Horses for courses

(Damjan Janevski)

It doesn’t matter where you come from – it’s about where you go. That’s the message that Sunbury schoolgirl Chloe O’Rourke hopes to project through her commitment to horse riding. Eleven-year-old Chloe was Sunbury Primary School’s solo representative in its debut at Bacchus Marsh Grammar Interschool Dressage and Showjumping Day last Friday. Donning her school uniform, Chloe represented the small public school with poise and was placed equal second in the dressage event. Chloe’s mother Sharon O’Rourke said Chloe wanted to show that competing was about determination and support rather than wealth. Ms O’Rourke said Chloe trained every day in the lead-up to the competition with support from Sunbury Pony Club’s teachers and past riders. The club also paid for Chloe’s entry into the event. Ms O’Rourke said her daughter wanted to promote horse riding as a sport at public schools. “You see netball and basketball as school sports, but you don’t see much horse riding.” CHLOE O’ROURKE WITH HER HORSE SAM

Police call safety forum Police have called a community safety forum in response to a spate of violent crimes in Melton in recent weeks. Residents have been on higher alert as police put the call out for information regarding four home invasions this month, all within days of each other. Shots being fired at a truck in High Street and the alleged assault of two teenagers outside a shopping centre have heightened resident’s safety fears. “As the local inspector, I know all too well these types of crimes are terribly frightening for the victims,” Melton Inspector Kathryn Rudkins said. “Our number one priority is and will always

be the safety and security of the entire Melton community. “We’ll continue to conduct regular, intelligence-led patrols to detect, deter and disrupt criminal or antisocial behaviour. “But we need the community to help.” On the Caroline Springs Residents Facebook page, many locals have been calling for the state and local government to do something about the crime wave. Residents said they felt “helpless”. “Residents haven’t slept soundly for over a year,” one post said. “We live with fear of any noise, or helicopter outside … we want action, a preventative strategy. How many victims are needed before something is done?”

At the community safety forum Melton Police will discuss ways for residents to reduce the risks of becoming burglary victims. Inspector Rudkins said detectives had made arrests in some of the recent cases and more were expected. She is urging residents to report anything suspicious to police, to ensure that vehicles are parked in garages where possible and that external property doors are locked. Crime in Melton South increased 11 per cent overall between 2015 and 2016, according to the latest data from the Crime Statistics Agency. Home invasions in the area have steadily increased since 2013, jumping by 20 per cent between 2015 and 2016. The safety forum will be held at Caroline Springs library on May 31 from 6.30pm.

“

Quick look:

May 16, Hillside: Two Melton men have been charged over a home invasion about 11am. May 17, Melton South: A group of about eight men armed with metal poles broke into a Gillespie Drive house just after 7pm. May 21, Rockbank: A 16-year-old boy has been charged after an alleged aggravated robbery and assault at a Rockbank house. May 21, Coburns shopping centre: Two Melbourne teenagers reported they had been ambushed by a group of older teens near the corner of High Street and Coburns Road. May 22, Brookfield: Police say a family of four were asleep in their home when five men entered the house about 1.20am. May 25, Melton West: Police investigate gunshots being fired at a truck in High Street.

CFA hoses down fears for future

‘‘

Volunteers will remain integral to Victoria’s - State government response

’’

The state government has pledged a package of more than $100 million to help the CFA with training, equipment and facilities if the reforms go ahead. The package will include a $56.2 million CFA Support Fund to strengthen volunteer recruitment, retention and training options, expand brigade support and develop leadership. A government statement said these reforms were “expected to take a number of years” to implement. “Volunteers will remain integral to Victoria’s response to fires and other emergencies, particularly in campaign and surge events,” the statement said.

Coming up mushrooms Business is booming for one Bacchus Marsh fungi farm. Parwan Valley Mushrooms has supplied a variety of button, cup and flat mushrooms to supermarkets for the past five years, and recently added two local supermarkets to a growing list of clients. Their products are now available at the refurbished Coles at Bacchus Marsh and the new Melton Station Square store. Parwan chief executive Tim Adlington said the farm employs more than 100 people from the community and production is expanding in line with growing demand.

