Hooning trumps charity A hot rod charity event in support of Bacchus Marsh Hospital has been cancelled over fears that hoons would gatecrash it. Steve Costa, organiser of the free annual Costa Panels hot rod barbecue, called off the fundraiser last week and said a more suitable and safer venue had to be found. The event, due to be held last weekend, has been a regular fixture in the community for 15 years. Mr Costa said it had raised money for ancillary items for the hospital. “We used to hold the barbecue every year, but we’ve had to cancel it for the second consecutive year because it has started to get out of hand,” he said. “It began as a barbecue for our customers outside the workshop, because we used to work on most of the cars of nurses and staff at the hospital, we decided we could raise money for Bacchus Marsh Hospital. “We raised enough for small things that the hospital might not otherwise have money in the budget for; things like televisions for the waiting room or a coffee machine.” In recent years the barbecue had grown to attract more than 100 vehicles and hundreds of visitors, including illegal road-racing groups. “In the early years, about 30 cars would show up and customers would come in with their families for some food,” Mr Costa said. “It was just a fun day out. The only rule was that you couldn’t come without a car. “It all started off as a bit of fun when people would do a burnout as they were
driving off. But as the event got bigger, it attracted that Holden Commodore crowd and drag racers, and we had people doing doughnuts everywhere and it was getting dangerous. “They would be doing these doughnuts and there would be women and children nearby. “It was being treated as a drag-racing meet instead of a charity barbecue. “We tried to tell them to stop and we’d speak to the police about it and they would come down.

“We even moved the event to another location, but they just found us and they’d show up again.” Mr Costa says he will continue to search for a better venue so the event can be revived. Djerriwarrh Health Services chief executive Andrew Freeman said the support of the Bacchus Marsh and Melton communities was paramount for Djerriwarrh Health Services. “Official hospital fund-raising initiatives are vital for Djerriwarrh,” he said. “While it’s unfortunate that this informal charity event has had to be cancelled in recent years, ensuring the safety of the local community should be the number one priority when hosting events of this nature. “We support the decision of the organisers to suspend the event on public safety grounds.”

School principal Rachelle Hedger said a number of community organisations, including the Diggers Rest Lions Club, came together to commemorate those who fought, served and lost their lives in WWI. “The ceremony [was] at the cenotaph near the school … and we commemorated fallen soldiers and nurses who served in World War I,” Ms Hedger said. Pet dog falls prey to glass bait By Sumeyya Ilanbey The RSPCA is investigating after a nine-year-old labrador swallowed a dog bait in Caroline Springs last Tuesday. A Caroline Springs resident, who did not want his real name used, said he was taking his dog for a walk along Taylors Road when it swallowed broken glass wrapped in ham. ‘Tony’ said he noticed glass shards protruding from the ham after his labrador picked it up from the footpath. “I rushed her to the vet,” Tony said. “If I had not seen that glass, I would have a very, very
sick dog. In fact, I would’ve probably lost her to internal bleeding.” Tony said while the incident had shaken him up, he felt lucky his dog suffered no serious injuries and was able to go home after several hours observation. He has ordered a muzzle for his dog and is encouraging other pet owners to be vigilant. “For somebody to do something like that [prepare a dog bait], they’ve got some terrible grudge against something,” he said. “It’s such a horrible thing. “It could’ve been anyone’s dog – it just happened to be mine.
“Be wary when you’re walking your dog and don’t allow them to pick up anything … but don’t be scared of taking your dogs out for a walk. We expect to live in a community that doesn’t take such offence to people with dogs.” Melton council compliance manager Ian Stewart said the council received a complaint about dog-baiting last Tuesday and forwarded it to the RSPCA and police. “After preliminary investigation, [council] determined that this was most likely a one-off incident,” he said. RSPCA Victoria chief executive Liz Walker said the organisation had received 54 reports
about dog-baiting statewide in the two years to April. She would not be drawn on how many of those reports were from Melton or the western suburbs. “RSPCA Victoria is sickened by any acts of deliberate cruelty against animals,” Dr Walker said. “There is a known link between violence against animals and violence against people. We take deliberate acts of violence against animals very, very seriously.” People found guilty of animal cruelty offences can face fines of more than $74,000 or up to two years in prison.
Cool move for police station Faulty heating and cooling systems at Bacchus Marsh police station will be replaced as part of the state government’s $3 million package to upgrade 15 regional stations. Inspector Brendon McCrory welcomed the announcement for his members, who, he said, “suffer” through the hottest and coolest weather. “It’s good to see at last that some money has been put aside,” he said. “Not having any heating or cooling makes it uncomfortable for the members in the office.” The state government did not reveal how much money would be put aside to replace the air-conditioning systems at Bacchus Marsh. In addition to the 15 stations to be upgraded and refurbished, seven new police stations will be built in regional Victoria, 10 police residences across the state will be replaced, and more than 400 police officers will be recruited. Of the 400 officers, 300 will work in frontline and 106 in specialised areas, such as with anti-gang and illicit trafficking teams. Acting Police Minister Robin Scott said: “This significant investment will mean more police and new and upgraded police stations right across regional Victoria.” Police Association of Victoria secretary Ron Iddles welcomed the commitment to refurbish Bacchus Marsh police station. But while the announcement of 400 extra officers was a “step in the right direction”, it was not enough, Mr Iddles said.

