Rally call for safety By Tate Papworth Protect Victoria, a group formed earlier this year following the Bourke Street car attack and which has more than 30,000 Facebook members, will hold its first rally this Sunday. Members of the group will descend on Caroline Springs’ The Grange Village Park from noon as they continue to push for harsher penalties for serious violent crime, particularly for repeat offenders. While the group has held safety forums in the past, Protect Victoria founder Hayden Bradford said the Caroline Springs event will be its first rally. “Based on what our members wanted, we thought a peaceful rally was the way to go,” he said.

Party time for Melton
We’re simply fed up with crime and want to see change brought about
Thousands are expected at the Djerriwarrh Festival in Melton this weekend to enjoy a jam-packed line-up of activities. About 35,000 people are expected to enjoy the festival at Melton Recreation Reserve on Sunday (November 18). The day starts with the annual parade along High Street. This year’s theme is “I belong. A celebration of community”. For the first time, the festival will this year feature environment expo Sustainable Lane, which is aimed at helping residents to make their homes and lifestyles more environmentally friendly. Other attractions will include the Djerriwarrh Festival bonfire, market stall village, a pet expo, international food, Lion’s Club Carnival and a fireworks display to cap off the day. The live music line-up on the main stage will conclude with the Antipodean Rock Collective. Melton mayor Bob Turner said he was looking forward to the day. “Once again, we have managed to attract a stellar line-up of talented acts to perform their live music on the main stage,” he said. “The artists always draw in huge crowds. “Many months of planning and organising have gone into creating this wonderful day, which is sure to entertain both residents, and visitors.” Details: www.melton.vic.gov.au/ djerriwarrhfestival

“It won’t be like one of those rallies you see on the news, it’ll be a friendly, peaceful event held in the park, suitable for families and children. “We’d like to get over 1000 people there, but we’ll be happy with a healthy turnout. These things take time to build.” The group has steadily expanded since its creation and Mr Bradford said there was a jump in members each time a new incident generated media coverage. “Each time there’s a story about home invasions or carjackings on the news, we see a surge in new members,” he said. “It’s pretty clear to me that these sort of numbers show that people are fed up with the soft system we have at the moment.” Mr Bradford has created a petition, asking the government to conduct a full review and overhaul of the Victorian judicial system and to provide a tougher alternative to its policies around crime and youth detention. “At the end of the day, the government doesn’t care about Facebook numbers, but by signing our petition and coming along to our events, peaceful people power will bring about change,” he said. “We’re not a vigilante group, nor are we racist or anti-police. We’re simply fed up with crime and want to see change brought about. “There’s an election next year, but that’s too long to wait, we need change now and that’s only going to come with people power.”

Financial woes sting residents By Esther Lauaki Melton and Bacchus Marsh have been counted among Victoria’s bankruptcy hotspots, an Australian Financial Security Authority report shows. Between July and September this year, 44 personal insolvencies from Melton and Bacchus Marsh were lodged with the authority. In the same period, those areas recorded an additional five debtors with business-related insolvencies.
Wyndham topped the number of people declaring bankruptcy in Victoria with 105 residents going bust over the past quarter and another 18 debtors lodging business-related insolvencies. The Whittlesea-Wallan areas in the north followed with 81 personal cases and 12 business cases. The authority report, released earlier this month, said the main reasons Australians cited for declaring personal bankruptcy were “excessive use of credit”, unemployment or loss
of income, and domestic discord or relationship breakdown. Financial counsellor Colin Handreck, of Moorabool-based Child and Family Services Financial Counselling, said staff were often asked to help with debt management and housing affordability. Melton residents also ranked among the highest in the state for mortgage arrears and debt collection for utility bills. Mr Handreck said people who lived in Melton and Moorabool, but worked outside of
the area, often faced high costs in petrol, public transport and road tolls. Overall, personal insolvencies in Victoria numbered 1545 for the three months to September, up 6.6 per cent from the 1449 during the same quarter last year. Financial Counselling West, operated by Djerriwarrh Health Services based in Melton and Caroline Springs, can be contacted on 1300 786 696. Tram crew’s cafe ready for big brew Springside P-9 College students have breathed new life into an old Z-class tram as part of an innovative education program. Year 7, 8 and 9 students at the Caroline Springs school have been refurbishing the tram to turn it into a student-run cafe as part of the Hands On Learning program. Program co-ordinator Lisa Vagg said the program ran at Springside P-9, Creekside and Brookside colleges and aimed at changing the way students felt about school. “It’s all about keeping them engaged in learning,” Ms Vagg said.
“Kids learn differently so it’s great to build on their strengths and give them the opportunity to gain skills outside the classroom in building and hospitality.” At Springside, one crew of students has been building the tram cafe while another has been running The Next Stop Cafe out of the school’s home-economics room. The Next Stop Cafe operates at recess and lunchtimes on Friday for students and teachers. It will start operating from the tram early next year. The Hands On Learning program,
supported by Save the Children, recently earned international recognition after it was named in Finland’s Global 100 list of the most inspiring education innovations from across the world. “The program was recognised for its innovativeness, impact and scalability, with the listing noting that Hands on Learning is about being brave enough to try something that isn’t traditional schooling for at least one day per week,” Ms Vagg said.
Toolern residents are set to benefit from a new train station near Ferris Road in Melton South. The station will be based on the Ballarat line between Rockbank and Melton and is expected to be open by late 2019. The state government last week announced that the new service will be built to accommodate Melbourne’s booming outer-western suburbs and the growth of the Atherstone community. Toolern’s population is expected to jump to 55,000 people, from 1000 people, over the next decade. The station will include a carpark, a bus interchange and bike storage. Melton locals can have their say on the station’s designs in the coming weeks. Melton mayor Bob Turner said: “Council has been advocating to the state government for a new train station on behalf of our residents for years and we’re excited that plans and works are finally under way. “A new train station at Toolern is fantastic news, and will help service the rapidly growing population. “Access to close public transport will only provide greater incentive for more people to move to our thriving city.” Lendlease’s communities business managing director Matthew Wallace said the new station was a game-changer. “We acknowledge the state government’s vision in bringing this project to life. “For our Atherstone residents this means a shorter commute time into the CBD, allowing them to spend more time with their family,” Mr Wallace said. Bacchus’ growth plan revealed By Esther Lauaki Affordable housing, job creation and developing new communities are central to the state government’s plans for Bacchus Marsh. The draft Bacchus Marsh Urban Growth Framework, released last week, will guide the state government and Moorabool council’s decisions for shaping the town in the future. Planning minister Richard Wynne said the vision, prepared by the Victorian Planning
Authority (VPA) and the council, would cater for a growing population expected to reach 40,000 by 2041. Mr Wynne said the plan was about ensuring that as communities grow, infrastructure and services grow with them. “Bacchus Marsh is a great place to live and we want it to stay that way. “We’re planning for thriving communities with local jobs and affordable homes,” he said. “This is about getting the planning right now, so we can give families of tomorrow a great
community to live, work and raise a family.” The plan also protects important agriculture and sand quarrying areas and creates a new jobs precinct. The Parwan Employment Growth Precinct is expected to be a base for 1200 agribusiness jobs, including meat processing, mushroom growing and hydroponics. The framework also nominates a growth boundary to avoid urban sprawl and protect the key environmental and cultural assets that make Bacchus Marsh special, including
the Avenue of Honour, the Lerderderg and Werribee rivers and the Long Forest Nature Conservation Reserve. It also sets out how the council can work with the government to plan for new neighbourhoods in Merrimu, Hopetoun Park North and a neighbourhood centred around the future Parwan station. Mr Wynne said that the VPA will prepare precinct plans, identify infrastructure projects that new communities need – including roads, train service upgrades, schools and parks.
The bad blood of mates Thirty-two years after one of the classic fights in boxing history, a movie deal is in the pipeline for western suburbs boxing world champions Barry “Boy” Michael and Lester “Master Blaster” Ellis. Michael, from Williamtown, had reached the pinnacle by beating Ellis for the IBF super-featherweight world title in 1985. But Ellis’s “underworld management” was “filthy on me”, Michael said. He said he was with his first wife at Lazar’s when Ellis’s promoter, Alphonse Gangitano, nearly bit his face off, putting him in hospital. Ellis, from Taylors Hill, said that while he had gangster backing, Michael had support “from the wharves”. “I think we were the last Australians, and the second-last in history, who fought a 15-round fight,” Ellis said. Michael said he was indebted to Ellis for the rest of his life for the opportunity to fight him.
“When we look back on it, we were always both mates,” Michael said. “When I lost the world title, when I got to Melbourne, one of the first people to ring me up was Lester … we had a meeting and let bygones be bygones. “Because they made mountains out of molehills. But no worries, there was deadset bad blood by the time we got in the ring – well and truly.” In the movie, Ellis’s role is expected to be played by his son, Lester jr, who is pursuing an acting career. Michael said he was in discussions about who would play him. “It would have to be someone short, that’s for sure,” he said. “Someone suggested Gyton Grantley. He worked with Lester jr on Underbelly – he played Carl Williams.” Goya Dmytryshchak

