Dyeing to try henna
(Shawn Smits)
Waves of people can expect to have a “hands on” experience of Indian culture at the next henna workshop in Melton. The popular workshop, at Darlingsford Barn this Friday (July 28), will teach the history, cultural background, design and application of the artform. Henna artist Supreet kaur Tuteja has lived in Melton for 20 years and leads workshops around the state in henna as well as rangoli – an art form using coloured powders to create patterns. She said she relished the opportunity to share her culture. “It’s very important because Australia is such a multicultural community,” Ms Tuteja said. The nature of henna has changed over time, Ms Tuteja said. “It marks celebration now, but it used to be done authentically for weddings only for women … to symbolise a new start in your life. “It’s not only restricted to the Indian community, it’s a sign of festivity. “The art is now also worn by kids and men as well.” Two sessions will be held on July 28, at 5.15pm and 6.30pm, and are open to people 15 years and older. Melton: bargain location By Esther Lauaki Melton continues to be one of Melbourne’s most affordable suburbs, where home buyers can still buy for under $400,000, according to the latest figures. New Real Estate Institute of Victoria data shows the median house price in Melton’s south was $342,500 for the year to June 30, while the median in Melton West was about $397,000. REIV acting president Richard Simpson said despite Melton West’s 14.1 per cent growth in
the most recent quarter, property there was still priced well below the metropolitan median of $822,000 (up 2.9 per cent). Jason Ryder, of Ryder Professional in Melton, said the performance of the housing market across the municipality in recent months had been “quite spectacular”. But he said that home buyers could still pick up a three- or four-bedroom home for under $400,000, which was a rarity in other parts of the state. The REIV data highlighted one of the top

‘bargains’ in the state – a property in Carberry Drive, Kurunjang which went for $362,000 before auction earlier this month. “As the other suburbs have increased in their median ranges quite significantly, so has Melton,” Mr Ryder said. “The value of properties in Kurunjang are very similar to those in Melton West and the growth rate is also comparable. “There are parts of Kurunjang that have premier larger properties so that can lift the median in that suburb a bit … if we are

comparing similar homes then both areas are performing similarly.” Mr Simpson said the 14.1 per cent growth in Melton West’s property market was the result of population increases, record low interest rates and strong buyer demand. “It’s certainly a sellers’ market at present with strong competition for homes … particularly in Melbourne’s more affordable areas,” he said. House prices in regional Victoria rose strongly for the second consecutive quarter, up two per cent to a record high of $385,000.

Kitchen hazards fuel fire stats By Esther Lauaki Firefighters were called out to 55 preventable fires in Melton last year. Almost half of those fires started in the kitchen, the latest Country Fire Authority statistics released earlier this month revealed. The figures were down 14 per cent on the previous year where firefighters responded to 63 preventable house fires. CFA chief Steve Warrington said winter remained a traditionally busy time for firefighters.
“There is a perception in the community that the majority of fires tend to happen in summer, but this simply isn’t the case,” Mr Warrington said. “As the weather cools down, people bring out their heaters, turn on their electric blankets and stoke up their wood fires. This means we see a spike in heating-related fires.” The kitchen continues to be a fire hotspot, mainly due to unattended cooking, he said. Faulty electrical distribution, electrical appliances and central heating are also major causes.
“Taking small safety precautions could be the difference between life and death. It’s just not worth the risk for you or your family,” Mr Warrington said. “Unattended cooking is a major hazard all year round. This often happens when people are distracted and forget about that pot boiling on the stove, or leave something in the oven while they run a quick errand. “We also find that people leave candles and oil burners unattended in a dangerous position where they can catch on to curtains and other flammable items.”
Statewide, crews attended more than 3000 preventable residential fires last year. More than a third of those were in the kitchen and other top areas of origin included the bedroom (254) and lounge room (209). MFB acting chief officer Paul Stacchino said while the state experienced less preventable residential fires overall than in the previous year, the numbers were too high. “Last year 14 people died in preventable house fires in our state. That’s 14 grieving families living without their loved ones. This isn’t a number our community should accept.”

Men’s Shed toys with new project Sheddies are also working on doll houses and mini wooden kitchens, which will be ready for delivery in coming weeks. Melton mayor Sophie Ramsey said it was a joy to support a project that brought smiles to so many faces. “Initiatives like this aren’t only important to the children receiving these beautiful toys, but also to the members of our Men’s Shed who relish the opportunity to give something back to their community,” Cr Ramsey said. “This partnership has given our members a real sense of purpose, and they’re thrilled to

Youngsters living in foster care will receive a handmade gift thanks to Taylors Hill “sheddies”. Members of Taylors Hill Men’s Shed have been hard at work recently creating handcrafted, wooden toys for babies, children and young people as part of a partnership between Melton council and Salvation Army Westcare. The colourful toys, which include trains, push-along carts, mini furniture and pull-along animals, will be delivered to children in foster care homes across Melbourne’s western suburbs.

Melton council has solved a mystery for one woman whose sleep was interrupted by the sound of a large drone buzzing above her Kurunjang home. A Sunday lie-in was off for Leanne Fawcett after being woken before 8.30am on July 9 by the noisy aircraft being flown around outside. She said the operators told her husband they were conducting surveying for Melton council – but the couple feared something more sinister. “Sunday of all days, we had a huge drone … flying over our home,” Ms Fawcett said. “My husband approached the people as this thing was so loud it sounded like a helicopter. “There was no signage on the van, no barriers to stop public access to operator or the drone as he was landing it on the foot path directly opposite our home. “Not notifying people with signage or letter drops to inform ratepayers of this kind of disturbance is not acceptable. “With home invasions and break-ins on the rise lately, I think that council should be more sensitive.” A council spokeswoman told Star Weekly last week that Melton council workers were surveying for a new park. “From time to time, council engages contractors to obtain remotely piloted aircraft footage of areas to be used for advocacy purposes,” the spokeswoman said. It was necessary to conduct the surveying in the morning to ensure there were few people around, she explained. “Council ensures contractors have the appropriate insurance and registration as per the Civil Aviation Safety Authority’s rules around commercially operating a remotely piloted aircraft.”

Alicia, Max and Kali will participate in the Schools Spectacular. (Shawn Smits)
Dancing up a storm Rehearsals are under way as Melton West Primary School children prepare to shine in the Victorian State Schools Spectacular later this year. The annual production involves more than 3000 students from 200 state government schools participating in dance, music, song, puppetry, magic and behind the scenes stage management, lighting and audio. This is the third year Melton West has taken part in the event, which will be held on September 16 at Hisense Arena. Thirteen students will be showing off their moves in the mass dance portion of the show. Supervising teacher Deena Henaway said the students have been honing their skills for months.
“The students have started practising the dances every Friday since March this year,” Ms Henaway said. “These students feel the music and put their hearts into it and enjoy every minute of dancing. “I strongly believe that they will take away persistence and determination. These dances aren’t easy to learn and there are many dances to learn. They know to keep their heads up high, have fun, and go at their pace and they will get each of those dances down pat.” The students will spend the day rehearsing their routines with other schools and choreographers before the Spectacular. Bacchus Marsh man in Bali strife
A Bacchus Marsh man was detained at Ngurah Rai International Airport in Bali last week by police after a dramatic 90-minute standoff. Crossing work shuts highway A section of the Melton Highway will close for four days as work ramps up on the removal of the level crossing in Sydenham. Between Friday, July 28, and Monday, July 31, the highway will close and detours will be in place while bridge beams are built over the Sunbury/Bendigo railway line. Train services will be suspended between Sunbury and Sunshine stations, with buses replacing trains. Four bus routes – the 425, 460, 462 and 476 – will not be able to cross the Melton Highway level crossing. Instead, buses will take passengers to and from Watergardens station, where they will have to cross the tracks to meet buses waiting on the other side. Road detours will also be in place over that weekend. The closure, which will come into effect at 8pm on the Friday and remain until 8am on the Monday, will allow construction crews to lower train power lines and install the first sections of the new road bridge. The $46 million project will remove the level crossing and widen the Melton Highway to three lanes by late next year. The level crossing is considered one of the state’s most dangerous and a major cause of peak hour traffic chaos, with boom gates down for about a quarter of the morning peak. Last week, Fairfax revealed that more than $20 million would be spent spruiking the level crossing removal program to counter a backlash against the project in some communities.