He says he’s excited to share more of his produce with locals. “We are very passionate about growing high quality, fresh mushrooms here in Bacchus Marsh and are proud to be able to share these with more customers.” he said.“In recent years, Parwan … has invested $10 million into our new facility to ensure we provide some of the best mushrooms in the country.” The farm produces about 2.6 million kilograms of mushroom on a yearly basis, with an average daily yield of about 7000 kilograms. It will be business as usual for Country Fire Authority staff and volunteers in Melton and Caroline Springs despite uncertainty about their future. The state government this month released a plan that, if approved by Parliament, would see the CFA split in two. The proposal would make the CFA a volunteer-only organisation, while a new agency, Fire Rescue Victoria (FRV), would be established to cover career firefighters who work in Melbourne and major regional areas. CFA volunteers serving at the state’s 35 integrated stations with career firefighters, such as Melton and Caroline Springs, would be able to stay put but would come under the supervision of the FRV. CFA chief officer Steve Warrington said that, at this stage, the organisation would remain “largely the same”. He assured the community that the service will continue to be provided now and into the future. “Our focus needs to be on supporting our service people … and providing our communities with the confidence that we’ll be there,” Mr Warrington said. “It’s a big announcement and there are a lot of questions that we all have and we need to work through that over a period of time – but the priority is that we continue to support our staff and volunteers particularly at our integrated stations.” Western Victoria MP Simon Ramsay said

breaking up the CFA was effectively handing over control to the United Firefighters Union. “Enormous power over the management and operational responsibilities of this new service [will now be with the union],” Mr Ramsay said. “Volunteers will slowly be marginalised and pushed out of previously integrated stations and as the union-controlled Fire Rescue Victoria extends its boundaries, with population growth, the future role of the CFA volunteer will become less clear.”

Building jobs in Truganina By Alesha Capone A western suburbs-based business will build a new $9.8 million manufacturing plant in Truganina. Unipod hopes the investment will help position the company for the next 30 years of growth as a major supplier to the construction industry. As well as the expansion, the Derrimut-based company will soon take on 92 new employees, with 85 of those positions suitable for former automotive workers. Unipod has secured a grant under the

state government’s Local Industry Fund for Transition (LIFT) for the expansion. The LIFT fund gives grants of up to $2 million to businesses which can create new jobs in areas affected by the closure of automotive manufacturing. Minister for Industry and Employment Wade Noonan announced the grant while in Derrimut on Friday. “We are proud to support Unipod so they can expand their operations in Melbourne’s west and create local jobs for local workers at a time when they are most needed,” Mr Noonan said.

‘‘

We are creating new pathways … in booming industries

’’

- Jill Hennessy

Unipod manufactures expanded polystyrene waffle pods which are used to build concrete slabs for new homes, extensions and commercial industrial buildings. The company’s Truganina plant will produce structural insulated panels to be used in wall,

roof, floor and civil construction projects. Mr Noonan said the LIFT program had also given a grant to the TFI Group (Total Fleet Imaging) in Laverton North, to create eight new jobs and expand its signage operations. Altona MP Jill Hennessy said the government knew that the west has been “hit hard by the end of local car manufacturing”. “That’s why we are creating new pathways for auto workers in booming industries like construction, so they can put their skills to good use,” she said. Island time in Melton The west’s rugby women will celebrate their sport in style at an island night this weekend. Rugby union players and supporters of all stripes are invited to the Western Districts Wildcats’ annual fundraiser at McPherson Park in Melton, especially if they’re frocked up in Polynesian finery. The women’s rugby union team, which is affiliated with the Brimbank Bucks Junior Rugby Club, Footscray Bulldogs and the Melton Warriors, is in its fifth season and includes players from around the state. Coach Aturo Kamuta says that Saturday’s event aims to boost support for women’s rugby union and raise the profile of the game in the west. “This is my first time coaching senior women’s rugby having worked with Brimbank and Victoria secondary colleges youth girls teams last year,” Kamuta says.

“To provide a pathway for women’s rugby, I believe we need to introduce women’s rugby into schools at college level and maintain it to keep them interested as they leave school. “At Western Districts, the players are keen, and they want to learn. The thing that’s surprised me the most is their commitment.” The Island night fundraiser starts at 7pm at the Melton Warriors Rugby Union Club on Saturday. Entry costs $10. Volunteers form the backbone of Djerriwarrh Health Services. Ten of those vital helpers were honoured for their long service with an award presentation and lunch in Bacchus Marsh earlier this month as part of National Volunteers Week. Between them, the 10 volunteers have been helping Djerriwarrh Health Services from 10 years up to 55 years. Collectively, the group has dedicated almost 300 years to the hospital’s auxiliary, Aboriginal community groups, consumer representatives, friendly visiting, hospital kiosk, transport, Meals on Wheels, Melton Health, Grant Lodge, the family violence prevention program/ women’s program and palliative care. At the lunch, chief executive Andrew

Freeman paid special tribute to “an extraordinary 55 years of continuous and dedicated service to the health service” by Pamela Broad and Heather Linsdell. Mr Freeman said acknowledging volunteers that have provided Djerriwarrh with a decade or more of dedicated service was important. “Djerriwarrh Health Services is extremely appreciative of the contribution our volunteers make on a daily basis,” he said. “The work our volunteers carry out is critical to the success and vitality of Djerriwarrh Health Services and I want to thank all our volunteers for their hard work year after year.” Esther Lauaki

