Lieutenant Colonel Adam Hogan and Major Gabrielle Prideaux. (Damjan Janevski) 199723_01

Lieutenant Colonel Adam Hogan, a serving Newport father of two, said he would reflect on, not so much what the military had done, but what family and friends did to support them. “That gives me a chance to take stock and have a look at what I’ve got and why we do the things we do,” he said. He, too, emphasised the importance of the local RSL club.

“I used to have a neighbour over the road, George Ford – he’s passed now,” Lieutenant Colonel Hogan said. “He’s one of the immortals – one of the lifetime members. “He and I were quite close friends, as close as a 98 year-old could be with a 42 year-old. “It meant a lot to him, so he sort of got me involved in this as well. It was really sad [when it closed], and I used to speak with his daughter

a bit and she was gutted at what happened. “I’m glad that they’ve come back.” On Remembrance Day, members of Newport, Footscray and Spotswood Kingsville RSL and Friends of Williamstown RSL will meet at the Newport War Memorial at 10.30am. The community is invited to attend the commemoration service and to return to the club for refreshments afterwards.

For Gabrielle Prideaux, a recently retired army Major and Altona North mother of two, Remembrance Day will be a time to reflect on those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. Sitting in the quaint Newport RSL club last week, she is joined by a few members who, in the past year, helped save the sub-branch from permanent closure. Major Prideaux retired two years ago after nearly 30 years’ service. In 2011, she was the only female officer on the ground in Afghanistan while serving with America and other allies. “In Afghan, we were working with counterinsurgency,” she said. “Basically, what we tried to do there is to train the Afghan army and the police forces. “We were also trying to reintegrate the ex-Mujahideen, the most ruthless people on earth, pretty much.” She said her children “had to deal with a fair bit” in the past few years as she recovered from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. “It’s taken me two and half years to be sitting here because when you have PTSD it’s not easy for you to socialise,” Major Prideaux said. “Legacy has really supported my children. “The support from the RSL here has been amazing. They check in on me. They say, ‘Hey, come and have a snag on the barbie’, to try and get me back in to socialising. “This [club] was going to close and it’s really good to have a traditional club because it has the traditional values. “They do come to your home, they do make those personal phone calls. They are really really keen to ensure that the local area vets are being supported, and it’s really appreciated.” She tears up as she reflects on the meaning of Remembrance Day, a time when she will remember those who have been lost. “I’d really like to see that this is something that in the future doesn’t die, kind of fade away,” Major Prideaux said. “It’s really important to celebrate the lives of those who have passed away, who have given us the freedoms that we enjoy today here in Australia. “Without people leaving their families, making that sacrifice in itself – I mean, I didn’t see my kids for eight months – and then, on Remembrance Day, those people ultimately dying for the cause is something that Australians, particularly the youth of today, need to be able to acknowledge and understand because I think sometimes they take what they have today for granted.”

A MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR

OUT AND ABOUT

It has been an honour to serve this City as Mayor for the past year, following on from ten years as a Yarraville Ward Councillor. As Mayor it’s been my pleasure to meet so many of our new residents at Citizenship Ceremonies, chat to community groups and work with my fellow Councillors to achieve the best for the community. We’ve completed Church Street Children’s Centre, an investment of $6.2 million to alleviate some of the long-day care and kindergarten needs in the municipality. We also opened the first and only mountain bike circuit in inner Melbourne at Quarry Park increasing wellbeing opportunities, and we’re progressing the NeXT Project, a future focused library in Footscray that aims to include a performing arts space amongst other community dedicated spaces.

Vietnamese dig deep for hospital By Tate Papworth Brimbank’s Vietnamese community has raised more than $300,000 to bolster the Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s Hospital. Over a six-month period, the Vietnamese Community Appeal, led by the Quang Minh Temple in Braybrook, raised the funds for the newly opened hospital. The funds have gone towards the purchase of a neonatal intensive care transport cot to provide for the safe transfer of sick and

premature babies to the hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Six neonatal cameras that allow families remote viewing of their babies were also purchased with the money raised. The Joan Kirner Hospital is only the second in Australia to have the specialised cameras installed. Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s Hospital divisional director Adelle Mollo said they’re a significant investment. “Having a newborn baby in intensive care is a parent’s worst nightmare, she said.

“They feel fearful and powerless and often their babies will be hospitalised for weeks or even months, making it difficult for parents and family to always be by their sides. “These new cameras can help to make parents’ time away from their newborns a little less stressful, by providing on-demand, live streaming of their baby direct from the neonatal cot. “It also provides remote viewing for extended family members, especially those that live interstate or overseas.

