Food link for fire relief By Benjamin Millar Melbourne’s inner-west has been digging deep to help out their country counterparts facing devastating losses in the bushfire crisis crippling communities around Australia. Maribyrnong and Hobsons bay residents, businesses and community groups have swung in behind a range of bushfire relief measures, including the provision of urgent food and supplies. Yarraville-based Foodbank Victoria has been playing a crucial role in the emergency response to the unprecedented bushfire crisis, which has left at least 27 people dead, destroyed more than 2000 homes and burnt out more than 10 million hectares.

- Dave McNamara Tonnes of emergency food relief and water has been sent from the Yarraville warehouse to East Gippsland since January 1, when the first truck left for Bairnsdale with supplies to help firefighters and local communities caught up in the bushfires. With roads into the area still cut off, Foodbank Victoria also began shipping food relief to Mallacoota by sea on January 3. The first load included 650 hampers, pallets of water and muesli bars. Almost 1000 cars came through the warehouse to drop off crucial items on January 4, with six military trucks loading up 50 pallets of water and eight pallets of food hampers for East Gippsland. US pop star Lizzo joined the volunteers last Tuesday, making a surprise visit to lend a hand in the midst of her first Australian tour. “Thank you so much for volunteering your time and your energy and your hearts,” she told volunteers. Foodbank Victoria chief executive Dave McNamara said the community response has been enormous, with more than 400 volunteers helping sort and pack more than 4500 food hampers for bushfire affected communities. “You guys have been amazing, all those communities out there affected are incredibly grateful.” Foodbank is accepting donations to assist its efforts via https://www.foodbank.org.au/ relief efforts: pages 8-9

Happy New Year! It was a pleasure to ring in the New Year at Footscray Park with more than 20,000 people at our annual fireworks. Of course, during these celebrations the bushfires across the country were not far from our minds. We thank everyone who donated to the Red Cross at our New Year’s Eve celebrations. Since then, the State Government has set up the bushfire appeal at www.vic.gov.au/bushfireappeal

There are so many groups and organisations collecting and donating to those affected by the fires, the outpouring of community support in the City of Maribyrnong has been amazing. Our own officers were called to help Mallacoota evacuees on the weekend of the first week of January, when they arrived by HMAS Choules to Melbourne and had to be relocated. We also helped direct traffic around Foodbank Victoria, more than 2200 cars came through the Yarraville warehouse dropping off crucial items for bushfire affected communities in the first weekend of January. Thank you to all the volunteers that have been helping out at Foodbank! I’d also like to remind everyone not to forget our calendar of festival events and activities. Our Midsumma Festival runs from mid-January to February, there’s the ‘rocking’ St Jerome’s Laneway Festival in February and Yarraville Festival mid-February.

