School rejects patka By Sumeyya Ilanbey A five-year-old boy has been refused a place at a private Melton Christian school because his turban contravenes its uniform policy. Sidhak was preparing to start prep this week at Melton Christian College – a school close to home, and where many of his friends and cousins go. But Sidhak’s family say the school refused to enrol the young boy because his patka – a child’s version of the Sikh turban – was not compliant with the school uniform. The family has lodged a complaint with the Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission and has taken Melton Christian College to the Victorian Civil Administrative Tribunal, with a final hearing scheduled for April. The school council refused to amend its uniform policy to accommodate students wearing headgear on religious grounds, dad Sagardeep Singh told Star Weekly.

“I thought the school might reconsider their options because turbans are now accepted everywhere – in workplaces, the army, police services,” Mr Singh said. “Why can’t a kid go to school wearing one?” The Singhs arrived in Australia two years ago, settling in Melton South. Mr Singh said he knew he wanted to send his children to Melton Christian College following recommendations from friends and extended family. “We’re not against the school … we think Melton Christian College is the best school in the area,” Mr Singh said. “We just want them to consider to allow students from different backgrounds and religions to be able to attend and (express) their faith. “They need to accommodate their uniform policy to reflect the diverse community.” Uncut hair and turbans are requirements of the Sikh religion. Victoria has strict anti-discrimination laws, including the Equal Opportunity Act and the Racial and Religious Tolerance Act, making direct and indirect discrimination illegal. The law describes the latter as “an unreasonable requirement, condition or practice that may appear to treat people equally”, one that is “imposed in a particular

Slower go for motorists as bridges revamp starts There will be two lanes of Melbourne-bound traffic and one lane of Ballarat-bound traffic using the bridge and a 60km/h speed limit will be in place. In early April, the situation will be reversed, with the Ballarat-bound bridge closed and two lanes of Melbourne-bound traffic and one lane of Ballarat-bound traffic using the Melbourne-bound bridge. The upgrades are expected to be completed by late May. VicRoads has warned that drivers can expect minor delays until then. VicRoads acting regional director Chris Dunlop said the safety of road users and

construction workers remained the top priority. “Closing the bridges one at a time and moving traffic over to the other bridge means drivers will be well clear of the roadworks, allowing for work to be completed quicker and safer. “We only expect minor delays that last a matter of minutes, as the slower speed limits are only in place for a short stretch of road.” Upgrading the Lerderderg River bridges forms part of VicRoads’ strategy to improve freight productivity by catering for

Gongs sound the thanks By Sumeyya Ilanbey All the Australia Day award nominees were worthy recipients of the honour, Melton mayor Sophie Ramsey said as she announced this year’s winners. At Melton council’s Australia Day celebrations last Thursday, there was lots to celebrate – many people who’d worked selflessly to help others, and the 180 who were being welcomed as new Australian citizens This year’s top gong – citizen of the year – went to Alan Perry for his dedication to his community and many volunteer organisations. Ten-year-old Amy Bell was named young citizen of the year. The pint-sized star rallied 38 riders for the Steer North Bike Ride, raising more than $800. Melton’s woman of the year award was given to Joy Lawn – a tireless volunteer at the L2P program. She’s mentored 16 young people and clocked up 960 driver training hours. The Western Emergency Relief Network – which helps people doing it tough – was named community project of the year. The group has only been around for 18 months, but in the past financial year helped more than 500 families and collected upwards of 400,000 items. Barb and Bob Patterson have been foster carers to children with disabilities for the past two decades. The duo were named the access and inclusion leaders of the year for their tireless efforts. Meanwhile in Moorabool, John Molesworth was named citizen of the year for his work with a number of volunteer organisations. And in the young citizen of the year category, there were five winners – Natasha Ford, Tristan Mair, Brady Dunne, Anthony Young and Matthew Wetherall. The youngsters trained as junior CFA members in District 15 and were nominated because of their commitment to protecting the community during the Scotsburn fires last year. The Best Start Literacy Trail was named ‘community event of the year’.