Western Health and the Western Health Foundation honoured the Vietnamese community’s contribution with a special celebration last month, during which a commemorative plaque was unveiled. The plaque will be installed at the entrance to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Since it was opened on September 15, 2019, the unit has cared for 26 babies. Western Health says about half of these would previously have been transferred to another service.

A fusion of food and music The third Jamaican Music and Food Festival will be held this Sunday in Williamstown, featuring the Mad Professor. Festival founder DJ Stick Mareebo said this year’s event would have more international acts playing on the main stage on the waterfront. “Mad Professor is a genius of sound,â€? he said. “He remixed Massive Attack’s album, he’s worked with everybody in the industry. “We have Richie Stephens ‌ Jamaica’s ska and rocksteady ambassador. We’ve

organised The Ska Vendors, who are locals to Williamstown, to be Richie Stephens’ backing band. This is going to be mind-blowing. “Then, we have Masia One. She goes by the alter ego of the Far East Empress ‌ you have to see it to believe it.â€? In a true fusion of music and food, the festival will also have Carly Day stirring it up as the Jamaican Singing Chef. “She’ll be cooking and singing with a band, and then she’ll be giving the food away to the

people who are watching and listening, Stick said. There will be 45 vendors, carnival rides and a costume parade at the family-friendly event. The Pirates Tavern will have Jamaican beer on tap and vintage rocksteady and ska on speakers. The festival is on November 10 from 11-9pm at Seaworks, 82 Nelson Place Williamstown. A Kingsville wine bar and cafe has won its bid to open until 10pm on Friday and Saturday nights. Willow Wine Cafe on Williamstown Road applied to Maribyrnong council to extend the hours it was permitted to operate, but the council only agreed to an 8pm nightly closing time. Willow’s operator took the decision to the state’s planning tribunal, arguing that extending the hours to 10pm would not have an excessive negative impact on the amenity of surrounding neighbours. The council argued in VCAT that the extension was unreasonable because the cafe is within a residential zone. “An extension to 10pm puts the use at risk of transformation, from a cafĂŠ with a liquor component to a late-night wine bar, which is deemed to be incompatible with its surrounds,â€? its submission stated. “A bar function represents a vastly different use scenario that is typically encouraged within an activity centre and discouraged by council within this location.â€? A neighbour also raised concerns about parking and the barking of dogs left out the front of the cafĂŠ. But VCAT member Alison Glynn backed Willow, ordering the planning conditions be amended to allow the sale and consumption of liquor to continue until 10pm on Fridays and Saturdays. Ms Glynn said her decision was based on the venue only having the capacity for 20 people and the cafe was on a busy road. “The planning scheme recognises that some uses can occur along a main road that could not occur in the residential hinterland,â€? she said. “I need to balance the issues of need against amenity.â€? Cup sparks memories Fun and fashion were off and racing at Doutta Galla’s Yarraville Village Aged Care home recently as part of the 2019 Lexus Melbourne Cup Tour. Elderly residents were joined by local pupils in a colourful celebration of “the race that stops a nation”. Yarraville West Primary School pupils entertained the crowd with their singing, while home residents and their families showed off outfits they had been planning for weeks. Resident Jacqui reminisced about her family watching early runnings of the Melbourne Cup. “Dad would take us to Scotchman’s Hill on the Footscray side of the Maribyrnong River where we would have a picnic and watch the race that stops a nation,” she said.

Residents also discussed fashions of the day such as the time mini skirts were first worn at the races. Volunteer Sharon recalled being a child and picking up the discarded betting tickets that had been dropped on the ground. “Then we would get our grandmother to check to see if any were winners. Sometimes we got lucky!” Doutta Galla chairman Scott Chapman said the home was one of 39 community destinations chosen to host the Cup ahead of yesterday’s running of the famous race. “It was wonderful to be selected by the Victorian Racing Club to host the 2019 Lexus Melbourne Cup Tour,” he said.

Thieves stealing copper cables and vandalising the railways near Laverton caused Altona Loop services to be suspended or altered for more than 15 hours in the past fortnight. The thefts are believed to have occurred at dawn. Metro’s Network Security and Surveillance team is conducting overnight patrols and police are investigating.