Trio weather VCE to record high scores A childhood dream of becoming a meteorologist spurred Daniil McIntyre to weather a tough VCE year on his way to becoming dux of Williamstown High School. Daniil received an ATAR of 99.90, virtually guaranteeing he could study any university degree of his choosing. Yet there is only one pathway he has his sights on – studying science at the University of Melbourne and becoming a meteorologist. “I think that the recent bushfire crisis is highlighting the weather and how important it is to understand,” he said. “If I can somehow contribute to helping out that will be great, so working at the Bureau of Meteorology is my hope, helping out behind the scenes.” Daniil’s interest in weather and the climate was first triggered by an episode of the animated TV series The Magic School Bus. “I watched as a kid, in one episode the teacher took the kids to a tornado in the US and they learnt about the composition of the weather and things like humidity and that really sparked an interest in me.” Graduating Year 12 twins Stephanie and Julian Smith-Gard, meanwhile, are looking forward to more time to pursue their creative sides. While Stephanie is also interested in studying science, she plans to keep up her involvement in musical theatre as a creative outlet. Julian plans to throw himself into the artform more seriously, seeing composition as a potential career pathway. For now both are immersed in the process of writing an original musical theatre production, to be performed by Williamstown High School students in July. “It’s a classic war story, set in the 40s and a few guys from England go to fight,” Julian said. “It’s about how naïve they are; it’s framed in more of a light-hearted way because I enjoy light-hearted musicals.” Stephanie said keeping up a creative pursuit helped deal with the stress of VCE. Man charged over double murder An Altona North man has been charged with two counts of murder over the deaths of a couple gunned down in front of a Yarraville home on New Year’s Eve. Lindita Musai, 25, and her husband Veton Musai, 29, were shot as they were about to enter the Salisbury Street home about 10.30am on December 31, just two days after celebrating their first wedding anniversary. Ms Musai died at the scene and her husband was taken to hospital with critical injuries, but died the next afternoon. The shooting suspect, 55-year-old Altona North man Osman Shaptafaj, was taken to The Alfred hospital in a critical but stable condition after alleging turning his gun on himself following the slaying. Mr Shaptafaj, Ms Musai’s estranged father, was charged last Thursday with two counts of murder. He remains in hospital under police guard. Lindita Musai, 25, and her husband Veton Musai, 29, had just returned from a short trip away celebrating their first wedding anniversary. Veton’s elder brother Drilon said the pair were a “fairytale couple”. “You hear people talk about other couples and how much love they have for one another but this was truly something else,” he told The Age. “They set the bar extremely high for everyone.” Mr Shaptafaj is due to appear in Melbourne Magistrates Court on May 14. Maribyrnong Aquatic Centre’s entry rules will be tightened following a backlash to a patron flaunting a Nazi tattoo. Footscray resident Tom Tanuki said he was visiting the popular centre last month when he came across the man, bearing a large swastika tattoo on his chest. When he raised his concerns with a pool lifeguard, Mr Tanuki was told the patron was “a regular”. Mr Tanuki told Star Weekly he escalated his complaint to a manager, but was told nothing

could be done as it would discriminate against the man’s right to use the centre. “He’s an open white supremacist, but we didn’t say they had to cut the tattoo off their chest, we asked could he not clothe up so as to not intimidate other patrons in there?” Mr Tanuki said by allowing the man to openly display the swastika on its premises the council was failing to meet its obligations to its large multicultural population. “They were talking to us about discrimination – well it’s a discriminatory symbol. It openly advocates for discrimination, genocide in fact. The council needed to be expressing some kind

A Braybrook man has been charged with 42 offences after being spotted by police riding a bicycle without a helmet in Altona North earlier this month. The 46-year-old was allegedly found to be in possession of heroin, methylamphetamine and almost $200 in coins. Police allege he was responsible for a series of thefts from motor vehicles in Altona, Newport, South Kingsville, Spotswood, Braybrook and Yarraville, using a rock to smash windows of vehicles parked on the street. He is due to appear in court at a later date charged with 42 offences including theft from a motor vehicle, possession of drugs and committing offences while on bail.

A Williamstown actor is preparing for the purrformance of a lifetime when he takes the stage for Andrew Lloyd Webberâ€™s musical Cats this week. Matthew Azzopardi will be playing Rumpus in the Young Australian Broadway Chorus production taking over the National Theatre on St Kilda from January 17 to 25. This new production, supported by a live orchestra, pays homage to the 1930s â€“ the era when T.S. Eliot wrote the original poems for his children that inspired Webberâ€™s smash-hit musical. The National Theatre will be transformed into a crumbling English Music Hall during the Great Depression, while the costumes have been inspired by the glamour of the roaring 20s and 30s.

Azzopardi said being a part of Cats has been a rewarding experience. â€œItâ€™s opened me up to working with such an amazing talented ensemble, as well as getting to work with just an amazing production team that have so much to offer each and every student,â€? he said. â€œIâ€™ve really enjoyed playing the Rumpus cat because itâ€™s given me the chance to be harnessed up and fly around stage.â€? Echo Taskforce detectives have charged nine people following a series of warrants linked to a shooting in Bulleen last August. A 36-year-old Altona Meadows man charged with trafficking and possessing a drug of dependence was bailed to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates Court on April 7. A 31-year-old Altona Meadows woman charged with cultivating a narcotic plant, possessing cannabis and possessing imitation firearm was bailed to appear at the Werribee Magistrates Court on March 12.