Costas Bobolas’s tomatoes are the pride of his garden. The long-time Melton resident harvested a beauty weighing 760 grams in the past week. “I look after the plants every day,” Mr Bobolas says. “I picked one earlier in the week and got half a kilogram out of it. But the others on the vine are even bigger than that one.” He says the secret is in the soil, into which he mixes manure and nutrients. “I give them lots of water and make sure they have sun. When I went out to pick a tomato last week they were very big.” Sauces and salads are on the menu in the Bobolas household this winter. The widower says he tirelessly tends to the garden at his Tern Court property to keep himself busy. “I work a lot in the garden. My wife passed away 30 years ago and so I try to look after myself properly. I have a very good garden and have two sons, both family men, who help me.”

Mayor’s Message Cr Kathy Majdlik At Council, we take the health and wellbeing of our community very seriously. Whether it’s developing programs that help us get out and get active, improving access to support services, or building infrastructure that encourages physical activity, we want our residents to be the healthiest and happiest they can be. That’s why I’m so pleased that at the 4 April Ordinary Council Meeting, Council committed to the delivery of the Caroline Springs Stadium extension and Regional Tennis Centre by moving to award the contract for its design. This much anticipated project will see the development of stage two of the Town Centre Recreation Reserve Master Plan which will include two indoor highball courts, 12 outdoor tennis courts; meeting spaces, car parking and landscaping. We anticipate that this exciting project will be completed by the ¦ ¨ ³ ´µ¶·¸´µ¶¹ ¢ £ º ¦ ¡¢££ ¤ ©© ¨ our growing community. Council is also about to table its 2016/2017 draft budget, which will be considered at the 2 May Ordinary Council Meeting. This budget shows our continued commitment to open, transparent and responsive governance, as we aim to continue to deliver high quality services and infrastructure to our community into the future. The draft budget has been framed in the face of increasing external ¢ £ ¥ ©©§ © ¢ £§¦¢ ¥¥¢ ´ª½¾¿ £¨¡ ©© sales, higher employee costs, utilities and operating expenditure. Watts Ward with Cr Renata Cugliari Great news for one of our local sporting clubs: Council recently completed the installation of a turf pitch at the Hillside Recreation Reserve. The turf pitch was handed back to the Sydenham Hillside Cricket Club in early April and is a great asset for one of our grassroots clubs. Previously, the club played home games away from their ground in Royal Crescent, but with the installation of the new pitch, junior and senior teams can play turf matches at home in future. Awesome outcome!

You also may have noticed new shared and footpath works taking place around Watts Ward. It’s great to see new infrastructure being installed and improving accessibility for residents. More footpaths are scheduled to be installed on Diggers RestCoimadai Road by the end of May; and works on the new pedestrian lights on Calder Park Drive (Taylors Hill Youth and Community Centre) are due to start in three weeks. Residents should watch out for the start of the Calder Park Drive works, as ¡¢££ ¤ ¢ ¥£ ¦§ ¢ ¨ © § ¢¨ ª There’s quite a bit happening at our local community facilities over the next few weeks, too. Neighbourhood House Week is running from 5 May and Council has a great program lined up again this year, including a Positive Mental Health for Parents and Carers workshop at Hillside Community Centre, and a Decluttering Your House workshop at Taylors Hill Neighbourhood House, both on 9 May. Melton Specialist School is to get a long-awaited facelift, with the state government announcing $5.4 million in funding for the school in this week’s budget. Multiple portable classrooms have been set up across the school site to cater for its growth, encroaching on students’ outdoor play areas. While details of the works have not been finalised, school principal Evan Savage said he expected permanent classrooms would be built and outdoor space better utilised. “I’m a bit sketchy on the details, but certainly there will be significant improvements to classrooms,” Mr Savage said. “We’re a school that caters for some of the most complex and vulnerable students in Melton and Victoria, but we lack any purpose-built facilities … which will make a tremendous difference to opportunities we can provide for students.” Mr Savage said this money was the largest funding boost the school had received. “We currently have 280 students,” he said. “They’re not crammed into classrooms, but I don’t think the school was designed to cater for that many children. “With the rapid increase we’ve just been trying to meet the demand so it’s taken away from other areas.”