Late last year, when plans emerged of the “sky bridge” planned to replace the Sydenham level crossing, residents spoke out about the “cheap” and “invasive” option the state government had chosen, claiming proper community consultation had not been undertaken. Internal Andrews government documents seen by Fairfax reveal the $20 million will be funnelled into print, radio, online, outdoor and television advertising. So far advertisements for the projects have included lavish animations and time-lapse videos. The Level Crossing Removal Authority will hold all-day information sessions at Watergardens Town Centre, near Bakers Delight, on Saturday, July 22, and Sunday, July 23, to discuss the project’s impacts.
Growing for the future Students from Christ the Priest primary school join thousands of children around the state who will be rolling up their sleeves and mucking in to plant trees and shrubs this week. Grade two Caroline Springs pupils will be setting down roots at their school tomorrow so they can learn about sustainability and plant trees for future generations as part of Planet Ark’s Schools Tree Day. Bunnings Warehouse Caroline Springs staff will also pop in to help plant greenery in the schoolyard that students can enjoy and will also help to maintain. School maintenance officer Michael Turville said it was an opportunity for the children to learn how fun gardening can be.
“It’s something a bit different for them to take part in and it might sow seeds [for] them to become gardeners later on,” Mr Turville said. Bunnings manager Lauren Bottams said the team enjoys visiting a local school each year to help out. “Schools Tree Day is an important initiative that we enjoy supporting by teaming up with students to get planting and learn more about the environment,” she said. Schools Tree Day, which coincides with National Tree Day on July 30, aims to connect children with nature and empower them to make a difference in their local environment. Esther Lauaki

Planters mourn loss of trees to housing A Melton man is mourning the loss of hundreds of trees that have been cleared for development. Terry Manning and members of local environmental groups all had a hand in planting the trees on the eastern side of Toolern Creek at Blamey Drive, Melton South, more than a decade ago. A small number of the trees along Toolern Creek remain but most of those trees were cleared for housing development in one of Melton’s 11 new suburbs – Cobblebank. Mr Manning said he wanted to raise the issue in light of this weekend’s National Tree Day, which will include a number of planting events around Melton. “I assisted members of the Melton Bushwalkers, local environment groups and local school children to plant a few hundred trees in that area,” Mr Manning told the Star Weekly. “The trees were well established and would have made a natural park for the soon-to-be residents of the development … However, the majority of the trees have now been cut down.” He said that although no laws had been broken, because the land is privately owned, he was “not impressed”. “A few individuals have profited financially while the rest of us have lost a valuable asset.” Melton council officers have visited the site to make sure the works are complying with the approved plan and confirmed that developers were following the legal requirements, Mr Manning said. Melton mayor Sophie Ramsey said that, while she wants to ensure Melton retains as many trees as possible, some cannot be saved. “We try and avoid trees being cut down,
Terry Manning is unhappy that trees he helped plant more than a decade ago were cleared for housing development. (Supplied)
especially significant trees, to make sure that they are protected,” Cr Ramsey said. “In the past two years we’ve planted in excess of thousands of trees through our grants programs and tree-planting days. “If some trees needed to be sacrificed for housing to be built in Melton South, the developers of that estate would be required to plant quite a few more elsewhere to replace them. With development happening on eight fronts across the municipality … we have to be very careful in making sure that it’s a planned and systematic development so that Melton is not a patchwork quilt.” Esther Lauaki

Melton sprouts new suburbs

Cutting edge program By Esther Lauaki A Melton salon will soon recycle everything from hair cuttings to used foils in a bid to shave waste, save the environment and support charity. Hairdresser Prue Tomkinson will this week begin operating Lady and the Hair as a sustainable salon, meaning clients can now “look, feel and do good”.
“We are so excited to be doing this,” Ms Tomkinson said. “This program is designed for the salon to achieve zero waste, reduce its carbon footprint, and implement sustainable work practices that benefit the local community.” Ms Tomkinson believes the salon may be the first in Melton to “go green”, and she encouraged other businesses to join the movement. Hair will be donated to be used in filtration
systems for oil spill clean up projects, local community gardens and turned into wigs. All the proceeds from recycling the salon’s metals such as foils, colour tubes and cans will also be donated to community organisations. “Any leftover hair colour will be recycled into new liquids and once our tools reach their end of life, they will be broken down and all parts will be repurposed,” Ms Tomkinson said. The names of 11 new suburbs in Melton have been approved, with more than 5000 homes and businesses set to change their addresses from next month. Harkness, Weir Views, Cobblebank, Strathtulloh, Thornhill Park, Grangefields, Bonnie Brook, Aintree, Fieldstone, Fraser Rise and Deanside, have been named following approval from the Office of Geographic Names. Melton mayor Sophie Ramsey said the new suburbs were great news for Melton. “By creating these new suburbs, council can plan smaller, character-filled neighbourhoods that are easy to find and navigate,” Cr Ramsey said. “They’ll have their own particular landmarks and will remain as unique and diverse as the people who live there.” The new suburbs are in growth areas including Plumpton, Rockbank and Truganina, while smaller changes will also take place in well-established areas such as Melton South and Melton West. Three of the new suburbs, Aintree, Deanside and Fraser Rise, will have the new postcode, 3336, while most other areas will keep the same postcode. While some government agencies have already been updated with the new address details, the emergency services database will update on August 23. If affected residents call triple-0 over the next few months they may need to quote both their old and new addresses. Details: 9747 7200 Esther Lauaki

Hospital response time defended By Esther Lauaki Australia’s medical regulator has defended the time it has taken to investigate complaints against doctors at Bacchus Marsh hospital. The Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) faced media criticism last week that 17 practitioners were still being investigated two years after news broke of a cluster of baby deaths at Djerriwarrh Health Service that could have been avoided. The agency handles complaints and has the power to suspend the registration of doctors. A report by the agency released in March showed that AHPRA had notifications about at least three doctors at Bacchus Marsh and two of those doctors were still practicing with restrictions imposed. None of the doctors now work at the hospital and have since surrendered their licences. “So far, we have dealt with 101 matters concerning 40 practitioners and have finalised 58 matters, the largest single investigation we have ever undertaken,” a statement from the agency said. “We have now completed a number of investigations into health practitioners who worked at Bacchus Marsh Hospital at that time. “For families who have suffered terrible loss, our focus has been on ensuring each investigation is thorough and fair and that they are properly informed about the outcome.” The agency has since commissioned an independent review of its management of complaints and says it has made improvements. “Our processes for managing notifications about registered health practitioners have been subject to extensive scrutiny. This is welcomed because our work is important for the safety of the community,” it said in a statement.