Heat turned up in push for pool By Esther Lauaki A Bacchus Marsh woman is calling on her fellow residents to help reignite the push for a heated indoor pool. Funding an indoor swimming pool in Bacchus Marsh has been a long-running issue for residents. Now pool campaigner Anne Cadzow wants the community to take up the fight and help raise money for a privately funded pool. “I appeal to the community to support any further fundraisers for a proposed indoor
aquatic centre for Bacchus Marsh,” Ms Cadzow said. “It is time the Bacchus Marsh and surrounding area residents raised the profile of the issue.” Plans for a multi-million dollar indoor pool facility hit a wall when state funding was announced and then scrapped in 2013. The push for an indoor facility has gained traction in recent weeks after residents have expressed their frustrations about the sporadic timetables for the Bacchus Marsh and Ballan outdoor pools. Ms Cadzow said last month’s Bacchus Marsh

Flower and Garden Show raised about $9000 towards the cause, on top of the more than $12,000 which she says has been raised in the past three years. Flower show organisers have opened a Bendigo Bank account for money raised for the pool project.
“A heated pool would be beneficial to us all, regardless of age,” Ms Cadzow said. “Every child needs to overcome any fear of water to avoid drowning … teenagers, families, sports people training [would use the pool]. Others could use it for hydrotherapy.” An indoor pool is expected to cost about $7 million. Plans floated by the state government in previous years have included provision for a 25-metre, eight-lane pool, a learn-to-swim pool, kiosk, administration facilities and change rooms.
Baby first is key to plan Melton parents are among hundreds of people across the north-west suburbs who will learn skills to potentially save children’s lives. North Western Melbourne Primary Health Network (NWMPHN) has teamed up with Tiny Hearts First Aid to fund infant and toddler first-aid training sessions for Melton parents and parents-to-be, starting later this month and running until mid-2018. Tiny Hearts chief executive Nikki Jurcutz said the three-hour sessions would teach parents how to respond to medical situations such as choking, burns, allergies and drowning. Infant, child and adult CPR skills would be included. “The program also provides parents with an understanding of what healthcare options are available, particularly in the after-hours timeframe,” Ms Jurcutz said. “The program aims to enhance the knowledge, skills and confidence of parents to
make more informed and appropriate decisions when it comes to the health of their children.” NWMPHN’s Christopher Carter said the program was a great boost for child and parent health in the region. “Parents will learn what to do in an emergency, as well as less urgent medical situations,” associate professor Carter said. “They will also have the knowledge to choose the best place to get help if they need it, whether that be from their GP, at an after-hours clinic or a hospital emergency room.” Initial training sessions will be held at Melton Community Centre on Saturday, November 25, between 9am and 12.30pm. Register at bit. ly/2zsfc2V. Esther Lauaki Training sessions will equip parents with valuable, child-based first-aid skills. (Supplied)

