranging from under-8s to seniors, the club has made a focus of being involved in the community as well. Community events and being part of Djerriwarrh Festival Parade are just some of the things the club is looking at doing. Having formed in 2011 as a new club for the Melton Basketball Association, the Spartans have continued to grow. The club split in two in 2015 due to the number of players and a new team was formed. Three years on, the Spartans have grown to 20 teams again. One of the main focuses of the club is to increase the numbers of girls playing the sport. As a club, 42 per cent of the players are female, but they represent just 30 per cent participation in some ages groups. As part of the club’s female push, two-time Olympian Rachel Jarry recently visited the club. Jarry ran a training session with some of the club’s girls while also answering questions. The other two main focuses for the club is coach development and making sure the club is an inclusive place for children to learn. The club’s focus over the next couple of weeks will be on finals of the summer season. Thirteen of the club’s 20 teams made it through to the finals, with five straight through to a grand final. Another five teams are through to the preliminary finals, with the grand finals held on March 24. The new basketball season is due to start in the coming weeks. Eagles ready to fly in finals despite last round loss A final round loss wasn’t enough to knock Eynesbury out of the top four, with the Eagles to play finals in their first season in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association. The Eagles entered the final round of the B-grade season needing a win to seal a top four spot, or rely on St Anthonys beating East Sunbury to stay in the top four. The Eagles let slip the chance to seal fourth spot on their own, losing to Macedon. Missing both the Castle brothers, Hayden and Luke, on day one of the match the Eagles were disappointing and were bowled out for 135. The Cats were 3-29 at stumps. It was a strong batting performance from the 48 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ MARCH 13, 2018

Cats on Saturday, who made the runs for the loss of five wickets. They continued to bat on, finishing 6-221. Liam Norris took three wickets, as all 11 Eagles players were given a bowl. It meant the Eagles finals hopes came down to the match between St Anthony’s Saints and East Sunbury Thunder. Fortunately for the Eagles, the Thunder fell 40 runs short against the Saints, ensuring a finals spot for the Eagles. St Anthonys had made 272 on day one of the match, with the Thunder all out for 233 with just over 10 overs remaining. That result meant the Eagles finished fourth, just over five points clear of the Thunder.

Despite defeating East Sunbury, St Anthonys slipped from first to second on the back of a massive win from Wallan against Kyneton. The Magpies made 7-404 before bowling the Tigers out for 156. The result meant the Magpies finished 1.06 points clear of the Saints. The Magpies will face the Eagles and the Saints will play Ashfield in the semi finals, with grand final spots on the line in both matches. Other final round winners were Ashfield and Bacchus Marsh. Meanwhile in the McIntyre Cup, Bacchus Marsh finished the regular season on a high with a big win against Romsey. With top spot already sealed up, the Bulls

were looking to complete the regular season undefeated. Romsey resumed at 2-4, needing 325 for victory, but they never got close, bowled out for 113. Jared Taylor took 4-10. The Bulls made 190 in their second innings with Daniel Lalor top scoring with 38. The Bulls now face Romsey for a spot in the grand final, while Riddell hosts Woodend in the other semi final. Diggers Rest Bulla finished its season with a win, defeating Rupertswood. The Burras made 237 in replay to Rupo’s 156. The Burras finished the season in seventh with four wins. Sunbury and Riddell were the other winners on Saturday. Tara Murray

Cobras add forwards and flexibility in hunt for glory Bacchus Marsh has looked to strengthen its side and add a bit more flexibility for this year’s Ballarat Football League season. Having played off in a second straight grand final last season, this time falling short to Darley, the Cobras have looked to address a couple of key areas. First was adding a couple more forward options. Second was to add more flexibility to the team. Cobras coach Travis Hodgson said they believed they had achieved both in what has been a good preseason. He said they were clearly a stronger side than last season. The club announced the signings of Jake Owen and Jacob and Matthew Chisari early

