Celebrating Australia Day Australia Day celebrations roar into life this Sunday with a series of events kicking off with the annual Australia Day Breakfast at Williamstown Town Hall. Now in its 20th year, the annual breakfast begins at 8am and is presented by the Lions Club of Altona in conjunction with Hobsons Bay Council. Entertainment will include live music, a talk by Australia Day Ambassador David Mann and a short address by Junior Australia Day Ambassador and Seabrook local Phoebe Hogarth about her experiences volunteering in Vanuatu. Hobsons Bay will welcome its newest Australians with a citizenship ceremony at the town hall from 10am. Maribyrnong Council will hold its own citizenship ceremonies at Footscray Town Hall from 10.30am and 11.30am, followed by a sausage sizzle and petting zoo with Australian mammals, reptiles and birds. Hobsons Bay Men’s Shed’s annual car show will be held at Altona’s Apex Park from 10am to 2.30pm, while Altona Sports Club will have an all-ages free outdoor concert from noon starring Aussie DC – The Australian AC/DC Show. President Martin Wurt said the agreement between the community and industry – former adversaries – had been a groundbreaking moment. “However, government has reneged on key details – they have blown it,” he said.
“These curfews were crucial to the cleaner freight zone and without them, plans to incentivise cleaner trucks will fail and in fact make the situation worse for thousands of residents. “Not only would the old trucks just use these two streets, having a detrimental impact on those residents, there would also be an increased risk of trucks crashing into the Napier Street Bridge. This is absolutely unacceptable.” VTA chief executive Peter Anderson expressed disappointment that the partnership would not be going ahead despite the significant time and resources that had been dedicated to it. The state government was contacted for comment.

An Australian-first partnership between inner-west residents, the freight industry and state government has been scuttled even before getting off the ground amid claims of broken promises and inaction. The ‘Smart Freight Partnership’ was announced with great fanfare last July as a breakthrough deal that would reduce travelling speeds on inner-west roads and reward the use of new, cleaner trucks. The result of 18 months of negotiation between Maribyrnong Truck Action Group (MTAG) and the Victorian Transport Association (VTA), the plan involved establishing an ‘Environmental
Freight Zone’ with two-tiered curfews that gave cleaner trucks improved access to five key freight routes through Footscray and Yarraville. The state government announced last July that it would begin implementing the changes, however it caused friction by leaving Williamstown Road and Buckley Street out of the announcement of new night-time curfews. Save Willy Rd president Dr Kate Lycett said at the time that the government had broken its promise and overlooked “the most important components of the initiative”. Williamstown Road residents have been campaigning for curfews and truck bans to deal with the massive spike in freight traffic once

Woolworths heads to the village By Benjamin Millar Australia’s supermarket duopoly is cementing its foothold in Melbourne’s inner west with the planned opening of a Woolworths Metro store in Yarraville. Woolworths will be opening its outlet in the Anderson Street site previously occupied by The Village Store, following a decision by the store’s owners to sell the business. Owner Daniel Anderson said running The Village Store had given him and his partner
Jackie “much pride and joy” over the past five years. The new Metro store is scheduled to open in April after an internal makeover. It follows the recent opening of a new Woolworths store at Millers Junction in Altona North and comes ahead of the planned construction of a new store in Newport. Woolworths Metro general manager Justin Nolan said the 350 square metre store will offer fresh food and health food sections and a cafe serving barista made coffee.
“The Village Grocer has been an integral part of the Yarraville community for the past six years so we have big shoes to fill,” he said. “Our aim is to create a food store that is locally relevant to the Yarraville community and we look forward to welcoming customers.” Mr Nolan said the store will offer a selection of products previously stocked at The Village Store and will continue using the same delivery group used by the store. Opening hours are still to be finalised, but are expected to be 6am until 11pm daily.

Community rallies to help Brian A familiar face on the streets of Williamstown, Big Issue vendor Brian, was sorely missed during a recent series of stints in hospital. For 15 years he has been selling The Big Issue magazine on and around Douglas Parade, becoming an integral part of the local community. That community swung into action when he went into hospital for some medical procedures, setting up a GoFundMe page to help raise enough money for Brian to purchase a mobility scooter to help get his life back on track. “I’ve been around Williamstown for about
the last 15 years and selling The Big Issue for about 22 years,” he said. “In my younger days I had a lot of different jobs but didn’t really stick at them, I spent a lot of time living on the streets and I came across The Big Issue in 1998. “I started selling The Big Issue and have stuck with it ever since.” “Most people down here are pretty friendly, stop and have a chat, I’ve even had people who have my number and ring me up and ask if there’s anything they can help out with.” This interaction was one of the things he
missed most during three trips to hospital over the last four months, undergoing two major operations during that time. But Brian was missed as well and his regulars did not remain idle. “It was actually a mate of mine who works in Liquorland, who I’ve known for quite a while – he put a thing on Facebook saying I was in hospital,” he said. “They got a GoFundMe page going because I couldn’t walk around, so to raise money to buy a scooter. “A lot of people I knew wanted to help me out.” Benjamin Millar
A western suburbs institution said goodbye last week. At 12pm on January 16, community radio station Stereo 974 Sunshine ceased transmission. Management at the station confirmed the closure to Star Weekly, but declined to make comment. It’s understood that escalating costs and a lack of funding support led to the closure. The station had been struggling to secure advertisers for a number of months. Management had been calling on the public to donate in order to keep the volunteer-run station on air. The closure ends a storied history for the station, which was one of the longest established community broadcasters in the state. The station was founded in 1978 and operated in North Sunshine for two decades. It had humble beginnings, initially broadcasting from a shipping container, but has been on air 24 hours a day, seven days a week since it began transmitting. In 1998 the station moved to its site in Geelong Road, Brooklyn, where it remained until its closure last week. While times have been tough for the community radio station, it still played a vital role for the community. In 2010 it was formally recognised as official emergency broadcaster for the region. The station also catered for the region’s diverse population with ethnic language programs making up a third of its broadcast time. Tate Papworth

