Celebrating a young hero By Goya Dmytryshchak South Morang boy Julian Ketteridge was last week named Victoria’s youngest community hero after saving his grandmother during a trip to Scienceworks in May. Julian, who was four at the time, had been spending the day with his grandmother, Jenelle, and baby sister Zoe. As they were leaving Scienceworks and Jenelle was putting the kids in the car, she suffered a cardiac arrest and collapsed on the ground, hitting her head. Julian jumped from the car and tried to wake her before calling out for help. His cries alerted Sunshine couple Lachlann Carter and Jenna Williams, who were bundling
their own two children into their car. Earlier in the day, Lachlann’s son had been playing with Julian, virtually racing against Cathy Freeman. Lachlann sprinted over to perform CPR as Jenna called triple-0 and shielded Julian from what was unfolding. “I bolted across the carpark about 50 metres and just started CPR,” Lachlann said. “It was a deserted windswept carpark. I was screaming out for help and I was also singing at the top of my lungs, Stayin’ Alive, because I remembered from the first aid training.” Scienceworks staff arrived with a defibrillator and administered a shock before firefighters and paramedics arrived. Jenelle regained a pulse and started breathing.
She was rushed to hospital where she remained for five days. “I feel very privileged and very lucky someone was there that day and someone nearby could do CPR and there was a defibrillator,” Jenelle said last week. Julian’s recollection from the day starts with enjoying the virtual reality race against Cathy Freeman. “When I got in the car, ’Nelle fell over, then I got out of my seatbelt and called out for help,” he said. “Lachlann came and they said, ‘wake up, wake up’. Julian said he felt “happy” to be called a community hero. Mum Amy said she didn’t have words to describe how proud she was. “As a parent, I don’t think it could get any
better than that,” she said. “We’re just so thankful that the chain of events happened the way they did.” The trio was among 11 Victorians last week honoured in the Ambulance Victoria Community Heroes Awards for brave and selfless intervention to save the life of a stranger, neighbour, family member or friend. Ambulance Victoria chief executive Tony Walker said he hoped the awards would inspire others in the community. “Knowing first aid, downloading the GoodSAM app if you are first aid qualified, learning CPR and teaching children how and when to call triple-0 are simple things that everyone can do, but can make the world of difference in an emergency,” he said.

Cops seize record $1b drug haul By Ewen McRae More than $1 billion of illicit drugs have been seized after a series of raids across the western suburbs uncovered Australia’s largest ever onshore methamphetamine haul. Three people have been charged after Australian Federal Police executed warrants at properties in Darley, Sunshine West, Brooklyn, Elwood and Murrumbeena on December 4. IT worker Stephen Francis Mizzi, 37, from Elwood, and couple Rachel Annette Cachia, 37, and Donovan Mark Rodrigues, 38 – both
customs brokers from Darley – were charged on Thursday in relation to the record haul. The AFP alleges all three were involved in the importation of more than 1.6 tonnes of illicit drugs – equal to almost 16 million drug deals – in stereo speakers originating from Bangkok, Thailand. In total, 1.596 tonnes of methamphetamine and 37 kilograms of heroin (a total of 1633 kgs) were detected with an estimated street value of $1.197 billion and $18.5 million, respectively. Police say it is the largest seizure of heroin in Australia since 2017.
AFP Deputy Commissioner Neil Gaughan praised the work of officers in keeping the drugs from reaching the community, and said the seizure was a warning to those seeking to import illicit drugs into Australia. “Australian law enforcement agencies are committed to combating the hold organised crime has on Australia to keep dangerous drugs off our streets and out of our homes,” he said. “Australia is a lucrative market for drug traffickers only due to the amount of drugs consumed by the public and the price paid for those drugs.
“This is a social problem that is the responsibility of everyone to address. “Police will continue to protect our communities and borders against exploitation by sophisticated criminal networks.” Border Force officers detected the drugs in vacuum-sealed bags after x-ray technology detected anomalies inside the speakers. The three people have each been charged with numerous counts of importing a commercial quantity of a border controlled drug, which carries a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.

