Anger at Fiskville jobs loss Moorabool mayor Paul Tatchell has slammed the Country Fire Authority’s decision to make redundant 41 hospitality workers employed at the Fiskville training base, which closed in March. The CFA announced last week it “no longer needed” the workers, who will finish with the organisation by the end of this month. Although they have been promised separation packages based on their length of service, only 25 were eligible to undertake CFA-funded retraining in horticulture, aged-care, nursing or administration. Cr Tatchell, who has been advocating for a new training station in the town, described the CFA offer as a “Band-Aid to a shark bite” and questioned its purpose. “What is the point of upskilling someone if there’s no job to go to?” Cr Tatchell asked. “The original discussion around the closure was to provide investment in the region, with the prospect of employment for those people. It’s been six months and the CFA haven’t provided a single job.” Cr Tatchell said the CFA and state government were deluded if they thought unemployment would be solved with separation packages. The closure of the Fiskville site is being felt throughout the region and local economy, with dozens of retail and tradespeople feeling its brunt. “You can’t just hope something will go away. You can’t take regional jobs out of regional areas,” Cr Tatchell said.

“There’s no reasonable investment put into Moorabool to ensure these people have opportunities in regional Victoria. “The state and federal governments just think we’re a road between Melton and Ballarat. “But there are 200 square kilometres of real people and real issues here, and a lack of serious investment.” CFA chief executive Michael Wootten said he understood this was a very difficult time for people

- Paul Tatchell who had contributed significantly to the CFA. “Anyone who passed through Fiskville benefited from the hospitality staff’s work, with the dedicated group cooking meals for staff, catering for trainees and cleaning the site after brigades headed home,” Mr Wootten said. “Our focus now is to work with our people to ensure they receive the support they need.” Emergency Services Minister Jane Garrett praised the CFA for its offer. “With this package, affected staff will have the opportunity to hone their skills or re-train to assist them in finding more work in the future,” she said. United Voice, which represents hospitality workers across the state, was contacted for comment.

Catholic Education Melbourne has unveiled plans to build a primary school at Bacchus Marsh’s newest development. The Stonehill estate, by developer Devine, will also have community facilities and public meeting rooms near the new school. The Melbourne archdiocese has bought a 2.6-hectare property on McCormacks Road, with plans to build a primary school that’s due to open by 2021. The new school will accommodate up to 400 students, and will be sited next to a proposed $20 million shopping centre. Catholic Education executive director Stephen Elder said the primary school would add an extra, and much-needed, amenity for the area’s residents. “Right across Victoria, more parents are turning to a Catholic education for their children than ever before,” Mr Elder said. “New and expanding communities now simply expect a Catholic school is part of their neighbourhood.” Just 1.5 kilometres from Bacchus Marsh train station, the Stonehill estate will eventually house almost 4000 people. Devine’s general manager Andrew Brimblecombe said they were excited about Catholic Education Melbourne’s decision to invest at Bacchus Marsh. “The western growth corridor is rapidly expanding and a new school will help satisfy demand for new educational facilities in the area,” Mr Brimblecombe said. “We are excited that residents will have access to quality primary schooling, just moments from their own homes. “ They should also see increases to their property values, due to the proximity to [a school],” he said.

Toddler drowns in backyard pool By Sumeyya Ilanbey Parents are urged not to take their eyes off their children around water following the death of a toddler in a backyard pool at his Melton South home last week. Two-year-old Elijah Meldrum was found in a pool at a Moorshead Street home, just before 1.30pm on Monday, September 14. Elijah’s mother attempted to revive him, but was not successful. The family said the pool gate didn’t lock properly and was flimsy. The toddler’s death came on the eve of the release of Royal Life Saving Australia’s

