Virus fight: GPs in dark By Goya Dmytryshchak A leading doctor says GPs are not equipped to deal with a potential outbreak of coronavirus and is calling for “sentinel practices” to be established. It comes as Australia on Sunday had its first death among more than 30 confirmed cases of COVID-19, with more than 60 countries impacted and a new travel ban imposed on foreign nationals travelling from Iran to Australia. Altona North GP Mukesh Haikerwal said aside from some masks from the federal government, doctors had received little support for dealing with patients presenting with symptoms of the disease. “We’re not going to face the bullet without a bulletproof vest,” said the former Australian Medical Association president and World Medical Association council chair.

- Mukesh Haikerwal “We feel quite unsupported in general practice land. “Everybody is telling us to receive patients, screen patients from Bali and so on, but there’s been precious-little support in terms of maybe a few masks come in from federal and nothing really from state. “No advice about what to do if we received a case and about cleaning the practice up after the case has been through – and you’ve got to keep the room empty – and a lack of understanding that if you shut down a couple of rooms you can decimate a practice. “I’d probably end up sending people to casualty rather than keeping them in your practice because you couldn’t afford not to run your practice.” A worker at a major Melbourne hospital said a lot of GPs did not want to take in suspected coronavirus patients and told patients to go to the emergency department, while the hospital was directing people to call the dedicated hotline on 1800 675 398. Dr Haikerwal said clear messaging and material support for doctors was needed. “We want more concerted action so that we are not just saying nice things but actually are prepared if the worst does happen,” he said. “At the moment, we’re just hoping that the worst doesn’t happen.

“I think there’s no point just being prepared, we need to be actively working through the scenario that this is upon us. “It may mean that certain practices are set up as what we call ‘sentinel practices’, that are geared up and prepared with gear and people and training so that they can take the load off the rest of the practices. “Even in hospitals, you wouldn’t just go to an emergency department in hospital; even in hospitals there need to be sentinel areas like that.” Hospitals in Melbourne’s west are braced for the potential impact of a COVID-19 pandemic,

bringing together a team of staff with experience in infectious disease prevention and management, Western Health executive director Natasha Toohey said. She said the team had been developing contingency plans for responding to a “pandemic”. “Western Health has experts on staff who have many decades of expertise in responding to infectious disease outbreaks,” Ms Toohey said. “They are monitoring directions from the Australian government’s chief medical officer, Victoria’s chief health officer, and liaise
frequently with health officials at the state and national level.” Ms Toohey said Western Health had not treated any confirmed cases at this time, however measures were in place to quickly identify and isolate patients with suspected COVID-19. “We are planning for how high volumes of patients could be managed and how this would impact other services we provide,” she said. “This is an evolving situation and we are monitoring and modifying our response.” – with Benjamin Millar

Crime team to tackle toxic waste By Benjamin Millar Dangerous chemical and toxic waste stockpiles are being targeted by a new waste crime investigation team set up in the wake of the toxic Tottenham warehouse blaze and other fires resulting from the illegal dumping of dangerous goods. The state government last week announced a $71 million push to tackle illegal stockpiles of chemicals, rubbish and recycling hidden in warehouses across Melbourne’s western and northern suburbs.
Created as a new division within the Environment Protection Authority, the Waste Crime Prevention Inspectorate will be responsible for monitoring and prosecuting waste industry cowboys who fail to abide by regulations around the safe collection and disposal of harmful materials including chemical waste and asbestos. The team will liaise closely with WorkSafe Victoria, local councils, emergency service agencies and other regulators to improve co-ordination of information sharing, following criticism that rogue operators flew
under the radar due to a lack of co-operation. Environment Minister Lily D’Ambrosio said the investment would help to clean up the industry and make it fairer for businesses that do the right thing. “For too long, waste crime has undermined Victoria’s recycling sector with dangerous and illegal stockpiling,” she said. The waste squad is just one part of ‘Recycling Victoria’, a $300 million package that will roll out a four bin recycling system statewide and introduce a container deposit scheme by 2023, similar to that operating in other states.
Waste collection will be declared an “essential service”, with a new dedicated authority in charge of the recycling system. The plan also sets ambitious new goals for improved recycling, with a diversion target of 80 per cent. These targets will create investment certainty for businesses, while promoting jobs and growth in the industry, Ms D’Ambrosio said. New grants will be offered to help businesses cut waste and increase recycling in their daily operations. Ms D’Ambrosio said the package will be partly funded via an increase in the landfill levy over coming years.