Jeweller finally calls time Time is finally ticking for Footscray jeweller Max Cooper. Mr Cooper, 94, has been a familiar face at 251 Barkly Street for 81 years, ever since his father opened a tobacconist store in 1938. Early next year, the owner and operator of M & N Cooper Jewellers will be downing his eyepiece and putting away the tools for the final time, so he can spend more time with his wife. “My wife is not well and she needs me at home, somebody needs to be with her,” he said. Mr Cooper arrived in Footscray in 1938 as a fresh-faced 13-year-old, after his Jewish parents
sensed they were no longer safe in Germany. He finished his schooling at Footscray Tech, moved on to university and lectured at RMIT. His father passed away in 1947 and his mother continued on with the shop, opening up the back of the shop to a man who did watch repairs. “At that stage I was lecturing and I took an interest in watch repairing and helped as much as I could,” Mr Cooper said. “I finally decided to turn the place into a jewellery place and gave up my other job. I’ve been in the shop itself ever since.” Mr Cooper said he has never lost his love for
the craftsmanship of his job, but it is the people that has kept him coming back every week. “I developed a good relationship with people coming here, I really found that people are basically nice and good,” he said. “You can’t imagine how many phone calls I’m getting, people seeing that I’m leaving, it’s nice, it’s pleasant.” The father of three has 15 grandchildren and 57 great-grandchildren. “I’ll face my maker and say I had a good life,” he said.
Household food scraps in Maribyrnong could soon be saved from landfill under a proposal that would see organic waste welcomed into green waste bins. Maribyrnong councillor Megan Bridger-Darling moved a motion at the recent council meeting, calling on the council to introduce a food organics into garden organics (FOGO) program, similar to that already operating in a number of other council areas including Hobsons Bay. Cr Bridger-Darling told the meeting that almost 40 per cent of the waste in the average Maribyrnong household bin that is going to landfill is food waste. “This decomposes in landfill, producing methane, a greenhouse gas with 25 times more global warming potential than carbon dioxide,” she said. “Removing the food waste and garden waste from landfill is the single most effective way that council can reduce our carbon emissions quickly.” Cr Bridger-Darling said every kilogram of food waste that is composted rather than sent to landfill is another kilogram that does not become methane. “This is long overdue. All of South Australia has a state government initiative that is implemented in every single council and it is just done,” she said. “We are in a state of absolute crisis.” Councillors unanimously supported the motion, which also called for more education to the community on food waste avoidance. Push for pedestrians
Huge boost for sports venues
By Goya Dmytryshchak More than 1000 postcards calling on the state government to provide safe pedestrian and cyclist access over the Queen Street road bridge at Altona Meadows have been handed to Altona MP Jill Hennessy. It comes as preliminary work starts on the major upgrade of the bridge. About 20,000 vehicles use the bridge each day, but pedestrians, cyclists or those with wheelchairs and prams have to take a 1.6 kilometre off-road detour across Laverton Creek.

In July, Hobsons Bay council, pedestrians and cyclists launched a campaign calling for a pedestrian crossing to be incorporated into the bridge strengthening project. Mayor Colleen Gates said there was a need for the bridge to provide safe access for cyclists and pedestrians, particularly for vulnerable residents such as children and the elderly who could not walk the extra distance. “Major Road Projects Victoria has begun the early work for their scheduled upgrade to the bridge and we anticipate that major road disruptions from January through to May 2020 will affect our local community,” she said. “This bridge is one of only three exit points from the suburb of Altona Meadows and these works will result in significant inconveniences for our community but will not deliver on safe cycling and pedestrian access as a key outcome of the works.”

Hobsons Bay council has awarded $8.96 million in sporting infrastructure contracts for Donald McLean Reserve in Spotswood, WLJ Crofts Reserve in Altona North and Bayside College’s Williamstown campus. A $7.5 million contract for pavilions and carparks at the two reserves was partly funded by a $4.5 million state government contribution as part of the West Gate Tunnel Project. Donald McLean Reserve is used by sporting groups including Spotswood Cricket Club, Spotswood Football Club and Westgate Golf Club which have more than 620 active members in total. WLJ Crofts Reserve has about 400 regular participants from the Agility Dog Club of Victoria, Altona North Cricket Club, Western Jets Football Club and Williamstown Superules Football Club. A $1.46 million contract was awarded for a Bayside College sports pavilion extension at its Williamstown campus, which was largely funded by a $1.2 million state government community sports infrastructure grant. The new pavilion will benefit players from Williamstown Junior Football Club, Williamstown Auskick Centre, Williamstown Cricket Club, Williamstown Tigers Netball Club and Williamstown Football Club for its pre-season training activities. Residents urged not to waste water
By Goya Dmytryshchak In a Victorian first, Hobsons Bay will have beach wheelchairs available for hire seven days a week in January. The wheelchairs will be available from noon to 5pm every day thanks to a partnership between the Altona Lifesaving Club, Williamstown Swimming and Lifesaving Club and Altona Village Traders Association. Hobsons Bay councillor Tony Briffa said going to the beach was something most people took for granted. “In a first for Victoria, our beach wheelchairs will be available seven days a week,” Cr Briffa said. “This enables individuals with mobility impairments the freedom to make a spontaneous trip down to the beach – a pleasure which most Melburnians can take for granted.” As reported by Star Weekly last week, the traders initiated a move to employ two full-time lifeguards at Altona beach in January, with financial support from Rotary Club of Altona, Lions Club of Altona, Altona Bowling Club, Altona RSL, Altona Community Bank and Altona Sports Club. Traders liaison officer Sharon Walsh said the move meant the wheelchairs could be taken out more frequently. “We will make history as an accessible beach,” she said. “Not that we’re trying to be the first, but I think it’s because we’re looking at different things we’re breaking new ground so that’s why we will be the first.” Wheelchairs for hire include the Sandcruiser for adults on the sand (Altona), the Sandpiper for children on the sand (Altona and Williamstown), the MobiChair for going in the water with a support person (Altona and Williamstown) and the DaVinci manual