Share space for all ages By Goya Dmytryshchak In what is being hailed a Melbourne first, plans for a multi-storey retirement village providing intergenerational programs with an adjoining childcare centre have been revealed for Altona North. The retirement village would be built on land next to the biggest Greek Orthodox church in Melbourne’s west, Dormition of Our Lady in Millers Road. Parish priest Father George Frangos said the Greek Orthodox Community of Hobsons Bay had sold surplus land for the retirement village. “That land, from the front of Millers Road right to the back of the property, kind of like an L-shape with the existing community hall, has been sold to a developer,” he said. “The developer is doing a vertical retirement village, but also we’re working in conjunction with one another. “From the proceeds of that sale, the community’s building the community centre, the childcare centre and the language school. “Then, basically, it’s going to become one big common space. That’s all part of the caveats. “There’s a big working relationship with a few different parties.” The proposed community hall, education centre and childcare centre have been approved by Hobsons Bay council. Father George said the proposed retirement village had been scaled back from about “six or seven storeys”. “A special offer’s been offered to the Greek residents of the area, so if they get in early they get the apartment at cost price and that’s part of the agreement,” he said. Project manager of the Greek community centre redevelopment, Dale Harrison, said the

retirement village model would be a Melbourne first. “We’ll be doing accommodation for NDIS for disabled people, some high-care for older people – like a nursing home but a bit higher care – and some retirement as well,” he said. “There’s some pretty cutting edge things there with integrating all the different age groups together. “It’s going to be making sure that it has programs in place for all of the people who are

there, so disabled people mixing with older people mixing with the childcare. “There is nothing else like this in Melbourne – nothing. “Everyone’s talking about integrating older people with younger people but no one’s doing it. This is going to be on a permanent basis.” He said plans for the retirement village were expected to be submitted to the council next year.

Armed offender appeal fails An armed offender must serve at least two and a half years in prison after failing in his bid to appeal his sentence for violent robberies, including an incident in West Footscray. Lachlan Carpio was sentenced in the County Court earlier this year to three years and nine months imprisonment, with a non-parole period of two years and six months, for armed robbery and other offences. The offences included robbing a phone, wallet and a $50 note from the driver of a car parked in West Footscray. Carpio was later seen travelling in a taxi in Footscray and fled on foot after police attempted to intercept him. He evaded police and attempted to carjack a vehicle before hiding in a roof space and becoming involved in a lengthy stand-off with police. Carpio appealed the sentence to the appeal court of the Supreme Court of Victoria, arguing he had been unfairly sentenced after being incorrectly described as a leader of the October 2017 Parkville riots. But Justices Simon Whelan and Phillip Priest rejected the appeal, arguing the complaint was without substance. “One thing you don’t expect someone on youth parole to do is commit an armed robbery, and then a little while later to be involved in an attempted carjacking, threatening to kill people in the vehicle,” the judges said. Call out for piazza artists By Goya Dmytryshchak Local artists are being invited to help create a piazza and installations at Hobsons Bay’s biggest shopping and commercial centre development, which will include the municipality’s first major cinema complex. Reading Cinemas is being built next to a Woolworths-anchored shopping centre at 290-298 Millers Road in Altona North. It will be known as Millers Junction Village. the $250 million Millers Junction precinct, is calling for expressions of interest from local artists to create two dimensional art installations at five locations. Artists’ input is also being sought for pedestrian crossings and links as part of the Millers Junction Public Art competition.

Heading the project is Village Well managing director Gilbert Rochecouste, whose company was behind the piazza outside Yarraville’s Sun Theatre. It was also influential in the revitalisation of Melbourne’s CBD laneways and the Queen Victoria night markets. “We created the vision for Abbotsford Convent, and we just finished creating a beautiful public square and piazza for the Bulldogs, you know Whitten Oval,” Mr Rochecouste said. “When a new development happens, we

want to bring authenticity and a sense of place.” He said the aim was to create a place people would love, “not just a bunch of shops”. “Creating a piazza was really important,” Mr Rochecouste said. “But more importantly, having lots of artwork that reflects the history, the biodiversity … and the culture. “It’s really important to get local artists involved.” Expressions of interest close Monday, November 11. Clothes at bar prices A unique ‘op-shop bar’ raising funds to help end violence against children has opened its doors in Footscray. Local bar Lickety Split has teamed up with East 9th Brewing to launch ‘Doss Closet’, a bar that doubles as an op-shop, with all proceeds from clothing sales donated to the Polished Man campaign. The Polished Man campaign involves participants painting a fingernail blue to start conversations that drive awareness and fundraising for children harmed by violence. East 9th Brewing owners Josh Lefers of Footscray, Stephen Wools of West Footscray and Benjamin Cairns of Yarraville, last year raised $50,000 for the campaign when they coloured more than 100,000 of their iconic Doss Blockos brown-paper bags blue to help raise funds and awareness. This year they’ve taken things one step further, joining forces with Jerome Borazio’s

Lickety Split team to open ‘Doss Closet’. The bar features walls lined with second-hand clothes, blue-wash lighting as a nod to the Polished Man cause, and Melbourne’s first SHUFL tables, a shuffleboard-type game taking over bars worldwide. “Josh and I opened Chinese Restaurant a few years back and had an amazing time doing it, so we jumped at the opportunity to work with the East 9th team on this project,” Mr Borazio said. Mr Lefers said the East 9th team had organised one-off ‘op-shop parties’ in the past to raise money for local charities, so thought the idea of a dedicated op-shop bar would be fun. Located inside Lickety Split at 38-40 Moreland Street in Footscray, the Doss Closet bar is open 4pm until late Thursday to Sunday. Benjamin Millar

