Big issues for young minds

Social justice and mental health issues will be high on Victoria Vassallo’s agenda when she attends next month’s student congress. The year 12 Catholic Regional College Melton student is one of 15 student “executives” from around the state who will help lead the event hosted by the Victorian Student Representative Council at Melbourne University from July 6 to 8. The uni will host 180 secondary school students as they debate, decide and act on the issues that matter to them in all aspects of their education. Victoria says she’s excited about meeting other students, discussing issues and sharing ideas about the world during the three-day conference. “It’s really great that I’ll be attending as a student executive this year,” she says. “I believe I’ll bring a different perspective on the issues. I’m really passionate about social justice, and I’m looking forward to speaking with other students about this. “Mental health and wellbeing is another topic that’s very personal to me because I’ve been affected … it’s an issue that impacts everyone at some stage.” Esther Lauaki

Battle over ‘flood maps’ By Esther Lauaki Bacchus Marsh residents are fighting a proposed planning amendment which would label their properties “flood-prone”. Moorabool council last Wednesday considered submissions to a proposed Amendment C73, which would introduce flood controls to the Moorabool Planning Scheme based on three Melbourne Water flood study reports. The reports, completed in 2010 and 2011, mapped the flood potential of areas within the catchment of Werribee River, Lerderderg River and Little River using digital modelling undertaken over a number of years by water surveying company GHD.

Residents in those catchments, mostly in Bacchus Marsh and Darley, would have to declare their properties flood-prone before selling. Progress of the amendment was abandoned by Moorabool council at Wednesday’s special meeting and referred to a planning panel appointed by the planning ministry. Almost 100 residents filled Moorabool council chambers and spilled into the corridor at the meeting to hear and make submissions against the proposal. Darley resident Vivian Evans said her insurance premiums would soar to $780 if her property was declared flood-prone. “This amendment will affect our ability to afford insurance,” Ms Evans said. “Where will

I get $780 on an aged pension? Our properties will be devalued, but you can bet our rates will still go up.” Bacchus Marsh resident John Lucas said the floodplain maps showed flooding would be less than “gutter height” on his property. “One section of the floodplain map shows a flood-prone area surrounded by dry land with no indication of waterflow to the flood-prone area,” he said. “How can this be so?” Civil engineer David Caligari, a Bacchus Marsh resident, was among the objectors and said there were too many inaccuracies in the report to progress with Amendment C73. “GHD actually states that there are inaccuracies in all three of the models used to map the floodplain,” he said. “They identified

inaccuracies along the Werribee river.” Mr Caligari said a ground survey of his land found the modelling was out by at least 200mm. Cr Tom Sullivan voted against the motion to abandon the amendment because he believed there was sufficient evidence that flood controls were needed. “I say we don’t abandon it and get some ground truth [surveying] done,” he said. “It’s not going to go away. Floods happen in Bacchus Marsh and we can’t do anything about it. If you buy a house and aren’t told it’s flood-prone, how would you feel?” Melbourne Water integrated planning manager Chris Williams said the proposed planning amendment was to protect existing homes and businesses from flooding by placing appropriate controls on future developments.

When doctors told Taylah Bills and Jordan Hornesy their baby might not survive and asked whether they wanted to terminate the pregnancy, the young couple wasted no time declining. “It was a no-brainer,” Ms Bills says. “We’re going to fight for our baby’s life.” It’s been an upward battle ever since. Ms Bills gave birth to Ollie four months ago, but he’s been in an induced coma for most of the time since. The Bacchus Marsh trooper has had six open-heart surgeries, cardiac arrests, multiple blood clots, blood poisoning, a perforated bowel and blood transfusions. It never gets easier. “There are days when we think why did we put you through this, and we

just want to pick you up and take you far away from all the pain and the hurt,” Ms Bills says. “But there are also days when you have that big gorgeous smile on your face that lets us know you want to be here and you’re here to stay.” Ollie has a complex heart disease, meaning his heart is small and underdeveloped. At two months, he had a cardiac arrest and was resuscitated for 15 minutes. The family have been told three times to say their goodbyes to little Ollie, but each time he pushes through and fights harder, Ms Bills says. “He wasn’t meant to survive, but he did. He’s still in intensive care but is doing better than ever. He’ll need more surgeries and nothing’s certain, but he’s started to be a lot more alert. He smiles now.”

