Brian Woodstock’s passion for Australian garlic started while trying to impress his girlfriend, Helen, over a romantic dinner. He had a great piece of whiting, but needed some garlic for seasoning. “I went to the cupboard and my garlic was all dried up,” Mr Woodstock recalled. “I went to the supermarket, but couldn’t find good Australian garlic. “By the time I got back home to dinner, the fish was ruined, but thankfully I still had Helen.” Five years ago, Mr Woodstock and Helen (pictured) moved to Gordon, planted their first garlic bulb a year later, and their business, Harmony Garlic, has blossomed since. The couple now plant more than 80,000 bulbs each year, and are urging everyone to support the Australian garlic industry. “Good quality garlic may cost a little bit more, but you’ll use less compared with imports,” Mr Woodstock said. “And the big problem with imported garlic is that it sits in shipping containers for several weeks. “And god knows what it’s sprayed in and grown in.” Garlic growers celebrated the opening of Victoria’s 2017 season this month, as demand for good quality Australian garlic continues to grow. Tackle gangs, lawyer calls By Sumeyya Ilanbey People have buried their heads in the sand under the guise of political correctness, rather than tackling the youth gang crisis gripping the state, a Melton-based lawyer has claimed. Hayden Legro is calling for a youth summit in Melbourne’s west, bringing to the table local, state and federal government representatives, welfare workers, immigration officials, police, youth workers and community leaders. The summit must be convened in the western suburbs and focus on the particular issues facing young people in this region, Mr Legro told Star Weekly.
He stressed the urgency of such a move after reports a group of about 30 teenagers gatecrashed a recent Caroline Springs festival and stole mobile phones. “The government, sadly, simply wants to build more prisons to deal with the problem,” Mr Legro said. “This seems a defeatist and a political response to a much deeper issue. “A gathering of key stakeholders … is required to focus on this issue in a comprehensive, not a piecemeal, way.” Mr Legro said he is concerned that, if underlying issues aren’t dealt with, there could be serious consequences in the near future, including vigilante groups taking the law into
their own hands, or a backlash against ethnic minorities. In the 12 months to September 2016, there were 336 crimes involving young people reported in Melton – 9.3 per cent of overall offences. While this was a slight increase from the year before (244), it was a decline from 2014, Crime Statistics Agency data shows. Melton council community services general manager Maurie Heaney said a youth summit is something the council would support. He said the council ran a number of programs and support services for young people, including the Reconnect program, which helps young people at risk of homelessness, and
the youth mentoring program, which links “disconnected” youth with an adult mentor. “The youth services team also participates in a wide range of community events, including Djerriwarrh festival, Summersault, and MyCity, My Say listening posts,” he said. Meanwhile federal Liberal MP Jason Wood has called for anti-gang squads to be permanently located in Melbourne’s west and south-east. The squads would be made up of Victoria Police and Australian Federal Police officers, immigration officials, and Sudanese and Islander youth workers. “This is just going to get worse – early intervention is key,” Mr Wood said.

Melton suburbs get thumbs up Five thousand Melton addresses will be changed and 11 new suburbs established following state government approval of the new suburbs’ boundaries and names. Most of the new suburbs – Harkness, Weir Views, Cobblebank, Strathtulloh, Thornhill Park, Grangefields, Bonnie Brook, Aintree, Fieldstone, Fraser and Deanside – will be established in the growth corridor between the Melton township and the eastern corridor, while the boundaries of some existing suburbs will be amended.
Melton South, Melton West, Mount Cottrell, Plumpton, Rockbank and Toolern Vale will be reduced in size, while Truganina will be increased. The changes are necessary to ensure population growth doesn’t push suburb densities beyond 20,000 residents. Melton mayor Sophie Ramsey said the 11 new suburbs were great news for the municipality. “Council now has the opportunity to establish great community hubs that people aspire to live in and foster a real sense of belonging across the city,” Cr Ramsey said.
“Residents can rest assured that we will be in touch to help guide them through the transition from old suburb to new and work towards alleviating any concerns they may have during the change-over period.” The state government’s Office of Geographic Names approved the new suburbs earlier this month, publishing suburb boundaries in the Victorian Government Gazette on Thursday, February 9. Changes are expected to come into effect about the middle of this year. The new suburb names were suggested by the suburb naming advisory committee,
Gold is the colour of Blackwood’s prize Founded in 1855 during the gold rush, Blackwood is steeped in the history of one of the largest voluntary migrations of people worldwide ever recorded. So what better place to host the Australian Goldpanning Championships than this tiny town, which was known as Mt Blackwood until 1921? Hundreds of people are expected to flock to Blackwood this weekend to try their hand at gold panning as part of the annual competition. Victorian Gold Panning Association’s Marcus Binks said people of any age and ability could give it a go. “There are a lot of traditions associated with gold panning,” Mr Binks said. “Blackwood was built on gold – so we’re just trying to keep that history, maintain that history and provide an avenue for young ones to learn gold panning.” The 15 competitors in each heat are required to pan all the gold from their buckets. They’re judged on their ability to get all the gold in the pan, and for each nugget missed, a three-minute penalty is added to their time. Mr Binks said while competitors aren’t allowed to keep the gold they ‘find’, each person does receive a gold token. The championships start at 10am on Saturday, February 25, at the Blackwood Cricket Ground, Recreation Reserve Road. Entry is $5 for children under 12 and $10 for adults. Details: 9598 9859 or search Victorian Goldpanning Association on Facebook.