Hoax investigation

The CFA is investigating a hoax call made to members last Thursday. CFA Victoria’s call centre was flooded with complaints from members who received automated phone calls warning that reforms announced by the state government would put families at risk. Chief executive Frances Diver said in a statement that the claims were “highly irresponsible and unfounded” and not an authorised message from CFA. Help on a tough road Bacchus Marsh is throwing its support behind a couple dealt two cruel blows in the past year. Robyn Johnson was diagnosed with stage two breast cancer in March 16 last year then endured three operations and 23 weeks of chemotherapy at Ballarat Hospital. During that time she was also diagnosed with a heart condition that requires ongoing medication and treatment. Heartbreak struck again when Robyn’s husband, Ian, was diagnosed with acute promyelocytic leukaemia in March, exactly a year since Robyn’s diagnosis. Ian is undergoing daily chemotherapy as an outpatient at the Olivia Newton John Cancer Centre in Heidelberg.

An online GoFundme campaign, set up by family friend Erin McNamara, has raised nearly $2000 in its first week to assist with the family’s travel expenses. Ms McNamara says the Bacchus Marsh community is rallying around the Johnsons, who are “doing it tough”.

“Travelling from Bacchus Marsh to Heidelberg was difficult, so visitation is limited,” she said. “Ian is currently resting at home before going back for a second round of daily chemotherapy. “He has been out of work for the past six years due to other medical issues, and being a one-wage household, finances are now pushed to the limits. “Both Robyn and Ian need numerous ongoing medications, specialist appointments and they have constant travelling expenses.” Robyn posts regular updates on her Facebook page for friends, family and supporters. “I would like to thank the amazing people of Bacchus Marsh for supporting myself and Ian,” Robyn wrote. Lamb raises the baaa Saturday is not your average lamb – she trots around thanks to a cart, sleeps in a “race car” and receives care on call. Born on a New South Wales hobby farm, this little Suffolk ewe struggled to walk but now has a new lease on life thanks to the ingenuity of carers at Edgar’s Mission, a not-for-profit sanctuary for rescued farm animals. Saturday was found to have congenital plasticity, meaning her back legs don’t work in a synchronised way with her brain’s messages. Thanks to Edgars Mission she now has a customised cart, with the wheels serving as her inactive hind legs. Serena Seyfort

Ballan aces aged-care engagement The old adage has it that it takes a village to raise a child, but at Ballan District Health and Care, aged-care staff know it takes a village to take care of its oldest citizens. The health service pipped three other finalists to win the Community Engagement award at the Leading Age Services Australia state conference earlier this month. The awards celebrated the achievements of Victoria’s aged-care industry and aim to increase public confidence and community involvement in the aged-care sector. It was Ballan District Health’s Priscilla Queen of the Desert high tea event, a collaboration between the Ballan Autumn Festival committee, aged residents and staff members that earned the hospital its award. Chief executive Wayne Weaire said the sell-out event in March enabled residents to show their acceptance of all people within the community. It was the efforts of residents, staff, volunteers, family members and members of the Ballan Autumn Festival committee that ensured the event’s success, he said. “This award is a tribute to the warmth of the Ballan community and the energy and inventiveness of our district’s aged-care residents,” Mr Weaire said. An expo next week is aimed at forging better connections between the Polynesian community in the western suburbs and community services. Organiser Manu Tilialo-Ngan Woo said the expo was the product of months of workshops and preparation. “The idea of this expo is to provide an opportunity for government services, community groups and organisations to be able to bridge that gap between them and the Pacific community in Melbourne,” she said. The expo, at Sunshine Polish Charity Association in Ardeer, will feature stalls from service providers such as the Department of Human Services, Brimbank council, Jesuit

social services, IPC Health, BaptistCare, immigration support and Noah’s Ark Australia, while local Polynesian businesses and food stalls will also be on hand. “It’s all about those groups showing the services they can offer,” Ms Tilialo-Ngan Woo said. “They can also learn about the needs of our community and how to improve their services. It will be great for local Polynesian people to have access to those services in one place, for themselves and their families, and then also for the wider community to have that access.” The event will run from 9.30am-2.30 pm on Thursday, June, 8 at 6 Helene Street, Ardeer.

Cr Melissa De Santis Coburn Ward

Our City has been growing rapidly for over 15 years, and our community is constantly changing.

At the February Ordinary Meeting of Council, I put forward a Notice of Motion to establish an advisory committee that would respond to the issue of family violence..

