Ballarat line’s double joy The state government is committing $518 million to duplicate the Ballarat railway line between Melton and Deer Park. A further $2.4 million will be spent on an extra 270 parking bays at Melton train station and a sealed carpark on the southern side of Rockbank station. As part of the multi-million dollar package, Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan announced during last week’s state budget that: • Second platforms will be built at Bacchus Marsh and Ballan stations. • The existing platforms at Rockbank station will be extended by more than 50 metres.
• New stabling facilities will be built at Melton and Rowsley to house the extra carriages. • Additional crossing loops will be built at Bacchus Marsh, Ballan and Bungaree. The package of works will allow for two extra services during the morning and afternoon peaks and a train every 40 minutes in off-peak hours. The state government expects to spend about $31 million in the next financial year on the line’s duplication, $196.4 million in 2017-18, $268.7 in 2018-19, and more than $20 million in 2019-20. Construction works are expected to start next year and finish in 2019. But there was no financial commitment to electrify the line in this year’s budget. Instead,

funding will be provided to plan a business case study for future electrification. Melton resident Dotty Hazell’s two teenage sons use the V/Line trains to go to school – one heads west to Ballarat, the other to Footscray. Ms Hazell said she was “dubious” about the announcement significantly affecting travel times between Melton and Ballarat, but it could “only be a good thing” for travel to Melbourne. “It’s currently taking longer to use public transport than it is to drive,” she said. “At some parts of the day, it can take up to two hours to get from Melbourne to Bacchus Marsh.” Melton council has long advocated for
Ballarat railway line upgrades, identifying it as a priority project in the National Growth Areas Alliance’s ‘Fund Our Future’ campaign and forming the Ballarat Rail Action Committee. Council advocacy projects co-ordinator Tennille Bradley welcomed last week’s announcement, saying it was “incredible news” for Melton commuters. “Duplication of the Ballarat railway line between Deer Park and Melton will ensure a 20-minute train frequency during peak hours and will enhance rail services in the City of Melton to a metro-standard service … that most other Melbourne suburbs are already ablt access,” she said. ■ Budget

‘Drug car’: cleaner jailed A Hillside cleaner has been jailed for 15 years for importing more than 23 kilograms of pure methamphetamine stored inside a car. Besim Beqiri pleaded not guilty to attempting to possess a commercial quantity of a border-controlled drug, saying he was an “innocent dupe”. But Judge Felicity Hampel said evidence showed he was part of a sophisticated, highly organised and well-planned scheme involving drugs with a street value of almost $30 million. “The quantity of drugs involved was significant,” she said.
A sentencing hearing in the County Court on April 8 heard that customs officers found the drugs in the rear- quarter panels of a 1967 Chevrolet Impala imported from California on September 4, 2014. The drugs were replaced with another substance, the car was tracked and an investigation began with telephone intercepts and tracking and listening devices. The car was eventually delivered to Beqiri’s Hillside house on September 11. He was arrested two weeks later. Despite his denials, the court heard that
Beqiri, 43, was arranging the importation of the car as early as May 2014. Judge Hampel said Beqiri’s sole role was to import the vehicle and provide “safe storage” for it in his garage until the drugs were removed. “Beqiri’s defence was that he was an innocent dupe who imported the car in good faith for his own use and was unaware that drugs were concealed in it,” Judge Hampel said. Cops despair at road blitz results The Anzac Day weekend road blitz picked up 36 speeding drivers on Melton roads. Operation Tribute also detected six disqualified drivers, six unlicensed drivers, three traffic light breaches and two drivers not wearing seatbelts. One car was impounded. Police said that across the state, one in every 12 drivers tested for drugs returned a positive result, while one in 564 was nabbed for driving above the legal alcohol limit. Inspector John Fitzpatrick said it was disappointing to see a continual flouting of the law. “We say it every long weekend, every day, yet people continue to put their lives and the lives of those around them on the line,” he said. “Nearly 7000 traffic offences were detected statewide across the weekend, as well as more than 800 criminal offences. “The numbers continue to astound us. We also had three fatalities over the weekend, the same as last year and three too many. “If we continue to lose lives on the road at the rate we’re going, the number of lives lost on our roads will surpass 300 [this year]. “Road safety is everyone’s responsibility. We need everyone to share the roads and look after each other by taking responsibility for their actions and we need them to start today.” Esther Lauaki