Tell one and all, code says Councillors in Moorabool shire will have to tell all their colleagues if they have a dispute with another councillor. At a special meeting earlier this month, councillors were required to sign the local government councillor code of conduct. An amendment to the code requires that all councillors, as well as the mayor and chief executive, must be notified in the instance of a dispute. The amendment and the code of conduct were passed unanimously by councillors. Moorabool deputy mayor Tonia Dudzik said she supports the change as it adds another level of openness to council relationships. “I think it’s a good thing for transparency of the council,” Cr Dudzik said. First-term East Moorabool councillor Jarrod Bingham put forward two further amendments to the code of conduct, however both were voted down. The first sought to make unauthorised recordings of fellow councillors a breach, while the second sought to stop councillors using pseudonyms to disguise themselves on social media. Cr Bingham and fellow East Moorabool councillor John Keogh were the only two to support the amendments. Cr Bingham questioned why councillors refused to accept amendments that were designed to improve transparency. Moorabool mayor Dave Edwards and former mayor Paul Tatchell were absent from the meeting.

Punched by passing rider By Sumeyya Ilanbey

Dirt bike bites the tracks
(Shawn Smits)
A 14-year-old boy was viciously punched twice in the face by a passing dirtbike rider as he attempted to cross a road in Melton West last week. Logan (pictured) remembers the impact of the punch and striking his head on the ground, but has no recollection of anything until he woke in hospital hours later. “I don’t remember how I came home, but I got home and I [apparently] slept for a little bit,” Logan says. “It was getting dark and I started panicking, so I went over to my neighbour’s house – she said I was screaming and hysterical – and I told her what I could comprehend at that point. “She called the police, they asked me a few questions, then I fell to the floor and hit my head again … the next thing I remember is waking up at hospital.” Logan told police he was going to cross West Melton Drive, near the James Cook Drive intersection, about 7pm on February 14 when he saw two motorbikes – a stunt bike and a dirt bike – driving towards him. He said he stepped back onto the nature strip to avoid them. The driver of the stunt bike swerved around him but the dirt bike rider stopped and asked him what he thought he was doing. Logan said the rider punched him to the ground, then picked him up and punched him a second time. Both riders fled when they noticed a car coming. Logan’s mum Shannon Galloway, who was at a concert at the time of the assault, says she wants the bike riders brought to justice. “Obviously, Logan shouldn’t have been out – we told him not to go out – but it wasn’t late, he wasn’t doing anything particularly wrong, and he certainly didn’t deserve what happened to
him,” she says. Logan was required to stay in hospital overnight and still has short term memory loss. Police are searching for a male, described as being aged in his mid-30s, tall, with a solid build and facial hair. He was wearing a white and blue coloured
Fox helmet and fluro orange goggles and was riding a black and yellow dirt bike. The second rider was riding a ‘naked’ stunt bike, similar to a Pee Wee 50. He has been described as aged in his 20s, with a thin build. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
A man had a close shave with a high-speed train near Ballan last month. The man was among a group of riders and was attempting to get his dirt bike across the tracks as a train approached travelling at 160 km/h. Train diver Colin Sharp said the man jumped off the tracks with a split second to spare, and possibly “scraped the side of his boots” on the carriage. “As I came around the corner, I was doing right on 160 km/h … I thought I had him. His bike was in tiny bits and pieces – there was nothing left of it. I couldn’t believe how a bike could disintegrate like that.” Mr Sharp said when the rider saw the train, he tried to get the bike off the tracks, but “got some sense and decided to get himself off”, leaving the bike. Mr Sharp said there was a marked crossing just 50 metres away. V/Line released dash cam footage of the incident as a warning against trespassing on train tracks. Sumeyya Ilanbey

Rubbish anger mounts By Sumeyya Ilanbey Old mattresses lying in the middle of the embankment, household rubbish strewn on the ground, unwanted furniture left upturned – these are the eyesores greeting visitors to Melton Reservoir. The condition of the once-vibrant reservoir has become so bad in recent years, Melton residents say, they’re avoiding the area. One woman, who wanted to remain anonymous, told Star Weekly the area could be developed and landscaped, but neither Melton council nor Southern Rural Water was claiming responsibility. “It’s such a pity because it can be turned into a picnic area rather than let it get degraded,” she said. “We’ve got old trees and wildlife there … but it’s not being used properly. If left in this condition, it will deteriorate further and further. It needs to be looked into.” Melton council planning and development manager Luke Shannon said most of the reservoir was owned and managed by Southern Rural Water. He said council was responsible for a section along Clarkes Road and patrolled that area weekly. “Littering and dumping on the urban fringe is a continual challenge for local government,” Mr Shannon said. “We urge residents, if they witness acts of littering or dumping, to complete a litter report [available from our website]. These reports can be completed confidentially. “All reports are investigated and action taken against identified offenders.” Mr Shannon said council officers regularly patrolled rural roads and removed dumped rubbish.

