Devils’ double delight Darley Football Club revelled in double premiership joy in the Ballarat Football League on Saturday. Celebrations started for the Devils when their reserves came from behind to beat arch rival Bacchus Marsh 8.13 (61)-7.5 (47). It was then the seniors’ turn. Taking on Bacchus Marsh as well, the Devils were in control all day, delivering a 14.13 (97)-6.11 (47) victory. ■ For more on both grand finals, go to sport starting on page 37

Triple-0 taxi ride shock By Esther Lauaki Ambulance Victoria has come under fire after a Bacchus Marsh woman called triple-0 for an ambulance and was sent a taxi. The 29-year-old woman called for an ambulance about 7.30am last Monday after suffering stomach pains while she was home alone. Andrew Porter, father of the woman’s partner, has lodged a complaint with Ambulance Victoria over the incident. Mr Porter said he arrived home while the woman was on the phone and spoke to the

operator when he heard there was a two-hour wait for an ambulance and a taxi would be dispatched from Ballarat. “She was curled up in a foetal position, had punctured breathing and was pasty,” Mr Porter told 3AW. “I thought the operator was cavalier, flippant – I was really surprised at the tone on the other end of the phone. “At some point they’re going to get this wrong and it will cost a life.” Ambulance Victoria emergency operations executive director Mick Stephenson said the case was being reviewed and that

“in exceptional cases” a taxi could be dispatched. “We have contacted the patient as part of this review to discuss any concerns,” he said. “All calls to triple-0 are assessed on their severity and Ambulance Victoria always prioritise emergency ambulances to the sickest patients first. Through our social transport policy, taxis can only be arranged for patients in exceptional circumstances when non-urgent care is required but the patient has no other means of transport.” The woman was treated for a severe bladder and urinary tract infection.

A recent review by Ambulance Victoria of its revised clinical repsonse model found that “an estimated 50,000 cases every year that would have received an emergency ambulance are now being correctly referred to an alternate health service or provided with self-care advice”. Earlier this month, eight integrated Country Fire Authority brigades, including Melton, completed training so firefighters can assist in life-threatening medical emergencies. Ballarat and Bendigo will be among other brigades to develop this capability later this year.

Ballan visit for a cup legend Melbourne Cup-winning trainer Mick Robins will visit Ballan next month as part of the Emirates Melbourne Cup Tour. Robins, a former coal miner from Broken Hill, had only held his trainer licence for three months when he experienced his first Melbourne Cup win in 1968 with Rain Lover. The following year Rain Lover won again, becoming the first horse since the famous Archer to achieve back-to-back Melbourne Cup victories. The $200,000 Emirates Melbourne Cup is visiting 31 destinations across Australia and New Zealand, with a stop at Ballan on October 11 before returning to Flemington for the race that stops a nation in November. Victoria Racing Club chairman Amanda Elliott said she was thrilled to have Robins join this year’s tour. “In this, its milestone 15th year, what better way to celebrate this iconic piece of Australia’s cultural heritage than to have heroes of the Melbourne Cup like Mick on the tour in Ballan,” she said. The mourning father of a teenage girl who died in a high-speed crash last week has shared his grief at losing his “baby girl”. Jacqueline Vodden died at the scene where the van she was travelling in crashed after a police chase along the Western Highway near Ballan. The allegedly stolen Hiace van collided with two trucks about 2.30pm on Tuesday (September 19). Police said the van failed to stop when ordered to do so and had been pursued near the Ballan-Daylesford Road turnoff on the Western Highway for about four minutes when the crash occurred. Jacqueline’s father, Scott Vodden, told of his heartache on Facebook. “As I sit here, pain and emotions with tears

running down my face … this is the hardest thing I have to write and no parent should have to [do this],” he posted. “I’m one of the proudest dads you will ever meet when I found out your mum was pregnant I was the happiest person in the world. “So many fun times, just me and you, I have so many memories. “I never wanted to miss … walking my baby girl down the aisle on her wedding day as I know you would of been stunning as you were the most gorgeous girl in the world.” Jacqueline is remembered by her father as a girl with a “heart of gold”. “I will never never ever forget you until we meet again love you and give Grandma and Grandad a hug and kiss from me, I will talk to you from time to time, don’t give cheek back … You’re now my angel.”

Kids of all ages will have a new playground to enjoy in Hillside before the coming summer ends. Final construction is under way on the brand new playground at Kenswick Drive Reserve, with exercise equipment and soccer goal also being added. A new shelter, seating and picnic areas are other additions being put in place as part of the upgrade. The new features are expected to be unveiled before the end of the year. Melton mayor Sophie Ramsey said the reserve makeover had been designed with the community’s feedback in mind, and was developed after a detailed consultation process. “Previously, this park had seen better days – there was no play or exercise equipment at all, and the grassed areas were rough and patchy,” Cr Ramsey said. “I look forward to seeing this reserve become an active outdoor space for the whole community.”