national drowning report for 2014/15, which shows a 30 per cent increase in drowning deaths in children under the age of four. Almost one in 10 drowning deaths involved children, and more than half of those deaths were due to them falling into water. Life Saving Victoria principal research associate Bernadette Matthews said the death of Elijah was tragic, and she urged parents to keep their young ones within arm’s reach. “We really feel for the family and everyone, including those from the emergency services,” Dr Matthews said. “Drowning really affects so many people. urging people to supervise their children around the water.” Parents should ensure gates around family pools are always locked, and they also need to learn how to do CPR, Dr Matthews said. And while coastal drownings made up almost 50 per cent of deaths, a third of

drownings happened in inland waterways, such as rivers, creeks, streams, lakes and dams. “[Inland waterways] can be cold, have strong currents and soft edges,” Dr Matthews said. “So you really need to check with locals about the conditions, and also to remember conditions can change.” The report found men made up 90 per cent of all fatal and non-fatal drownings in the past year. There were 39 drownings in Victoria in the last year, an increase on previous years.

From drab to fab A drab Melton street corner has been splashed with colour and fun. Melton council and VicHealth have transformed the corner of Palmerston and McKenzie streets into a vibrant and bright play space for the community. A pop-up park had been designed for the vacant land and will be launched on Thursday with much fanfare, including free children’s entertainment, Zumba demonstrations and giant games. Melton mayor Sophie Ramsey said the pop-up park featured shipping containers used as outdoor rooms, hard-floor standing areas, moveable seating and a ping-pong table. “The pop-up park is a great way to use a space to test designs, get feedback from people, and show what the Melton town centre can be like before formal construction

begins on redevelopment,” Cr Ramsey said. Young people of Melton will transform the ping-pong table into a public art piece while members of Melton library’s knitting group will yarn bomb parts of the park. Brigade to show off new digs Eynesbury Country Fire Authority volunteers have used a small shed as their brigade headquarters for three years – big enough to fit one truck, but nothing more. So when the fireys moved into their new station at St Arnauds Road, it was a “big leap forward”. Now they’re looking forward to showing off their new emergency centre. “We were very limited in what we could and couldn’t do beyond our operational response,” first lieutenant Shane Bailey said. “It’s definitely a big step forward to have a facility that fits two trucks comfortably and is able to train volunteers.” The team has organised an open day next month and is looking forward to meeting everyone … especially the youngsters. “We open the doors of the station to allow the community to meet the volunteers and find out what we do, and answer any questions they may have,” Mr Bailey said. “And it’s a fun way for the kids to get involved.” The new station includes two bays for fire trucks, a dedicated training space, a kitchen and storage shed. The open day is Sunday, October 11, 1.30-4pm. A golf day to raise money for the brigade will be held on Friday, October 16, from 7am. Tickets: $120. Melton council’s new media policy is a threat to councillors’ freedom of speech, locals believe. At this month’s meeting, councillors adopted a policy that restricts them from making comments to the media that don’t portray councillors and the mayor as a “united team working for the betterment of the city”. As reported by Star Weekly Weekly, state MPs dubbed the policy as an “outrageous attack” on freedom of speech and “bureaucratic bullshit”. Cambridge, Coburn and Watts Residents Association president Angela Scarpaci said she feared for councillors’ freedom of speech. “I’ve read the policy … and I don’t agree with it at all,” Ms Scarpaci said. “We elect the people we feel represent our municipality the greatest … if they don’t have the freedom to go to the media it defeats the purpose of having councillors.” Karen and Danny Ellis, who commented on Star Weekly’s Facebook page, believe the policy could “indirectly gag” residents. “We strongly agree that this measure is an attack on freedom of speech,” they said. “What is unstable in Melton City Council for it to want to have this lack of free speech and control measures in place? “What is council trying to control besides individual councillors? “Maybe it’s the individual self-interests of a few that’s at play.” Wayne McKail urged residents to not let issues such as the media policy be swept under the carpet. “It’s up to us to correct this – just one or two people will not sort this out,” he said. “It’s up to us to make sure this does not happen. We can make a difference.”