We are now more diverse, unique, and vibrant than ever, so it’s a great time for those who live, work, study, and visit our community to come together and develop a shared vision for the future of our City. Melton City 2036 – The City We Imagine is a shared vision that uses the ideas and words of community members to describe what they want the City of Melton to look like, feel like and offer its residents over the next 20 years. Last year, the community was invited to contribute their ideas to help develop a detailed picture of where they wanted the City to be in 2036. More than 2,000 people of different ages and backgrounds, completed surveys or attended faceto-face events, to share what they loved about the City of Melton, what they didn’t like, and what their hopes were for our City. To those of you who answered the call by sharing your dreams and aspirations, I say a heartfelt thank you. It is because of your willingness to express your ideas that Melton City 2036 – The City We Imagine has come to be, and we now have a much clearer picture of what you want our community will look like in the future.

...occurring within the City of Melton. It’s now my pleasure to report that the Preventing Violence Against Women Advisory Committee will be established shortly, a huge step towards positive social change. I’m thrilled by the support I’ve received from my fellow Councillors in realising this vision, and by the Council officers, especially Maurie Heaney, who worked to realise the establishment of this committee. To you all, I give you my warmest thanks. Recently, I had the pleasure of hearing Rowena Allen, Victorian Commission for Gender and Sexuality, and radio personality and local business woman, Michelle Sheppard, speak at Council’s IDAHOBIT celebration. It was a pleasure to see the number of community members that attended the official Rainbow Flag raising and cake cutting ceremony had increased, and hope to see these figures continue to grow in coming years. I sincerely believe in equality and acceptance for all, and events like this make me proud to be part of our diverse and inclusive community.

Of course, Melton City 2036 – The City We Imagine will require a whole of community approach to deliver. Residents, service providers, the private sector and all levels of government, need to work together to realise this wonderful vision for the future, and I for one look forward to seeing it come to fruition. Visit melton.vic.gov.au/meltoncity2036 for further information.

I was also moved to hear the stories of our returned servicemen and women at the Melton ANZAC dawn service, and was equally humbled to attend the Woodlea Walk of Honour launch. It was especially pleasing to see Chris Bracher from Woodlea present Carole Doyle, President of the Melton Partners of Veterans Association, with a cheque for the Young Diggers Dogs for Diggers program, which trains dogs for returned soldiers suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. For more information about the program visit youngdiggers.com.au/dogs

NEWS

MY PLACE Noelle Dickson’s life was forever changed after the murder of her daughter Sarah Cafferkey in 2012. She spoke to Esther Lauaki about the Bacchus Marsh community that rallied around her in her time of need. What’s your connection with Moorabool? My family goes way back to the 1800s when both my great-grandfathers arrived at Point Lonsdale by ship as English and Scottish immigrants. The boat in which they travelled on was called the Sacramento and held 250 passengers. Great-grandfather Hine settled in Rowsley and great-grandfather Dickson settled in Darley, both working on dairy farms and both raising their families in those areas. My grandfather A.W.T. Hine served in WWI and has a memorial tree in the Avenue of Honor. My mother and father both served in WWII, my mother as a cardiographer in the AAMWS and my father was a leading aircraft maintenance officer in the RAAF. After the war mum and dad married and settled in Bacchus Marsh and built our family home from the old Army huts in 1947.

occasional local you bump into for a chat. Maddingley Park is always a height of activity, whether it be tennis, netball, football, cricket or just a family day out in the park or residents walking their dogs. We always end up at Sarah’s memorial tree where Baileigh sits and waits for me to catch up so we can play stick. Here I feel peaceful and often sit and ponder what was and could have been.

(Shawn Smits)

What would people be surprised to know about you I don’t mind being on my own. I guess I have always been a private person, so to find myself in the limelight is quite new to me and often daunting. I mostly put up a brave front and appear quite strong but in reality it’s quite the opposite.

How long have you lived in the area? I have lived in Bacchus Marsh all my life. Tell me about your background? As a teenager, I loved playing tennis and netball and worked on weekends at Talbots and Birdies. In 1978 I started work in Melbourne at Melbourne and Metropolitan Board of Works where I travelled in each day by train. I worked there for 12 years until I went on maternity leave to give birth to a beautiful green-eyed daughter, named Sarah Louise. For the next 16 years I was a stay-at-home mum. During this time I studied to become a beautician and did the occasional work from home as well as working in a couple of local salons. In 2006 I went back to work at a local

accountants as a paraplanner and receptionist/ clerk where I still work today. In 2013 I married my boss Lawrence Seery. What are you passionate about? Since my daughter’s murder I have been busy campaigning for changes within our justice system as well as being instrumental in the changes that have occurred with the Adult Parole Board, Corrections Victoria, Legal Aid, Bail and Victims of Crime. My passion is to change laws to better protect our community and to improve how victims are treated in the criminal justice system.