Board moves on the Maribyrnong The country’s top wakeboarding talent will be making a splash in the Maribyrnong River next week when Footscray hosts the 2020 Australia Wakeboard Nationals. Based at Footscray Park from March 11 to 14, the event brings together the best junior and senior wakeboarders. Wakeboard Victoria president Stan Miriklis said the event will kick off about 9am
Wednesday near the rowing club. “We will have everyone from rookies to pro wakeboarders on the Maribyrnong River in Footscray Park,” he said. “It’s a free community event, there is going to be food trucks and a licensed area where people can have a couple of drinks and watch the action.” The family-friendly event will also feature boat expos as well as live music on Wednesday
night and a DJ on Friday night. Mr Miriklis said a series of heats will be held to determine who will make the finals on Friday afternoon and Saturday. “There will be a big air comp on the Friday night and a jetski show as well,” he said. Details: wakeboardaustralia.com.au
Almost 100 residents have signed a petition calling for urgent safety improvements to an “extremely dangerous” Yarraville intersection. The petition, requesting changes at the intersection of Severn Street and Francis Street, was tabled at Maribyrnong council’s February meeting with 97 signatures. It suggested the intersection is “extremely dangerous” because of the volume of vehicle and bicycle traffic on Francis Street, and the volume of traffic turning onto Severn Street from Francis Street as a rat-running alternative to Williamstown Road. The petition also cited traffic turning off Severn Street onto Francis Street for school drop-offs and the use of Severn Street for people driving to the nearby Coles supermarket. “Multiple accidents or near misses have occurred here, with many individuals stating there is limited availability to using an alternative route,” the petition states. “We, the petitioners, are requesting significant alterations be made to the intersection, such as installation of traffic lights or a crossing to aid in creating the safe and efficient movement of traffic at all times of the day, whilst catering to all types of road users.” Further factors cited as safety issues included vehicles parked on Francis Street impairing visibility and the use of Severn Street as a bus route. A Newport man will be fined nearly $1000 after being caught catching undersize snapper last week. Fisheries officers saw the man putting small snapper in a bucket and hide them under a box in scrubland while fishing from a jetty at Newport. He confessed to concealing 16 snapper, taking more than the daily bag limit, and knowing the fish were undersize. Snapper have minimum size of 28 centimetres and a bag limit of 10 fish per day, of which no more than three can be 40 centimetres or more.