Foreign-owned houses sold off A Rockbank house and one in Kurunjang, valued at $6 million and $140,000 respectively, bought by an Indian investor and a German investor, will be sold as part of the federal government’s crackdown on foreign investment law breaches. The two properties are among 15 that will go under the hammer after it was revealed foreign nationals bought properties without Foreign Investment Review Board approval, and in some cases had multiple established properties in breach of the rules. The total number of forced sales since the crackdown started two years ago is 61, with a combined value of $107 million, federal Treasurer Scott Morrison announced last week. The 61 properties also included a Brookfield house valued at $2 million and a Melton West house, both bought by Chinese nationals. The government has been under increasing pressure to get tough on foreign-ownership rules amid concerns foreign buyers are fuelling Australia’s property boom. An additional 36 foreign investors, who came forward during the amnesty period between May 2, 2015, and November 30, 2015, were given a year to sell their properties. Mr Morrison said the Australian Taxation Office identified more than 570 overseas buyers who have breached the foreign-ownership rules. Sumeyya Ilanbey

Life’s journeys inspire Everyone has a story to tell … but most go unheard. Malaika Gilani wants to highlight the many untold stories that can inspire people on their own journeys through life. When the 16-year-old Caroline Springs teen (pictured) was assigned a peer counselling role four years ago, she at first felt burdened … not by the struggles her classmates were facing, but by the sheer fact she couldn’t help. “So I started writing poetry,” Malaika says. “I used poetry to express my feelings. “And I now want people reading the poems to know that someone else is going through
exactly what you are … you’re not alone.” The aspiring medic has published her first book, Untold Journeys – a collection spanning four years – which will be launched this weekend. Flanders tribute ‘grows’ A plan to flank the Bacchus Marsh Avenue of Honour with thousands of red poppies has kept locals busy lately. Members of the Bacchus Marsh RSL Ladies Auxiliary have been clacking their knitting needles and crochet hooks to craft some 3000 fabric poppies in the bright red shade of the flowers from the French fields of Flanders – the western front of WWI. The poppies were then woven into 300 wreaths, which will be laid against each tree as part of the honour avenue’s centenary celebrations next year. A commemorative service is planned for August 11 next year, when a bugle will be sounded to mark the 100th anniversary of the
planting of the famous boulevard of Canadian elm trees, as it sounded when they were planted. Bacchus Marsh Great War Centenary committee member Tonia Dudzik and the Bacchus Marsh RSL Ladies Auxiliary president Bev Kummerlowe thanked the community’s many craftspeople for their efforts in “growing” the poppies for the wreaths. “The 300 wreaths will be a magnificent tribute to the soldiers from the Bacchus Marsh District who served in World War I,” Ms Dudzik said. What’s your favourite thing about living in Moorabool? It’s a little bit more rural. Melton was quite small when I arrived. Now it’s a lot more populated. Bacchus Marsh is getting more urban, but 13 years ago it was quite ‘countryfied’. Bacchus Marsh has a very local feel. What would you change about the area if you could? [Road works to reduce] traffic congestion. I’m not far from the main street, but school times are just horrendous. And we also need to have more public transport options. Where’s your favourite place to hang out in Moorabool? Just the local coffee shops. My favourite one’s Baby Black probably; it’s a bit eclectic, has good food and good music. Why do you think photography clubs are important in small towns? I think all small communities need groups for like-minded people. Photography is easy to get involved in – most people have phones and cameras – and clubs are a good way of getting together, meeting people.

