In daffodils, hope blooms

Not only does the daffodil herald the beginning of spring, it’s seen as an international symbol of hope for people affected by cancer. This year is the 30th anniversary of the Cancer Council’s annual daffodil campaign which raises money for research, prevention programs and support services. Since its inception in 1986, more than $137 million has been raised nationally through Daffodil Day. In that time, the five-year cancer survival rate has increased by about 20 per cent, a support line has been created (13 11 20), and there are many new support services and programs. To coincide with Daffodil Day this year, Janice Le Sueur will fill her florist shop with more than 600 of the sunny blooms. She hopes the scale of her order will match the significance of the Cancer Council’s celebration this year. Daffodil Day will be celebrated in Australia on Friday, August 26. Alexandra Laskie

Melton ‘battleground’ fear By Sumeyya Ilanbey There are fears Melton will be turned into a battleground next month when anti-Islam and anti-racist groups descend on the town. Anti-Islam group True Blue Crew will hold a rally in High Street on August 28. Two anti-racist groups, including No Room for Racism, are considering a counter rally. Melton MP Don Nardella said True Blue Crew was “breeding fear”, dividing communities and creating conflict in the town. “These people have no affinity to Melton,” he said. “They don’t care about Melton; they don’t

care about families and they don’t care about the people who live here. “All they want to do is spread their fear and hate and bile and vitriol and racism here in Melton and they should stay home.” True Blue Crew says it will rally against “the rise of Islam in Melton”, citing the Islamic school, a planned mosque and the Iqra Village. On a Facebook page rally organisers said that Melton “will do whatever is required to prevent Islamic ideology from taking hold”. But Mr Nardella said there had been no problems at the Islamic School, based at Victoria University’s Melton campus.

“Nobody’s been radicalised; God hasn’t smitten the good folk of Melton South there; the devil hasn’t risen all the dead to take over the world,” Mr Nardella said. “The kids are learning, the teachers are teaching and the families are happy their kids are getting the best education they can.” A spokesman for the anti-racist groups, Chris Peterson, said his group would make a decision this week on whether to hold a counter rally. Superintendent Lisa Hardeman said Victoria Police was aware of the True Blue Crew rally and there would be a strong police presence,

including a range of specialist units from the mounted branch, police operational response team, highway patrol and air wing. Police will search for weapons. “We understand people have a right to protest peacefully, but urging violence and hatred within our community is not a form of free speech and will not be tolerated,” Superintendent Hardeman said. She urged parents to consider if it was appropriate for children to attend the rally. Melton council chief executive Kel Tori said council was aware of the rally, but had not received an application for a permit.

Police move on ‘invasion’ fears By Sumeyya Ilanbey Police have moved to reassure residents they are making a dent in aggravated burglaries happening across the west. Senior Sergeant Trevor King said police have ramped up patrols in response to reports of teenagers, some as young as 13, involved in stealing cars, breaking into homes and terrorising people across the western suburbs. He said Operation Cosmas – a taskforce set up to investigate the current spate of home invasions, carjackings and other aggravated

burglary offences – had arrested more than 75 people since May. Seven Melton and two Brimbank teenagers have been charged and remanded in custody in relation to an armed robbery and carjacking in St Albans last week. The rise in crime has reignited resident calls for a greater police presence. Hundreds of people are expected to rally next month near the Caroline Springs police station, calling on the state government and Victoria Police chief commissioner to heed their concerns.

Rally organiser Maria Kerr says community groups, victims and police union boss Ron Iddles will address the rally, from 11am on Saturday, August 13. “Our goal is to get media attention, to get the community together and show we’re united,” Ms Kerr said. It’s an ongoing call for action by residents more than 150 people gathered at Hillside last week looking for answers from police. “You’re undermanned and we understand that, and it is what it is,” one resident said at Hillside.

“We can’t do anything about that and we’re all frustrated. We [feel like] sitting ducks.” Almost 6000 people joined a recently formed Neighbourhood Watch Facebook group, posting about “suspicious-looking” cars and offering suggestions to neighbours. It has been reported that frustrated residents are patrolling streets and sleeping with baseball bats and knives beside their beds. In response, police said they were concerned residents were becoming vigilantes. Police advised people to call triple-0 immediately if they saw something suspicious.

Court refuses jail appeal

The Catholic Regional College students are taking part in the school’s annual winter sleepout next month to raise awareness of and money for homelessness services. One Voice and Hope Street representatives will speak on the night about the work they do, reminding students “anyone at any time could

find themselves in similar circumstances”, social justice co-ordinator Margaret Rowe-Watts said. Students and staff will meet at the school one night next month to share a meal similar to those available at charity soup kitchens. “During the night, the students will spend some time outside in private reflection while experiencing the cold and loneliness felt by those who are homeless,” Ms Rowe-Watts said.