in the preseason and last week announced the signing of former North Melbourne player Ben Speight. Speight, who played 10 AFL games along with more than 100 VFL games, last season played with Wangaratta Magpies in the Ovens and Murray Football Netball League. He kicked 42 goals including three in the Magpies premiership win. Hodgson said getting Speight was a bonus. “You don’t usually jag guys like him in March,” he said. “He as was floating around as he was trying to get into the aviation industry and we’ve been able to help guide him down that path. “Looking at the competition he’s coming from, the amount of goals he scored would be

mainly as a full forward. “He’s a half forward midfielder, so to get him is massive.” Hodgson said with the additions, their forward line will be more like the 2016 premiership one with several key focal points, instead of like last season when they were too reliant on Jarrah Maksymow. He said one key area they looked to address in their player signings was adding players that could help them have different looks. He said all the signings were in that key age bracket as well. “With our best side we were hard to beat, but we had a few things go wrong at the end of the year and lacked that flexibility,” he said. “All the players we’ve brought in aren’t

restricted to the one area of the ground, and can play forward, back and on ball.” Dean Heta and Matt Denham are the key departures for the Cobras, with the rest of the playing group staying around. Kane White will miss the season after hurting his knee late last year, while Hodgson said Jackson Bolton is facing a late start to the season. Billy Griffiths and Dylan Bishop were two of the younger players who look like they’ve taken the next step during the preseason. Scott Sherlock will captain the side replacing Tyson Shea. Shea decided after 10 years in the role to stand down from it. Tara Murray

Lions on finals march By Tara Murray Melton was a team in a hurry, sealing its semi final spot in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association north-west competition with more than a day to spare. The Lions needed just under 79 overs to get the job done against Yarraville on Saturday in their qualifying final at MacPherson Park. The Eagles won the toss and elected to bat and it proved to be the wrong decision, with the Lions bowlers running through the order, to bowl the Eagles out for just 70. Lions playing coach Nathan Geisler said they would have made the same decision and batted if they had won the toss. “We played on the pitch last week and we knew it was a little bit two paced,” he said. “As I said last week getting those three key wickets [Matt Love, Matthew Harrison and Joe Billings] was the key and we had them out for about 30 runs. “It put pressure on their middle order and they didn’t cope.” Geisler had a day out taking 7-10, but he was quick to give praise to the whole bowling group. “It was one of those days where everything went my way,” he said. “We managed to hold onto our catches. The bowlers bowled well even when we weren’t taking wickets. “There was half hour periods where we weren’t getting wickets, but they weren’t getting runs.” With the first part of the job done, the Lions set about getting the runs and the win on the first day. Geisler said they timed the chase perfectly. It’s the second successive week the Lions have chased down low totals without much issue. “There were four or five minutes left when we passed them,” he said. “When we got the half decent start we wanted to get the result on day one. They weren’t keen to play on, so we were pretty happy not to have to play on Sunday.” Matt Stead, batting at number 3, top scored, as the Lions finished on 3-72. The Lions now host a home semi final against Williamstown for a spot in the grand final. Now in the last four, the Lions have set their focus on going at least one step further. “The final is at home and we’ve only lost one game there this season,” Geisler said. “We play the conditions well. “I said to the boys we’re down to the last four and we’ve got the chance to play off in a grand final. “We’re trying to book a ticket into the big dance.”

Main: Ashley Sweet in action on Saturday. Inset: Nathan Geisler had a day out.

Gisborne takes Gold and a grand final spot Bacchus Marsh Gold’s grand final hopes have come to an end at the final hurdle in the Central Highlands Bowls’ top division. Looking to come from fourth and play in the club’s first top division grand final in a number of years, Gold fell short against Gisborne. Three of the rinks went down to the wire, with the eight shot win by Gisborne’s Graham Quaife’s rink’ over Phil Minniti being the difference. Gisborne won two rinks, on the way to the 91 (16)-82 (2) win. The other two rinks were both draws, with Justin Webster and Shannon Clements unable to be separated with Gisborne’s Matthew Bacon and Darren Fletcher respectively. The result sets up a grand final between the last two title winners, Gisborne and Kyneton Golf. In division 2, Kyneton’s run continued with a strong win against Diggers Rest. Kyneton winning 86 (14)-57 (2), to set up a grand final match up with Gisborne Red. If Kyneton take out the title, it would have done it after finishing the regular season in fourth. Kyneton has two teams through to the grand finals with Kyneton Red through to the division 3 grand final. Red defeated Romsey in the preliminary final and now face Trentham in the grand final. All three grand finals will be held on Saturday. Tara Murray