Almost half the brass plaques commemorating “significant people” in Melton’s history have been stolen. When Melton Valley Rotary Club member Graham Dempsey visited the Federation Drive Avenue of Honour earlier this month to install a plaque for Anzac Day commemorations, he noticed 22 of 50 others had been stolen. “Bloody hell. I’ve spent years putting those in,” he told Star Weekly. “I can’t believe people would be so low. “These plaques commemorate significant people of the area. I hope [police] get the mongrels who did it.” While there was no damage done to any of the trees, Mr Dempsey said the plaques had been “badly” prised from their concrete bases. Sergeant Steve Cook, of Melton police, said the plaques were stolen some time between late March and early April. He pleaded with anyone with information to come forward. “These people are ne’er-do-wells who need to have a low character to do something like this,” Sergeant Cook said. “These memorials are to remember and commemorate people who have a significant connection to Melton.” The plaques are 20 centimetres by 10 centimetres and have the logo and name of Melton Valley Rotary Club. Sergeant Cook urged people working at metal scrap yards to keep an eye out for them. “The only thing that can be done with the plaques is to melt them down to sell as scrap… they’d be lucky if they get $5,” he said. Man on drugs charges

Two questioned over teen’s body
Police have questioned two men over the death of Chelsea Heights teenager Cayleb Hough, whose body was found in a mine shaft in the Lerderderg State Park in Bacchus Marsh on March 10. A 36-year-old man arrested in Collingwood was released without charge, while a 28-year-old arrested in Gellibrand was questioned and released. A vehicle was also seized at Gellibrand.

A Melton mother who suspects her son’s birth in 2009 was mismanaged at the Bacchus Marsh Hospital wants the government to expand an investigation into the hospital’s maternity unit. Rebecca Soutter’s seven-year-old son William has a severe language disorder, a learning disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and oppositional defiance disorder. Last year, a review of deaths at the hospital in 2013 and 2014 by leading obstetrician Professor Euan Wallace found its maternity unit was plagued by dangerous problems. After the review, the Victorian government asked Professor Wallace to do a second review of stillbirths at the hospital dating back to 2001, but it has not asked him to review injuries to mothers and babies. This month, Victoria’s Health Services Commissioner, Dr Grant Davies, said his office had received 43 complaints about the hospital, 38 of which were being investigated. Ms Soutter wants the investigation to look at cases like hers because she suspects other mothers will have had similarly traumatic births with untold consequences. Ms Soutter said she was two weeks overdue with William when a doctor at Bacchus Marsh Hospital induced her labour. After almost 20 hours, a doctor used a vacuum to try to pull William down, but it didn’t work so the doctor started talking about forceps. “It didn’t feel right so I requested a caesarean. My mother was there. She’s a nurse and she agreed I should have a caesarean and so did