Katarina Butigan and her partner Anthony Cook were devastated by the death of their daughter during childbirth on August 4, 2014. “It wasn’t supposed to be a complicated birth but all of a sudden I was rushed in for a c-section … and our daughter passed away during my c-section,” Ms Butigan said. House prices in Caroline Springs jumped almost 10 per cent in the first three months of the year, placing it in the top five growth suburbs in Melbourne. The median house price in the suburb rose from $520,000 in December to $570,000 in March, according to Real Estate Institute of Victoria (REIV) figures. Meanwhile, median unit prices went up by 6.5 per cent to $330,000 in the same period. Melbourne’s outer suburbs, including Epping, Werribee and Doreen, led a strong growth in price rises in the three-month period, with REIV president Geoff White attributing this to “buyers [looking] for value”. “Twelve of the top 20 growth suburbs were in outer Melbourne,” he said. “This signals continuing buying demand as home buyers look for value further from the CBD.” Caroline Springs YPA director Joel Rawle said he wasn’t surprised by the suburb’s strong growth as it was an “ideal” location for young families and first-home buyers. He said relatively easy access to the CBD, proximity to major shopping centres and the number of schools in the area were appealing. Meanwhile, in Truganina houses are being built at a rapid rate. According to the latest Housing Institute of Australia’s Population and Residential Building Hotspots report, Truganina was the ninth-strongest market in the country for new-home building and population growth. The report shows residential building works valued at more than $200 million were approved in Truganina in the year to last June 30. .

Police are looking for two offenders who broke into a residence in Arnolds Creek Boulevard, Melton West, about 3.30am on April 23. The offenders had their faces covered by ski masks when they went to the master bedroom and confronted the male and female occupants, who had been asleep. School library on a roll When a Gisborne carpenter donated a mobile library to Melton South Primary School last year, pupils and teachers unleashed their creativity. What better way to instil in children the love of reading than with a Dr Seuss, and Mr & Mrs-themed cart, the senior pupils suggested. And school arts teacher Melissa Spencer started painting. The mobile trolleys have been rolled out into the schoolyards to allow pupils to grab a
book, sit under the sun (or shade) and immerse themselves into mythical worlds. “Those quieter kids … it gives them something to do,” Ms Spencer said. “Those who choose not to play sport, they can go grab a book, find a friend and sit down to read.” Ms Spencer said the mobile library fills a gap as the school library is only open during selected recess and lunch times. The runaway moggy climbed inside the skip outside the McCarthy family’s butcher shop last Thursday and was accidentally locked in. That was when 10-year-old Ava took to social media via #prayforelliott to let her almost 2000 followers know five-month-old Elliott was missing. The skip’s owner contacted the family a day later to tell them she had seen a cat running from a quarry used as a tip in Bacchus Marsh. Mum Angie said the family searched the area around the quarry. “We got a phone call at 3.15pm on Friday [week] asking us if we’d happened to be missing a kitten,” she said. “We raced up there to see if he would respond to us calling his name while searching the massive quarry, but he didn’t. “We rang all the vets and pounds and all the quarry workers knew what was going on, too. “We took Ava up there, but seeing her crying broke our hearts. “Our family is Christian so we just prayed to God for a sign. Ava is quite strong in her faith and that’s why she rallied her friends to pray for Elliott, too.” The breakthrough came on Tuesday when a Bacchus Marsh woman recognised Elliott from photos shared on a lost pet’s Facebook page. “A lady in the new estate behind the quarry, about 70 kilometres from where he disappeared, phoned on Tuesday and said she’d seen Elliott,” Mrs McCarthy says. “She said he’d come in the night before and was quite persistent and

she thought it was the neighbour’s cat so kept putting him back outside. “It’s a miracle and we’re so thankful for all the animal lovers.” Ava, who’s in year five at Bannockburn Primary School, says she jumped for joy when she heard the good news.
She said Elliott, named after her favourite Collingwood player, Jamie Elliott, would now be kept close to home. “It was great having everyone’s support online because everyone was using #prayforelliott,” she said. “I’ll be telling his story to everyone now.”

