Dingo pups cuddle call Fancy a cuddle with the newest and cutest additions to the Dingo Discovery Research Centre in Toolern Vale? Members of the public have a rare chance to get up close to the six-week-old pups and tour their Dingo Den on weekends until the end of this month. Dingo Discovery Centre owner Lynn Watson said that with dingoes under threat from crossbreeding, the new purebred pups would help bolster numbers around the globe. “All these little dingoes are the drivers for our engine to keep the bloodline going,” she said. People can meet both baby and adult dingoes, and learn about why the breed is so important, when they visit, she said. “The 18 puppies are certainly a handful – they’re very, very cheeky, intelligent and absolutely love to play,” she said. The puppies will be at the centre for the next few months until they are old enough to leave mum and dad and be relocated to other wildlife parks in Australia and around the world. Council switch on Australia Day By Esther Lauaki Melton council’s Australia Day celebrations will continue at The Willows Historical Park in Melton next year, despite a decision by councillors earlier this year to move the event to another part of the municipality. In March, councillors voted for the 2018 Australia Day festivities to be held at Morton Homestead in Taylors Hill. Mayor Sophie Ramsey successfully challenged the venue change at last week’s meeting following a report by council officers

on whether the Taylors Hill community centre, across the road from the Homestead, would have sufficient space. “I have grave concerns about parking for those with disabilities and the elderly at Taylors Hill,” Cr Ramsey said. “At The Willows … there isn’t a major road that guests need to cross at any point during the celebrations. “In the eastern corridor, where Morton Homestead is situated, it’s quite a distance from the community centre and I don’t think it’s appropriate. Melton South Primary School pupils have celebrated 100 days of learning. Grade 1 pupils and their teachers last week celebrated the milestone of a century of days since their first day of school. Teacher Amanda Larizza said the children had been learning about the value of the number 100 as part of their curriculum.

The state government has called for VicRoads to fast-track works on Bacchus Marsh Road following the 10th fatality on the road in the past five years. The 47 kilometre stretch of road from Corio to the outskirts of Bacchus Marsh was last year listed by the Victorian government as one of the state’s 20 most dangerous roads. On July 19, a driver died after her car allegedly crossed double lines and clipped a truck near Lara. This latest fatality prompted Roads Minister Luke Donnellan’s request to start the $45 million planned safety works on Bacchus Marsh Road as soon as possible. “Nothing is more important than keeping people safe on our roads and my heart goes out to those involved in the collision on Geelong-Bacchus Marsh Road,” Mr Donnellan said. “I have asked VicRoads to find ways to fast-track planned safety improvements to Geelong-Bacchus Marsh Road. “All the work that can be brought forward, will be.” Upgrades to the notorious stretch include wire rope barriers, rumble strips, new overtaking lanes, wider centre-lines, installing new roundabouts and resurfacing the road between Little River-Ripley Road and Ballan Road. A temporary 80km/h speed limit will be introduced in coming weeks, and new rumble strips are expected to be installed in the next fortnight, Mr Donnellan said.

Wyndham Crime Investigation Unit detectives arrested four teenage boys following an aggravated burglary in Melton West on July 22. Police believe the group broke into a house on Bulmans Road just after midnight, stole car keys and left in the residents’ 2014 VF Holden Commodore. No one at the property was injured. The car was tracked to Bangalay Drive, Brookfield. Two 17-year-old boys and two 14-year-old boys were arrested and interviewed by police.

High tea budget lowered to $10k Melton council has agreed to lower the budget for any future International Women’s Day events but still refused to cap how much they could spend on a guest speaker. The council stirred controversy earlier this year when it splashed out nearly $17,000 of ratepayers money – which had not been budgeted for – on the extravagant invitation-only high tea, prompting questions about transparency. The cost of the tea only came to public

attention at the March meeting – a few days before the event – when Watts ward councillor Lara Carli questioned the mayor and officers about the event’s purpose, price and guest list. The council decided in April to restrict the budget for future high-tea events to $10,000. However, Cr Carli raised concerns at last Monday’s council meeting that there had been no explicit restriction placed on the amount that could be spent on a guest speaker. “The decision was to allocate $10,000 with an additional allocation for a guest speaker,” she said. “Myself and a few of my fellow councillors

Police cast wide net Police will be out in numbers on some of Melton’s highest risk rural roads as the highway patrol bolsters efforts to target speeding drivers and lower the road toll. As part of the TAC-funded Operation Cast, police will target Hopkins Road in Truganina, Melton Highway in Plumpton, Diggers Rest-Coimadai Road in Toolern Vale, Gisborne-Melton Road in Toolern Vale and Vineyard Road in Diggers Rest. Sergeant Chris Stuhldreier said these were the top-five areas for road trauma in the Melton service area. He said police would focus on speed, distraction and impaired driving at different times and days to provide an “unpredictable response”. Sergeant Stuhldreier said rural roads continued to be overrepresented in crash statistics, especially in Melton. “People tend to get easily distracted on

voted against it because there wasn’t a cap and we didn’t feel that it was the right thing for this council to do. “We could have a guest speaker that could cost $25,000 or $30,000 or even $40,000 – who knows? At the moment it’s open, which doesn’t sit comfortably with me.