A 22-year-old man has been caught driving from court where he lost his licence earlier in the day, police say. Greensborough Highway Patrol members pulled over the Melton West man for using his mobile phone on Plenty Road in Reservoir about 1.25pm on September 15. Police said he was asked for his licence and admitted that he didn’t have one and disclosed he had left court earlier in the day after being disqualified from driving for 12 months.

A lesson in traffic safety By Esther Lauaki

Lockdown for charity

Melton council has given the green light to plans for a new traffic education school. Plans for the school, to be built at the Bridge Road sports and community hub at Atherstone, will feature a simulated track including road signs and signals. An open air classroom in landscaped surrounds, as well as barbecue and toilets are also planned. Melton mayor Sophie Ramsey said the project was designed to support community education in traffic safety.

It has taken Brandon Richards five years to grow and maintain his dreadlocks but he’s about to lose them all at the hands of a Melton dog groomer. The 22-year-old Gisborne plumber is shedding his mane in a bid to raise at least $5000 for Muscular Dystrophy Australia – with more than $4000 already raised last week. Hair of the Dog groomers in Melton pledged to donate a dollar from each appointment to the charity and the business offered to groom Brandon as well, rounding out their fundraising effort to $400. Brandon will go under the shears at the Dreadlocks for Dystrophy event he is hosting at a camp in Rowsley on September 24 for youth living with the illness. He hopes the funds he raises will help those affected to buy equipment and help with other needs. Brandon lost his cousin Andrew to the disease in 2002. “Andrew was in a wheelchair from the age of 14 and while there are lots of different forms of the disease, Andrew had Duchenne muscular dystrophy, which moved very fast,” he said. Brandon said he has some reservations about shaving his locks but is looking forward to the change. Details: bit.ly/2flRLA1

“The idea of the traffic school has been in the pipeline for a long time, so it’s great that we can now take the necessary steps to making it happen,” Cr Ramsey said. “Not only will it be a place for fun and community events, it will teach kids vital road safety messaging from an early age, which they will take with them into adulthood.” The traffic school will also support schools with bike education and will promote and encourage active transport. The launch phase of the school will provide for 60 bikes for children learning to ride. Cr Ramsey said the plans were included in the council’s agreement of infrastructure to be included in the Atherstone development. The traffic education school is expected to be opened in 2019. It will be leased to a private operator and will be available for community events.

Ariela might find running and sports a challenge but she has a team of friends to help her. St George Preca Primary School teachers and students are running the Melbourne Marathon in support of their classmate. The school formed a running club earlier this year in preparation for the October 15 event to show support for nine-year-old Ariela who has mild hemiplegia cerebral palsy. This year’s marathon will be the biggest fundraiser for the Cerebral Palsy Education Centre – a charity that supports children up to 18 years of age who have the condition. Ariela attended the Cerebral Palsy Education Centre before she started at St George Preca and therapists visit her regularly to help her teachers. Teacher Davis Long said the school’s running club has bought in a personal trainer once a fortnight to prepare for the event. “We decided to do the Melbourne Marathon after an awareness day that we ran last year,” Mr Long said. “Having Ariela at our school makes it even more special because the kids are supporting one of their own schoolmates.” Mr Long said the team has raised $350 of its $500 goal. Ariela’s mum Melissa Riepsamen said she was proud that Ariela’s schoolmates were supporting her. “It’s fantastic that the kids are getting behind the cause,” Ms Riepsamen said. “Even though Ariela finds running and any sort of sport challenging, it never stops her.” Ms Riepsamen and Ariela’s two sisters and her best friend Naomi will all be walking the marathon by her side. By Laura Michell Melbourne’s outer suburban councils are warning that significant pockets of isolation and disadvantage are being created, with liveability falling behind the rest of the state. The Interface Councils group – comprising 10 municipalities that form a ring around metropolitan Melbourne, including Wyndham, Melton, Whittlesea and Hume – has released a liveability snapshot outlining service and infrastructure gaps that member councils are facing. The group says its residents are living with significantly fewer services and infrastructure than people in inner or middle Melbourne, and in some cases, even regional areas. The councils have criticised the state Labor and Liberal parties for failing to address the shortfalls. According to the report, which was launched last week, unemployment is higher in the outer suburbs, which are lacking in local job opportunities. It says interface residents face Melbourne’s longest commutes, with one in five residents travelling more than two hours a day for work. According to the report, psychological and mortgage stress are increasing in the outer suburbs. Interface Councils spokesman Peter Clarke said the snapshot revealed startling figures that should deeply concern the state government. “Gaps in infrastructure and services need

more than just sporadic funding support,” he said. “There have been two parliamentary inquiries and two Victorian Auditor General’s officer reports in the last nine years highlighting the problem and no party has developed and supported a comprehensive policy to address the infrastructure and service shortfall identified in the reports.”