A series of “tender and powerful” performances will be aimed at moving audiences when Attitude Dance Company’s latest production, Significance, hits the stage next month. Caroline Springs’ Jayson Fry is stage managing the show which plays at Courthouse Youth Arts in Geelong on August 11 and 12 and at Chapel off Chapel in Melbourne on August 13. Significance, an original contemporary dance work created by 25-year-old choreographer Xavier McGettigan, explores the moments people share. Fry said he believed audiences will relate to the stories on a deep, meaningful level. “Each piece tells a story and the nice thing about it is that the audience will interpret that based on their own life experience,” he said. “What you bring to the show in terms of your experiences, is what you get out of it. “I hope the audience go on a bit of a journey and a discovery of self, to come out of the performance at the end and feel like they experienced something.” McGettigan, the company director, said that the cast of 20 dancers would take audiences on a “mesmerising” journey. New suburbs are here
FYI... THE CITY OF MELTON ISN’T GETTING BIGGER. WE’RE JUST DIVIDING OUR SUBURBS UP DIFFERENTLY.

The new suburbs are being established in key growth areas including Plumpton, Rockbank and Truganina, while smaller changes will also take place in well-established areas like Melton South and Melton West. Over 5,000 homes and businesses will change addresses, and while most will continue to have the same postcodes, three of the new suburbs, Aintree, Deanside and Fraser Rise, will have the new postcode, 3336.

I am beyond thrilled to see works progressing on the much anticipated Abey Road Bridge project.
It’s a pleasure to announce that Council adopted its 2017/2018 Budget at its June ordinary meeting.
I have campaigned tirelessly for over 15 years to ensure that this vital piece of transport infrastructure becomes a reality, and now seeing it so close to fruition, is like a dream come true.
¾ ¬ ¬ © ª ¬ ¨ § § ª two per cent rate increase, in line with rate capping.
The Abey Road Bridge will provide an east-west connection across the Toolern Creek, connecting Abey and Brooklyn Roads, and will also provide alternative access to the Western Freeway, for residents, businesses and visitors alike. That means reduced ¡ ¢ While there’s still a little work to be done, including the installation of architectural features on the bridge, installation of guardrails and a retaining wall, footpath connection to the bridge and the completion of landscaping works in creek, this $5.6 million project has seen some major improvements to road transport connectivity in the area. Key features of the project include 850 meters of new carriageway on Abey Road, improvements to Brooklyn Road, connection of bike and walking tracks increasing the path networks by 800 meters, landscaping works, and of course, the bridge itself. The bridge is scheduled to be completed in August, and I for one cannot wait to take « ¢ ¬ ¡ ® ¯ ° ±± ® °²° ² ® ¡¡ ¡¡« on 23 August.
Several major transport infrastructure projects have been included, with the duplication of Hume Drive, Taylors Hill, from Overton Lea Boulevard and Calder Park Drive, particularly exciting news for residents of Watts Ward. This 1.3km project will see much needed improvements to this very busy thoroughfare, ¡° ´ ¯ ¡¡ ´ ¡ ¾ ® ¡¡ ² ³ ° ° ® ¯ Brimbank City Council. Even more good news for Watts Ward residents is that construction of stage one of Taylors Hill West Secondary College is set to be completed by the end of 2017. The brand new facility will be ready for year 7 and 10 students in term 1, 2018. Additional funding was also made available in the 2017/2018 State Budget, to build the remaining stages of the school, which will eventually accommodate around 1,100 students. This is such an exciting project for families and young people living in the Taylors Hill community who I’m sure are relieved at that additional education facilities are being established in our community.
This is great news for our fast growing community, enabling Council to plan smaller, ¯ ³ ¡¡ ´¯² ° ¯ ¯ « ´ ¢ µ¯ «¶¡¡ ¯ ¯ own particular landmarks and will remain as unique and diverse as the people who live there. For more information, visit melton.vic.gov.au/newsuburbs
Finally, I’d like to congratulate Victoria Police, for organising two very successful Community Safety Forums, in Melton and Caroline Springs, addressing safety, security and crime in our municipality. It was wonderful to see so many residents ° ° ¯ ´ ® Å ¯ ° ¡ ¡ ¡ ¾ ¯ their thoughts on how to improve community safety in our neighbourhoods. Well done to everyone involved.

Ambos flee footy match A footballer with a broken leg was left stranded for up to two hours after paramedics left a match fearing for their safety. Ambulance Victoria said the two-person crew left the field at Melton after being verbally threatened and intimidated by a group of people earlier this month. The player, Daniel Vasjuta, said the pain was “10 out of 10 for a long time” as he waited for treatment. Melton South Football Club president Brendan Morrissey disputes the claim. He told The Ballarat Courier that one person, believed to be homeless, had yelled at the paramedics and the crew was offered assistance when they expressed concerns. “I was there,” he said. Melton South was minutes into the third quarter of the Ballarat Football League senior match when Vasjuta fractured his fibula and dislocated an ankle. A triple-0 call was received at 3.47pm. Emergency demand was high at the time and paramedics arrived at 4.36pm. Ambulance Victoria emergency operations executive director Mick Stephenson said the crew activated their duress alarm soon after. A paramedic in Ambulance Victoria’s communications centre was also verbally abused in a later triple-0 call, he said. A second crew returned to the ground with a police escort and Vasjuta was taken to hospital in a stable condition about 6.20pm. “Paramedics need to treat patients in an environment where they are safe,” Mr Stephenson said. “There is no excuse for intimidation towards paramedics who had gone to care for an injured man.” Vasjuta said he was aware of the reasons for the delay in getting treatment.
An x-ray of Daniel Vasjuta’s broken leg. (The Ballarat Courier)
“I was just trying to stay calm but the longer it got I started to stress about not getting treated and that I might lose my leg or something. “But the trainers, family, friends and my coach Brendan Fevola did a really great job of keeping me calm and really helped me from going into shock.” The Melton South Football and Netball Club Past Players said in a Facebook post the man
involved had no affiliation with the club and would be refused entry in the future. The Ballarat Football Netball League said it was investigating the matter and would not comment further until inquiries were complete. Ambulance Victoria is also investigating the incident. – The Age

Sign of the times for streetscape Poorly designed advertising in shops in Melton’s town centre could be bound for the scrap heap as the council looks at new signage guidelines. Council’s draft advertising signage design guidelines are out for public feedback until Friday, August 4. The guidelines will apply to all planning permit applications for signs across the municipality. Mayor Sophie Ramsey said advertising has a significant impact on local streetscapes and buildings helping to identify, communicate and market businesses. “Well-placed signs in the right locations can add colour and interest to an area,” Cr Ramsey said. “But too many signs, or poorly designed signs, can reduce their effectiveness and detract from the look of our city.” The advertising signage design guidelines will help council manage advertising signage in the built environment and balance the expectations of business with those of the broader community. Residents can complete the online survey at www.melton.vic.gov.au/ advertisingsignage before 5pm on August 4. Information: citysupport@melton. vic.gov.au Esther Lauaki