Centenary of service By Benjamin Millar Footscray RSL club will be celebrating its long and storied history this Saturday with a ceremony to mark 100 years since its foundation. Returned soldiers first established the club in January 1920, just over 12 months after the end of the ‘Great War’. While membership steadily grew over following decades, as veterans returned from conflicts in Korea, Vietnam and World War II, the numbers dropped to a parlous state just over a decade ago. With barely a handful of members remaining and the club in dire risk of folding entirely, a campaign began to recruit members from the Vietnamese community – veterans of the Vietnam War who moved to Australia in the wake of the conflict. One such member was Viet Long Nguyen, who now serves as the Footscray RSL president. “The Footscray RSL membership was going down until 2008, when the president encouraged Vietnam veterans to join,” he said. “Many Vietnamese had come to the area and the membership go up to 100.” Mr Nguyen said membership is now around 120, with many Vietnamese veterans still involved. The club will celebrate its 100th anniversary this Saturday, starting with a march from the Footscray Memorial Garden on the corner of Geelong and Ballarat Roads. A ceremony will then be held at the cenotaph in front of the RSL headquarters on Geelong Road. Mr Nguyen said all are welcome to attend the ceremony. Veterans of any conflict are also welcome to join weekly Wednesday morning catch-ups at the RSL.

New dress code for ceremonies A new dress code will be strictly enforced at Maribyrnong Council’s citizenship ceremony on Australia Day, following pressure on local councils from the Federal Government. Sportswear, singlets and rubber thongs are all banned, with attendees asked to wear “smart”, casual attire or traditional cultural dress. Attendees in breach of the ‘Citizenship Ceremony Dress Code’ will be asked to leave the venue. The council’s acting director of corporate services Frank Rog said all councils were last year directed by the Federal Government to prepare their own dress code. “This code was drafted to recognise the importance of the occasion to both our conferees and their guests,” he said. “Should people wish to attend the Australia Day Citizenship Ceremonies to deliberately disrupt proceedings, which is reflected in their manner of dress, they will be asked to leave the venue.” Mr Rog said conferees and their guests have traditionally respected past ceremonies, reflecting the significance of the occasion by being suitably attired. Hobsons Bay mayor Colleen Gates said the council does not currently have a dress code at its citizenship ceremonies, but will consider its merits during the year. About 80 people are expected to attend Maribyrnong Council’s Australia Day citizenship ceremonies, while about 120 candidates are expected in Hobsons Bay. Benjamin Millar