“For our students, it is usually a huge awakening, a realisation that homelessness affects all aspects of our community.” She said the winter sleepout was one of many initiatives the school was taking part in to put faith into action and being “of service to our wider community”. A court of appeals judge has recognised that a 23-year-old man jailed for armed robbery faces a real danger of becoming institutionalised. However Justice Phillip Priest this month denied Adam Poidevin’s appeal against his four-year sentence describing Poidevin’s criminal history as “appalling”. In May Poidevin was sentenced to four years jail, minus 613 days of pre-sentence detention, for a number of serious offences and breaching a community correction order including failing to report as directed, failing to undergo treatment, and failing to attend specified appointments. The court heard the offences were committed “almost immediately” after Poidevin was released from jail after serving 20 months for armed robbery, threatening to inflict serious injury and theft in Melton in 2013. Poidevin’s lawyers argued four years jail was excessive. They said their client should be seen as a young man with a significant intellectual disability who needed disability support. But Justice Priest said Poidevin had been warned the court would “throw away the key” if he did not comply with the terms of the community order. “That is obviously troubling, as the danger of institutionalisation is very real”. He said Poidevin has had leniency extended to him in the past and “undeterred, he re-offended almost at once”. Poidevin will be eligible for parole in two years. Sumeyya Ilanbey

All clear for new Plumpton school By Sumeyya Ilanbey Construction of the new Taylors Hill Secondary College at Plumpton will start next year. The state government is finalising the purchase of land at 135 City Vista Court for a years 7-12 secondary school. The school is due to open for the 2018 school year, with the construction tenders to go out soon, an education department spokesman said. “The Victorian government allocated $12 million in the last budget for construction of the new Taylors Hill Secondary College,” he said.

“It is one of 42 new schools the government is delivering across the state, following a record investment in school infrastructure.” At a special council meeting earlier this month, Melton council removed planning restrictions from the City Vista Court site so the education department could acquire the land. In their report to the meeting, council officers stated that removing the restrictions was “warranted”. “Ending of the agreements will pave the way for the land to become unencumbered, and will result in the acquisition of the land by the Department of Education and Training for

the purpose of a state secondary school in this fast-growing area,” the report states. The site is located in the Taylors Hill West precinct structure plan area. The land is 6.12 hectares, with 2.19 hectares of the site to be used for a government school, and 2.75 hectares to be used for a non-governmental education facility. The remaining 1.18 hectares will be used for waterway, drainage and conservation areas. Council officers told the meeting a small portion of the land was considered to be of “cultural heritage sensitivity”. It had been subject to “significant ground disturbance”, their report stated, and therefore

did not require a cultural heritage management plan. Prior to the 2014 election, the state government made a commitment for a years 10-12 senior college. But Sydenham MP Natalie Hutchins said, after talking to the community, it was “evident” a years 7-12 school was needed. “The new secondary school at Taylors Hill will meet the needs of our growing community, and give local families greater peace of mind,” she said. “By investing locally, the Victorian Labor Government is making sure every community in Victoria has great schools and every child gets the chance to succeed.”

Party philosophy 101 Birthday boy Dudley Duncan was 101 last Thursday, celebrating the milestone with five generations of his family. The Burnside Retirement Village resident credits his longevity to “a pretty wild life” he led when he was younger – partying, drinking and smoking. And also to a loving family of two children, six grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild – nine-month-old Laikyn. Mr Duncan, born during the First World War, served in the army for eight years from 1940 and married his wife, Gwen, in the same year. He lived in Glenroy for more than 30 years before moving to Burnside six years ago. “I’ve always been very determined to do something, to succeed,” he said. “Was life hard

back then? I suppose it was, yeah. “But when you’re in the army, you make life what it is.” Gwen passed away in 2002 after 62 years of marriage. Mr Duncan says he still misses her and describes their relationship as having been “incredibly close”. Sumeyya Ilanbey

A Bacchus Marsh man has been remanded in custody in relation to a crime spree in the western suburbs. The 28-year-old is charged with the theft of six vehicles from Avis Rental Cars, High Street, Melton during the Anzac Day long weekend. He has also been charged with other thefts of motor cars, petrol thefts, refusing to stop for police and dangerous driving in the Melton and Bacchus Marsh areas and committing three armed robberies in the Truganina area between July 10 and 11.

Hold-ups suspect remanded

A 20-year-old Melton man has been charged in relation to an attempted robbery and armed robbery at takeaway stores. The man is alleged to have held up a fish and chip shop and a High Street pizza shop on July 18. He has been remanded in custody.