‘‘

We’re calling for long-term funding commitments

’’

- Henry Barlow

Wyndham mayor Henry Barlow said the government needed to double the Growing Suburbs Fund – from $25 million a year to $50 million. He also called for the investment of $350 million to bridge gaps in health and human services in growth areas and $225 million a year to bring bus services up to an acceptable standard. “At the rate that Wyndham is growing, we’re going to need a new primary school every year and a new secondary school every three years,” he said. “It’s a similar story in other growth areas, so we’re also calling for long-term funding commitments in education, with land purchased and schools built before the backlog gets worse.”

Road Policing Enforcement Campaign Operation Scoreboard AFLGrand Final Holiday Weekend 2017 Operation Scoreboard (AFL Grand Final long weekend from Thursday 28th September to Sunday 31st September 2017) is identified as a period of potentially high risk to the Victorian community in terms of exposure to road trauma. Westgate Highway Patrol Acting Senior Sergeant Marty Wallace said the AFL Grand Final public holiday on Friday 29th September 2017 provides an opportunity for families to free themselves from their usual commitments and it is anticipated that large numbers of people will use Victorian roads, often driving long distances in unfamiliar driving conditions. The times of highest risk are when people are leaving for holiday destinations and returning home. Police will be targeting the main causes of fatalities and serious injuries in crashes which are: • Excessive speed • Driver distraction • Restraint non-compliance • Fatigue • Impaired driving (Alcohol and/or Drug) Motorists are requested to stay within the speed limit, don’t drink alcohol or take drugs and drive, leave your mobile phone out of reach, wear your seatbelt/child restraints and make sure you are well rested. Speed Cameras will be rostered in known high collision locations. Fatigue is one of the biggest killers on Victorian roads. Drivers are requested to plan their trip, be patient and ensure that you take at least a 15 minutes break at least every two hours and don’t drive if you are tired. Drivers planning to travel during this period can expect to see an increase in vehicles travelling on our major Freeways and Highways throughout the State. Road trauma isn’t just about the people who die – it’s about the enormous impact on the community, from the family members, to the emergency services workers who have to deal with these tragedies on a daily basis, to the police who have to deliver the devastating news to loved ones. All of the community has a responsibility and a role to play in reducing road trauma. Remember, travel safety so that you arrive at your destination safely and enjoy your Grand Final Holiday weekend. RoadSafe Westgate Community Road Safety

(Shawn Smits)

Outer suburbs need urgent fix

Council Chairman Mr Jim Giddings said it has been demonstrated time after time that speed is a contributing factor in most road crashes. Therefore stay within the speed limit and drive to suit the conditions you face. Speeding affects both the risk of a crash happening and the severity of injuries sustained when a crash does happen. Mr Giddings said the work of his group along with initiatives like the 2017 Operation Scoreboard Campaign for the AFL Grand Final Holiday long weekend would hopefully reduce the number of serious road crashes on our roads. He asked the community to report speeding drivers to Crime stoppers number 1800 333 000 Holiday driving has its challenges and drivers should drive in the hours they are normally awake, take regular breaks to reduce fatigue and allow extra space between vehicles. Drivers need to adapt to the conditions of the road, the onus is always on the driver to suit the conditions they are facing, and that includes the quality of the road. If you plan to have a drink then plan not to drive, taking a big risk like drink and driving is just not worth endangering your live or other road users. Before embarking on any driving trips drivers should check their tyres, windscreen washers, brakes and lights.

Grappling with fame Jake Navara has copped a broken arm, three concussions, two broken noses, torn ligaments and a dislocated elbow from wrestling – but he’s still pumped and ready to throw down for a wrestling showdown in coming weeks. The Melton personal trainer moonlights as a World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) wrestler and is vying for a championship title next month. Navara said his wrestling obsession started from a young age. “My love grew for the WWE style of wrestling when I was just eight years old,” he said. “I was immediately hooked on the theatrical characteristics and athleticism. “I said to myself, ‘That’s what I’m going to do one day!’”