By Clay Lucas / The Age Almost 60 Yarraville residents and landowners who will have a tunnel dug beneath their properties for a new toll road are claiming $4 million compensation from the state government. They say having the West Gate Tunnel dug beneath their land will cause their property values to plummet – in some cases by up to $120,000. In 2018, the government for the first time used special compulsory underground purchase laws to take control of the land beneath the Yarraville homes. Bill Dumbleton, 88, is among 58 property owners who have signed up to a legal action being led by law firm Slater and Gordon. The tunnels will be dug under his two townhouses near the existing West Gate Freeway, and he is claiming compensation of $40,000 per property, saying the tunnel would reduce their resale value. “They are lovely little places. But if I had known a tunnel was going to go underneath, I wouldn’t have built there. “The soil in the area … moves a lot, and so there is always cracking.” The tunnels beneath homes range in depth from 10 metres below properties down to 27 metres. The “sub-stratum” land underneath a total of 260 properties – including more than 100 homes, mostly in Yarraville – was taken by the government last year. Letters to home owners said they could be entitled to compensation if they could show a financial loss, but the letters also said such a loss was unlikely. The alleged mastermind behind the illegal dumping of millions of litres of dangerous chemicals in the warehouse that erupted in the 2018 Tottenham fire is facing more than 50 charges over similar stockpiling at five other sites. Graham Leslie White, 58, has been charged with 55 offences under the Dangerous Goods Act, consisting of 11 offences for each of the four warehouses he occupied in Epping and one in Campbellfield. WorkSafe is alleging that White failed to take all reasonable precautions to prevent any fire or explosion of dangerous goods that were under his control, despite knowing this failure could endanger the safety or health of people, property or the environment. White is also accused of breaching a series of regulations and failing to notify WorkCover of the presence of an excess quantity of dangerous goods at each site. Music relief for fire pain By Benjamin Millar Watching his house burn down before his very eyes, John Gai couldn’t imagine how his life could get back on track. In Year 11 at the time, he woke in his Sunshine North home to the unmistakable smell of smoke. “I heard mum yelling get out of the house, at that time the whole kitchen and living room were all burning,” he said. “We had to leave everything, there was no way to save anything. I had to grab one of my siblings and take them outside, then we just had to watch our house burn down.” With no home and no possessions left but the clothes on their backs, the family were put up in a motel by an uncle. “The word got around the church we go to in Altona Meadows and they were very supportive,” Mr Gai said. People brought food, the next day they turned up and brought clothes as well. “The support was overwhelming, it really helped me, it was so great to know that somewhere out there, even a stranger was there at a time of need,” he said. “It pushed me to always want to be that person, to be a supportive person to help other people.” To this end, Gai – known to many for his rapping as King Jag – is turning his musical talents to helping raise funds for bushfire relief in a special fundraising event at The Substation in Newport this Friday night. He is one of the young people organising Bushfire Relief @ The Substation, a youth-led live music event from 6-7.30pm which will include acts by young local musicians and open mic performances. “I really feel for the people that were affected

West unites for fire funds Inner-west businesses and community groups have raised tens of thousands of dollars for bushfire relief, with plenty more fundraising on its way. The Western Bulldogs have kicked in $62,500 to the Australian Red Cross Disaster Relief and Recovery fund and promised more is in the pipeline. Footscray tattoo artist Jackson Booth has raised more than $7000 by auctioning off a chance to win a full day tattoo session. Pride of our Footscray community bar raised $5000 via an auction, donation jars and funds from the bar itself. Footscray’s Bar Josephine raised more than $6000 from donations and sales of donated beer and Altona bar Hopheads also raised money via donated sales. Over the weekend the Williamstown Bowling Club raised $1300 through a social bowls day on Saturday, the Footscray CWA raised almost $5300 selling more than 2000 scones and the Footscray Cycling Club donated all takings and prize money from Sunday’s racing. A host of other groups and businesses have been doing their bit and more efforts remain underway in coming days. Way Out West Roots Music Club is putting together a special benefit gig in Newport this Friday night in response to the ongoing bushfire crisis. Hoops fun for fire fund By Benjamin Millar With raging bushfires forcing Altona Meadows six-year-old Clarke Grech to evacuate from his holiday home in Marlo, he could be forgiven if his first thoughts were about his own disappointment. But Clarke’s mind was elsewhere, wondering how he might be able to help those communities most affected. He soon struck an idea involving one if his favourite pursuits – shooting hoops. He told his parents of his fundraising idea, they in turn contacted Altona Laverton Eagles president Guy McCleish, who swooped into action and called on his networks to make it a reality.

I just love how the whole community rallied around it. - Guy McCleish McCleish had his own brush with the bushfires while holidaying in Eden on the NSW South Coast, spending New Year’s Eve in an evacuation centre before returning home. Clarke, McCleish and a host of supporters gathered at Altona Sports Centre last Friday for a 12-hour session of shooting foul shots, raising $1 for every shot made. McCleish, who shot 2500 foul shots on the day, said the fundraiser ended up raising more than $12,000, which will go to the Country Fire Authority. He praised the community spirit shown on the day, with local sporting groups, businesses and residents all playing their part. McCleish said Altona Sports Centre donated the use of two courts for the event and local businesses donated goods for the barbecue and

other support. “It turned out to be an amazing day, Clarke did an awesome job and $12,700 was raised,” he said. “Our community was fantastic, supporters were fantastic, all from a four day turnaround.” McLeish said the day was supported by players from the NBL club Melbourne United

and NBL great Lanard Copeland. “I just love how the whole community rallied around it, the local sporting clubs who play at that centre, the actual sports centre donated the whole day for us, everyone played a part,” he said. “Clarke is a superstar coming up with this.”

