Birds of contention By Esther Lauaki Hundreds of corellas and cockatoos have ruled the roost at Caroline Springs Square for long enough, business owners say. Businesses started a petition last week urging Melton council to find a solution for the nuisance birds that gather in Hitchcock-like proportions on shop awnings, rooftops and window ledges daily. Quest Caroline Springs owner Natalie Bui said the problem at her serviced apartments was out of control and she decided to research a solution of her own. “Over the past six weeks we’ve seen an influx of corellas in Caroline

Springs,” she said. “Birds naturally flock to our building and hang on the architraves, window sills, roofs and guests’ balconies. “Noisy corellas love to sharpen their beaks and chip into window caulking and wires. Over time this will cause extensive damage to the building such as leaking windows, destruction of electric wires and TV antennas. “We’ve had many guest complaints due to the noise. They [the birds] attach themselves to window sills, constantly tap on windows and call for other corellas, and there’s excessive bird excrement down the building.” Ms Bui has engaged the help of Graeme Coles, owner of Full Flight Birds of Prey, who

ran a management plan for the seagull problem at the Melbourne Cricket Ground which involved using trained eagles to scare the gulls away. Mr Coles said two eagles would be released in the Caroline Springs area every day for a week to scare off the flock. “We’re currently working at a particular site in Caroline Springs to deal with a growing bird problem in the area,” he said. “We have two eagles that we’re putting in a variety of situations to see which would best suit our purposes in Caroline Springs. “Quest is having enormous problems … particularly with corellas. Up to 400 at any

one time gather throughout the day,” Mr Coles said. “It’s not a magic pill because it does take some time to change their behaviour. It could take weeks, it could take months or even years. “This method is primarily used to move the birds on and prevent them from coming back.” “In some applications, using eagles is a very effective and the most humane method of dealing with the problem.” Mr Coles said a common concern was whether the eagles, which are predatory birds, could attack other birds. Culling birds is illegal in Victoria and carries a penalty of more than $10,000 per bird.

Reopen Fiskville, top firey urges By Esther Lauaki Ballan’s community is waiting with bated breath to hear what is to become of the Country Fire Authority’s training facility at Fiskville next week. The final report of a state government inquiry, which was launched after the site’s closure in March last year because of contamination, was due to be tabled in State Parliament on May 16 but the date has been extended to next Tuesday, May 24. In April, the state budget set aside

$46.2 million to establish a new firefighting training centre in the Central Highlands and upgrade the training facility at Huntly in response to the closure of CFA Fiskville. An additional $80.7 million will be invested over four years to decommission and remediate the Fiskville site and conduct environmental audits and upgrades at six other emergency training centres across regional Victoria. Ballan fire brigade lieutenant Ian Ireland made submissions to the inquiry in support of reopening Fiskville following remedial works. He said he believed the government

was searching for reasons to keep Fiskville closed. “I’d like to see them channel the money into building a new pad for training and utilise the facilities at Fiskville,” he said. “It would save the Victorian ratepayers a lot of money. The closest training facilities available to us are in Bendigo and Horsham. If we start taking our equipment out there to use that will diminish our fire service here.” Mr Ireland said returning the site to a usable condition was important for Ballan’s economy. “The levels of contamination are not high

enough to be harmful to humans,” he said. “There are still full-time workers out there including gardeners and people doing remedial work. “We want the facility open so that it creates employment. We certainly need to create some jobs in our community.” Moorabool council chief executive Rob Croxford said he was optimistic about the government’s plans for Fiskville. “[Its retention] will assist the community and local businesses … and start to rebuild economic activity in Ballan.”

Cleanaway has been warned for not immediately notifying the environment watchdog over licence breaches at its Ravenhall landfill. At one of its underground service pits on Friday, April 8, methane levels were recorded at 10,441 parts per million. The company’s licence requires levels not to exceed 10,000ppm. The Environment Protection Authority issued a warning to Cleanaway for taking two weeks to notify the watchdog about the limit being exceeded. EPA metro manager Dan Hunt said that while the impact of the exceedance levels was “marginal”, Cleanaway should have informed EPA about the incident. “Licence-holders have obligations to operate within EPA licence conditions and when that doesn’t happen, they must be held to account to ensure the community and environment are not impacted,” he said. Mr Hunt said EPA was assessing the measures Cleanaway had put in place to address the methane non-compliance. “EPA has also commenced an investigation into the possible cause of the methane licence breach,” he said. According to an EPA spokeswoman, the methane exceedance did not impact residents living nearby “as methane levels were recorded at boundary and below-ground level”. “Residents are over three kilometres away from the methane, which is a non-odorous, non-toxic gas,” she said. A Cleanaway spokesman said there was a “slight delay” in the upload of the information into the system, “which in turn delayed our notification to the EPA”.