The remaining offences happened on buses, at bus stops, in taxis, on trams and at tram stops, although Maribyrnong is the only municipality in the west which has trams. Three weeks ago, Victoria Police and Crime Stoppers launched a campaign aimed at raising awareness of sexual offences on public transport. In that time, Crime Stoppers released photos
More than 50 sex offences have been reported on public transport across the west in the past financial year. Victoria Police statistics show there were 51 sexual offences reported on, or near, public transport in Brimbank, Melton, Wyndham, Hobsons Bay and Maribyrnong in the 2016-17 financial year. The number is almost double the 28 sexual offences reported on public transport in the
of 10 offenders wanted in relation to sexual offences allegedly committed on Melbourne’s train, tram and bus system. Transit safety division Inspector Karl Curran said sexual offences on public transport included people exposing or touching themselves inappropriately, people engaging in sexual acts in front of commuters and unwanted touching. “People should be able to go about their daily business without being touched inappropriately by anybody. It is a crime,” he said.
Inspector Curran said police believed the incidences were under-reported, and that authorities urged all victims to report crimes they experienced. “We’ll support them, we listen to what they have to say and we’ll do everything we possibly can to resolve this crime,” he said. He said anyone experiencing, or witnessing, a sexual crime should contact triple-0. If you have been a victim contact triple-0, 1800 RESPECT or 1800respect.org.au. Cheers for grand chase Participants from Autism Plus have developed a wish list of items they would like to get with the prize money. They range from a double decker bus trip to a sand pit or sensory garden. “We would like to thank everyone, it was a wonderful day and we truly appreciate the opportunity to be involved,” Ms Grogan said.
Autism Plus Melton recently took home a $10,000 cheque at the TAB Great Chase Grand Final. About 45 disability and aged care organisations were invited to The Meadows to enjoy an afternoon of racing hospitality and the chance to share in $24,000 in cash prizes. Disability support worker Carmel Grogan said the $10,000 prize, which was drawn from a barrel, will make a huge difference to Autism Plus. “It’s better than Christmas. It means we’ll be able to provide so many more programs, go out on more outings. It will be so beneficial for our guys,” Ms Grogan said. “The participants loved the huge cheque, being part of the spotlight and getting to pat the winning puppy, giving her lots of hugs and kisses just because we could.” Ms Grogan said the great chase provided a great day to mix with others in the community.

Pupils from Melton South Primary School have put their art skills to work to create a number of posters for this year’s National Water Week. Four Melton South pupils received prizes from Western Water for their efforts. The winners received vouchers of up to $100 and a jigsaw puzzle made from their artwork. This year’s Water Week theme was “Water the Heart of our Culture”. It aims to encourage more people to understand how water shapes our lives through the natural world, recreation and community values.
Western Water’s customer and community relations general manager Graham Holt, said: “Western Water is supporting the state government’s voluntary Target 155 program, which asks people to use no more than 155 litres of water each per day.” “With summer approaching, now is a good time to think about ways to conserve water.” Five hundred primary school pupils across the state entered the competition. Tatchell takes the lead By Esther Lauaki The next 12 months will be veteran councillor Paul Tatchell’s third, and possibly final, stint in the top job at Moorabool council. The central ward councillor was elected mayor last week with experienced eastern ward councillor John Keogh to serve as deputy mayor. Cr Tatchell said before last Wednesday’s meeting that this was likely to be his final council term and he hoped to secure more state and federal funding for infrastructure across the shire, with an eye to the growth of Ballarat. “Council continually needs to be refreshed and so I’ll be happy to leave what I can behind to help set up Moorabool for the future,” he told Star Weekly. “We need to break down some barriers that keep Moorabool out of the spotlight. “There are invisible lines between Moorabool and Melton and Moorabool and Ballarat. We are part of the peri-urban region and we need to be recognised more. “That’s the immediate goal.” The Ballan-based councillor was defeated by incumbent Catherine King in July last year when he ran for the National Party for the federal seat of Ballarat. “Now decentralisation is the new buzzword Moorabool has never been more important,” Cr Tatchell said. “If Ballarat truly wants to be the capital of western Victoria it needs to expand in all corners and beyond the invisible council line.” Cr Tatchell most recently served as mayor in 2013 and 2014. Paul Tatchell has been elected mayor of Moorabool for another term. (Supplied)

Tumbling into national win Acrofun’s little gymnasts are kicking goals all over Australia by placing first, second and third in this year’s National Women’s Artistic Gymnastics competitions. On October 21 and November 4, the Bacchus Marsh club’s national level two team and national level four team, competed in Hamilton and Mt Gambier. The two teams placed first overall at the Hamilton competition and in Mt Gambier the level two team placed first and the level four team placed second. Acrofun president Bree Mort said: “As a club we are excited about the recent successes at the national competitions as our club and our gymnasts have worked hard to be recognised at this level of sport.” Ms Mort said as a rural club they faced many challenges. “The fact that we can rise above this and still come home with places is an awesome achievement and a true testament to our gymnasts and our coaching staff,” she said.

Cr Michelle Mendes Watts Ward
Firstly, I’d like to take this opportunity to say how proud and humbled I am to have been chosen to lead the City of Melton as Mayor over the next 12 months.
It’s hard to believe that the first year of this Council term has already come to an end.
As well as being a great honour, the mayoralty is also a great responsibility and I thank my fellow Councillors who have entrusted me with this role once again. I commit myself to serving the people of our great City to the best of my ability with pride, dedication and, above all, with integrity. Of course, it’s a team effort and I would like to acknowledge my fellow Councillors for their commitment and dedication to our community. It would also be remiss of me not to acknowledge our outgoing Mayor, Cr Sophie Ramsey, for a job well done during a challenging 12 months. I’m strongly committed to serving this great City—the best city in Australia, if not the world, in my opinion—with energy and passion, and look forward to taking every opportunity to meet with residents to celebrate our unique community. ¡ ¢ £ ¤¢ ¥ ¦§ ¨ ¡ ©ª ¢¤ « ¢ Saturday 18 November. Police frustrated with motorists By Esther Lauaki Police are disappointed by the number of motorists who gambled with their lives over the Melbourne Cup long weekend. Close to 150 motorists were caught flouting the law on Melton and Moorabool roads over the five-day statewide operation between November 3 and midnight on Melbourne Cup day. In Melton, 71 drivers copped fines for