A man has suffered serious head injuries after being attacked in his Kingsville home last Wednesday morning. Police are seeking a man who gained entry to a Chirnside Street residence about 6.30am and assaulted the male occupant with a weapon. A woman at the scene was also taken to hospital with injuries. The offender fled the scene on foot and remains at large. Police believe the parties are known to each other.

A West Footscray man remains in a critical condition following a serious assault in Southbank early Sunday morning. Vienna’s journey of discovery By Benjamin Millar
“I wanted to share my journey, so as a big fan of this pageant I thought I would join it and share my story and be more visible.� The discovery came as she was also pursuing her dream of becoming a registered nurse. Now working at Werribee Mercy Hospital, the experience has cemented her sense that transitioning was the right decision. “To me nursing is not a career, it’s way of life. It taught me more about life itself, the flow of life, how life starts and how life ends,� she said. “That pushed me into being true to myself, I knew life was short.� The 11th annual Miss Gay & Miss Trans Australia pageants will be held at Williamstown Town Hall on February 1. Vienna Salvo has always known who she was, but that person did not match the body in which she was born. Growing up in poverty in The Phillippines as a boy called Christian, Ms Salvo hid her true self and conformed to what was expected of an ordinary young boy. “Since I was three years old I always thought I was a girl, I was very feminine in my feelings and interests, the only thing different was my appearance,� she said. “In The Phillippines it was all about survival, people did not have the luxury to pursue dreams, you simply had to survive.� Ms Salvo moved to Australia and settled in Hoppers Crossing, but still struggled with her identity until coming across the Miss Trans Australia pageant. She said this marked the first moment she had found other people who had struggled through what she had been struggling through her whole life. “My family always told me to be manly, but then I discovered this pageant and this was something that was very new to me.� Ms Salvo entered the 2019 Miss Trans Australia pageant, held at Williamstown Hall, emerging as the winner. She credits her involvement with the pageant with finally giving her the confidence to fully be herself. “I began my transition just two years ago; it was my way to show myself that I want to be my best version of myself, who I always wanted to be since I was young,� she said.

Cash back for power customers By Benjamin Millar Hobsons Bay residents can earn money by cutting their energy use this summer, under a new reward program from electricity distributors CitiPower and Powercor. The Energy Partners program pays households $20 when they reduce their electricity usage for up to three hours on a handful of the hottest days. Energy use across the network tends to skyrocket on hot summer days, placing
pressure on local power infrastructure to cope with the demand. By reducing energy demand in localised areas during extreme temperatures, reliability improves and network upgrades to accommodate just a handful of days can be deferred. Eligible customers taking part in the program will have a smart device installed in their air conditioner. On selected peak demand days, CitiPower and Powercor temporarily adjust their
temperatures for up to three hours. Participants will receive $20 each time this occurs. The program rolled out on the Bellarine Peninsula last year, where 1067 participants were paid more than $50,000 for taking part. Participants helped save 474kW on one day alone, enough electricity to power more than 200 homes. Hobsons Bay is one of a handful of new locations selected to run the program. CitiPower and Powercor’s community
partnerships manager Ruchika Deora said the Energy Partner program helped to ensure reliable electricity for all customers. Sheena Walters, who took place in last year’s program, said it is very straightforward to sign up and be involved. “If we were at home during an event, we could pre-cool the house remotely using the device, as we were always given plenty of notice that events were taking place,” she said. The council’s Celebrate Summer program is underway, featuring a series of free and family-friendly events sprinkled along the coast. Hobsons Bay Men’s Shed president Ken Inglis is looking forward to sharing his love of classic cars with the world at the shed’s annual car show this Australia Day. He speaks with Benjamin Millar. What’s your connection with the western suburbs? I was born and raised in West Footscray actually; I live in Hoppers Crossing now but spend a lot of time at the Hobsons Bay Men’s Shed here in Queen Street in Altona. What kept you living in the west? I like it here and it was easy getting into the city. There is plenty of public transport and whatnot, most of my jobs have always been in the west. What can you tell us about the Hobsons Bay Men’s Shed? This Men’s Shed is about nine years old. It started off as Altona and Williamstown separately, they combined and they got this property in Queen Street. I’ve been president the last six years. We do a lot of variety of work, woodwork, metal work, we’ve got a car club, computers, we’ve got a music group that is going to play on the day of the car show. At the moment we’ve got 370 members, which is unbelievable, most of them come from around this area. Can you tell us about your love of classic cars? I like the older cars rather than the current models. It stated off as a hobby many years ago, I went into as a job for a while. I bought a 1949 Chevy Styleline and slowly restored it. I’ve got two cars now, an FC Holden as well. I was one of the originals that started up the motoring group in the Men’s Shed.

