A time to remember Thousands are expected to gather in Melton to commemorate the dead and celebrate the living for Remembrance Day this weekend. Saturday, November 11, marks the 99th anniversary of the armistice that ended World War I. Ben Arthur, Kevin Murray and Ian Lawrey will be among those observing a minute’s silence at 11am in memory of those who died or suffered in wars and armed conflicts. More than half a million poppies are expected to be sold in Victoria in the annual Poppy Appeal with a group of Melton Returned and Services League volunteers selling them to raise funds to help current and former service men and women. Mr Lawrey, Melton sub-branch president, is appreciative of the commitment shown by members and volunteers who make the appeal a success. “Year in, year out, our community rallies together to support the Poppy Appeal in the lead up to Remembrance Day,” he said. “I would like to thank the local community who support our sub-branch and wear their poppy in November.” Residents are invited to gather at the cenotaph in Melton from 10.30am on Saturday to observe a minute of silence at 11am. Thieves cop extra attention By Esther Lauaki Caroline Springs police are cracking down on shoplifting and anti-social behaviour to curb repeat offending. Plain clothes police made up to 20 arrests across five operations in as many weeks at Caroline Springs shopping centre. Police, with the help of centre loss prevention officers and security, made eight arrests over a six-hour blitz last Wednesday. Senior Sergeant Jason Dolman said the “grassroots approach” was aimed at simple

offending with potential to contribute to more serious crime. “Over the five operations that have been conducted, we’ve made a number of arrests,” he said. “They’ve included persons from outside the area … we’re doing our bit to deter the people coming in and stealing.” Among the offenders, a 62-year-old man and 58-year-old woman were caught attempting to shoplift makeup in a pram and other items in the woman’s handbag. In other incidents, a 52-year-old woman was seen placing meat

trays into her handbag and down her pants and a 62-year-old man was nabbed placing toothpaste into a pocket and tea towels down his pants. All will appear at Sunshine Magistrates Court at a later date. “As the common, essential goods become more expensive, people start to steal them,” Senior Sergeant Dolman said. “Things like petrol and meat are no longer a cheap commodity – and the need for police to target these thefts increases.” He said the aim of his officers was to deliver

proactive work in the community to drive down crime. “I think [Caroline Springs police] have to be more proactive and out there engaging with the community,” he said. “We will continue to deliver our shop-steal operations, breath-testing operations and our petrol drive-off operations. That will help drive down crime and reinforce the perception of safety.” CS Square shopping centre manager Rod Kennedy said the safety and wellbeing of customers and retailers was the “No.1 priority”.

Fears for dumped kittens By Dewi Sherry

Power of music shines through More than 800 Melton students raised their voices to be counted as part of a national music initiative last week. Kurunjang Secondary College and Wedge Park Primary School collaborated for the Music: Count Us In event where students across the country sing the same song, on the same day, at the same time. They joined more than half a million Australians, including children from 3400 schools, to sing an original tune called Shine Together last Thursday in celebration of musical education. Music director Joanne Zerafa said it was the second time students from the schools had participated in the event. They had spent weeks rehearsing the piece while also putting together a repertoire of songs for a rock concert they will be hosting at the school later this month. “Approximately 850 students in total from the two schools took part in the event which was a true indication of the power of music,” Ms Zerafa said. “We wanted everyone to understand that music plays one of the most important roles in our daily lives. “We use music when we are happy, sad, funerals, weddings, exercise, parties and all other celebrations. With the introduction of mobile music on iPod and phones, we can use music to survive our daily lives.”

Ten kittens were found dumped in a cardboard box in Melton last Saturday. Founder of Western Suburbs Cat and Kitten Rescue, Nathan Miles, said the kittens, believed to be three or four weeks old, were dumped near Arnolds Creek. They were left without their mother, riddled with fleas, very skinny and very weak, Mr Miles said. “The kittens had been left in that box for a very long period of time. At this age, they should not be without their mother,” he said. This is not the first time Mr Miles has seen a situation like this in Melton. “Every year this type of thing happens in the lead-up to Christmas. It is prevalent across the western suburbs, especially in Melton,” he said. Animal foster carer Maryann Russell has taken in the litter and is nursing the kittens back to health. “When the kittens first came to me they were very frail and weak. We had to hand feed some of the little ones to make sure they were eating. It’s only early days, we’re hoping all of them survive,” Mrs Russell said. Mrs Russell hopes that in four weeks the kittens will be able to be desexed and vaccinated, then put up for adoption. Two vehicles were impounded in a recent road blitz by Caroline Springs police. An 18-year-old Hillside P-plater lost his licence for 12 months and had his car impounded for a month after recording a positive drink-driving test on October 18 along Caroline Springs Boulevard. The man will face the Sunshine Magistrates Court at a later date. On October 22, a 20-year-old Sydenham man was caught “fish-tailing” on Melton Highway. Police intercepted the vehicle, which was impounded for 30 days at a cost of $982. The Sydenham man will face the Sunshine Magistrates Court at a later date.