UPDATE ON THE WEST GATE TUNNEL PROJECT Construction has now started on Melbourne’s second major river crossing for the west, with foundations being built for the bridges over the Maribyrnong River. A 30-metre high piling rig has been floated in on a barge to start building the bridge that will cross the river to connect the West Gate Tunnels to a new elevated road above Footscray Road and directly to the Port of Melbourne. Two ramps adjoining the bridge will also be constructed, giving direct freeway access to Mackenzie Road and Appleton Dock Road for trucks entering the port. The bridges over the Maribyrnong River, just south of Footscray Road, are a vital part of the project to take motorists to the northern and western parts of the CBD and get trucks off local roads. Innovative bridge construction methods are being used to build the Maribyrnong River bridges and ensure that we keep the river open to boats, keep Mackenzie Road open for truck access to the port, as well as meet all environmental requirements to protect the health of the river. Further along Footscray Road we have made progress on the concrete columns that will support the two kilometres of elevated road that will run above it. This road will connect the tunnel to the port, city and CityLink. Further west, a key part of the West Gate Tunnel Project is the widening of the West Gate Freeway from eight to 12 through lanes to provide more capacity and reduce congestion. To create room for the extra lanes, we are replacing massive electricity towers with 15 slimmer monopoles – up to 58m tall – and two smaller lattice towers. Six monopoles and the two lattice towers are being installed within the freeway reserve, between Grieve Parade in Altona North and Hyde Street in Yarraville. Nine monopoles are being installed within the Brooklyn Terminal Station. This important work will be managed so that all lanes of the freeway remain open during peak times.

From information about traffic disruptions to videos of progress updates, social media plays a vital role in engaging and informing the community about the West Gate Tunnel Project. Join our growing online community and keep up to date on all aspects of the project by following our Facebook, LinkedIn and Instagram pages. Open space and a greener west We are greening the west through creating about nine hectares of new open space. Former industrial land will be transformed into new parks for the community, featuring playgrounds, wetlands, interpretative artwork and thousands of trees. Native plants are prominent in the design based on community feedback during planning for the project. People were keen for native plants to complement and adapt well to the local environment, and to provide a green visual screen in a range of areas, including near the new noise walls. Head to westgatetunnelproject.vic.gov.au to see artist impressions of what the new parks and wetlands will look like.

Murder accused granted bail

By Benjamin Millar The west’s brightest artistic talent will be joined by acclaimed international acts this month as part of the expanded 2019 Due West Arts Festival. Taking place from November 15-24 in and around Footscray, the festival shines a spotlight on Melbourne’s west as a hotspot for art, culture and entertainment. The festival was first held last year, stepping into the vacuum left after the popular Big West festival wound up after 20 years. Footscray Community Arts Centre has this year stepped in to produce the festival, with Maribyrnong council funding, offering a program of more than 40 events spread over 14 sites. Events include karaoke videos screening in tribute to the lost Little Saigon market, a tour of shops guided by Footscray’s traders and its newest young arrivals, and a rave transforming the historical Kinnears Ropeworks site into a party venue. Kala, a classical Indian dance performance featuring a live orchestra, will take audiences on a transformative journey about death and regeneration, while FLOW is a multimedia celebration of local waterways, created in collaboration with local schools. Festival executive producer Lana Nguyen said the focus is on amplifying the unique voice, sound and music of the west, culminating in a series of performances, parties and installations suitable for all ages. “We’re proudly giving a platform to the people and communities of Melbourne’s west,” she said. Maribyrnong mayor Martin Zakharov said the festival includes theatre, live art, dance, visual art, spoken word and films by local, national and international artists. A Footscray man charged with murdering his estranged wife 12 years ago has been released on bail. Emil Petrov, 55, was charged earlier this year over the 2007 death of Melton South woman Cindy Crossthwaite, 12 years after the mother-of-three was found dead just metres from her infant son. She died from head injuries. The pair had separated in September 2005 and Petrov is the father of her two eldest children. Supreme Court of Victoria Justice Peter Almond noted that the court must refuse bail on murder charges unless satisfied that there are exceptional circumstances. He said Petrov’s situation met such conditions, including his status as principal carer for his elderly mother in their Footscray home. “She needs regular supervision and care in her home and is unable to live independently without the assistance of another person,” he said. He must live at that address, abide by a curfew, report regularly to police and surrender his passport. Petrov must also avoid contacting any prosecution witnesses or the man co-accused of the crime. In granting bail, Justice Almond also noted the lack of physical evidence linking Petrov to the crime and the length of time taken before he was charged over the death. A committal hearing is due to be held on May 18 next year. Benjamin Millar Performers Govind Pillai and Raina Peterson of Karma Dance. (Damjan Janevski) 199784_04