Residents have been urged to make every drop of water count, as part of a campaign aimed at getting Melburnians to use 155 litres of water per person, per day. According to the annual Water Outlook report, which is put together by City West Water, Melbourne Water, South East Water and Yarra Valley Water, Melburnians use an average 162 litres of water per person, per day. The report said that Melbourne’s water storage level is 63.9 per cent, and that residential water use made up 65 per cent of Melbourne’s total water use. Showering accounts for almost a third of water used at home. City West Water’s acting managing director, Maree Lang, said that factors such as an increasing population and a warming climate have contributed to Melbourne’s storages decreasing by an annual average of 61 billion litres over the last five years. “As a community we do need to be more efficient with our water use – Melburnians are great at using water wisely, but more can be done to reduce the demand on our water supplies,” she said. “From brushing your teeth with the tap off, to shaving one minute off your shower time and sorting out water leaks, we all have a role to play,” Ms Lang said.

Test to ease public health fears By Benjamin Millar Authorities should carry out immediate health tests in areas surrounding events such as the toxic Tottenham fire, according to a key recommendation by a parliamentary inquiry into recycling and waste management. The final report of the committee inquiry, tabled last week, focused on three major industrial fires including the August 2018 Tottenham fire, noting several key issues contributing to increased fire risks at each site. The report found unfit and insufficient facilities to store and dispose of waste
contributed to the fires, along with a lax system of enforcement and monitoring of chemical waste storage. The report also noted the distress felt by residents due to health concerns and the lack of communication during and after industrial fires, particularly around ongoing health risks. A witness told the committee that she suffered nosebleeds after being exposed to Stony Creek while taking photographs of the effects of the fire. The committee found that in addition to any physical effects, one of the major impacts of the fires was the distress caused to the community
by both the fact of the fires and their causes. It criticised the perceived poor communication from government agencies, “which left community members unsure of risk levels to their health and the environmental impact on the creek”. “The stories were confronting and did not necessarily support the view put by government agencies that there were no health impacts of the fires,” the report found. The committee found that significant events such as the Tottenham fire warrant more detailed investigation than simply air and water quality testing.
The first of the Committee’s 34 recommendations was that the Department of Health and Human Services undertake public health testing in surrounding areas following a major incident where community members may be exposed to toxic smoke or other hazardous residues. “A health screening of residents, even on a voluntary participation basis, could ensure that the health of community members is not directly impacted by an incident,” it found. “It would also provide the community with some assurance that they and their families were safe.”
Brush up and eat up From a craft y cocktail to a picture perfect picnic, people are being invited to dabble in the arts while socialising over summer. Altona’s Louis Joel Arts and Community Centre is next month hosting a creative summer school, which will be launched at a wine, cheese and art event. Centre manager Kim Reilly developed the program, which runs from January 3-16, in the aim of getting people socialising while being creative. “We wanted to give a concentrated approach so people could try things to then launch the new year,” she said. “We were hoping that our program would then give people lots to look at. “They might want to try a fabric-dyeing workshop and then do some more with it later on. “We certainly wanted the socialising. We wanted people to talk about art. We want
people just to dabble in it. “We also have connected with a couple of small businesses, so Paperazzi Design Studio is doing the paper making and the bookbinding, and one of our local artists is doing the linocut blocks. “Japanese bookbinding just felt like it was really different. And ‘leather-wrap journal’ – it’s things that we haven’t done much of before here.” Ms Reilly said other events focused on food. “We were looking at picture perfect picnics, just trying to get people to connect socially, put a little picnic together and impress their friends, and just to be social with it,” she said. “We have a session on movie food … so we’re doing a grazing menu to eat while you’re watching a romantic movie.” For tickets and details, visit www.ljac.com.au Goya Dmytryshchak