What can people expect from the Bacchus Marsh and District Photography Club? We have competitions between ourselves
that are judged by members and professional photographers as a means of improving and upskilling the things we do. We have workshops, social evenings and outings where we might go to a national park or market. What’s the secret to a good photo? Patience. Spend a bit of time on getting the perfect shot; don’t rush. Where’s your favourite place to photograph? I personally like old buildings and structures. My favourite old structure would be the bridge
in Deep Creek, just before Anthonys Cutting. The lighting’s nice and it photographs especially well in the early morning or evenings. There are a lot of great places around Moorabool for landscape, architecture, urban and wildlife photos. Most people’s photography interests can easily be catered for in the shire. The Bacchus Marsh and District Photography Club meets 7.30pm on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month at the Darley Neighbourhood House, 33 Jonathan Drive. cr sophie ramsey mayor’s message
Cr Ken Hardy Coburn Ward
Last week was extremely exciting for the City, with the start on construction of a new, $21 million health hub on Barries Road, Melton.
It’s a pleasure to have this opportunity to speak directly with you, the residents of Coburn Ward and thank you for electing me as your Ward Councillor, last October.
The hub brings together Djerriwarrh Health Services, Melbourne Health-Midwest Area Mental Health Service, MacKillop Family Services, cohealth and Odyssey House Victoria, under an innovative model that delivers quality and timely health services under one roof. The wellbeing of our community is something that’s very close to my heart. I’ve advocated tirelessly for over 10 years with the single vision that our residents need and deserve easier access to vital health and family services. To see this shared vision of an integrated health ´ £µ¶§ ¤ª«·¸¸¹¤º § ² ¤·¤£ ·¸¶¡¹»¤¶´¤·¤¼£ ·²¤§ ² ¤¡£½ »¤·«¼¤¾¤·²¤ £·¡ ©½¸¤¡ ¤ µ £¹ « ¤¿¢ ¤ has worked towards this goal over the years. The facility is expected to open in April 2018. I’m also pleased to advise that we received a number for submissions from the community ·º ½¡¤¿¢·¡¤¡¢ ¹¤© ¸¡¤À ½«§¶¸Á´¤Â£¶ £¶¡¶ ´¤´¢ ½¸¼¤º ¤ µ £¤¡¢ ¤« ᤪ«·«§¶·¸¤¹ ·£»¤·¡¤¡¢ ¤Â£ Ä budget engagement sessions held in early February. These ideas will be considered when Councillors deliberate the 2017/2018 budget later this week. The draft budget will be presented to Council in April, and made available for public comment. The formal Section 223 Committee submission process will take place in May. Finally, I’d like to encourage everyone to participate in Relay For Life, which is taking part this Saturday 25 February at Tabcorp Park. The Relay raises vital funds for the Cancer Council’s research, prevention and support services, and is a chance to recognise and celebrate local cancer survivors, patients and their carers; to honour loved ones lost to cancer and to raise money. For more information, visit relayforlife.org.au Please don’t hesitate to contact me with any ideas or issues on: Phone: 0412 584 067 Email: sophie.ramsey@melton.vic.gov.au
My election campaign focussed on several key issues that I committed to which would become priorities once elected to Council; in particular, advocating for the establishment of a public-private hospital in Melton, and to reinstate a TAFE facility within our municipality. It’s my pleasure now to report back on these issues, and assure the community that I am continuing to campaign for this vital infrastructure.
A Proud Community Growing Together 12 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ FEBRUARY 21, 2017
I have long been a strong advocate that the residents of Melton not only need, but deserve a hospital that meets the health needs of our growing community. As such, through my role as Councillor I have been initiating high level discussions with developers and State Government, and encouraging them to invest in the delivery of a public-private hospital in our great, and highly deserving, community. With reference to returning TAFE and tertiary facilities to the City of Melton, I’m happy to report that I have been in discussion with key tertiary institutions to explore and outline opportunities for providing TAFE services in our City. I plan to continue to advocate on behalf of our residents until Melton has a public-private hospital and TAFE facility giving our community access to affordable TAFE and tertiary education. A public-private hospital and TAFE would be great assets for the City of Melton, not only in their own right, but as catalysts for employment and economic growth, the keys to creating a ´¡£ « »¤Â£ ´Â £ ½´¤§ ²²½«¶¡¹¤¶«¤¿¢¶§¢¤¿ ¤§·«¤·¸¸¤Ç ½£¶´¢È I need your help to deliver this infrastructure and jobs for Melton. Two million litres of water flooded Bacchus Marsh Golf Course and three nearby houses on Sunday after a crack in the service basin in Swans Rd, Darley gave way. Volunteers and staff were still mopping up on Monday afternoon.
Doctors have boycotted day surgery at the Bacchus Marsh and Melton Memorial Hospital in the wake of the $65 one-off fee fracas. The boycott, enforced when the $65 fee was charged in January, is expected to add three months to the day-surgery list.
The failure of Moorabool mayor Marg Card to nominate was the biggest surprise in the lead-up to the March 16 election. Cr Card decided not to stand for a second term after seeing “the strong field of candidates for the Woodlands Riding.
A thirty-six-year-old Ballan man was charged with 16 offences after he was arrested while allegedly taking photos of children on the playground at a Melton primary school. Police carried out bike patrols of the area and made the arrest after children noticed a man taking photos from a car in a nearby carpark two days earlier.

Market movement moving up Responding to enthusiastic calls for fresh, locally-grown produce and artisanal goodies, the monthly Eynesbury market is going gangbusters. More than 60 stallholders are expected at the next market on February 26, says market manager Felicity Ashman, a member of Friends of Eynesbury Inc, the backing behind the market. “We began with weekly markets, but we now know what works best for everyone is running the market once a month,” Felicity says. “It’s all about meeting the needs of our wonderful local producers and artisans, as well as our community, so fine-tuning is always in the works. “But what is a constant is the amazing produce we get – much of it organic – from our local farmers, and the quality of homemade and handmade goodies our stallholders bring to market. “Expect to find artisan products such as jewellery and glass, as well as breads, balsamics, olives, honey, preserves, pickles, eggs, charcuterie and fruit and veg galore … even healthy dog treats,” Felicity says. “Farmers, producers and makers have an ideal platform to sell directly to the lucky public.” Felicity says the market isn’t a profit-making enterprise. “Eynesbury market is not a business, it’s a movement. Every dollar is reinvested to create a great experience for all visitors and stallholders. “The market is the inspiration of people who just want to see an increase in local food supply, stimulate local economies and create opportunities for small-scale businesses connected with our farming and artisanal heritage.” A food truck festival, vintage stalls, live entertainment, Kids Thyme, as well as cooking demos, add a buzz to the market, which is set under shady trees, and the perfect place for a picnic. Felicity says there’s a real passion to grow the market into a western suburbs hub of fresh, innovative produce. And, she says, the committee needs new members to help drive its successes further – the first AGM is on March 1. Eynesbury market, 487 Eynesbury Road, Eynesbury. Fourth Sunday of the month, 9am-3pm. This well-maintained house on a generous block is ready for its family to move in. Its large down-lit front porch is a welcoming feature and creates a distinctive facade. The main bedroom, with three large windows, overlooks the quiet street. There’s a powder room here, a walk-through wardobe and en suite. Three other bedrooms all have walk-in wardrobes. A study is next to the main bedroom en route to a tri-living zone, incorporating the lounge room and an inviting meals/living area, with beautiful timber-framed glass sliding doors and feature lighting. There’s great storage in the kitchen, a 900mm stainless-steel oven and detachable flick-switch tap. A separate retreat offers a quiet place to read. The main bathroom has a bath and separate shower. A landscaped backyard, remote-controlled garage, ducted heating, evaporative cooling and alarm are features.