He said he’s fulfilled that childhood dream over the past nine years touring Australia and America. “I have done most of the things on my list,” Navara said. “From holding championship gold to gaining respect and credibility from the Australian industry and from top WWE superstars I have idolised growing up.” If he wins the Showdown Wrestling, at the Melton Civic Centre on October 7, Navara will go head-to-head with Perth wrestler Aaron O’Malley for the New Horizons Pro-Wrestling Art of Fighting Championship belt. Shae-Lee Murphy is part of an elite women’s football squad headed for the US next month as she edges closer to her dream of being drafted to the AFLW. Murphy, 23, is among 30 players Australia-wide selected for an inaugural women’s Australian rules football tour of the US. Murphy grew up in Melton with her mum Kerri and brother Ryan before moving to Altona North at age eight. “I played for Altona as a junior in the boys’ team and I won the best and fairest; I was only 14,” she said. “Me, the footy club and my mum decided to make a team at Altona so I could keep playing there.” When she was 20, her world shattered when her mum suddenly died from a brain aneurysm. “My mum was a big driving factor in female sport in the western suburbs,” Murphy said. “I’ve been on a bit of a journey since that time, because she was a single parent and she was my best mate and a major support in my life, especially for my footy dream. “I was actually off football for a year injured at the same time that happened, so I was pretty much well down. “Over the past year and a half, I’ve got back into footy and I’m back into coaching and it’s all happening for me now. “I’m coaching at the Western Jets, I got selected to be at the Geelong Cats [VFLW squad] for the past 12 months and now I’m going on this trip. I’m on the up.” Murphy has set up a GoFundme page to raise the $6000 needed for her US tour. To donate, visit: gofundme.com/shaeleeswomens-afl-tour-in-usa?lang=en-AU

Melton businesses are being called on to enlist in a campaign to encourage residents to shop locally. Some businesses are already involved in the co-operative fuel discount program that rewards customers for using small businesses. Morgan’s IGA Supermarkets managing director Neal Morgan describes the program as being the independent, small business equivalent of those run by major chains. “But it’s better,” he said. The scheme seeks to beat chain stores at their own game by making the fuel discount cumulative, instead of a set amount per litre, and able to be redeemed after purchases at all fuel outlets. The discount accumulates with transactions at any participating local store. “We’re trying to get other retailers on board,” Mr Morgan said. “Any small business can get on board and add their own discount.” Morgan’s IGA supermarket and liquor and The Photo Place are local businesses currently involved in the scheme. The discount program is administered by EasyFuel, a family business that works to promote local businesses in regions across Australia. Esther Lauaki

MY PLACE Marriage celebrant Amber Kennedy is all about sharing the love. The Eynesbury resident spoke to Esther Lauaki about her community.

How long have you lived in the area? We have lived in the area for 11 years and moved to Eynesbury 18 months ago – we absolutely love it! Why did you decide to become a celebrant. After going to a few really bad weddings I thought to myself, these people deserve better! I could see how weddings could be beautiful with just a few changes from the celebrant. That’s when I decided I wanted to help people have their perfect day. The more weddings I did the more I realised that the best weddings are when people get married the way they want to. So apart from traditional ceremonies, in the past 10 years I have also been a part of many surprise, dress-up and location ceremonies. What are you passionate about? Marriage equality. I also think wedding ceremonies don’t have to be the boring bit before the fun starts. Let’s make the whole day awesome. You will be performing a same-sex commitment ceremony this week. Tell me about what that means to you. I look forward to the day that all consenting adults in Australia can choose to legally marry and commit for life. I believe it is not a religious debate – the church and state are separate and will remain so. It is not a debate about love –

as a marriage celebrant I do not legally marry people because they are ‘in love’ – there is no love test they need to pass. I believe every person deserves the same rights, so just as I was able to marry the person I wanted to commit to for life (happy 15th anniversary Damon xx) so should any other consenting adult. What other hats do you wear in the community? I volunteer at the Melton library co-ordinating the conversational English class. I believe strongly that the way to unite people from diverse backgrounds is through empathy. I am committed to be part of a city that gathers the good from everyone’s culture and builds a community that has the best from everyone. I am a also member of the council initiative, Venture Melton and co-ordinator of a local wedding network called www. gettingmarriedhere.com. Plus a school mum and frequent visitor to the local restaurants and shops – we have so many great ones! What would people be surprised to know about you? Not much, I am seriously an open book. My biggest secret is probably that on the rare Saturday that I don’t have a wedding you will struggle to get me out of my pjs. (Dennis Manktelow)

What is your connection to Melton? I live in Eynesbury and my children do kinder, school and sport locally.

What is the best thing about Eynesbury? It is a calming place to live and raise a family whilst still being close to the city and coast. My kids get outside a lot more since we moved here and my friends think I live in the bush.

Built and fitted-out with low-maintenance living at its core, this great unit in Melton West is close to the local early learning centre and within walking distance of parkland, shopping and public transport. All main living areas, as well as the bathroom and laundry, are tiled in the same cream tile, making clean-up easy. The kitchen is simple and stylish and has stainless-steel appliances. It overlooks a good-sized living room with a split-system and sliding door access to the low-maintenance outdoor spaces, landscaped with crushed rock and drought-tolerant shrubbery. All three bedrooms are carpeted in a charcoal grey pile, have built-in robes and receive good light. The main bedroom has a walk-in robe plus an en suite. A remote-controlled single garage completes this tidy and great value property.