When Kingsville four-year-old Willow Cameron saw footage of the bushfires that have been dominating television news reports, she asked her parents to explain what was happening. Her mother Lauren and father Dave told Willow that the bushfires have been wreaking havoc in large swathes of the country, meaning that people and animals were losing their homes. They explained that this meant many people had lost all of their belongings to the fires, including clothes and toys. “We’ve donated her toys before, so she asked what could she give,” Ms Cameron said. “So she and my husband decided that she could raise some money by selling some cupcakes and cookies on the Saturday morning.” The family baked up dozens of cupcakes and cookies, then put the call out via the local neighbourhood Facebook page. The sale raised $150, which was matched by Willow’s parents and grandparents, taking the total donation to $750. Benjamin Millar

Steam into 2020 with one of the west’s most innovative new creative spaces, The Creative Technology Hub at Seaworks Maritime Precinct in Williamstown. The new makerspace features cutting edge creative technology including a 3D printer, laser cutter, green screen and virtual reality, available for visitors and workshop participants to enjoy a taster of the tools that could lead to new educational and employment opportunities. Programs and activities at the hub focus on STEAM learning, with the aim of sparking interest in the vital fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics. The hub has been created via a partnership between Seaworks and Hobsons Bay council, drawing on a grant funded by Gandel Philanthropy, the state government’s Living Libraries Infrastructure Program Fund, and additional sponsorship. It is situated in the main shed at Seaworks with access off Nelson Place, further opening up the Williamstown maritime precinct for visitors. Mayor Colleen Gates said the new hub is a very welcome addition to Hobsons Bay. “Whether you are a younger person looking to enter the workforce or a more experienced worker seeking to reskill, the hub provides opportunities to learn new skills and ways of working which are required for the jobs of the future,” she said. “This project has been made possible through a unique partnership model

Foot Pain or Heel Pain?

Foot pain is extremely common, affecting more than 80% of people at some point in their lives, with heel pain being the most common of all human foot complaints. Despite their frequency, these conditions are often mismanaged and incorrectly treated, leaving many sufferers spending time and money on treatments without long-term solutions or relief. But why are such common problems seemingly so hard to treat effectively? Either only the symptoms are being addressed and not the underlying cause or the exact nature of the condition is not being identified or understood.” For example, most heel pain is incorrectly assumed to be an inflammatory condition but it is nearly always a result of nerve impingement or tissue degeneration. Tissue thickening is often mistaken for inflammation, contributing to incorrect diagnoses and treatment. MY PLACE A proud grandfather and keen Western Bulldogs supporter, West Footscray resident Kevin D’Elton has fond memories of his eight decades living in the west. He speaks with Benjamin Millar. What’s your connection with the inner-west? I was born December 1939 and lived in Byron Street, Footscray. I have lived in the west for over 80 years. What are your favourite memories of growing up in the area? Being able to walk anywhere. I went to Hyde Street State School, then Footscray Tech school. In 1955, I started work as an apprentice motor mechanic at Rhodes Motor Company. I worked there for 50 years on General Motors Holden products, like Holden, Chevrolet and Oldsmobile cars. We converted left hand drive cars to right hand cars, such as Cadillacs and Oldsmobiles. How did you like to spend your time? I joined the Footscray Harriers club at the Western Oval, where I met the love of my life, and so the story goes on to this day. I have now retired to a beautiful life with family and lots of friends. What has been the biggest local change you have seen over the years? The traffic in the area.