speeding, another 72 drivers were caught speeding in Moorabool. Twelve Moorabool motorists were caught driving unregistered vehicles while there
were 11 unregistered vehicle offences in Melton. Officers patrolled all major highways at country race meetings and transport hubs across Victoria throughout thee operation. In total there were 9030 traffic offences and 976 criminal offences detected. Statewide, more than 3000 motorists were caught speeding, 664 mobile phone offences were detected and 333 seat belt offences were recorded.
Assistant Commissioner Doug Fryer said it was concerning to see motorists disregarding the road rules and jeopardising public safety. “Police aren’t here to spoil the fun; we just want to see everyone get to their destination safely,” Mr Fryer said. “Eight fatalities occurred over the weekend, which means there are eight families who are now mourning the loss of a loved one. We don’t want to see any more deaths on our roads.”
It’s all about the base Melton State Emergency Service crews and volunteers are set to have a new base that would service the Caroline Springs and Plumpton area. The project was announced as part of the state government’s $34.3 million State Emergency Services funding package for new trucks, boats and trailers and to modernise buildings. Previously, councils and the state government funded SES services jointly, but an additional $14.9 million which was allocated in the state budget earlier this year will now cover operational costs. Section leader Karl Sass said a new unit in the eastern corridor of Melton’s response area has been a long time coming. “Volunteers of the Melton SES unit will continue to provide the highest level of response capability to the Caroline Springs and surrounding communities, as we always have, until the new base is operational,” he said. “As the population and number of incidents the Melton SES responds to continues to grow,
the Melton SES will soon be commencing a major recruit drive for volunteers in a wide range of operational and supporting roles. “One of the challenges is keeping up with population growth and having a second base will be crucial in improving response times.” Mr Sass said about a third of the Melton SES members come from the eastern corridor and more are welcome. Emergency Services Minister James Merlino said the service is on track to record its second busiest year ever with volunteers responding to more than 38,000 requests for help. “From new buildings to new trucks, this funding will help the men and women who help us – often in the worst of times.” Esther Lauaki Melton SES deputy controller Rodney Fraser, controller Wayne Stylianou and deputy controller Nicolas Gargalakos. Descendents of a pioneering Melton family helped open a time capsule last week in a celebration of 25 years of history. Members of the Pinkerton family were on hand last Wednesday to open the capsule containing photos and documents provided by community members involved in two local projects in 1992. The capsule was placed at the site of the Pinkerton family memorial cairn on November 8, 1992, to mark the culmination of the Surbiton Park and Pinkerton Forest projects. Melton council acquired Surbiton Park, a 400-hectare property adjacent to the Melton Wastewater Purification Plant, for recycling wastewater and sewage. The rejuvenation of that land was known as the Surbiton Park project, with the relocation of graves known as the Pinkerton Forest project. Melton mayor Bob Turner said that the face of the community had changed significantly in the past 25 years. “Through the items included in this time capsule, we have the chance to better understand what things were like back then,” Cr Turner said. The council collected contemporary documents that capture the essence of the municipality for a new time capsule that was placed in the cairn. It will be opened in 2042. “When we buried the new time capsule, preserving current information, images, newspapers, and messages for future generations, I couldn’t help but wonder what future generations will think of us, and how much things will have changed in 25 years,” Cr Turner said.

Hospital administrator on board until 2020 Bacchus Marsh Hospital will continue to be overseen by a state government-appointed administrator until 2020. Dr John Ballard’s term as Djerriwarrh Health Services administrator has been extended until June, 2020. He was appinted in 2015. “I want to reiterate how safe this hospital is,” he said. “There are new systems, new services, new people and a new culture now in place. “I am here to ensure that these changes are sustainable for the long term and oversee the new building projects at the hospital.” Victorian Health Minister Jill Hennessy said Dr Ballard had played an important role in redeveloping the hospital. “I have reappointed Dr Ballard to continue his exceptional work to improve quality and safety, and to continue to build community and staff confidence in the service,” she said. “The government is continuing to invest in Djerriwarrh Health Services through a

If there’s one thing that unites people, it’s having grown up in Melbourne’s working-class western suburbs in the post-war migration and industrial boom years. It’s this fierce ownership of place that inspired How the West was One: Memoirs of Melbourne’s Western Suburbs – a compilation from 39 contributors to be launched on November 12. Childhood friends Karyn Howie and Sue O’Brien collected the stories from the likes of comedian Rob Sitch, cartoonist Michael Leunig, actor Kevin Harrington, Sun Theatre owner Michael Smith, Western Bulldogs’ author Kerrie Soraghan, musicians Mark Ferrie, Wendy Stapleton and Pat Wilson, and journalists Josephine Cafagna, Lina Caneva and Tony Leonard. The book tells of the tough life of migrants, local characters and the physical labor in the abattoirs, factories, kitchens and transport hubs. Howie and O’Brien state in the book that when someone who grew up in the western suburbs in the 1950s, ’60s or ’70s meets another person from the same background, there’s always a shared excitement. “It’s about the bursting pride that every westie felt when the Bulldogs won the 2016 AFL premiership,” they write. “It’s about giving something a red hot go, working hard, looking after each other, having a good laugh but never ever getting too full of yourself.” Harrington, who states in the book that it was a privilege to grow up in Footscray, recounts telling his late mum he was working with Sitch. “You be nice to the Sitch boy,” his mum had said. “Why,” he had asked. “Because he’s important?”

MY PLACE Nathan Miles puts in the extra effort for people and animals in need. The long-time Melton resident chats with Dewi Sherry. What is your connection to Melton? Me and my family moved to the municipality in 1999. We thought it was a good place to raise a family, and at that time it was affordable. How long have you lived in the Melton area? Around 18 years. How long have you worked with the Western Suburbs Cats and Kitten rescue? It was founded by a group of volunteers passionate about animal welfare over a decade ago. We started it with the purpose of ending the over-population of cats and promoting responsible ownership of cats. The group has grown to the point where there’s more demand than we can cater for. How did you first get involved? It all started in 2001 with a single kitten coming into my care, with no mother, that needed around the clock bottle feeding. (Damjan Janevski)
What are you passionate about? Social justice and animal welfare. What other hats do you where in the community? I am involved with a number of resident groups and associations and sporting clubs. What would people be surprised to know about you?
People would be surprised of the different community projects that I work on and my strong commitment to disadvantaged children. What is the best thing about living in Melton?
It’s not to far from the city and has everything you need. If you could change anything about the area, what would it be?
I’m not happy with the way some of the Coburns ward councillors represent us in Melton and I will be seeking Labor Party endorsement for the Coburns ward to ensure our community is appropriately represented.