MY PLACE Burnside Heights glamazon Achol Manoah, 17, loves where she lives. The Copperfield College student talks to Stella Tzobanakis.
It’s really just a nice place. And I find it really easy to get around. It has really good public transport. To get to other suburbs and even to the city is really easy from here.
How does it compare with the rest of the west? It’s pretty chill here. It’s very spacious. It’s a new area and people are pretty nice. There’s a real sense of community and safety.
What is your favourite place to hang out in the area?
If there was anything you could change about your suburb, what would it be?
There is this park (Tenterfield Park off Tenterfield Drive) that I love. It has a river flowing through it and in the summer, it’s so nice to have a picnic there; it’s pretty cool really. I like to go to Watergardens (Town Centre) with my friends too, oh and the (Sydenham) library. I study and use the internet.
I want more people to come here. I want there to be lots more people here. There are a lot of houses for sale here but not that many people. I want the neighbourhood to be like it is in Neighbours. Lots of people around chatting and saying ‘hello’.
If anyone came from overseas, where would you take them? I would take them to Caroline Springs, Taylors Hill and Sydenham. There are so many walking trails and parks there. I like to go there often and explore. Also Sunshine, there’s this beautiful garden in Sunshine (H.V. McKay Memorial Gardens). It’s just really a peaceful place and there’s all these beautiful flowers. When I was living in Delahey for a few years, I didn’t get out much and I started exploring the area. When I discovered these areas I was like ‘wow’ and I just keep doing it again and again.
Tell me about where you’re rushing off to now? I’m preparing for the Miss South Sudan pageant. I’m competing for the first time. I was really motivated to do it; I thought, this will be a good way to break stereotypes about my community. What I mean is that you can be out there doing something positive, being a good role model. What’s your dream? To be a role model for my community as well as a motivator. I really like talking to people and people seem to really like talking to me. I’d like to be some sort of therapist or psychologist.

Tax time has arrived and the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) is reminding taxpayers to take their time to get it right. Assistant Commissioner Kath Anderson said 2.8 million people lodged their tax return in July last year, which is 22 per cent of all tax returns lodged for 2015-16. “We know that some taxpayers like to get in early and lodge in the first month of tax time, but our analysis shows that if you lodge in July, you’re far more likely to make a mistake by leaving out some of your income,” Ms Anderson said. “By mid-August we have pre-filled most of the data from employers, banks, government agencies and other third parties. Waiting until this information is available will help you avoid mistakes.” “For many people waiting until August means all they have to do is double-check the information we have pre-filled, enter any deductions and then hit submit.” Ms Anderson said taxpayers don’t need to get into a rush to lodge their tax returns early. “It’s great to see taxpayers eager to finalise their returns, but it’s your responsibility to make sure you declare all your income. This includes income from any cash jobs, the sharing economy, your second job, foreign sources, employee share schemes and capital gains from the disposal of shares and property.” “Our systems are great at finding errors in tax returns, and if we have to investigate something further in your tax return.” Ms Anderson said people can choose to lodge using the ATO’s online lodgment tool myTax, which is fast, easy and secure, or they can lodge with a registered tax agent. “If you have been using the myDeductions tool, which is available in the ATO app, to save and store your deductions, you can upload

You must report all income, including pay from second jobs, foreign income, bank interest and any government payments. Lodging before pre-fill is the leading cause of taxpayers incorrectly declaring income. For more information about the sharing economy, visit ato.gov.au/sharingeconomy.

4. Know what you can claim Remember the three golden rules for claiming a deduction for a work-related expense: • You must have spent the money yourself and not have been reimbursed • It must be directly related to earning your income • You must have a record to prove it

If an expense was for both work and private purposes, you can only claim a deduction for the work-related portion. You can find information on what deductions you can and can’t claim on our website – we have also published guides for a range of specific occupations.

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir relaxes with succulent seafood and sweets... Since its early days, covered by us here, one of the loveliest things to observe about Fig & Walnut in Seddon is what a relaxed and lovely retreat it has become. It all fits with relaxing ease – including the superb garden area outside. Fig & Walnut has become one of our regulars, for coffee mostly and sweet treats, with the occasional more hefty meal included. So we’re only too happy to accept Vera’s invitation (see full disclosure below) to take her new menu for a spin. New menu? Perversely, I ignore it and go for one of the revolving specials – Brazilian seafood soup ($17). With its sprigs of coriander, I firstly think this is going to be a dish with an Asian bent. But, no, this seems firmly in the Mediterranean mold despite its South American attribution. The sensational foundation is a tomato-based broth that is extremely deep in flavour – it’s simply brilliant. In it are blobs of fresh tomato and red capsicum. In it, too, is generous bounty of seafood – medium-size prawns of superb, large-size flavour; pipis and mussels; and several nice chunks of barramdundi. This is high-quality seafood cooking, especially given the price. Danya’s vegan bowl ($19) is a bit of an odd choice for us, but we like it a lot anyway.
FIG & WALNUT Address: 11-13 Bellairs Avenue, Seddon Phone: 0433 574 194 Somehow, the apparently disparate ingredients come together to create a satisfying whole. At its base are a heap of cold noodles and a fine house-made satay sauce, abetted by bok choy and eggplant. Even the pumpkin, normally a no-go area for us, plays a handy role by being so tender that it seems to become part of an extended dressing/ sauce, with chilli shavings adding just the right amount of zing. Fig & Walnut is a sweet treat haven, though it takes a different tack to most places by putting the accent on an oft-changing range of smaller offerings instead of a line-up of regular cakes. For example, classic almond crescents. We’ve all had them before – but rarely are they of such crumbly freshness and lemon-scented joy.

Top-shelf help in the diabetes battle Australia is in the grip of a diabetes epidemic. Every day, 280 Australians are diagnosed with diabetes and an estimated 500,000 are living with the condition – often without knowing.
I
t’s an illness sweeping the nation, including Melton, at an alarming rate. The prevalence of diabetes in Melton is currently 6.5 per cent of the population, which rates as “very high” when compared with the Victorian average of 5.1 per cent. In response to these high numbers, the specialist care of people with diabetes in Melton and Moorabool is being given priority. Djerriwarrh Health Services – in partnership with local general practitioners – is providing comprehensive diabetes care via six diabetes nurse educators and three endocrinologists. Diabetes nurse educator Chris Perry says effective diabetes management is possible and can be implemented in close consultation with diabetes educators. “We assist patients in tackling their diabetes in ways that best suit their needs and, by using new monitoring technologies and medications, we ensure they can manage their conditions easily and effectively,” she says. “We can explain the medication combinations now available through the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme, and also advise on appropriate blood glucose monitoring equipment for people with diabetes. “Having regular blood tests with a

GP is the most effective way to assess diabetes risk and a crucial tool in diabetes management long term.” Chris says that a “silent” side-effect of diabetes is the emotional impact on people who have to adapt to living with a chronic illness. “Following diagnosis, it’s common for people to experience feelings such as disbelief, guilt, anger, fear and sadness,” she says.
“And for every person diagnosed, there’s often a family member or carer who also ‘lives with diabetes’ every day. It’s therefore crucial to connect with others facing the daily challenge, which is where the Melton and Bacchus Marsh Diabetes Support Group comes in.” Offering local assistance for more than a decade and sponsored by Djerriwarrh Health Services, the uplifting and committed support group has regular

M
ore than 200 guests attended the event to try out the cuisine of Palm Lake Resort’s in-house chef and tour the facilities of what is one of the more popular 50-plus lifestyle villages in the west. Palm Lake Resort spokesperson Zoe Ilich-Paul says such events are held regularly. “We love hosting events with our residents,” she says. “It’s great for community atmosphere and, at the end of the day, it is great fun.” On the day of the food festival, Combo La Revelacion, a well-known Latin-American band based in Melbourne, played South American music that had everyone dancing. “Our chef did an amazing job of preparing all of the great international meals that were enjoyed by all on the day,” Zoe says. Four display homes were open for viewing and showcased the best that Palm Lake Resort at Truganina has to offer. “We’re really excited as we only have five villas left,” Zoe says. “The community we have built with the active help and participation of our residents is brilliant.” Palm Lake Resort staff and management understand the importance of providing a quality and style of living that is truly top shelf.