MOTOR STARWEEKLY.COM.AU

Velar is fashion with function By Ewan Kennedy, Marque Motoring Land Rover has added another model to its already expansive range. The Range Rover Velar sits neatly in the gap between the Range Rover Evoque and the Range Rover Sport. Velar debuts Range Rover’s latest Touch Pro Duo infotainment system, with two high-definition 10-inch touchscreens. Naturally the Velar follows Range Rover’s long tradition of having a light, stiff, aluminium-intensive body. Keeping weight down not only gives even better off-road performance, but also makes it feel more agile around town and as a bonus it uses less fuel and creates fewer emissions. Almost like a sleek station wagon rather than a 4WD, Range Rover Velar combines fashion and function beautifully. So clean are the lines that the Velar has a coefficient drag of just 0.32, some low slung sedans can’t manage this. A result of the sensible shape is the boot volume is 558 litres. An interesting feature is the way the horizontal lines along the side are emphasised at various stages by cut outs, and even the door handle housings. About the latter, all four door handles stick out from the side of the Velar as long as it’s unlocked. Looks a bit untidy to our eyes, but perhaps this feature is there to attract attention. New Range Rover Velar is powered by a wide variety of engines; petrol and diesel; four or six cylinders; turbocharged or supercharged. Our test Velar SE had a four-cylinder 2.0-litre Ingenium turbo-diesel. This comes in two levels of tune to provide132 kW or 177 kW of power. Ours had the 177 unit. A V6 diesel has a huge 700 Nm of torque. A 280 kW supercharged V6 petrol engine enables the Velar to reach 100km/h in only 5.7 seconds.

Almost sleek in profile, the new Range Rover Velar combines fashion and function beautifully.

A sophisticated all-wheel drive system, class-leading ground clearance of 251 mm (213 mm in models with coil springs), and class-leading wading depth of 650 mm (600 mm with coil springs) show this is no pretty around-town pretend SUV. Traction technologies include Terrain Response 2, All Terrain Progress Control, Low Traction Launch, Hill Descent Control and

Gradient Release Control. The Velar debuts the new Touch Pro Duo infotainment system. This has two high-definition 10-inch touchscreens. The upper touchscreen’s menu is divided into three panels for navigation, media and phone. Interaction is similar to that when you use a tablet or a smartphone: swiping across the screen to change between menus, pinching

to zoom in and out, and with pressing and scrolling across the screen to pan across maps. The lower touchscreen is integrated within the centre console and manages features including the climate control and Terrain Response functions. The touchscreens are complemented by two rotary controllers that are configurable to enable them to perform several functions, for example adjusting cabin air temperature, massage seat settings or the Terrain Response mode. And much more. If you decide to take a Velar for a test drive may we suggest you allow at least an hour to let the experts run through the systems with you? There’s just one old-fashioned dial in the system. That’s to control the volume on the audio system. Which makes a lot of sense as it’s arguably the most used of all controls in all vehicles. Advanced driver assistance systems including Autonomous Emergency Braking with pedestrian detection and Adaptive Cruise Control with Queue Assist, the latter lets you have the Velar drive itself at very slow speeds in heavy traffic conditions – but don’t forget you’re still in charge so never take your eyes from what is happening. Active and passive safety systems are to the highest standard and it will be difficult to get into a crash even you want to. And should one sill occur the Velar will do everything it can to protect all occupants. Fuel consumption from the smallish diesel typically ran in the seven to eight litres per hundred kilometres on motorways and easy country runs, rising to a still reasonable nine to 12 litres per hundred. Range Rover Velar has an excellent combination of style, practicality and performance and we suspect many people will buy if for its looks - both inside and out.