Melton bridge reinforced Roadworks on Melton’s High Street bridge have finished and vehicle load limits have been removed. Lanes in both directions on High Street, between Melton Valley Drive and Yuille Street, were closed for three weeks in February while VicRoads carried out works on the bridge as part of the federal government’s Bridges Renewal Program. Victorian senator Scott Ryan inspected the completed works and said the bridge’s structure had been strengthened and the 30-tonne load limit removed, meaning trucks would be able to pass through High Street. “The Bridges Renewal Program extends the lifespan of vital pieces of infrastructure, such as this bridge, and will minimise the amount of maintenance work required in the years ahead,” Senator Ryan said. Steel safety barriers and guard rails were installed, a new bridge deck built and the existing footpath extended to the Melton Valley Drive intersection as part of the works. Daryl Lang, the federal Liberal candidate for the Gorton electorate, thanked the community for its patience during the bridge’s closure. “The High Street bridge is an important piece of infrastructure and this project ensures it will continue to serve the Gorton electorate for many years to come,” he said. Housing stress relief on way By Esther Lauaki Struggling elderly residents need not live in poor-quality housing thanks to a new state government-funded program. Home at Last, launched last month by Moorabool council, is an early-intervention and pre-crisis response program for older people experiencing housing instability and living in insecure, unaffordable private rental homes. Housing for the Aged Action Group manager Jeff Feidler said an alliance of key
agencies, including Moorabool Shire Council, Aged Care Assessment Services, Djerriwarrh Health Services and other service providers and government departments, would work together to address those issues. “Older people have a right to a decent home in their retirement years, but increasing numbers of older people are struggling to survive” he said. “General issues for this at risk group include, market forces, illness or age-related disability, low income or pensioner status, low levels of life-savings such as superannuation, loss

of a loved one or family breakdown forcing a person to cope with paying rent on one income.” Mr Feidler said home ownership rates were declining across the nation and Australia’s population was ageing. He said many elderly residents were forced to rent in the unregulated
private market because of a lack of public investment over the years. “We need smaller units with appropriate accessibility,” Mr Feidler said. The latest housing data shows there were more than 300 people of 60 or older renting in insecure private rental accommodation in Moorabool in 2011, an 86 per cent increase over the five-year period from 2006. The duos’ crowdfunding campaign has now reached more than $300 on GoFundMe, but they hope to raise $1500 for the Orange Pigeon foundation, which grants wishes for adults living with terminal illness. “I saw that a friend of mine cut her hair for charity and I thought, what a great idea,” Ms Wahlert said. “I was getting sick of my hair being long so I wanted to do something to help other people. The last time I wore my hair short, I was 10.” It will be Alicia’s very first haircut and Ms Wahlert’s first in 16 years.

Relief at high school pledge By Sumeyya Ilanbey After years of campaigns, the state government has put aside $12 million in the state budget to build a secondary school in Taylors Hill. Land was acquired last year for a years 10-12 school, but Sydenham MP Natalie Hutchins announced on Wednesday the state government would commit to building a years 7-12 secondary school. Ms Hutchins said the government was in negotiations with the owners of several sites around Taylors Hill and expected the school to be ready in 2018. “Unfortunately, and fortunately, we have significant growth between Taylors Hill and Rockbank,” she said. “I’d expect we’ll see those places [at the new school] taken up really quickly. “Taylors Hill Primary School opened only four years ago and is already over-capacity. “We have the largest primary school on a single site in the state – Parkwood Green – and that has more than 1200 students. There’s definitely demand.” More than 5000 people signed a petition, tabled in Parliament by Ms Hutchins a few months ago, calling on the state government to set aside funds for a secondary school in the area. The state budget showed Taylors Hill Secondary College as among nine other new schools to be built across the state, including a primary school in Tarneit West. While there was a positive reaction to
the news on social media, many questioned when the school would be built and how long it would take. “About time,” one social media user commented. “But seriously, should have been done a long time ago.”