Art inspired by Kahlo The colourful life of renowned Mexican modernist and surrealist Frida Kahlo will be celebrated in an exhibition opening in Maidstone next weekend. Showcasing the work of more than 50 local artists, the exhibition at artist-run co-operative MREAM ArtSpace will feature artistic responses to Frida Kahlo’s work and life. Inspired by her country’s popular culture, Kahlo has become best known for her striking portraits and self-portraits. Her paintings often featured strong elements of her own life and story, mixing realism with fantasy. Theft charges A Braybrook man has been remanded in custody after being charged with multiple counts of theft and deceptions. Pokies plan knocked back By Benjamin Millar Plans to install 50 new poker machines at The Victoria Hotel in Yarraville have been knocked back on the grounds of the “devastation” wrought by problem gambling on the Maribyrnong community. The hotel’s operators had applied for permission to install 50 electronic gaming machines at the Hyde Street hotel despite Maribyrnong already being at its maximum permitted cap of 471 machines. The proposal attracted 22 objections from nearby residents, citing concerns with the potential for increase in antisocial behavior, excessive trading hours and opposition to gaming in the area and generally. Council staff recommended the application be approved subject to conditions, but councillors unanimously voted the proposal down at last week’s city development meeting. Residents who addressed the meeting pointed to problems associated with the venue when it had 35 pokies on the premises before they were removed in 2014, including fighting and an armed robbery. Councillor Mia McGregor moved a notice of refusal on the grounds of adverse social and economic impacts, the hotel’s location on a main road and proximity to Yarraville’s commercial area, the fact it was speculative, and because it would not result in a net community benefit. She said the most recent data showed “an alarming increase” in gaming machine losses in Maribyrnong. Cr Simon Crawford said the location may be less harmful than other areas in Maribyrnong, but if the council is serious about reducing the number of gaming machines overall it has to refuse the application.
Pieces fall into place It is our scars that make us beautiful, says Newport’s Robert Hague, whose broken plate artwork has won the $40,000 Montalto Sculpture Prize. His work, The Golden Fleece, won the acquisitive prize and will join the permanent collection at Montalto. “This work was a folly of good humour, a 10-foot broken dinner plate,” Hague said. “I love the absurdity of it but more, the chance to reflect on our failure to embrace the inevitable failings and decline that besets us. We need to give ourselves a second chance.” His Montalto sculpture references the 1894 painting by Australian artist Tom Roberts and Albert Namatjira’s Ghost Gum (1945). “Namatjira was Australia’s first Aboriginal art star and at one point was estimated to have supported over 600 people with his painting, yet he died broken after being jailed and was largely unloved by the art establishment,” Hague said. “In 2013, two majestic ghost gums that were iconic images in Namatjira’s paintings, were burnt to the ground in suspicious circumstances, just weeks before they were due to be placed on the heritage register.” Hague’s print work is on exhibition at the International Print Center in New York until the end of March. Tree gets Trust listing

By Goya Dmytryshchak A century-old tree in Altona has received National Trust heritage listing – and its “champion� is urging people to nominate other trees. The Moreton Bay fig at Logan Reserve, near the corner of Pier and Queen streets, was nominated for classification on the Register of Significant Trees by Cr Sandra Wilson as part of her mayoral program in 2017. The National Trust has recognised the tree, which is about 14 metres high with a 28-metre canopy, as significant at regional level. “This Moreton Bay fig is significant for its location next to Altona Homestead (1851), the oldest standing building in Altona, at Logan Reserve,� according to the statement of significance. “The tree was likely planted in 1917, when significant landscape works were undertaken in Logan Reserve. “The specimen has a particularly large canopy spread of 28 metres, and makes a significant contribution to the landscape of the neighbourhood and park.� Cr Wilson said the council was thrilled the National Trust agreed the tree was an important part of the community’s cultural heritage and should be preserved for the education and appreciation of future generations. “There are many more that deserve recognition, celebration and protection,� she said. “While the nomination of the Moreton Bay fig was part of my 2017 mayoral program, anyone in the community can nominate a tree – it’s very quick and easy. “I would encourage anyone in our community that knows of a particular tree that is worthy of recognition to nominate it for the
Hobsons Bay council is conducting its annual community survey for six weeks until April 14, with residents and households randomly chosen to participate. The survey will ask people for their opinions on how well the council is delivering services and meeting community expectations, and about what they see as the main issues facing the community. Last year’s survey found the community was mostly satisfied with the council’s overall performance, according to the council’s Annual Community Survey Report. However, only about a quarter of the community (28 per cent) was “very satisfied� with the council’s financial management – that is how appropriately the council invests in the municipality, how wisely it spends and avoids waste, and its transparency around spending. There was a decrease in satisfaction with the perception that community members received good value for the money they spent on rates and other fees, the council’s report found. The community survey, which will take about 20 minutes to complete, will be conducted by market research consultancy, Key Research. Festival sails into our hearts By Goya Dmytryshchak Tens of thousands of people poured into Hobsons Bay over the past week for the inaugural Williamstown Seaport Festival. Rarely seen together, tall ships James Craig, Enterprize and Young Endeavour formed a procession to enter Williamstown in full sail on Thursday to open the festival. The James Craig, built in 1874, is one of four remaining working 19th century sailing ships in the world and the only one in the Southern Hemisphere. Restoration of the three-masted barque, owned by the Sydney Heritage Fleet, cost nearly $30 million and took almost 40 years to complete. Some of the crew boarded Sea Shepherd’s decommissioned flagship vessel, the Steve Irwin, now permanently moored at Williamstown. Williamstown Chamber of Commerce vice president and festival event manager Craig Turton said there would be opportunities for people to tour and sail on the ships throughout the week. “The ships are here for another three or four days,” he said. “The James Craig goes around and comes back again so there’s still an opportunity for the public to board the ships.” Mr Turton said he hoped the hugely successful event would become a regular fixture. “Our plan is for this to become a regular event and to grow,” he said. “There’s discussion about the old Williamstown Festival that used to be about and a lot of people are sad that went. “So, the idea is to grow this so it becomes bigger and takes in more of Williamstown as well.”