Perch on a dining chair at this place, look down the 18th fairway and see Eynesbury Homestead and grey box forest beyond – this fine house is in a brilliant cul-de-sac spot. At 40 squares, the impressive residence turns on the features. Four big bedrooms include the main with french doors to back gardens; it also has a chic royal blue island wall concealing the wardrobe and an en suite with designer tiling, huge walk-in shower and tub. There’s also a study. A grey-carpeted lounge room has royal blue wall paint creating an intimate feel, while the very big living hub shows off those designer floor tiles. The kitchen has a butler’s pantry and multiple Bosch appliances. Two appealing alfresco areas and pretty landscaping play their role on the block of about 800 square metres.

KURUNJANG 33 Archer Drive, 3337 Professionals Ryder: 9743 6400

Price: $599,000 – $630,000

Opposite a large park with footy ground, barbecue area and play equipment, this is a place for space-loving families – there are four living areas in all, each decorated individually. First up, along the entry hall with floating floorboards, is a grey-carpeted open lounge room with an angled ceiling rising to about four metres. It has the timber blinds that, along with mid-grey textured roller blinds, dress most windows. Then, farther along, is an open playroom, with dark floor planks and forest-green highlight wall. The floating floorboards

continue into the expansive hub, which has double doors to a carpeted theatre room. A two-way gas log fire warms this room and the hub. The kitchen, with dark-chocolate cabinetry, has loads of Caesarstone benches (one able to seat six for brekkie), a walk-in pantry, burnt-orange glass splashback, a dishwasher and Blanco 900mm underbench oven and gas cooktop. The big laundry, along the entry hall, has a french-door closet and charcoal cabinetry, as well as access to the remote-controlled double garage.

Also along the entry hall is a carpeted open study with burnt-orange highlight wall, plus a powder room, the main bedroom and the first minor bedroom. The extra-big main bedroom, through double doors, has a retreat space, twin walk-in fitted wardrobes and an open en suite with dual square basins atop a charcoal floating vanity, a double shower and a glazed door to the alfresco area. Terracotta-toned tiles line the floor, as they do in all wet areas. The two other fitted bedrooms are along a carpeted hallway from the hub, as is the

main bathroom decked out in charcoal and white. Ducted heating, split-system and multiple ceiling fans add seasonal comfort. Accessible from entry hall and hub, an integrated alfresco area has a wooden seat perched beside a pond rimmed with decorative grasses, while yukkas screen the fence. The compact backyard has a garden shed and water tank and awaits landscaping. Side gates open to a spot to park boat or trailer. Carole Levy 13 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ SEPTEMBER 26, 2017

SPORT Jet’s Barry Round medallist in rare company Stefan Radovanovic has defied the odds by winning the 2017 Barry Round Medal for the Western Jets’ best-and-fairest. Such a scenario would have been unthinkable for Radovanovic when he entered the TAC Cup season as a bottom-age player with a troubling recent injury history. But he made his own luck through sheer persistence and hard work, taking out the top honour with 204 votes, seven clear of Lachlan Fogarty (197) and co-captain Nick Stuhldreier (180) came in third. Jets coach Torin Baker said the win was an exciting one for the player. “It’s rare that you see a bottom-ager win a TAC Cup club best-and-fairest,” Baker said. “I think it’s only happened a couple of times at the Western Jets, so he’s in rare company.” Radovanovic was on a modified training

program leading up to the season. Despite a limited pre-season, the 17-year-old managed to play 13 of the Jets’ 18 games with confidence, improving with every outing. “He’s had a couple of years where he’d had not a lot of continuity with his football,” Baker said. “One of the things with Stef that a lot of people don’t see – he’s had to be really diligent with his rehab and the amount of stretching that needs to be done to make sure that injuries don’t come back at him. “From the moment he resumed playing footy this season, he hasn’t really missed a beat. “He just got better and better through the middle part of the season.” Radovanovic started the season as rebounding defender, but has evolved into one of the Western Jets’ best utilities.

The Keilor product impressed with his ability to play on talls and smalls in the defensive 50 and was damaging with his defensive exits. “He’s around the 190-centimetre mark, but his ability to play on a variety of players makes him very valuable,” Baker said. “He played on players that were almost 200 centimetres and then he’d play on players who were 175 centimetres. “You look at a Ben Stratton at Hawthorn, who plays on talls and smalls – he’s in that sort of mould.” As the season wore on, Radovanovic moved into the midfield. His run, carry and tenacity were a feature, complemented by his tidy ball use. “He’s got great run and carry and that comes through his speed,” Baker said.

