Fear forces picnic rethink A community picnic, called to help unite Melton around its Muslim community last Sunday, was called off by police and organisers because anti-Islam groups indicated they would gatecrash the event. The picnic had been organised in the wake of violent clashes in the town last November between anti-racism groups and racial extremist fringe groups Reclaim Australia, True Blue Crew and the United Patriots Front. Melton’s Hannah Watts Park was to be the scene of a ‘United Solidarity community picnic’, whose aim was to encourage friendship

and an attitude of tolerance for all. Melton sisters-in-law Christie and Jess, who asked that only their first names be used, developed the idea as a peaceful way to bring people together. “We are parents of young children and have been Melton community members of six years,” Christie said. “The Islamic community has been a valuable part of the Australian community for decades. “There is no need for the extreme reactions we have been seeing. “Despite being a peaceful, communityfocused faith, many people who follow the Muslim faith have been the subject of disgraceful bigotry and hatred in recent times

due to the rise of terrorist attacks throughout the world.” Jess said she thinks Australians need to recognise that the vast majority of Muslims are not terrorists. “They are hard-working Aussies, mums and dads, school children, employees – no different to the rest of us, apart from their choice of religion.” The pair has now postponed the picnic until later this year, saying they want it to promote more tolerant attitudes. “This event is most definitely not a protest. It is a peaceful, family event and will have children in attendance, so we respectfully request that

anyone with a desire to cause trouble please stay away,” Christie said. “By bringing together people who may not ordinarily socialise with one another, we hope to break down barriers and encourage friendships. “We encourage everyone to come down and participate, even if they believe that they are against Islam. “Asking questions with an open mind is the best way to dispel fear.” Melton police’s Senior Sergeant Simon Payne said his team would carry out a risk assessment and meet with the organisers to discuss security options for the event.

No room for school in Ballan plan Ballan mother Gabrielle Fidler has vowed to keep fighting for a secondary school in town after Moorabool councillors backed what she called an “outdated” structure plan. The Ballan Structure Plan, which was put out for community consultation almost three years ago, was only adopted by councillors at a special meeting last month. But the plan did not even consider a potential site for a secondary school in Ballan, she said, while students travel up to 100 kilometres a day for their education. Ms Fidler said she hoped Moorabool council and the state government would soon recognise the need for a school. “If the school was built in time for my kids, it would be a bonus,” the mother-of-two said. “But I’m being realistic … this is something for the future and something for the community.” Ms Fidler said a secondary school would benefit teenagers coming from nearby towns, such as Mt Wallace and Gordon, as well as those from Ballan. “It was disappointing the whole thing was rushed,” Ms Fidler said. “There was a rush to get it through before Christmas, even though it had been waiting for two-and-a-half years. “A lot of people have moved in and out of town; Fiskville has closed down and there’s been a big loss of jobs. A school would have been a great employer; it would create quality, permanent jobs.” Moorabool mayor Allan Comrie said the council could not lobby the state government to put a school in Ballan. “We can’t put into the plan that we are going to build a secondary school at a particular site,” he said. “That’s something the Education Department will need to assess and decide. “We understand where the residents are coming from, but there’s not much that can be done about it at this stage. “The area is not a high-growth area and it will be a while before Ballan gets the kind of growth the department is looking for.” More details: http://bit.ly/1KgCzr2

M o o r a b o o l ’s Australia Day ambassador Vedran Drakulic (right) has committed to an active life in the community and is always willing to help others. Mr Drakulic, the chief executive of Gandel Philanthropy, one of Australia’s largest independent family philanthropic funds, will be special guest at Moorabool council’s Australia Day celebrations at Ballan Mechanics Institute on January 26. Mr Drakulic, an Australia Day ambassador since 2010, says promoting social justice and cohesion is one of his main goals in the role. He arrived in Australia as a refugee of the Bosnian war in the early ’90s and has been involved in many community activities since. He’s also been active in a number of humanitarian organisations, including Australian Red Cross, Oxfam Australia and Scope. Half-price rego for apprentices