With 233 villas, Palm Lake Resort is big enough to feel like a small country town. It is set in a relaxing location close to the South Werribee Marina and local shopping, but with so many different in-house activities, you won’t want to leave. “Our Truganina facilities include our restaurant at the club, a gym, library, internet facilities, spa, workshop, bar, bowling green, games room, pool, indoor bowls and a barbecue area,” Zoe says. “There’s actually more. Melton’s top draw for the law When Saines & Partners merged with Lucas & Marshman nine years ago, it brought together highly credentialled legal firms to become Saines Lucas.
E
stablished in Ballarat in 1939, Saines Lucas is the largest independent personal injury firm in Western Victoria with seven offices. Its last senior partner, Ron Saines, left in 2002 to take up an appointment as a magistrate. Nick Lyons, with 26 years’ experience as a personal injury lawyer, more than half of that as an accredited personal injury specialist, became managing partner and now offers his skills out of the WPC Lawyers’ office in Melton. Saines Lucas long-standing practice manager, Malcolm Sinclair, says coupling the Saines Lucas personal injury specialty with WPC Lawyers’ wills and conveyancing specialties, and criminal and commercial law expertise, is a boon for residents of Melton and surrounding areas. “All legal requirements are met under the same roof, with people able to access the service that best suits their needs,” Malcolm says. “Why use us? The answer is simply that we are excellent at what we do and are committed to our clients’ interests. “We have skill, experience and an unrivalled depth of knowledge in our areas of practice, plus a capacity for hard work. Our enviable reputation is a result of our pro-active approach to identifying legal obstacles, developing strategies to overcome them. “This is the key reason why the

vast majority of our business comes from referrals from clients and other professionals.” Malcolm says the firm’s approach is professional and friendly, with the provision of no-nonsense, plain-English explanations – making the law clearer and easier to understand so that clients are fully aware of
risks and options. “We identify a client’s needs, formulate a plan with them to ensure those needs are met within their timeframe and budget then put the plan into effect,” he says. “Clients are involved at every stage throughout the process and kept fully informed. “They will always have a clear explanation
from us on how we intend to solve the problem, how long it will take and how much it will likely cost. This approach is welcomed by our many clients.” Saines Lucas and WPC Lawyers, 33 Bakery Square, Melton. Inquiries: 5332 1584 or www.saineslucas.com.au

ut tax isn’t all that Tax Concepts specialise in. Director Rob Maslak says Tax Concepts has significant expertise in the property investment advisory field. “Our existing clients understand that we have a niche in that area,” he says. “They tend to use us at tax time and also to manage the tax implications and complications that can come with property investment. “With property investments the new big thing is wealth creation, a lot of people just rush out and buy a second or third property without doing a lot of research first. Research is imperative. “The biggest thing is to find someone you are comfortable with and get the information you need to make smart investment choices. “That is what we try to get across to our clients. A lot of people go in gung-ho and don’t do the research first.” Rob says there are tax changes to consider with regards to property investments. “On July 1 there were significant changes with regards to property investment as to what can be claimed,” he says. “The two areas of focus have been travel deductions for property investors and also depreciation claims.” Now in the outfit’s “second tax season”

Whether a huge food festival, a 21st birthday party at home or a wedding, Steve has seen it all and has the same attention to detail with every project. “As we supply all audio-visual hire and support, lighting, seating, trestle tables as well as marquees and all the accessories and additional products you need for parties and events, people tend to come to us who need the nuts-and-bolts of their event locked down. reat for all older drivers, the event will be an ideal opportunity to get driving information and tips, once-overs for vehicles from professionals and explanations of all new road laws. Bring your car, a pen and a notebook. Open to anyone in Hobsons Bay, Wyndham, Melton and Maribyrnong, the expo is a RoadSafe Westgate Community Road Safety Council initiative. RoadSafe Westgate chairman Jim Giddings says his group is committed to supporting older drivers. “We can all be better drivers with a few simple things, like keeping up with new road laws and making sure our health is as good as can be,” Jim says. “Getting rid of bad driving habits and keeping our cars in good condition are other vital ingredients of safe driving.” Each expo participant can have a professional, such as a VicRoads roadworthy officer, look over their vehicle, and registered driving instructors can identify “short-cut” habits drivers may have adopted over time. A VicRoads expert will advise on tyre care; updates on health, medicine-driver interaction and road rules will be provided; and road safety questions can be asked of the Highway Patrol. Attendees will get a free carry bag packed with copies of Senior Drivers Handbook and Driving in Victoria: Rules & Responsibilities. A morning tea and light lunch will be supplied at no cost.

Family approach helps law firm Callea Pearce Lawyers, a vibrant firm with offices in Melton and Werribee, has a team of experts who, according to managing director James-Anthony (aka JA) Callea, are a personable bunch who keep the legal mumbo-jumbo to a minimum.
T
he practice covers many aspects of law, including property, conveyancing, business and estate planning. JA says they particularly enjoy helping small businesses and the property sector. “Most of our clients are small to medium, family-held business owners and property investors in the western suburbs. “Being in business can be tough,” he says, “let alone being in business with family. As a family business ourselves, we understand the struggles that can bring. We help our clients prosper by assisting them to set up, grow and maintain their businesses and property portfolios.” Wills and deceased estates are other areas of law where Callea Pearce takes a proactive approach. “Most people don’t like to think about what will happen with their wealth after they pass. Many people work hard to build their wealth, but don’t have a plan as to how that wealth will be transitioned to the next generation. “We help clients plan and structure correctly to avoid any distressing disputes and to transition their wealth in a tax-effective manner. “Our experience has shown it is much better to plan for life’s hurdles and act in advance rather than wait until things go sour.” JA says that, as lawyers, it is vital they’re technically competent but he also wants clients to enjoy their experience.