Devils take the flag By Tara Murray It was double the celebrations for Darley on Saturday, with its reserves joining the senior side as Ballarat Football League premiers. Both sides had the same task on grand final day – to beat arch rivals Bacchus Marsh to seal premiership glory. While the seniors were in front all day, the reserves had to come from behind to get the win. The Devils kicked five last quarter goals to seal the 8.13 (61)-7.5 (47) win. Cobras playing coach Travis Minns said the win was special for everyone at the club. It’s the club’s first reserves premiership since 1989. “It feels as good as anything I’ve felt in my life,’ he said. “Just the way the guys went about it. It means so much to so many people at our footy club who are the heart and soul of the club. “To see the smile on their faces and see how happy they are. “In 10 years time we get to come back and celebrate the one day where we were kings, it just means so much to everyone.” The Devils had to do it the hard way having trailed all day. The Cobras made the most of kicking with a distinct breeze in the first quarter, leading by four goals at quarter-time. That margin was down to six points at half-time, but could have been closer if the Devils kicked straight. The Cobras extended that back to 12 points at three-quarter time, with the Devils kicking with the wind in the final quarter. Despite being outscored in that third quarter, Minns said the signs were there that things were turning in their favour. “I think we played the conditions a lot better in the third quarter than we did in the first half,” he said. “I thought we came out all guns blazing and our tackling pressure was up, but there was a couple of little things [we weren’t doing right]. “We played into their hands. In the third quarter when we slowed it up and absorbed the pressure we found some uncontested marks and opened it up.” Minns knew at this point his side was in a good position to really take it to the Cobras in the last quarter. “We’ve come from behind in our last three finals,” he said. Dane Grenfell kicked three goals for the Devils, all which game in the final quarter. Aaron Speak chipped in with two goals. Brad Inglis was awarded the best on ground medal. For more pictures of the game, go to www. starweekly.com.au

“He’s really hard to tackle – he’s just a strong body and a neat kick. “He’s got some really good offensive elements.” With another year of under-18 football to come, Radovanovic will undoubtedly be closely monitored by the AFL scouts. He will get one more chance to impress the recruiters this season when he takes to the field on Friday in the under-17 future stars game at Simonds Stadium. Radovanovic will take on the nation’s best under-17 boys along with promising Jets teammates Buku Khamis and Zak Butters. Jets top-ager Lachlan Fogarty will play in the under-18 all-star game at the MCG on grand final day.

Twice as nice for Delahey’s second cup

Devil of a day for a flag By Tara Murray The Darley Football Club is the toast of the Ballarat Football League after winning its second premiership in three years. With everything on the line, including local pride against their closest rival Bacchus Marsh, the Devils delivered a grand final day to remember. As in the previous three clashes between the two sides, there was no close result, the Devils making it a hat-trick with a dominant display. Despite the Cobras throwing everything at them in the third quarter, the Devils won 14.13 (97)-6.11 (47). Devils coach Heath Scotland said there was many emotions after sealing victory. “Relief is one of them,” he said. “And pure elation. I look around here, all the supporters, the members and everybody who had given something this year, worked so hard to get into this position – it is such a rewarding feeling.” It was the Devils’ day even before the opening bounce of the senior grand final, with their reserves having already defeated the Cobras in the earlier grand final. Once the senior grand final got under way, the Devils set about making it two for the day. Scotland said they tried to forge the same sort of momentum that had generated a big semi-final win over Bacchus Marsh. “Football can change day-to-day,” he said. “I knew if we pressured them well and we played good football, I knew we were capable of doing that again. “Our best is this, our worst can be vulnerable. For me, it was about getting back to the process, understanding how we got that result – we needed to implement that again.” In less than ideal conditions, with a tricky wind favouring one end, the Devils started where they left off in the semi-final. Kicking against the wind, they led by 14 points at quarter-time after kicking the only two goals of the opening quarter. It wasn’t until the dying minutes of the first half that the Cobras kicked their first major to reduce the margin to 22 points. Scotland said the Devils prided themselves 38 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ SEPTEMBER 26, 2017

on a defence. “Our game is built off our defence,” he said. “They’ve got some quality players and obviously missing Jarrah Maksymow ,who kicked 52 goals for the year, is a big loss [for them]. “We set our backs a task to defend their dangerous players, and to be honest I thought our backs were best on ground. “Kyle Docherty was phenomenal, Shane Page was amazing off the wing and coming back, and Jackson Carrick stood tall. “Tom Evans, Jacob Zeestraten and Darren Leonard [also stood out].” The Cobras threw everything at the Devils in the third quarter but couldn’t convert. The defining moment came when the Cobras were left a man down after Dean Heta was sent from the field after receiving a yellow card. As well as leaving the Cobras short, it meant