What do you like most about the living here? I like the ease of doing things like shopping and meeting friends, as well as the people. What are your favourite local places? Whitten Oval, and any of the many shopping centres in the area. What is something people may be surprised to learn about you? That I have nine grandchildren who I love very much.

UPDATE ON THE WEST GATE TUNNEL PROJECT The West Gate Tunnel Project is using the summer months on Melbourne’s roads to carry out important works to build extra lanes on the West Gate Freeway. Work is underway rebuilding two key ramps over the West Gate Freeway, to make room for widening the freeway from 8 to 12 through lanes. This work includes rebuilding ramps that go over the West Gate Freeway at the M80 Ring Road interchange and replacing the piers with a frame structure to allow space for the extra lanes underneath. In addition, entry and exit ramps will be upgraded at Millers Road, as well as placing more barriers so that we can continue the freeway widening works during 2020. Economic Boost The West Gate Tunnel Project is providing a massive boost to Victoria’s economy, creating thousands of jobs. The project is delivering a $10 billion boost to Victoria’s economy, with about 4000 people already on board and has recently clocked up 11 million working hours.

Detours are in place. During these works, which run to the end of February, you may experience delays on the M80 Ring Road, West Gate Freeway, and Princes Freeway.

All up the project will create 6000 jobs, including over 500 jobs for apprentices, trainees and graduates.

Meanwhile in Footscray, preparations are well underway for the construction of a bridge over the Maribyrnong River. This bridge will connect the West Gate Tunnel to an elevated road above Footscray Road, linking the West Gate Tunnel to the city and CityLink once the tunnel opens. When the tunnel is completed, drivers will have a choice - the tunnel or the bridge. Local residents will also beneﬁt from 9000 trucks a day removed from streets in the inner west, with 24-hour truck bans on six local roads. SPORT Team goals drive hockey’s rising star in 2020 Footscray hockey rising star Carly James left just enough to the imagination last season to enter 2020 with even bigger aspirations. The defender enjoyed huge growth in her own game at club, national and international levels, playing major roles for the various teams she represented. While all her teams reached the pointy end of their seasons, they all just fell short of the ultimate glory and that will spur on James this year. “It was a pretty awesome year, a pretty good ride,” James said. “It was pretty fun to be a part of HC Melbourne [in the new Hockey One competition], have a good year with Footscray and make the grand final and then have a few trips with the Australian development teams.” James finished 2019 on a high, representing Australia’s under 21s in a tri-nations series in December. The Jillaroos overcame a sluggish start to

finish the tournament in second place. After losing the opener 3-1 to New Zealand, the Jillaroos had a 1-1 draw with India and rounded out the series with a 3-1 win over India and 2-1 win over New Zealand. James was one of only two Victorians in the Jillaroos team, along with team captain Aisling Utri. “We were the only two Victorians so hopefully we did the Big V proud,” James said. “It was a good experience to really learn and keep improving. “To play against high intense quality teams, you don’t get the opportunity every day.” On the national front, James was a key part of HC Melbourne’s incredible first year in the Hockey One competition. All that stood between HC Melbourne and the inaugural title was a penalty shoot out loss to Brisbane Blaze in the grand final. While the final day loss was tough for James, she appreciated being part of the newly formed