A bright future awaits the right family for this fantastic house. Oversized, high-gloss tiling runs throughout the bright, sunny kitchen (which has a 900mm stainless-steel oven with feature rangehood) into the dining and living areas. This is an easy-living place with plenty of space for an active family. A dedicated study neighbours the main bedroom at the front of the house, where the huge walk-in wardrobe is concealed by an island wall. The en suite is equally large, and well appointed. There’s a large theatre room between here and the other three bedrooms, which are wrapped around the fully tiled main bathroom, with its shower and separate bath. A large laundry is also here. Alfresco dining is the purview of the covered patio off the kitchen-dining zone. A double lock-up garage concludes the built footprint – it can be accessed internally or from the backyard.
With the Melton Botanic Gardens at the end of the street, many family walks will be enjoyed by the new owners of this great package. The kitchen, with stainless-steel oven, gas cooktop and rangehood, has been styled with dark wood laminate, creating an urban-Scandinavian mood that is open and relaxed, as is the living/dining area. Large windows let plenty of light in to all three bedrooms, main with en suite. Extras such as stone feature tiles and over-sized high-glass tiling in the main bathroom follow through with the colour story seen in the kitchen. This house has a great feel and is close to schools and shops and there is easy access to the Western Freeway.

Strong enough to tackle a house, termites need a professional’s touch
(iStock)
You may not be the only ones sitting down to a scrumptious meal at your place … lurking out of sight, thousands of white ants may also be munching away. Many Australian home owners unknowingly invite termites to eat away their very foundations, leaving them with thousands of dollars in damage bills. Archicentre director Robert Caulfield said termites are silent workers and the damage they can cause sometimes isn’t noticed until it’s too late. “Sometimes the damage isn’t revealed until the head of a vacuum hits the skirting board and the board crumbles to dust,” Mr Caulfield said. Termite inspectors and architects have reported cases of dangerous structural damage caused by termites, and it’s typically in warm, wet weather that swarms of young termites start looking for new spots to set up colonies. To reduce the likelihood of attracting termites, home owners should: • Remove stagnant sub-floor spaces by improving sub-floor ventilation, allowing air to move freely; • Remove timber off-cuts around the house; • Relocate firewood stacks from against buildings; • Reduce dampness under or around the house by installing surface drainage systems, and, • Have your house regularly inspected for termites. (This won’t prevent attacks, but can help reduce the damage bill, which can sometimes top more than $10,000.) If you find termites (or insects you think may be termites) don’t disturb them – get professional help as soon as possible. www.archicentre.com.au

SPORT Football passion in the service of Goldfields women When Krista Woodroffe started playing football, she quickly developed a love for the game that went beyond merely kicking a ball. Having spent a number of years playing and coaching netball, she first turned her attention to football in 2015. “I’ve been playing for the last couple of years,” she said. “I started at Bacchus Marsh and then played with North Geelong in the VFL. “I have a passion for the game and want to develop it for future females. “I want to create a pathway for other females that I didn’t have.” Woodroffe took on a casual role as a schools female participation officer with North Melbourne and its VFL aligned club, Werribee, to kick-start her administration career in the
industry. This year, she’s moved into a full-time football role as the AFL Goldfields region’s first female football manager. The role comprises three different areas, all which involve developing and nurturing female football. Woodroffe will manage AFL Goldfields women, youth girls and junior girls football competitions and female game development including schools and Auskick. She will also be involved with local TAC Cup sides, helping co-ordinate their youth girls and under-15 academies. Woodroffe is enthused about building something that will be around in the long term. “It’s about getting a base for kids,” she said. “It’s about going into schools in the region and
getting them interested. It’s important to have programs for kids that want to start playing football. Once they have the passion, they’ll become part of clubs. “It’s really good for clubs to want to be involved. A lot of clubs have had it in the back of their minds for a while, but the ability to expand wasn’t there. “We want clubs in viable positions that they can build towards having girls becoming part of the AFL.” AFL Goldfields is expecting to have between 45 and 50 female sides competing across three age groups this season, up from 20 sides last year. In the longer term Woodroffe would love to have the Goldfields female program match that of the men.
Up there with the best By Tara Murray Having been so close but missing out in the past, Melton Thoroughbreds’ Liam Allison didn’t have high hopes of making the Victorian under-18 country basketball team for this year’s state championships. So when he got the news last month that he’d made the final cut he was more than a little excited. “I’ve watched my brother [Blake] do it a couple of times. Now it’s finally my turn,” he said. “I’d made it to the last round a couple of times but not to the end. This year I was more relaxed and focused on being a team player. “It was still a relief to make it. I was driving a car at the time and had to pull over to answer the phone. I got back on the road but had to pull over again and switch places with mum as it was too much excitement for me to drive.” Allison is unsure what to expect at April’s state championships but is hoping they’ll provide some good competition. The game is in his blood and it wouldn’t surprise many that he picked up a basketball as a child. The brothers have long had a basketball in hand and their father John has been heavily involved in coaching. In fact, he’ll coach Liam at the Thoroughbreds this season. “I just started running around with Blake,” Allison said. “I skipped Aussie Hoops and everything like that and went straight into it. “It’s been difficult watching Blake [and what he’s done] as I’ve always wanted to be there myself. He has almost guided me as that’s where I wanted to be.” The 17-year-old will again combine playing with the Thoroughbreds with under-18 duties with Melbourne Tigers on Friday nights. He looks set to spend more time with the Thoroughbreds’ senior team than their youth league side. Last year, he averaged 11 points a game in youth league division 2, with the Thoroughbreds making finals for the first time. “Last year I was in youth league, and I’ve been a development/bench player for the men’s team the past couple of seasons. “It’s good, as not only do I improve but I help them with training and working hard, and that helps make them better players just as much as I’m getting better. “It’s been really good playing with the older men, getting used to playing against bigger bodies.” As for what’s next with his career, Allison is happy to see where it takes him. “I won’t be disappointed if that [the championships] is as far as it takes me. If I’ve tried my hardest that’s all that matters.” Fellow Melton basketballer Broden Collins has been named an emergency for the team. “Broden definitely deserves it,” Allison says. “He’s bottom-age and will come up next year and do us proud, that’s for sure.” 48 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ FEBRUARY 21, 2017
“We want to have as many teams as possible,” she said. She said the new AFL women’s competition would help encourage girls to get involved in the game. Woodroffe hasn’t been surprised by the success of the AFL women’s competition. “It’s something that has needed to happen for the last couple of years,” she said. “The interest has been there and the media coverage has really pushed it.” Woodroffe’s football commitments won’t be restricted to her full-time job. She’s been named in the Geelong VFL women’s squad and is an assistant coach for the Western Jets’ inaugural under-18 girls side. Tara Murray