The Western Freeway is the country’s second busiest freight route, with an average of 33,000 vehicles using this section of freeway daily. Freight vehicles make up 12 per cent of this traffic. Pentland Hills tobacco raid by cops, ATO Illegal tobacco valued at $1.5 million, a loaded firearm and ammunition have been seized from a Pentland Hills property. Victoria Police and Australian Taxation Office officials last week visited the property and found about 1.6 hectares of illegal tobacco plants. The warrant followed similar searches on New South Wales and Victorian properties in November and December as part of an ongoing investigation. An ATO spokesman said no arrests had been made. ATO deputy commissioner Michael Cranston said illegally grown tobacco took money outside Australia’s tax system and into the pockets of criminals. “Those that break the law will be brought to account,” Mr Cranston said. “The ATO collaborates with partner agencies to stamp out criminal activity – if you engage in it, you will be caught.” He urged residents to be vigilant about their surrounding and consider what could be growing on nearby properties. “The community can play a role in reducing the illegal tobacco trade by remaining aware of their surroundings,” he said. “If something looks suspicious, contact the police.” Growing tobacco in Australia was made illegal 11 years ago and no commercial tobacco licences have been granted by the ATO since then. Illegally grown tobacco is an offence under the Excise Act, which is overseen by the ATO.

Speed limits have been cut to 40km/h along part of the Western Highway in Bacchus Marsh as important upgrades to the Lerderderg River bridges begin. A 40 km/h speed limit will be in place for traffic in both directions until late February to provide a safe environment for the construction of crossovers between the Melbourne and Ballarat lanes. Once they are completed in late February, the Melbourne-bound bridge will be closed and drivers will cross the river on the Ballarat-bound bridge.

Arts go to heart of the good life By Sumeyya Ilanbey Artistic communities are happier and more engaged, and Bacchus Marsh Arts Council wants to use the power of the arts to offer more people a richer cultural life. Council secretary John Spain said promoting the arts and building an engaging local arts culture had been neglected for far too long in lieu of other activities, such as sports. His comments come in response to a recent Australia Council for the Arts analysis, which revealed only a quarter of residents in Melbourne’s west visited a museum or art gallery in the 2013-14 financial year.

“What is this thing called art? What does it mean? How does it affect the community?” Mr Spain said. “There’s been a lag in understanding what art is and how it impacts a local culture. “Once people start understanding that and art becomes higher up on the scales, you’ll have a greater participation and greater attendance at museums.” And artists must take a proactive approach to buck this trend, he urged. A recent study, published in the BioMed Central Public Health journal, looked at the connection between mental health wellbeing and people’s engagement with the arts.

‘‘

We hope that art can do that for today’s young - John Spain people

’’

The Art of Being Mentally Healthy was the first study, internationally, to quantify the arts-mental health relationship. It found people who are engaged in the arts for two hours per week had “significantly” better mental wellbeing compared with those who didn’t. Mr Spain said it was important to engage young people and attract them to art galleries, museums and theatres.

“If they’re not attractive to kids, I think we’re missing something,” he said. “Some of our memories, that are still from way back at times, was when we saw something different, or interesting – it’s stuck with us for the rest of our lives. “And we hope that art can do that for today’s young people.” Australia Council for the Arts chief executive Tony Grybowski hopes the analysis will inform governments, as well as the arts sector. “The ongoing use of this data, combined with data at a local government level, will build a richer picture of our participation in cultural activities across Australia,” he said.