Time’s up for LGBTI village By Esther Lauaki Peter Dickson’s dream of developing Australia’s first residential village for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex community at Ballan could be over before it’s even properly begun. Moorabool council has rejected a fifth extension of time on Linton Estate’s building permit, which expired in January. Councillors voted at their May meeting to refuse the extension of the permit, which has been extended four times in the past eight years, on the grounds that no reasonable commencement of works had been undertaken.

A representative of DomaCom, a crowdfunding finance company Mr Dickson approached last year to get the project off the ground, spoke on behalf of Mr Dickson, telling councillors a team of developers and financiers was now backing the project. “Funding is the key criteria and we have solved this problem,” the representative said. “We have a team to deliver the project; it is real, it is measurable and we are ready. “Mr Dickson is ready to push forward. The team is here to help him do this. “We want to push forward the development and give council the assurances it will happen.”

Cr Pat Toohey was unconvinced that any real construction had occurred and said the site was an “eyesore and a fire hazard”. “The site is full of noxious weeds – they are fence height – and [it] remains an eyesore and a fire hazard,” he said. Cr Paul Tatchell suggested that Mr Dickson appeared to be “warehousing” the land so it could be sold later.

He said excavation works, “a handful of pegs” and “a couple of meters of screenings” did not constitute evidence of work having begun. “I’ve followed this application for a number of years since serving on this council and I’ve seen numerous presentations in relation to this development, no two the same,” Cr Tatchell said. “There is no doubt in my mind that a new application should be presented that accurately demonstrates the applicant’s intent.” Mr Dickson can challenge Moorabool council’s decision to refuse the permit extension at the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal.

Muso tells her story Catherine Meeson was only 13 when she started putting her heart, soul and composing talents into her music. Almost three decades later, the Melton South woman has released her third album, titled Contemplating Buddha – with modern, sophisticated computer music tools playing a big part. “I got myself computers back in 2008 and downloaded the software,” Meeson said. “I had a lot of heartache and conflict in my life for quite a big period … when I eventually got everything I needed, I had to let it all out.” She says her style is hard to define. “Some of it’s sort of folk-rocky, pop-rocky, some of it is more soundscape, almost cinematic,” she said. Themes included in her latest album include “deep space, spirituality, politics, mythology,

philosophy, relationships and nostalgia”, with the material having been written between 2010 and 2015. “I’m just one person, so I’m learning each time,” Meeson said of the album process. “You need such big networks and so much planning, but there’s just me. Desperate plea on cop staffing By Sumeyya Ilanbey Victoria Police has been accused of abandoning Caroline Springs, where pressure on officers and the community is described as “unreal”. The divvy van based at the Caroline Springs station can spend up to 75 per cent of its time backing up units in Melton or being tied up at hospitals where officers “babysit” ice-affected criminals waiting to see mental health staff. A Victoria Police officer, speaking to Star Weekly on the condition of anonymity, highlighted the plight of colleagues and pleaded with Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton to support police officers in Caroline Springs and Melton. “Please have a look at our resources, please help our members in outer suburbs because it won’t be long before they start falling down,” the officer said. Under-staffing is one of the biggest issues in Caroline Springs, according to the officer, while violent ice addicts and domestic violence perpetrators are increasing the police workload. “There’s no staff,” the officer said. “The pressure on the members is unreal. In all the years I’ve been in the job, I’ve never seen it like what it is now. We’ve got members doing anywhere between 10 and 20 hours’ overtime [in a fortnight]. “We help the community, but it feels as though we’re being left out. Where’s our welfare support?”

The officer questioned how well Victoria Police was allocating resources. There were “hundreds of coppers” patrolling the streets in Melbourne’s CBD but only two divvy vans covering 527 square kilometres across Melton and Caroline Springs, the officer said. He said the chief commissioner should “look at redistributing police officers” to the urban fringes. “The Operational Response Unit – where are those members when we need them?” he asked. “They’re not in our suburbs.” Star Weekly asked Victoria Police if it considered under-resourcing and staffing in the Melton police service areas as a priority. In a statement, police spokeswoman Danielle Fleeton said the organisation recognised the concerns around police numbers in Melton and in other growth areas of Victoria. “We continually monitor crime statistics and emerging trends to identify areas most in need of additional resources,” Ms Fleeton said. Crime in the 3023 postcode, which includes Caroline Springs and Ravenhall, increased by more than eight per cent to 4561 in the 12 months to December, 2015, according to the latest Crime Statistics Agency data. Taylors Hill Safety Committee chairman Ian Herbert said he would be raising under-staffing issues concerning the Caroline Springs police station at the group’s next meeting. “We agree they need more police, but it’s … a [Victoria] Police issue,” Mr Herbert said. “We’re in the hands of the police commissioner.”