Life hasn’t been easy for the young parents, who are on a single income and have been staying at the Royal Children’s Hospital’s Ronald McDonald House at Parkville. Australian producer VIP Pet Foods is investigating after a Melton man found what he thought were pieces of wire in puppy food. Patrick Goudie, 21, bought a VIP Pet Foods’ Nature’s Goodness puppy roll from a Woolworths store in Melton early last week for his two staffy-cross-bullmastiff pups. Mr Goudie claims that after eating the food, two-year-old Rydah and seven-week-old Tyga fell ill, started vomiting and would not eat for the next two days. VIP Pet Foods chief operating officer Rex Devantier told Star Weekly that while the company was still investigating, he believed the black pieces found by Mr Goudie were nutgrass – a spiky, non-toxic weed found in gardens and lawns worldwide. Mr Devantier said that since being alerted by Woolworths, VIP Pet Foods had paid vet costs to assess Tyga and Rydah and was waiting for Mr Goudie to bring in pet food samples to assess. “The health and wellbeing of pets is our first priority,” Mr Devantier said. “We’ve received confirmation [from the vet check] that there’s no foreign [metal] objects present in the animal. “We have two critical control points in our dog food production line; the points are there to identify and reject foreign objects that are metallic.” Speaking to Star Weekly last week, Mr Goudie said he was afraid the black pieces were metal and would affect the health of his pets. “[Wednesday], one of the pups kept licking his lips,” Mr Goudie said. “I looked in his mouth and he had this black thing between his teeth. I didn’t know what it was, but when I cut up the puppy roll I saw more of it. “Since they ate the puppy roll, the two dogs have been chucking up. I love my dogs. My dogs are my everything; they’re my best friends. I’d

Sarah’s spirit in a special place It was a fitting birthday celebration for a woman who loved the colour pink and poetry, and wanted to “change the world”. Noelle Dickson launched Sarah’s Space – a support service for young people battling addictions – on what would have been her daughter Sarah Cafferkey’s 26th birthday. Dozens of people turned out to the Bacchus Marsh senior citizens’ hall on Monday, June 20, to unveil the space and remember Sarah, who struggled with an ice addiction before she was murdered in 2012. Ms Dickson said the new space had been three-and-a-half years in the making and would be a place for young people with drug and alcohol addictions to find support and information. Currently, only appointment-run counselling services are being offered at Sarah’s Space, but Ms Dickson hopes the service will grow in future. “We communicated a lot together [with Sarah] so in that respect it was good,” Ms Dickson told Star Weekly. “But I know there are a lot of children out there who can’t speak with their parents and don’t seek help. “That’s why I wanted this – to get them talking and know they’ve got somewhere to go for help if they can’t relate to their family and friends.” Speaking at the launch, Ms Dickson described her daughter as someone who would “capture your heart with joy and humour”. Dickson said, but she struggled with asthma, which took a toll on her physical and mental health. “She began drinking alcohol and smoking marijuana, which she thought helped ease the stress levels that triggered her asthma attacks, and this began her dependency on drugs,” Ms Dickson said. And in early 2012, Sarah was introduced to the drug ice. At first, she felt good, Ms Dickson said, but it wasn’t long before the drug took over. Shortly after, Sarah checked into rehab. “She had so much zest for life, and she was going to change the world and help her friends and others who were still using ice to get off it,” Ms Dickson said. She hopes now Sarah’s Space will be a place for young people to seek help without feeling judged. “To my beautiful daughter, Sarah, this is in honour of you. Grounded in care for kids For the past 26 years, Margaret Behan has devoted herself to helping make life better for children with disabilities. When Ms Behan moved to Brookfield in 1990, she decided to volunteer with the Riding for the Disabled Association’s Melton branch. It’s been a long journey and Ms Behan now has several awards, including this year’s citizen of the year, to her name. Earlier this month, she received a lifetime achievement award from the Health and Human Services Department for her 26 years of volunteering in the disability sector. “When you say it like that, it sounds like a long time,” Ms Behan says. “But it doesn’t feel like a long time. I’ve had a sense of enjoyment since day one.

“There’s a sense of achievement when you watch kids improve. We’ve had kids in wheelchairs who’ve gone through to compete at state and national-level competitions.” Ms Behan says that while she loves helping make someone else’s life better, her work has “grounded” her. “It certainly puts life in a good perspective,” she says. “You can’t feel sorry for yourself when you see these kids with disabilities restricted but achieving things. “It gives you a grounding for life, and that’s probably the best thing.” For more information about the Riding for the Disabled Association, call 9258 4730. Taxing time for accountant By Sumeyya Ilanbey A small-business owner claims his business is being “destroyed” by a $13 million project that’s closed off a busy Melton thoroughfare. Michael Kirby, of XO Accounting, told Star Weekly his business had been “completely shut off from the world” as Melton council carried out works for stage two of the Pride of Melton project, which includes upgrades to the streetscape in Palmerston Street, renovation of the amphitheatre and footpath installation. Works started last month and are expected to be finished by the end of the year.

