Last stand of the zombies

The casting call is sounding for 500 zombies, needed by filmmaker Leigh Ormsby for his latest horror The Last Hope. Ormsby needs extras for one of the largest action scenes to be filmed in Victoria. The Last Hope features a post-apocalyptic world invaded by zombies, and tracks foreign survivors who arrive in Australia by boat. Ormsby says the script doesn’t aim to take a stance. “It just helps to start the conversation about what we do in certain situations,” he says. “We’re pushing the limits on everything we know.” Ormsby, with a team of close friends and film buffs, crowdfunded to get the $3000 project off the ground, and is funnelling earnings from his day job at a bank for the rest. “It was a short film, originally for fun, but it’s just grown into something so much bigger than we anticipated,” Ormsby says. “We wanted to make a movie that changes the view of the Melbourne independent film industry.” The Last Hope is expected to screen in cinemas next year. Baby claims ‘in millions’ By Esther Lauaki Djerriwarrh Health Services could face millions of dollars of payouts after a review of newborn and stillborn deaths at Bacchus Marsh hospital confirmed 11 baby deaths in 2013 and 2014 were avoidable. Last week, Health Minister Jill Hennessy handed down the findings of the second review into baby deaths at Djerriwarrh Health Services going back to 2001. The review found that in addition to the seven baby deaths discovered in an investigation by Professor Euan Wallace last November, four more deaths at Bacchus Marsh hospital could have been avoided. Both reviews found there had been 38

stillbirth and newborn deaths at the hospital from 2001 to the present day, and the avoidable deaths had occurred as a result of deficiencies in clinical care provided by Djerriwarrh Health Services. Lawyers for the families are seeking payments of up to $250,000 for each case, but claims could extend to babies left with permanent injuries at birth. Maurice Blackburn lawyer Dimitra Dubrow is representing eight of the 11 families, along with another 17 families whose babies died or were injured at Djerriwarrh. Ms Dubrow urged the government to look back at cases of injury at birth. “We need to determine if any failings on behalf of the hospital caused these injuries.”

She said the families had gone through grief only to be told that their babies’ deaths were avoidable. “That kind of pain is just indescribable,” she said. Slater and Gordon principal lawyer Anne Shortall is representing a number of families whose babies died or were left with life-changing injuries following their birth at Bacchus Marsh hospital. She said her clients could be seeking millions of dollars in compensation and damages. “The families who have lost babies at Bacchus Marsh Hospital are entitled to and deserve to be compensated for the loss of their precious children,” she said. Djerriwarrh chief executive Andrew Freeman

said significant progress had been made in all areas of the hospital and its services. “In addition to implementing all of the recommendations made by Professor Wallace in his report into maternity services, we have also instigated a process of change and developed rigour and accountability across the organisation,” Mr Freeman said. “With new, contemporary leadership, new senior clinical practitioners and improved standards of care, safety and systems of clinical governance now in place at the health service, we can give assurance of a safe, secure and fully functioning maternity service at Bacchus Marsh and Melton Regional Hospital.” He credited the progress to the dedication of staff.

Highway folk dodge death daily By Sumeyya Ilanbey A Brookfield resident says it’s only a matter of time before someone is killed on the Western Highway. Geoff, who didn’t want his surname used, moved into Park Edge Way estate, next to the Western Highway, more than two years ago. In that time, he’s seen dozens of people, mainly teenagers, attempt to dodge highway traffic to get to Woodgrove shopping centre. Last year, a 14-year-old boy was airlifted to The Alfred hospital in a critical condition after being hit by a car while trying to cross the highway.

The Western Highway was named one of Victoria’s deadliest stretches of road in 2012. The Australian Road Assessment Program research, carried out every five years, assessed traffic, death and serious injury statistics to map Australia’s riskiest roads. Geoff is now calling on the state government and VicRoads to build a pedestrian overpass along the Woodgrove section of the highway. “I’ve watched kids cross that road since the day we’ve moved in,” he told Star Weekly. “An overpass would settle a lot of problems.” He said the erection of noise barriers would also prevent people from using the naturestrip to cross the freeway.