Training, jobs gap closes Jobseekers with intellectual disabilities can access training and job services more readily through a new service in Bacchus Marsh. Mambourin, a not-for-profit organisation providing work, education and training opportunities for adults with intellectual disabilities so they can live more independently, opened its Main Street centre last week. Operations manager Michael Homann said there was a growing need for more service providers of this kind in the area. “There’s only one other service in this area,” he said. “We opened the Melton centre three years ago and we’ve grown significantly. “Some of our clients come from Bacchus Marsh and one of the main challenges for them is transport to get them to work or a course. “The Bacchus Marsh centre will work with

the Melton centre to meet the needs and wants of each individual, including opportunities to take part in work experience in assembly and packaging. There are few opportunities in this region for adults with intellectual disabilities, and Mambourin gives them work they’d never find otherwise.” Mambourin has eight other centres in the western suburbs offering a range of programs. “We do this by providing educational, recreational, vocational and life skill programs to state-funded participants along with federally funded supported employment at our various centres around the western suburbs,” Mr Homann said. A 33-year-old man with two teenagers in his vehicle was driving at more than 200km/h on the Western Freeway, according to police. A Holden sedan was impounded after police stopped the driver at Rockbank on May 4. The driver was charged with conduct endangering persons, excessive speed and other traffic-related offences. A second driver, a 45-year-old man in a Ford Mustang was interviewed by police on May 11 and released. Rescued horses on the way back By Sumeyya Ilanbey Moorabool volunteers are rehabilitating some of the 100 malnourished horses rescued from an Ararat property in February. Gordon-based Horse Shepherd Equine Sanctuary is taking care of most of the horses, which at the time of seizure by the RSPCA were severely under weight and exhibiting signs of malnutrition and muscle-wasting. Many were suffering from worms and parasites. The RSPCA said most of the horses had never been handled and only a few of the stallions and colts appeared to have been gelded. The seizure also included some foals and pregnant mares. Sanctuary president Anne Young said the horses had put on a lot of weight since the seizure. The stallions had been gelded and most had been handled. “We’re used to seeing horses in poor condition, but we’re not used to seeing it that bad and in that quantity,” Ms Young said. “We hope to find them new homes as soon as we can.” Meanwhile, Project Hope is working with several Moorabool residents to rehabilitate the malnourished horses. President Sue Kirkegard said people from across western Victoria had volunteered to donate their time to restore the horses to health and find long-term homes for them. It’s an opportunity for me to give something back to the animal that has given me such pleasure and love.” The rescue operation was the largest of its kind conducted in the state, with the RSPCA estimating the final bill, including the costs of the rescue, treatment, feeding and rehabilitation, to be more than $250,000.

RSPCA chief executive Liz Walker said the process of bringing the horses back to good health had been “slow and arduous”, but she expected them to be well enough to be “re-homed” in the next month. “We’re so grateful to our rescue partners for their incredible support and are very much looking forward to watching each of these beautiful animals leave us for safe, caring, forever homes,” Dr Walker said. “There’s no excuse for neglecting animals, and we implore all horse-owners to plan carefully for the welfare of their animals.” The RSPCA will be laying charges against the person from whom the animals were seized. Kick off that health push Western Bulldogs will kickstart a new season of their men’s health program in the western suburbs next month. The Sons of the West program has been a success since its launch three years ago, prompting it to be run from two venues in Melton this year. The free 10-week men’s health program, for blokes aged 18-80, is aimed at improving mental and physical health through activity sessions, workshops, talks and cooking classes. Melton mayor Kathy Majdlik urged all men to join the program, saying she was proud that Melton was one of six local councils to be running it.