Book worm’s riding high Dreams do come true at Sydenham-Hillside Primary School. One pupil’s obsession with the works of popular children’s author Bernadette Kelly has resulted in a surprise visit to the school by the Riding High author last Wednesday. Kelly’s visit was organised in secret by teacher Sonia Seeger, who wrote to the Pony Patch creator asking if she’d be willing to pass on some of her wisdom to students. More than 150 grade one and two pupils were treated to the surprise visit at the Hillside campus, which was perfect timing as they

prepare to celebrate Book Week next month. Mrs Seeger said the session went well and the students were excited to meet a real author. But it was an extra special occasion for Sabrina, who, according to Mrs Seeger, is “mesmerised” by one of Kelly’s fictional characters. Sabrina not only got to meet her favourite author but now has a signed copy of her book. “Bernadette was overwhelmed with the amount of pre-ordered books,” she said. Ben Cameron

Townhouse plan for soccer ground By Ben Cameron A plan to transform the home of a former National Soccer League team into 150 townhouses is closer to being realised. Brimbank council has asked Planning Minister Dick Wynne to approve the rezoning of Chaplin Reserve, on Anderson Road, from special use to residential. The state government sold the 2.2 hectare site to Sunshine George Cross soccer club nearly 20 years ago. The club now plays in the National Premier League and intends to sell the land for a

private development and relocate to Taylors Hill, on the corner of Taylors Road and City Vista Court. Club president Jamie Chetcuti said further plans for their new “state-of-the-art” ground would be released in four to five weeks. He said the new site would be a home base to both junior and senior teams. The club will play its final match at Chaplin Reserve, on August 27. Chetcuti said the old ground had held about 15,000 people when Sunshine George Cross was an NSL regular. “We had a big supporter base back then,”

he said. “It’s sad we’re leaving, but exciting times lie ahead. “We have a very secure future for bigger and better things to come. “This club has had a lot of the biggest [soccer] names go through Chaplin Reserve … the likes of Kevin Muscat, Paul Trimboli, Damien Mori.”

The club was founded by Maltese immigrants in March 1947. Chetcuti called on past and present players and supporters to turn out to farewell Chaplin Reserve on August 27. The state government has agreed to remove a zoning restriction which stipulates the site be used only as a private sports ground – as long as it receives payment for the difference between the site’s value as a private sports ground and its value as a residential development site. The planning minister did not respond to Star Weekly’s request for a comment.

Warriors on the warpath When Liam Devlin joined the Melton Rugby Union Club last year, it was all but dead. The club had only a handful of members and was struggling to field junior and senior teams. Twelve months later, it has nine teams and a rejuvenated committee committed to the Warriors’ future. Mr Devlin, the club’s vice-president, describes the turnaround as a “huge achievement”. “I’ve always felt as though rugby’s done a lot for me and I owe a lot to rugby,” he said. Mr Devlin, who has been playing rugby union for almost two decades, says he loves the game’s inclusiveness. “There are positions designed for people who have good ball control, positions for people who are a little bit bigger,” he said. “It really caters for any person of any shape, size or weight.” The 29-year-old, who teaches grades 5 and 6 at Melton West Primary School during the

day, is dedicating most of his spare time to the Melton rugby club. Last week, he was nominated for a HSBC volunteer of the year award, putting him in the running to win $10,000 for his beloved Warriors. Mr Devlin says he’s chuffed to have been nominated. “I hope over the next couple of years the club takes full swing and I can put my feet in the air and enjoy the successes,” he said. Festival for creatives Budding writers and bookworms can get into the minds of their favourite authors at Melton council’s inaugural literary festival. A range of events will include art exhibitions, indigenous storytimes and drama performances at the 12-day Write On. Read On. Melton City Word Fest when it kicks off on Saturday, August 13. Tell us more on tip bid: council By Sumeyya Ilanbey and Ben Cameron Brimbank council says its residents need a better understanding of the environmental impacts of a proposed tip expansion in Ravenhall. Officially objecting to Cleanaway’s planning permit application to expand the tip, the council is calling for more information on likely odour, dust and litter effects on neighbouring properties. The application proposes the expansion of the landfill operations by 311 hectares to the west and north-west of the existing landfill area, and the permit’s life to 2069. The council, which has no jurisdiction over the issue, is calling for an independent impact assessment report by an environmental auditor. “Any expansion of the Melbourne Regional Landfill [should not] be approved until such time as the off-site amenity impact to nearby residents is resolved, specifically in relation to odour, dust and litter,” a council report states. “The council is concerned about the expansion of landfill sites and the amenity impacts on surrounding land uses, particularly residential uses.” The council is also worried about dust emissions from trucks and wants to see a one-kilometre buffer zone between the tip and residential areas. “Of more concern is the proposal to approve a significant expansion to the landfill operation in the light of government policy which seeks to reduce Victoria’s reliance on using

landfills for waste disposal,” the report adds. Brimbank administrators chairman John Watson said there should be a renewed focus on new waste disposal technology “sooner rather than later”. His comments drew cheers from a handful of Stop The Tip protestors who sat in the gallery during last week’s council meeting.

Melton councillors have refused to support Cleanaway’s plans to expand the Ravenhall landfill, citing a lack of transparency and “absence of key information”. At a special meeting earlier this month, councillors unanimously voted to make a submission to Planning Minister Richard Wynne, who called in the planning application earlier this year, objecting to Cleanaway’s plans. In their report, council officers recommended council make a submission to the planning panel calling for a thorough investigation. But Melton mayor Kathy Majdlik moved an alternative recommendation, outlining council’s decision to refuse to support Cleanaway’s application based on a number of reasons, including ongoing odour issues, a lack of transparency and traffic issues. Councillors Sophie Ramsey, Lara Carli, Bob Turner, Nola Dunn, Myles Bentley and Renata Cugliari voted for the alternative recommendation, which was carried.