“I would like to hear from our audit committee to see if it’s council’s best practice to make decisions and leave it open like that.” Cr Carli’s motion to refer the matter to the audit committee – of which she is a member – was rejected by the council. Cr Ramsey said she was surprised that the high tea was still “a bone of contention”. “Yes, 107 wonderful women and 29 students were brought to a high tea,” she said. “I’m sick and tired of councillors wanting a scapegoat … so they’ll use the high tea. The high tea was a great initiative; it worked well.”

Arresting development By Goya Dmytryshchak An all-female police crew staffed the north-west on Thursday to celebrate 100 years of women in policing. More than 30 women were rostered on in police divisions 2 and 3, which cover Maribyrnong, Hobsons Bay, Brimbank, Melton and Wyndham. Friday marked 100 years since Madge Connor and Elizabeth Beers became the first female “agents” with Victoria Police, although they had no arrest power and were paid half as much as men. It would be another seven years before four

women were sworn in with equal pay and 30 years before they got a uniform. In 1951, Grace Brebner became Australia’s first female detective and in 1960 women took the first three places – dux, second and third – among graduate recruits. Hobsons Bay Inspector Michelle Young, who was sworn in 32 years ago, was one of four women at her first police station. One had to resign from operational duties when she got married – a practice only abolished in 1972. “The glass ceilings that were very present in the past, and certainly in my early years, have shattered,” Inspector Young said.

Melton trains will run more frequently to and from the city, with an extra 18 services on the Ballarat line being added this month. V/Line timetables will include the new weekend and weekday train services from August 23. Western Victoria MP Jaala Pulford said five extra services on Saturdays and four on Sundays would cut waiting times for trains from 90 to 60 minutes. For people visiting Melbourne and attending mid-week events, the late-night service on Fridays departing Southern Cross Station at 11.55pm for Ballarat, which stops at Melton, will be extended to run each week night. Ms Pulford said one weekday off-peak service would be added in the evening from Southern Cross to Ballarat, departing at 9.17pm and stopping at Melton. “We’re giving people in the west more options in how they get home on a weeknight or the weekend,” she said. Ms Pulford said the government had invested in 39 new VLocity carriages on top of the existing order of 48 to add capacity. Melton passengers will also benefit from the Regional Rail Revival of the Victorian and federal governments, with $518 million to be spent on the duplication of the Ballarat line from Deer Park West to Melton, allowing for more services and future electrification. Turban hearing a test case Sagardeep is a father fighting for his son. The Sikh man is battling a Christian school that he claims refused to enrol his five-year-old boy if he wore the child’s version of a turban, called a patka, or grew his hair long. The school, Melton Christian College, insisted it had the right to set the uniform its students wear. The arbitrator of the case will be the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal, but it will be closely watched as a test case by the Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission. Sagardeep Singh Arora said the school was breaching the Equal Opportunity Act and is discriminating against his son, by not allowing him to wear the patka – an essential part of his religious practice. He wants his son, Sidhak, to attend the Christian school because of its good reputation. “The police and the army allow Sikhs to wear the turban … why not in the classroom?” Mr Arora said. “If you’re enrolling a student from a different community, you should allow them to practise their religious beliefs … they should not be forced to abandon their faith.” But the school’s principal David Gleeson told the tribunal he was proud of the “neutrality” of the uniform. “He’s identifying himself as something other than the identity of the college and that creates a difference, that takes away the level playing field for himself and other students in the school,” Mr Gleeson said. “Some of them are African and some of them

are Indian and some of them are white Aussies … as a school we tend to be oblivious to that and I think that is a strength … that comes from … [the] neutrality of the uniform.” The school argued that an exemption in the Equal Opportunity Act, Section 42, allows schools to set and enforce “reasonable” standards of dress for students.