“It’s very heartening to see more and more men taking part in this program each year and actively working towards improving their overall health,” she said. The Sons of the West program will run from 7-9pm every Tuesday from June 7 to August 9 at the Taylors Hill Youth and Community Centre, 121 Calder Park Drive. Moorabool councillor Paul Tatchell is preparing to shake up the Ballarat election race. Cr Tatchell confirmed last week he would run for the National Party in the July 2 federal election. He will be the party’s first candidate in the area since 1987. “If you had asked me four years ago if I would be running in a federal election I would have laughed,” he said. Cr Tatchell, who only recently joined the National Party, said his two years as mayor of Moorabool and his time as councillor sparked his interest in contesting the seat of Ballarat. “Have we moved forward in Ballarat? I want to bring some realism to the race,” he said. “A fair alternative, that is what Ballarat needs. “I think what has happened over a period of time is that it has become about the politics not the people.” Cr Tatchell said regional areas had been forgotten in many political circles and he wanted to draw attention to issues such as health, education and jobs. “We have one of the largest regional cities in Victoria and the hospital has been under-funded forever,” he said. “They have done works but it doesn’t keep up with the needs. “We have to do something about it. “We have 15 new regional primary schools getting built but none in Ballarat or in Bacchus Marsh, where they are putting portables on carparks.”

My connection to the shire is working for The Neighbours Place in Bacchus Marsh. Tell me a bit about your work at The Neighbour’s Place? The Neighbours Place is an emergency foodbank. It’s a Christian not-for-profit organisation with the aim of serving the people of the Moorabool Shire who are disadvantaged, at risk or unable to temporarily feed themselves or their families. We also provide no-interest loans and provide tax help from July to October. Why did you become involved with the service? I’ve been the co-ordinator at The Neighbours Place for almost three and a half years. It’s a very fulfilling feeling to be able to help the community. When people come in and you are able to give them food it’s a very good feeling. The Neighbours Place is currently looking for volunteers so we would be happy to hear from anyone wishing to do a bit of volunteering. What are some of the biggest challenges for service providers such as The Neighbour’s Place?

Challenges we face are numerous. As we are not government funded I am constantly applying for funding. With the growing population of Moorabool Shire the demand for our services only increases. Our aim and dream is to be able to provide sufficient food for families and individuals in need who seek our assistance. What’s the best part of your role? The best part of being a member of The Neighbours Place is that we are able to help an individual or a family with food and bring a smile to their faces. What do you love about the Bacchus Marsh community? The community and local businesses and churches are very generous with their help. It’s the community helping the community with TNP as the facilitator. A big thanks to the community and all the local business, schools and churches who help us. Djerriwarrh Community and Education Services has been given almost $1 million for a program designed to engage vulnerable youth with training opportunities. The funding is part of the state government’s Reconnect program to help early school-leavers or long-term unemployed young people prepare for training and work. Djerriwarrh Community and Education Services chief executive Trish Heffernan said the program allowed ‘Reconnect coaches’ to work one-on-one with young people from 16-24. “It’s not just about getting them into the job, but supporting them while they’re training or in the job,” Ms Heffernan said. “And we’ll be working with them to address any barriers they identify.” Ms Heffernan said there was a “real gap” for similar services last year after the federal government cut funding for the Youth Connections program in December, 2014. “There’s been a real gap for services to young people . . . so it’s great to see the state government announce funding. “And the federal government introduced the TTW [Transition to Work] program this year, so there are two programs for young people.” The program is expected to be rolled out in the next financial year. CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir reckons charcoal chicken could be a national dish … Charcoal chicken, it is sporadically suggested, is about to make a comeback. Charcoal chicken does go unacknowledged for its central role in Australian life. I even think it’s a strong contender for our national dish. But in other ways, to speak of a comeback is silly as charcoal chicken has gone nowhere. On the downside, I find such ruminations a little disturbing as they conjure up visions of hipsterised charcoal poultry with fussy, over-priced side dishes and a food genre stripped of the spunk that makes it such a favourite. Never mind, there will always be places that do it right … places such as Pier Street Charcoal Chicken. Everything about this place is old school – the furniture, the salad line-up, the menu, the locals coming and going at a rapid rate. The food, too, is old school – and very, very good. This is peak charcoal chicken. The coleslaw is fine, and more finely chopped than is often the case. The chips are fresh out of the frier and beaut. The tub of steaming hot gravy is wonderful for chip dipping. I envisaged that the gravy would be super for dipping the dry breast meat, too. This proves to be a pleasurable truth – but one that is completely unnecessary. Here, the breast meat is moist and tender. Yes – tender! Which is very unusual and

Well, I have good news. The waterproof Aquajam AJ2 Bluetooth speaker takes care of both tasks, and note that itâ€™s described not as splash-proof or water-resistant but as waterproof. To a depth of one metre in fact, for 30 minutes. What better way to spend $100?