MY PLACE Vietnam veteran ‘Irish’ Kummerlowe has been president of the Bacchus Marsh RSL for four terms. He tells Sumeyya Ilanbey about life after the military. We moved here seven years ago from Glenroy. We drove by one day, on a Sunday, to come have a look around. We had some fish and chips at George’s, liked the area and decided we wanted to get away from the city. What’s your favourite thing about living in Moorabool? We’ve always lived in cities and when we came down here for a drive we liked the country life. It’s nice to see green and rolling hills, instead of buildings. What would you change about the area if you could?

How have war commemorations changed in recent decades? People are more aware … and centenaries are getting a lot more publicity. People are now taking it more seriously. We should remember and forget, in a sense, but the kids have got to know where they’re coming from and what’s happening around them. I think it’s important we remember servicemen and women. People are becoming more respectful and they understand what [veterans] are going through … It took me a long time to get over Vietnam, and a lot more fellas are coming back with the same problem. What’s your most interesting or inspiring war-related story from Bacchus Marsh?

If I was in charge, I’d put traffic lights at Grant Street. It took 20 minutes to get to the office this morning. I think the town is coming along … I don’t mind the increase in population, but we need to move with it.

I love history and Bacchus Marsh is full of it. A lot of the horses during the first world war came from this area. It’s a bit of a romantic old Wild West thing – horses mustered up and sent overseas. Bacchus Marsh was a central point for horses before they were headed off. People forget about the animals, but they were very important during WWI.

Where’s your favourite place to hang out?

What inspires you to work for RSL Legacy?

I really like the social clubs – I like the RSL. Bacchus Marsh is convenient to go north, south, east, west … it’s just nice here, the people are nice, and we like it. I like the country atmosphere – we’re losing it quickly, but it’s still good.

I love it – I love the work and I love meeting people. The whole team is volunteers and we help our friends and other servicemen and women to help them learn from our experiences. We want people to call in, to be able to help and pass on information.

Carrie’s project Sarah Harris talks to a tv star on a mission beanie – just like the one Greg used to wear to hide the scars of multiple surgeries – and appealed to colleagues to do the same the next day. Instantly, Carrie’s #beanies4braincancer was trending on Twitter. Between the glittering Paolo Sebastian gown and the incongruous headgear – the frock and the hard place – the three-time Logie winner had opened a window on her soul and the public, already adoring, loved her a little more. But it so nearly didn’t happen. Two days before the Logies, a friend voiced what all the punters were saying. “He said, ‘You know you are favourite to win, have you got a speech ready?’,” the 35-year-old recalls. “It was only after I got off the phone I thought, ‘Oh, maybe I will have to say something’. “So I sat there for an hour and I am, like, what am I going to talk about that is going to actually resonate with people? The brain cancer journey of Greg and I has shaped so much of my life. This [the Logie nomination] was about celebrating my work life, but my working life sat side by side a really challenging personal life. “My life isn’t all hair and make-up and red carpets. There have been some very challenging moments and I wanted to let people know at home they are not alone in whatever their challenge is. “The only reason I thought of the beanie was because I often think of Greg wearing one. So I called this factory about an hour and a half out of Melbourne and drove there and bought 100 beanies. I thought, if I don’t need them I will just

give them to the homeless.” Carrie told no one of her plan except her immediate family and one friend from work. “I just kept it to myself really and, to be honest, I didn’t know if I would have the strength to do it. Even as they made the announcement all I could think was, ‘Do I take the beanie or not, do I take the beanie or not?’. But I am so glad I did because what has happened since has just completely blown my mind.”

he golden girl of Australian television Carrie Bickmore is feeling a wee bit the goose. Weeks before the official launch of her range of fashion beanies to raise money for the cause closest to her heart, the much-loved TV presenter’s charitable foundation has all-but sold out of merchandise. “It has been a quick lesson in business,” the host of Network Ten’s The Project admits with a wry laugh. “Because I thought no one would buy one, I significantly under-ordered. I have just had to put in a new order and try and back-date product. I’m like, OK, this is quite the experience.” To be fair, becoming a beanie broker was not something the mother of two envisaged when she made her poignant and powerful speech accepting the 2015 Gold Logie for most popular personality on Australian television. Carrie captivated her peers attending the glittering industry event, and the watching nation when she used her acceptance speech to raise awareness of brain cancer. Her voice catching with emotion, she explained how the insidious disease not only stole her husband Greg Lange, but kills more people under the age of 40 than any other cancer and more children than any other disease. And she described how her family was irrevocably changed by brain cancer when Greg died two days after Christmas 2010 at age 34. “Over 10 years I watched him suffer multiple seizures a day, lose feeling down one side of his body, have his little three-year-old push him in his wheelchair because he couldn’t walk any more. He was an incredibly brave man … but he shouldn’t have had to go through that,” she said. She concluded the speech by donning a blue