Free speech ‘gagged’

[Re: Councillor gag outrage, Star Weekly Weekly, September 15] Some of our Melton councillors are too comfortable because they have been in their roles for years. They are also precious because they do not want to be criticised. It now appears that anyone who wants to have a say and criticise our council and/or these precious councillors, will be told to tow the party line. We agree with Bernie Finn and Don Nardella as reported … it is an attack on freedom of speech, not just for the individual councillor/s who may be gagged by council management, but also it’s a gag on the residents and ratepayers, who will be indirectly gagged from having their say via their councillors. Body mystery plea

Police are appealing for information following the grisly discovery of a body at Mt Cottrell. Passers-by found the body of a young man on the banks of a creek near Dukelows Road, while walking in the area just before 3pm last Wednesday. Principal buoyed by top-up cash By Sumeyya Ilanbey A $680,000 funding boost for Melton Secondary College will help improve students literacy, numeracy and creative thinking, principal David Reynolds believes. Last week, the state government announced $747 million in extra funding to state schools for next year, with Melton schools receiving $5.4 million. Melton Secondary College will get the largest sum ($680,000) in the area, followed by Coburn Primary School ($648,000) and Kurunjang Secondary College ($633,000).

Mr Reynolds said the school would use the extra funding to expand programs that focus on literacy and numeracy, and would possibly employ extra staff. “If we hadn’t received the funding, I think it would’ve meant we would’ve have to spread current funds very, very carefully,” he said. “We would have been unable to provide such strong support for the literacy and numeracy priorities we have. “The challenge is for all students to make that fantastic growth … and that requires more funding when we have students who are at such different levels.

“The approach we’re taking is strongly supported by research and we are starting to see improvement.” Mr Reynolds said the school, which places a big emphasis on student health and happiness, had developed several programs to support students and the extra state government funding would help the school deliver those programs. One of the municipality’s most chronically over-crowded schools, Melton Specialist School, received less than $100,000. Acting principal Evan Savage refused to be drawn on whether or not the funding would

be sufficient to address issues the school is facing. “The additional equity funding that our school will receive in 2016 is a positive announcement for the school community,” Mr Savage said in a statement. “While there are many possible ways that this funding may be used to make improvements to the school, this is a decision that will be made during term four as we identify priorities based on the needs of the students and the school as a whole.” Melton MP Don Nardella said the extra funding was exactly what schools in the area needed.

Lynne McDonnell keeps a diary of all the 122 children she has “mothered” – when they came and left, how long they stayed, their birthdays, and memories they’ve shared. Some of those children were difficult, Ms McDonnell agrees, but all craved four things – love, stability, cuddles and a place to call home. A carer for 18 years with Melton Foster Care, Ms McDonnell still remembers her first two girls. “One was five, and one was two-and-a-half, and I remember the day they came into my house,” Ms McDonnell says. “They were very nervous and stayed with me for 12 months, but it was a big learning curve because, naturally, they’re different to your own children.” While she says she started foster caring for a selfish reason (“I wanted more kids”), Ms McDonnell hasn’t looked back since she started helping out vulnerable little people.

Trees stolen from honour avenue By Sumeyya Ilanbey Locals are reeling after vandals ripped out Avenue of Honour saplings dedicated to fallen Coimadai soldiers. Earlier this year, the Coimadai Avenue of Honour Restoration Association planted 129 young trees along the Diggers Rest-Coimadai Road to commemorate the 129 local men and women who served during the First World War. But some time on the night of August 31, vandals ripped out nine kurrajong trees and

one red box eucalypt. Association chairman Ken McDonald said members were “bitterly” disappointed the trees had been vandalised and stolen. “We’re not happy at all,” he said. “The trees were planted by the community and a lot of community effort went into it, and it’s just so disappointing to see this.” The 10 trees, estimated to be valued at more than $550, cannot be replaced until next year. “I just hope we don’t lose any more; I have no expectation these people will be found, but let’s hope they don’t steal more,” Mr McDonald said.