the Devils had one less dangerous player to shut down. Scotland said Heta was a player they had really focused on. The Devils then piled on the goals, kicking the last four of the quarter to lead by 49 points at the last change. The sting went out of the game in the last quarter and the Devils extended their lead by a solitary point. Scotland said the win was the result of a really strong four-quarter performance. Luke Delahey was awarded the Ray Edwards Memorial Plate for best-on-ground, while Scotland was awarded the Victorian Country Football League Medal. The premiership is the Devils’ second in the BFL after breaking through for victory in 2015. Scotland said that while this year’s group had done a lot of work, the platform for success had been built in the past couple of years. “I knew if we could pick up a couple of quality players and implement a game style which I knew would be successful, I knew it was a good position to take,” Scotland said. “Although there was a lot of work done by a lot of people [this year], and I’m proud of the work I’ve done myself, the foundations were set before I got here.” Scotland, who announced after the game he would be hanging up the boots, was one of those handy inclusions and was one of the Devils’ best throughout the finals series. He said it was about getting the right people with the right personalities to complement the group already in place. “We knew Steve Kennedy was leaving, Anthony Chiu was leaving and so was Ryan Closter … I was thinking, I’m going to lose half my club here,” he said. “We recruited and got some good players, but we wanted to make sure we recruited some local players like Nicholas Thacker, Kyle Doyle and Brad Inglis. “They’re local people, which is what we’ve been building around – and then adding some class players.” More pictures of the game and celebrations are at www.starweekly.com.au/sports

The first time was sweet, but the second time is even sweeter for Darley’s Luke Delahey. Part of the Devils 2015 premiership, Delahey played a key role in making sure the Devils added the 2017 premiership to the cabinet. Playing in defence and providing plenty of run and carry through the middle of the ground, Delahey was awarded the Ray Edwards Memorial Plate by the umpires as the best player on the ground. He was well supported by the rest of the backline, which coach Heath Scotland credited as the key reason for the win. Scotland was awarded the other best on ground medal. Delahey said the feeling of winning a premiership was as amazing as 2015, but at the same time it felt different. “It’s unbelievable, it brings back memories of 2015,” he said. “Back in 2015, it was a bit more of a relief, to be honest. “I’d never played in finals as a junior, so to get into the grand final and the last week of September was special. “This is even better, coming against Bacchus Marsh as most of my mates play there.” The Geelong VFL development player said he had taken confidence out of the side’s semi-final win against the Cobras, when they destroyed the Cobras with their intensity. “We knew we could match it if we bring the heat and give our defenders time to set up,” he said. “At half-time [in the grand final] I still had full confidence in the boys, we just had to absorb the heat as they threw everything at us. “I still can’t believe it.” It caps off a good final series for Delahey, who was the Cobras best in their first final, the elimination final against North Ballarat City. Delahey said the memorial plate for being best on ground was something he was likely to reflect on more once he finishes playing football. He was full of praise for their coach, Scotland, who is in his first year at the club. “The professionalism he brings to the club is first class and it reflects in both grades as you’ve seen today.” Tara Murray

Bacchus Marsh falls short against arch rival

Logan Blundell out runs Darley’s Shane Page. (Shawn Smits)

Bacchus Marsh, unable to repeat the heroics of last season, fell short in the Ballarat Football League grand final. Looking for a second straight premiership, the Cobras were clearly outplayed by arch rival Darley, going down 14.13 (97)-6.11 (47). Cobras coach Travis Hodgson said it was a case of being beaten by the better team on the day. “Credit to Darley,” he said. “Over the course of the day, they were the better side and the scoreboard reflects that.” Hodgson said the Darley defence had stood up at the right time of year. “We kicked three goals against them at Darley Park two weeks ago and today we’ve got six,” he said. “Nine goals in two games doesn’t cut it.” The Cobras kicked one goal in the first half of the grand final – in the dying minutes of the second quarter. Despite that, they were

just 22 points down as both sides struggled in extremely windy conditions. The Cobras threw everything at the Devils in the third quarter, but weren’t able to convert on the scoreboard. When Dean Heta was sent from the field after getting a yellow card for going on with a scuffle with Abraham Kur, the Cobras’ task was made a lot harder. Hodgson said they were left to rue that period of time. “I thought we threw everything we had at them in the third quarter,” he said. “I’m proud of our efforts there and I think we created a lot of opportunities. We didn’t take them and, obviously, being a man down when Dean got sent off it didn’t help our cause.” The Cobras lost the fourth quarter by a single point, but that effort was too little too late. The Cobras had only single goal kickers, with no forward able to exert influence.