Cayden Rogerson has won a humanitarian award. (Dennis Manktelow)
Cayden paid in kind Exford Primary School pupil Cayden Rogerson has been recognised for his compassion, integrity and kindness by receiving the Fred Hollows Humanity Award. The Fred Hollows Humanity Award acknowledges year 6 students who demonstrate humanitarian values toward others. Cayden was nominated for the kindness and compassion he shows at school and on the sporting field. Cayden is said to be respectful of how others might be feeling, and will always assist any classmate or team member in need. Fred Hollows Foundation chair and former premier John Brumby presented students with their certificates in Melbourne last week.
“These young Victorians have shown confidence, compassion and leadership within their schools and in the wider community,” Mr Brumby said. “Their care and concern for those around them is an inspiration, not only to their peers, but to their teachers, parents and everyone they meet.” Cayden is one of 81 students from Victoria who were presented with the award. This year the Fred Hollows Humanity Award became a national initiative with 420 children nominated across the country. Dewi Sherry

When asked what he loves best about being owner of Harvey Norman Furniture at Watergardens, Binh Nguyen is quick with a response: “Meeting the locals in my culturally diverse patch.” Binh, 35, has been with Harvey Norman for more than eight years, gaining loads of invaluable experience in Melbourne and Sydney stores. “I started in Maribyrnong, moved to Chadstone and then packed up to help run Sydney’s Caringbah before relocating to the flagship Auburn store,” he says. “A couple of years ago, my wife and I returned to our hometown Melbourne, this time with a littlie in tow. “I felt immediately at home in the Watergardens store and I’ve loved getting to know my community, listening to what they need and presenting solutions.” “We have an exciting mix of customers and that can present the types of challenges I get a buzz from. It might be a young couple, with a tight
budget, looking for a sofa to see them through the renting years. Or it might be a family looking for a statement piece for their new home. “All our staff have the knowledge, expertise and experience to help guide that couple to the right choice. Our team have the latest trends at their fingertips and understand how to put together the right look.” Binh is expecting an extra busy time leading up to Christmas. “This is when people think about hosting a Christmas gathering,” he says. “Whether they need a new dining setting or something else to give their home a fresh look, there are ways to introduce a new decor item to achieve the biggest bang for buck. A NOW moment for Ash
Ash Grunwald has had the most prolific blues career in Australian history and been at the forefront of success in the Australian music scene for more than 12 years. He’s just released his ninth studio album, NOW, produced by Nick Didia, and has been nominated for six ARIA awards and three APRA awards, winning two of the latter.
The man’s talents and achievements have gone from strength to strength, innovation to innovation and from country to country. Produced by Nick Didia (Pearl Jam/ Springsteen/Rage Against the Machine) from studio 301 in Ash’s home town of Byron Bay, NOW will stand as a sonic landmark in Ash Grunwald’s career as a respected Australian roots musician. He delves into a more experimental and modern approach explaining his intention was to create a “modern psychedelic, sci-fi, swamp rock, blues album, if there is such a thing. Ha!” Drawing inspiration from collaborators Ian Peres (Wolfmother) on synth, Pete Wilkins (formerly Blue King Brown) and, of course Nick Didia, Ash aimed to approach the album with a traditional power trio reminiscent of seminal acts such as Hendrix and Cream. Always a festival favourite, Ash takes the Main Stage at 8pm on Saturday.

Entry is to a tiled walkway with downlit wall niches, to the left of which is a carpeted open lounge room with terrific lowboy cabinetry in pearl-grey wood-grained laminate. Farther along, there’s an under-stair storage space and access to the remote-controlled drive-through double garage. The expansive living hub is next, where the slick kitchen has an island bench topped with white Caesarstone, white glass splashback, and cabinetry in the same
pear-grey wood-grain as in the bathrooms. Tucked behind, there’s a walk-in pantry, beyond which are a powder room and laundry. Grey-carpeted stairs ascend to a landing, around which range four large fitted bedrooms and fully tiled main bathroom with raised basin atop Caesarstone. The main bedroom has a walk-in robe and a similarly decked-out en suite. Evaporative cooling, ducted heating and a split-system keep things seasonally comfy.