Property on the rise in the west By Goya Dmytryshchak and Benjamin Millar Melbourne’s property market has helped drive the biggest monthly increase in national house prices in 16 years as falling interest rates and a shortage of supply combine to drive up values. CoreLogic’s monthly measure of values showed dwelling prices for Melbourne’s west rose 1.3 per cent last month and 3.3 per cent over the past quarter. Greg Hocking Elly Partners director Wayne Elly said the real estate slump was definitely
over for now, with areas such as Altona, Yarraville and Williamstown selling quite well. “Definitely, lack of quality stock is forcing the market up,” he said. “Certainly, interest rates probably have helped fuel it as well because people are confident that they aren’t going to go up again in the short term, that’s for sure.” Mr Elly said people have had more confidence in the market since the middle of the year and more rises are likely over the next six to 12 months. Sweeney Footscray director Tracey Dean
said she had also seen momentum return to the market across the inner-west. “We are absolutely thrilled to see the market moving really well again, at the moment we’ve pretty much sold everything that can be sold,” she said. “Everything is moving, which is wonderful after a tough 12 months.” Ms Dean said West Footscray, Yarraville and central Footscray have been particularly popular. The bulk of those buying are people already in the area looking to upsize, while the properties moving fastest are those with a
“unique” quality. Mr Elly said he had seen a similar trend in buyers looking for quality stock and happy to pay more for it. “It’s probably a good time to come on the market if you want to be selling.” House values in Melbourne increased by 2.4 per cent, taking the median value to $774,023. Melbourne house values increased by almost $23,000 through November to be 2.9 per cent up so far this year. – with The Age

Williamstown kindergarten children have sold an artwork for $700 so that other kids will have food and toys this Christmas. Robina Scott Kindergarten held an art show and auction as part of its annual Christmas concert, selling one large piece that 38 children had collaborated on. Kindergarten teacher Louise Richards, whose class is called ‘yellow group’, said the children had been saddened to learn some other children may not receive presents at Christmas. “One of my educators who I work with, she hit hard times at one point in her life,” Ms Richards said. “She said that when she was hitting hard times that she went to a local church that gave out hampers and toys to children at Christmas time. “We spoke to the children about that and the children were very upset to hear that there

A new ‘Men’s Den’ at Benetas St George’s residential aged care in Altona Meadows is building connections among residents who aren’t that interested in pursuits such as bingo. “We don’t talk about politics here,” said John Ozanne, the 90 year-old founding member. “It’s just about getting together here and having a good time.” The Men’s Den was started in July by pastoral care practitioner David Wilcox. It’s a small group that runs twice a week with activities like watching football and repair shows, and
holding barbecues. “It’s been two months and I haven’t had to promote it once to the guys,” Mr Wilcox said. “The word just got out and the number of men keeps increasing. “We’ve based it on the simple premise of getting people together and having a yarn. “The guys didn’t want games or bingo. What they really want is a place to talk. “Men are very good at isolating themselves and can find it hard to reach out and find the social supports they need.” “This can be very hard for men in aged care where they are in unfamiliar surroundings and not living with their family and loved ones.” Men interested in volunteering with the group can contact co-ordinator Carol Digna at carol.digna@benetas.com.au

Fire fleet takes off By Esther Lauaki A larger-than-ever fleet of 50 firefighting aircraft unveiled at Avalon will be “critical” this fire season, Victoria’s emergency services minister has said. The fleet will hit the skies in the coming weeks and months to defend lives and property across the state. Police and Emergency Services Minister Lisa Neville said the record fleet, including two large air tankers and two aircranes, would support firefighters in what is shaping up to be a busy fire season.