The state government has also committed funding for master-planning future improvement works to Melton West Primary School and Melton Secondary School; to acquire land in Burnside for a primary school; a ‘Doctors in Secondary School’ program, which will run at Bacchus Marsh, Staughton, Melton and Kurunjang secondary schools; and upgrades to Melton Specialist School. Melton mayor Kathy Majdlik welcomed the budget announcements, adding it was “amazing news” for the municipality. “This is a reward [of] many years of consistent hard work and lobbying by councillors and council officers to state government ministers, department officials and officers,” she said. “This is a massive investment that will serve the needs of our growing community into the future.” No new schools were announced for Moorabool.

Ballan’s fire brigade is calling on the government to back a new Country Fire Authority training pad at Fiskville. The state budget, handed down last week, responded to the closure of CFA Fiskville by providing $46.2 million to establish a new firefighting training centre in the Central Highlands and upgrade the training facility at Huntly. State briefs ‘Explain non-funding’: council
Moorabool council is calling on the state government to explain why urgent roadworks in Bacchus Marsh were left off the state budget projections last week. “It’s particularly disappointing that the Bacchus Marsh package of roadworks previously announced by the state government and partly funded by this government have not been announced in the forward projections,” chief executive Rob Croxford said. He said $25 million was still missing from the total $38 million promised in last year’s budget. “We thank the federal government for the $10 million and the state for $3 million to complete the Halletts Way freeway ramps to the western freeway,” Mr Croxford said. “We now call on the state government and VicRoads to explain where the balance of these urgently required works are.” A CFA officer wants Fiskville to be re-opened. Millions for college upgrade
Plans to upgrade Bacchus Marsh college are a step closer with the Victorian government announcing further funding for an upgrade of the Maddingley campus. Moorabool council chief executive Rob Croxford said it was “encouraging” to see a further $3 million committed to upgrading the cramped Bacchus Marsh secondary college following the $5 million announced at the previous election. He acknowledged there was no funding for a secondary college at Ballan, which local parents had rallied

Cloudburst of cash
A funding boost announced last week could end Bacchus Marsh’s water and irrigation woes. About $4.5 million will be invested in the Bacchus Marsh irrigation district modernisation as part of a statewide move to improve water and irrigation infrastructure in the regions. “This will complement the Southern Rural Water investment and we now call on the federal government to match the state funding to provide improved water security for Bacchus Marsh irrigators and certainty to significant employers and industry,” Moorabool chief executive Rob Croxford said.

Almost $3 million has been committed by the Victorian government to refurbish 15 police stations including Bacchus Marsh. And $401 million will go to Corrections Victoria to improve its raft of services and upgrade the Metropolitan Remand Centre in Ravenhall. The projects are at the heart of a $1 billion state budget package to crack down on crime and target high-risk offenders. The government also increased mental health funding statewide, and it will fund action against the methamphetamine ice epidemic, including a 20-bed facility in Ballarat.

Works to keep bacteria at bay By Esther Lauaki Work has started on building a new $2.9 million sterile supply unit at Bacchus Marsh and Melton Regional Hospital. Initial preparation of the new hospital site began in early February, with the removal of 40 truckloads of soil and work on site trenches, drainage measures and retaining walls. The project made a significant leap last week with the pouring of a 120-cubic metre concrete
foundation slab on the 450-square metre site. The project is expected to be completed by December. Djerriwarrh Health Services administrator John Ballard said the new development was another important milestone in the continued transformation of Djerriwarrh Health Services. “At Djerriwarrh, we are continuing to get on with the job of compassionately and professionally caring for the community we serve,” Dr Ballard said.

It was the best result we’ve ever had.” Mr Hynam said many of the teams had their sights set firmly on the Australasian Emergency Games on the Sunshine Coast in October. “It’s great to hear many of them want to go further and compete at the Australasian Games, but I’ll have to have a think about whether I’d like to do the same.” His training regime hasn’t been easy as he contends with two knee injuries and aching shoulders, which he puts downs to working more than 25 years in corrections.