Enrolling in journalism was one of those sliding-door moments, after she turned down a scholarship to study dance at the urging of a careers adviser. “At the time, the careers adviser saying ‘you will never make a career out of dance’ was probably an irresponsible thing to say because, one, she hadn’t seen me dance and, two, I don’t think you should ever tell somebody – even though their dream is big – that it is not possible. “At the same time I am always glad she did tell me because the path my life has led has been incredibly rewarding,” says Carrie, who enjoyed the more glamorous side of the action hosting So You Think You Can Dance Australia (series four in 2010). become a highly regarded educator, remarried, raising Carrie along with her two elder stepsisters, Claud and Ash. Carrie describes herself as “a bit of a dag” as a teen. “I was pretty conscientious. I did my homework and had it in on time and had assignments finished days before they needed to be. I know a lot of people assume I was incredibly outgoing at school, but I was a very different person to who I am now. I was very easily intimidated. I was intimidated by other girls who I am sure now were not terrifying, but in my mind were terrifying.” With the same diligence she exhibited during her years at the Anglican all-girls school Perth College, Carrie applied herself to uni and, well before graduating in 2000, she had a gig at Perth radio station 92.9FM. In 2001 Carrie and Greg moved to Melbourne where she joined Nova 100.3. Part of the motivation to move east was to be closer to her father Brian – a founding executive of Austereo and its longest-serving director until his retirement in 2004. The young couple’s future looked bright, but within months Greg was diagnosed with a brain tumour – its shadow lengthening as it recurred after treatment. “Greg would often say, ‘I just feel like there is no one that understands’. There wasn’t a brain cancer community that we, at least, could find or were tapped into. “We didn’t know any other people who were in their 20s who were going through this stuff. People in their 20s are supposed to be partying, travelling the world and we just didn’t do any of that. We never knew what each six-month scan was going to bring. It was a completely different

and an incredibly isolating experience, which bought us very close together but made life challenging in different ways. I was forced to grow up very quickly.” Through it all Carrie worked, just as she had seen her mother (Dr Jennie Bickmore-Brand) work. “I grew up with my mum, who was contributing so much and working so hard and that was what I saw as the norm. Every night she would make dinner and clean up and I would see her in the study for two hours trying to complete her doctorate. I think it took her eight or nine years while raising three girls to

But I’m OK with that. I can’t imagine it any other way. My past will always be with me, it shaped who I am today and I wouldn’t want a world where Greg wasn’t part of it. I look at my son and I see Greg. He is very much like him in different ways. “At the same time I am also very aware that I don’t want Ollie’s life to be heavy. I want it to still have the lightness of childhood. He was obviously dealt an extremely tough card very early on and I look at him now and I am so incredibly proud of who he is.” Now, on top of the demands of a high-profile job, the needs of her family and the pressure, as ambassador for beauty brand Garnier, to look good even when she steps out on a school run, there’s the business of the beanies. ‘L-plates’ for seniors Senior drivers are invited to attend the free Senior Drivers Expo at Hobsons Bay Civic Centre in Altona on Saturday August 20. The quarterly event is a RoadSafe Westgate Community Road Safety Council initiative and it’s open to retirees or those thinking about retirement.

Each participant gets a free, confidential once-over of their vehicle and advice from professionals such as VicRoads Roadworthy Officers on how to keep cars roadworthy.

The expo is aimed at giving seniors a free, confidential one-on-one session with one of three registered driving instructors.

“Each participant will receive tyre care advice from a VicRoads tyre expert and there’ll be the opportunity to ask highway patrol questions,” he said.

Jim Giddings, chairperson of RoadSafe Westgate, says organisers are committed to supporting older drivers and helping them stay behind the wheel for longer.

The free pack includes a reusable carry bag, a copy of the Senior Drivers Handbook and Driving in Victoria: Rules and Responsibilities.

“The Senior Driver Expo aims to give drivers current information on road safety, driving, prescribed medicines and road laws,” he said. “It’s an opportunity to get a free and confidential check on your driving technique to support you to drive away with confidence,” said Mr Giddings. “The sessions are designed to identify any ‘short cut’ habits drivers may have adopted over their years of driving.”

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir discovers a cosy new Japanese eatery in the west Shinmai Tasty is a new Japanese eatery at Edgewater, its fit-out done in time-honoured Japanese style. It is cosy, welcoming and feels comfortably lived in, despite its newness. The menu is a smartly devised two-page affair that runs from sushi and sashimi, through to salads, mains, bentos and dessert. There are many classic dishes to be had, and a few that appeal because they’re unusual. The dining room is long, with one whole wall adorned with two utterly gorgeous murals. Here’s a round-up of what Consider The Sauce tried over two visits: Miso soup ($3.50, served free with bentos) – very nice without being great, packed with lots of seaweed and very fine tofu cubes. Nasu kara chips ($8.50) – these proved a big hit and were, to my mind, stupendously fine. The tempura batter was very good and the long eggplant strands within cooked to molten, delicious perfection … served with mayo and dusted with chilli … a knockout! Edemame ($5) – salt-sprinkled soy beans were a nice snack before more substantial fare. Wagyu beef tataki ($16.50) – I am used to beef tataki variations being heavily marinated, very garlicky and served with a raw egg. This was something different and lighter, the beautiful beef having something of a citrus tang about it. I tasted neither the agedashi tofu ($9.50) nor the mixed tempura ($14.50), but the very happy recipient of both could hardly have been more emphatic in declaring both outright winners.