“With the return of two large air tankers, a record air fleet and thousands of firefighters ready to respond, Victoria is more prepared than ever for the upcoming fire season,” Ms Neville said on her visit to Avalon Airport last week. “Victoria’s largest-ever firefighting fleet will provide crucial support to our hard-working crews on the ground this summer, responding immediately to major incidents right across the state.” The large air tankers can each carry up to 15,000 litres of water, foam or retardant and will be based at Avalon airport. The aircranes, which will be based at Essendon and Moorabbin airports, can carry up to 7500 litres of water and are essential in supporting other aircraft positioned across the state. The fleet also includes a mix of fire-bombing

aircraft, air supervision and air intelligencegathering aircraft, and has a surge capacity of up to 100 that can support the Victorian core fleet and be called upon when needed. Victoria will continue to operate fire-bombing aircraft as immediate response or pre-determined dispatch in locations across the state, which enables aircraft to respond to fires at the same time as fire trucks. Lily D’Ambrosio said all available emergency management staff and agencies would be poised to respond to incidents across the state. “It’s vital that people across the state are prepared for the possibility of a bushfire – whether they’re at home, visiting family or friends or away on holidays,” Ms D’Ambrosio said. Women’s health wins two awards A Footscray-based health service has pipped out a number of statewide organisations to collect two gongs at the 2019 Victorian Public Healthcare Awards. Women’s Health West was recognised at the recent awards ceremony for two projects run in partnership with other bodies in the western suburbs. The Secretary’s Award for excellence in culturally diverse health went to the ‘Human Relations’ program, which increases the sexual and reproductive health knowledge of newly-arrived young people with refugee and migrant backgrounds. The Chief Health Officer’s Award for supporting healthy populations was awarded to the ‘Community champions take action’ project, which encourages people in the west to take action to prevent violence against women. WHW chief executive Dr Robyn Gregory said nearly 1500 people took part in Women’s Health West’s health and wellbeing programs in the past financial year. “We are absolutely delighted that two of these programs have been recognised and celebrated by the state government,” she said. “Both awards reflect long-term collaboration with partner agencies, which is testament to the commitment and dedication of our staff and our partners, and reflective of the importance of collaboration … in Melbourne’s west.” Benjamin Millar

Braybrook man guilty of terror act By Benjamin Millar A Braybrook man has become Australia’s first alleged right-wing extremist to be found guilty of preparing a terror attack under federal anti-terrorism laws. Phillip Galea, 33, was found guilty of planning and preparing a terror attack, with a jury finding he planned to target a left-wing rally with chemical bombs. Galea had also looked up the addresses of a
range of ‘left wing’ targets including the union movement’s Trades Hall headquarters, the Melbourne Resistance Centre and the city’s anarchist club. The jury also found Galea guilty of creating a document called the Patriot’s Cookbook, which prosecutors described as a how-to guide for terrorists. Galea, who was associated with the far-right Reclaim Australia group, had argued the Patriot’s Cookbook was intended as satire.
His Victorian Supreme Court jury trail, which concluded last week, followed his arrest in a counter-terrorism raid at a Ballarat Road property in Braybrook in August 2016. Victoria Police counter-terrorism command assistant commissioner Ross Guenther said at the time that that police had swooped because the threat to the community had escalated to a level “specific enough to cause us alarm�. Arson and explosives experts had earlier raided Galea’s home in November 2015, seizing
five electric cattle prods and 362 grams of mercury. Computer equipment was also seized, revealing research on homemade bombs, ballistic armour and guns. The jury began their deliberations last Monday and returned the guilty verdicts on Thursday. He remains in custody awaiting a sentence. - with The Age

Williamstown’s award-winning artist Prue Stevenson has proven wrong the experts who told her family she would never live independently. The autistic self-advocate and consultant with Amaze is now spreading the message that neurodiversity is something to be embraced, not changed. Prue, 30, said she was misdiagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder at seven, and diagnosed with Asperger’s in 2011. Before she was diagnosed, Prue had been suspended and expelled from school multiple times. “At my first primary school, I was getting bullied a lot,” she said. “There’d be a group of children either circle me or pushing me against the wall … and they would call me names. “I would hit and kick and run away. “The teachers used to try and grab me to stop me from running away. “If I was having sensory overload or I was having a panic attack or my brain was shutting down having a meltdown, my fight or flight reflexes would kick in and I didn’t have the skills to self-regulate with that. “Teachers aren’t allowed to grab children any more, so that’s really great, but there’s still a lot of misunderstanding around not knowing that autistic children need more processing time.” Prue, who has just finished her masters in fine arts, said she uses the repetitive movement known as “stimming” as part of her art. “It gives us positive sensory input to regulate our emotions and any sort of energy and anxiety, but also, if there’s a negative sensory input that’s causing us great pain, to combat that with positive sensory input.” One of Prue’s major artistic outlets is
knitting, which doubles as a type of stimming. She has created scarves up to 30 metres long, which can take two years. “Growing up, I used a lot of my brain capacity – almost all of it – to put filters up and act like society and my parents and educators expected me to and needed me to. “I grew up not being allowed to stim, which
meant that I wasn’t regulating my emotions, I wasn’t self-regulating. “Stimming can prevent meltdowns. It can prevent my brain from shutting down, and give me a sense of relief and calm me down.” Prue now lives out of home in a share house and has found success with art, appearing in numerous exhibitions, winning awards and
performing live art installations She was recently featured on docuseries, Perspective Shift, which is available on SBS On Demand for the next 12 months. Prue said her story showed that autistic behaviours were something to be embraced. “Stimming is the autistic cultural dance,” she said.