By Esther Lauaki A year ago Paige Mozjerin had no experience, no job and no idea about what to do about turning her life around. Now she’s three weeks into her first job – behind the reception desk at Melton CFA fire station. The Melton 18-year-old is one of the latest youth recruits to complete the Matchworks XLR8 youth employment program, which she says has given her confidence. “I hated school. I couldn’t wait to be done with it,” she said. “I finished secondary school halfway through year 11 and started working in retail and fast food places before I went through the Matchworks program.” The four-week XLR8 program, aimed at job seekers aged 15 to 21, helps participants engage with their local communities while addressing barriers to employment. “At first I thought it would be pretty lame, but it turned out to be really good,” Paige said. “I had no idea how to look for a job, go to an interview or write a resume. “We had people come in and talk to us about different things like what services were available in Melton. They taught us how to prepare for a job interview and how to go through interviews. We also did a lot of writing and rewriting our resumes. “I never knew what to do and what to say, but I felt really confident when we had some of the guest speakers come in and explain that attitude is always a good thing and you’re not useless. “Three weeks ago I had nothing.” Miss Mozjerin said young job seekers aiming to take that next step into finding work should consider the XLR8 course.

Trades apprentices now have to pay only half price for vehicle registrations to keep them moving towards successful careers. Eligible apprentices in metropolitan Melbourne will save $385.90 a year on light vehicle registrations, while apprentices in regional Victoria will save $330.20. The first round of registration renewal notices has been issued. Applying from January 1, the notices outline how eligible trade apprentices can take advantage of the state government’s new discount. Melton MP Don Nardella welcomed the decision to put more money back into apprentice tradies’ wallets. “This is great news for low-paid apprentices,” he said. “The money trade apprentices save on registration costs can now be invested in more training and more tools.” Roads Minister Luke Donnellan encouraged applicants to apply for the discount as soon as they received their vehicle renewal notices. “These vehicles are often important tools of the job and we’ve delivered on our commitment to halve regos for eligible young bricklayers, carpenters, joiners, electricians and plumbers, who rely on our roads to get to and from each job,” the minister said. Fiery start for new CFA chief The Country Fire Authority’s north-west region welcomes new assistant chief officer Gavin Thompson this week. Mr Thompson, initially, will be based in Melton. He will be responsible for service delivery and operations across a huge region covering the outer northern and western suburbs of Melbourne, out to Swan Hill and far north-western Victoria. He says he’s looking forward to working with people in the region. “The priority will be taking stock of where things are at and getting familiar with everything around the patch – it’s a big patch and largely new to me,” he said. “Initially, I’ll be at Melton and after that I’ll be working from different locations around the region. “It’s hot and it’s dry. The fire season started early for the north-west region and right now there’s no end in sight. “The region is quite diverse; there are busy metro areas with large urban brigades, right through to smaller communities. “I see it as imperative to support all our people in delivering services to their communities.” Mr Thompson started as a junior in the CFA at Bayswater then volunteered as a senior at Boronia. As a career firefighter and then officer, he has been stationed at Shepparton, Patterson River, Dandenong and Falls Creek. CFA chief officer Joe Buffone said Mr Thompson came to the role with extensive operational, strategy and policy experience.

We need to take the good things and build on them. “At the end of the day, my priority is to see CFA people delivering CFA services. “It doesn’t matter if it’s you or me, it’s about those services being delivered to the community.”

In for their chop More than 1500 people are expected to head to the Greendale Country Pub on Australia Day for its annual woodchop competition. Pub owners Greg and Karen Popple say the woodchop, now in its fourth year, started with about 300 participants and now attracts people from across Victoria. “We started it up because our logo is a wood saw and we had a local woodchopper down here, so we thought this would be a fun way to raise some money,” Mrs Popple said, “It’s really grown in such a short time and it’s a great family day for the community.