Car show shines on Classic cars, custom trucks and vintage bikes … there’s something for everyone at this year’s David Calleja Memorial Car Show. The annual family-friendly event, hosted by Djerriwarrh Health Services, is in its 12th year and the crowds are lining up again. DJHS chief executive Andrew Freeman said there would be plenty to see, do and taste, including swap-meets and raffles, and rides for the kids. “And, of course, the main attraction being a great variety of vehicles, ranging from hot rods to classic, vintage and exotic cars, trucks and bikes,” Mr Freeman said. Funds raised from the David Calleja Memorial Car Show go towards buying medical equipment for the Bacchus Marsh and Melton Regional Hospital and Melton Health. Mr Calleja was a much-loved local

Crusade on for cousins By Charlene Macaulay A western suburbs family is grappling with a fatal genetic condition that has struck three of their children. Tarneit grandmother Sue Tantaro is doing all she can to support her three grandsons – Anthony, Jakob and Lukas – who were all born with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD), a condition that causes muscle wasting, breathing difficulties and heart problems. The degenerative disease means by the time the boys are 12, they will lose their ability to walk. In their teens, they’ll lose their upper body function and will eventually become quadriplegics. Most DMD sufferers usually die from heart or respiratory failure in their early to mid 20s. The condition affects one in 3500 boys and one in 50 million girls. Sue’s eldest grandson, Anthony, was diagnosed three years ago just shy of his fifth birthday. The family then discovered his condition was hereditary. By this time, Maree’s sister, Samantha, already had son Jakob, now five, and was heavily pregnant with Lukas, now three. Both boys have since been diagnosed with DMD. Sue’s other daughter, Logan, is now being tested for the disease-carrying gene. If she is found to have it, Logan will opt to have children through IVF, which can eliminate the risk of her children having DMD. “I think I’ve cried every day since Anthony was four and 10 months. As a grandparent, I worry about my daughters, who worry about their own children,” Sue said. Samantha and Maree will eventually have to quit their jobs to be full-time carers for their sons. The family is keen to raise awareness about

early detection of the disease, and will hold a fundraiser next month to go towards the boys’ medical and lifestyle expenses. Sue estimates that it will cost more than $1 million to care for the boys, who will need wheelchairs, modified cars and houses, and regular physiotherapy, speech therapy and hydrotherapy.

“The government does help, but there’s not unlimited funds,” she said. “We are working with (charity) Save Our Sons. There is hope … you always live in hope.” A Cousins’ Crusade cocktail party fundraiser will be held at Berth Restaurant and Events on March 17. Details at: cousinscrusade.eventbrite.com

New ambos ready to roll Melton’s new paramedics will be on the roads in less than a fortnight as the state government’s multimillion dollar boost to ambulance services kicks in. As part of the deal, Melton will get a new ambulance station and vehicle, as well as 14 extra full-time equivalent paramedics. The first two new recruits started their three-week induction last week and will be stationed at Melton on Monday, February 13. Ambulance Services Minister Jill Hennessy said 48 new paramedics were being inducted in this round. Once finished, 10 will be based in the western metropolitan region, 27 in the eastern metropolitan region, two in Barwon South West, five in the Hume and four in the Loddon regions. “This is the biggest investment in Victoria’s history to cut ambulance response times and employ more paramedics to save more lives,” Ms Hennessy said. “With more paramedics on the road, ambulances will be able to respond even more quickly, meaning families can have confidence … they will get the care they need when they need it.” Ambulance Employees Union Victorian branch secretary Steve McGhie previously told Star Weekly the $500 million Ambulance boost would mean there’d be local back-up when paramedics transport patients to hospitals. Women kicking goals – Bacchus Marsh Football Club will show you that. Formed just two years ago, the club’s women’s team is already making its mark. The 19-player team has been in the finals for the past two years, and all eyes are on a premiership this season. But senior coach Hayley Gossow, who is also assistant coach with Collingwood AFL, says the team needs more female players to get behind the “fastest growing sport” in Victoria. “With all the promotion for the AFL women’s league, there’s a lot of interest in women’s footy,” Gossow says. “We’ve had big spectators and big crowds for our practice matches.” Fit women over the age of 18, with good ball skills, are urged to come along to a training session and try out the sport. Gossow says the team is all about getting out, kicking a ball, and having a go. “It’s a bit of fun for the girls,” she says. “I guess for them, it’s about seeing themselves improve. You don’t have to commit straight away, but we’d encourage everyone to come and have a go.” While there are 19 players on the team, Gossow says the number of women playing some weeks falls to as few as 13 or 14. Team manager Rod Bertram says, with the AFL women’s league set to launch this weekend, it’s the perfect time to get involved. “We will play in the newly formed Ballarat