HC Melbourne in a Hockey One competition that changed the way the sport is played and watched at the elite level in Australia. “It was massive to be a part of,” James said. “To be able to play in front of a home crowd, have it televised and to be able to promote our own brand, and show in hockey that men and women can play equal times and have week by week travel was great. “There were a couple of weeks where the Hockeyroos girls had to still qualify for Tokyo, so it was real fierce competition.” At club level, James experienced that so close yet so far feeling on grand final day as well, with Footscray going down to Hawthorn 4-0. Just reaching the season decider was a huge feat for the Bulldogs and James cannot wait to see how much her young team has gained from that experience. “It’s a super young group,” she said. “That’s the kind of thing that can lead to future success. Bulldogs captain Dylan Kight has just about ran out of superlatives to describe Russ, who he believes, along with teammate Travis Dean, could have been handy for a Big Bash League team like the winless Melbourne Renegades this summer, only to be overlooked again. “It’s the same old that we’ve come to expect from Dean [Russ],” Kight said. “He does what he always does. “They [the Renegades] could do a lot worse than have someone like Russy or Trav in their team, that’s for sure.” Footscray compiled 7-171 on the back of the Russ and Dean show. Dean was the first to put his foot on the pedal, making 38 off 58 balls, including four fours and a six. Once Dean went out, Russ took it upon himself to pick up the run rate. Russ carved out exactly a run-a-ball 67 to take the Bulldogs to a competitive score. “He’s made white ball batting look pretty easy the last few years,” Kight said. “He’s got his own formulas worked out and he just knows how to go about his innings. “A good example for youngsters like Matty Underwood and Dylan Brasher, who get to watch him every week.” Underwood (11), Kight (13), Hamish Winter-Irving (11) and Wright (14 not out) scrounged enough runs to ensure Footscray built a competitive total. Casey-South Melbourne started promisingly, reaching 45 for the loss of their first wicket. The Swans appeared on track for victory at 3-101, but crumbled to be all out for 153. Russ was instrumental in the Swans downfall, snaring 4-24 off 4.5 overs. “He just builds up pressure,” Kight said. “He gets through his overs nice and quick and he knows how to lock up every single batsman. “He’s got a plan and just sticks to it, keeps it simple.” Young Footscray quick Jonah Koch was the other thorn in the side of Casey-South Melbourne batsmen.

Footscray has moved up to fifth on the ladder ahead of a tasty one-day clash with top-of-the-ladder Melbourne University at University Main Oval on Saturday.

An unsafe pitch forced umpires to make the decision to call off the one-day game between Yarraville and Werribee in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association. The start of play was delayed due to spots of water on the pitch and damp run-ups, but play eventually got under way. After Yarraville had compiled 4-47 off 16.5 overs, the umpires noticed one or two balls unnaturally kicking up at batsmen and decided to abandon the match for player safety. Both captains were willing to continue on with the game, but the umpires overruled and the points were split three apiece. It means that Yarraville ended the round they way it started, sitting in fourth spot on the ladder. The Eagles have a significant 12-point gap over the rest of the chasing pack ahead of their two-day contest against Taylors Lakes at Lionheart Reserve starting on Saturday. The big result of the weekend was Altona losing to Bayswater by six wickets. James Grubb was the only A’s batsman to shine with 42 as his side could only muster 8-139 off 45 overs. Bayswater cruised to victory in the 39th over. Williamstown made an impressive start to the new year, crushing Croydon by 75 runs. Matthew Dervan was outstanding for the Seagulls with 86 of his side’s 223. Croydon finished well short on 7-148. Round 22 of the Footscray Cycling Clubâ€™s 2019/20 Criterium season saw riders enjoy the fast and smooth Drake Boulevard Circuit in Altona with all prizemoney and profits going to the Bushfire Appeal. With a fantastic turnout, the club raised over $1800 to help victims of the recent bushfires along Australiaâ€™s East Coast. A-Gradeâ€™s race saw an incessant number of serious attacks, notably from strongmen like Travis Small, Jimmy Butler and Josh Zammit. It finished with a hectic sprint; the last few laps a flurry of riders scrambled for a wheel trying to stay near the front. In the end, it was 25-year-old Club Criterium Champion, Josh Zammit, who took the win a half-wheel ahead of Jason Costin and Russell Lee. In B-grade, Stuart Darling won from Leigh Kelly in second and Tim Jones in third, with Mark Micallef taking the bunch sprint in behind. C-Gradeâ€™s race was equally as fast and saw a mass bunch sprint in which Gerrit Prent just held off Barry Heywood and Matt Browell, with Diane Edwards taking the Womenâ€™s C race ahead of Phillip Thomas. D-Grade saw Simon Gullery take a strong sprint win from Jerrery Moon and Oskar Van Wyss, with Emma Andrews taking Womenâ€™s D form Jill Stevenson and Kerryn Minehan.