Rockbank’s NBN work gets rolling

By Esther Lauaki A Bacchus Marsh mother is calling on Moorabool businesses to help fund an education seminar so parents can learn more about DiGeorge syndrome. Three-year-old Breana was born with the syndrome, more accurately known as 22q11.2 deletion syndrome, which is caused when a small part of chromosome 22 is missing. There is no cure and the only treatments are for the symptoms of the disorder. Breana’s mother Nicole Zois said the effects of the disorder include congenital heart disease, epilepsy and respiratory problems.

“She has spent a lot of time in hospital, I would say a year of her life,” Ms Zois said. “It’s a matter of treating each symptom as it comes up. Breana has had three heart surgeries and I’ve lost count of how many other surgeries she’s had.” Ms Zois is organising the seminar to help other families to understand the disorder and, despite fundraising efforts, she’s still $1200 off a $3000 goal to make it happen. “It is believed to be the second most common genetic disorder behind Down syndrome, yet most have never heard of it,” she said. “The seminar will help to educate parents, caregivers and patients with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome. It will give families and doctors a chance to connect and discuss the latest research, treatment options and hope for the future.”

Ms Zois said the seminar would also offer a support network to Moorabool families. “We’ve got three other children and unfortunately, in families like ours, the older children tend to miss out on things,” Ms Zois said.

Rockbank’s move into the National Broadband Network (NBN) digital age has begun. Construction is gearing up to connect more than 300 homes and businesses to the network. Crews are checking pits and pipes, laying the fibre backbone for the network and installing node cabinets throughout the area, with people expected to be able to make the switch from April next year. Ebony Aitken, head of NBN local, said construction of the access network might mean residents and businesses experienced some disruption. “We apologise for any inconvenience experienced while this important work is carried out,” Ms Aitken said. “By April next year, many local residents and businesses will have access to fast broadband; something that has been desperately needed in regional and rural Australia for many years.” Many properties in the region are already eligible to connect to the nbn through fixed wireless and the Sky Muster satellite service. Melton mayor is a team player By Esther Lauaki Teamwork is the way forward for Melton council, according to new mayor Bob Turner. This will be the second time the experienced Coburn ward councillor has been sworn in as the council’s leader, having served in the role in 2013-14. He was elected at a special meeting on November 2 to replace Sophie Ramsey, who filled the position for the past year.

Cr Turner said it was an exciting time to be mayor. “I’m really looking forward to tackling the challenges ahead, and will continue to advocate on behalf of our residents to ensure the city continues to prosper and grow,” he said. “The next 12 months will be an exciting challenge that I look forward to with great enthusiasm. “In leading this council, I look forward to pooling our strengths and working together as a team to serve the best interests

of our community. I am determined to lead council in achieving the aspirations of the community.” Cr Turner was first elected to council in 2008 and re-elected in 2012 and 2016. He served as deputy mayor in 2012-13 and 2016-17. Fellow Coburn ward councillor Ken Hardy was elected deputy mayor. Melton council’s second last meeting of the year will be on Monday, November 13, at the civic centre from 7pm.

A model day out gets airborne Large-scale model aircraft, hamburgers and hot dogs will all be part of a fun-fuelled Melton Model Aircraft Association open day. The free event will give visitors the chance to fly a radio-controlled aircraft ranging from older warbirds to racing aircraft and gas turbine jets. Melton fire danger plea Melton residents are being urged to prepare for the coming fire season before the summer heat kicks in. The council is calling on residents to set up plans with family, friends and neighbours so they can stay safe on hot, dry and windy days. Mayor Sophie Ramsey said it was imperative to reduce fire risks by removing weeds, firewood and other rubbish from around buildings and fencelines. “It is important to plan ahead about when to leave, and where to go, to stay safe,” she said. “If you live or work close to bush, grassland, parks or paddocks, you could be at risk of fire this summer. “I can’t stress enough how important is to be fire ready and have a fire plan. It might just save your life.”