In a world where large corporations are gobbling up smaller businesses, Active Audiology in Altona is proudly flying the flag for independence. Cris Ivanidis, audiologist of 20 years standing and owner of Active Audiology for the past eight, believes these big companies are actually undermining the hearing profession. “We’re seeing more and more companies, with no traditional affiliation with the hearing profession, now offering people diverse services within the health sector, with hearing facilities ‘tacked on’,” he says. “We do only hearing services. We don’t sell insurance, glasses, groceries or coffins et al on the side. One hundred per cent of our time and resources are dedicated to successful hearing device fittings and an absolutely personalised service that makes people feel listened to.” Clinicians at Active Audiology are locally trained – and hired only if they demonstrate the right ethics and professional standards when counselling and treating hearing loss. And, of
course, being independent means the clinic is free of commercial bias and corporate control. Marina Opacak, a talented audiologist who works alongside Cris, shares a story that embodies what Active Audiology is about. “We recently saw a distressed client who worked in a call centre and was struggling to hear customers. Her confidence was shattered and she was stressed about being able to continue in her job. “A great deal of care was taken in counselling this client on her emotional concerns,” Marina explains. “It turned out that a hearing device was going to be the best solution. “The process took longer than normal because we knew she needed extra attention and care with her hearing management. New hospital a step closer By Ewen McRae A new 24-hour hospital in Melton is a step closer, with the state government announcing that Western Health will run the facility once it is completed. While the business case for the hospital is still being formulated, the announcement that Western Health will integrate the new hospital into its existing health network – which includes Sunshine and Footscray Hospitals – is a positive sign. Acting health minister Martin Foley said
Western Health was best placed to deliver the necessary services for the community. “Melton’s new hospital will be in trusted hands,” Mr Foley said. “Western Health has a proud track record providing the highest quality care to patients throughout Melbourne’s booming western suburbs. “As one of the fastest growing communities in Australia, Melton locals deserve a world-class, 24-hour public hospital, right on their doorstep.” A tender has gone out to a shortlist of six
consultants, who will carry out the vital planning and design work and find the best site for the new hospital. The announcement has led Djerriwarrh Health Services and Western Health to commence discussions over a possible amalgamation of services to better meet the needs of the community. A joint statement from the two organisations said any amalgamation would be voluntary from both organisations, and was still in the very early stages. “The announcement opens the way for a
wider examination of the future of healthcare needs of Melbourne’s West,” the statement said. “Following four years of close partnership between the services, the Western Health board and Djerriwarrh Health Service’s Administrator have agreed to explore the best possible options and opportunities for healthcare in Melbourne’s west. “Engagement with staff and local communities of both health services will be an important part of this process and will build on recent community consultation by Djerriwarrh Health Services.”

Footscray City College students are making waves that can be heard across the globe. Students are broadcasting Footscray to the world via online radio station ‘Footscray Live’, hosting and producing stories that are streaming 24 hours per day from this week until February. Almost 30 students who put up their hand to be involved are being trained up in radio production and presentation, working in teams to create programs for a local and global audience. Co-ordinator Malcolm Frietz said the students have been interviewing high profile western suburbs guests and holding youth forums to discuss issues that affect their community. “Working with radio has been fantastic, involving people in this project has been a great way to build a community,” he said. “Here in the west we are such a tight-knit community