And the AJ2 comes with a circular screw mount for bicycle handlebars and an adhesive mount. The instructions warn against using the adhesive mount on the porous surfaces of surfboards (water underneath the adhesive reduces its grip until â€Ś bye-bye AJ2). The charging is through a USB with the input at one end under a screw cap and then a tight-fitting rubber tab. This is an unconventional part of testing, but I know youâ€™re asking the question, so: immersion reduces volume by about two-thirds, but only to a depth of about three centimetres. Deeper and the music stops entirely. Maybe itâ€™s Bluetoothâ€™s limit. Bring it back to the surface and play resumes, but only gets to where it was when the excess water is shaken out. Upshot? The AJ2 is completely ineffective at scaring off sharks. Even when playing Ice Cube.

For the second week in a row, Damian Cupido booted 10 goals and Bacchus Marsh enjoyed a huge win in the Ballarat Football League. The Cobras smashed Ballarat on Saturday afternoon, winning by 131 points at Maddingley Park. Bacchus Marsh didn’t have everything fall its way though, as the Cobras had to fight hard during a tough first quarter. However, the longer the match went, the more the home side looked in command. At the defensive end, the Cobras were in complete control, conceding just two goals for the second and third terms. While inside the Bacchus Marsh attacking 50, Cupido was again the star of the show. The former Brisbane and Essendon AFL player has 20 goals from two matches since signing with Bacchus Marsh earlier this month. The 28.14 (182) - 8.3 (51) win maintains the Cobras’ hold over second place on the BFL ladder. They trail Lake Wendouree by one game.

A step toward dream By Tara Murray Hume City’s Matthew Farrugia is doing all the right things to achieve his dream of playing in the A-league. The 16-year-old has made the move from state league to the National Premier League and recently joined a prestigious soccer college. The next step is travelling to China with his Melbourne City College of Football teammates to compete at the International School Soccer Tournament in Shanghai. The college, which is based at John Fawkner College, will represent Australia at the tournament in July. Involving 16 teams, the tournament is being hosted by the Chinese Ministry of Education, Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese and the Shanghai City Government. Melbourne City College of Football was picked after it finished runners-up at the School Sport Victoria state finals.

Farrugia said he was thrilled to get the opportunity to travel to China. “I’m really excited and looking forward to it,” he said. “They selected 21 students and five staff to go. There was a selection process and it was based on education, work ethic and performance. I definitely thought I was a chance of being picked.” The Rockbank resident, who bases his game on Socceroo Mathew Leckie (who grew up in Melton), says he expects the tournament to be another level above what he plays in Australia He said the communication barrier was something else that would test the group. It’s been a big couple of years for Farrugia who not only changed schools but clubs to follow his sporting dream. “I moved schools from Melton this year,” he said. “We had to trial to attend the [John Fawkner] school and try to get in one of three different programs. “There are the community, development and

elite programs. It was a hard selection with over 200 students applying. I got in the elite program.” Farrugia, who normally plays on the right or left wing, started his soccer at state league side Spring Hills, and now plays for National Premier League club, Hume City. Five of his Hume City teammates are part of the team which will travel to China. “State league was a bit easier than the NPL, which is a harder competition,” he said. “It’s a lot more challenging and I’m always looking for a challenge.” Long term, Farrugia wants to progress through the age groups at Hume City before hopefully playing in the top competition in Australia. “Hopefully I’ll make an A-League side, it’s the dream,” he said. Caroline Springs enjoyed a day out in the Western Region Football League second division on Saturday. The Lakers smashed West Footscray by 235 points, 38.18 (246) - 1.5 (11). Brian Lake was the star for Caroline Springs, booting 11 goals. Also impressive were Nathan Knuckey and Jason Degabriele who kicked nine majors between them. In total, 15 Caroline Springs’ players kicked at least one goal. On the back of the win, the Lakers moved from third to first on the division 2 ladder. It also served as a huge percentage boost, with Caroline Springs jumping from 243 to 314 per cent.