Man jailed over formula thefts By Alesha Capone A man who pleaded guilty to taking part in nine burglaries which targeted baby formula and vitamins has been sentenced to three years jail. Goods totalling $541,000 were stolen during the burglaires, committed on commercial premises between June 8 and August 30 last year. Gurwinder Gill was sentenced last month in the County Court after pleading guilty to nine charges of theft, one charge of possessing a drug of dependence and the summary offence of committing an indictable offence while on bail. Judge Michael Cahilll told the court that Gill and his accomplices committed the burglaries “late at night on commercial premises which were targeted for baby formula and vitamins intended for Asia”. A Point Cook business was one of those hit, with about $90,000 of stock stolen. Gill was arrested in Laverton North last August when he collected a truck used during one of the burglaries. Police also searched Gill’s car and found a phone, knuckle dusters, $640 in cash, an angle grinder and a small bag of heroin. Judge Cahill said that Gill admitted to police he had been paid $7000, which he used to buy heroin, for his involvement in the burglaries. Gill also told police that he had been battling a heroin addiction for two to three years. In sentencing, Judge Cahill said he had taken into account Gill’s lack of prior convictions, “frank admissions” to police and “good prospects of rehabilitation”. Judge Cahill said two of Gill’s co-offenders, Herdeep Singh and Navjinder Singh, had previously been sentenced for their part in three burglaries on commercial premises.

Halloween lights up Newport The Rotary Club of Williamstown last Thursday hosted its annual Halloween community celebration in Newport. Hundreds of children turned up to Leo Hoffman Reserve. The event was supported by DONS (Dads of Newport and Surrounds), schools and traders. Rotary president Eddie Knight hailed the celebration a huge success. “The Rotary Club is putting this event on as part of their commitment to bringing local communities together,“ he said. “Jumping castles, aeroplane rides and face-painting are free, as are all the sausages that Rotary cooks. “Gold coin donations were greatly appreciated.“

Bringing Stony Creek back By Benjamin Millar A plan guiding the future of the Stony Creek corridor in the wake of the toxic Tottenham fire aims to increase community access and improve water quality in the contaminated creek. An existing strategy outlining priority improvements within the corridor that was released in 2011 has been significantly overhauled to consider the impact of the fire, culminating in the Draft Stony Creek Future Directions Plan.

Millions of litres of toxic run-off from the August 2018 Tottenham warehouse fire flooded the creek, killing thousands of fish and rendering the water unsafe for human or animal contact. Clean-up costs to remove a cocktail of chemicals have already soared past $6 million. Melbourne Water pumped 70 million litres of polluted water straight to the sewer immediately after the fire, and has been removing hundreds of tonnes of contaminated sediment from the creek. The new draft plan incorporates actions

identified in Melbourne Water’s creek rehabilitation plan and looks at ways to improve water quality and create better access to the entire creek corridor. A council report on the plan notes that the open spaces along Stony Creek and the Maribyrnong River are the area’s most frequently used and highly valued open spaces. “The linear open space along Stony Creek forms an important movement and recreation corridor while the creek itself is a highly valued urban waterway and a relatively natural setting for much of its length,” it states.

“Many of the actions within the 2011 Directions Plan have been implemented, however a number of community requests had been received seeking additional guidance for areas lacking in the plan including Cruickshank Park.” The council undertook consultation last year to inform master planning for the Cruickshank Park area, but this was put on hold following the Tottenham fire to focus on recovery. The draft plan will go out for community consultation before a final plan is adopted early next year.

Heart of the garden wonderful people can be and how they contribute and give, and what the kids get out of it is just wonderful.” As well as planting, growing, harvesting and cooking their own food, the children sell plants and bottled worm wee to the community to raise funds. Ms Pearson said volunteers and donations, such as potting mix and seedlings, were always welcome. To help out, call 9391 4233. Goya Dmytryshchak

Known as a little school with a big heart, Altona North Primary is harvesting community bonds through its kitchen garden. Teacher Kate Pearson said the school’s kitchen garden and cooking program for grade 3/4 pupils was co-ordinated by volunteers with help from classroom teachers. “We’ve had volunteers from some of the local commission housing areas,” she said. “We had a volunteer who’s a qualified chef who doesn’t work, and he helped run a cooking session with almost 60 kids. “We have families from school … come in and do weeding and planting. “It is very much driven by this volunteer group. “We’re such a small school. We’re the lowest socio-economic school in Hobsons Bay, so it is really relying on donations and people’s generosity and time. “I’m just constantly amazed at how