There are no CCTV cameras near the Avenue of Honour, which stretches for about 1.6 kilometres, but Mr McDonald said the community was now on high alert. Senior Constable Nick Wallace, of Bacchus Marsh police, said he was disappointed someone would act in such a despicable way. “It’s just disappointing, obviously. They’ve gone to a lot of effort to plant the trees in honour of the fallen soldiers,” he said. While police have no suspects, Senior Constable Wallace said he didn’t believe there was a “hidden agenda” behind the theft.

“I’d only be guessing the reason for taking them, so I don’t know for sure, but I can only assume that some people are stealing trees to plant them in their own garden.” He urged anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or Bacchus Marsh police on 5366 4500. The Avenue of Honour was first planted in 1918, but its trees sank into Lake Merrimu. In June, more than 400 people turned up to see Veterans Affairs Minister Senator Michael Ronaldson open a revamped Avenue of Honour.

Balliang kids tune up Singing the same song at the same time with students across Australia has become a tradition for students at Balliang East Primary School. In the past four years, students at Balliang East Primary have taken part in the Music: Count Us In (MCUI) initiative. The national event involves more than 500,000 students at more than 2100 schools live-streaming across the nation as they sing the same song simultaneously. This year’s mentor for MCUI is Marcia Hines, who has worked closely with this year’s student songwriters and program ambassador John Foreman to create the MCUI song, Gold. really good initiative that reflects a positive outlook on music.”. Colour them happy By Neslim Djemal Colouring-in is back in fashion and popular, at least, at Villa Maria Catholic Homes Providence aged-care home in Bacchus Marsh where residents have been embracing the benefits of colouring-in for the past six weeks. Lifestyle co-ordinator Colleen Bushall said the Colour Me Calm program had become extremely popular with the 57 residents. “We didn’t know what to expect when we started the program, but now we’re running sessions almost daily,” she said.

Ms Bushall said the benefits of colouring-in included decreased stress levels, increased concentration, promotion of co-ordination and fine motor skills, and the recovery of positive childhood memories. “We have one resident who doesn’t really participate in activities,” she said. “However, after some encouraging to give colouring-in a go, he’s now very interested and can sit and colour all afternoon.” Resident Kata Mijailovic said the activity had improved her quality of life. “My arm is sore but I can do little bits at a

Police believe neighbours hold the clue to the death of a Springbank man whose body was found on his 90th birthday. Ken Handford, known as Kenny, was found by a neighbour at his Barkstead Road home last Tuesday. It’s believed he could have been dead for several days. Detective Inspector Mick Hughes said the war veteran’s death could be linked to a burglary as the property had been rummaged through. “It hasn’t been ransacked, but it’s been searched. The drawers are open; clearly someone’s gone through the property,” he said. “I’d suggest they’re linked. I can’t see otherwise why you’d go into a 90-year-old man’s farm property.” Mr Handford was last seen on Sunday, September 13, when he had coffee with a neighbour at about midday. Police are trying to trace his steps after this and are urging the tightknit Springbank community to help them. “I’m asking the local residents for their assistance,” Detective Inspector Hughes said. “Investigators want to hear from anyone who may have seen anything suspicious around the property, or who is aware of any concerns Mr Handford may have had.” Mr Handford’s family said the ex-RAAF member, who fought in WWII, did not deserve to die under such circumstances. were able to fight their way back into the contest. Diggers Rest began wresting back control of the ball through the middle of the ground and was more precise with its kicking coming out of the defensive 50. It resulted in the Burras booting the next six goals to cut the margin to just two points early in the third term. “We came back really strongly and that’s all you can ask,” Payne said. “You need to show a bit of ticker and do the right thing as a team. It’s a team that wins the grand final, not individuals.” Just when it looked as though a comeback win was on the cards, Romsey regrouped. With Stephen Burlak causing havoc up forward, the Redbacks went on a run and kicked the final six goals of the third term to extend the margin to a game-high 41 points. For Diggers Rest to win, everything had to go right for the Burras in the fourth term and it started in the best possible fashion. Jason Williams took control of his side’s 50-metre arc, kicking three of the quarter’s first four goals. He added a fourth 15 minutes later and with eight minutes remaining the margin had been sliced to 14 points. The Burras were unable to land the killer blow and although Romsey failed to kick any more goals, it did enough to win. “We have some great partners on board at our club and we have some great players, but it doesn’t matter if you’re undefeated during the year or if you finish sixth, getting to that grand final is all that matters,” Payne said.