“The CFA guys bring their fire truck down and put on a huge barbecue and we have live music, bucking-bull rides, stalls, food and drinks all day. “All the money raised is donated to the Greendale CFA and the rest gets filtered into the community.” The pub’s woodchop championship runs from 11am to 5pm with winners receiving prizes and one taking the coveted woodchop title. Three arrested over attack

Victorians are being invited to “escape to the country and experience the diversity of Moorabool” during the autumn harvest. Stallholders and local producers are getting ready to put their best feet forward on March 20 for the Ballan Autumn Festival, one of Moorabool’s biggest events. Festival committee president Kevin Harper says organisers hope this will be the best year yet. “The theme is Escape to the Country – experience the diversity of Moorabool,” he says. “We wanted to capture and embrace the changing community landscape. “With Moorabool being identified as a growth region, with many people already relocating into the area, we wanted to

showcase the many wonderful aspects of our community.” The festival program features a wood chop competition, art exhibition, rides, vintage cars and machinery, and a petting zoo. New to the line-up is an IGA food and wine tasting trail, offering festival-goers selections of local food, wine, beer and cider. “The highlight will be an appearance by local My Kitchen Rules contestants Josh and Rose, who will be sharing a selection of their winning dishes,” Mr Harper said. Fire investigators are assessing the cause of a grass fire on the median strip of the Western Highway near Bacchus Marsh on January 8. Bacchus Marsh and Myrniong fire brigades responded and were able to confine the fire quickly. Victoria Police redirected traffic. “We are all very thankful that the weather conditions were favourable and allowed us to extinguish the fire quickly,” CFA spokesman Dale Salathiel said. Another small fire about five kilometres down the Western Freeway sparked the following day. Mr Salathiel said it was unknown whether the incidents were related.

Hub pops up for townsfolk

By Esther Lauaki A Melton couple is on a mission to help a woman rebuild her life after she lost all her possessions in a house fire three weeks before Christmas. John Southall and his wife, Lynda, are calling on local businesses and residents to donate unwanted furniture and homewares to help Nicole Brown get back on track. “We really wanted to help her because she cares for others, and it’s time someone returned the favour,” Mr Southall said. He said it was former Melton mayor Sophie Ramsey, a close friend of Ms Brown’s, who enlisted their help. “This woman used to look after Sophie’s daughter, and she’s been through a tough time over Christmas. She’s now living with family … and could use all the help she can get.” Mr Southall has gathered a $5000 lounge suite, $200 in cash, mattresses and other household items to donate. “I’ve got all this stuff sitting in the garage to deliver to her,” he said. “I think it’s important that we take care of our people. “We send money overseas to help other people when we should first help the people right here in our own communities. “That’s the way Aussies used to be. You’d roll up your sleeves to help your mate. “It’s important that people know what we are trying to do here. This is what life’s all about. “My wife and I put together about 130 food hampers over Christmas at our house to give to families that were doing it rough over the holiday season. “We enjoy what we do because we get to see the smile on people’s face when we help them, and that’s very special. A new pop-up service hub will open at Melton South on January 22 to give residents easy access to community support and health services. Local service providers have collaborated on the pop-up hub, which will provide information and advice on issues including child and family support, mental health, Aboriginal services, alcohol and drug treatment, family violence, housing, and disability. The hub is an initiative of Brimbank Melton Connect, the Melton South Community Centre and Linking Melton South, and has been facilitated by Djerriwarrh Health Services and Melton council. It will be open every Friday. Brimbank Melton Connect is itself a collaboration of 27 different agencies, with MacKillop Family Services leading the group. Community programs manager Mary D’Elia said the pop-up services hub was driven by feedback from the community to improve access to support services for those living in Melton South. “We have listened to the community and created a model which will streamline access to vital support services,” she said. The hub will operate every Friday between 9.30am and noon at Melton South Community Centre, 41 Exford Road, Melton South. Kids just wanna have play space By Esther Lauaki An online petition calling for a children’s playground in Bacchus Marsh drew 52 signatures of support in its first week. The petition, created by mother-of-two Jasmine John and calling on the community to support the push for a new playground in the town’s Essence estate, went live on Change.org last week. “As far as we know, there is no playground scheduled to be built in the estate within the next three years,” Mrs John said. “This installation of a children’s playground at the allocated reserve on Parkside Avenue will give many of the families in the estate a place to play, relax, entertain and meet other local families … to help build a friendly and welcoming local community here in the Essence estate and the surrounding Stonehill estate. “It will be a great addition to our estate and make the reserve a much more usable space for all members of our local community.” Mrs John with her husband and their two daughters, aged four and five, moved in 18 months ago. “We’ve lived here long enough to know that we really could use a playground in the area,” she said. “With it being quite a new estate, many of us built our homes and have not yet had time to landscape the backyard, so we actually don’t have backyards. “It would be wonderful if we could have a playground at the reserve down the road so that