Melton’s hopes of a top four finish in Bowls Victoria Pennant division 1 section 1 are getting slimmer by the round. Melton is seventh, 21 points behind fourth-placed Essendon (2) with two rounds remaining. On Saturday, Melton lost to Glenroy, 93 (18)-63 (0).
Swimming
Melton Swimming Club had 40 competitors at the Victorian State Sprint titles earlier this month. Six swimmers made finals, with three winning medals. Jack Carr won three gold and a bronze medal, Karlos Nuestro won one gold, one bronze and made two other finals, and Noah O’Donnell won a bronze medal and made two other finals. Manar Mahfouz, Alisha Walters and Gabriel Atienza made finals. Carr has qualified for the national titles for the first time.

Bacchus Marsh has been knocked out of the Central Highlands Bowls division 1 finals. Facing reigning premier Kyneton Golf, Bacchus Marsh lost 97-77, winning just one rink. Golf will play Lancefield in the preliminary final. Gisborne awaits the winner in the grand final. In division 2, Diggers Rest sealed a grand final spot with a 93-90 win against Kyneton. Bacchus Marsh won the other semi-final and will play Kyneton for a spot in the grand final.

Storm openers lay foundation for finals campaign Sydenham-Hillside has its top-four spot in the north A1 Victorian Turf Cricket Association competition under lock and key. An in-form Storm dismantled second-placed Sunshine YCW by 125 runs in the first innings of the penultimate round at Kinder Smith Reserve on Saturday, giving more momentum to their finals campaign. “It was the most complete performance of the season by a mile,” Storm skipper Kane Twentyman said. “I put it on the boys on Friday night that we hadn’t put in a really complete performance, so it would be nice to bowl a side out, hold all our catches and not be sloppy – and we were able to execute that. “It was a good solid all-round effort.” Sydenham-Hillside went into the day chock full of confidence after posting an intimidating 9-282 declared. Storm’s opening batsmen Steven Sandhu (59)
and Warren Hackney (129) laid the foundations for a match-winning score. “The two of them set the game up perfectly for us,” Twentyman said. “It took a bit of a while for Warren to get in, because Steve was hitting the ball quite well, so he was playing second fiddle to him for a bit. “Once Steve went out, Warren took the mantle, and I think he batted 65 or so overs and spent a lot of time out there, which is what we needed.” Sydenham-Hillside still needed to bowl well to defend the total, and also to notch up enough points to edge closer to Sunshine YCW in the standings. YCW is second with one round to go, and the Storm has a sneaky chance of claiming a home semi-final if final round results go its way. But a flat YCW was never in the hunt, bowled out for just 157, then posting 5-56 after the follow-on. Twentyman was the chief destroyer