Sunday’s grand final delivered another dose of heartache for Diggers Rest. A 10-point defeat by Romsey in the Riddell District Football League decider means the Burras have finished runners-up three years in a row, losing by a combined margin of just 35 points. Diggers Rest president Chris Payne described the 15.19 (109)-14.15 (99) loss as shattering. “Losing three grand finals in a row is hard to cop,” he said. “It’s quite devastating; what else can you say?” After beating Romsey in the semi-final two weeks earlier, the Burras went into Sunday’s match fresh from a week off. But the extended break was forgotten when the ball was bounced and defending champions Romsey made the better start. The Redbacks dominated the contest out of the middle, claiming a number of key centre clearance breaks and easily winning the inside-50 count. The margin was 25 points by quarter-time and goals from Phillip Lobb, Mitchell Farmer and Bradley Mitchell made it 39. Payne said after the match it had been frustrating to see his team’s errors turn into quick goals for the Redbacks. “The guys always give 100 per cent. Written-off Redbacks pin up another premiership flag Romsey has been written off many times this season by many keen observers of the Riddell District Football League. First time was in pre-season when they lost a number of players from last year’s premiership side. It happened again when they were thrashed by Riddell in the middle of the year, and again after they lost to Diggers Rest in a semi-final two weeks ago. But, on Sunday, the Redbacks proved the pundits wrong, securing a second successive premiership in their defeat of Diggers Rest, 15.19 (109)-14.15 (99). Redbacks’ coach Dean Helmers said he didn’t have the same feeling walking onto the ground as he did before last year’s game “It was not our aim at the start of the year to win the premiership,” he admitted after the new triumph. “We filled our side this year with lots of local kids. “When I turned up to the game, I thought if we got done, I’d be disappointed but I’d accept it and understand why,” Helmers said. “Last year, there was no way I could afford to lose.” The Redbacks used the breeze early and led by as much as 39 points in the second quarter, seemingly headed for an easy win. Then the Burras got going, reducing the margin to six points when Luke Smailes kicked the first goal of the third term. The Redbacks hit back through an unlikely source: co-captain Steve Burlak. “You always have to have something up your sleeve,” Helmers said. “Full credit to our back line; they were doing

a good enough job [that I could move Steve forward]. He had an immediate impact and kicked two goals; three goals for the game.” There was still another twist in the story when the Burras staged another comeback, but the final margin of 10 points was the closest they would get this time. “I toyed with the idea of going an extra man in defence, but I had confidence in the boys and we held our nerve to make [the opposition] slow it down a bit,” Helmers said. “Diggers were really up for that last quarter and didn’t want to die wondering; they threw everything at us. I was asking, ‘How long [to go], how long?’.”

For the Redbacks, the grand final proved they had fielded their best side in a year interrupted by injures and lack of numbers at training. “When they play their best footy, they are hard to stop, and I needed an extra commitment from them to get them to here,” Helmers said. “It shows the rewards are there if you put in the work. It was a matter of them believing it, and the proof is in the pudding. “That’s probably the best team we’ve had all year – no disrespect to the others who played earlier. “We’ve played a lot of kids this year and they’re getting better and better.”