Mr Kirby said this was the busiest time for his business, but he had made two staff redundant and he expected to lose at least $70,000 in income as a result of the works. “I understand council wants to beautify the area and I applaud them, but … I can’t see why they needed to do this during this period of [tax] time,” Mr Kirby said. “It’s stung a little bit because I’m trying to employ local people. We’re a fixture of the community and I think we’ve been treated unfairly. You try to do the right thing, support the council and bring business to Melton, and this is the way we’ve been treated.”

Mr Kirby said this year’s blow to business followed a similar experience last year when Palmerston Street was partially blocked off for construction of nearby taxi ranks. He said clients were having trouble finding the entrance to his business, and would-be clients weren’t aware of XO Accounting’s presence. “We’d like to say we’re still open for business and any support we can get from the community would be much appreciated,” he said. Melton council’s acting operations manager, Les Stokes, said the council had held one-on-one

or small group information sessions and public drop-in sessions before the works started. “The timing of the delivery of works was primarily dictated by the funding requirements of the Australian and Victorian governments, who are providing funding that accounts for two-thirds of the Melton Town Centre redevelopment project costs,” Mr Stokes said. “Another factor in scheduling the works is that it’s anticipated the current stage of redevelopment will be completed in time for the Christmas and New Year festive season, and will allow residents to enjoy the new outdoor space in finer weather.”

Green shoots of thanks Benny Sebastian has been itching to “do something” for Australia since he migrated from southern India almost a decade ago. For Mr Sebastian, president of western suburbs Kerala expatriot community group Utsav Malayalee Samaj, that means improving the environment. “When we thought of doing something for this country we live in, we thought the environment would be the best place to initiate action,” he said. “It’s the surroundings we live in, the earth we finally return to and the air we breathe. “Working to improve the health of the environment is the best opportunity to contribute to the good of this country.”

The group, made up of members of the Keralite community, has been beautifying Kororoit Creek in Caroline Springs, weeding, planting and maintaining the creek bed. “We go there every week and ensure the plants are looked after,” Mr Sebastian said, “and we have a high rate of plant survival.” Earlier this month, Utsav Malayalee Samaj received a $1250 grant from Melton council to help its Kororoit Creek work. Water supply switched

Melton residents may notice a change in their drinking water over coming weeks as Western Water switches over to the Melbourne supply system. The Merrimu Reservoir, which usually supplies Melton, Melton South, Eynesbury, Hopetoun Park, Rockbank, Plumpton, Kurunjang and Toolern Vale, has dropped to around nine per cent of capacity following the third-hottest Victorian summer on record, general manager Graham Holt said. New suburbs on drawing board By Sumeyya Ilanbey Land surrounding an old goldfields route near Rockbank will soon be transformed to make way for two new “grand” suburbs expected to house more than 55,000 people. The state government last week released Precinct Structure Plans for the two suburbs, which will be between Caroline Springs and the emerging suburb of Rockbank North. The new suburbs are expected to cater for Melbourne’s booming population and the demand for affordable housing in the western suburbs.

Metropolitan Planning Authority (MPA) chief executive Peter Seamer said the new suburbs would be enhanced and characterised by large open spaces. “Our growth areas will be home to a significant amount of Victoria’s future population and we need to plan for these communities to have access to jobs, services and great open space,” Mr Seamer said. “The MPA is committed to providing affordable housing choice for all Victorians in urban renewal areas and the established and new suburbs of Melbourne.” The area, spanning almost 2000 hectares, could, according to the MPA, provide up to

14,000 post-construction jobs, have 10 schools and a town centre accessible by the former Beattys Road goldfields route and close to the Caroline Spring train station. Hume Drive will be extended to connect with Tarletons Road in the west and to connect the new suburbs to Taylors Hill West. According to the MPA, the state government is expected to reap more than $180 million in developer levies, while Melton council is expected to receive more than $385 million. Natural landscape features, including local plants and native grasslands, will be maintained.

Melton council city design, strategy and environment manager Laura-Jo Mellan said that while the new suburbs would help create jobs, state and federal governments needed to invest in infrastructure needs. “The challenge is to ensure that required infrastructure – such as the future Hopkins Road upgrade, upgrades of Melton Highway and the Western Freeway, and the delivery of the planned Kororoit Regional Park, along with investment in schools and community facilities – is delivered in a timely way,” Ms Mellan said. Tribute a real knit fit Knitted poppies will adorn the trees of Bacchus Marsh’s Avenue of Honour in two years’ time to commemorate 100 years since its planting. The Bacchus Marsh RSL ladies auxilliary is calling on avid knitters and crocheters to help create 3000 poppies for the centenary of the Bacchus Marsh Avenue of Honour on August 10, 2018. President Bev Kummerlowe says the avenue will be closed off on the day to mark the momentous occasion. “School children from the district schools [will] place a wreath of knitted poppies on every tree in the Avenue of Honour,” Ms Kummerlowe said. “Just like on the 10th of August, 1918, a bugle will sound and a ceremony will be held. “We are asking for volunteers in the community to help us knit 3000 poppies to