The matter has been viewed by the Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission as a test case for Section 42. The school has also relied on another exemption, that allows a school that is “wholly or mainly for students of a particular sex, race [or] religious belief” to turn away students of a different group. Lawyer for the commission, Elizabeth Bennett, told the tribunal this exemption was designed to be inclusive, not exclusive. Ms Bennett said the school was in effect saying that “we’re happy to have Sikhs who don’t make any trouble, who don’t manifest their religion in any way that makes me feel uncomfortable”. Sidhak currently attends a state school, where he is allowed to wear the turban. The hearing continues. – The Age

MY PLACE Grant Hamilton looks back at 55 years in Australian defence and says that he wouldn’t have changed a day of his service. The newly retired Brookfield resident spoke with Esther Lauaki. What’s your connection with Melton? I’ve lived in Brookfield for the past 15 years.

I served 22 years in the air force, senior clerk supply, and then I left the air force and went into the public service and [had] more than 32 years on the clerical side of things. When I first joined the public service, I was a communication analyst with Defence Signals Directorate. I then moved to the area that looked after acquiring new equipment for the air force. I ran that program for about 14 years. I eventually moved into foreign military sales in policy and procedures until I retired. You have been a retired man since July 13. How does it feel? More than anything, I’d love to be back in the office, but I have been doing other things like aerobics on Mondays and tenpin bowling league on Tuesday and house renovations and I’m an “18 degrees golfer” – if it’s below 18 degrees, I won’t play.

Mr Hamilton received a letter of thanks and acknowledgment of 54 years and 334 days of service from Australian acting secretary of defence Brendan Sargeant who said that length of service was “a feat that a very rare few ever achieve”.

SPORT Scoring rampage a strong sign for Caroline Springs The Caroline Springs senior women’s hockey side has continued its winning ways in the club’s inaugural season by making short work of Old Xaverians in the pennant F division on Saturday. The battle between top and bottom sides was a one-sided affair, with the Springers running rings around the home team. While the 11-0 result showed the gulf between the two sides, it could have been far bigger if not for some poor short corner conversions from the ladder leaders. Still, Caroline Springs coach Ron Shadbolt was pleased with what he saw from his players. “The girls played in a rather clinical manner,” he said. “Ball movement and passing around was pretty good, our structures held even though we moved our players around a fair bit – they

all know their positions and their roles in the side and they stuck to that.” Shadbolt went into the match without a goalkeeper and no bench, with Kathy Jungfer playing as a kicking back and the Springers rotating through defence whenever players needed a rest. The Springers looked on from the start, moving the ball with ease through the centre of the ground and looking particularly dangerous down the right side. Goals flowed steadily, but it was the lead-up play from midfielder Aimee Jungfer that stood out, with the 14-year-old running rings around the Old Xaverians players to set up multiple goals. “For a young player who is learning the ropes and learning new positions, she was outstanding,” Shadbolt said. “She’s got some smarts and good hockey knowledge … today

she was laying the ball off to the correct positions, which helped set us up.” Lucy Steele was the star up forward with

a hat-trick of goals, while Brittany Webster scored twice and six other players hit the scoreboard in the rout. With just four rounds to play before finals, Caroline Springs is eight points clear on top of the ladder with an unbeaten record. But Shadbolt believes there will have to be plenty of improvement if his side is to taste premiership success in its first season. “We still need a fair bit of work on our penalty corner conversion,” he said. “We’re converting at 15 per cent and we want to get that up to 25 per cent if we can. We need to be more organised with transitioning the ball out of defence, which we were a bit sloppy in today – that will need to improve against the higher teams. “Our long-term goal is to get into a high-quality league next year and we’re on the right path for that.”

Solid defence a winner By Ewen McRae A stingy defence from Darley helped it to an important win over East Point on Saturday, as the fight for Ballarat Football League finals places heats up. Darley was able to keep the visiting East Point goalless through the first half to set up a match-winning lead and in difficult windy conditions it took a 10.18 (78)-5.11 (41) win. It stays third on the ladder, just a game behind Lake Wendouree and percentage ahead of Redan. Devils coach Heath Scotland said it was an important win after some indifferent form of late. “I was rapt with how our boys played,” Scotland said. “A few weeks back we had had a poor month, we regrouped at our last bye and have now had two good performances which is great.

“We’ve had to change the side around again, we had six of our starting 18 out in this one and the guys adapted … the guys coming in did their job so we weren’t rattled by an unsettled line-up.” Despite Darley kicking against the wind in the opening term, it dominated possession to set up the win. Not only did it keep East Point to just four behinds, but 2.8 for the Devils was important as they turned to kick with the wind in the second term. They rammed home their advantage in the lead up to half-time, kicking 3.5 to 0.3 on their way to a six-goal lead at the long break. East Point finally found the goals in the third quarter, but it was too little too late. Darley again stayed tight defensively in the final term, letting just one goal through. “Our work rate and effort was up, and while they [East Point] did have some opportunities our backs were solid all day,” Scotland said.