Helmers, who is still weighing up his coaching future, had not only the game to worry about on Sunday but also his heavily pregnant wife Nicola. “She’s 39 weeks and due today or tomorrow,” Helmers said. “We were a little bit worried she would go into labour today. All week we’ve been thinking, please don’t go on the grand final day. Roos beat injury curse to win flag It was a real team effort that carried Sunbury Kangaroos reserves to a second successive Riddell District Football League premiership. A total of 57 players pulled on the boots for the Kangaroos this season as they and their senior side struggled with injuries. As many as 10 reserves were playing in the seniors at times during the season, meaning the reserves had to go scouting for players. But everything came together on grand final day as the Kangaroos overturned a three- quarter time deficit to beat Diggers Rest 9.13 (67)-7.7 (49). It was the Burras’ first loss for the season. It was never going to be a high-scoring game after only two goals, both to the Burras, in the opening quarter. The Kangaroos, kicking with the wind, finally got on the board in the second quarter and four goals to none saw them lead by 14 points at half-time.

The second half was a repeat of the first, the Burras doing the early damage to get a lead before the Kangaroos came back at them. Five last-quarter goals ensured the Kangaroos were premiers again. Joeb Ploog was awarded the Tom Sankey medal for best on ground, while Brad Sluggett and Tom Evans were best for the Burras. For Kangaroos coach Wayne Meacham the win was as emotional as last year’s. “It’s amazing,” he said after the game. “For the year we’ve had, with 57 players in the reserves and seniors . . . we just had to keep playing everyone we could find. “I was calling people on Friday nights asking them to play ... but we kept winning, no matter who we brought in. “It’s a very simple game plan; our best player knows what our worst player is going to do and that’s what I’ve worked on all year.” Despite being down at the last break,