Melton a catch for Sydneysiders By Christina Zhou, Domain Canny Sydney investors have the Melton property market in their crosshairs. As one of Melbourne’s last affordable property frontiers, Melton is attracting growing interest from interstate buyers. Local agents have confirmed a spike in Sydneysiders looking for value, but property experts are divided about the area. Sydney buyers’ agent Victor Kumar, director of Right Property Group, saw Melton as Sydney’s Mount Druitt. Mr Kumar had been hunting established properties close to Melton’s CBD for two-and-a-half years, but last week he said he would not have bought here five years ago. There was a strong demographic shift happening that most people were not noticing, he said. People sitting on $500,000-plus rundown fibro homes in Sunshine were selling up and moving to house and land packages in and around Melton. “They’re getting a brand new house on decent-sized land – perhaps not as big as their land in Sunshine – and they’ve still got change left over,” he said. “In the past two years, there’s been a juice bar spring up; there’s a couple of better cafes so slowly the lifestyle culture is changing.” Strata manager-turned-propertyinvestment-adviser Luke Moroney added an original three-bedroom Melton South house to his investment portfolio last May for $190,000. After a renovation, he’s now receiving $270 a week in rent – which means it’s slightly

positively geared. Mr Moroney said there was potential, because of its affordability, for Melton to become a western hub for Melbourne. Joe Mavrikos, of Hocking Stuart Melton, said the market was flooded with interstate buyers … and some were even buying sites unseen. “The value is crazy … I don’t think it’s going to last that long if everyone catches on,” he said.

Barry Plant Melton agent Ned Nikolic said the number of Sydney investors hunting in the Melton area had doubled over the past six months. Established houses near the train station and shopping centre had better capital growth potential than newer ones further out. But Melbourne buyers’ agent Cate Bakos said she would strongly advise investors to reconsider if they wanted to buy in Melton. She understood why Melton would seem exciting on paper for those unfamiliar with Melbourne. “My biggest issue with Melton is that it’s a long way away and surrounded by areas that are still offering house and land packages,” Ms Bakos said. Melton’s median house price grew just 0.1 per cent to $265,250 over the year to March 31, Domain Group data shows. Besides Melton and Melton South, investors are also buying in nearby Kurunjang and Brookfield.

A study in conservation Students at Springside K-9 College have gone wild for conservation. Year 6 students worked with Melton council on raising awareness of their local grasslands as part of their recent environmental studies. Teacher Trish Wan said the students were inspired by an environmental educator from the Melton council. “We wanted to work jointly on improving and increasing local community understanding of the local grasslands,” Ms Wan said. “In particular, we have focused on the grasslands opposite the front of our college. “We’ve been fascinated to learn that, in fact, this land has many protected species of

wildflower and that the council takes a lot of care of the area with litter removal, spraying of weeds, and planting. “Our project began with a survey to examine our understanding of the grasslands. We found that we knew least about wildflowers and what the land used to look like. “Students then chose an area of personal interest.” Students planted wildflowers to restore a corner of the grasslands nearest the college and raised money for the Keralian Indian expatriot group Utsav Malayalee Samaj’s Trees for Life project along Kororoit Creek. A winning merger Against reports of “skyrocketing” domestic violence in Brimbank, the merger of two Victoria Police family violence units has led to fewer repeat offenders in the area, according to a senior policewoman. The Crime Statistics Agency’s latest statistics for the year to March 31 reveal a 16.1 per cent annual rise in the number of family violence incidents reported to Brimbank police. But Senior Sergeant Helen Chugg, who co-ordinates the newly created family violence unit at Caroline Springs, said she had witnessed a recent reduction in the percentage of recidivist family violence offenders. In March, Senior Sergeant Chugg had the Keilor Downs and Melton family violence units co-located to Caroline Springs to deal with an increasing caseload. The team deals with,