What is the best thing about Moorabool? I find our community is very generous and compassionate. I will never forget how the community gathered together to show their support at Sarah’s funeral and Sarah’s walk which concluded at Maddingley Park where I planted a pink flowering plum tree in memory of Sarah.

What other hats do you wear in the community? Many forms of different shapes and sizes; gardener, interior designer, peacemaker, carer, listener, victims advocate, loving daughter, wife and of course nanny to Sarah’s beloved dog Baileigh who is spoilt rotten and fills a huge void in my heart and soul.

If you could change anything about the area, what would it be? I would love to see Sarah’s Space grow from a single referral support-based room to an entire youth hub that incorporates services, support and education to all adolescents and young adults. Our community could benefit by using the premises to support our youth and aged in sharing their life experiences towards a more compassionate community environment.

Where’s your favourite place to spend your time in the area? I love walking to Maddingley Park with Baileigh, where on the way I admire residents’ gardens and homes, the fresh air and the

Arts makes the scene The exhibition will include 650 paintings, watercolours, metal works and sculptures. A well-known artist will paint a portrait at the event to be auctioned later. Money raised from sales and tickets goes toward Rotary projects. “This is a much sought-after exhibition opportunity and an important fundraising activity for the Bacchus Marsh Rotary Club, enabling considerable support for many local and international projects,” Mr Shilton said. The art show opening will run from 7pm on Friday, June 9, with public viewing and sales until Monday, June 12.

More than 600 creations will fill the Bacchus Marsh public hall for Rotary’s upcoming art show. The art show, in its 47th year and the club’s major annual fundraiser, will be held during the Queen’s Birthday weekend. Rotary Bacchus Marsh chairman Peter Shilton said the event had developed a considerable following over the years. “It’s a lovely warm atmosphere on what might be a very cold weekend,” Mr Shilton said. “The exhibition attracts artists from all over Australia and is enthusiastically supported by local residents and visitors alike. “It’s the biggest social event in Bacchus Marsh – most artists come back year after year.”

During a period of growth in Melbourne’s west, developer Kataland’s visionary Underbank project, a 166-hectare community in Bacchus Marsh, has been well received in the local community. Kataland development manager Allan Carlsson says that since Underbank’s launch last June, about 95 per cent of the first two stage releases have sold, with stage 3a launched ahead of time to meet demand. Buyers from Bacchus Marsh and surrounding area have accounted for a third of sales to date, with Mr Carlsson saying the Kataland team is thrilled. “We’re absolutely honoured that so many locals have bought into the Underbank project,” he says. “It highlights that we’ve struck a chord with our offering – namely affordable homes nestled amid nature. “It’s because of this strong demand that we’re eager to deliver facilities right at the start of the project so that our first residents can enjoy Underbank as soon as they move in. “For instance, 50 per cent of Underbank will be parklands, creek corridors and reserves … we’re aiming to have a playground, walking tracks, exercise stations and barbecue areas ready for use later this year.” Mr Carlsson says people who prioritise living amid nature have been holding out for the next land release, River’s Edge, which is set to come out as early as next month. “We’re really excited about this new neighbourhood because it’s the only part of Underbank that will be on level land, close to the beautiful Werribee River,” he says. “River’s Edge is the premium part of the development, which is why we’re selling the land via an online registration of interest campaign to meet the expected strong demand.”

NEW HOMES AND LAND – Underbank

Kataland director Jason Yeap believes the project’s success is due to striking the perfect balance of proximity to Bacchus Marsh town centre and an affordable lifestyle amid nature. “Many developments are isolated from existing towns and take a cookie-cutter

approach,” he says. “When I first saw the Underbank site, I was struck by the rich landscape. “There’s a natural bowl formation with a valley surrounded by hills, mature trees, native shrubs and waterways.” Underbank will become home to about