9 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ JANUARY 31, 2017

NEWS STARWEEKLY.COM.AU

MY PLACE For the past five decades, John Molesworth has been dedicated to the Ballan community and its sporting clubs. The 72-year-old, who is Moorabool’s Citizen of the Year 2017, speaks to Sumeyya Ilanbey. I live on a property (in Morrisons) that’s been in our family for 102 years. I’ve been here since about 1952. Before that, we lived in Colvern, near Hamilton. What’s your favourite thing about Morrisons? It’s a good farming area, and it’s a friendly community and the sporting facilities are pretty good – there’s ample opportunity for young people to get involved in sports. One of the most important things in life is to have young people playing sport, and I think that would solve a lot of our mental health problems if it was compulsory for kids to be actively involved in sports. What would you change about the area? Getting more young people involved in sports … I don’t think you can ever have enough (sports grounds), but they need to be continually upgraded. Where’s your favourite place to hang out? I like the footy grounds – I go there a lot during winter. I’ve formed friendships, met new people and can witness young people actively being involved in sports. How do you feel about being Moorabool council’s citizen of the year? Initially, I was a bit embarrassed because I’ve never thought being involved in community

activities needs to be acknowledged. You do it because you want to see people get involved – you just like seeing people involved in sports. It was also a bit of a surprise. When the person nominated me, I wasn’t that keen to accept the nomination because I prefer to be in the background. But the best part of receiving this award has been council’s acknowledgement of someone in sports. Why is it important for young people to be involved in sports and clubs? A lot of kids now are not taking the opportunity of playing sports. Sport is the greatest form of character building – you learn how to win, you learn how to lose and you learn to be in a team. My son went on school camp with 50 kids, and he couldn’t believe how many of them couldn’t ride a pushbike – that was never heard of 15 years ago. You learn a lot about life being involved in sport … and, like I said, I’ve made lifelong friendships. What are your plans for the future? Still where I am – still farming and working on the farm. I’m enjoying it, and as long as I enjoy it, I want to continue doing it. I don’t have plans to coach again, but I enjoy watching my grandchildren play sport, give them advice. Mr Molesworth was nominated for his contributions to volunteer organisations, including Ballan Cricket Club, Ballan Football Club, Ballan Jockey Club, Ballarat Turf Club, Ballarat Agricultural and Pastoral Society, and the Morrisons CFA.

FOOD REVIEW

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir enjoys a tasty lesson in south Indian cuisine Sankranti has been open a few weeks, and in that time I’ve enjoyed some nice south Indian food – pooris, a biryani. But I’ve left it to do a story for the weekend when the restaurant is serving up three days of special menus to celebrate the festival after which it’s named. On the plus side, for me that means a beaut and very photogenic feed. On the down side, a one-off vegetarian feast cannot be taken as representative of the regular menu. So let’s look at it this way – my Saturday lunch meal may not be what you’ll get on a regular visit here, but it does represent the care and love that goes into the Sankranti food. The Saturday Sankranti deal costs me $29 (see details below). Quite a bit for a vegetarian thali, eh? Well, no. I’m happy to pay up, such is the diversity of tastes and textures, some of them familiar, many of them new to me, and some even challenging. Latha talks me through some of the particulars and rituals normally involved with eating this sort of festive food. I even give the traditional eating order a go: sweets first, soup, and yogurt last. The sweets don’t look very appetising, do they? Not so – they make lovely eating, though in quite a different way from the more familiar Indian sweets such as kulfi.