Narrow back and side yards are virtually maintenance-free. St Catherine of Siena and Wedge Park primary schools and Catholic Regional College are within four-minute car trips, Melton Secondary College a little further. Woodgrove shopping centre is about 10 minutes away, Western Freeway entry less. If a sparkling house in a quiet street is your cup of tea, this could be it. EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST SOUGHT About the Company and the Project
The Minister for Planning approved the construction and operation of the 107-wind turbine Moorabool Wind farm in 2010. The wind farm is broadly split into two sites; the Bungeeltap in the North (50 wind turbines) and Ballark in the south (57 wind turbines). The project is expected to produce approximately 1,000,000 megawatt hours of renewable electricity each year. This will power approximately 223,000 average Victorian homes, enough renewable electricity to supply 11% of average homes in Victoria. SPORT Saints steady as they continue their development St Anthonys continues to develop in the CV Women’s Community Cricket’s north west one-day competition. Fielding a women’s side for the first time, the Saints have impressed with their rapid improvement. Coach Warren Haffendon said he was shocked to see how far they had come. “I said to the president at the start I’m not fussed if we don’t win a game. For me to see them improve from when they started until the end is the main thing. “Spectators coming to watch the game keep saying that they have got better every week. “They are really enjoying it and wins are a bonus.” Haffendon, who took on the coaching role to ease the pressure of the men’s coaches who were coaching the side, said all the players were willing to learn. With his wife Jacqueline Haffendon captain
of the side, he said it made sense to take on the role. He said most of the players had either played indoor cricket or cricket with the kids in the backyard. “We started with 10 or 11 players and it stayed that way for a while. We’ve managed to pick up four or five players. “While I’ve never coached girls before, I’ve coached indoor juniors. “The biggest difference I’ve found is the girls want to learn and they ask for help. “Getting them to learn is half the battle.” So keen are the players to improve, most are doing extra training sessions on top of the two team training sessions each week. “There’s a Facebook group and someone will post in it most days they’re going down to the nets and normally four or five players turn up.” The Saints have one win from their opening four games.
On Sunday, they produced their highest score of the season, but it wasn’t enough against Melton Centrals. Centrals made 2-231 off its overs, with the Saints making 5-176 in reply. Haffendon said different players were standing up each week. “They’re still getting used to playing outdoor cricket and playing in those conditions,” he said. “Our top three or four with the bat are pretty strong and we had a couple of players make 30s against Gisborne. “One person is making a contribution with the bat each week. The wickets are being shared around which is really good.” Haffendon said while they had enough for a team, anyone interested is welcome at training. Lions roar into season By Tara Murray Melton is again looking to be among the contenders in Women’s Victorian Premier Cricket seconds’ competition. The Lions, who have been up the top of the ladder the past few years, are hoping to continue their form. It’s been a mixed start to the season for the Lions, with a washout, a win and three losses. Lions’ captain coach Nicole Martin said they had managed to keep most of the playing group together. “It’s been a pretty good start,” she said, despite the results. “We lost a couple of girls and some of our indoor form has transpired into outdoor cricket. “Three of us played for Australia at the indoor world cup [Martin, Briony Polkinghorne and Laura Shaw] and we got the win. We also played for Victoria at the Nationals. “We’ve recruited a few players as well.” Chloe Ip has come across from Box Hill and Emily Sculley has joined from Napoleons/ Sebastopol, while Alana Kott has come back to the sport after a number of years away. The one big out for the Lions is that of Stephanie Theodore, who won the seconds’ competition best and fairest in 2016. Theodore, who is captain-coach at Coburg, was instrumental in defeating the Lions on Sunday in the clash between the two sides. The Lions made 5-181 from its overs. Coburg made the runs with nearly four overs remaining. Theodore made 71 not out and was supported by Rebekah Morris who made 69. Polkinghorne took two wickets and forced a run out, while Kerri Garwood also took two wickets. With a smaller competition this season, Martin said finishing in the top three was vital. “We want to make finals and go a bit better than last season,” she said. “Cricket Victoria has restructured the competition and what grade you’re in depends on how many teams you have. “Only three teams play finals. The top side goes straight through to the grand final, while second and third play off for a spot.” The Lions sit fourth after four rounds and play Ringwood on Sunday. Meanwhile, the Lions men’s side has a chase ahead of them in Victorian Sub-district Cricket Association’s north-west competition. Facing Brunswick the Lions have the chance to see how they match up against one of the competition’s top sides. Brunswick’s top order stood out on day one, as it made 9-254. Scott Sanders made 81, while Scott Sanders and Karl Mayne also made good contributions. 54 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ NOVEMBER 14, 2017

Next year’s Essendon District Football League grand finals will be held over three weekends. Unlike in previous years when the division 2 and 1 grand finals were played on the same weekend, the league has made the decision to make the grand finals stand-alone. The division 2 grand final will be held on the first weekend in September, with the division 1 grand final the following weekend and the premier division finale on September 15. The EDFL season will begin on Good Friday with Keilor hosting Strathmore and Hillside taking on Taylors Lakes.

Bacchus Marsh’s Jack Lalor has been named in the Victoria Country under-19 team for the national championships being held later this year. Lalor currently plays for Northcote in Victorian Premier Cricket. He’ll be joined in the Victoria Country side by Melton’s Jordan Kight. Kight, who plays for Footscray in Premier Cricket, is the younger brother of Footscray skipper Dylan Kight. Meanwhile, Bacchus Marsh’s Daniel Lalor has been named in the Central Highlands team for the under-16 state championships.

Darley will need to post a big score if its to get the points against Wendouree in the Ballarat Cricket Association. The Lions got off to the perfect start having Wendouree in trouble at 3-4, but the joy ended then, with Wendouree going on to make 5-288. Ben Longhurst who took the opening three wickets was the best bowler, taking 4-78.

Phoenix coach looks to build from within After more than two decades in the coaching caper, new Melton Phoenix coach Mark Parnis is looking forward to taking control of his own senior team. Parnis, who has been involved with several clubs over the journey in junior and reserves coaching roles, decided it was time to take on the challenge of a senior team. Most recently, Parnis has been coaching under-20s at Westside Strikers. “I’ve been coaching for 23 years, I started when I was 18,” he said. “I’ve been a reserves coach and a junior coach for a lot of the time. Between 2008 and 2013, I coached both juniors and reserve teams, but I stretched myself. “I’ve wanted to get into a senior role for a few years now. I heard about this role and knew a few people who had played here.”
Parnis said he wanted to continue to develop the young playing group. The Phoenix finished on the bottom of state league 4 west, but showed signs they could stick with most teams during the season. The average age of the group was between 20 and 23. “I think it’s a promising club and I bring in a fair bit of experience,” Parnis said. “I’ve heard a bit about the players and I’m here to help them develop. They’re a good attacking side, it’s in defence they struggled a bit. “I don’t think there needs to be too much of a shuffle.” Parnis said he would welcome new players, but wouldn’t go out head-hunting. “I’ve got a fairly decent network of players I’ve coached in the past. There maybe a few
guys who have got senior opportunities where they are, who may be looking for a new team. “I’m not one to go out hunting players. Everyone has to earn their spot and show they can play 90 minutes. “If the boys are prepared to work hard, I think we can have a good season.” Parnis said what division they played in next season was still to be decided. After finishing bottom of state league 4 west, they were expected to be relegated, but with changes to other teams, there’s still a chance they will stay in state league 4. “If we do go down we’ll be pushing for promotion,” he said. “If we stay up we want to finish as high as possible and look at finishing top five.” Tara Murray