Millions owed in unpaid super By Benjamin Millar Inner-west workers are being shortchanged tens of millions of dollars each year in unpaid super, prompting calls for a major overhaul to the way the entitlement is paid. New analysis of Australian Tax Office (ATO) data shows workers are being robbed of more than $1.4 billion in unpaid superannuation a year, with residents in the Altona electorate among the hardest hit. Industry Super Australia found more than 800,000 Victorians have not received their legal super entitlement – almost a third of all workers.

This included an estimated 12,850 Altona workers missing out on more than $24 million in super entitlements, 10,160 Williamstown workers almost $23 million and 11,705 Footscray workers more than $18 million. Industry Super Australia deputy chief
executive Matt Linden said an outdated law only requires super to be paid quarterly and not in line with pay cycles, meaning it is easy for payments to fall through the cracks. He warned the only way to put this $1.4 billion “super rip off ” to an end is for the federal government to force super to be payable on payday. “Across the state almost a third of Victorian workers are having their super stolen, no area is immune,” he said. “Unpaid super blasts a hole in workers’ savings, making a huge difference to their quality of life in retirement.” Mr Linden said with such little enforcement
action taken against those responsible for the unpaid super scandal, both the federal and state government must act. “The Victorian government can add its voice to fix this problem once and for all,” he said. Mr Linden welcomed the state government’s push to create laws that criminally punish those who don’t pay wages, superannuation and other entitlements. He said while the majority of employers do the right thing and pay the full entitlement, some exploit legal loopholes and lax enforcement to short-change workers. “Some dodgy bosses don’t pay super at all, despite what it says on payslips,” he said.

Industrial strife is threatening work on the West Gate Tunnel, as the state government demands toll road company Transurban find alternative employment for more than 150 tunnelling workers the company laid off last week. But Transurban has vowed the $6.7 billion West Gate Tunnel will be finished on deadline by 2022 even as it scrambles to deal with contaminated soil dug up to build the project. The Australian Workers Union confirmed the workers were given two weeks’ notice last Monday morning. Transport Infrastructure Minister Jacinta Allan slammed the decision, describing it as “incredibly disappointing”. “We expect that Transurban and its builder will make every effort to keep these workers on the West Gate Tunnel Project or redeploy them to one of the many other projects that CPB and John Holland are currently working on,” she said. The Jon Deeble-managed Aces hold the equal second-best record in the league along with the Perth Heat, but those two sides will duke it out in a four-game series at Perth’s Harley-Davidson Ballpark starting on Thursday night to determine which one goes straight through to the semi finals and which one is wildcard bound. Melbourne Aces will take strong form into the series in Perth, having got the better of an Adelaide team with the best record in the league. In the series opener on Thursday night, the Aces created separation with a three-run seventh innings en route to a 5-2 win. Middle relief pitcher Scott Mitchinson picked up the win for the Aces. Shane Robinson and Jared Cruz had two-hit games for the Aces. In game two on Friday night, Melbourne Aces led all the way for a 7-5 win. The consistent Aces scored runs in six innings. Starting pitcher Darin Downs claimed the win for the Aces. In game three on Saturday, Melbourne Aces went down for the first time in series, losing 8-6. The Aces had a never-say-die attitude, putting up four runs in an entertaining ninth inning, but the deficit was too great to bridge. The final game of the series on Sunday was also a special one for the Melbourne Aces. The Aces held their BlazeAid game to raise money for victims of the devastating bushfires. Altona had it all its own way on the opening day of its local derby with Williamstown in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association east-west at the Williamstown Cricket Ground on Saturday. The A’s silenced the home fans with a dominant bowling display that saw a shellshocked Seagulls lose a steady stream of wickets before falling for 140 in the 66th over. A’s captain Adam Yates said his bowlers were able to extract plenty out of the pitch to cause headaches for the Seagulls. “It was a good toss to lose in the end,� Yates said. “It [the pitch] provided our bowlers with some movement and [Shannon] Clarke and James Grubb started really well and got some early wickets. “We were able to get into their middle order pretty early and create some opportunities throughout the day. “We were always able to keep the pressure on them.� Williamstown was in all sorts of trouble at 4-29. Not until captain-coach Brent McMinn went to the crease did the Seagulls seem to have some control. McMinn was the only top order batsman to shine with 29 off 69 balls. The middle order offered some resistance for Williamstown. Brenton Hodges was top scorer for the Seagulls with 40, coming in after steadying hands from Matthew Twentyman (27) and James Cook (22). Each time the Gulls appeared to be building towards a meaningful partnership, Altona would strike with a wicket. Clarke was the pick of the Altona quicks with