“To keep a team that was sitting sixth goalless in the first half was important … we knew we had a good game against them last time and they came out with a bit more vigour this time around, but I think we handled that really well.” Harley Inglis kicked three goals for the Devils to be the best forward, while Luke Delahey was strong through the middle of the ground. Darley will welcome back up to five players for this week’s clash with ladder leaders Bacchus Marsh, a good problem to have for Scotland. “We’ve got some selection dilemmas with players coming back after a good win, but that’s good for us,” he said. “I feel like we’re well placed this week, we accounted for Bacchus Marsh in round one, our form has picked up after a flat spot so we feel confident going into this week. “We’ve got our group back and looking forward to a good contest against what the competition says is the benchmark team.”

Bacchus Marsh’s netballers kept their chances of a finals berth alive at the weekend, grabbing a strong win over Melton South in the Ballarat Football Netball League A grade. Fifth-placed Bacchus Marsh needed to win to have any chance of finals, and it came from behind in a stunning last quarter to take the points, 35-26. Home team Melton South led for most of the day, winning a three-goal advantage at quarter-time, holding it at half-time, before fading in the third and slowing to a near-stop in the deciding term as it scored just one goal. With scores tied at three-quarter time, the Bacchus Marsh Cobras had complete control of the final quarter as they stormed home to the win. The Cobras’ Fiona Bayly had a good day with 23 goals, while Emily Bettio played an important role in the middle of the court. In other round-14 matches, Melton continued to search for its first win of the season as it fell to a 19-goal loss to Lake Wendouree. The Lakers never looked like losing the home contest, keeping Melton to just three goals in the first quarter as they built a steady lead. They would extend their lead at every change in the 41-22 win, despite some good shooting from Ebony Carter (15 goals), who was a strong focal point for the visitors. Darley was no match for East Point in its match at Darley Park and, despite a strong last quarter, went down 51-22. East Point, placed third on the ladder, led by five points at quarter-time before a 14-2 second quarter broke the game open and it continued to stretch its lead at every opportunity. Darley’s best patches of play came in the final quarter as it went goal for goal with the visitors to draw the quarter nine-all. Three clubs make GDCA switch Three new clubs have joined the Gisborne District Cricket Association ranks, following a vote by the existing GDCA clubs at last week’s annual meeting. Eynesbury, Trentham and Melton Centrals will all field sides in the GDCA this summer, as the association moves to 10-team grades for the 2017-18 season. GDCA president Rob McIntyre said it was a simple choice for the current clubs. “There was good support from all the existing clubs, so all three [new clubs] were voted into the competition,” he said. “With the move to 10-team grades, these sides will give that extra layer of competition across the grades and make the association stronger.” While the grades each club will fit into will be determined at another meeting in the coming weeks, it is expected Eynesbury will field its first XI in B grade and Trentham will play in C grade. Melton Centrals will field two of their lower XIs in the association, with their top sides remaining in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association. The addition of the extra clubs means a re-jigged GDCA competition structure allowing for more two-day cricket, which McIntyre said would help everyone in the long run. “A club like Eynesbury, which will have four sides coming in and coming off a premiership, should be competitive in B grade,” McIntyre said. “We mightn’t see a lift in the standard in the first couple of years, but having more two-day cricket will hopefully allow more juniors and younger players a better opportunity to make

a contribution in their matches. I also think having more two-day cricket will attract better players to the competition.” The move to 10-team grades means Rupertswood will avoid relegation from McIntyre Cup, while Lancefield will be promoted from B grade. Last year’s B-grade runner up, Wallan, has been offered the final spot in the McIntyre Cup, with the association waiting to hear if the offer will be accepted. Sunbury United will fill the vacancy if Wallan declines. “Wallan are having a meeting this week to decide if they’ll take that spot,” McIntyre said. “They’re just not sure yet if they have the personnel to come up and be sustainable. “If Wallan don’t want to come up, and there’s no pressure on them to do that, then we’ll invite Sunbury United – and they’re quite keen if the opportunity presents itself.” In addition to the new clubs and grade changes, the GDCA has endorsed the introduction of a send-off rule, which was recently added to the Laws of Cricket for local competitions. “We’ve supported that change to give umpires some more power against bad behavior,” McIntyre said. “And we’ll bring our one-day rules in line with other competitions with regards to fielding restrictions and the like, but aside from those two rules it’s business as usual this season.”