Meacham was confident of a win. “I’ve never seen a football team apply so much pressure all over the ground,” he said. “I knew we would outstay them. “[Diggers Rest] had been in front all year and knew what to do then but didn’t know what to do when behind. “It was about not losing our heads.” Meacham said he was lucky to get most of his regular players back for the finals. One person in the reserves’ premiership side did not intend to play this season: Meacham himself. “The boots are just about taped together,” he said. “I can’t take any more of this. Jets laud shining Knight By Liam Twomey Lachlan Knight’s name will forever be remembered at the Western Jets. After a brilliant season for the TAC Cup side, Knight last week won the Jets’ best and fairest award. He enjoyed an ultra-consistent year in which he was named among the club’s best six players in nine of his 14 matches. Western Jets region manager Shane Sexton said it was great to see Knight get a prolonged run after injuries halted his progress in previous years. “Lachlan should be really proud of his season,” Sexton said. “It’s the first time he has had a run at a footy season in a very long time. He’s had both his shoulders reconstructed over the past couple of years but has got himself up and running and he has been playing excellent footy.” Recovering from shoulder injuries was the theme of the night for the top end of the Jets’ best and fairest leader board. Mitchell Norton came second in the voting, also bouncing back from operations. The longer the season went, the better Norton looked, the teenager being named his side’s outright best player in two of his final four matches. “Mitchell has had quite a few setbacks over the journey,” Sexton said. “He also had both shoulders needing reconstruction. “He’s a terrific player. We would have been a hell of a lot better last year if he’d been up and about. “In his first year as a 17-year-old he kicked about 20 goals in his first six games. “Towards the end of the year he was flying and playing great football.” Sexton said he expected both Knight and Norton to play strongly next year. Also in the best and fairest, Jackson Volpato was named the club’s best defensive player, Brayden Monk received the ‘most courageous player’ gong, and Wilson Berry was crowned ‘most consistent’. Oscar Junker received the best first-year player award and key defender Liam Carter won the coaches’ award. “Liam really developed his footy this year and he also played some games at Williamstown in the VFL,” Sexton said. “He played on all the good tall forwards in the competition and was rarely beaten. He improved his offensive play a lot this year, as well.” With the Jets missing out on finals this season, the club has quickly turned its attention to 2016. All exit interviews with top-age players have been held as they await November’s national and rookie drafts. Invitations for the Jets’ summer training will be sent out this week. Bombers fly to take a turn at the top After being the dominant team in the past two seasons, Riddell finally has a Riddell District Netball Association A-grade premiership to show for it. Having fallen at the final hurdle last season, the Bombers weren’t going to make the same mistake this year against Macedon. It was the Bombers’ show from midway through the second quarter. Lauren Close and Christine Harris, who suffered grand final heartache last year, set the tone early in the 51-34 win. Close was in everything at the defensive end while Harris was converting her teammates’ hard work down the court. For playing-coach Close, getting a good start was vital. “It’s fantastic and I can’t wipe the smile off my face,” she said. “We talked before the game about coming out strong, which we didn’t do last grand final day. “That burnt in our bellies and we brought it on to the court.” Another key area was shutting down star Cats goaler Bec Colwell. “We really worked on our structures from last time we played them and what we did well,” Close said. “I came out into goal defence in the last bit of that game and it seemed to work. Danni [Davidson] could handle playing on Bec one on one. “We talked a lot about using our voices and connecting with each other in the ring. “We had to shut Bec down, that was our main goal.” Close paid credit to the Bombers’ mid-court players. Their good hands made it hard for the Cats to move the ball into attack. A bonus for the Bombers was the experienced Lee Chicas taking to the court after suffering a calf injury in their preliminary final win over Rupertswood. “The physio gave her the all clear so we were rapt,” Close said. Harris was the game-high scorer with 34 goals from 47 attempts. “I had a bit of a chat to her about what some of the issues were the last time we played Macedon, “ Close said. “She stood her ground, which she’s good at … then she turns and shoots and gets them in.” Goal attack Mikaela Vaughan was named best on court by the umpires. The decision to move Vaughan from goal shooter to goal attack in the last part of the season was successful. “We put the question into Macedon’s minds about whether they would move Kate McLeod out of goal keeper to play on Mikaela,” Close said. The Bombers stayed with the same line-up for three and a half quarters before bringing on Lauren Anglin and Elyce Carlyle for the final minutes. For Close, a grand final victory was a stark contrast to last season when she had to watch from the sidelines after knee surgery. “It was double heartache,” she said. “I did my knee and then I watched us lose a grand final. This feeling is amazing.” Despite tasting premiership success in her first year as coach, Close says it was anything but easy – to the extent she called on RDNL netball manager Kim Bailey for assistance. Devils in heaven as drought ends By Liam Twomey Darley capped off a thrilling season with a fairytale finish in the Ballarat Football League grand final on Saturday. The Devils dominated every aspect of their clash with North Ballarat City to be 61-point winners. Their name was engraved on the premiership cup for the first time in 20 years. While no one could split the two sides in the lead-up to the match, it didn’t take Darley long to assert its dominance on the contest. After a tough first quarter, Darley took control in the second term, with Matthew Inglis booting the opening two goals. Holding the advantage on the scoreboard served only to fire up the Devils even more, and they ensured there would be no relaxing the pressure as half-time approached. With the back six controlling proceedings, Darley added one more goal through Dane Grenfell to extend the margin to 21 points at the main break. The Devils stepped up the dominance at both ends in the second half and, for the second time in the match, North Ballarat City was goalless for a quarter while the Devils slammed on another three majors. From there, the last 30 minutes was party time for the Darley players, supporters and coaching staff. Richard Knight, Leigh Spiteri, Shane O’Bree and Ryan Closter hit the scoreboard in the final term to seal the 11.18 (84)-3.5 (23) win. Devils coach Jarrod Edwards spoke to Star Weekly as celebrations were in full swing at the club on Saturday night. “The boys are up and about, that’s for sure,” he said. “It really is an incredible feeling. We just came out and we were ‘on’. Everything fell our way. “I was a little concerned with our goal

kicking in the first quarter – 1.8 – but once we got that sorted, it was all good. The pressure from the boys in the second and third quarters was great and I’m just so proud of this group.” Nathan Lyons capped off his outstanding season for Darley in the best possible fashion, winning best-on-ground honours. Lyons booted a goal and was instrumental in applying pressure on some of City’s key players. He was well supported by Anthony Chiu, while

up forward Grenfell kicked four goals and Inglis two. “Nathan really deserved the medal today; he was fantastic,” Edwards said. “Anthony was great and my brother, Jake, was awesome, too. “It’s a special feeling to play in a premiership with my brother. It’s something I’ll remember forever.” On what was a tough day for North Ballarat,