for the Storm with 6-41. “I bowled through the middle order with Alex Hassett, and we just bowled in a partnership,” Twentyman said.
Bulls, Burras still alive By Tara Murray The finals hopes of Bacchus Marsh and Diggers Rest Bulla remain alive in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s McIntyre Cup. Both teams pulled off big wins on Saturday to ensure they remain in the mix heading into the final round. The Bulls pulled off the win of the round in a thriller against Woodend that went down to the last ball. With both sides fighting for a finals spot, the match was crucial. The Bulls had the runs on the board, having made 9-236 on day one. Woodend started well and at 3-129 looked to be on track to get the runs. The loss of two quick wickets slowed Woodend down slightly, but with plenty of experience still to come the side stayed in the game. Woodend got to within 11 runs of victory when the ninth wicket fell. The equation got down to three runs off the final ball, with Josh Eastley run out trying to get the winning runs. The Bulls shared the wickets around, with four players taking two wickets each. The win keeps Bacchus Marsh in the finals hunt, sitting fifth headed into the final round and overtaking Woodend, which slipped to sixth. Diggers Rest Bulla was the other big winner at the weekend, moving back into the top four with victory against Sunbury. Defending 179, the Burras bowled Sunbury out for 146. Darren Quarrell was the destroyer with the ball, taking 8-54 off 22.4 overs. The Burras hit 2-38 in their second innings. Sunbury, which has lost its past three games, has slipped from first to third and could miss the finals if it losses to second-placed Gisborne in the final round. Just over 12 points separates first to sixth. On paper, the Bulls and Burras have the easiest matches in the final round. The Burras face bottom side Romsey, while the Burras play second-bottom Rupertswood. Romsey and Rupertswood will be searching for wins in their bids to avoid bottom spot and relegation at season’s end. Third-placed Sunbury faces second-placed Gisborne, while Woodend takes on ladder leader Riddell. In B grade, St Anthonys will be playing for pride in the final round after losing to Wallan. The Saints’ finals hopes were faint heading into the match – but they needed a big win. Chasing 258, the Saints could only manage 6-201. Paul Scott scored 83 not out. The Bulls’ seconds need a win and will be hoping results go their way to seal a finals berth. The Bulls’ life was made tough with a loss to Sunbury United. They face bottom side Bacchus Marsh in the final round.
“We really put the foot down on them. “I just bowled full and straight, didn’t do too much to challenge them. “But they played around the front pad a few times, and I got lucky.” With one two-day game left in the season, Moonee Valley is confirmed minor premiers, while Sunshine YCW (94.59), Sydenham-Hillside (90.92) and Sunshine (87.91) are likely to jostle for positions two through to four, though fifth-placed Aberfeldie Park is still a slim chance. “Being four points away from second spot, we’d need a bit of luck [to get a home final],” Twentyman said. “Sunshine YCW have an easier game against Barkly Street than we do against East Coburg … but you just never know. “We’ve put ourselves in the mix.” Lance Jenkinson
Shield hopes rest with final round results The equation is simple for Rockbank; avoid defeat to St Johns in the final round of the Western Suburbs Churches & Community Cricket Association’s A.E Lowe Shield, and play finals. Lose outright and it will come down to percentages between the two … or the Rams will have to rely on an upset win by bottom side AA Maidstone over other finals’ hopeful West Melbourne. Having won the past three games, the Rams can be confident of its final round match-up, but won’t be taking it easy, player Daniel Piccolo insists. Piccolo knows this could be a danger game, with his side likely to be missing four out of its regulars through work and other commitments, including himself. “Jackson Spencer will be missing, so will Mathew Paull, and I’m not going to be able to play,” he said. “If we make finals, we should have everyone back.” On Saturday, the Rams easily accounted for Taylors Hill, but couldn’t get the outright points that would have sealed their finals’ fate. Taylors Hill made 140 in its innings, with Rockbank resuming at 0-25, before going on to make 5-213. Piccolo said it was fantastic to see the efforts of Spencer and Paull. “Mathew hadn’t bowled all season,” he said. “He took four wickets and bowled the house down. “Jackson then made his second straight century. He ended up 101 not-out. He’s hitting form at the right time.” The Rams then sent Taylors Hill back in, with a lead of 73 on the first innings. But Taylors Hill made 6-105. Piccolo said it is imperative they get the job done in the final round. “We definitely want to go on and play the grand final. I would be happy if we could at least make the grand final.” In other matches, ladder-leaders Eynesbury Eagles recorded an easy outright victory, bowling Maidstone out for just 42 in the first innings, before declaring at 1-106. Maidstone put up more of a fight in the second innings, making 154. The Eagles changed the batting line-up and still made the runs with six wickets in hand. The Eagles finished 4-94, securing top spot with one round remaining. Meanwhile, Williams Landing defeated St Johns, and West Melbourne accounted for Altona Sports.

Stallions set the pace for young bloods The FFA Cup season was short-lived for Spring Hills, eliminated in the qualifying round on Saturday 2-1 by Craigieburn City at Springside Recreation Reserve. While the cup dream is over for the Stallions, the early exit was not totally unexpected and there were some positives to come out of the game. “Disappointing to lose, but I think the boys played well,” Stallions’ football director Tom Markovski said. “There was not a big emphasis put on that [the FFA Cup] because the boys we put out on the park was more our reserves’ team. “We haven’t finalised our senior squad because it’s still six weeks away from the season. “You live with the result – it was more about how we played.” All but three of Spring Hills’ players were 18 or less. Despite their inexperience, most of
the youngsters held up their ends well for the Stallions. After playing just five senior games last season, Yonas Sisay put his hand up for a regular start at left back, with a strong showing. “He’s up and down [the pitch], good on the ball, very composed for a young kid, and gets stuck in as well,” Markovski said. “Players like that are the future of the club.” Jordan Mancini, who endured an injury-interrupted season last year, made a promising start at centre back, Ben Klapsas provided speed on the right wing and Dylan Magro scored the Stallions’ single goal. Markovski was encouraged by the performances of the young guns. He envisages the average age of the team will be younger this year as the Stallions keep an eye towards the future. By providing opportunities for youngsters
in the senior team, the Stallions also hope to combat raids by the NPL clubs on their playing stocks. “The idea at the club is that we’re going to put the young ones in there and get them right to go,” Markovski said. “If we don’t get promoted this year, we want to be set up for the next three years, and that’s what we’re looking for at the moment. “I’m sick of all these NPL teams not just taking our best players, but taking our teams. “Our under 15s team last year … that played in an under 16s league and won that league… that whole team and the coach has gone to NPL. “That’s the third team that has gone. “It’s good though, it shows we’re doing the right things and developing the kids the right way.”