Bruce Hynam proved just how much of a sharp-shooter he is at the recent Victoria Police and Emergency Services Games. The Darley clay target shooter picked up gold and bronze medals at the Games, whose venues throughout April were at Phillip Island, Werribee, Traralgon, Ballarat, Bendigo and Geelong. Police, paramedics, firefighters and SES volunteers, lifesavers, corrections officers and customs officers were among the 3000 competitors vying for the Inter-Services Trophy at the Games. Mr Hynam was one of 33 staff who represented Port Phillip Prison in nine sports categories. He said he went into his clay shooting event just hoping to do well. “It was heavily contested and it’s always good to have some good competition. “There’s some friendly rivalry and a lot of light-hearted banter; it’s all fun.” His team won five gold, five bronze and seven silver medals.

Nipper’s a ripper barber Generous souls at a Burnside child care centre have spearheaded a Deer Park man’s goal to raise $2000 for cancer research. Ryan Blyth shaved his hair for the World’s Great Shave at the Goodstart Early Learning Centre on April 15 in front of family, friends and centre kids, with Ryan’s three-year-old nephew Eli doing the honours with the clippers. The 22-year-old had said whoever donated the most money could shave his hair and pick the setting. The centre chipped in a whopping $650, more than half of the $1200 Ryan has
raised so far for people living with leukaemia, and nominated Eli as barber for the deed. “I just wanted to help out and give back,” Ryan said. “One of my mum’s cousins has cancer. He’s doing all right. “Eli had a ball cutting my hair – he was loving it. I’m liking my new hairdo. MY PLACE Former Carlton AFL player Jake Edwards, 28, has now dedicated himself to helping Moorabool youth living with depression. Darley’s favourite son spoke to Esther Lauaki about his latest venture – Outside the Locker Room.
I spent five years playing for the Darley Football Club and I grew up in Exford so I have a strong connection to the area. How did your youth welfare program Outside the Locker Room come about? I was living the dream as a young man and got drafted into the Blues at 17. I had everything – a great family, financially very well off, a great group of friends. I was diagnosed with depression at 19 and everything turned out to be too much. I became addicted to drugs, my football career slipped away. On the back of my experience, I can see the frustrations between the parents and the kids who are going through the same thing I was. What is Outside The Locker Room all about? I work as a youth development officer and last year Moorabool council granted us $4000 in funding to roll the program out in local footy clubs. We’ve been working closely with AFL Goldfields to roll out the program in regional areas of Victoria. There’s a massive need for a program to help young people get help for problems with
mental health, drugs and depression. Outside the Locker Room is a program for 10 to 18-year-olds at sporting clubs that provides education and support to ease them through the daily challenges they might face with drugs, alcohol, mental health and self-esteem. What does it mean to you to help youth in Moorabool? For me it’s very personal given that I grew up in the area and I went to Melton Secondary College. Because I grew up in the area, I see the challenges that youth today face and they are drugs, alcohol and depression. A lot of these kids I know. They are from farming backgrounds and when they finish school they end up working on the farm, they meet up with mates for drinks on the weekends, that can lead to drinking more frequently and potentially lead to dabbling in drugs. The issue is with resources in central Victoria. These kids just don’t have access to these services. But they do have access to footy clubs and that’s where we can help. I want to encourage youth to speak up when they have a problem. I want them to feel like they’re not alone. For information: www.outsidethelockerroom.com.au

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir fights off burger burnout . . . and he’s glad he did Consider The Sauce has addressed Melbourne’s fixation with burgers a couple of times in recent months. We’ve even been known to mutter about burger burnout. So what do we do? We eat more of them! This is not a burden when the ones we try are so very, very good. And it’s a special pleasure when we find them at places that are not part of the developing burger scene as such. First, there was the fabulous burger ’n’ chips combo at Searz in Newport. Next, it’s twin Gemelli burgers at a newish cafe/grill in Point Cook. Recently opened Gemelli is already a big hit with locals. And so it should be! It’s in a commercial precinct on the opposite side of the freeway from Williams Landing station. So new is the neighbourhood that there’s building activity aplenty. But for locals, and the overwhelming majority of them around here are young families, there’s not a lot about in terms of food so Gemelli surely seems like a gift. So much so that perhaps we’re chancing our arm a little by hoping to simply waltz in for a midweek dinner. But all is good as we wait just a few minutes for a table to be cleared. Among the various comments I’ve seen from