“We believe that how we go about it is just as important as what we do. We spend considerable time with clients, identifying and understanding how we can best craft a solution that suits their individual needs.” The challenging time after the firm sadly lost its founder, Domenic Callea, to cancer
in March 2015, has required the team to work hard on future direction and how to better serve clients. “It’s become an exciting time for our team, seeing our client base rapidly expanding. We are delighted that John Wertheimer of Melton Law Offices has

Melton STARRs on TV - and at home Melton Secondary College has been making a splash on TV recently, with school captain Ben Akok telling his remarkable story on ABC’s 7.30 program, and two young college teachers who shared their first-year experiences on SBS’s Testing Teachers. “Our aim is to prepare all our young people to flourish as people, citizens and employees in the 21st century. They need to graduate with the skills and knowledge to navigate a future that will be quite different to now. “To achieve this, our curriculum and teaching style supports students’ growth as creative and critical thinkers. Students use technology to communicate and manipulate information and they have an ethical framework to support making positive decisions. “We acknowledge these intellectual, social and emotional capabilities are critical to academic success and our programs, ideas and approaches are geared around this. “The college employs a strength-based approach to student learning, undergirded by authentic care, respect and responsibility. We have programs designed to build a sense of belonging, school pride, optimism and civic purpose. “And the teaching style allows students to take risks and make errors and receive feedback to strengthen resilience. They’re taught how to develop character strengths and virtues that will underpin wellbeing and success.”
(Pictures: supplied)
T
he school is also getting outstanding results and recognition for its five STARR (Success, Teamwork, Ambition, Respect, Responsibility) college values, says principal David Reynolds. “Our Student Voice and Leadership team showed outstanding initiative and responsibility by developing the STARR awards system,” Mr Reynolds explains. “This system supports every member of our community to see the positive things our students do every day of the year. “It’s been wonderful to see a steady increase in the number of students receiving STARR points and it’s started some strong competition between our Houses to reach the highest number.” At least 11 languages are spoken by students at the college (75 per cent have English as a first language) and Mr Reynolds says the cultural mix stimulates the school to use emotional and relational capabilities to work collaboratively with people of so many backgrounds. Mr Reynolds speaks with passion about his school. “Having a diverse community brings great benefits to our students. It shows them how to appreciate the world we live in, the many differences and the many things we have in common. “Diversity and Harmony Days are exciting here – they get students, staff and the community together in happy celebration.

Flawlessly presented and on a block of about 925 square metres, this five-year-old abode will have many admirers. Entry is to a tiled walkway that bisects open lounge and dining rooms with the same floating floorboards that continue in the expansive living hub. The schmick, all-white kitchen has a waterfall Caesarstone island bench, glass splashback, loads of storage and all the shiny mod-cons. Along with a study, there are three beige-carpeted fitted bedrooms, the main with walk-in wardrobe and sleek en suite. A huge gabled pergola (with power and plumbing) sits above grey concrete that wraps around to the back. The huge backyard will inspire dreams – perhaps of a pool or tradie’s shed. Other perks include ducted heating, evaporative cooling, alarm, side double gates and an extended double garage with 15-amp power.
Situated in Botanica Springs estate in Brookfield on about 555 square metres, this new house has plenty of space for a family with five fitted bedrooms, the main with twin robes and an elegantly-styled en suite with twin basins. The kitchen is large, with a walk-in pantry to rival most others and a 900mm stainless-steel oven. Three separate living areas comprise the front lounge room, open-plan family room and rumpus with breathtaking views of nearby grasslands. The front and back yards await new owners to transform with a creative touch. Features include ducted heating, evaporative cooling and high ceilings, and there is ample storage and a double garage with rear and internal access.

This is a place with presentation in all aspects at a par excellent standard. Everything gleams with freshness, and decor tweaks and additions by the owners add extra style and liveability. Beyond pristine front gardens, entry is to an entry laid with glossy off-white floor tiles. These flow past two of the four bedrooms and a carpeted lounge room then into the light-filled living hub. roller blinds to deliver an interior to admire. Through double doors off the entry hall, the main bedroom has a fitted walk-in robe and an open en suite with dual vanity basins. The other fitted bedroom along the hall is also through double doors and could easily be converted to a theatre or play room. Two more large fitted bedrooms are down a tiled rear hallway, as are a sparkling main bathroom, separate toilet and a laundry with walk-in closet. The open lounge room preceding the hub incorporates a fab study area with stacks
of soft-close vinyl-wrap cabinetry and a work station. Abutting a meals zone surrounded by windows, the kitchen has a return island bench able to seat at least six, pearl-grey laminate benches, cabinetry in grey and chocolate, a two-door pantry, a dishwasher and Technika 900mm cooker. A double-gabled pergola above decking is a great spot for entertaining and relaxing. Blinds can be pulled down all around to create a winter cocoon or summertime sun-buster. It faces a good wedge of

SPORT Melton faces relegation after disappointing loss Melton Phoenix continues to search for its second win of the state league four west season following another loss to Altona North on Saturday. With Altona North sitting in the middle of the table the Phoenix were not without a chance, but they struggled to curtail the home sides scoring options and went down 3-1. The Phoenix had to chase the game for the majority of the contest as the home side kicked the first two goals of the game to hold a 2-0 lead at half-time. From there the game evened up, with Melton giving as good as it got and sharing the spoils in the second half, but the damage had been done early and they fell to their 13th loss to remain rooted to the bottom of the table. While there is just six games left for the Phoenix to avoid relegation and give them a
glimmer of hope of salvaging their season, they play the three teams immediately above them on the table. It was better news for Melton in the reserves, with the Phoenix riding a four-goal haul to Jason Hill to secure a memorable 4-3 win. Hill was the standout player on the park as Melton registered just its third win of the season, and was able to hold off Altona North to move two games clear of the bottom of the ladder. Elsewhere, Spring Hills did its chances of promotion from state league five west no harm with a convincing 5-1 win over Melbourne Lions. With the first half a see-sawing battle, Spring Hills held on to a 2-1 lead at the break, but was able to break the game open and hit the back of the net regularly after half-time.
Captain Dylan Magro scored twice, while Josip Loncaric, Robert Magro and Zac Hancock each grabbed a goal in a good sign for their versatility. Spring Hills sit third on the table, just a point behind Melbourne Uni and five points behind table toppers Laverton Park in the fight for promotion. Spring Hills’ reserves also enjoyed a strong day against the Lions, coming away with a 3-0 win and extending its lead in fourth place on the ladder. Cobras nail a tough win By Ewen McRae Bacchus Marsh has taken over the Ballarat Football League top spot following a gritty win over Lake Wendouree in their top of the table clash on Saturday. On a day not made for pretty football, the Cobras shot out of the blocks at the Lakers’ home, but left the door open for the hosts with some wasteful kicking for goal. But the Cobras held on against the wind in the final quarter to claim a 7.21 (63)-7.10 (52) win. Bacchus Marsh coach Travis Hodgson said it was pleasing to hold on for the win after it looked like the Cobras may have blown their chances with poor accuracy. “It was really good for us to go up there and beat a good side – I think it was one of our best wins,” Hodgson said. “We wasted some opportunities early, kicked 3.9 early I think. With the wind blowing hard to one end, I thought we’d need to be four goals up at three-quarter time to be a chance. “We only led by around 10 points, but we were able to match them in the last against the wind, which was really good to see.” Kicking with a stiff breeze early, the Cobras could have nearly put the game to rest in a first quarter in which the ball went into the home side’s attacking 50 just once. With the wind playing havoc with long balls, Bacchus Marsh took the unusual step of starting key talls Trent Angwin, Daniel Burton and Rhys McNay on the bench. The move paid off, the Cobras getting the jump on the home side with a fleet of smaller runners. The visitors’ 27-0 quarter-time lead was whittled down to two points at the long break, setting the scene for a war of attrition in the second half. Kicking with the wind, Bacchus Marsh found it far harder to drive forward as the hosts shut down their run and limited their scoring options. With the Lakers coming home with the breeze, it looked like the Cobras might fall late. But to the visitors’ credit, their defensive game came to the fore when it was needed most, keeping the Lakers to 2.3 for the final term and kicking 2.5. The win was soured somewhat by a late hamstring injury to Kane White and a shoulder injury to under-16 player Jack Hehir. Hodgson said the win showed what his side was capable of with finals looming. “I thought we were in big trouble, but to do what we did into the wind in the last showed we deserved to win,” Hodgson said. “We’ve got that breathing space to make sure we sew up that double chance … if we can win over Melton South and Darley in the next two, we should make top spot ours.”
Hillside deliver masterclass in gale-force play Hillside kept its chances of finishing on top of the Essendon District Football League division one table alive following a smashing 57-point triumph over Westmeadows at Willowbrook Reserve on Saturday. With a howling wind to one end, home team Westmeadows had the first chance to take advantage and, while it created plenty of opportunities, it could manage just 2.6. While Hillside kicked just one goal in the opening term, it took chances in the second quarter with a blistering 15 minutes of football that turned the game on its head. The Sharks kicked six goals in 10 minutes, and 10 for the quarter to turn a nine-point deficit into a 36-point lead at half-time. Westmeadows had no answer through the middle of the ground, and its young line-up was given a lesson by a finals-ready side as the Sharks kicked five goals into the wind in the third to ensure the win – and four premiership points – was safe. Five goals to Brandon Coletta was the highlight of the day, while Julian Hemala and Victor Micallef were also strong contributors. The 16.17 (113)-7.14 (56) win has Hillside sitting alongside Glenroy and Tullamarine on 10 wins for the season, with this weekend’s clash against Glenroy a good chance of deciding the minor premiership. In division two, Burnside Heights was made to pay for a diabolical opening quarter against Moonee Valley as it went down by 29 points. The Burnside Bears failed to trouble the scorers in the first term, while at the other end the home side piled on 7.7 to set up what would prove to be a match-winning lead. The game swung wildly with whoever had the wind, as the Bears kicked five goals to two in the second term, but again fell behind when the hosts had the wind in the third as they kicked six goals to one. Ultimately the home side was able to make better use of the wind when its turn came and it took the four points, 17.11 (113)-11.18 (84).