Cycling’s bold new future By Benjamin Millar Australia’s infrastructure advisory body has backed a proposal to create “cycling superhighways” connecting Melbourne’s CBD to surrounding suburbs including Footscray, Williamstown and Sunshine. Infrastructure Australia has placed the RACV proposal on its 2020 priorities list, released last week, arguing the links should be built within the next five years to help cut congestion and encourage more people onto bikes. RACV’s proposal features 17 suggested
routes between “major activity centres” and the city, including two routes to Footscray – one continuing on to Williamstown and the other to Sunshine. The plan separates cyclists from motorists on dedicated lanes or roads connecting with the CBD. It was one of only two new projects in Victoria endorsed as a priority initiative in IA’s infrastructure priority list. RACV senior planner Stuart Outhred said the organisation is now calling on all levels of government to work together to build the cycling infrastructure. “These priority corridors deserve more
than just paint – we want to see high-quality, separate infrastructure that makes everyone feel safe and comfortable when riding,” he said. “Investing in these corridors will deliver immense benefits for commuters wanting safer, cheaper and healthier ways of getting around, as well as the added benefits of reducing congestion on roads and pressure on public transport.” Advocacy group We Ride Australia welcomed the inclusion, after calling on Infrastructure Australia to pay more attention to bicycle infrastructure. Spokesman Stephen Hodge said Infrastructure Australia has
recognised that safe, separated and connected bicycle infrastructure is vital for effective and efficient transport as cities continue to grow. “With around 50 per cent of all trips in Australian cities less than five kilometres, we believe investment in walking, cycling and public transport has the potential to be a game changer for the choice to use a bike, or bus or feet for the short trips in our cities,” he said. “With 77 per cent of the increase in population over the next 15 years projected to occur in our fast-growing major cities we have to invest to get these bicycle networks off the drawing boards and onto the ground.”

An idea that emerged in Amsterdam has now reached Hobsons Bay. A repair cafe is being established at Altona’s Louis Joel Arts and Community Centre, where volunteers will help visitors fi x broken goods. The initiative is part of a global movement and is funded under the federal government’s communities environment program to save items from going to landfill. The free meeting place will be stocked with tools and materials to make repairs on a variety of items such as electrical items, clothes, bikes, toys, furniture and crockery. The centre’s Danielle Whelan said Repair Cafe Hobsons Bay would be launched in June and volunteers with skills in repairing and mending were being sought. “We are planning six, monthly repair cafes to be based here,” she said. “There’s a lot of things that we throw away