on average, more than 400 family violence incidents a month. Senior Sergeant Chugg said that since the merger, the number of repeat family violence offenders had gone down because police had been able to engage more closely with offenders. Chief executive of Women’s Health West Robyn Gregory said the new Caroline Springs family violence unit had meant better management of high-risk cases. “The family violence referrals from police had skyrocketed, she said, with 1122 referrals in May for the western metro region. “ She said the trend could be due to factors including more public discourse that family violence was unacceptable. Victoria’s Police Minister Lisa Neville says Melton’s spiralling crime rate is causing her concern. “We understand people are genuinely concerned, particularly with increases in theft of motor vehicles and burglary offences,” she told Star Weekly. In the state upper house last week, Western Victoria MP Joshua Morris said Melton faced a “crime crisis” after new data revealed a 17 per cent increase in the 12 months to March 31. “As we all know, Melton is a very fast-growing area and these are quite shocking crime figures,” Mr Morris said. “It’s evident from these numbers that there certainly is a crime crisis in Melton. “Families who have a right to feel safe in their own communities have not got that luxury in Melton.” Mr Morris acknowledged the “great work” of Melton police but said “they can only do the work they can with the resources they are given”. Police Association secretary Ron Iddles said the state government and Victoria Police must accept there was a problem. “Most crimes, but especially propertyrelated crime, can be prevented,” Mr Iddles said. “A visible police presence must be restored.” Ms Neville said she was working with Victoria Police to reverse the upward crime trend. “That’s why we have funded an additional 400 police.” Sumeyya Ilanbey

Federal Labor has promised to fund a multimillion-dollar agricultural hub at Parwan if it wins this weekend’s election. Earlier this year, Moorabool chief executive Rob Croxford and mayor Allan Comrie pitched the Parwan employment precinct – with an expected 1200 jobs – to the federal government. Land for the project has been identified, but the council needs federal support to get it going. Ballarat MP Catherine King visited Parwan on Sunday to announce federal Labor would invest $1.5 million in the first stage, which includes an 8.4-kilometre gas pipeline to the Tilleys Road site. The precinct could house abattoirs, bulk food distributors, saleyards and hydroponic glasshouses, and give Parwan and Moorabool a vitally needed jobs and economic boost. Businesses currently at the site include a mushroom grower, a chicken farm, a quarantine facility and logistics depot. “We want people to be able to stay, work and live within Bacchus Marsh and the Moorabool shire without having to commute as much,” Ms King said, adding the funding would be “immediately” released if Labor was elected, although she would not identify a timeline. Moorabool council hopes extending the gas pipeline from South Maddingley Road to the new precinct will help businesses grow and encourage new ones or relocation. East Moorabool ward councillor John Spain said council hoped the state government, local businesses and gas companies would come on board with the employment precinct. “It’s important because it’s local jobs. Twothirds of our workforce travel outside the shire, which means they’re away for 12 to 13 hours a day. They’re excluded socially.”

Kangatraining national team leader Sarah Tarrant said the accolade was a great achievement for the program, which started classes in Melton in March. “I’m so proud of our Kangatraining team – it just goes to show how important this program has been to mums and bubs all over Australia,” she said. Caroline Springs trainer Mercia Pretorius said Kangatraining was more than just a workout. “It’s perfect for allowing mothers to get out of the house and socialise and exercise with their babies,” she said. MY PLACE Rob Leslie is on a mission to welcome people to Ballan. The church leader has formed a group to welcome refugees to Moorabool. He speaks to Esther Lauaki. We moved to Ballan because it was a lovely small town in a great location. Many years afterwards I discovered that some of my ancestors, the Andrews, had settled here in the 1860s and owned a farm on the Ballan-Greendale Road. How long have you lived in the area? My wife Sally and I moved to Ballan in 1994 from Melbourne, more than 20 years ago. I happened to be driving through Ballan to drop off one of my older children in Daylesford and saw a very run-down old bluestone house for sale. Sally was in Thailand at the time and I sent her some photos. A few weeks later I picked her up from the airport and we drove to Ballan to see our new house. Luckily she liked it! Tell me about your community involvement? For many years I worked full-time in Melbourne for an organisation that provides housing for people who have experienced homelessness. This didn’t leave much time to be involved locally. This year, I’m doing part-time consultancy work and have a bit more time. I have been involved for many years in the local Uniting Church. What made you want to host the Refugee Realities event? A small group of us started meeting, to think about how we might respond locally to refugees … and actually welcome some refugee families into the Ballan community and provide

practical support. In the shorter term, we wanted to educate ourselves … so we thought a Refugee Week event would be a good start. Why do you feel Ballan would be a good community to host refugees? At a practical level, Ballan is well located and has good access to health services, schools, and employment opportunities. It also has good access to public transport. Just as importantly, the Ballan community has shown it can be very welcoming and generous to people from diverse backgrounds. What do you think people can learn from the stories of refugees? That underneath all the superficial differences, people are pretty much the same. We all want our families to be able to grow up in a safe, secure community where they can get a good education and make a contribution. Refugees are people who have shown tremendous courage in escaping from violence in their own countries for the sake of their families. We should be proud to have them here. What do you love about Ballan? I love the fact that it’s almost impossible to walk down the main street without bumping into someone you know. I also love that it only takes a short time to get to beautiful places like the Brisbane Ranges National Park. Probably the thing I most love is that there seems to be so many people in Ballan who are quietly kind and generous.