Blistering start sets Diggers Rest up for stunning win A mammoth opening quarter set up a huge win for Diggers Rest’s netballers as they consolidated their place in the Riddell Football Netball League top six on Saturday. Taking on Woodend-Hesket, the Burras shot out of the blocks with 27 goals from 30 shots in the first period to open up a game-winning 20-goal lead. They continued on their merry way after the first break to secure an 82-40 victory. Diggers Rest coach Amy Carroll said her side’s performance was close to perfection. “I think that’s the best I’ve seen us play,’ she said. “You would say a 15-goal quarter is a good one, so to nearly double that was outstanding from us. “It was really great for us to have that big first quarter, because our starts are something we’ve really been working on. “It dinted their confidence … they were still a strong team, but it’s hard to come back from that.”
Carroll bagged 16 goals from as many shots in the early rout, while the return of Natasha Chokljat to the centre gave the transition play of the Burras real potency. The Burras extended their lead at every change, grabbing a further 19 goals in the second term and 22 in the third to continue the blitz. The bulging scoreline gave Carroll the chance to experiment with her line-up, something she hopes will stand the side in good stead come finals time. “We tried some different things, and I think that’s a real positive – that we could still play well with those changes,” Carroll said. “It’s good to have that flexibility to change depending on how we’re playing and who we’re playing. “It’s good for our confidence. I know our whole team is good enough to match it with those top teams – it’s just about bringing it when we play them now and in the finals.” Elsewhere, Lancefield was too strong for
Rockbank, with the home side knocking off the Rams by 18 goals. While it was tight early, an 18-goal third quarter for Lancefield broke the game open as Jordan Furness collected 13 goals from 14 shots on her way to 31. Rockbank was able to compete well for three quarters, but could not stop the flow of goals from Lancefield’s attackers in the 54-36 loss. Sunbury Kangaroos came agonizingly close to its first win of the season, fading late in the game as it went down to Riddell. The Kangaroos held the lead at each of the quarter breaks and were seven goals up at half-time, but let the game slip in the final term as Riddell stormed home to win 43-40. Ewen McRae

Burras ride wind to top By Ewen McRae Diggers Rest has climbed to equal top of the Riddell District Football League ladder following a grinding win at Woodend Hesket at Bloomdale Oval on Saturday. The split round gave Diggers Rest the chance to draw level with Rupertswood and Macedon ahead of their clash this weekend, and the Burras adjusted well to difficult conditions to come away with a 13.11 (89)-6.6 (42) win. With a howling gale blowing to one end, it was not a game for football purists, but Burras coach Shaun Sims was happy to get the right result for his side. “It was a tough day for football to be honest,” Sims said. “It was an old-school Diggers Day, really hard to move the ball and score, and I thought we played quite well under the circumstances.” Woodend Hesket had the wind for the first quarter and, while the home side Burras started the better with the first two goals, it was the visiting Hawks who got on a roll and held a 14-point lead at quarter-time. But when their turn came with the wind, the Burras didn’t waste their opportunity and flipped that deficit to go into the long break with a 34-point lead. Lachlan Langford was particularly potent, with three goals in the second term to guide the hosts to a position of strength. Kicking into the wind in the third term, the Burras turned to some Hollywood tactics, putting the majority of their players behind the bounce and running the ball forward with a ‘flying V’ to great effect. It did the trick for the home side as they went goal for goal with the Hawks to hold their lead, then stretch out to the final margin in the last quarter. After enduring a raft of injuries to key players, and some up-and-down form over the past month, Sims said to be sitting level with Rupertswood and Macedon was a good sign. “We’re building quite well towards finals, and some people won’t see that, but I’m confident when we’ve got a full team on the park we’ll be as good as anyone,” Sims said. “I think it’s the most open season I’ve ever seen, and if you’re not matching the opposition with your intent on the day then you’re in trouble. When we played Macedon two weeks ago we butchered the ball at times, but without a doubt that is the hardest I’ve seen us try for three years and we got the win. “So the positive thing for us is we know our best is as good as anyone, but when we miss that last 10 per cent we’re just an ordinary team, and our guys are starting to realise that.” After getting through the round unscathed on the injury front, Sims said the week off would do his side the world of good in the run towards finals. 58 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ JULY 25, 2017

Bacchus Marsh’s netballers slipped further behind the top six on the Ballarat Football Netball League ladder on Saturday, going down to Lake Wendouree to now sit two-and-a-half games outside of the finals places. The two sides could not be separated early, with eight goals a piece in the first quarter, but 25 goals to 14 in favour of Lake Wendouree over the next two quarters put the result to bed as it took the win 44-28. Elsewhere, Darley was competitive with Sebastopol all game, but gradually fell behind in the second half and went down 47-58. It was a commendable performance for Darley, which sits 10th on the ladder with Sebastopol second.
Hockey
Caroline Springs had to work hard, but it eventually maintained its unbeaten record in women’s Pennant F with a 4-2 win over third-placed Gippsland on Sunday. With Laura Brown, Brittany Webster, Aimee Jungfer, and Holly Azzopardi all scoring, the fledgling side was able to extend its lead at the top of the ladder to eight points with five games remaining. In women’s Metro B, Caroline Springs took a share of the points with Melbourne Uni as they played out a 1-1 draw, while the men’s Pennant G side fell to a 3-1 loss to Maccabi and remain rooted to the bottom of the table.
Rugby Union
Melton Rugby Union Club lost its first game in four weeks at the hands of Geelong when the two sides clashed in the penultimate round of the division two rugby season. With fourth-placed Melton travelling to face third-placed Geelong it was always going to be a fierce contest, and the opening half was a scoring frenzy as the Broncos led 31-30 at the break. It was a more dour affair in the second half, and eventually it was the home team who prevailed as they took a 44-38 win to move a game clear in third. With one game to go, Melton cannot be knocked out of the top four and will finalise their finals preparations against second-placed Kiwi Hawthorn.
Diggers Rest’s John Ryan breaks away from the pack in Saturday’s win. (Shawn Smits)
“We’re happy to be flying under the radar a bit, and the bye will definitely help to get a few guys fit and back in the team,” he said. “Michael Evans will come back next week,
Stuart Clarke will be close, Taylor Hine will be close, so we’re going to get some very handy footballers back and we’ll look to build from there.”