And it would help alleviate noise problems for estate residents. “We can’t open the window,” he says. “We’ve had to put roller shutters in because the windows rattle [because of freeway noise]. We can’t sit outside, and it’s impossible to have a barbecue.” “We were under the impression noise barriers would go up – it just looked like commonsense. There are some around the other estates.” Fellow Brookfield resident and council candidate Ken Hardy said development levies collected by the council and the state government should have been spent on safety measures near Park Edge Way estate.

“It’s a simple allocation of resources,” Mr Hardy told Star Weekly. “They get a lot of money and they can allocate. The last thing the community wants … is a death.” Melton council planning services manager Bob Baggio said the $815,000 received in development levies goes toward infrastructure projects and upgrades to local roads. “Council will advocate to VicRoads to alert them of our residents’ concerns,” Mr Baggio said. “We will also ascertain what pedestrian movement options exist now, and into the future, abutting the Western Freeway.”

Caroline Springs Country Fire Authority volunteers have denied allegations they are concerned about the future of their role in light of a new enterprise bargaining agreement for paid firefighters. Western Metropolitan MP Bernie Finn said in State Parliament last week that CFA volunteers feared they would lose their roles. He said volunteers had been bullied and intimidated by members of the United Firefighters Union. However, a western suburbs CFA volunteer, who did not want her name used, said her brigade wasn’t concerned by the changes in the proposed EBA. “We work side by side with our staff; it doesn’t concern us,” she said. “We’re an integrated brigade, we’re all good.” Caroline Springs CFA station officer Peter Higgins said the issue had been politicised. “The EBA won’t affect their [volunteers’] operational ability. We just feel as though we’re being used as political footballs.” United Firefighters Union secretary Peter Marshall last week attempted to allay fears in an open letter to volunteers. To address concerns that seven professional firefighters must be dispatched to incidents before firefighting begins, he said if volunteers arrived on the scene first, they would begin the firefight. Emergency Services Minister Jane Garrett resigned her portfolio last Friday over the CFA’s proposed EBA deal.

Health pledge for Ballan surgery By Sumeyya Ilanbey Federal Labor has pledged to fund two day-surgery theatres in Ballan if it wins the election next month. Ballarat MP Catherine King announced last week a Labor government would invest $2.2 million in the theatres for Ballan District Health and Care (BDHC). “Ballan District Health provides crucial health, aged care and child care services to people across Moorabool,” Ms King’s spokesman said.

“People who live in the surrounding areas, like Daylesford and parts of Hepburn, also rely on these services. “But population growth across the region means Ballan District Health will struggle to meet demand in the years ahead.” A BDHC spokeswoman said the organisation was “delighted” by Labor’s commitment. “Currently, close to 35,000 same-day procedures are being carried out in the region each year,” the spokeswoman said. “The need will grow as population grows, and it makes sense to address this

identified need by building capacity in Ballan.” The Ballan group’s catchment area covers western Victoria – including Moorabool, Hepburn and Ballarat – with a combined population of more than 100,000 people. By 2041 Moorabool’s population is expected to increase 69 per cent to 53,000, and the number of children aged four and under will increase 73 per cent to 3000. The $2.2 million pledged by federal Labor will cover theatre construction costs, which could be within place within 12 months. Most contractors will be local, the BDHC

spokeswoman said. “The unit will employ 26 new staff members – medical, maintenance and administrative – and bring an estimated additional $2.53 million into the local economy,” she said. Ms King, who is federal Labor’s health spokeswoman, said she was particularly pleased to announce the funding commitment in her own community. “A Shorten Labor government would invest in health and hospitals across Australia – including right here in Ballan,” Ms King said.

A morning tea at Taylors Hill will help shine a light on elder abuse. As part of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, Melton council will host the morning tea to “remind our community that human rights do not diminish as people get older”. Speakers from Seniors Rights Victoria will raise awareness about elder abuse and the importance of getting financial, medical, legal and other affairs in order. Melton mayor Kathy Majdlik said the council hoped people at the morning tea would be empowered to recognise signs of elder abuse and speak against it. “Given that most elder abuse occurs behind closed doors, it’s important that as a community we look out for the signs and offer help,” she said. The council describes elder abuse as being “vastly under-reported” yet up to 10 per cent of older people worldwide are affected, according