Stony Creek future mapped By Benjamin Millar Better stormwater treatment, increasing native trees and connecting the length of the corridor are the top priorities for Stony Creek outlined in a new 10-year plan. Maribyrnong council’s Stony Creek Future Directions Plan, which would cost $19 million to fully implement, is based on community feedback collected since the Tottenham warehouse blaze in August 2018. Consultation on a draft plan was carried out in November and December, with about 80 people attending information sessions
and almost 200 people completing online surveys. The Cruickshank Park and Hyde Street Reserve precincts attracted the highest level of community feedback, helping to prioritise actions and a 10-year schedule. A council report presented to last week’s city development meeting noted the strongest support was for environmental improvements such as stormwater treatment, increased native tree and creek-bank planting, and continuous public access and trail connectivity. “The linear open space along Stony Creek forms an important natural environment,
Healing through art Artists have fired up their creativity for a new exhibition in Footscray inspired by the summer’s catastrophic bushfires. Where There’s Smoke, which opened last week at Trocadero Art Space, features works by Rubii Red, Charlotte Allingham, Sofii Belling, Savanna Kruger and Kim Kruger. Artist and curator Savanna Kruger said the bushfires that blazed across the nation over summer should be a wake-up call for everyone. “It has been a very frustrating thing, with Aboriginal knowledge not being able to care for country,” she said. “We are mourning the loss not only for home and sacred culture sites, it’s also mourning just generally our loss of ability to care for country, seeing stuff that’s happening and knowing how it can be helped.” Kruger said she had found the scale and
impact of the devastation difficult to process, until she began to approach it from the perspective of a creative response. “So it became a natural response to have an exhibit about it and dive headfirst into it and to express what we’re feeling through art,” she said. “I like that it expresses the staunchness of our mob – that whatever comes our way we will still be resilient and strong enough to fight.” While the devastation wrought by the bushfires on the landscape has been confronting, Kruger also wanted to explore the way fire can be a force for good, cleansing and regeneration. The exhibition will remain on show until March 14 at Trocadero Arts Space, Level 1/119 Hopkins Street, Footscray.

Case worker wins anxiety claim By Goya Dmytryshchak A former department of human services case manager who slept with a cricket bat and pair of scissors because she feared a client, was rendered unable to work due to anxiety, a tribunal has found. The woman, who worked at Sunshine and sought medical help at Altona Meadows, is known only as XKGN.
Last month, she won a case at the Administrative Appeals Tribunal of Australia, which found she suffered permanent work injury resulting from the merger of several government agencies including Centrelink and Medicare, and a difficult or long-term case. She gave evidence that from about 2011, her workload and that of her team seemed to increase, partly from the merging of several government agencies including Centrelink
and Medicare into the former department of human services, now called Services Australia. The increase in workload coincided with a difficult case and the woman became increasingly worried about the reaction of a person whose case she was managing, causing her to take weapons to bed for protection. The tribunal found that from June 23, 2017 to the present date, the woman was incapacitated for work as a result of the injury identified as
“adjustment reaction with anxious mood�. It found that the woman “suffers a permanent impairment as a result of the injury which arose out of or in the course of her employment with DHS, or to which that employment contributed to a significant degree�. Comcare, a federal government statutory authority, was ordered to pay medical and treatment costs, proceedings costs and weekly compensation in respect of incapacity for work.
Running for a cause An Altona woman is running seven marathons in seven days to raise money for Bravehearts and help prevent children being exposed to family violence and sexual assault. Mother of three Mel Searle, who is assistant principal at Movelle Primary School in Kings Park, said she was passionate about children’s safety. She is a lead facilitator in Brimbank and Melton for the Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships program, which emerged from the Royal Commission into Family Violence. Ms Searle has so far raised more than $10,000 towards her $15,000 target for Australia’s leading child protection organisation. Next month, she is holding a fundraising event at Williamstown’s Pirates Tavern, ahead of taking on Bravehearts 777 Marathon – seven marathons in seven states in seven days. “I’m deeply passionate in making sure that every child is safe,� Ms Searle said. “That means from family violence, sexual assault and cyber safety. “I knew that this is something I need to do.
I thought, this is a way I can make a difference and raise awareness. “We know that one in five children are sexually abused and a lot of that is not reported. “I can hopefully keep our children safe and make Australia one of the safest places in the world to bring up our children.� Her marathon journey starts in Perth on June 29 and ends on the Gold Coast on July 5. The fundraiser at Williamstown’s Pirates Tavern is Saturday, April 18, from 7-11pm. There will be finger food and live entertainment for $30 plus booking fee. Barkly Village’s pop up park plan By Benjamin Millar A pop-up park that has been in the pipeline for years could finally see the light of day in West Footscray. The park on Clarke Street is one of the ideas included in the draft ‘Barkly Village Public Realm Plan’ released last week, cited as a way to create additional public open space within Barkly Village. The plan also details new protected bicycle lanes along Barkly Street between Summerhill Road and Leander Street. The plans were shaped with input from stakeholders including West Footscray