Melton makes its move By Tara Murray Melton made it two wins in a row as its closes the gap on the top four in Bowls Victoria Pennant division 1, section 1. After a poor start to the season, Melton has started to find form the past two weeks. Having struggled against the top sides so far, Melton turned up the pressure against third-placed Werribee on Saturday. Melton won two of the four rinks, to win 82 (14)-62 (4). Melton secretary John Adams said it was the best side they had on paper all year. “We had a few players back for both the top two sides and we’ve still got a couple of players in the wings. “To win down in Werribee is especially pleasing.” David George’s rink won 27-6 and Conrad Dawson’s rink won by two shots. Craig Norris, in his first round as skip, lost by two shots while
Ray Gnjidic’s rink lost by five shots. Adams said club captain Travis Kelly and George had really good games after struggling early in the season. Despite the win, Melton remains fifth on the ladder, but the margin to fourth-placed Sunbury has been reduced to 11 after Sunbury played in a tie. It seems like it will be a battle for the third and fourth spots over the rest of the season, with the top two sides out clear. Melton’s next match is against Brunswick, and Adams said they would take a lot of confidence into the match. “We should win and if we play the way we’ve played the last two weeks we’ll get the win. Hopefully now we have to do just fine-tuning of the rinks.” Melton’s second side opened its account on Saturday, defeating Yarraville-Footscray (2) 89 (16)- 70 (2). Melton sits 10th after six rounds. Melton’s top four sides all got wins at the weekend.
Melton has a week off, with the pennant competition not running this week due to the Vic Open. Adams said not many of their bowlers would be competing in the open. Meanwhile, Bacchus Marsh Gold’s unbeaten start to the Central Highlands Bowls Division’s top grade has ended. Facing Kyneton Golf, which was also undefeated, Gold lost 105 (14)-97 (4). Phil Minniti and Glenn Arthur led the winning rinks for Gold. Bacchus Marsh Blue had a tough day against Gisborne. It was a complete whitewash, with Gisborne winning 158 (18)-58 (0). Romsey won three rinks in its 105 (16)-95 (2) win against Trentham and Kyneton won a thriller against Lancefield. Just one shot separated the two teams with Kyneton winning 94 (14)-93 (4). In division 2, Diggers Rest lost to Macedon, while Diggers Rest’s second side lost to Trentham in division 3.
St Anthonys hot form with the bat has continued in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s B-grade competition. Coming off scores of 299 and 334, the Saints had been firing on all cylinders the past two rounds. But facing Eynesbury, which is also undefeated after three rounds, presented a new challenge. The the Saints made 297, being bowled out in the 69th over. Saints skipper Cameron Clayton said there was a lot of belief in the side at the moment. “We wanted to win the toss and bat with the warm weather,” he said. “We just stuck to team rules and did the basic things.” The Saints shared the runs around with four players making at least 40. Simon Blanks led the way making 93. Clayton, who finished 44 not out, said they weren’t relying on one player. “Nathan Dantonio [who is coming off two centuries] was out in the first over for one,” he said. “It’s promising now we don’t have to rely on the same guys, with anyone who can stand up and make runs.” Luke Castle took four wickets for the Eagles and his brother Hayden Castle took three. With the Eagles batting well this season, Clayton knows they have a challenge ahead. Early wickets will be the key, with the Eagles top three batsmen averaging more than 40 each. “Obviously with them undefeated and us being undefeated it’s a chance to see where both sides are at,” Clayton said. “They haven’t had to chase this season, let alone chase 300.” Bacchus Marsh’s batsmen had a day out in the McIntyre Cup competition against Lancefield. The Bulls, who are undefeated, made a massive 8-345. James Lidgett, who had made starts in the first three rounds, turned it on making 112. Skipper Ben Robertson made 73, which included a 132-run partnership with Lidgett. Dennis O’Loughlin chipped in with 56. Meanwhile, Diggers Rest Bulla’s game against Woodend will be a one-day game, with no play possible on Saturday. Riddell is well on its way to victory against Rupertswood. The Bombers are 1-66 needing 95 for the win. Romsey made 9-275 against Sunbury with skipper Ben Way making an unbeaten 175. Tara Murray 55 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ NOVEMBER 14, 2017