In fear for her family’s safety By Sumeyya Ilanbey When Amelia moved to Caroline Springs last year, she hoped it would be the perfect suburb to raise a family. But the rising crime rate, coupled with low police numbers, has Amelia (not her real name) fearing for her family’s safety. She’s ramped up security in her home, and is afraid to go on leisurely walks with her husband and daughter in the evenings. “We looked at various places across the west and, to us, Caroline Springs felt the safest and most family-oriented,” Amelia says. “But I now know, if something were to happen, it could be at least 20 minutes for police to respond if [Caroline Springs] officers are tied up. And that worries me even more.” The Caroline Springs resident says she no longer feels safe. She has added her support to a campaign by Caroline Springs and Melton officers calling for extra police, as reported by Star Weekly. “It’s not fair on those officers because they’re doing as much as they can, but they’re so under-resourced,” Amelia says. “It’s not fair on them and it’s not fair on the community.” She’s hearing about more stories of people being victims of crime, and says social media

posts about crime in the area are making her “scared”. Amelia says her dad, who also lives in Caroline Springs, sleeps with a hammer beside his bed at night. “You don’t want to live in fear, but you need to be aware of what’s happening,” she says. “I’m definitely worried it’ll get worse. It’s really scary. “The solution is definitely more police and tougher penalties.” Police Association assistant secretary Inspector Bruce McKenzie said it was “disappointing, but not surprising” that Caroline Springs residents were feeling unsafe. “The residents’ expectations of police are very reasonable,” Inspector McKenzie said. “It’s reasonable to expect that, when you live in Melton or Caroline Springs, police will come when you call them and that, when they do, they have the capacity to get there in time to help. “It’s also reasonable to expect that, as a resident, you will see police proactively patrolling the streets and public places to keep the community safe and deter crime. “Our members have told us plain and simple in recent months that they do not currently have the numbers to ensure that this occurs all of the time,” Inspector McKenzie said.

Suburb that didn’t forget For more than three decades, there were no new Returned Services League sub-branches opened around Victoria. So when Peter Burquest and two other men decided to give it a crack and register a branch at Caroline Springs a few years ago, it seemed like a daring idea. Two years on, there are 190 members and the branch is involved with numerous projects. “There are quite a number of military personnel around this area, who are either still in the services or very recently out of it,” Mr Burquest said. “We wanted to cater for those people coming from Afghanistan who would need

welfare support. [But] We need the younger people to take the reins of the RSL, take it to the next level and make sure it continues on for service people into the future,” Mr Burquest added. RSL Australia last week celebrated 100 years of service and support for ex-service members, their families and local communities. Veterans Minister John Eren congratulated the RSL. “We look forward to working with [the RSL], to continue supporting our veterans as their needs, issues and priorities change and evolve.” Sumeyya Ilanbey

In nature, art abounds Melton artist Jacqueline Le Souef drew inspiration from the beauty in nature for her latest exhibition, Trees and Things. A selection of more than 40 acrylic, watercolour, pen, pastel and pencil works form the exhibition at the Melton Library and Learning Hub until June 30. Le Souef’s subjects for the body of work include scenic, abstract, flowers and animals. “There’s so many things that inspire me,” she says. “I’ll walk outside and see the autumn leaves and so I’ll take a handful of them with me and paint them. “The other day I went down to a creek in Melton and took some photos and I went home and painted them.

“I don’t have a main focus in Trees and Things because I paint what I love and whatever I see.” Le Souef has held more than 20 solo exhibitions and won many prizes. The self-taught artist once painted a fibreglass elephant for Melbourne Zoo in celebration of the birth of its Malaysian elephant Mali. She will be conducting in-house painting demonstrations during her Melton exhibition. Bus passengers now ‘early birds’ A Ballan man is demanding answers from Public Transport Victoria after he claims a school bus timetable was changed without community consultation. Scott Klauber usually drives his 13-year-old daughter to a Darley Park bus stop to catch the 8.10am bus. But overcrowding on the route meant the bus was rescheduled to leave its stop at 8.05am … then it was pushed back again to 7.52am. The departure time is now too early for Mr Klauber to meet, he drops his other two children at a bus stop in Ballan at 7.45am, and has meant his daughter is forced to catch an 8.07am bus from a nearby stop on a different route. The buses are myki-enabled but contracted to Bacchus Marsh Coaches to run the schoolhour services. “There’s no way I can drop my daughter off at the bus stop at 7.52am,” Mr Klauber said. “If my daughter took the 7.52am bus from Darley, she’d get to school in 20 minutes. School doesn’t start until 8.45am – what are kids going to do for 40 minutes?” Mr Klauber says he’s called PTV on numerous occasions to work out the processes around rescheduling public transport, and is still waiting on Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan’s office to return his calls. “How can they do that without any community consultation or any input from parents?” Mr Klauber said. “Most of the kids who were on that 8.10am