SANKRANTI AUSTRALIA Address: 250 Barkly Street, Footscray Phone: 9041 9899 But a lifetime of culinary indoctrination of the soup/mains/sweets school is hard to kick. And the effort of mentally trying to match new and interesting names with specific dishes tumbles into the realm of information overload. So in the end, I just go with my own flow and enjoy the dazzling array before me. I especially like the rasam, the deep-fried and battered okra, the spicy coriander rice, and the rice and vermicelli pudding that is payasam. This has been a humbling reminder that for all the Indian food I eat, in terms of regional diversity and a fabulously rich food culture, I am a mere beginner.

LATHA PREPARES TO WELCOME SANKRANTI GUESTS

VEGETARIAN FESTIVE THALI

Prepare for grassfire If you live in a suburb near grasslands, you’re at risk of fire. If you live directly next to parks or paddocks and a grassfire starts, walk at least two streets back. If you live two or more streets away, stay where you are, grassfires are unlikely to spread into built up areas. Stay alert and monitor conditions. Don’t drive, visibility may be poor, accidents are likely, and you could block emergency services.

14 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ JANUARY 31, 2017

And then there’s the melons – water, honeydew, rock – which, though we see them

nearly year round, still only taste like they should in summer. What is with a honeydew in winter, all anaemic and naked without its necessary green-ery? Nectarines and peaches – subtle whites, ballsy yellows; plums – green, yellow, purple and red, crisp or juicy, fresh or stewed; raspberries that look like the lollies; strawberries where you can actually taste the sunshine; blackberries and blueberries (although the latter’s superfood status is slightly above its actual flavour level – that’s why they get shoved into muffins.) Don’t start on grapes. Who can stop at a handful when the purples pop, the reds race and the greens gallop into an eager mouth? They’re positively virtuous to eat because their vines support our precious bees, so true of every fruit.

The cherry, Australia’s version of the Christmas holly berry (because they’re somewhere at every festive meal), possibly shares the summer princess crown with the mango. But they have to be the big, firm, dark purple type to keep the crown. Those lighter red, often softer, ones aren’t really contenders, are they? If you’re lucky enough to have a backyard with any of the above summer bounty, we’ll try not to be jealous. We’ll just stalk our greengrocers for the freshest and best and get on with it, like any fruit lover and the health-focused should. Carole Levy

In the heart of horse breeding country, Glencoe is a circa 1860 bluestone dwelling sitting on about 58.6 hectares on three titles, with subdivision potential, STCA. Following his family’s arrival from Ireland, Andrew Beaty built Glencoe using bluestone quarried on the property, with offcuts used for the bluestone outbuilding that retains its rough-hewn poles in adjoining open bays. The historically significant property, kept in the same family until quite recent times, is ready for new owners to make their own. Council-approved plans exist for

a substantial extension, should that be your direction. Entry is under a verandah that runs along three sides, into a traditional hallway where all the heritage features are on display – buffed-up original floorboards, ceiling rosettes, decorative door frames, deep skirts and cornices, and a corbelled arch. To the left is the first of three bedrooms, this one with opaque glass-fronted wardrobes and a stained-glass door to a fully tiled en suite with walk-in shower. This connects with a laundry with storage and powder room.

The other bedrooms, along the hallway, include one set up as a library with original fireplace, polished timber ceiling and a stack of bookshelves. The other has the same ceiling style, as well as opaque glass-fronted wardrobes. Across the hall is a modern bathroom with walk-in shower and a timber bench atop good storage. A lounge room at the front has multi-paned French door access and a magnificent mantelpiece around a wood heater. are completed, and ducted heating and cooling is in place. The mostly flat land, with 360-degree panoramas of hills and open country, has wonderful drystone walls, multiple dams, a bore, a new septic system, large paddocks, a huge shed and cattleyard, and water tanks with 200,000-litre capacity. Hay production has good income potential and cattle and horses will be right at home here. Glencoe, a pioneer of the region, is ready and waiting for a new chapter. SPORT Caroline Springs hockey takes a big leap in lead roles Caroline Springs Hockey Club has wasted no time in appointing experienced coaches for the club’s inaugural season. It’s been a busy few months for the club which was established late last year, as it’s gone about finding coaches and players. The club last week announced it had so far appointed four coaches. The programs for women and men will be run by Ron Shadbolt and David Gorton respectively. They bring a wealth of experience to the club. Most recently, they were co-coaches of the women’s teams at Melton Hockey Club, with both the seniors and reserves making finals last year. Shadbolt was a finalist for the 2016 Hockey Victoria male community coach of the year award. Randeep Reetu will look after the club’s Hookin2Hockey program, while Mel Lake will coach the under-10s.