Watching youth star in theatre By Alesha Capone More than 40 young people from across the west will come together to perform a show in Footscray, St Albans and Werribee. The concerts will bring together a trio of Western Edge Youth Arts (WEYA) community youth theatre ensembles, which are based in each of the three suburbs. The show, The Watching, will include three sections which link together, as a reflection on the communal experience of viewing, with scenes as varied as period drama, a supernatural thriller and a mafia noir-themed section. Truganina resident Amarachi Okorom, 22,

will perform in the show. Okorom, who is also a spoken word poet and writer, said The Watching was also a “subtle commentary on representation in the media”. Okorom said cast members, who come from many backgrounds and cultures, were featured on a poster advertising the show. “I think people would want to watch, even just looking at the poster, it’s something new and I feel like the people in it – I don’t want to use the word different, as we’re all human – but they may hopefully feel represented,” she said. Okorom said that people from different cultures could feel uncomfortable attending the theatre, or that they might not be represented in a production.

“It’s crazy that’s what people think, but it’s our reality,” she said. “But if we can make people come into our spaces without feeling bothered, we’ve done our job.” The Watching will be on Saturday, November 9 at The Bowery Theatre in St Albans; Saturday, November 16 at the Footscray Community Arts Centre; and Tuesday, November 19 at the Wyndham Cultural Centre. Tickets: adults $10, concession $5, group 4+ $25. (Book at bowerystacc.com.au, duewestartsfestival.com.au or wyncc.com.au) Amarachi Okorom will perform. (Joe Mastroianni) 199809_01

Homicide cold case breakthrough A man has been arrested in relation to the death of Altona North man Richard Mladenich 19 years ago. Police last Wednesday arrested Thomas Ivanovic, 44, in Brunswick West. His arrest comes months after Purana Taskforce detectives renewed an appeal for information and revealed never before seen photos inside room 18 of the motel where Mladenich was shot. Mladenich, 37, was shot dead with a .25 calibre pistol at St Kilda’s Esquire Motel in Acland Street about 3.30am on May 16, 2000. His family spoke at the time police launched their renewed appeal in July. Mladenich’s older brother Mark said the family, including his 93-year-old mother, would not rest in peace until his death was resolved. “Nineteen years has been long enough,” Mr Mladenich said. “I’ve got faith in the police to resolve this case. “He left a heartbroken mother, a brother and a family. He didn’t deserve what he got because Richard was a good family member. A childhood friend of Roberta Williams, Mladenich was a well-known underworld figure with a wide range of criminal associates and links to the drug trade, police said. Anyone with information should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Goya Dmytryshchak

Train pain as punctuality slips

12431480-NG46-19

10 MARIBYRNONG & HOBSONS BAY STAR WEEKLY Wednesday, 6 November, 2019

The state opposition has labelled Metro’s performance on the Werribee line for September as “shocking“. Speaking in State Parliament last month, opposition Public Transport spokesman David Davis said the punctuality rate on the Werribee line was 86.6 per cent during September. According to statistics from Metro, 4505 of 5334 Werribee train services arrived on time during the month (compared to a punctuality rate of 91.3 per cent for September last year. In September this year, train lines with worse punctuality rates than Werribee were the Frankston line, 83.2 per cent, the Cranbourne line, 84.5 per cent and Pakenham line, 85.3 per cent. The Glen Waverley line recorded the best punctuality of 97.1 per cent. A total of 59 trains were cancelled on the Werribee line in September, while 42 ran short (less carriages than usual) and 47 bypassed some stations. Train operator Metro issued a statement which said they were working with the Department of Transport to improve reliability. It said track, signalling and electrical upgrades, tree clearing, graffiti removal and bridge maintenance works were carried out across the network in September.

MY PLACE Jane McLaughlin, Williamstown resident and Irish Famine Orphan Girls Commemoration committee member, speaks with Goya Dmytryshchak. What’s your connection to Hobsons Bay? I was born in Dublin, Ireland, and I have been a resident of Williamstown for 15 years.

people less fortunate than others. I work full time as a program manager in IT. In my spare time I enjoy planning and supporting events within our community for causes that are close to my heart.

What do you like about Williamstown?

What don’t you like or what could be improved? Nothing! What’s your favourite cafe and/or restaurant? My favourite cafe is the Kiosk at Williamstown beach – the selection of food, ice cream, juices and coffee is fantastic. There is a great vibe there all year round and the staff are always so friendly. The Kiosk’s sister restaurants in Williamstown North and Yarraville, Pizza D’asporto, are also superb.