bus just moved to the closest bus stop, which leaves at 8.05am on Gisborne Road. “And then they caused themselves the same problem [of overcrowding].” Bacchus Marsh Coaches’ general manager, Dave Nickels said children needed to get on the closest bus to their home. “Mums and dads need to stop driving their children to the latest bus so they can sleep in. Some buses will travel from Bacchus Marsh to Melton with only 30 students. “Take your closest bus, please.” A PTV spokesman said the new timetable would ensure fluctuations in patronage numbers could be managed safely. “There was also a risk that if buses leave later they might miss other school connections, a factor that PTV took into account when approving these changes.”

Working for the town A new study will focus on how commuting to work in Melbourne could be changing regional Victorian towns. Todd Denham, of RMIT University’s Centre for Urban Research, is undertaking his doctorate on the increasing numbers of people traveling from regional Victoria to Melbourne for work. Mr Denham, who lived in Castlemaine for a number of years, said he began to question why some regional towns were developing more rapidly than others. “Places like Melton, Ballan, Gisborne, Woodend, parts of Werribee and Whittlesea, have changed dramatically over the past few years,” he said.

“A key aspect of my study looks at people who are commuting to Melbourne to earn more money in the city, and then bringing that money back home to spend in their regional town, and the growth that results from that. “But there is another, more important factor to consider. Do commuters tire of the two to three-hour travel into Melbourne and look to start working closer to home? “This becomes particularly important … if it leads to the formation of new businesses.” Mr Denham has created an online survey to gather more data. Water hopes run dry By Adem Saban A federal announcement of $45 million for water infrastructure upgrades has left Bacchus Marsh and Werribee South market gardeners high and dry. Agriculture and Water Minister Barnaby Joyce last week visited Victoria to announce an upgrade of the south-west Loddon pipeline, funding for the Macalister irrigation district in east Gippsland and funding to conduct 10 water feasibility studies. But there was no funding allocated for the much-needed upgrade of the Bacchus Marsh

and Werribee South irrigation districts. This year’s state budget included $5 million for the upgrade of the Bacchus Marsh irrigation system and $11.4 million for Werribee South. Both funding allocations accounted for a third of the overall costs of the two projects, with it being hoped the federal government would match that of Southern Rural Water and the state government. When questioned on why these regions were not allocated federal funding, a spokesman for Mr Joyce said there were many worthy projects around the country, but there was only limited funding available at this time. The spokesman

said that the two projects which were funded were considered high priority. Labor Lalor MP Joanne Ryan said a Labor government, if elected, would work alongside the state government to determine how they could best improve water security and water quality for Werribee South and Bacchus Marsh. State Water Minister Lisa Neville was unimpressed by the lack of federal funding for the region. “The Bacchus Marsh and Werribee irrigation districts have been hit hard with the impact of climate change and poor inflows over the last 12 months,” she said.

MY PLACE Glenda Jones thinks she’s found the sweet spot of regional Victoria in Bacchus Marsh and she wants everyone to know about it. She spoke to Esther Lauaki about tourism, strawberries and her love for Moorabool. What’s your connection to Moorabool? I moved to the Avenue of Honour in Bacchus Marsh in 1970. I married an orchardist and I’ve lived here ever since. Tell me a bit about yourself? My husband and I own an orchard, Jeff Jones Plant and Produce. We grow and sell stone fruit, apples, pumpkins and persimmons that people can come and pick on their own. We have two sons who also work with us on the farm.

What changes have you seen in the area since you’ve lived here? Growth is the biggest change I’ve noticed. When I first came to Bacchus Marsh, the town sign when you come in said 3100 people lived here. That number has nearly doubled and will only grow. With that growth comes a lot of things, but our infrastructure is a bit behind. We have the basics, but it’s a matter of our local and state governments going through the necessary processes.