SHINMAI TASTY Address: 44 Edgewater Boulevard, Maribyrnong Phone: 9317 3830 The sushi fan orderers of the mixed sushi/ sashimi ($38) were a little underwhelmed. Big tick for the sashimi – “indifferent” the word used to describe the sushi. My soy udon chicken soup ($16.50) was superb, with super broth that was both delicate and robustly flavoured. Along with the fat, slippery noodles and a goodly amount of seaweed, right there in the middle was a whole chicken thigh – a first for me, that I can recall, in a lifetime of eating noodle soups. I wondered how I was going to eat it – but it was so beautifully cooked, not to mention supremely tasty, that I had no trouble getting the meat from the bones. Bentos of sashimi ($22.50), beef teriyaki ($20.50) chicken teriyaki ($19.50) and unagi (eel, $23.50) were all enjoyed. Green tea brulee – so creamy and scrumptious, and an outright bargain at $5.90. Not everything we tried at Shinmai Tasty unequivocally hit the spot … but some dishes did. We reckon this is a very welcome addition to the Japanese options available in the west. SPORT Still no wins, but things look brighter for Rams The wins may not be coming, but the improvement is definitely there for Rockbank in the Riddell District Football League. It has been a tough season for the Rams, but they continue to look at the positives they hope will set the club up long-term. Coach Gavin Sporle said the morale at the club was still high despite thumpings every week which have left the Rams winless on the bottom of the ladder. “The effort from the boys is still there and they don’t give up,” he said. “They’re playing out the games to the last quarter. “There are only benefits for the club long

term and there are still numbers at training and playing every week.” Sporle said that while the results may not show it, the Rams were improving by the week and they needed to do that for the rest of the season. “Defensively, a lot of the guys are a lot more accountable,” he said. “They still have to get better with the footy in hand and control the ball a bit better. “We’re just trying to make sure they improve across the course of the season.” The Rams had a bye at the weekend, with Sporle saying it was much needed, with plenty of sore bodies.

But two players who didn’t have the weekend off were Harley and Ricky Cameron, who played for VFL side Werribee’s development team. While the senior side may be without a win, the reserves side won for the first time this season, beating Lancefield in their last outing. “It was fantastic,” Sporle said. “I kept the [seniors] in the rooms until the reserves came in so they could also be part of the atmosphere. “They deserve to be a part of it, as they’re doing all the right things.” Sporle said the club had started looking ahead to next year. “We’ve had preliminary discussions and we