Djerriwarrh takes stock The long-term future of Djerriwarrh Health Services has been bolstered by an injection of more than $10 million of state money, the services’ annual general meeting has been told. The capital investment to Bacchus Marsh and Melton regional hospital was discussed as re-appointed administrator John Ballard lauded the positive year for the health service. “It is clear Djerriwarrh has robust clinical governance and processes, systematic training, strong continuing professional development, the right leadership and dedicated staff committed to meeting the needs of our rapidly expanding and increasingly diverse communities,” Dr Ballard said. Within the $10.6 million investment, $9 million is going towards the Bacchus Marsh and Melton regional hospital theatre

Learning about leaders Pupils at Brookside P-9 College had the chance to ask questions and learn more about what it’s like to be mayor last week. Year 4 pupils were paid a visit by then Melton mayor Sophie Ramsey as part of their studies on local government this term. Teacher Catherine Gatt said the visit gave the children an insight that they might not otherwise have. “In order for students to develop their sense of belonging and responsibility in their local community these studies are paramount,” Ms Gatt said. “This is their first formal educative introduction to government and I believe that students have developed an informed awareness of their citizenship in their local community.

“We felt that the most authentic experience we could afford them was to meet the leader of our local government. “Students studied the Melton website and prepared questions to ask her. “They were undoubtedly excited and quite anticipatory of her visit.” Cr Ramsey spoke to the youngsters about the structure of local government and what services it provides. One pupil was invited to don the mayoral robes and medallion while learning about their significance. “That will forever be a special memory for the student she selected,” Ms Gatt said. What is your connection to Moorabool? I live in Ballarat but I’ve worked at Kryal Castle in Leigh Creek for the past five years. You run the educational programs at Kryal Castle. What are the quirks and perks of your job?

It’s so much fun to work here. Sometimes I get to be a princess and sometimes I get to be a prince. The entertainment side of my role means that I do about seven shows a day and write the shows to meet demand. I get to work at a castle and be whatever the kids want to see me as. What does the role involve? It umbrellas a lot of different jobs. I’ve got a background in performance and history. I’m lucky enough to be able to combine these into my job. We run murder mysteries, education programs, melodramas, I help out with the arena shows with jousting Knights. I could be asked to do all sorts of things in one day.

What would people be surprised to know about you? When I was a kid I used to love Cluedo and murder mystery games so much. What are you passionate about?

When I first started at Kryal Castle I had an interest and curiosity in history, performance and writing shows and I’ve been able to develop that love into a role that gives me a creative outlet to entertain and educate people. One of the most beautiful parts of this job is that you get to fulfill kids dreams.

Bird & Burger lives in a premises long previously occupied by a similar operation with different management. But this new lot are doing more than maintaining the location’s chicken shop tradition – they’re doing so splendidly. The interior is mostly black and white, with eat-in seating options down to stools and a bench on one wall and a handful of snazzy ottomans facing the front window. There are, however, tall tables and more stools outside. My heart sinks a little when I see the plastic cutlery on one of counters, fearing these useless tool may be served with my chicken. Not only am I supplied with metal cutlery, my meal is presented on a black platter, with chips and coleslaw in similarly angular bowls. It all looks marvellous. Tastes that way, too. The chips ($3.95) are hot, liberally salted and fine. The $6.50 for my coleslaw seems, at first blush, a little steep for what I’m thinking is just a side dish to a chicken meal. But here’s the thing – it is worth every cent. This is quite possibly the best coleslaw I’ve ever had in a chook shop. Made mostly of red cabbage, and boasting subtle whiffs of tarragon and dill, it is well dressed without being sopping, has crunch yet is pliable – and is 100 per cent wonderful. My chicken falls into the “Yes, It Can Be Done” category. That’s right – even the very heart of the breast meat is as juicy as the rest of it.