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir takes in the west’s swish new Greek eatery … After a long gestation, the new George Calombaris establishment at Williamstown is up and running. The “soft opening” Consider The Sauce attends is loosely dedicated to media. It follows one the previous night for family and friends and will be followed by another for locals. I enjoy running into a few pals, but each invitee has chosen their own timetable and there is no communal seating, so this is just like a busy (normal) night and plays a dual role of fine-tuning the restaurant and its food. My dining companion, Star Weekly sales gun Rochelle Loney, and I go for the Feed Me set menu that retails for $49. In some ways, this is a bit lazy of us, and I later regret not taking the opportunity to explore the a la carte menu in more depth. But it does make things easy – and, besides, what we are served is very much the kind of thing I suspect many, perhaps most, customers here will want. What we get is pretty much straight-up Greek food – and I say that as no criticism. It all ranges, in my opinion, from good to very good, to outstanding. Warmed Mount Zero olives – lovely. In my world, the paler and less fishy the taramosalata the better it becomes. This is a luscious verging-on-white delight served with slightly fluffy, char-grilled pita bread. The black sesame lavosh and granny smith slices and puree top the saganaki with elan.

The HH grain salad with pulses, nuts and herbs is cool and moist, topped with creamy smoked yogurt. Heirloom carrots with fenugreek and almonds are sweet and flavoursome. The Hellenic Hotel rotisserie chicken … Normally, I’d expect to see greater depth of colour and way more turbo-charged seasoning. But this is superb. Of the two pieces we are presented, I get the one with the breast meat. To my great happiness, it is moist and delicious – which speaks highly of the quality of the chook, and the skill with which it has been cooked. Greek rice pudding – risogalo – is topped with rhubarb and candied pistachios. It’s a fine way to complete our meal. I like that its sweetness seems restrained. Consider The Sauce will visit Hellenic Hotel again soon to see how the $15 upstairs bar daily specials shape up! SPORT Power full of surprises as Jets take-off fails It was a sombre trip home for the Western Jets, upset by a struggling Gippsland Power by 43 points in the TAC Cup at Morwell on Saturday. The Jets let a golden opportunity slip against a Power side that had won only one of its first 10 games. There was a top-eight spot up for grabs for the Jets, but they were out-hustled by a side with no more to play for than pride. “They were a bit more hungry and wanted it a bit more,” Jets; coach Torin Baker told Star Weekly. “They ran harder and were stronger around the ball. “That made the difference on the scoreboard.” Of concern to the Jets was a knee injury to Blake Graham, who sustained damage to his posterior cruciate ligament.

A timeframe for his return will be known after scans this week. “It depends on the severity, whether it’s grade one or grade three,” Baker said. “Grade three, that would probably be season out, but if it’s grade one, it could be two to four weeks.” The Jets were without Nick Stuhldreier for most of the game after he was left dazed following a heavy knock. A pre-game illness jeopardised the match for Luke Hitch, who was in some doubt when the siren sounded for the first quarter. But Hitch fought through the pain and produced a game that was good enough to get him into the Jets’ best players. “Unfortunately, he got crook before the game, but we had to play him for a fair bit,”

Baker said. “He battled on as well as he could. It was pretty brave of him to stand up and play a decent game.” But Baker was blunt in his assessment of players’ performances. Aside from Oscar Junker’s late impact as a forward, some run and carry from Daniel Foley and the ball-winning ability of Nick Giarrizzo, the vast majority of Jets were down on their usual output. “We didn’t have anyone of stand-out proportions today,” Baker said. By Tara Murray Twenty minutes of poor football cost Melton a win against Darley in the Ballarat Football League on Saturday. In what Bloods coach Brad Murphy described as an eight-point game for his team, the Bloods were left to rue a poor second quarter in which the Devils kicked six goals to their opponents’ two. The Devils’ surge set up a match-winning 39-point lead at the main change. The Bloods got within seven points late in the last but couldn’t hit the front, succumbing 13.10 (88)-9.9 (63). Murphy said it was disappointing for one term of football to cost his team a win, the third time it’s happened this season. “Against Bacchus Marsh, Sunbury Lions and now Darley we’ve lost games we should have won,” he said. “They’re teams we wanted to compete against and we’ve been made to pay for one poor quarter. “We keep playing 100 minutes of football, not the 120 minutes we’re allotted.” Murphy said that had things gone their way late against Darley, the Bloods may have been able to pinch the win. “We got back to seven points with six or seven minutes to go,” he said. “There was a contest, which we thought was a mark not paid in our 50. We fumbled and they took it down the other end of the ground and scored. It was a 12-point turnaround. “We opened the game up and tried to move the ball quickly, which, in the end, gave them a couple of cheap goals, which flattered them.” Braedan Kight and Ryan Davis kicked two goals each for the Bloods. Dave Grenfell kicked four for the winners, with Darren Leonard voted best on ground. The result leaves the two sides equal on points and only percentage outside the top six. Murphy said he knew this middle part of the year would test them. “We’ve got a five-week period where we play four teams who played finals last year. “We’ve got a lot of the lower sides in the next few weeks and we know we need to win matches if we’re still a chance to finish sixth.” Saturday’s was the second consecutive game in which the Bloods fielded four players from the related Walker families – brothers Jack, Riley and Lachlan and their cousin, Daniel. The three brothers were all named among the day’s best players on Saturday. “Lachlan turned 18 today,” Murphy said on Sunday. “He’s captain of our under-18s and is the best of the kids coming through the club. He’s been among the best in his first two games. “We’re still blooding a lot of guys like Lachlan, which is a good sign for the club.”