we don’t have to walk all the way to Stonehill to use the one there.” Many local residents also expressed their support in signing the petition on Facebook. “We live in Essence estate with two young children,” one poster wrote. “They need a communal place to visit and congregate with other local kids safely. “We moved here for the community feel and, as we await other families to move in, there is limited space for them to play.” “I really hope this can happen,” another wrote. “There are currently quite a few kids who play outside in Porter Avenue, mine included. “With Essence only going to get more built-up, with more cars on the road, it would not only be fun for the kids but safer, too.”

A bedside education Clinical educator Sue Chapple says her biggest reward is inspiring young learners. Ms Chapple’s work with year 11 and 12 students has earned her an industry award from the Highland Local Learning Employment Network for outstanding service and commitment to learning. Last September, Ballan District Health and Care hosted four secondary school students interested in nursing careers. Under Ms Chapple’s guidance and supervision, the students observed the duties of hospital staff and interacted with patients, nurses and other healthcare professionals. She organised staff mentors for each student and briefed the students daily. Highlands Local Learning Employment Network youth transitions co-ordinator

Brendan O’Connell commended Ms Chapple for her work. “The students were able to experience all aspects of the health centre,” he said. Ms Chapple chalks it up as a win for the entire community. “It’s not an award just for me, it’s an award for Ballan District Health and Care,” she said. “It was the first time we had taken in vocational education and training students instead of actual nursing students so a lot of co-ordinating was involved. “It’s like nurturing the next generation of nurses. When these kids come in, they’re full of exuberance … like little sponges that soak up knowledge.”

Stroke came out of the blue By Esther Lauaki Western suburbs residents are being urged to be more aware of strokes this year by making time to attend a StrokeSafe education talk. Melton resident Antonio Iannella, 45, became one of the National Stroke Foundation’s StrokeSafe ambassadors after having a stroke seven years ago, aged just 38, while on holiday in Vietnam. “It struck me out of the blue,” he said. “I was in a bad way. “I couldn’t hear, see or speak and I was in hospital for a while before they flew me home to Australia.” It was later discovered that Mr Iannella had suffered a brain hemorrhage caused by a burst vein. “What people don’t know is that there are so many different types of stroke,” he said. “I was born with an arterial vein malformation, which caused my stroke, but there are so many other factors that could cause someone to have a stroke.” He said his experience made “a world of difference” to being a StrokeSafe ambassador. “I was touched by stroke personally, so volunteering in this role is something that’s extremely important to me,” he said. “Sadly, too many people don’t understand what a stroke is and what they can do to potentially avoid having one. “If we just eat healthy foods and go for a walk once in awhile, it improves our health so much. It’s just the little things that we can change to live a long and healthy life.