Cobras primed to strike By Tara Murray Bacchus Marsh may be playing finals for the first time since 2001, but the club is far from satisfied. In what is turning out to be one of the closest seasons in the Ballarat Football League in a long time, the second-placed Cobras rate their chances of September success as good as any one else’s, with four rounds remaining. Cobras’ president Adam Sutherland said while it was good to make finals again, it was only part of the job done. “It feels great, but we’re not satisfied,” he said. “The season is wide open and no-one jumps off the page as a flag favourite, with Lake Wendouree starting to lose a couple of games.” On Sunday, the Cobras easily accounted for East Point, winning 18.18 (126)-10.9 (69). “The scoreboard only blew out late,” Sutherland said. “The first half was really hard-fought, and East Point were really scrapping. “We couldn’t convert, which stopped us from winning by more.” Ruckman Daniel Burton was best on ground, while Hamish Coulton and Rhys McNay also played good games. Sutherland said a lot of the lower profile guys stood out. Damian Cupido and Declan Phyland were the stars up forward, kicking six and five goals respectively. The win, and the Lakers’ loss, means the gap at the top of the ladder is now only one game. Sutherland said the consistency of the side was the key to its rise up the ladder. “We’ve only played one bad quarter of football for the year, otherwise we’ve played some pretty consistent football. “Even when we’ve been beaten, we’ve still played some good football, but have been beaten by better teams. “Top spot has now opened up for us. Our destiny is in our own hands.” The Cobras are one of five sides with a bye next week. Sutherland said it couldn’t come at a better time. “We’ve got a few guys who are sore … “Matt Denham missed the weekend’s game, while Cameron Richardson has pretty much not played the second half the last two weeks. “The break will do them good.” While a finals spot is cemented for the Cobras, Darley and Melton still hang by a thread. Both sides suffered big losses on Saturday against sides that seem finals bound. The Devils were disappointing in their 22.15 (147)-8.3 (51) loss to Redan. The Bloods scored just one goal in the second half against Sunbury Lions, losing 13.16 (94)-6.6 (42). The margin of the loss meant the Devils fell behind Melton on percentage, with the Bloods now in that all important sixth spot. Clubs back Malmsbury, Kyneton move Malmsbury and Kyneton cricket clubs will field both senior and junior teams in Gisborne and District Cricket Association this season. As previously reported by Star Weekly Weekly, both clubs put in applications for their senior teams to join the competition this year. Last Monday night, current senior teams voted unanimously in favour of the move from Castlemaine and District Cricket Association. Malmsbury president Ed Kosmac said making the move to the GDCA made sense to provide a pathway from juniors through to seniors. Both clubs already have junior teams in the GDCA. “We had more than 90 per cent of members vote in favour of the move and now the clubs have supported it,” Kosmac said. “Geographically, it has been hard having the teams in two different competitions. “It was difficult when you’ve got parents driving their kids to games in the morning to then travel in a different direction to play themselves. “We had no pathway and were in no-man’s land. This will give us more freedom to grow our club.” Kosmac said Malmsbury is looking to field one junior and two senior teams next season. He said the club wants to attract new players, and the fact it is the only club in the association to have a turf wicket should make it an attractive place to play. “A lot of players love playing on turf, and they haven’t been able to in the GDCA,” Kosmac said. “There are a couple of clubs interested, but having them in place is a while off.” New GDCA president and former association secretary Rob McIntyre said the two clubs would bring the number of senior clubs to 20. He said it was good to continue to grow the competition at the northern end of the region. McIntyre said they would put options out about grading and what the structure may look like in the next week or so, before meeting to discuss these on August 15. Win ties up top-four spot Melton Thoroughbreds made sure of finishing in the top four of Big V men’s division 1 with a vital win over Warrnambool on Saturday. In a match which pitted second against fourth, the lower-placed side came out on top in the 85-76 win. It was an even first half, with the biggest margin a five-point lead to the Thoroughbreds early in the first quarter. The Seahawks hit back to take the lead but then the two sides traded baskets. The Thoroughbreds led by two points at the main break. The game opened up in the third quarter and the Thoroughbreds raced to a nine-point lead. The margin got out to a game-high 17 points midway through the last quarter before the Seahawks started to cut it back. But they were never able to get any closer than eight points. Stalwart’s love affair with hockey rolls on Ron Shadbolt didn’t think twice about stepping up and coaching his young daughters’ hockey team several decades ago. “They were five and six and to me it wasn’t difficult coaching them,” he said last week. “I slowly got more and more involved in coaching and continued on. I just love coaching and I’ve met some great people.” That early involvement set the seed for Shadbolt’s coaching career – and many years later, he has celebrated his 1000th game as coach across two clubs, Melton and Essendon. He celebrated his 1000th game as a player last year. Shadbolt said he would have laughed if you had told him 10 years ago that he would still be coaching at 62 and had played 1000 games. “I like to be involved and I love the sport

and the fact anyone from five to 75 can be involved,” he said. “There’s always a spot for people coaching and to be involved at a local club. “It’s a terrific way to relieve stress – it’s like a game of chess.” The Shadbolt name and Melton Hockey Club go hand in hand. Ron helped establish the club in the early 1980s and, apart from some time at Essendon Hockey Club, has been involved ever since. As well as playing and coaching, he is also the club’s president. He says his favourite moments have come watching his daughters play. He continues to coach them and all three have been involved in coaching teams at the club. “To see my daughters grow up and develop as people and players has been amazing,” he said.

Shadbolt is currently co-coach of the women’s sides with David Gorton. He said this year had been his most rewarding as coach, with the top two women’s sides looking set to play finals. He is also full of praise for Gorton. “The premier league squad has improved out of sight,” he said. “Dave has brought a lot of knowledge to the team. The competition we’re in is semi-professional and it requires two tacticians. I focus more on game day, while David is more about the skills.” Shadbolt said he planned to reduce his playing days in the next few years, but he has no plans to cut back on coaching. Tara Murray

Melton blows its chance By Tara Murray Melton Centrals’ disappointing season continued with a less-than-competitive performance against Woodend-Hesket on Saturday. Two of the Riddell District Football League ladder dwellers, both sides were looking for a rare win. Unfortunately for Centrals, they came up against a determined Hawks side who proved too good. The Hawks won 12.17 (89)-4.4 (28). Centrals coach Glenn Hopkins said it was one of his team’s more disappointing performances of the season. “I thought we had a chance, but the things that have been disappointing for us were probably more disappointing today,” he said. “Our will to make a contest and stay in a contest has been a bit of a problem for most of the season. 48 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ JULY 26, 2016

“We haven’t done that often enough and consistently enough all season.” The Hawks’ greater want of the ball set up a number of forays forward, something Centrals couldn’t match. “On a wet day like [Saturday], you’ve got to be able to really want the ball inside and we didn’t have that,” Hopkins said. “It comes back to winning the first ball [in contests] and then you’re going to be able to set up and find space and kick the ball well, like they did. “They set people away from contests and found space, which worked well for them.” Centrals’ loss was compounded by playing the last half with only two players on the bench. But Hopkins said that was no excuse for the way they played. “You’ve got to be able to step up and be versatile,” he said. “We need players who would step up and play in different positions and we haven’t to be able to do that.