A council report to last week’s city development meeting noted that feedback highlighted the need for safer places to walk and cycle, more green spaces, and improvements to the overall village character. The report noted that Barkly Street carries about 16,000 vehicle movements per day, with traffic impacting on pedestrian and cyclist safety. Measures include increased footpath areas, raised crossings for pedestrian priority, planting 40 new street trees and cutting speed limits to 30km/h. “Key themes include improved amenity for pedestrians with wider footpaths and
pedestrian crossings, lowering the speed limit and reduced through traffic and creating a more inclusive centre where a wider range of citizens will feel comfortable accessing the centre by foot or bicycle,” the report stated. The streetscape improvements, which would cost about $450,000, are expected to be included in the council’s 2020-21 budget. The pop up park in Clarke Street, estimated to cost about $150,000, is being considered as part of the 2021-22 budget. The draft Barkly Village Public Realm Plan will now go to public consultation and a further report will be prepared with the feedback.
Sixty years of love Altona couple Norma and James “Darrel” Munn will celebrate their 60th anniversary on March 12. The pair met in the small country town of Trentham when Mr Munn was sent there as a relieving bank teller. “I worked all over Victoria,” he said. “I worked at about 54 branches in Victoria. “Little Miss was in Trentham and she worked right over the road [at] a clothing and material shop. “She came into the bank and the rest is history.” Their first date was at a log-cabin restaurant at Macedon. “I remember we had strawberries,” Mrs Munn said. Mr Munn interjected: “I did, and you knocked them off.” Their romance could have been cut short when the bank sent Mr Munn to Maffra, about
four hours away. “When I got there, there was a letter waiting for me,” Mr Munn said. “So, I came back to Trentham to see her. There was something special about her.” Fifteen months later, the pair married and moved to Altona in 1960. Mr Munn said “a lot of humour” was the key to a long marriage. “We have our barneys, of course we do,” he said. “But we make each other laugh plenty of times. “We have close families, and then we had children come along – we love our children. “I don’t think there’s any secret to it.” Mrs Munn adds: “It’s just something that comes naturally. Police warn online sellers Police have warned residents of a “notable increase” in thefts and assaults linked to online and social media marketplaces. Senior Sergeant Aaron Riches said police in Wyndham, Hobsons Bay and Maribyrnong have seen an increase in people posing as potential buyers of items which are advertised on buy, swap and sell sites. He said the offenders – who were often males using fake names – asked the sellers to meet in places such as parks, residential addresses and secluded locations during the afternoon or evening, then stole the item being offered for sale. Senior Sergeant Riches said the thefts sometimes resulted in the victim being assaulted, usually being pushed or punched. He said there had been reports of incidents in suburbs including Williams Landing, Tarneit, Braybrook, Altona North, Manor Lakes and Point Cook. Since the start of the year, there had been “a significant ramp-up” in the incidents, he said. “It’s always a concern for us and we’ve thrown significant police resources at it,” Senior Sergeant Riches said. He said police advised anyone selling items online to use a platform such as eBay, which offers built-in protections for buyers and sellers. He said it was also safer for sellers to mail items to buyers, rather than meeting them face-to-face.
Liam and Thomas are all heart, which is more than can be said for those who dumped the then one-week old kittens in a Brimbank dumpster. Weighing just 150 grams – the size of a small banana – the brothers were in bad shape when they were discovered. They’ve spent the past 70 days at the Lost Dog’s Home North Melbourne shelter recovering. Having beaten the odds, the outgoing, playful and very affectionate kittens are ready to find a new home. Unfortunately, they’re not alone. Spokeswoman for the Lost Dog’s Home Suzana Talevski said the home dealt with a lot of dumpled animals. She said people often had to give up their pets for a range of reasons, including relationship breakdown, moving house and rental arrangements. “We urge members of the public to please not dump animals,” Ms Talevski said. “If you find a stray animal have a heart and, please take it to your local council, vet or animal welfare organisation. “There’s never an excuse to dump animals in such a cruel manner.” Kittens Liam and Thomas were cared for by the home’s foster team, during work hours and at home. What are some of the changes you’ve seen? To start off with, the [West Gate] bridge wasn’t there, of course. There was just a narrow road – Melbourne Road or Williamstown Road was just a narrow two-car [road]. There was no lights from Hudsons Road to Francis Street. Can you tell me what you remember on the day the West Gate Bridge collapsed, October 15, 1970? I was up the bowling club, which is just up the street here, and my son came in and said, ‘The bridge just fell down’. I said, ‘Jim, don’t joke about things like that’. We hadn’t heard it and we were just up the street there. I think we just all raced out but couldn’t see anything from the club. As soon as my husband got home, we got all the news. What are some of the changes you don’t like? The traffic. I used to be able to wander across the road to post a letter but now I wouldn’t go past the front gate. At four o’clock in the afternoon it’s all bumper-to-bumper. I used to do a lot of ballroom dancing and where I lived used to get off the tram and I’d walk – this was in Brunswick – in the dark. I used to walk along there, never had a worry. Now, I’d think twice about it. What are you amazed by? The phones. Mr Google. Just amazing. You don’t need no street directory or dictionary or anything like that. It just amazes me. Technology’s just wonderful. We were the first in the street to get the TV, so all my aunts and uncles came and we set up in the lounge. We got rows of chairs and were sitting there through the commercials just staring. I remember one of the first commercials was, TV, Take Vincent’s – Vincent’s was a headache powder. What do you think of movies and music today?