the midwife. But the doctor persisted,” she said. “When he came out … he was blue, he wasn’t breathing … It was extremely scary.” Seven years on, William has a scar next to his eye from the forceps that delivered him, but his mother is more worried about what the birth may have done to his brain. “I’ve always been concerned about it,” she said. Medical negligence law firms say the number of concerned patients coming forward should prompt an expanded government review. They say many people are concerned about injuries and stillbirths dating back to the 1990s. Anne Shortall, of Slater and Gordon, said it should not be up to mothers and fathers to ask for help to investigate their cases. She said Slater and Gordon believed the investigation should be widened to include stillbirths from 1990 onwards. Dimitra Dubrow, a principal at Maurice Blackburn, which is handling dozens of cases, said she wanted the government to expand its investigation, too.
Teen is quite a hot shot A Plumpton teenager’s decision to take up a new sport 16 months ago has paid big dividends – he’ll be shooting for his country in Ireland in July. Thomas Armstrong, 15, will represent Australia at the world championship of the down-the-line form of clay target shooting in County Galway, Ireland. It is an incredible feat considering Thomas only took up the sport on New Year’s Day, 2015. “Our close family friend, Tony Psaila, invited me along to Walmer Gun Club, where I fired my first shots at a clay target,” Thomas said. “From that day on it’s all I wanted to do every weekend. I was hooked.” The Staughton College student won selection through some impressive performances at the Australian National Trap Championship
in Wagga Wagga two weeks ago. Teams were picked based on results of three of the six events – single barrel, double barrel and the point score event. His “very proud” father John said Thomas went through a gruelling selection process with aplomb. “After shooting every day for seven days … [he] made the top three in juniors to represent Australia,” Mr Armstrong said. Thomas, a member at Werribee Clay Target Club, where he trains once a week, said he was blown away with the news of his selection. “I was amazed and shocked at the same time,” he said. Turbines to ‘blow tourists away’ By Sumeyya Ilanbey James Handley hopes to transform his Bungal property into a holiday destination but fears the planned Moorabool wind farm will have adverse affects on tourism in his town. He says his eight-hectare property on Egerton-Ballark Road is in an “ideal location” – fairly close to Ballarat, Geelong and Melbourne – but worries the wind farms will be an eyesore and drive away tourists. The proposed wind farm would adjoin his property.
“I believe if you put these things in a location close to homes . . . we will lose the utility of the property because nobody will want to come and stay at this retreat,” Mr Handley said. “These wind farms will only create a wasteland. Beautiful locations that could create future employment in tourism and business would just have sheep roaming in them.” Mr Handley said he did not know of any towns where tourism had been affected by wind farms but said people visited rural and regional towns to escape the noise and high rises and “they don’t want wind turbines”.
“There’s a worldwide movement against wind farms because of the health effects, the infrasound, the flicker and the shading,” he said. “Then there’s the annoyance effect . . . people get angry because they’re big, they’re there and they take up all of [the person’s] thought space.” Moorabool mayor Allan Comrie conceded wind farms had adverse effects on tourism. “There’s no doubt about it,” he said. “It will have an adverse effect on a lot of things, lifestyle, health and tourism. They’re an eyesore, but that’s in the eye of the beholder.”
Cr Comrie said he was worried trucks bringing in equipment to build the wind turbines would ruin Moorabool’s roads, and underground water supplies could be damaged when holes were dug for the turbines’ foundation. Moorabool Environment Group president Ben Courtice said wind farms did not adversely affect tourism. “They’re worrying about nothing,” he said. “And the comments about eyesore, there’s a lot of hypocrisy about that. Eyesore from a digging a coal mine isn’t a problem but wind turbines are?”
A “pay-it-forward” initiative in Bacchus Marsh means struggling residents need not go hungry. Ten businesses are now taking part in the Bacchus Up: Pay It Forward scheme, which enables customers to donate money to help pay for meals for people in need. Residents can collect vouchers from community organisations entitling the presenter to a free meal valued up to $10 at participating businesses. FounderJudyD’Attomasaysthescheme,which is popular at cafes in parts of the United States, has helped unite the community for a good cause. “I saw stories on the internet of cafes allowing people to pay it forward for coffee or soup for homeless people, and I thought, why can’t I do that with food?” Ms D’Attoma said. “I got in touch with a few local businesses at first and now there are 10 taking part in the scheme.”
She says the initiative’s benefits are available to anyone in Bacchus Marsh doing it tough. “The pay-it-forward scheme isn’t just for homeless people,” she said. “It’s for the lady down the road who’s struggling and just needs a treat. “It’s for the single mums and the single dads to go out and have a nice meal instead of staying home and eating baked beans on toast. “We have a pet groomer on board, as well. That service is particularly helpful to elderly resident who might have an unruly looking pet, which is often their companion, so they can have it groomed for free sometimes.” Ms D’Attoma says she hopes to inspire more businesses to “pay it forward”. Mowbray on the market By Charlene Macaulay Wyndham councillor and businessman Intaj Khan has put the Mowbray College site in Caroline Springs on the market – with a hefty price tag. Cr Khan, who bought the Caroline Springs campus in 2012 for $6.7 million, has hired commercial real estate agent Savills to run an expressions of interest period for the site, with an asking price of between $10 million and $14 million. Mowbray’s three campuses closed in June,
2012, after the college amassed debts of more than $18 million. In 2014, Cr Khan was offered $10.5 million from developers keen to turn the site into a shopping centre and carpark. Cr Khan, who is founder and chief executive of the Western Institute of Technology, knocked the offer back because he wanted to re-open the site as a non-denominational private secondary college. But after struggling to get enough enrolments to make opening a new school viable, Cr Khan said his interest in the site had waned.
He said he was now keen to sell the site to an education provider, preferably an existing one that was looking to expand. He said the ready-made senior campus and its location in the heart of Caroline Springs were bound to attract some high offers. “I’m not going to sell if I’m not happy with what’s being offered,” he said. The move comes only weeks after Cr Khan unveiled plans for a $9.5 million mansion in Tarneit, complete with helipad and tennis court. But Cr Khan insisted he was not selling the college site to fund his mansion.
The Ballan Mechanics Institute Hall is under new management, but ousted committee members are fuming over the decision. The state-owned heritage hall has been managed by two groups but, in a recent move by the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning to simplify management, the Mechanics Institute committee was dissolved. Ballan and District Community House and Adult Education Centre, which is based at the hall, will now manage it. Institute president David Hookey said he believed the decision was made “underhandedly”. “We feel like the committee has been dissolved without so much as a thanks for all your good work,” he said. The new managers will oversee the hall’s two full-time employees as well as the free library and Centrelink. An Environment, Land, Water and Planning spokesman said the department had been discussing options for the hall with all parties and Moorabool council. “The department believes it is in the best long-term interests of the community for the Ballan and District Community House and Adult Education Centre committee to be appointed as the committee of management.” Esther Lauaki

Dementia figures set to soar By Sumeyya Ilanbey The number of Melton residents living with dementia is expected to increase by a whopping 1440 per cent in the next three decades, according to Alzheimer’s Australia. While the figures reveal a sharp rise in dementia cases across Victoria, a growing and ageing population is likely to contribute to a significant jump in Melton. Almost 15,000 Melton residents will have dementia by 2050, compared with the 1000 in 2015, according to the agency.
Alzheimer’s Australia Victoria chief executive Maree McCabe said dementia wasn’t about age – with people as young as 30 being diagnosed – or socio-economic status. And while dementia was not a normal process of ageing, it was becoming more and more common, Ms McCabe said. “One in 13 people who live with dementia are actually under the age of 65,” she said. “But there are also people in their 30s, 40s and 50s diagnosed. What people might not know is that dementia is the second leading cause of death after heart disease.”
Ms McCabe said her team was focused on reducing the risk factors and rates of progression. And while there’s no guarantee any of it will work, there’s “increasing evidence” that an improved lifestyle may reduce a person’s chances of getting dementia. “Some of those risk reductions are looking after our heart … making sure our blood pressure and cholesterol are at healthy levels, having a good diet, avoiding habits like smoking, and ensuring we exercise our body and brain,” she said. People with dementia report stigmatisation
and social isolation, which can “exacerbate the challenges”. Ms McCabe said Alzheimer’s Australia clients reported dementia was “the most isolating condition”. Dementia-friendly spaces and communities are essential for the wellbeing of patients, Ms McCabe said. “We use things like colour, lighting and texture … a space that’s dementia-friendly is friendly for almost everyone.” Call the National Dementia Helpline 1800 100 500.