Can you tell us about the Irish Famine orphan girls Commemoration event? There is a standing rock in Burgoyne Reserve in Williamstown in commemoration of the hundreds of Irish orphan girls that arrived in Hobsons Bay on six ships to Melbourne between December 1848 until March 1850, during the Famine in Ireland. Their story is one of suffering. Most of these orphans had a terrible time when they arrived in Australia. This story in many ways also represents the suffering for the Irish and all other nationalities being forced to leave their homelands. We can’t let these stories get lost in history, we must continue to pass this the message through the generations and keep it relevant to the families of today. The standing rock has been in Williamstown for 21 years and each year there is a ceremony to remember these girls. The backdrop is spectacular with a view of Melbourne city across the water. It is an extremely special event with some descendants of the orphans in attendance.

(Joe Mastroianni) 199924_02

I enjoy being a part of a great community. The natural environment that we live in here in Hobsons Bay is beautiful and the local restaurants and businesses are fantastic, offering a wide variety of food, and I always try to shop local.

What are you passionate about? I am passionate about making the world we live in a better place for everyone, particularly for our children and future generations and also

The Irish Famine Orphan Girls Commemoration is on Sunday, November 17 from 2.30pm-4.30pm at Famine Rock, Burgoyne Reserve, Strand, Williamstown.

This inviting Newport house offers up plenty of charm both inside and out. It presents as a typical weatherboard of the era – and area – but has been renovated to modern expectations. There are three bedrooms, the main with an en suite and walk-in robe and a separate living area and study. An open-plan living/kitchen/dining area at the rear of the house would be the most popular family destination. There’s oodles of kitchen cabinetry, honey-coloured floorboards and plenty of natural light. Outside, an imposing pergola with room enough for both a dining and lounge setting overlooks the neat and tidy gardens. Bonus for a growing family is a versatile stand-alone studio or teen retreat that adds an extra bedroom.

With all the visual appeal of a cottage but the space of a family house, this Williamstown property is well situated to enjoy the best this suburb has on offer. It’s close to shops, parks, including the Williamstown Botanic Gardens, schools and a 10-minute walk to North Williamstown and Williamstown Beach stations and the beach. The interior has been thoroughly modernised and the new owners could move right in. All three bedrooms are generously proportioned – the main bedroom has an en suite and built-in robes flanking a fireplace. The midsection of the house is taken up by an open-plan living/dining/kitchen area and an adjoining study ideal for family time. The mature gardens face north-west for plenty of winter sun and there is a lock-up garage and carport via ROW access.

SPORT The 12th man plays its part for Western United

Max Burgess got a lift from the Western United fan support. (Luke Hemer) 200116_01

Western United striker Besart Berisha underlined what a derby victory would mean to his club in an impassioned plea to teammates in the huddle before they went out to battle against his former club Melbourne Victory in the A-League on Saturday night. Berisha’s words were most important because they deflected a week of build-up largely revolving around his first game back against the Victory – a club where he will go down as one of the greats – to the us against them mentality United took into the local derby. In footage released on Western United’s social media accounts, Berisha said: “Boys, it’s an important game, not for me, but for us. This is the game every football player wants to play in. This is the games every football player wants to win.” It was clear this was a game for Western United that was far bigger than the individual storylines. This was all about making a strong impression against a Victory team that has ruled this city since the A-League’s inception. Max Burgess came on as a substitute in the

midfield for Western United and savoured every moment of his side’s 3-2 upset win. “It was one of those special moments as a player,” Burgess said. “Definitely for the club as well, it was a special night. “Obviously a big derby and hopefully the start of something special in terms of that rivalry.” The quality of the match and the high drama of Western United’s comeback win will spark a rivalry between the two tribes. “To come back from two-nil down was really gutsy,” he said. “It showed a lot of character and I think everyone saw that with the way we celebrated together at the final whistle.” A pocket of Western United fans donning the striking green and black merchandise never stopped chanting or waving their flags for the full 90 minutes. Burgess said the away supporters provided great contagious energy. “We love their support as players,” he said. “There’s that real connection with the fans

because it’s the first year. “We’re starting from the beginning with them and we’re all starting to connect on a personal level.” Western United is a perfect two-from-two on the road, but the fourth placed side is yet to register a win on home soil. That rankles Burgess and his teammates and they want to fix that unwanted record against Western Sydney Wanderers at GMHBA Stadium this Saturday night. “It will be really good to get back to the fans and test ourselves against a really strong side,” Burgess said. Meanwhile, Western United has just launched a new four-game membership, which includes admission to the remaining 2019 games in Geelong against the Western Sydney Wanderers, Newcastle Jets, Sydney FC and the derby with Melbourne Victory. The price is $60 for adults and $15 for children and can be purchased through the web at wufc.memberlink.net.au Lance Jenkinson