Working with young people from year 10 to year 12 provides an opportunity to see them grow into confident young adults ready to play their part in shaping our local community and the world beyond. I am very lucky that my colleagues at Caroline Chisholm Catholic College are incredibly hard-working, committed and supportive of our students. When we try a new approach or initiative it is always supported by teachers and support staff who are willing to go the extra mile. What’s the biggest challenge? You never know what the day will bring, and things can change very quickly. There are so many parks and open spaces, and a significant investment in planting trees and expanding the canopy. Hats off to Cup fashion By Esther Lauaki Punters turned out in spectacular fashion for the Werribee Cup at the weekend. The Werribee Racing Club experienced one of its biggest crowds in years, with thousands of racegoers frocked up and enjoying the sunshine for the eight-race meet. The Paul Preusker-trained Rupture convincingly took out the main race, his second country cup of the year. Mr Preusker said the team was “enjoying a good ride” with Rupture, ridden by apprentice Michael Poy. “We came here with the right horse and credit to him, he keeps standing up and thriving,” Mr Preusker said. Double You Tee took second place, ahead of Aristocratic Miss, third, and Danon Roman in fourth. Jenny Beard won the coveted Fashions on the Field title with a black and yellow dress paired with top hat, while a dapper Michael McAlpine won the men’s category with a pink ensemble. The next meet at Werribee racecourse will be held on Christmas Eve.
West Gate Freeway ramp closure The Grieve Parade outbound exit ramp is closed from the night of Friday 29 November until Thursday1 DECEMBER 19 December. TO 15 DECEMBER 2019

The latest economic reviews have all the right indicators for a continued rise in the Melbourne housing market, with NAB’s most recent forecast estimating a 7.4 per cent price rise for houses and units in 2020.

SPORT Surprise ABL call up spurs Sunshine’s Jordan Young

One of the keys behind Sunshine’s blistering start to the Baseball Victoria summer league division 1 season has been the form of shortstop Jordan Young. Young has been growing in confidence in the batters box, while maintaining his typically high standard defensively in the in-field, which has seen Eagles coach Stuart Clayton label him as the best shortstop in the league. Young’s impressive start to the season was recognised at higher levels when he was recently called up to play for a short-handed Auckland Tuatara in the Australian Baseball League. The 26-year-old had long aspired to play in the ABL, but never thought the opportunity would come with anyone other than the hometown Melbourne Aces. It was a nice surprise for Young when he was called up for the Tuatara to play against none other than the Aces. “They gave me a call early in the week saying they needed a local player, so I was able to make the time and go down,” Young said. “It’s something I wasn’t expecting, but very exciting at the same time.” Young relished the experience playing with
Auckland. Welcomed to the Tuatara fold by the players and coaches, he felt comfortable from the moment he stepped into the clubhouse. “They were really good people all round,” Young said. “They all welcomed me in and enjoyed having me there. “It was very positive.” Young showed he was not there to merely make up the numbers, producing a number of quality, though luckless at-bats, before getting his first ABL hit. He was not as nervous as he envisaged he might be, which is probably to do with the fact he was coming face to face with Aces players, who he has great knowledge of through his time with Sunshine. “Playing against Melbourne, I know a lot of guys on that team, so it made it a bit easier,” Young said. “I had a little bit of knowledge on the opposition that I could use to help me prepare. “The nerves weren’t as bad as I thought it would be.” While he is hopeful of another ABL call up in the not too distant future, the Eagles’
playing assistant coach is focused on taking his club side to premiership glory. The Eagles remain top of the ladder, despite a narrow 3-2 loss to Sandringham on Sunday. “We’ve got a really good team this year and our record shows that,” Young said. “We’ve got to keep it going. “I think everyone is pretty eager to go as far as we can and try and win the championship this year. “Last year we made it to the finals for the first time in quite a while in division one, so we’re keen and driven to go as far as we can.” Young will continue to play a key role for Sunshine. “I’ve been pretty consistently getting on base throughout the whole season, but in terms of clean, safe, good quality hits, they’ve been starting to come in the last five or six games,” Young said. Sunshine will play the third game of its three-game series with Sandringham at the Melbourne Ballpark tonight before turning its focus to Waverley Wildcats on Sunday. Lance Jenkinson
Sweet taste of Victory By Lance Jenkinson Western United coach Mark Rudan cut the look of a satisfied and relieved man on Sunday evening. United ended its frustrating three-game losing streak with a come-from-behind 3-1 win over Melbourne Victory in an A-League local derby at GMHBA Stadium. With honourable losses piling up in recent weeks, United needed to find a win that would keep them within touching distance of the top teams in the competition. Carrying a two-goal lead into half-time, United did what it has rarely done in the early part of this season, put up the shutters and defended all three points. Rudan made no apologies for the defensive style of play after taking the lead in a pulsating first half. “Today, particularly at half-time, it was about doing what we needed to do [to win],” Rudan said. “We play in a bit of a result oriented world, so it was important that defensively we tightened things up. “The last three games we’ve won every facet in terms of stats, except for the one that’s the most important and that’s the scoreboard. “Today, the opposite, but we don’t really care. “The first half performance, we did enough to win that game, then in the second half they rolled their sleeves, they were very disciplined and very structured in terms of what our game plan was, so I’m really proud of them.” The opening 45 minutes was action packed for the 10,128 spectators – a record home crowd for Western United. It was the visiting Melbourne Victory who drew first blood, when the speedy Andrew Nabbout pounced to score on the counter in the 14th minute. As has been the trend for most of the season, Western United seem to enjoy the challenge of fighting back from a deficit. United was swift with its response with veteran striker Besart Berisha awkwardly latching on to a perfect Connor Pain cross to head in the equaliser in the 17th minute. Out of respect to the Victory fans, who he will remain a legend amongst, Berisha was relatively muted in his goal celebration. If Victory’s defending of Berisha left a lot to be desired, its lack of attention at the set piece to Panagiotis Kone seven minutes later was unforgivable.