When Catherine Baud lives on under $2 a day next week, her thoughts will be with the millions of people around the globe living in poverty. The rumbling stomach, cravings and hunger will all be bearable compared with what others go through every day of their lives, the Darley 19-year-old says. Just as in the past two years, Ms Baud will take part in the Live Below the Line campaign to raise money for schools in Cambodia, Timor-Leste and Papua New Guinea, and to help raise awareness about extreme poverty. Ms Baud studies international development at the Australian Catholic University and one day hopes to work for a non-government organisation tackling global poverty. “Poverty is unjust,” Ms Baud said. “It’s a terrible thing and it shouldn’t be happening – people shouldn’t be living like that in the 21st century.”

What community groups are you part of?
What makes you want to be involved in the Moorabool community?
I belong to the Bacchus Marsh branch of the Country Womens’ Association, which is part of the Ballarat District Group, and served on committees. I’ve also helped in the RSL Womens Auxiliary, Bacchus Marsh and I help where I can at the grandchildren’s school.
I like to help people who are less fortunate than myself, and there is a lot of need out there. I can sew, that helps with making trauma dolls that get made for Bacchus Marsh Hospital and the breast cancer care packs that the branch put together for the breast cancer patients in the Ballarat area.
How long have you been involved with the CWA?
Why do you feel it’s important for people to get involved in the community, particularly young people?
I have been in CWA for approximately 38 years. Starting at Sutton Grange and transferring to Bacchus Marsh when we shifted to this area. What are the most memorable community projects that you have been involved in? Several things come to mind but the Pioneer Womens’ Avenue revamp was one of the important ones. It was an eight-year project that ended with the launch of the book about the avenue and the women honoured in it. More recently I’ve been working with the group art and craft exhibition that will be held in Ballan on May 13 and 14. It’s the first time the exhibition has come to Ballan. An ongoing project at the moment I’m involved with is finding a home for the

A community is made up of you and I and helping gives us a sense of self worth because you’re helping a fellow neighbour. What are your favourite places to visit in Moorabool? I am one of those people who like to explore a place that I have shifted into. I am still exploring and have no favourite place as yet but the whole area is unique. What do you love about Coimadai? Coimadai provided a place away from busy towns as that is why we left to come to this area.

On Challis Street, there never had been … and now there is. Searz is a very fine local cafe. It serves standard-range cafe breakfasts and mains, such as a caesar salad, a burrito bowl and fish ’n’ chips. But running through the mains and the smaller (tapas) dishes are Japanese/Korean influences. We find our meals over two visits, and the service and timing, the whole experience, is top-notch. The bento special no doubt changes periodically. This version has fish three different ways: teriyaki salmon, battered cod with wasabi mayo, and grilled gemfish with Korean chilli sauce. They are all delicious and beautifully cooked. There’s about half a dozen different kinds of pickle, some of which I love, some of which I could do without. The house-made zucchini pickles are very fine. The bento line-up is completed by good salad and rice. And given the quality of the seafood involved, the bento would be right at home in a bona fide Japanese restaurant. Bennie’s bibimbap, a Korean rice dish ($16), is a doozy, too. He loves the finely cooked beef and mushrooms, the salady bits, egg, enokis

Unlike so many versions of this dish, this one has enough fluid action going on that it’s a well-lubricated, “sweet and spicy” treat, right to the bottom of the bowl. But however fine his bibimbap, Bennie is openly envious of my ‘1010 burger’ ($15) – and so he should be. Despite the burger burn-out factor of the past year or so, this strikes us as being superb. It’s a 9/10 burger and chips combo that scrubs up much better than many of those to be had at more storied burger joints around Melbourne. There’s more of those zucchini pickles in there. And there’s ‘Searz aioli’, tomato relish and the usual, standard salad accessories. The meat patty is thick, juicy and screaming with beefy flavour. Gosh, it’s fantastic. The chips are hot, fresh and very plentiful. Searz is a prime example of everything a neighbourhood cafe should be. And the food, what we have enjoyed of it, rocks.