Club vice-president Kathy Jungfer said the club was lucky to have secured such experienced coaches. She said there had been a lot of interest in the new club, which was started to help fill a hockey void in the area. “We looked at the demographic of Caroline Springs and there was nothing here,” she said. “It’s a growing sport in the west. At this stage, we’ve got two women’s teams, a men’s team and an under-10 team. We’ve already got 23 women ordering uniforms. “There’s been a lot of interest and great numbers at training. It’s all happened quickly.” Gorton said both himself and Shadbolt decided they needed a change of environment after coaching the Melton women’s teams together for the past three years.

“We both have similar philosophies,” he said. “We feel like we took the Melton sides as far as we could and it’s time for fresh faces. Now we want to replicate what we did at Melton here. “It’s a fresh opportunity and a good challenge.” Gorton said coaching different sides from Shadbolt would be a contrast to the Melton set-up, but both would look to continue the processes used previously. The club’s women are set to start in the pennant competition, while the men’s side will be in the lower metro competition. Jungfer said the club had been working with Melton council to secure a playing facility and was hopeful of announcing ground details in coming weeks. Details: carolinespringshockey.weebly.com Tara Murray

Burras back in the race By Tara Murray Diggers Rest Bulla knows its finals hopes are in its own hands. The Burras entered the current round of the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s McIntyre Cup sitting fourth on the ladder and less than a point ahead of Bacchus Marsh. And they are only a point and half behind third-placed Riddell. After what was probably their most disappointing result of the season in the previous round, the Burras bounced back in a big way on Saturday. Facing Rupertswood, the Burras bowled the opposition out for just 125. Burras captain-coach Rhys Berry said the players knew they needed to regroup. “The season was going down the drain if we didn’t win this round,” he said. “It was nice day and Rupertswood’s ground is as quick as it’s ever been. They started well and were about 0-25. “Once we got one wicket they kept rolling and couldn’t get any partnerships going. Darren [Quarrell] and Lindon [Dowsett] bowled really well.” Quarrell and Dowsett took three wickets apiece. Having bowled Rupertswood out for a low score, the bigger challenge for the Burras was to perform with the bat – something with which they have struggled at times this season. They will resume at 2-61. “Blake Robinson opened the batting and got a quick-fire 30 to get us going,” Berry said, “With such a low total, anything can happen. “We’re pretty confident going into next week.” Berry knows the Burras won’t be able take it easy next week, even if they get the runs early. Under the points system being used, every run and wicket is vital. “The first aim is to get past their score,” he said. “Then we’ll look at what benefits us most – to keep batting all day or look at sending them back in to get wickets. “If we keep winning we’ll play finals.” As well as playing day two of their match against Rupertswood, the Burras will face Woodend in a one-dayer on Sunday. In other matches, Bacchus Marsh put on 189 against second-placed Gisborne. Alex Porter made 62. In B grade, the Bulls are on track to knock off ladder leader Lancefield. The Bulls’ 130 didn’t seem enough, but their bowlers did the job late on day one to have the Tigers in trouble at 5-27. An unbeaten 145 to Paul Scott set up St Anthonys score of 272 against Macedon. Captain Cameron Clayton chipped in with 65. 42 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ JANUARY 31, 2017