43 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ MAY 30, 2017

SPORT State bid for Schwarze By Tara Murray Melton Hockey star Chloe Schwarze will again get to test her skills against the best in the state. For a fifth straight year, the Mustangs young gun has been selected in a North West Tigers team for the Junior State Championships. This year’s championships will be the second time she’s been in the under-15 team, after three years playing in the under-13 team. She’s been an integral part of the Tigers team each year and been among the goal scores in each championships. “It feels good and I’m glad I got into the team again,” Schwarze said. “It gets harder every year. Different people hear about it and come and trial. “There’s players you don’t know. You have to trial for two hours and then wait a week to find out whether you’ve got in.” After winning silver last year, Schwarze is hoping they can go one step further this year. She said she thought they had a team that could win, with most of the team having played together before. Schwarze, who plays centre forward, wing and centre half, said she was hoping to be selected in the Victorian team. “I tried out last season but I missed out,” she said. “This year I think I definitely have a better chance. I have more confidence in myself.” On top of her representative duties, Schwarze has been combining playing senior and age group hockey for the Mustangs. Last year she was the club’s leading goalscorer in both her under-14 team and in the Mustangs Vic League sides. She’s received the club’s most outstanding junior trophy for the past two years. Schwarze is now one of the leaders of the Mustangs senior side. “I felt intimated when I first started,” she said. “I didn’t have the same ability as them. “Being the leading goalscorer last season was good. I was really glad I got that. “Most people in the team are young this year. They look up to me and my sister [Amy] as they aren’t used to this level.” If not already busy enough with playing juniors and seniors, Schwarze co-coaches the Mustangs under-10 mixed team. Mustangs’ Kellie McLaren said Schwarze showed commitment and sportsmanship beyond her years. “She has committed to learning and improving her umpiring capabilities and can be counted on to umpire our juniors,” she said. “Her bubbly personality certainly is encouraging many youngsters to continue further into ongoing hockey programs. “Chloe is very much a favourite of our youngest juniors, always taking the time to encourage and mentor, or just a friendly chat.”

Burnside Heights has had another tough encounter in Essendon District Football League division 2. Burnside Heights was on the back foot early against Moonee Valley as the Magpies amassed 15 scoring shots in the first quarter. But that was just the start for the Magpies, who kicked at least five goals in every quarter in their 24.11 (155)-8.12 (60) win. Josh Covelli kicked four goals for the Bears against his old side.

Hockey

The Caroline Springs women’s sides both had big wins at the weekend. In pennant F grade, Caroline Springs defeated TEM 7-0. Holly Azzopardi and Laura Brown scored two goals each, while Megan Shadbolt, Narelle Shadbolt and Aimee Jungfer also found the back of the net. In women’s metro B west, Caroline Springs defeated Essendon 8-0. Brittany Webster scored a hat-trick in the win. The men’s pennant G grade side lost 6-1 to Old Carey. In the under-10s, Springers Black defeated Springers Blue 3-0. Rory McMillan scored twice, while Liam McMillan scored the other goal.

Rugby union

Melton’s Greg Foster, Blake Hussey, Benediet Paulo and Andrew Seve have been named in the Victorian Country team that will play a series of matches throughout the year. The first of those matches is on June 10, when the team will play Power House in an exhibition match at Albert Park.

WRFL

Caroline Springs put in a spirited performance against Sunshine, but it wasn’t enough to break the Springers’ duck in division 1. The Lakers led at quarter-time before being outscored in the next three quarters, losing 20.21 (141)-13.2 (80). Jason Degabriele kicked four goals for the Lakers.

Soccer

Melton Phoenix suffered a 4-1 loss to Truganina Hornets in FFV state league 4 west. The Hornets scored all their goals in the first half. In state league 5 west, Spring Hills had a 2-0 win against University of Melbourne.

Darley ignores the Fev factor to storm over Melton Darley made a big statement against Melton South in its Ballarat Football League clash on Saturday. Undefeated, and having already knocked off reigning premiers Bacchus Marsh, the Devils took things to the next level against the Panthers. With former Carlton teammates Heath Scotland and Brendan Fevola going head-to-head on the field and in the coaches box, it was the midfielder who came out on top. The Devils kicked the first six goals of the game and with a lead of 40-1 at quarter-time looked on track for a good day. No one could have expected the second quarter, with the Devils kicking 12 goals to the Panthers two, to lead by a massive 100 points at 44 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ MAY 30, 2017

the main break. The lead was extended to 125 points at the last change as the Devils stamped home the advantage. The Panthers won the final quarter once the heat had gone out of the game, but it was a massively disappointing day for them. The Devils won 27.14 (176)-7.12 (54). The Graham brothers put on a show in front of goal; Chris kicking five goals and Brian kicking four. Five other players kicked multiple goals. Jackson Carrick was named best on ground, and Tom Evans and Abraham Cameron also had good games. For the Panthers it was hard to find a winner. Mark Lynch was named their best on a dark day.