Win puts Melton in contention By Ewen McRae Melton’s hold on a Vic League Three finals place received a big boost at the weekend when the Mustangs scored an upset win over the ladder-leading Croydon Ranges. With Croydon dropping just two games for the season, and Melton with just three wins but sitting fourth on the ladder, it looked like a mismatch on paper, but no one told the Mustangs as they shot out of the blocks early and held on in the second half to secure a valuable three points. Melton coach Ryan Self said the 5-3 win showed his side was capable of matching it with anyone in the competition. “We’ve been saying for the past few weeks that we’ve hit our niche for how we want to play, and this showed what we can do, Self said. “It shows that our best hockey is better than the top side at the moment, so we’re pretty happy with how we’re playing and our confidence is up which shows in our play. The scoreboard was ticking over from early in the game, with Melton holding a 2-1 lead after 10 minutes. From there it become more of an arm wrestle, until two goals to the Mustangs in the final two minutes of the half broke the game open. After half-time it was a matter of hanging on for the home side, with Croydon coming at them hard in an attempt to reverse the result. They showed their class with two second
half goals, but the damage of the first half could not be reversed as the Mustangs held off a late charge to secure their best win of the season. Steve Lawrence was a constant threat up forward with two goals, giving him 15 for the season, while Lachie Vallance, Adrian May, and skipper Andrew Arnold all scored a goal in the crucial win. The majority of the goals came from good team play, sharing the ball around and opening up gaps rather than driving the ball straight into the circle and trying to force a short corner. Self said the importance of getting their best team on the field and playing as a unit in the run towards finals could not be underestimated. “It’s all starting to come together, and we had some injuries early in the year so it’s been a while since we’ve put the full side together, he said. “Now it’s all coming together, and at the right time of the season so it’s all falling into place. “We’re pretty keen to get into finals right now, and we’ve got a habit of beating the top teams when we need to so we can’t wait to get through these last five games.

MOTOR New XV refines a winning look Safety and style are the focus of this compact new SUV. The popularity of Subaru’s original XV all-wheel-drive small sports utility vehicle confirmed yet again the brand’s excellent track record in Australia of taking a punt on new segments and making it work. As it did it with the Outback and then the Forester, the introduction of the stylish and capable first-generation XV helped Subaru engage with a whole new audience of younger buyers and budding brand advocates. The latest second-generation high-riding XV – 95 per cent refreshed – is more of the same, but with a more pointed emphasis on driver safety features, potentially adventurous alternatives and value-for-money. And there are more infotainment and style features to engage with the target market. Arguably the best looking of the Subaru range, the XV looks hip enough, helped by some smart new colours. The hero orange colour of the first XV has been replaced by a different, brighter shade called sunshine orange. There are more significant changes than the superficiality of an eye-catching paint job. All variants above the base XV have a standard expanded Eyesight suite of safety features with lane-keeping assist (new to XV) to prevent drifting out of your lane, adaptive cruise control with brake light recognition to alert to dangers ahead, lane departure warning and impact-avoidance pre-collision braking

when the system detects your vehicle closing on the one ahead, and more. Using the new, more rigid, lower centre-of-gravity Subaru Global Platform, the XV is built around the Impreza’s five-door hatch body and drivetrains. With a generous 220mm ground clearance,
the new XV also gets some additional modest off-road credentials, the claim being that the new model is more fun and secure on dirt as well as bitumen. Every level is equipped with rudimentary under-body protection, hill descent control, and X-Mode, a system intended to make

traversing slippery tracks over steep hills much easier at the touch of a button. Like the Impreza on which it’s based, the XV is more spacious, with good rear knee and head room, more comfort touches, and now a more obvious premium look about the cabin. Standard across the XV range are hands-free
connectivity, music streaming and information technologies including Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, steering-wheel controls and voice recognition. There’s even a CD player for the Luddites. The choices of engine and transmission extend to, um, one – an all-new horizontally opposed 2.0-litre four-cylinder of modest 115kW/196Nm outputs and the latest continuously variable transmission (CVT). The engine is new, lighter and now has direct injection. CVTs do cop flak for their strange “slipping clutch, rubber-banding” sensation, which gives some drivers a disturbing disconnection of engine noise from forward progress. But judgment should be based on benefits versus the negatives such as the bizarre gearbox sounds and friction losses. Remember that CVT transmissions were quickly ditched from Formula One as soon as the rule makers got a sniff of a so-equipped 1993 Williams grand prix prototype. The advantages should be obvious – a CVT allows the engine to produce its maximum power at all times without delay. Subaru also points out that it’s impossible to ignore the CVT’s lighter weight, lower cost, simple structure, more compact size, easy servicing and good fuel economy. There are four trim and equipment levels using that clumsy Subaru badging of base 2.0i, mid-rung 2.0i-L, 2.0i-L Premium (which is in essence an L with sunroof and TomTom sat nav) and range-topping 2.0iS. Subaru has done a handy magic trick of cutting prices across the tiers. The base 2.0i is now $27,990 (plus on-road costs), down from the $29,240 of the old entry model though getting the new-generation touchscreen infotainment, X-Mode, smart key entry,

reversing camera, tyre pressure monitoring, seven airbags and 17-inch alloys. The 2.0i-L is listed at $30,340, a cut of $2400 despite added gear including Eyesight, bigger eight-inch touchscreen, dual-zone air, electric folding mirrors, snazzy orange stitching on cloth trim, leather trimmed steering wheel and more. The Premium is $32,140. The well-decked-out 2.0i-S is offered with leather upholstery, supportive heated front seats and a powered driver’s seat (but no lumbar adjust), 18-inch alloys, steering-reactive LED headlamps and other extra safety equipment, but comes in $300 cheaper than the old XV at $35,240. The dual-zone climate control system has been revised with larger air ducting and more
outlet modes. This not only improves air flow, but also produces a quieter cabin. The tailgate opening is now wider, allowing for easier accessibility to the cargo storage area which can be expanded to 765-litres by flipping forward the 40/60 split rear seat backs. All XVs have a temporary spare, though it’s an odd 185/65 R17 sizing that looks more robust than most. The S rides on 225/55 R18 Bridgestones; the base and L on 225/60 R70 Yokohamas. On the outside, the new XV is a mix of style and utilitarian intent, with resin wheel-arch mouldings, fog lamps and roof rails, with the 2.0i-S scoring flash silver roof rails and chrome-look window sills and door handles. Dash displays have clear and simple graphics