New Cobras’ coach bites the bullet For Bacchus Marsh’s A-grade netball side, making Ballarat Netball League finals this season would be a big bonus. Firstly, under new coach Michael Saker, the side is looking to improve on last season, which netted just two wins and left it in 11th spot. “Probably for this season, we’ll be looking at bringing through players from the junior ranks,” Saker said. “We want to see signs of improvement. We were relatively competitive last season, but couldn’t get over the line in games. “We’re looking to improve in certain areas to finish off games. I want to improve in all grades. “If we make finals, it’s a bonus.” Saker is the third A-grade coach in as many years for the Cobras, replacing Dean Giarrusso, who moved interstate. He isn’t new to the club though. “I had come out for a couple of sessions with the club last year,” he said. “The previous coach asked me to come out and give a hand. “I knew a few of the players who I had played netball with, and they kept nagging me to apply for the job. “I bit the bullet.” Saker brings with him an extensive coaching and playing netball background. He’s been involved in netball for 15 years, playing at both state and international levels. He’s coached in the indoor state league competition and been involved in six national titles. Though this will be his first season with a football/netball club, it’s a challenge he’s excited to take on. On court, Saker said the Cobras are still finalising the playing squads. He’ll coach the A and B grade teams, while former A-grade coach Frank Pawlowicz will coach the C and D grade sides. One of the A-grade players is coaching the under-19s. “We had trials in November, but we still have to lock in a few positions in A-grade. We have got a few new recruits,” Saker said. “Most of girls from Bs and Cs are still there. People still interested can come down.” The Cobras start training this week, twice a week through to March.

Dodgy form a big threat to Melton’s finals aspirations Melton needs a quick change of fortune if it is to play any part in the Victorian Sub-district Cricket Association’s east-west finals. The Lions were cruising along before Christmas, sitting third on the ladder, but similar form has evaded them so far this year. The Lions have lost their past three games, the most recent on Saturday to Croydon. Needing 338 for victory, the Lions were never in the game, finishing 9-215. Lions playing coach Nathan Geisler said things hadn’t gone to plan in the run chase, with the side in trouble at 6-65.

“The aim was to try and have as many wickets as possible in the shed at tea time,” he said. “Then we would look at going five runs an over from there. “At tea we were a long shot, so the aim was to take it as deep as possible and try and bat out the overs. “It gave Ash Sweet and Jake Thornton-Gielen a good chance to have a bat. Hopefully, they can take that into next week against Yarraville. Thornton-Gielen fell for 43 and just before the end of the day Sweet was caught for 94. The loss means the Lions sit outside the top

six, two points behind sixth-placed Taylors Lakes. Geisler maintains things need to change if the Lions want to remain in finals contention. He said he’d talk to players during the week about how to turn things around. “After Christmas, we’ve been terrible,” he said. “Our batting hasn’t been up to scratch and our bowling was disappointing last week. “We’ve wasted a bit of an opportunity. We were in a good position before Christmas. “I spoke to them after the game and said we need to pull our fingers out.

“We need to change things up, otherwise we’re going to keep getting the same results.” The Lions’ challenge to make finals will not get any easier in the clash with Yarraville. “We’re not out of it,” Geisler said. “It’s a pretty even competition. “We play Yarraville and then we play Williamstown and Balwyn, who are one and two on the ladder. “If we make finals, we’ll know we’ve earnt it.” Tara Murray

each other that week,” Pritchard said. “Our destiny is in our own hands. “We play two sides who are outside the top four, and we should beat them. If we can’t we shouldn’t be playing finals.”

Sports shorts Pennant bowls

Melton’s best performance of 2017 wasn’t enough for victory against Deer Park in Bowls Victoria Pennant division 1 section 1. Little separated the teams all day. They split the rinks two apiece, with Deer Park winning 75 (14)-70 (4). The loss didn’t do Melton’s finals hopes any good – it is seventh, 30 points behind fourth-placed Moonee Valley.

Ballarat bowls

The Avenue put up a fight against ladder leader BMS, but still fell short in Ballarat District Bowls Association’s division 1. It was always going to be a tough ask for the ninth-placed Avenue, but that didn’t stop the side making a contest of it. Bill Hawken’s rink had

an impressive 28-18 win, while Dino Boratto came away with a draw in the 97 (15)-87 (3) loss.