Dead ball specialist Alessandro Diamanti whipped in a nice ball into the box and Kone was afforded too much space and volleyed home uncontested. Just before the break, Western United found a third goal, and this was jaw-dropping good. Speedy winger Josh Risdon delivered a peach of a cross to Berisha, who glanced his header inside the far post. It was a thing of beauty and Berisha could not help but celebrate with gusto on this occasion.

That issue was totally rectified in the win over the Victory. “There was a massive emphasis on our attacking third [at training] and you saw the result today,” Rudan said. “I’m really pleased for them because when you work on things on the training track and it comes to fruition out on the pitch on game day, as coaches there’s nothing better for us.” The fourth-placed Western United will have a short turnaround to Friday night’s trip to Brisbane Roar at Suncorp Stadium.

EQC game changer for Mercedes By Ewan Kennedy, Marque Motoring The Mercedes-Benz EQC, a family-size SUV, is the first all-electric vehicle from the prestigious German company. It’s built by EQ, the division of Mercedes-Benz established to guide the company’s transition to electric mobility. Mercedes-Benz Australia-Pacific chief executive and managing director Horst von Sanden, said Australia was among the first countries in the world to receive stock of the ground-breaking EQC, with the first deliveries to customers expected early 2020. “The EQC is a game changer for Mercedes-Benz, but also it imposes a more luxurious standard of electric vehicle ownership,� he said. “Our aim has never been to be the first to this market, but to offer the most complete solution possible to the question of future mobility. With the all-electric EQC, we are confident we have done just that. Electric now has a Mercedes.� Energy consumption for the Mercedes EQC is rated at 21.4 kWh/100km. With a full charge the EQC can travel for up to 434km (ADR measured). Charging options include free and unlimited fast-charging for the first five years of ownership at Chargefox ultra-rapid charging stations. By the time the first EQC deliveries begin, about 20 ultra-rapid charging sites will be located in Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. Using this network can provide a driving range from ‘empty’ of about 220 kilometres in 30 minutes, at the maximum DC charging rate of 110kW. Mercedes-Benz EQC owners will also be able to use a growing number of commercial pay-as-you-go fast-charging locations fitted with a Type 2 CCS plug. EQC customers can add a Mercedes-Benz
cars actually love because they are travelling at relatively slow speeds and every time you slow down and/or put the brakes on electricity is added to the battery. The Merc EQC is a decent-sized vehicle but has an excellent turning circle as there’s no combustion engine taking up space between the front wheels. This makes it a cinch around the tightest of roundabouts. Acceleration is instantaneous. We had started with the computer saying we had 318km till empty. Less than you might expect, but very slow speed driving in tight underground carparks does chew up any type of fuel. After that initial 40km near the city the range the distance to empty was at 293km. At long last we were onto the open road, heading by a circuitous country drive to Torquay. There were plenty of hills, again you use extra electricity going up and get some of it back on the way down. Bends were taken with a minimum of fuss. Steering feel is a good on the EQC as on any other SUV Merc we tested. Again, the huge spread of torque made life simple and pleasant. When we arrive we had covered 165km and the computer was showing 214km remaining. The Ultra smooth shape of the Merc EQC looks great. (Supplied)