We talk to a few of them and find they’re all locals and that for most of them this is their first serious job. We find them all cheerful and capable and the service is top-notch. As you’d expect, the dining space has a “family restaurant� feel – and if there’s a bit of shopping centre food court vibe going on as well, it’s soon forgotten as we get to grips with our dinner. A large serve of “Italian herb and parmesan� fries ($6.50) is not particularly cheesy, but the chips are fine, hot and tasty. A small bowl of aioli is provided on request. We both choose, from a line-up numbering six, the top-of-the-line Gemelli Burger ($14), which is described as “2 homemade beef patty, 2 X cheese, Berkshire bacon, lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, relish, burger sauce�. Sometimes, new channels and old tellies don’t mix. Nine’s new high-definition channel uses a video format that may confound your old television and digital set-top box. New Year’s Day marked 15 years since digital television kicked off in Australia. The number of channels has more than tripled since then – but unfortunately some early digital television gear is unable to move with the times. Many early digital televisions and set-top boxes featured only standard-definition TV tuners, meaning they’re not capable of receiving the five high-definition channels – ONE 1, ABC News 24, SBS HD 30, 7Mate 70 and 9HD 90. But if you’ve got an HD-capable set-top box it should be able to convert these channels to SD for an old television. There’s another complication – Australia’s broadcasters are beginning to shift to the more bandwidth-efficient MPEG-4 video format, but some of Australia’s early digital television equipment supported only MPEG-2. Anything with a Freeview logo on it is MPEG-4 compatible. If you can’t see Nine’s new HD simulcast on Channel 90 or the racing on Channel 78 but you can see the other HD channels, then your digital tuners probably don’t support MPEG-4. It’s worth scanning for new channels and checking whether there’s a setting in the menus to enable MPEG-4. Things will get worse next year, with Seven and the ABC introducing HD simulcasts that are also expected to use MPEG-4. You won’t lose these channels completely because the networks are retaining their SD digital broadcasts on ABC, Seven and Nine,