In west A1, Melton South Primary School made 161 against Williamstown Imperials in west A1. Nathan Waites top scored for the Royals with 38. In reply, the Imperials were 1-12 at stumps. Melton Centrals returned to the winners’ list without a ball being bowled after Bottom side County West forfeited. In other results, Napoleons-Sebastopol recorded a reverse outright win against Brown Hill. After being bowled out for 54 chasing Brown Hill’s 75, Napoleons-Sebastopol turned it around in the second innings.

Needing 164 for victory, NapoleonsSebastopol made 5-169. Mt Clear recorded an outright win against East Ballarat, while North Ballarat had a good win against Golden Point.

Darley didn’t get anywhere near Wendouree’s run total on Saturday, but Lions’ coach Heath Pritchard was still able to take some positives out of the loss. The Lions were on the back foot of the Ballarat Cricket Association clash from the start, after a poor fielding display the previous week. Wendouree had put on a massive 4-307 on day one, and the Lions needed everything to go their way on Saturday. It didn’t … with the Lions reaching 8-223. They started well and were 1-76, but this quickly became 5-97. The ninth wicket partnership of 64 between Hayden Jamieson and David Hoey pushed the Lions’ score past 200. Jamieson, in his first hit in the top side for the season, top-scored with 50 not out. And eight Lions batsmen scored between 12 and 50. Lions’ skipper Heath Pritchard said it had been a frustrating day with the bat, compounding the first day’s effort. “The damage was done on the first day of the match,” he said. “We didn’t hold our catches and the ground fielding wasn’t good. “We actually batted okay (on Saturday). We got a lot of starts, but no-one could go on with it. We needed someone to get a big score, but it didn’t happen. “The pleasing thing is I don’t think we batted anywhere near as well as we can and still made 223,” Pritchard said. “We know if we bat well, we can match it with the best teams.” The loss means the Lions slip from top spot to third on the ladder, with Mt Clear going to the top on the back of its outright win. Only three points now separates the top four, with fifth-placed Golden Point a further six points behind. The fight for finals resembles last season, when an outright win and a Lions’ loss put the Lions out of the contest in the final round. This is not a scenario Pritchard wants repeated. “We’ve got North Ballarat, then the bye and finish with East Ballarat. We get six points for the bye and a few of the sides around us play

hey might not admit this publicly, but most self-respecting sports car manufacturers have a Porsche Boxster tucked away at their test grounds. Why? Because it is the benchmark. It might not be the most powerful, fastest or most jaw-dropping drop-top going around, but it is arguably the most cohesive, albeit at a price north of $100,000. With a mid-mounted engine, taut body and a chassis tuned like a Stradivarius, the Boxster is pure sports car, bonded as a complete package for driving excellence. The latest iteration swaps the traditional six-cylinder horizontally opposed normally aspirated engine for a new turbo-charged four-cylinder “boxer”. Have no fear, the new, smaller but feistier 2.0-litre engine in the entry-level Boxster (the Boxster S gets a 2.5-litre version) delivers on all fronts, and even sounds splendid with the optional $4990 (phew!) sports exhaust.

little yoga experience helps one slip behind the wheel of this little darling, so snug and low to the ground that it puts you in mind of a racing car – except, of course, that this machine comes with a plush level of comfort. The cabin shows off Porsche heritage in small round driver dials, perhaps too small for the sat-nav tucked behind the steering wheel. We’re missing inclusions I expected at this level, such as a rear-vision camera, keyless entry and keyless start. As for storage, front and rear boots provide enough luggage space for a motoring holiday, yet there’s a lack of handy places for your water bottle, sunglasses and small change in the cabin. With the Boxster straining at the leash, we shook off the cobwebs and let it find its comfort zone with a spin down the coast. Roll on summer, when the easy one-switch roof lowering and raising will get a workout, undoubtedly turning a few more heads.