“Inviting a StrokeSafe speaker to talk to your community group is a great way to learn lifesaving stroke prevention and awareness messages and, most importantly, how to recognise the signs of stroke.” National Stroke Foundation spokeswoman Mary Orgill said StrokeSafe ambassadors played a key role in educating people about what a stroke is and actions they can take to prevent it. “StrokeSafe education talks aim to ensure people understand that a stroke is a medical emergency, with fast treatment vital to survival and recovery,” Ms Orgill said. “Ambassadors go out and talk to a range of community groups, organisations and social groups about stroke prevention and the need to get immediate treatment at the first sign of a stroke.” Ms Orgill said there were more than 240 strokes reported among western suburbs residents last year, but many people would not be able to recognise a stroke, even if it was happening right in front of them. “I encourage community groups to book a StrokeSafe Education talk today,” she said. “You could save someone’s life.” Contact 1300 194 196 to book a StrokeSafe talk for your community group. MY PLACE Eynesbury Photography Club’s Jason Ryan speaks to Esther Lauaki about life behind the lens.

I moved to Eynesbury five years ago. I am, unfortunately, unable to now work after injuring myself seriously at work in 1999. I have instead put all my energy into the community. I’m a member of the Eynesbury owners corporation committee, member of Panthers Basketball Club committee (holding title of boys’ junior teams co-ordinator) and member of the Bacchus Marsh Basketball Association committee. I’m also an active member of the Eynesbury Bird Enthusiasts Group, founder of the Eynesbury Astronomy Club, as well as other working groups and clubs within Eynesbury. How long has the photography club been based at Eynesbury? It started two years ago as the Eynesbury Photography Enthusiasts Club. Since then, it has grown to be the most active group in Eynesbury. Why did you start the club? Lachlan Hudson initially started the group itself, on social media. I was at home one day after being out with friends on a photo shoot, when I realised that I would like to share what I had mostly self-taught, while also learning what others might know and have to share.

I posted on the Eynesbury community page that I was playing with my camera, and would anybody like to catch up and compare some tips and tricks and share our work. Less than an hour later there were about 50-plus responses. It has now grown to more than 100 members. That was the start of a collaboration between myself and Lachlan. Can you tell me a bit about your photography background? I studied photography back in early high school, black-and-white in an old dark room. After many years of work, I decided I needed a hobby, and slowly got back into photography. What’s your photography?

Christmas Day delights Melton mums Rachel Coulton and Marian Youssef were both rapt with the gifts they received this Christmas. Both women gave birth at Bacchus Marsh hospital on December 25. Mrs Coulton and husband Jayden, of Melton, welcomed their second child, Indi Adalyn. Indi is a younger sister for Jack, aged three. “It was a bit of a shock because she came two weeks early,” Mrs Coulton said. “We didn’t know what we were having; we left it as a surprise, and when they said it was a girl, I cried. So did my husband. “The hospital staff were amazing. They put a Christmas tree in the room for me, and even

got my son a little gift because he was there on Christmas Day. “They made it really special for me and my family. I can’t thank them enough.” Ms Youssef and her husband, Ebraam Ghobros, of Caroline Springs, named their son Chris to celebrate the day he was born. They have one daughter, Celiena, who is seven years old. “He is the best Christmas gift we’ve received,” Ms Youssef said. “I feel like I ruined Christmas for all the midwives, but they were helpful and made me feel good.” Esther Lauaki