SPORT Burras win again as AFL recruit shines A best-on-ground performance from off season recruit Taylor Hine helped Diggers Rest maintain its unbeaten start to the Riddell District Football League season. The Burras easily accounted for Lancefield on Saturday, running out 49-point winners. Hine, who came to the club after playing in the AFL with Gold Coast and North Melbourne, kicked a goal and won a lot of important ball around the ground. His efforts helped Diggers Rest get off to a flying start with the Burras kicking eight goals in the first half. It wasn’t just at the attacking end that the Burras were clicking – defensively, they conceded only two goals to half-time.
With the groundwork laid, there was no cause for concern in the second half with the Burras adding another six goals in the 14.14 (98) - 7.7 (49) win. Brandon Kilty was also impressive for Diggers Rest, kicking two goals, with Cole Laurie and Sean Egan also working hard. The Burras will take on Romsey this week. In other RDFL results, Melton Centrals continue to show signs of improvement in the early stages of the season. After smashing Rockbank in round one, the Centrals pushed Wallan in a hard-fought clash before going down by 15 points. Melton was left to rue a horror first quarter in which it slipped 30 points behind.
Despite being on the back foot, the Centrals continued to work hard and began to slowly peg back the margin. Six goals of their own and a much stronger defensive effort allowed the deficit to be cut to 11 points at the final change. But Wallan was able to regroup, kicking six final quarter goals to seal the 16.8 (104) - 13.11 (89) win. Woodend-Hesket smashed Rockbank, Sunbury Kangaroos defeated Broadford and Riddell easily accounted for Romsey. Liam Twomey John Ryan was among the best for Diggers Rest at the weekend. (Shawn Smits)
Dougie fires up for Cobras again He is an AFL legend with 350 games to his name and is a member of the Western Bulldogs team of the century. In every sense, Doug Hawkins is a football legend. But it is returning to Bacchus Marsh that has Hawkins feeling like he is back home. Bacchus Marsh was the setting for the toughest moment in his football life and also the most inspiring. He spoke to Liam Twomey. It wasn’t long ago that Doug Hawkins had no interest in coaching football again. He had been a senior and junior coach at Ballarat Football League club Bacchus Marsh but stepped down from the role in 2013. But catching up with a former player changed his perspective. Having been coached by Hawkins in the under-16s, Ricky Shortis showed his former mentor a photo of them celebrating their 2011 premiership. “Ricky said to me, ‘This is what you should be doing – coaching young blokes, you’re good at it,” Hawkins said. “I told him I was too busy and he said, ‘It isn’t about you – it’s about the kids, it’s about the young blokes’. “I’d never heard that before. It was really interesting, the way he spun it to me.” He phoned his wife and told her of his desire to coach again. Hawkins was welcomed back into the Bacchus Marsh coaching fold with open arms and was given the nod to lead the Cobras’ under-18 side this season. While every coach is judged on wins and losses, Hawkins’ evaluation of himself comes down to more than that. Helping his players transition from boys playing in the juniors to men playing in the seniors has a more fundamental basis, one far from any football field. “I’ve told the boys how it is with me,” Hawkins said. “Your family and your work are No.1. Your footy will always come after that. “At that age now there are so many different things going on in their lives. In my day, all I had was footy and cricket. Now they have so many other things that they can do. Because of that, it is very critical and important that you keep it fun.” There is nothing quite as much fun as winning and with Hawkins at the helm, winning has been a theme for the Cobras’ under-18s. They are 2-0 after two rounds and are looming as serious contenders for finals football. Returning to the coaching fold at Bacchus Marsh has some strong personal memories for Hawkins. His 2011 under-16s premiership victory was full of emotion after rising star Nathan Prince died during the club’s finals campaign. Prince suffered cardiac arrest on the field. “Nathan, he had all the boxes ticked to play AFL football,” Hawkins said. “He was down at the Western Jets. In what he describes as the highlight of his football life, Hawkins and his team of heartbroken boys went on to win the premiership for Prince.
Bacchus Marsh beat North Ballarat City in the grand final and Hawkins became a Cobra for life. “I said to myself, that is the ultimate,” Hawkins said. “What those boys did was the greatest thing that I have ever been a part of in football. You can’t beat it, you can’t match it. “After what happened to Nathan, for those boys to go on and win the grand final … that was the greatest sporting achievement of my entire career, including playing in the AFL and breaking Ted Whitten’s games record.” Of that premiership side, the success stories from an individual point of view came thick and fast. Three members of that side were selected in the national draft, with Liam Duggan going to West Coast, Dillon Viojo-Rainbow finding his way to Carlton and Brenton Payne being picked up by St Kilda. After experiencing such incredible highs and lows in their junior careers, Hawkins said it was
a great thrill to keep an eye on how his former players were tracking. “I like to give them a call or a ring out of the blue to see how they are going,” he said. “I gave Liam a text last week and he replied straight away which is fantastic. The fact that I had a little bit to do with their success, that is a great thrill.” There have also been a number of players from that side who have gone on to play senior football for Bacchus Marsh. Among them is Hawkins’ son, Ricky. With this season marking the five-year anniversary of the famous premiership win, Hawkins is already planning a reunion. “This year we are going to have our five-year premiership reunion,” he said. “It’s going to be called, In the Backyard at Dougie’s. “We will have a few beers, I’ll put the replay of that game on. “We will reminisce how good they were and how great they were.”