Melton Centrals have made a statement of intent in the Riddell District Netball League by beating the previously undefeated Rupertswood on Saturday. Playing at home, Centrals started slowly but once they got going proved unstoppable on the way to a shock 36-28 win. The Sharks led at quarter-time by three goals, but it all went wrong from there as the Centrals opened up a nine-goal lead with a quarter to go. Centrals held their nerve in the last quarter to seal their best win of the season. For a second straight week, Rebecca Morabito was judged best on court. Playing goal attack, she shot a modest 10 goals but her passing and movement at the attacking end helped set up the win. Jessica Watton and Catherine Hocking were also standouts for the Centrals. Vanessa Seddon was the top shooter with 26 goals. Despite the win, Centrals remain fourth on the ladder, just percentage behind third-placed Macedon, which lost to Riddell. Diggers Rest kept the pressure on the top six sides with a 49-24 win against Wallan. Sitting in seventh spot and looking like the only team outside the top six that could play finals, the Burras led by three goals at the first break and extended the margin in every quarter. Burras playing coach Amy Carroll was the dominant shooter, scoring 39 of her side’s 49 goals. Mid-courters Vivien Leong and Jayde Peters were standouts in the win. The Burras remain in seventh spot, percentage behind sixth-placed Lancefield.

Diggers Rest is the only undefeated side after nine rounds of the Riddell District Football League season. But although the Burras’ winning streak remains intact, it didn’t come without a fight, as Wallan got closer to them than any other side this season. The Burras appeared to be on track for another big win when they led by 20 points at quarter-time. And even though it was a more even second quarter, the Burras extended the led to 30 points. The Magpies cut back the margin slightly after half-time but couldn’t get close enough and the Burras won 13.10 (88)-9.13 (67). Five players each kicked two for the Burras, while Jamie Lobb and Matthew Krul were the best. The Burras are now a game clear on top of the ladder, after Macedon lost to Riddell at the weekend. The Burras face Macedon this weekend. At the other end of the scale, it was another tough weekend for Melton Centrals and Rockbank, who both suffered 100-point losses. The Centrals were on the back foot early against Rupertswood, who had 11 scoring shots to two in the first quarter to open up a 44 point lead. The Sharks eventually won 23.16 (154)-7.9 (51). Second half fade-outs hurt as Cobras refine their mark Bacchus Marsh hopes to turn some good form into wins during the second half of the Ballarat Netball League season. The Cobras have only won one match this season so far, but have been in the mix in every one, before falling short in the second half. Cobras’ coach Dean Giarrusso said he was pleased with the encouraging signs nonetheless. “My plan this year was to set the team up, and then get the structures in place,” he said. “It has always been a struggle to get new players to the club and, in the past, we haven’t had a straight A-grade team, and had players coming in and out from the B and C-grade sides.

“This year we’re sticking with the same girls. “We’re really happy at the moment.” Despite just one win, Giarrusso said they were a better side than results showed. They have lost three games now by four goals. “We’ve been competitive in every game, and been in games, and sometimes in front at half time,” he said. “We’ve run out of legs, which is more the training sort of thing.” One of the most pleasing games was against the undefeated North Ballarat City side. “We lost by 20 goals, but last year we lost by 100 goals,” Giarrusso said. “We were in the game until half-time, and the North Ballarat City coach said [afterwards]

she was worried and had to put her best players back on the court.” Giarrusso said he hoped that, as the team played together more, it would play more consistently for four quarters. It’s his first season as coach. “We have come in and brought in a few experienced players, and got three or four players from Bacchus Marsh,” he said. “We’ve brought a few under-19 girls up as well. “We are consistent, but we’re just not finishing off games, and it’s our mistakes that are the issue. We can see massive improvement and we’re happy. We’d be more happy if we were winning though.”