Stallions break out of canter Spring Hills is beginning to enjoy its surroundings in state league 4 west soccer. On the back of a championship victory in state league 5 west last year, the Stallions were promoted in the off-season and aleady have met with stiff competition. Spring Hills conceded 12 goals in its opening two games and it was starting to look as though the jump in class might be too great. But the Stallions rebounded, showing their trademark fight and determination to secure their first-ever state league 4 win, by 2-1 against Balmoral last month. Coaching director Tom Markovski said it was a great thrill for everyone at the club. “We started off poorly in the first two games,” he said. “Especially the second one [against Bell Park] … we were up 2-1, then it was just a bit of inexperience from the boys. “Then we got our win. We were probably unlucky not to get another couple of goals, but it was a great day for us.” That fourth-round win was follow by a 3-2 victory against Truganina Hornets. Spring Hills will take on Newmarket Phoenix this week before one of its biggest matches of the season when, for the first time, the Stallions will host local rival Melton. Markovski said the biggest lesson his players needed to learn was that there would be no let-up of pressure. “I think there’s probably a group of five or six teams that are going for the league and then five or six that will fight it out for the opposite end,” he said. “The opposition is definitely better and we need to get used to that. “I don’t think there are any teams in this league where you can think you’re definitely going to get three points … it just depends on the day.” The Spring Hills women’s team has also enjoyed a positive start to the season. Having formed during the off-season, the state league 4 outfit won its opening match 10-1. After three rounds, it’s in second spot, having conceded just one goal for the year.
A final-quarter flurry of goals from Sunbury handed Darley back-to-back losses in the Ballart Football League. Last year’s premier has won just one of its first three matches. Coming off a loss against local rival Bacchus Marsh the week before, it was a fired-up Darley that attacked the contest in front of its home fans. The Devils booted six first-quarter goals against Sunbury and had 10 scoring shots to take a nine-point lead into the opening break. Then, through a seesawing hour, both sides enjoyed stretches with the momentum in their favour. Sunbury went into half-time with a two-point lead then Darley’s Leigh Spiteri, Jarrod Edwards and Luke Delahey helped return control to the home side. The Devils kicked the first goal of the final term to hold a 12-point advantage. But just as Darley looked to be running away, Sunbury hit back. Grant Valles got the ball rolling, kicking the first goal of the run and it was Jack Sheahan who put the Lions in front. Nathan Wood and Jake Steeper then put the icing on the cake, adding another two goals to seal the win for Sunbury. Up forward for the Devils, Spiteri, Mitchell Banner and Rhys Ellis finished with three goals each, while Shane Page and Harley Inglis worked hard around the ground. After three rounds, Darley is in fifth spot on the BFL ladder. Elsewhere at the weekend, Melton secured its best win of the season, over Sebastopol by 69 points. After taking a one-point lead into quartertime, the Bloods flicked the switch at the resumption. Melton booted a staggering nine second quarter goals to blow the match open. It wasn’t just at the attacking end that the Bloods dominated. Defensively, Melton conceded just one goal in the first half. Their 14.20 (104) to 4.11 (35) win is the Bloods’ second of the season. Melton has the bye this week. In other round three results, Bacchus Marsh came up short against East Point, going down by 38 points, while Melton South lost to Redan by 78.

Darley was unable to capitalise on a strong first half in the Ballarat Netball League at the weekend. The Devils made the early running against Sunbury before a late Lions’ fightback swung the momentum. Thanks to some strong shooting from the likes of Tara Parker (pictured), Darley led by a goal at half-time before Sunbury found its range at the resumption of play. The Lions scored 16 majors in the third term to take a three-goal advantage into the final quarter. Darley’s best efforts were unable to reel in the deficit as it went down 41-38. The loss was the Devils’ first for the season after strong wins against Bacchus Marsh and Melton South. Darley will take on Lake Wendouree this week. In other round-three results, East Point defeated Bacchus Marsh and Sebastopol was too good for Melton.

With both teams having started the season in good form, it was Brimbank that was able to turn its momentum into scoreboard pressure. The Stallions kicked the only goal for the first half. Despite Melton’s best efforts, it was scoreless for the rest of the afternoon. Brimbank kicked another goal at the resumption of play before running out a one-goal winner. After five rounds, Brimbank is undefeated on top of the table. The Stallions also hold a goal difference of 14. Melton is fifth. In other results from the weekend, Point Cook defeated Altona North and Sebastopol was too good for Balmoral.

A fast-finishing Caroline Springs left itself too much work to do in the Western Region Football League’s division 2 competition on Saturday. The Lakers succumbed to Yarraville-Seddon by four points, 11.8 (74)-10.10 (70). Yarraville blew the game open in the third term, kicking four goals to none to take a 29-point lead. Caroline Springs closed the gap in the final minutes, but was unable to do enough to secure the win. Saturday was the Lakers’ first loss for the season, while Yarraville remains undefeated. Cats hold on for the win By Liam Twomey One bad quarter was all that stood between the Melton Centrals and an upset win in the Riddell District Football League on Saturday. Taking on the highly touted Macedon, the Centrals showed why they have been one of the big improvers to start the season, going goal-for-goal with the Cats in the first half. Trailing by just five points at the main break, Melton needed to ensure its level didn’t drop at the resumption of play. However, it was Macedon that came out of the rooms ready to make a move. The Cats’ defence locked Melton down, conceding just one goal for the quarter. There were no such scoring problems at the other end, with the Cats finding their range inside 50. Macedon booted 7.2 to streak ahead to a 41-point lead at the final change. Despite a win being out of reach, the Centrals continued to fight, kicking six goals to three in the final term to cut the margin to 25 points.