More than runs, wickets By Tara Murray Thomas Cooper and Jake Lee are important players for Melton South Primary School Cricket Club. They don’t score the most runs or take bags of wickets, but sometimes cricket is about more than statistics. When the boys, who have special needs, became too old to continue in the junior age groups for the 2015-16 season, it looked as though they might have to stop playing with the club. Royals treasurer Chris Pleitner had other ideas. The club formed a team to play in the Western Suburbs Churches and Community Cricket Association’s D-grade competition. This season, the side is playing in F grade. “Tommy has been with us for quite a number of years, since under-14s,” Pleitner said. “I coached him then. Jake came across two or three years ago. I got to know them really well. 50 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ FEBRUARY 21, 2017
I’d decided I’d finished playing cricket, but I wanted these boys to continue to play. I will continue to play so they can play.” Last season, the Royals had five players with special needs in the side after an umpire who heard about the team got his son and a couple of his friends involved, too. This season there are three players with special needs: Cooper, Lee and Aiden McDonald (who also played last season). Pleitner says most teams are understanding of what they’re trying to do. “We always try to give them a bat and bowl,” he said. “We’ll switch it around so they all get an equal shot at both. Some of the other teams will slow it down and they’ll bring on their kids to bat and bowl.” Pleitner says it’s pure enjoyment for the rest of the team watching the boys play cricket. All three take turns going out to the toss of the coin. “Tommy took a catch the other week and Tommy doesn’t take too many catches,” Pleitner said. “It was the best thing for him.
Jake almost took a couple of wickets. Both are just so excited and happy. They just want to play cricket.” The three youngsters have their own personal competitions – who can take the most wickets or make the most runs – and they also get involved with the club’s social events. Saturday’s Pink Stumps day was especially special for Cooper, whose mum is battling cancer. Pleitner, who is senior vice-president of the WSCCCA, said he would love to see more sides take a similar approach. Specifically, he would love to see a connection made with the local specialist school. “The association has really supported it. Wyndham has an all-abilities competition which runs every two to three weeks, but we’d love to have a weekly competition within the association, with teams that have some special-needs players in them. They don’t want to be singled out. They just want to play cricket with everyone else.”
Bacchus Marsh Soccer Club hopes to advance its female program this season. The Scorpions under-16 girls team has been around about two years, but this season the club wants to add an under-11, under-18 and women’s side to run alongside the existing team. The club’s female development officer, Hilda Vergles, said while there are enough players to field a side, there are not enough to fill a particular age group. “We have 13 girls in total through from under-13s to seniors,” she said. “We could have one team, but it would mean the young girls would have to play in the seniors against the bigger bodies.” Vergles said interest from new players had been slow, but the club is heavily promoting its female program in schools, and beyond. “We’re looking for anyone who wants to get involved and we’re happy to teach the game,” said Vergles, who played at South Melbourne with former Australian goalkeeper Melissa Barbieri. “It’s great for fitness and a great social outlet. Being part of a team sport helps you learn life lessons.” Vergles said the club is undecided which competition the sides will play in, with the option either the Ballarat & District Soccer Association or Melbourne based FFV metro league competitions. Either way, the sides will play on Sundays and train Wednesday and Friday nights. “Last year, we played in the Ballarat league with all the boys teams, and you play sides like Daylesford and Creswick. “There’s also the metro league, where we’d play teams like Melton and Sydenham,” Vergles said. “I’d prefer to stay in the Ballarat league, but we’re going to let the parents have a big say.” As well as being female development officer, Vergles is assistant to coach Craig Bradfield. She said getting more female sides was about developing the young club, which formed in 2008 with three sides. This year there will be four MiniRoos teams, from under-8s through to under-11s, under-13s, under-15s, under-17s and a men’s team, plus female and girls sides. The club also has Monday night soccer and runs programs over summer to keep players involved. “It’s a fun club and we’re trying to expand it and take it from there.” Details: jeff.hildavergles@hotmail.com or 0405 492 807. Making of the modern tyre The modern tyre is more than just rubber and tread. Modern pneumatic (air pressured) tyres are made of natural and synthetic rubbers, fabric and wire, in a creative chemical mix. In the early 1800s, tyres were simple leather straps around a steel or wooden frame, then steel became the mod. It was 1845 when the idea of a pressured air tyre was first conceived. That’s a lot of sore backsides considering the bicycle was invented by German Baron Karl von Drais, in 1817!
Today, natural liquid latex goes through a long manufacturing process before it is moulded into the rubber tubes that absorb shock, and give us the relatively smooth ride we all expect these days. Firstly, a combination of natural and synthetic rubber, together with oils and the many chemicals mentioned earlier, are mixed together in huge vats.
The pneumatic tyre was the invention of Scotsman Robert Thomson, who patented the design with an inner tube in 1845.
These are automated to keep the mix blended and turning, before it is divided into batches weighing almost 500 kilograms each (that’s half a tonne).
It was re-invented with an updated patent in the late 1800s by yet another Scotsman, John Boyd Dunlop – an instant success among cyclists. It would be another century before the formula changed significantly.
Each batch is then re-milled, firstly heated to create a smooth consistency, with more chemicals added, then rolled out to create thick sheets. Website www.madehow.com explains that each sheet is used to create a layer of the tyre, called a ply.

When you purchase a new set of these modern marvels, how do you maintain them? Did you know fuel is wasted if tyres are not pumped up to manufacturer’s recommendations? For the average sedan, somewhere between 20 and 30psi is suggested. But why not call your local tyre specialist to find out what your perfect tyre type, and pressure, should be? Sam Freestone

Different chemical mixes are used for the tread, sides and main body of each tyre, and each area requires a separate process. Then all the components are brought together to form what is known as the ‘green’ tyre. Once this is made, it is put in a mould for curing.

Each passenger tyre is fabricated using an average of four ply. Wire is used for the ‘beads’ of the tyre, to thread the ply together and reinforce the strength of the whole fabric.