“Whether you’re experienced or not, you have to do it. One or two injuries shouldn’t hamper how you play if the attitude is there.” Jonathan Ferri and Junior Oneone were named Centrals’ best in the loss. Hopkins said they would use the rest of the season to try to build for next year. It will mean players learning new positions. Oneone is one who has shown some glimpses in a number of positions. “Junior plays in the ruck in the thirds and he’s probably our best centre half-back,” Hopkins said. “He did all right up forward last week and we thought ‘what have we got to lose’. “We have to try the kids in different roles and give them more experience. We had three who had to play the under-18s and seniors and they are happy for the challenge. “They’ve been great and are role models for the older players with their attack on the ball and what they want to do with it.” Centrals have a bye this week.

The scoreboard made for unpleasant reading for the Western Jets when they went down by 100 points to Murray Bushrangers in the TAC Cup at Wangaratta on Saturday. The result alone – the Jets kicked just one goal to the Bushies’ 15 from 33 scoring shots – does not tell the whole story. The Jets were severely depleted, while the Bushrangers were almost at full strength, so there was likely to be only one outcome. “Our private school boys were out,” Jets coach Torin Baker told Star Weekly. “We also lost a number of boys through the week to the Sun Shield semi-finals who were involved with St Pat’s, Essendon Keilor and MacKillop, so they were pretty physical games. “We were missing about 13 or 14 players who you would say were in your best 25, so we were pretty short in terms of personnel and came up against a good team. “It was more about competing as much as we can, but that was a pretty tough job.” Such has been the tale of the season for the Jets. Injuries have piled up and absences have dented their chances in big games. With three games to go, the Jets remain a mathematical chance of reaching the finals, but they face familiar hurdles when they travel to play the ladder-leading Dandenong Stingrays on Saturday morning, with a number of key players unavailable. “It doesn’t get any easier,” Baker said. “It’s going to be another really strong challenge for us.” There is a silver lining to every dark cloud – the Jets had the chance on Saturday to blood youngsters Zak Butters and Jack Noonan. And there have also been opportunities to see who could stand tall for the Jets in the face of adversity. On that front, Nick Stuhldreier, Brodie Romensky, Oscar Junker and Rhys Bradley, did their reputations no harm. Baker said that against the Bushies, Stuhldreier had played one of his best games for the club. “He’s a bottom-ager and we’ve had him down for 28 possessions off the half-back and he spent a little bit of time in the midfield,” he said. Why are we driving it? Skoda has recently launched its all-new second-generation Superb range and we’re moving our way through the six different variants – three sedans and three wagons. This is the range-topping station wagon with the most powerful version of the 2.0-litre turbo four-cylinder engine and all-wheel drive transmission.

What we like First of all, the sheer amount of interior space offered by the Superb is almost unmatched for the price. It’s enough to question why anyone would need a modern soft-roader for suburban duties. While there’s plenty of room up front, there’s acres in the back seat for growing families and the boot is bigger than you’ll ever need to cart the weekly shopping or sport gear. Beyond that, there’s a bunch of clever storage features – rubbish bins in the door pockets, umbrellas in the sills and myriad solutions in the boot to keep things secure – as well as top-quality materials, funky green ambient lighting at night, Apple CarPlay connectivity and comfortable seats. The Superb drives really well, with good compliance over bumps, positive steering, solid brakes and the traction of all-wheel drive in slippery conditions. The engine has plenty of punch when tapping into its top-end, but cruises along nicely, too, thanks to low-down urgency from its turbo charger.

It’s all backed-up with the latest in electronic driver aids, including automated emergency braking, as well as nine airbags. What we dislike The biggest problem afflicting Skoda remains acceptance of the brand in Australia. While the $52,000-odd ask for the flagship wagon makes it a great buy, it doesn’t hold its value

as well as other European brands. Industry forecasts suggests the Superb will retain just 40 per cent of its value over the first three years of ownership, so take that into account during the purchasing decision. The recent Volkswagen Dieselgate scandal has also taken some wind out of Skoda, even though this latest Superb is not part of the emission-cheating recall.

7.3L/100km

As for the car itself, there’s very few gripes. But it’s debatable whether the flagship is worth the extra $10,000 over the base model Superb, which is just as spacious and drives just as well, even without all-wheel drive and with a less-powerful, 162kW motor. Would we buy it? Yes. The Superb is a very under-rated car that offers a genuinely clever, well-mannered and value-packed alternative to SUVs. It looks smart on the outside, is spacious on the inside and drives beautifully on the road. Just don’t expect it to be an easy sell when it comes time to trade up to something else in a few years time. – The Age