We moved in here in 1950. It took 18 months to build. It was just after the war. How we came to build here: we lived in Brunswick and my husband used to work at the dockyards. It was a war service area – this side of the street.

SAUCE 1 tbsp instant coffee 300ml boiling water 3/4 cup brown sugar 2 tbsps Dutch cocoa METHOD Preheat oven on CircoTherm to 180°C and lightly grease 6 x 200ml individual ramekins. Sift flour, cocoa and caster sugar into a mixing bowl. Whisk melted butter, egg, vanilla essence and buttermilk together. Make a well in the centre of the flour then whisk in buttermilk mixture, mixing until smooth. Fold in chopped chocolate. Divide mixture evenly between ramekins. SPORT Bulldogs close in on top two spot A top two berth is within arm’s reach for Footscray in the Victorian Premier Cricket. The Bulldogs require only a further three Carlton wickets to lock up an all-important top-two spot, a home final and finals double chance. While his Bulldogs side appears to be in the box seat, captain Dylan Kight is not counting his chickens before they hatch. After setting a modest 161, Footscray has Carlton in all sorts of trouble on 7-93. But Kight has played at Princes Park enough times to know that runs can come quickly at the venue. “The first hour on Saturday is probably going to determine the game,” he said. “Runs can happen pretty fast on that ground and the two blokes in at the moment are pretty
experienced players and both have made runs in their time. “We aren’t expecting it to be anything but tough on the weekend.” Seventeen wickets fell on what Kight described as a “strange” day one. There were plenty of starts for batsmen of both teams, but no big individual scores. Siddhesh Dixit’s 36 late in the Footscray innings could prove the difference in the game. “It was one of those wickets where you never felt like you were really in,” Kight said. “The scorecard reads true to that with a lot of our guys getting some small starts and not able to push on. “Sid was very good for us though.” The chance to bowl 32 overs late in the day was handy for Footscray, reaping seven crucial
wickets. Jordan Buckingham was the star for the Bulldogs with 3-35 off 13 overs. Dubbed “one of the hardest trainers at the club” by Kight, Buckingham’s hard work is paying off with a breakout season. “He’s still growing and getting stronger, getting better and faster. “He’s been in some good contests with some of the best batsmen in Premier Cricket and also some first class cricketers and come out on top. “He’s found his feet, definitely.” Lance Jenkinson