SPORT Golden day for Bacchus By Tara Murray Bacchus Marsh Gold proved too strong for Romsey in Central Highlands Bowls Division’s top division. Sitting at opposite ends of the ladder after the first two rounds, Romsey had a task ahead of it if it was to get its first win of the season. The rinks of Cameron Austin and Daniel Fortune did their part recording wins for Romsey, but it wasn’t enough. Bacchus Marsh’s Shannon Clements led his rink to a 35-13 win and Phil Minniti’s rink won 28-21, to give Bacchus Marsh a 99 (14)-83 (4) victory. Bacchus Marsh Gold is one of two unbeaten sides, with Kyneton Golf maintaining its winning record against Gisborne. Both sides entered the match unbeaten and it was Golf that came out on top against last season’s premiers. Ricky and Wayne Turner and Anthony Mathison led winning rinks for Golf, with Sam Boslem’s two shot win the only winning rink for Gisborne in the 103 (16)-88 (2) result. Lancefield got its first win of the season, with a big win against Trentham. The rinks of Aaron Young and Michael Linehan set up the win for Lancefield, with wins of 36-9 and 36-11. Trentham won two rinks in the 111 (14)-63 (4) win. Kyneton had an easy win in the other match of the round against Bacchus Marsh Blue. Mark Smoljo’s rink won by 25 shots, as Kyneton’s three winning rinks all had big wins on the day. John Banks led the winning rink for Blue, in the 118 (16)-67 (2) result. In division 2, Diggers Rest, Gisborne Red, Kyneton and Woodend all had solid wins, while Kyneton Blue, Macedon, Trentham, and Kyneton Red got the points in division 3. Meanwhile, in Bowls Victoria Pennant division 1, section 1, Melton returned to the winners’ list. Having not won since round 1, Melton was able to turn it around against Darebin City, winning 84 (15)-67 (3). Melton secretary John Adams said they played some good bowls on Saturday. “We made a few positional changes and brought in a few players. “It worked yesterday and hopefully it’s a trend that can continue. We need to continue together and fine-tune things as the season goes along.” The rinks of Ray Gnjidk and Conrad Dawson got the wins on Saturday, while David George’s rink shared the points. Greg McRae, who normally plays at the third player, stepped up and skippered on Saturday, but suffered a loss. The win, Melton’s second of the season, leaves it fifth, 16 points behind fourth-placed Sunbury.

Sydenham-Hillside defeated Deer Park in the other match of the Melton group.

Melton has announced its first signing of the off season, signing Bacchus Marsh premiership star Matt Denham. Denham, who played junior football at the Bloods before moving to the Cobras and playing interstate, is the first recruit for new coach Aaron Tymms. The Bloods have lost ruckman Mark Maric, who has joined Essendon District Football League side Tullamarine, and assistant coach Michael Licciardo who has joined East Keilor.

Melton Thoroughbreds’ below par 2017 season has resulted in relegation for next year’s Big V season. The Thoroughbreds won just four games this season in division 1 after being among the contenders the previous few seasons. Next season they will play in division 2. The new Thoroughbreds women’s side will also play in division 2.

Consistency the key as Royals look for outright win Consistency is bringing results for Melton South Royals in Victorian Turf Cricket Association’s west A1 competition. The Royals have been strong with both the bat and ball early in the season, something they’ve struggled with in the past. Their new-found consistency couldn’t have been more evident on Saturday on day one against Footscray ANA, with the Royals claiming first innings points. The bowlers did a demolition job bowling out Footscray ANA for just 54. Royals’ president Paul Davies said the whole bowling group performed well. The Royals wasted no time with the bat, making 5-157, before declaring and leaving Footscray to face four overs at the end of the day. Davies said after trying to get an outright win last week and not having success, they were keen to get one this week. “Paul’s [Hetherington] idea was to get to 100 in front and then put them back in to try and get a couple of wickets. “We’ve got every chance to get an outright win this week.” Nathan Waites top-scored with 57, while Hetherington chipped in with 44 not out. A win would be the Royals second for the season.

Davies said they could have easily won both their first two games if they had taken their chances in the field. He said the biggest thing early on had been not only consistency, but everyone sharing the workload. “It hasn’t just been left up to one or two players,” he said. “It’s been an even contribution and getting performances from both our bowlers and batsmen. “It’s something we lacked until the end of last season when we got on a roll.” It was a good day for the Royals second side which made 8-189, also against Footscray ANA. Jason Hibbert in his first second XI game and first turf game, finished 86 not out after coming in at 2-15.