Melton Junior’s coach takes out AFL award Melton Junior Football Club’s Troy Scoble has been named AFL Victoria’s Stan Alves Youth Coach of the Year. Scoble, who has coached at the Bloods for the past two years, was shocked to be named the winner at an awards ceremony earlier this month. Having previously stayed away from coaching at the junior level, Scoble has had a big impact in his first foray. “It was a bit of surprise really,” he said. “It was nice to be acknowledged in the final four. It started off being named the region youth coach of the year and then AFL Victoria selects a final four. “All the steps along the way have been pleasing.”
In two years as coach at Melton, Scoble has led the under-16s to back-to-back Riddell District Football League premierships. The same group of players has predominately played both seasons, winning flags as bottom-age and then top-age players. A team ethos has been a big focus for Scoble throughout his coaching career. He previously coached Riddell’s senior side for five years, including to the 2013 RDFL premiership, and is an assistant coach at the Western Jets. Scoble said ensuring everyone got the most out of their football was really important. Part of this is making sure everyone gets even time on the field and implementing whiteboard sessions and player driven reviews.
“I’ve been able to see results at TAC Cup and senior level by doing this,” he said. “It’s about focusing on developing the entire list. Everyone pays rego, so everyone deserves to be developed. “That’s the reason we’ve had success and developed the last couple of years.” Scoble said he couldn’t take all the credit for the past two years at the Bloods, saying it was a team effort. “When I first agreed to take on the role, I needed to have someone to help me due to my Western Jets commitments. “Cam Hanley’s support has been vital and we’ve really helped each other over the last couple of years. His wife Nat is team manager and my wife Michelle is involved as well. The
Centrals reap rewards By Tara Murray Melton Centrals has enjoyed the sweet taste of victory in the CV Women’s Community Cricket’s north-west one-day competition. Fielding a side for the first time this season, Centrals had shown encouraging signs in its early games. On Sunday, it put it all together against St Anthonys. Centrals captain-coach Candace Hulett was thrilled. “It is really exciting, seeing the hard work the girls had put in during the pre-season and first few games pay off,” she said. “It’s definitely the highlight for me this season.” Sent in, Centrals posted 2-231 from their 36 overs. Hulett, an experienced cricketer, top-scored with 90 not out, which included 15 boundaries. Hulett though was quick to give the praise to opener Rhiannah Jordan, who made 64 not out before retiring. “She hit her first 50 and I was more impressed with that,” she said. “You could see how happy she was and she was really chuffed. To see her hard work pay off was really pleasing.” With the runs on the board, Centrals were confident they could get the win, but Hulett knew it wouldn’t be easy. Despite St Anthonys posting its biggest score of the season, the side fell short by making 5-176. “We had to work hard to get the win,” she said. “St Anthonys still batted well and we had to bowl well. “Everyone who had a bowl, bowled well, and the wickets were shared around. “It was a good team win and everyone contributed. Even if they didn’t get a wicket or made runs, they stopped runs in the field.” Among those playing on Sunday was 12-year-old Summer Lumley-White, who was playing her first cricket match. She’s one of four 12-year-olds in the team. Hulett said that along with the win, it was encouraging that there were more players wanting to get involved. The 10 to 11 players of the side’s early days have become 14 or 15. She said the club was already looking to the future and the possibility of a second side in the near future. “We would love to have two teams,” she said. “Anyone who wants to join us, come and train … if you train you will get a game. The more the merrier.” She said the whole club was behind the women’s team and had been from the start. Centrals are seventh on the ladder with one win and four losses. This week, they will play EMP/Williamstown Congs. In the Victorian Turf Cricket Association’s women’s competition, Sydenham-Hillside defeated Westmeadows. Having made 5-105, the Sharks bowled the Warriors out for 100. 56 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ NOVEMBER 14, 2017
committee, led by Matt Kerr, and the great parent network have all played a big role as well. “It was good to have Cam, Nat, Michelle, my son Chase, Matt and Jo from the club at the awards night.” Scoble, who will again be part of the Western Jets coaching set-up next season, said he would wait and see whether he would continue at Melton next season. “I’ve really enjoyed this group and if someone else wants to step up and take on a coaching role I’m happy to step back. I will have some involvement in the club at some level. This experience is something I wish I did before coaching at Riddell and at TAC Cup level.” Tara Murray
Bulls coach’s youth work earns a gong Jenna Fowlie’s passion for cricket has been recognised with Cricket Victoria’s female coach of the year award for 2016-17. The award, announced last week, is reward for Fowlie’s work with the Bacchus Marsh Cricket Club’s Milo Cricket program to get more participants and volunteers involved. Fowlie said she was shocked to receive the honour. She had already been named the Central Highlands female coach of the year. “It’s pretty good to be recognised,” she said. “I got an email about a month and a half ago saying I was a finalist, but I forgot about it. “It’s reassuring that I’m heading in the right direction with what I’m doing.” Fowlie started running the Bulls’ Milo Cricket program after a request from her father, Bacchus Marsh club president Darran Fowlie. Having played at the club as a junior, she was happy to give back. “I’ve been involved for 10 to 12 years,” she said. “I had done some Milo Cricket sessions in schools through Central Highlands. Dad asked if I could run the program.” While her efforts with Bacchus Marsh are what won her the award, Fowlie’s work isn’t limited to the Bulls. She was instrumental in setting up the Ballarat Cricket Association’s junior girls program last season and has been the Central Highlands under-14 girls’ coach for a number of years. Fowlie said she was quite content continuing to coach the younger girls. “You’re getting them into the sport and program at under-14 level,” she said. “I feel like I’m more useful at this level and trying to get them started.” Coaching is part of Fowlie’s passion for getting more females into the sport. “I did some research last year into the barriers of adolescent female participation,” she said. “I know I loved it growing up and enjoyed playing. Getting girls into cricket is a big passion of mine.” Fowlie, who has been playing for Napoleons/Sebastopol Cricket Club, said that one day she would love to set up a Bacchus Marsh women’s side. Caroline Springs’ Shelley Charlie was a finalist in the female coach of the year. Having never coached before, Charlie took charge of the club’s girls team that won the first Molly Strano Cup. Small car big on performance By Derek Ogden, Marque Motoring When micro cars first came out, the joke went, you need two – one for each foot. The roller-skate analogy could equally be applied to the new Hyundai Kona – but for one thing. In latest technology, comfort and convenience, the small SUV is kitted out almost as well as its big brothers, Tucson and Santa Fe. Like its bigger siblings, the Kona comes in four levels of specification – Active, Active with Safety Pack, Elite and Highlander. There’s a choice of two petrol drivetrains – a 2.0-litre, naturally-aspirated unit mated with six-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel-drive, or a 1.6-litre turbo-petrol unit, matched to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and all-wheel-drive. Prices start at $24,500, plus on-road costs, for the Active 2.0 six-speed automatic 2WD, and top out at $36,000 for the Highlander 1.6 turbo AWD with seven-speed double-clutch automatic. The front of the Kona is striking, with daytime running lights being separated from the main headlamp assembly Active has 16-inch wheels with a classic five-spoke design featuring twin spokes; Elite’s 17-inch wheels have a 20-spoke design; Highlander’s 18-inch wheels feature the classic five-spoke look with twin offset spokes in a contrasting black and machined metal finish. Kona will seat five with ample leg room front and back for the average size person. Luggage space is 361 litres with the back seat in place, expanding to an impressive 1143 litres with the rear seat folded. Upmarket features include a head-up display in Highlander projecting a virtual image of drive-related information – speed, audio, cruise

Safety features include forward collision assist, blind spot warning, lane keeping assist, driver inattention warning, high beam assist and rear cross traffic alert for use when reversing out of a parking spot.
DRIVING During a launch drive out of Canberra and through the Yass Valley, the 2.0-litre took some urging off the mark and when pressed did so to the accompaniment of a harsh note. At city speeds, the powertrain was unruffled, producing an adequate ride and handling experience. The 1.6 turbo, on the other hand, was sweet as, slipping between cogs smoothly, resulting in a responsive and spirited drive.
Steering was just as positive and all-wheel drive made for a sure -footed stride on gravel. Kona has benefitted from input by Australian suspension engineers, hence the assuredness of both front-wheel and all-wheel drive models. Hyundai admits it’s coming to the small SUV segment late, leaving the market to the likes of the Honda HR-V, Mazda CX-3, Mitsubishi ASX, Subaru XV and Toyota C-HR. But local executives maintain extra time and effort put into the Kona have enabled the company to produce a vehicle with superior performance and packaging. Over to you, punters.