It was a tough day at the office for Melton Centrals in the Riddell District Netball League on Saturday. The Centrals went down to Riddell by 30 goals, 56-26. Bloods fade but hold on By Liam Twomey Melton secured its biggest win of the Ballarat Football League season, knocking off East Point by 17 points on Saturday. The Bloods set the win up in a blistering first half in which they booted nine goals to East Point’s four. But after holding a 32-point lead at half-time, Melton had to fend off a spirited fightback. East Point closed the margin to 20 points at three-quarter-time and was coming home with the wind for the final 30 minutes. But Melton steadied and kicked a goal late in the fourth term to seal a 11.12 (78)-9.7 (61) win. Melton coach Brad Murphy admitted there were nervous moments in the second half. “We were five or six goals up at half-time and I was pretty happy,” Murphy said. “We had the wind in the third quarter and I expected us to extend that to an eight or nine and make it difficult for them to peg it back. “But we went to sleep a little bit and thought the wind was going to do it for us. “ Leading the charge for Melton was captain Jake Gleeson, who has been named his side’s outright best player three times in the first four games of the season. “I’m that proud of that man . . . he’s an out-and-out superstar,” Murphy said. “He doesn’t get the respect he deserves from other coaches or even through interleague. “His hardness, his toughness, his physicality and his demands on his teammates to be better, it is what a real captain is. He’s a fantastic captain and a fantastic player.” On the back of the win, Melton moved to third place on the BFL ladder with a 3-1 record. Following a break for the interleague match against the WRFL this week, the Bloods will take on Bacchus Marsh in round six.

Diggers Rest maintained its place on top of the Riddell District Football League ladder with a vital win against Rupertswood at the weekend. Despite playing away from home, the Burras settled the quicker of the two sides early and kicked the only three goals of the opening term to hold an 18-point lead at the first break. While Rupertswood was able to hit the scoreboard at the resumption of play, it didn’t take long for the Burras to kick away again. Five goals to three in the third term increased the margin to 32 points and all but sealed the win for the visitors. Diggers Rest had nine individual goalkickers in the 13.9 (87)-7.10 (52) victory, Luke Smailes leading the way with three. Taylor Hine was again among the best for the Burras. Since signing in the off season, Hine has been named in his side’s best players in four of his five matches. He has also kicked four goals. Tom Evans and Michael Evans were also impressive for the Burras. After five rounds of the RDFL season, Diggers Rest and Macedon have separated themselves from the chasing pack. Both have won all five, but the Burras hold top spot by just .65 per cent. Lancefield, Riddell, Wallan and the Sunbury Kangaroos are all on three wins.

The Korean-maker’s SUVs were once timid affairs, with lacklustre looks that dated as soon as they rolled off the production line. The past several years have seen great improvement in the Kia range, which has become a force to be reckoned with in the cut-throat SUV market. With the Sorento,

Kia has taken the improvement up another notch and this has been recognised with good sales and a swag of awards. The latest Sorento is bigger than previous models and feels nice and solid on the road but is by no means a truck. It has nice sweeping lines more reminiscent of the European SUVs than its direct competitors from Japan. I drove the top-spec Platinum model, which includes extras such as leather-appointed

seats and panoramic sunroof. The driver is well catered for with a 10-way electronic multi-adjustment seat and electric steering wheel adjustment with two memory settings. Space is good and there’s plenty of storage for odds and sods. It even has heating for the wood-look steering wheel, which I didn’t get to test because of the mild weather. I’m thinking a steering wheel cooler would be more beneficial for Australian conditions. Entertainment and comms are displayed

on a seven-inch screen which does the business well. This comes with a 10-speaker sound system with amplifier that sounds the business. The seven-seater provides plenty of comfort in the middle row, with heaps of leg and headroom and nifty little sunscreens you can slide over the back door windows. The two rear-most seats, which fold up from the floor of the large rear cargo area, provide relative comfort for two adults so shouldn’t trouble children at all. I drove the test vehicle to Hanging Rock with six adult passengers and the two sitting down the back reckoned they were pretty comfortable. Everyone noticed how smooth and quiet the Sorento was as we drove up the Calder Highway. The suspension is firm, tuned for Australian conditions and body roll is remarkably subtle for such a car. It’s built for comfort. But even with seven adults weighting it down it had no issues with performance, thanks to the 2.2-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine that provides a nice balance between power and economy – I averaged 8.1 litres/100 kilometres during the week I had it, which is good for a car this size. Lower spec models have a 3.3-litre V6 petrol engine with the diesel turbo as an option costing an extra $3500. The Platinum is replete with active safety features including all-wheel drive, active cruise control, blind spot detection, hill-start assist, emergency stop signal, reverse camera, rear cross traffic control. This is a hell of a lot of car for about $61,000 drive away, and compares incredibly well with similarly equipped competitors. The base model Si starts at $45,000 drive away.