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir’s quest for the ultimate burger hits Footscray There’re two new burger joints about to open right in Footscray central. Where is it going to end? Will it ever end? Melbourne’s rather rabid fondness for new-school burger joints seems to know no limits. There seems to be one, or more, opening every week … all this activity attended by a plethora of media stories, blog posts and click-bait lists. Truth to tell, I have been a foot-dragging participant in our visit to St Burgs. I feel a bit a burger fatigue, but have been worn down by Bennie’s persistent requests. The tipping point came during our visit to try the fine Turkish fare at the taxi driver hangout, Platinum Cafe, in North Melbourne. There, Bennie asked of Nat Stockley, noted burger fan and expert: “So what is your favourite burger place?” St Burgs is the first establishment he mentions. So off we go … St Burgs is unusually located … in an apartment block down the hill from the Edgewater shopping-eating precinct. There is no parking, forcing punters to walk from the parking spots at the shops. And, so far as I can see, there are no toilets. The burger shop is tiny in terms of in-house eating, with most of the seating outdoors. Thankfully, on the Sunday we visit, the weather is fine. Whatever the challenges St Burgs presents,

My Western Fried Chicken burger ($12) is very good. Joining coleslaw, cheese and Sriracha mayo is a fat, juicy and deep-fried hunk of very flavoursome chook breast. Bennie absolutely adores his Double D burger ($14). It’s pretty much the St Burgs’ version of “with the lot”. I ask Bennie: “But isn’t it much the same as what you get at Dude Food Man or 8bit?” His reply: “No – this is better!” So there you go – the verdict is in. I find our regular chips ($5) to be disappointing – a bit limp, not very hot and liberally anointed with indifferent seasoning. Bennie agrees. We reckon deep-fried potato + salt = excellent. After losing three matches in a row and dropping from second to sixth on the division 1 ladder, Melton will take on the competition’s bottom four sides over the next four weeks. The club will need to win at least two of those matches, but more likely three, to be a serious contender for a finals berth. After Melton’s 25-shot loss to Essendon on Saturday, bowls secretary John Adams said losing some players had made the past few rounds difficult. “We have lost a few players for various reasons,” he said. “With guys moving up, that has put pressure on the division 2 and division 4 sides and we’re struggling a bit at the moment.” Melton doesn’t expect to get any of its missing players back before the end of the season. Although under pressure, Adams said confidence in the group was still high given the club’s fate was in its own hands. “I think we’re safe from relegation,” Adams said. “We’re still less than a full game out of the four and our division 2 team is only four points out of the four so it is all still in our control. “We just need to re-group. We have played good sides in the last three games Deer Park, Glenroy and Essendon.” Meanwhile, at the top end of the ladder, Deer Park will look to inflict its own brand of revenge in the division 1 competition. After suffering a shock loss to Moonee Ponds earlier in the season, the Parkers are keen to re-write past wrongs. A win would extend Deer Park’s unbeaten streak to eight matches, a remarkable turnaround given the club was 2-2 after a month of bowls. The hot run of results has instilled Deer Park as the premiership favourite heading into the business end of the season. The Parkers are 29 points clear of their nearest rival, on top of the division 1 ladder.

Attack does the job for Darley A brilliant bowling performance lifted Darley to yet another impressive win in the Ballarat Cricket Association on Saturday. After setting North Ballarat a target of 169 on the first day at Darley Park, the Lions’ attack further strengthened its reputation as one of the most dangerous bowling line-ups in the competition. With the likes of Heath Pritchard and Bradley Barnes charging in with the new ball, North Ballarat was quickly on the back foot. Brodie Bennett was the first to feel the pain, the opener losing his wicket from the first ball of the innings. The pressure was then applied on the middle-order, with Jason Crosbie (16 from 74 balls), Matthew Zakynthinos (9 from 79) and Leigh Lorenzen (9) next to go. Lorenzen’s removal by Matthew Cape saw the North Ballarat innings crash to 4-37. But ensuring the chase wouldn’t end without a fight, middle-order pair Ryan Plom (22) and Scott Wright (28) stepped up with a hard-fought partnership of 35. When Wright was lbw to Pritchard, North Ballarat folded quickly to come to an end on 99. Barnes finished with the best figures of 3-10 while Pritchard and Cape took two wickets each. Darley is now in fourth place on the A-grade ladder. The Lions have had just one two-day loss for the season. Darley will take on sixth-placed Ballarat/Redan this weekend. It was also a good weekend for the Darley Second XI which charged to an impressive win against Dunnstown. Mustangs move up field The 2016 season is looming as one of the most exciting in the history of Melton Hockey Club. After years of playing on a substandard field, the Mustangs are preparing to move to a new base at Bridge Road. As well as a state-of-the-art hybrid field, the club will also have access to a training and warm-up area, as well as a pavilion. Melton president Ron Shadbolt said the move would be a fresh start for the club. “It is ground-breaking for us,” he said. “We have played on substandard surfaces and facilities for the last seven or eight years. It has been one of the reasons we are not fully competitive. “To be playing on a hybrid field, we will now be able to introduce the game plans we know are needed for those types of fields. “It will really help our highly skilled technical players more than anything else. When you hit the ball, it won’t die like it does on the sand field.” The Mustangs expect the upgrade in facilities to also help the club when it comes to recruiting. Having had three men’s teams and three women’s teams last season, interest is high from potential new recruits keen to play in the area.