Fevola kicked two goals. The loss is the Panthers’ second in a row after losing to Bacchus Marsh last week. Bacchus Marsh continues to build with a strong win against Melton. The Cobras started the better of the two sides and never let the Bloods back into the game. The Cobras won the first three quarters to lead by 62 points at the last break. The Bloods outscored the Cobras in the final quarter but it was little consolation and the Cobras won 14.15 (99)-6.12 (48). Hamish Coulton kicked four goals for the Cobras, and in a pleasing sign they won easily with star forward Jarrah Maksymow kicking just one goal. Jackson Bolton was best on ground, while

Tyson Shea and Scott Sherlock were just as busy. For the Bloods, Brock McGregor kicked two goals in his first game for the season. Ryan Walker was the Bloods’ best along with Ben Archard and Lachlan Walker. Melton has just one win from its first six games and sits ninth. They have a bye this week. In other results, Ballarat defeated Sebastopol, Lake Wendouree was too good for Sunbury Lions and East Point defeated North Ballarat City. In the A-grade netball, Melton South got the win against Darley, while Bacchus Marsh was too strong for Melton. Tara Murray

Diggers Rest cranks it up a notch after rare scare A rare loss to Romsey three rounds ago was the catalyst for a reality check for Diggers Rest in the Riddell District Football League. The reigning premiers haven’t lost many games the past few years, so the loss and the nature of it, left a bitter feeling for the Burras players. Burras’ coach Shaun Sims said it was one of the worst games they had played for a long time and the Redbacks clearly outworked them. “We had a pretty good discussion after that game,” he said. “We adjusted some things which we hadn’t been doing compared to last year. We needed to use the ball better. “The Romsey game we had 60 handball receives and the last two weeks we’ve had 150. Our overall effort is improving.”

Having addressed the concerns, the Burras regrouped last week with a solid win against Rockbank. On Saturday, the Burras put together their most complete performance of the season against Melton Centrals. The Burras won every quarter in the 18.13 (121)-4.2 (26) win. Sims said that was as close as they had been all season to putting together four good quarters. Lachie Langford kicked four goals and Mick Kilty, Josh Wallace and Matthew Krul all kicked multiple goals. Krul was named best on ground ahead of Kilty and Cameron McCabe. Sims said the forward line was starting to click and they were finding different avenues to goal.

“We lost the majority of our forward line from last year,” he said. “Chris Lawton, Matthew Krul, Mick Kilty and Lachie are all players that can play in different positions. “We had another player in Jordan Aitken make his debut and we think he’ll fit into that forward line. “There’s a good mixture of players and we want an even spread of goalkickers. It’ll take to the end of the year to get that mix right.” The Burras’ next opponent is Lancefield, which is coming off its first win of the season. It’s the third in a four-game period which the Burras pencilled in as ‘must-wins’ after losing to Romsey. “It’s about how we play and how we share the ball,” he said.

Centrals close the gap By Tara Murray Melton Centrals’ tough start to the season has continued in AFL Goldfields Women’s Football League. Centrals have lost their first three games of the inaugural season and are struggling to match it with some of the more experienced and bigger sides. The club has had a women’s side for a number of years, but coach Janelle Martin said this season had been a big reality check for the players. Last season, Centrals finished runners-up in the Victorian Women’s Football League’s division 4 competition.

‘‘

We haven’t played teams like that before

’’

- Janelle Martin

“We’ve gone from a development league into a division 1 competition,” Martin said. “The girls are trying so hard, but it’s hard playing against sides like North Geelong Magpies, who have a lot of VFL players. “We haven’t played against teams like that before.” Not making it any easier for Centrals has been the rate of change around the club. At least half the side is new, with many of those new to football, while several players had come out of retirement. And they’re playing stocks have also been dealt blows through five season-ending injuries. Martin said playing against experienced players had been tough for the new arrivals and they were hoping to recruit some experienced players. “We’ve only scored three points this season so far,” she said. “It’s a good experience for the girls to play against experienced players, but it doesn’t do their confidence any good.” On Saturday, they played early premiership favourite North Geelong for the second time this season. The two teams played each other in the second round of grading. North Geelong won the first game 150-0. It was again a one-sided game on Saturday, but Centrals can take some positives out of the match, it considerably reduced the margin, with North Geelong winning 12.15 (87)-0.1 (1). After three rounds, North Geelong is yet to concede a goal. “We played really well and our pressure was unbelievable,” Martin said. “We didn’t lose by 150 points this time – so it’s a step forward. “A couple of the new players enjoyed themselves, as well.” Martin said Rachel Jackson, in her first season, had been a standout so far. In division 2, Bacchus Marsh got its first win of the season, defeating Gisborne. The Cobras kept the Bulldogs goalless for the first three quarters in the 5.6 (36)-2.7 (19) win.

Melton Centrals’ Kareena Jacobsen-Logan gets a kick away North Geelong. (Shawn Smits)

Madalyn Clarke and Brittany McIntyre kicked two goals each for the Cobras. Elise Korteman, Abbey Bertram and Zhoe Clarke were named the Cobras’ best. In the Riddell youth girls competition,

Centrals had a 23-point win against Darley to keep their unbeaten start to the season. Emmerson Hitch was best on ground for a fourth straight week. Bacchus Marsh lost to Gisborne Blue.