Bloods pay the price for being slow off the mark A goalless first half came back to haunt Melton in the Ballarat Football League on Saturday night. The Bloods went down to Sunbury by 14 points in a loss that coach Brad Murphy described as extremely frustrating. Melton had plenty of opportunities to hit the scoreboard early, but undisciplined acts cost it dearly. But Sunbury was unable to take full advantage, kicking 4.10 to leave the comeback door ajar for Melton. The Bloods found their feet in the second term to grab the momentum and when they kicked four goals to one in the third term and made a hot start to the final quarter, their fourpoint lead looked likely to extend. But Sunbury hit back with four late goals to wrestle back control and secure the 9.16 (70) - 8.8 (56) win.
Murphy said his side had to be able to play at the same level for four quarters. “We gave the boys a bit of a rev-up and an old-fashioned spray at half-time,” he said. “I also mentioned that Sunbury was down to one rotation. They lost some guys who weren’t going to be able to come back on. “I thought that would be a factor on the biggest ground in the competition, so we made mention of that. “We piled it on in the third quarter, kicking four goals, and in the wet that’s a pretty good effort. “We had a good last quarter but just couldn’t hang on.” Jake Gleeson was impressive for Melton, kicking one goal and winning numerous key contests around the ground. Along with Jack Walker and Dillon Sharp, Gleeson was named among the best players.
Melton will have a strong chance to get back on the winners’ list against Sebastopol this week, although Sebastopol will go into the game with some confidence after a solid win against Melton South at the weekend. Murphy says his side will have to be on its game from the first bounce. “They had that first win of the year so they will obviously be pretty excited with that. They have Brett Goodes playing for them this season. A year ago he was playing AFL with the Bulldogs, so we’re going to have our work cut out. We know it will be a tough game and we’ll need effort and intensity from the start.” In other BFL round two results, North Ballarat defeated Redan in a two-point thriller, while Ballarat got the better of East Point by nine.
Heat beats gutsy Jets By Lance Jenkinson The Western Jets wilted in the stifling Brisbane heat in Saturday’s 28-point loss to Queensland in the TAC Cup. For most of the Jets, the flight north was the first time they had travelled interstate for a game. They were met by a supremely talented Queensland side and a hot and humid 29°C day. Jets coach Torin Baker admitted his players struggled with the conditions. “I think Queensland’s running ability in those conditions was excellent,” he said. “Our boys were a bit cooked at certain stages.” The Jets trailed by just a point at quarter-time. Ten goals were evenly split between the two sides in a frenetic opening 30 minutes. In the middle quarters, Queensland started to take control. “Our midfield got beaten fairly comprehensively in the second quarter,” Baker said. “We just found we were defending a lot and didn’t have the energy to counteract the running we were having to do defensively.” The Jets never gave up, with their fighting qualities coming to the fore late in the third quarter. What could have been a blow-out ended in a respectable 17.14 (116) - 14.4 (88) loss. “Halfway through the third quarter, we started to arrest the momentum and were able to get a lot of forward entries,” Baker said. “It was pleasing to see we ran the game out well.” When the Jets had their backs up against the wall, Cameron Rayner was one of the few midfielders to offer some resistance. Brodie Romensky’s versatility was on show again as he played at a high standard in defence and through the midfield. Harry Bult continues to build on his impressive resume and showed a lot of grit in locking down Queensland’s key forwards. Daniel Venables and Nick Giarrizzo were dangerous in attack with three goals apiece, while Frank Campisi and Mickey Nicholls slotted two each. Queensland showed it is getting stronger and poses a growing threat to visiting TAC Cup sides. “I think it’s well known in footy circles that both the NSW and Queensland academies and the work done with their players from a young age is really starting to pay off,” Baker said. “You can see that with some of the players they’ve produced at AFL level. “They’ve got some excellent top-end talent and overall some real good depth in their state team. We were playing a really talented team … a lot of our players were saying they have a respect for the level of talent they were playing against. “At times we showed we were able to compete really well.” The Jets will take on Dandenong Stingrays at Burbank Oval on Sunday.

Melton Phoenix and Bell Park played a high-scoring draw in state league 4 soccer at the weekend. All tied up at 1-1 at half-time, both sides peppered the goals in the second half. But neither was able to break free and the match ended in a 3-3 draw. Jordan Borg continued his brilliant start to the season, scoring a vital goal for Melton, and now has five for the year after netting in every match. Also on target for Melton were Chris Briggs and Neil Keltie. After four rounds, Melton is fifth on the ladder. Phoenix will test itself against the league’s best this week when it lines up against top-of-the-table Brimbank Stallions.

Caroline Springs recovered from a slow start to smash Glen Orden in the Western Region Football League at the weekend. After trailing by seven points at quarter-time, the Lakers refocused defensively, conceding just one goal across the next two quarters. But there were no issues scoring at the other end, with key forward Mathew Sutton again doing the damage. He booted 10 goals as his side won by 88 points, 24.18 (162) - 11.8 (74). After three games, Sutton has kicked 24 and is a key reason why the Lakers are unbeaten. In what will be a huge match this week, Caroline Springs will take on top-of-the-table Yarraville-Seddon.

Burnside Heights showed signs of improvement in its Essendon District Football League division 2 clash against Coburg Districts at the weekend, despite another heavy defeat. After being on the wrong end of two hammerings to start the season, Burnside was much more competitive at the weekend even though it went down by 73 points. Trailing by 78 at three-quarter time, the Bears kicked five goals in the last term to succumb 17.19 (121) - 7.6 (48). In other results, East Keilor defeated East Sunbury 18.16 (124) - 9.11 (65) and Moonee Valley edged Jacana in a thriller, 12.9 (81) - 11.8 (74). Moonee Valley and East Keilor are making the early running on the ladder with both undefeated through three rounds. They will meet in round five.