Shadbolt is hoping the Mustangs can enter eight senior teams next season. There will also be the potential to run localised competitions at Melton. “We are already getting inquiries from players who are keen to join the club,” he said. “More importantly, I expect we will be running our own local under-10 competition with a number of teams. “That means children won’t have to travel to play hockey,” Shadbolt said. “Hockey Victoria is supporting us with an in-school program as well, which should reach 1000 children.” Melton has also confirmed its coaching panel for the 2016 season. Shadbolt will once again co-coach the women’s team with David Gorton. Glenn Lawrence will lead the men’s team. Pre-season training for both sides started earlier this month, with the 2016 season set to kick off in April. Liam Twomey Melton Hockey Club players will enjoy better facilities this season. Saints cruise at the top By Liam Twomey St Anthonys was nearly perfect in its execution of Saturday’s Gisborne District Cricket Association match against Ashfield. The Saints cruised to a 107-run victory, smashing 164 from its 40 overs after batting first. Top order trio Wayne Turner, Ryan Dobbie and Paul Scott combined for 98 runs. Cashing in on the hot start, lower order batsman Jason Orr blasted three fours in a quick-fire 28 to put his side in the box seat. In reply, Ashfield met a barrage of firepower in the middle, to which it had no answer, bowled out for just 57. Daniel Tennant and Shane Newton were the pick of the bowlers. Tennant finished the match with 4-12, while Newton claimed 3-15. The weekend’s win maintains St Anthonys’ outstanding start to the season. The Saints are undefeated on top of the B-grade ladder and take on seventh-placed Lancefield this week. Meanwhile, in A-grade results, Diggers Rest Bulla secured a nail-biting win against Romsey. Set 138 for victory by Romsey, Diggers Rest looked to be cruising at 2-52 but the loss of three quick wickets put the match back on an even keel. Middle-order batsman Lindon Dowsett was intent on making sure his side didn’t miss out on reeling in the small total. Dowsett scored what proved to be a match winning 42, as Diggers Rest went on to pass its target with two wickets remaining. Also in A-grade, it was a close finish between Bacchus Marsh and Sunbury United. With 175 from its 40 overs, Bacchus Marsh bowled Sunbury out for 169 in the final over. Missed opportunities cost Melton its Victorian Sub District Cricket Association match on Saturday. Taking on Brighton, the Lions won the toss and batted, with all members of the club’s top seven reaching double figures. However, with a top score of just 26, the Lions were unable to cash in on the promising start, and were bowled out for 144 in the 64th over. In reply, Brighton was forced to fight for every run, and was in all sorts of trouble at 8-87 before a lower order partnership saved the day. Jack Rutter and David Harrod added a vital 50 runs to lift their side to the win. In other VSDCA results, Yarraville defeated Elsternwick, Werribee got the better of Oakleigh and Malvern was too good for Sunshine.