Grand end to Darley days By Tara Murray Heath Scotland has done a lot in his football career, but Saturday’s Ballarat Football League premiership with Darley is right up there. After 268 AFL games with Collingwood and Carlton, Scotland spent a couple of seasons playing with Doncaster in the Eastern Football League. Late last year he decided to make the move back to his home club, taking over the coaching reigns for Jarrod Edwards. Scotland said there was something special about Darley. “Everyone speaks about their clubs, and the one thing I’ve found in my experience that Darley is a unique club with just general care for everybody. “I’ve stayed close with a lot of people through my whole AFL career and they’ve always had time for me. So coming back I was really keen to reward them with success. “Although there was a lot of work done by a lot of people [this year] and I’m proud of the work I’ve done myself, the foundations were set before I got here.” Scotland, who had never played in a premiership at the Devils, led his side into the grand final against arch rival Bacchus Marsh. The Devils dominated all day to win 14.13 (97)-6.11 (47). For Scotland it’s a moment he will saviour. “To be honest, probably one of the best feelings I’ve had in football … the club which I started my footy at and to come back and get them two flags against their rival. “The respect I’ve got for this club and the people that have helped build it is huge, for me that’s what it is. “I was more nervous than any other game I’ve played, because I know how much it meant not only to the players, but to everyone at the football cub.” Scotland kicked two goals, including a beauty from the boundary late in the last quarter. Despite having the win all but sealed up at three quarter-time, Scotland didn’t allow himself to enjoy the win until the siren went. “I was still intense and yelling,” he said. “I just couldn’t shut down until the final siren. We were up by 40-50 points and I kept thinking they would kick five to 10 goals in five minutes, it’s just the way I am. The moment the siren went I could take stock.” Post game, Scotland said he was hanging up his boots. He finished his playing career with not only a premiership but also the AFL Victoria Country Football League medal as one of the best players in the grand final. Scotland, who was named BFL coach of the year, was also named in the BFL team of the year and finished top-10 in the league’s best and fairest. “I won’t be playing footy next year, so it’s a nice way to go out. I’ll focus on the coaching box.”

Jackson Bolton, Matt Denham and Logan Blundell were name the Cobras’ best. Despite the obvious disappointment, Hodgson said backing up and making a second straight grand final reflected where the club was at. “It takes a fairly strong effort to get back here again,” he said. “A lot of sides, like the Bulldogs, for example, have hand-overs and don’t back it up. The effort was there, but we came up short in a few areas.” The Cobras had a tough day all round, with their reserves also suffering grand final heartache at the hands of the Devils. After leading well into the fourth quarter, the Cobras were over-run to lose 8.13 (61)-7.5 (47). “It sets strong foundations and a solid platform to launch 2018,” Hodgson said of the Cobras’ overall season. Tara Murray

Henderson Medal count a close call Bacchus Marsh’s Scott Sherlock and Darley’s Brian Graham were pipped at the post for the Ballarat Football Netball League’s highest honour. The two finished equal runners-up in the Henderson Medal, three votes behind Redan’s Nathan Horbury. Horbury started the season slow, before coming home strongly and hit the front in round 16. He polled three votes in the final round against Bacchus Marsh to seal the win. Graham and his playing coach Heath Scotland led the count early, with Scotland polling 12 votes in the first six rounds. Graham was in front after round nine with 15 votes and second on that number of votes after 12 rounds. He missed three games in the back half of the season, playing with Essendon’s VFL side, which hurt his chances. Sherlock hit the front for the first time in round 12 and became the outright leader in round 14 when he polled three votes. A hamstring injury the following week ended his home-and-away season, but he remained in front until the final votes of the night. Sherlock was one of four Cobras’ players named in the team of the year. Trent Angwin, Jackson Bolton and Dean Heta were also named in the team. The Devils had equal most players named in the team of the year with five, including Graham, Kyle Docherty, Chris Graham, Scotland and Shane Page. Scotland was coach of the year, while Page, who was named on the bench, was named captain of team of the year. Melton’s Braeden Kight and Melton South’s Mark Lynch were also named in the team of the year. In other awards, Bacchus Marsh’s Leo Nunn was one of four winners of the club 18 division best and fairest award. Melton South co-coach Brendan Fevola won the Tony Lockett goal kicking award for the senior competition and the goal of the year, but failed to poll a vote in the Henderson Medal count. Panthers’ Johnanne Hunt won the under-19 netball best and fairest award. In other awards, Sunbury Lions Ashleigh Hardy and Redan’s Ruby Parry shared the Sally McLean Trophy for the A-grade netball best and fairest. Overall Sunbury Lions won the club of year, which was based on points allocated for wins in both netball and football.