Giarrusso said he thought his side was capable of winning another four to five games in the second half of the season. The Cobras face Sebastopol this week after the bye last weekend. “I have come from a winning culture and it’s something you can’t teach,” Giarrusso said. “Once you get that one win, you get confidence, and more will come.” In weekend results, Darley defeated Melton 41-31, while Melton South lost 58-29 against Lake Wendouree. Eagles end Sharks’ run By Tara Murray A shock loss to Hadfield in round 5 proved a welcome reality check for Hillside in division 1 of the Essendon District Football League. The loss, which saw the Sharks slip to 1-4, was the spark for the Sharks to turn their season around and they went on to win their next four games. But that winning streak came to an end against unbeaten Craigieburn on Saturday. The Sharks led at quarter time, before the Eagles kicked into gear and romped to a 23.18 (156)-10.8 (68) win. Mahmoud Taleb and Brandon Coletta kicked two goals each for the Sharks, while Victor Micallef was named their best. Speaking before Saturday’s game, Sharks coach Steve Burns said the loss to Hadfield was a line-in-the-sand moment for the club. “We battled early and fought back after some bad losses,” he said.

“After Hadfield we had a hard look at the entire coaching and playing group. “We sat down and worked out what was going on with ourselves and as a team. “It wasn’t a great week after that game, but it was the best thing that could have happened to the club.” Burns said one of the most pleasing things for him was the winning streak came while several senior players were injured, meaning younger players had to step up. “We’ve had a really bad run with injuries, so it’s pleasing to be winning,” Burns said. “We had 16 guys under 20 play and eight of those can play under-18s. “No one has disappointed when they’ve had the chance.” Jackson Volpato, Brandon Coletta, Jordan Sinclair and Andrew Papazoglou are among the young stars who have stood out this season. But Burns said he was still wary how the

young players would go in the colder months. He said he hoped that if they could stand up to the rigors of the weather they would challenge for a finals spot. The Sharks are fifth on the ladder after Saturday’s loss. “We were hoping for top six at the start of the season, but set no limits on how high we could finish,” Burns said. “We wanted to make finals and we’re not far away from being a quality side. “If we can handle the wet conditions we should be fine. Finals is now the aim.” Taylors Lakes remains in touch with the top four after a much-needed victory against Hadfield. It was a slow star for the Lions, who kicked away in the final quarter to win 14.10 (94)-10.7 (67). Keilor returned to the winners’ list in premier division, while East Keilor defeated Keilor Park in division 2.

Melton’s up and down season continued with a loss to ECHO on Saturday in Hockey Victoria men’s premier league 3. The Mustangs were hoping to take the points against ECHO, a side sitting in a comparable ladder position. Instead, ECHO took the points with a 2-0 victory to ensure it stayed above the Mustangs. Speaking before the game, Mustangs coach Glenn Lawrence said it had been a mixed season so far. “Last year, we had a building season and this year, we’re a bit stronger,” he said. “When we play the top half of the ladder, we move down, and when we play the bottom half, we move up the ladder. “We’re focusing on what we can control and look to be competitive with all sides.” Lawrence said that when playing the top sides, a more defensive approach was needed – something the Mustangs are working on at training. The Mustangs are fourth on the ladder, 16 points behind the ladder leaders, undefeated Old Melburnians. The two sides will face each other on July 9 after a competition bye this week. The Mustangs are also nine points clear of fifth place. “We try to be more defensive against the bigger teams,” Lawrence said. “It’s always hard to play against teams which have come down from higher grades, like Old Melburnians. “We don’t lack in attack and are free-flowing – we don’t have troubles with that. We are working on man marking and making sure that when we have the ball we are able to hold it.” Lawrence said the Mustangs’ challenge was to make sure they were matching it with the sides in similar ladder positions, such as Bayside and ECHO. “I think, as a team the players are gelling a lot better across the board and have stepped it up,” he said. The Mustangs reserves side sits on top of its ladder despite a 2-2 draw against ECHO on Saturday. Lawrence said the reserves line-up was more experienced than the first team. “The first team is more about youth and the future, while the second team is more about age and experience,” he said. “They are more than capable and won the grand final last year.” The Mustangs women side had a 3-0 win against bottom side Gippsland Bulls at Bellbird Park in Drouin. The win ensures the fourth-placed Mustangs maintain their eight-point gap over the chasing pack. The women reserves side also had a good win over the Bulls, winning 4-1.