What work do you do in the community? My passion is tourism and so I took on a role as secretary of the Bacchus Marsh Tourism Association. When the association started, we produced and distributed a brochure about the area … that led to us hosting events like the Harvest Festival in March and the Strawberry and Cherry Festival in November. It makes it easier for us to bring tourists into Bacchus Marsh for the delicious fresh produce, then they can explore the beautiful area and enjoy a variety of country experiences.

What do you love about Bacchus Marsh? It’s situated 45 minutes from Geelong, Ballarat and Melbourne, so you’re never far from a major centre. At the same time, we’re developing so fast; you have everything here

Mascalzone has been open several weeks replacing one of the nondescript venues for which Nelson Place is mostly known, that one replacing another before it. Mascalzone is a sure step in a positive direction. It’s done out brightly, with an accent on Italian in its decor, ambience and food. There’s a big brick oven at the rear and a display cabinet of fine-looking antipasto goodies at the front. We find the service for Saturday lunch is terrific and our food is brought to us in a timely fashion. Mascalzone’s menu is a smartly tight line-up of modern Italiana classics that extends from starters through pizzas, pasta and salads to dolci. When checking out such joints as this for the first time, we routinely choose one of the basic pizzas, just to see how they shape up. In this case that means the napoletana ($18), picked from a list of nine red pizzas and five of the white kind. Our pizza is very nice, with simplicity being the thing. The toppings are all of good quality and in the right proportions. The crusts have a wonderful charred thing going on. From the list of five pastas, we select the pappardelle al ragu di agnello with roasted asparagus ($22). At first, the lamb shoulder sauce and the white pasta present as so pale as to be pallid.

SPORT Jets’ fill-in players stake claims to keep their spot The Western Jets have been hit hard by the absence of their private school-eligible players in the first nine rounds of the TAC Cup. Constant papering over the cracks has led to an inconsistent season, with the Jets struggling in 10th spot with a 3-6 record. Jets coach Torin Baker sees a bright side to not having a number of top-end players available. “We’re still trying to give opportunities to all the players on our list,” Baker told Star Weekly. “Sometimes, the players who make the most of their opportunity … it’s very difficult to rotate them out. They can become regulars. “Over the past three games, we’ve been able to find players who are standing up to make sure they’re in the selection frame when we’re at our strongest.”

The Jets’ situation is urgent. They need to start winning or they will find themselves missing out on the finals action. With AFL recruiters in attendance, featuring in finals can be critical for players’ chances of being drafted. There’s also a sense of regional pride in being part of the September action. The boys from the west are eager to show they can match it with the other parts of the state for football talent. “The players are really keen to experience finals,” Baker said. “If they go well, it might lead to them getting drafted or propel them up the draft order. “Even for the 17-year-olds, if you happen to go well in finals, you’re a fairly good chance to make the initial Vic Metro squad for next year.

“There’s a fair bit riding on finals for individuals and then it’s the enjoyment as a team of having success.” The Jets expect to be close to full strength for five to six of the remaining eight TAC Cup regular-season games. That is going to pose a few selection headaches for the coaching staff and create a more competitive team in the run home. “Over the next couple of weeks it’s Oakleigh and Gippsland, who are either just below us or above us; they’re important games,” Baker said. “It’s an important time for selection as well – players can lock in their spots in the next few weeks.” Lance Jenkinson

Darley duo Leigh Spiteri and Luke Delahey have been selected in the Vic Country under-19 preliminary squad to meet a Victorian Amateur Football Association side on July 10. Darley coach Jarrod Edwards said the two players had been rewarded for the efforts they had put in over the past year. “In the last 12 months they’ve put their hands up week-in and week-out,” Edwards said. “They’re in the development squad at Geelong’s VFL team and they have put in the hard work. They don’t miss a [training] session.”