“We’ve still got a lot of work to do. We’ve started to do the right things and, most importantly, the boys are enjoying playing football more.” For Centrals, it was all single goalkickers. Michael Egan was named their best. The loss is Centrals’ second in a row. In other games, Rockbank was the latest team to feel the heat from ladder leaders Macedon. The Cats started well, keeping the Rams scoreless in the first quarter and continued on their way, winning 17.24 (126)-5.7 (37). Leigh Sobotnicki and Ricky Cameron kicked two goals each for the Rams. Sunbury Kangaroos, Romsey, Riddell and Lancefield were the other winners. Tara Murray

Burras face testing times Diggers Rest will get a clearer indication of where it sits among Riddell District Netball League contenders in the next few weeks. The Burras started the season well when playing lower-placed sides, but have had more testing matches in recent weeks. After falling to the undefeated Romsey side a couple of weeks ago, the Burras faced another finals hopeful in Melton Centrals on Saturday. They went down 60-51, with an 18 to eight-goal second quarter proving to be the difference. Burras playing coach Amy Carroll scored 29 goals in the loss, with Shelby Strong, Toni Lind and Stephanie Barnes named their best. For Centrals, captain Jessica May was best on court and Rita White-Kay scored 39 goals. Speaking before the match, Carroll said she was maintaining a positive outlook. “We played a really strong team in Romsey and it hit us hard, but it was good to have a match like that,” she said. “We need to play against teams like that to test where we are at. “They have an incredible team and every single player is talented. We won the second half, which showed we can match it with them.” Carroll said that with so many new faces in the side, the Burras were still finding their way and working out what combinations worked best. She said getting off to better starts in games and working on the side’s shooting combinations were two areas in which a lot of improvement was still to come. She said there had been challenges in having so many good players. “It can be hard as a coach as there’s some really good players,” she said. “It’s a good problem to have, though. “I want to give all the girls a good chance to play together – but they understand we want to win. “The likes of Natasha Chokljat and Toni Lind have been incredible additions.” The Burras’ task doesn’t get any easier – they will face Lancefield twice in a row, either side of the bye. The Tigers have had just a single loss in the season so far, a one-goal defeat at the hands of Romsey. In other results, Lancefield defeated Sunbury Kangaroos, Macedon was too strong for Rockbank, Romsey defeated Rupertswood and Riddell beat Woodend Hesket. BMX kid is riding high

Thoroughbred hopes undone

By Tara Murray Zachary Dalli has always been right at home on a bike. At just two, he was so confident on two wheels his training wheels were taken off his bike. When he was five, an ad for a BMX club ad at a local shopping centre piqued his interest. by the time he was six he qualified for his first BMX national championships. Last month, the now eight-year-old, competed in his third straight nationals, this time in Brisbane. Competing in the nine-year-old boys’ competition, Dalli finished seventh out of 74 competitors, earning himself an A-plate for making the final. Going into the nationals, Dalli had set himself a goal of making the top eight. “When I finished the semi-final, I had a huge smile on my face,” he said. “It was pretty good to get an A-plate.” The result means Dalli qualified to represent Australia at the World Championships in the US in July. However, his father, Simon, said they would likely skip the world titles and hope for another opportunity. Simon said Dalli, who rides at Geelong BMX club, would continue to work hard with his coach James Lautier, a rider in his own right, to continue to improve. Dalli, who rides for PK Racing, is already looking to next year. “I want to get picked in the Victorian team again,” he said.. While he has aims of making the Olympics down the track,Dalli is happy to continue competing in the sport he loves. “I like going fast and going over jumps.”

Zachary Dalli made the finals of the national BMX championships and qualified for the world titles.

Melton Thoroughbreds have come up short against Blackburn Vikings in Big V men’s division 1 basketball. Coming off their first win of the season, the Thoroughbreds were hoping to build some momentum. Instead they were left to rue two poor quarters that cost them a 93-73 loss. A slow start proved costly for the undermanned Thoroughbreds, who trailed by 14 points at quarter-time. They worked back into the game in the middle two quarters to trail by just six points at the final break. The comeback was halted when the Vikings turned up the tempo in the last quarter to nail a 20-point win. Ivan Harris led the way for the Thoroughbreds with 25 points as four of the five starters scored double figures. The Thoroughbreds remain bottom of the Terrill division ladder, three games behind the sides in fifth and sixth. The Thoroughbreds youth league division 2 side had a 93-76 win against Chelsea Gulls. The Thoroughbreds set up the win in the first half by outscoring the Gulls 48-30. It was a real team effort from the Thoroughbreds, with 10 players playing at least 10 minutes each. Every player who took to the court got on the scoreboard, with Broden Collins top-scoring with 18 points. The Thoroughbreds are eighth on the ladder. Tara Murray