Rivals unite for title By Liam Twomey What happens when two stars of the Central Highlands Bowls competition join forces? They win a state title. Kyneton’s Desma Budd and Bacchus Marsh’s Amy Gloury were rivals on the greens, but a decision to team up for the Victorian Bowls Championships proved a stroke of genius. Just a few months later they are state champions after claiming gold in the pairs event in Bendigo last week. “We played against each other in pennant and we were talking one day and decided to pair up and see how we went,” Budd said. “We thought, why not give it a go and see what happens?” There was nothing easy about Budd and Gloury’s quest for state championship gold. They were forced to fight through an association tournament and a regional event just to qualify. And after seeing off a number of talented teams, Budd and Gloury saved their best for the biggest stage, winning their semi-final and final by a combined 24 shots. Budd said the fact both had skipped for their respective clubs played a large part in their success. “That really helped us. We could both play the shots we needed to play,” she says. “I led and I had to do a lot of drawing and Amy was the skip. “Some of the heads I actually had to have a go at and mess it up … “Because I play skip in our pennant team that worked well for me because I could play those spots and Amy knew that.” While it was a big win for Budd and Gloury, it was also a great result for the Central Highlands Bowls competition.

Sydenham Park continued its strong start to the state league 1 soccer season, edging Cairnlea 1-0 on Saturday. Sydenham now sits in second spot on the table after four rounds. The club has proved to be an attacking handful for opposition sides and has scored the most goals in the league (10) in the first month of the season. Sydenham Park trails competition frontrunner Altona Magic by three points. Magic is yet to lose a match and will be one of the sides to beat come the business end of the season. In other results from the weekend, Altona East Phoenix knocked off Keilor Park 2-1, North Sunshine Eagles defeated Westgate 3-2 and Preston Lions were too good for Diamond Valley, winning 3-0. Footscray Edgewater was well represented in the latest round of Victorian Bushranger contracts announced last week. Star batsman Travis Dean and talented all-rounder Guy Walker were both given full contracts for next season. Dean was a star for the Bushrangers throughout 2015-16, scoring 807 runs, including a stunning century in the Sheffield Shield final against South Australia. The 24-year old opening batsman is averaging 44 at first-class level. Walker, 20, made his Big Bash League debut for Melbourne Renegades this season. MOTOR Fiat’s X marks a stylish spot
Inside The old-school looks continue inside with a painted metal look finish along the dashboard. Even the 6.5-inch touchscreen manages to look retro – it displays the reverse camera and the entertainment features that come with the very good U-connect system common to Fiat Chrysler Group vehicles. The eight-speaker sound system in the Cross Plus was excellent.
Being a Fiat, the interior was never going to be bland. The 500X Cross Plus I tested had red and black leather trim that was pretty garish but suited the car’s general style. I also liked the look of the fittings, including the door handles and airconditioning dials. Outside, there’s a host of paint and stripe options and further personalisation can be had with different coloured door mirrors and wheels. I quite liked the metallic grey with red side mirrors and red go-fast stripes on our test car.
The front seats were comfortable and back seats provided good legroom – something that certainly couldn’t be said about the smaller 500. The rear easily accommodates two adults or three kids. Boot space is another obvious improvement over the 500, but it’s not that big compared to other small SUVs. This would be a nice car for a driving holiday but you’d want to keep luggage to a minimum. It could also do with more cabin storage other than the cup holders and locker in the centre console.
Performance The 500X also differs from its little brother in performance. The 1.4-litre petrol turbo engine propels it well and the automatic transmission works with it nicely. There are paddle shifts should you feel like a little more hands-on driving. It has different driving modes – normal, sport and wet/snow. It feels nice and solid on the road but handles nicely and has a comfortable ride. Road noise is quite low despite the chunky 18-inch wheels. Fuel consumption is excellent. I was averaging about seven litres/100 kilometres, which is just over the combined rate claimed by Fiat. This car isn’t short on safety equipment with heaps of standard features across the range including the reversing camera and rear cross-path detection, blind-spot monitoring in the side mirrors and forward collision warning. Cost Even with all the features, pricing is on the hefty side. Prices start at $29,000 drive away for the base-model, manual Pop. The Fiat 500 has an enduring aesthetic appeal that was always going to prove a hit when Fiat decided to produce a modern version in 2007. Trouble is, while everyone loved the retro looks it was still a very small car without the practicality that many expect these days. In its wisdom, Fiat decided to produce an upscale version, resulting in one of the more unique small SUVs on the market. Unlike the Mini Clubman, whose proportions don’t quite match the beauty of it’s popular little brother, the Fiat 500X has all the curves in the right places and still looks cute. If you were looking at it from afar, the only real difference would be the way the wheel arches sit high above the tyres. Another difference comes with the top-spec all-wheel-drive Cross Plus, which has contrasting bumper bars and mouldings over the wheel arch to give it more rugged look. Despite the resemblance, this is very different car to the little 500 – it has more in common with the Jeep Renegade, including the same chassis.