Melton was unable to match it with Redan in the second half of the Ballarat Netball League match on Saturday. Scores were level at half-time, before the Lions opened up the match with a 16-8 third quarter. They increased the margin to 10 goals at the final whistle, to win 41-31. Darley suffered a 39-31 loss to Ballarat. The Devils were on the back foot early and trailed by eight goals at half-time. And although they were able to match it with Ballarat in the second half, they could not reduce the margin. Reigning premiers North Ballarat City defeated Bacchus Marsh 61-39. Phoenix turns it around By Tara Murray Melton Phoenix came from two goals down to snatch victory in the dying seconds against bottom of the ladder Maribyrnong Greens in FFV state league 4 west on Saturday. Phoenix trailed 2-0 just after half-time at MacPherson Park until a goal by Beau Chang got them back into the match. A penalty allowed substitute Jason Moody to level the scores. He chipped in with a second goal in injury-time to snatch a 3-2 win. Coach Peter Schwellinger said he was happy to get the win against a side they were expected to beat. “We started very slowly and were sluggish and lethargic,” he said. “Maybe we underestimated them, being the bottom side. “They had some good players back and we knew it wasn’t going to be easy but didn’t start well.” 36 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ JUNE 14, 2016

It’s the third time in four games that Moody has scored coming off the bench for the Phoenix. “It’s good to have someone who can come off the bench,” Schwellinger said. “It’s normally his job to come on and score and dominate. He is now our leading scorer.” The win sees the Phoenix seventh on the ladder, five points behind second-placed Surf Coast with a game in hand. Brimbank Stallions is the runaway leader, 10 points clear of second place. Schwellinger said Phoenix was still on track to achieve it’s pre-season goal of finishing in the top four. “If we win the match in hand we’re only two points behind second,” he said. “Everyone is looking for second spot to get into playoffs. “We finished in the middle last year and the main aim was to finish top four.”

Schwellinger knows it won’t be easy with the departure of key players in recent weeks, including Jordan Borg, then the side’s leading scorer, who has joined state league 2 side Fitzroy. Schwellinger said while the club had also struggled with injuries, it had found a couple of players who could play at the top level. He said there was good depth at the club with its second side sitting on second on the ladder and the thirds in the top two or three. “Reece Mamic, who is just 19, played for the senior side for first time as a stopper,” Schwellinger said. “Jake Etherton started the season in the thirds and has worked his way up to the senior team. “Robert Bebenek has come back from injury and it’s good to have other players stepping up.”

Aidan Stott has been given the job of coaching Essendon District Football League division 2 side Burnside Heights for the rest of this season and all of next season. He replaces Tahan Rafihi, who parted ways with the club about five weeks ago and senior assistant coach Michael Davies had been coaching the side in the meantime. Bears president Justin Peagram said they made the decision to appoint a coach now with one eye on next year. “It was a calculated risk,” he said. “We knew we would likely get coaches apply who were with higher division reserves or senior assistant coaches. We thought we’d be able to flush out a few good applicants. Thoroughbreds find form with coach back in the saddle After a slow start to the season, Melton Thoroughbreds are hitting their straps in Big V men’s division. Last year’s premiers had a 3-5 record after the first eight matches and have won their past six games to sit nicely in the top eight going into the Queen’s Birthday bye weekend. Despite the winning streak, the Thoroughbreds have had to deal with some off-court drama with the club parting ways with coach Grant Spencer. Julie McCallum, last year’s championship coach, is back in the head role and will coach the team for the remainder of the year. McCallum said the association had made the decision that Spencer and the club were heading in different directions.

“It’s been an easy transition,” McCallum said of returning to her old role. “It’s the same group of guys, and they know how I coach and I know how they play.” She said the biggest turnaround in recent weeks was that the team’s belief in itself had returned. “There’s a positive vibe,” she said. “After a couple of losses, some negativity had come into the group. “They’ve always backed themselves. But a few changes [were] brought in [that]didn’t go as seamlessly as we would have liked.” McCallum said the squad had lifted across the board, and been boosted by the return of big man Cameron McCallum (McCallum’s son).

The club has also added former Sunbury Jets’ player Billy Feben to the list. He was in the starting five last week, in just his third game for the club. McCallum said the Thoroughbreds were a strong team and would not be hindered by the loss of star recruit and NBL player Chris Patton. Patton played in the opening round of the season before heading overseas on holidays and hasn’t played with the Thoroughbreds since returning. “We’ve still got the team to win” McCallum said. “We go nine players deep, and don’t really rely on one player. “There’s a good mix of players and, with Cam back, we’ll have a player to fill the big man role on the court.”