Baccus Marsh building the foundation for next season Bacchus Marsh is hoping its recruits for next season will more than cover the departures from the Ballarat Football League club. The Cobras, who played off in this year’s seniors and reserves grand finals, have had a mixture of ins and outs in the off season. Cobras coach Travis Hodgson said they were still talking to a few players about trying to get them across. “We’ve had two outs and three ins so far,” he said. “No one else wants to leave. “We know we had some areas that we had to improve. Hopefully we can retain the rest of the list and still add a couple more players.” The first signings for the Cobras are VFL players Jake Owen and Jacob Chisari, and

Chisari’s brother Matthew. Owen and Jacob Chisari were playing at Williamstown, and had been on the radar of AFL clubs a couple of years ago after being standouts at under-18 level. Hodgson said Owen will add to the Cobras’ forward line. “Jake’s a pretty good player from what we’ve seen,” he said. “We struggled across half-forward this year. Rhys McNay was solid for us, but he did his shoulder early in the grand final, and we struggled. “Jake will play centre half-forward for us and he’s had development league success in the past.” Jacob Chisari, who played seven VFL games

this season, will play in the midfield, while his brother will play across half-forward and half-back. Hodgson said they always knew they were a chance to get both brothers once one had signed. “Jacob was first cab off the rank. “He suggested that his brother might be keen for a change as well.” Kane White looks set to miss most of the year with a knee injury, but Trent Angwin, Simon Lafranchi and Jarrah Maksymow will be ready to go next season. Blake Graham, who played in the grand final but spent most of the year in the TAC Cup, is expected to be available full-time next year.

On the downside, the Cobras have confirmed the losses of Dean Heta and Matt Denham. Hodgson said the two weren’t leaving because they didn’t want to be at the club. “It’s always disappointing to lose players,” he said. “Matt has been a handy contributor over the last two years. He’s a one-pointer at both here and Melton. Most of his mates still play at Melton so he wants to play with them. “Dean had a big impact this season. Jones gets the job done By Tara Murray Melton’s Brad Jones is making a habit of hitting the winning runs. Better known as a bowler, Jones has been the hero late in the innings for Melton in the past two weeks in Victorian Sub-district Cricket Association north-west. After he steadied the side and hit the winning runs against Werribee in their two-day clash the previous week, on Saturday he went one better in the Lions’ T20 clash against Taylors Lakes. Melton needed eight runs off the final over with Jones and Matthew Stead at the crease. After five good deliveries from Yoshan Kumara, the Lions needed three to win off the final ball. Melton coach Nathan Geisler said that while there was some nerves in the shed, there was also confidence that Jones could get the job done.

Ash Sweet was the pick of the Melton bowlers taking two wickets, while Nathan Taylor top-scored with 36 and Jake Thornton-Gielen made 25. Geisler, who played his first game of the season, said Taylor and Thornton-Gielen were forming a good partnership. “They have been good the last two weeks,” he said. “They’ve batted smartly and got us in positions to finish off chases.” The win keeps Melton undefeated after three rounds. With a poor T20 record in the past two years, this victory is a boost. “For 35 overs we were really in control,” Geisler said. “The last five overs we lost our way a bit. T20 can be tricky, especially coming from two-day cricket the previous round. We’ll bank the win and look forward.” Melton is one of three teams with a perfect record. The other two are Williamstown and this week’s Melton opponent, Brunswick. After the T20 round, the competition reverts to the two-day format. Geisler said the coming round would give the side a chance to test where it is at. “They will be one of the teams we’ll be trying to beat come finals time,” he said of Brunswick. “We’re in a good position and we still haven’t played our best cricket.

Bacchus Marsh has continued its good start to the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s McIntyre Cup season. Shaun Taylor top-scored with 49 after coming in at No.8, while James Lidgett (40) and Dennis O’Loughlin (44) also had solid contributions as the Bulls enjoyed some batting practice. The Bulls are on top after three rounds and are one of two teams to win all three matches. This week they will face Lancefield, which is coming off its first win of the season. Diggers Rest Bulla needed plenty of wickets against Riddell – but they didn’t come. Resuming at 4-27 and chasing 98, the Bombers lost another two wickets before getting to the total and pushing on to make 6-229. The win keeps the Bombers’ unbeaten start to the season alive. In B grade, the Bulls got their first win of the season by beating Rupertswood. Having made 303 on day one, the Bulls bowled Rupertswood out for 160. Eynesbury and St Anthonys have set up a mouth-watering clash this weekend, with both sides undefeated. Having done the damage with the bat on day one, they easily accounted for Kyneton and Ashfield respectively. Wallan also remains undefeated, while Gisborne accounted for Macedon.