Simon McCartin and Sam Willian were named among City’s best players. “This is huge for the club,” Edwards said. “[A premiership] has been a long time coming and we’re really enjoying it. “People love this club. We had between 200 and 300 people at training during the week. You can’t move around the clubrooms at the moment, there are people everywhere. We’ll be celebrating for a while yet.”

Four years take Darley from bottom to top Darley Football Club started planning its path to the top of the Ballarat Football League four years ago. The Devils were coming off a disastrous 2011 season in which they lost all 16 matches. But all the hard work proved to be worth it last Saturday, with Darley well and truly going from zero to hero. Devils’ vice-president, Mark Shelly, said the changes started when the club appointed Rod MacPherson as head coach. “We hit rock bottom in 2011,” he said. “The first thing we did was appoint Rod as our new senior coach, and that was done to change

the culture within the club. Rod was a hard taskmaster and he set the bar really high for the boys. “He always said he wouldn’t be head coach for a long time, but he did an amazing job of starting us in the right direction. “Jarrod Edwards has come in since [as head coach] and done a fantastic job. To cap off all the hard work with a premiership is an amazing feeling.” Saturday’s flag is the club’s first since 1995. On that occasion, the Devils beat Melton when the two clubs competed in the Riddell District Football League.

Darley did come close to breaking its drought in 2008 but suffered a heartbreaking loss when Ballarat kicked a goal after the siren to win by five points. After returning to the top echelon of the BFL, the Devils are intent on making their stay a long one. “We have been close to winning premierships before,” Shelly said. “I think that’s why we will work so hard to continue to drive the standards that we want to set going into next year. We want to capitalise on this and do it again.”

Steven Kennedy is unlikely to have a better week in his football career. Five days before he celebrated a premiership, Kennedy was named winner of the 2015 Premix King Henderson Medal, presented to the best player in the Ballarat Football League. Kennedy won with 24 votes from Lake Wendouree’s Stephen Clifton, who finished on 17. Darley vice-president Mark Shelly said Kennedy’s achievements were a classic case of reward for effort. “Steven is a super footballer,” he said. “It’s about more than what he does on the field, though – he brings a standard of excellence to the club in everything he does. “From his training to his preparation, he’s 100 per cent professional. I don’t think he has missed a single session all year. “As a club, those sort of people are what get you on the right path … it’s great for our younger guys to see that.” Kennedy was named outright ‘best on ground’ seven times during the home and away season and represented the Ballarat Football League in its interleague match against Bendigo. The right stuff for women on the road Don’t know how to change a tyre or want to know what’s under the bonnet of your car? Learning how to be car-savvy and stay safe on our roads is the aim of the Women in Motion workshop to be held on Wednesday, October 14. Harrison Hyundai will host the free safety and vehicle maintenance workshop to help female motorists be safe and deal to with problems on the road. The workshop will cover such topics as driver awareness, road safety, how to change a flat tyre and how to start a car with a flat battery. “This is a community service program created in response to high demand from our female drivers,” say Harrison Hyundai service manager Brad LeSueur (pictured with Konstantina). The workshop is held once a year and Brad says more than 30 women have attended each time. “Many women come back multiple times and participants range in ages from learners to older drivers,” he says. “We go through some basic skills, such as changing a tyre and how to check the levels under the bonnet, as well as what to do in an emergency.” Brad says some women may not feel confident when taking their car in for a check-up, so he hopes the workshop will provide them more of an understanding of their cars’ mechanics. The evening will be a mixture of advice and hands-on learning in a fun environment. Seats are limited to 50. Bookings are required.