McCallum said the league-wide Queen’s Birthday bye had come at a perfect time for the Thoroughbreds. “We have a couple of niggling injuries,” she said. “We played five games in three weeks, so the break is good for us.” McCallum didn’t have the weekend off though, heading to Shepparton for the Big V All-star series as coach of the women’s country side. Devils re-set their sights By Tara Murray During a week off for interleague recently, reigning premier Darley sat down and reassessed where its Ballarat Football League season was at. After winning only one of their first five matches, against bottom side Melton South, the Devils’ premiership defence was quickly heading in the wrong direction. Coach Jarrod Edwards said it was clear his team wasn’t up to scratch in the first five matches and needed to work out what was going wrong. “There was just a lack of effort from the group and a couple of weeks we didn’t turn up to play,” he said. “We lost by only 10 points to [undefeated] Lake Wendouree so we played some good football. But, for whatever reason, we haven’t been consistent. “We had some honest discussions with the midfield group and they’ve been brilliant the

past couple of weeks.” After beating North Ballarat City the previous week, the Devils made it two wins in a row with victory over Ballarat on Saturday. The Devils controlled the game from the opening bounce to win 12.19 (91)-6.7 (43). While pleased with the win, Edwards was disappointed it wasn’t by a bigger margin. “Goalkicking was the disappointing aspect. We controlled the game and won a lot of possession,” he said. “We missed a lot of easy opportunities and have to get a lot better at it. We’ll focus on goalkicking during the week.” One of the culprits in front of goal was off-season recruit Mitch Banner. While Banner, who played AFL with Port Adelaide and VFL with Williamstown, kicked a game-high six goals, Edwards wasn’t happy with his eight behinds. “We’ve been trying to find the balance with him and the role that fits him and the side best,” Edwards said.

“We think the small forward role, and someone who has a licence to move up the ground, suits him. “When inside 50 he’s a prolific goalscorer and he has an engine that can run all day.” Steve Kennedy, who kicked two goals on Saturday, was best on ground, while Scott McAllester, Banner and Edwards also impressed. The Devils this week face Sebastopol, which has just one win. “Hopefully, we can win three straight, which we haven’t done for a while,” Edwards said. Elsewhere, Bacchus Marsh returned to the top two with a massive win over North Ballarat City. Jarrah Maksymow kicked five goals for the Cobras in their 19.8 (122)-10.11 (71) scoreline. Melton had its biggest loss of the season, succumbing to Redan 18.12 (120)-5.8 (38). Melton South had the bye.

With Diggers Rest yet to hit its straps this season, the other Riddell District Football League sides can only hope it doesn’t happen any time soon. Ahead of the Queen’s Birthday weekend bye, the Burras are one of only two undefeated sides. Burras coach Shaun Sims says it’s a positive start, but they haven’t been playing their best football. “The seniors haven’t hit their straps,” he said. “We’re doing enough to get over the line and the trick is to get into good habits. “We’ve played some decent football at times. Being one of the top sides, clubs want to beat us and I think it’s that and a bit of us getting used to playing together. “We’ve had a fairly solid start, playing four of the other finalists from last year. There are no easy games this year. “Our second half against WoodendHesket was the best football we’ve played.” One the biggest positives for the Burras, after losing the past three grand finals, is the numbers pushing for senior selection. “There are about five or six players out from last year’s team, and we’ve only brought in two walk-up starts in Cale Morton and Taylor Hine,” Sims said. “We’ve been fairly lucky with injuries until the past week or so. Changes have been through form, and we’ve got some real talent in the twos. “Guys who are playing in the twos and are performing are going to get games.” The club has focused on injecting youth into the side as it looks to the future. “We’ve had six players under 20 play, and it’s a real positive for the club,” Sims said. “Last year, we were a fairly older list. This year … [younger players] are coming in and playing well. Josh Wallace, Corey Wright and Chris Samagalski have all played seniors.” Sims said it was a good feeling to have only one loss among the club’s three sides. The Burras’ reserves are undefeated on top of the ladder, while the under-18.5s are second, having lost just once, to undefeated Rupertswood. Meanwhile, Burras’ gun Jason Williams is one of 15 players in the running for an AFL rookie contract on TV show The Recruit. Williams, who wasn’t expected to play many RDFL games due to VFL commitments, has played twice for the Burras this season. The Burras this week face bottom side Rockbank.