Wolves hungry to atone With it so tight at the top of the ladder for most of the season, it only took Williamstown Wolves to be “a little bit off ” their best form in recent weeks to cough up first place and automatic promotion in the Baseball Victoria summer league division 2. The Wolves knew once they relinquished top spot with two rounds to go, they were not going to get it back, with Werribee Giants odds-on to sweep a three-game series against bottom of the ladder Bonbeach, which they did and went on to lock up prime position. While the Wolves were understandably disappointed to miss out on automatic promotion, they will not have to wait long to get their redemption with finals around the corner, a premiership up for grabs and a second chance at promotion. And, Williamstown has powered back up to top form in the past two games, rounding
out the season with two wins over strong opposition in the Malvern Braves. “We’re going into the finals with a lot of confidence,” Wolves outfield Daniel Chircop said. “Winning the last series of the season has really boosted our confidence playing against a lot of Melbourne Aces players now that the ABL has finished up. “Beating them at full strength has really boosted our spirits.” Williamstown had a nail-biting 5-4 win over Malvern to clinch a 2-1 series win. Wolves starting pitcher Dennis Neal paved the way to victory. “He threw a fantastic game,” Chircop said. Williamstown will square off with Moorabbin in a three-game semi-final series starting on Thursday night in Mulgrave.

Yarraville has made a statement on the eve of the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association finals with a commanding nine-wicket win over Melton at Yarraville Oval on Saturday. The Eagles’ desire to finish as high up in the finals as possible out-weighed that of Melton’s want to reach the top six. The reward for the Eagles was a second-place finish, while Melton was eliminated. “Melton had a lot to play for, but so did we,” Eagles playing coach Matthew Grose said. “We knew what was at stake for us. For us to get a home final, we needed to put a good team performance together and get a win.” There were times when Melton looked to be getting off the leash with the bat, but a constant stream of wickets saw them bowled out for 191. The chief destroyer for Yarraville was spinner Arjun Sehrawat, who took 4-38 off seven overs, including the key wicket of Nathan Taylor for 68. It was a busy week for Sehrawat, who played well for the Victorian under 15s at the national championships in mid-week. “We’re super pleased with his development this year,” Grose said. “What’s made Arjun successful this year is batsmen have tried to go after him and it’s played into our hands because he’s an aggressive spinner.” Josh Turner (2-32) and Ashan De Silva (2-41) were the other multiple wicket takers for Yarraville. The Yarraville run chase could not have gone smoother. The Eagles only lost one wicket in the innings and comfortably passed the target with four overs to spare.

Salvado than partnered with Josh Hahnel to get Yarraville home in an impressive fashion. “It was a really mature performance from Aidan Salvado and Josh Hahnel to be there when the winning runs were hit today,” Grose said. “It shows how much responsibility and pride they took on their performance today.” Having lost just once since mid-November, Yarraville should be considered one of the favourites for the premiership. The front runner in the chase for the flag is Williamstown, having won three finals-like wins to claim top spot in the finals. The Seagulls beat Werribee by five wickets in the final round at Williamstown Cricket Ground on Saturday with Brent McMinn the key to a successful run chase with 53. Altona has looked shaky in recent times and settled in third spot. The A’s two-wicket loss to Taylors Lakes at JK Grant Reserve on Saturday was its third straight home loss.

By Lance Jenkinson A Max Burgess-inspired Western United broke out of its goal scoring slump in a rampaging 6-2 win over Central Coast Mariners in the A-League at GMHBA Stadium in Geelong on Sunday. Burgess played a stunning role on an extraordinary afternoon for United, which ended a three-game goal-less streak with a six-pack for the goal-thirsty supporters. The story of the day was Burgess, who not only scored for the first time in his 45-game A-League career, but finished the game with a hat-trick. Even more remarkable, Burgess’ triple treat of goals all came in the first half, within 18 minutes of each other. Burgess broke his career goal drought in the 25th minute through sheer persistence. A nice ball from Alessandro Diamanti was cut off by Mariners defender Kim Eun-sun, but the clearance only trickled to Burgess, who unleashed a low and hard ball from outside the box into the bottom corner. After waiting just under 4000 minutes for his first A-League goal, Burgess only had to wait five more minutes for his second. The 25-year-old powered home from an acute angle on the back of some nice distribution from winger Connor Pain. Burgess completed his hat-trick two minutes before the break, pouncing for a tap in after striker Besart Berisha’s shot hit the woodwork. A keen follower of the A-League growing up, a hat-trick was dream come true for attacking midfielder Burgess. “It was a little bit surreal to be fair because I used to be one of those little kids in the stands, so it was probably a moment to cherish,” he said.