Derby delight for Western United By Lance Jenkinson Western United has stunned local rivals Melbourne Victory, scoring the last three goals of their inaugural derby to win 3-2 in the A-League at Marvel Stadium on Saturday night. It was the first time in Victory’s 15-year history that it has lost a game when holding a two-goal lead. United stormed to victory on the back of two first half goals, the first a doozy from Alessandro Diamanti and the second an own goal from Victory defender James Donachie, and a second half match-winner from Scott McDonald. United coach Mark Rudan said “it’s up there” with the most special wins of his coaching career. “Two-nil down, away from home, through our own mistakes, we gave them two goals and they punished us for that, but we were courageous, they kept on playing, they kept on doing the things that we worked on and the team we want to be as well, and you get rewarded for it,” Rudan said. “It’s persistence, it’s courage, it’s a belief in our principles of play, so I’m really happy for them. “It’s a testament to what we’re building as a football club.” Western United could not have envisaged a worse start to the match. The first 10 minutes were dominated by the Victory and plagued with United defensive errors. Andrew Durante, usually safe with the ball at his feet for Western United, produced a loose pass that was broken up by Victory defender Leigh Broxham in the lead-up to Victory’s first goal. Broxham pounced to move the ball to Kristijan Dobras, who found Victory captain Ola Toivonen poised and ready to unleash powerful long range strike for a goal. A minute later, Connor Chapman carelessly turned the ball over for Western United. On this occasion, Toivonen re-paid the favour, assisting Dobras on a goal to make it 2-0 to Victory after just seven minutes. Western United started to clean up its act after the Dobras goal. Indeed, they enjoyed a sustained period of pressure that led to Italian superstar Alessandro Diamanti halving the deficit in the 16th minute. McDonald built up the attacking move for United, shifting the Victory defence out of

position, but his cross was only half cleared by a defender and straight to the feet of Diamanti, who dragged United back into the game with a powerfully struck goal for United from outside the box. It was a crucial moment in the game. “It was important that we got that first one,” Rudan said. “Football is a very funny game, if they had’ve got the third one, it would’ve been a different story, but they didn’t. “We showed a lot of character.” Western United was the dominant team for the remainder of the first half. Their reward came through a bit of luck in the form of an equalising own goal from Donachie. McDonald again did most of the build-up work to the goal and served up a delightful cross to Josh Risdon. Risdon redirected the ball with a header back into the box and a lunging United striker Besart Berisha did everything but get his boot on the ball, but missed the tap in. Berisha’s former teammate Donachie came to his aid, accidentally putting the ball into his own net. Fittingly, the 50th minute winner for Western United came from McDonald. McDonald feigned to go inboard, but jinked back to shoot with his right boot and a deflection off Broxham saw the ball sail into the top corner away from Victory goalkeeper Lawrence Thomas. Rudan was reticent to praise any one individual after the win, but conceded McDonald was a stand out. “He put his hand up, he stood up, but a lot of other players did as well,” Rudan said. “These big games, the big players stand up and create the big moments.” Rudan is adamant the win on the road over Melbourne Victory is worth more to Western United than three points. This game will be a reference point for his side for the remainder of the season and a moment to savour for the fans. “This will be a game, I believe, in 10 or 15 years time that we can look back on as a football club and it’s quite a defining moment as far as I’m concerned,” Rudan said. “They should get a lot of confidence from that because we can come to a place like this and be 2-0 down after a matter of minutes and turn it around.” Western United will square off with title contenders Western Sydney Wanderers in a blockbuster at GHMBA Stadium in Geelong from 7.30pm on Saturday night.

Bulldogs’ legend’s daughter arrives at the kennel

Isabella Grant goes on a run in her final season with the Western Jets. (Shawn Smits) 200119_01

Isabella Grant arrived at the AFL Women’s draft safe in the knowledge that she would be drafted by the Western Bulldogs under the father-daughter rule. That did not do anything to settle the nerves or dampen the excitement for the 18 year-old. When Grant, the daughter of former AFL star Chris, heard her name read out with pick 47, her reaction was just like the other 46 players that heard their names read out before her. “When they had on the screen, next pick Bulldogs, my heart was racing so quickly,” Grant said. “Even though I knew, it was that final bit of clarity. “I was really excited to have that opportunity [to be pre-drafted] a little bit earlier and it did relieve a lot of the stress.” It is a dream come true for Grant to land at the Western Bulldogs. The youngster is truly a player that Bulldogs fans can be proud to say is ‘one of our own’. She is western suburbs-raised, came through

the juniors at Spotswood and made it in the elite pathway with the Western Jets. It is an easy transition for Grant too, living a 15-minute drive from the VU Whitten Oval and having enjoyed a long association with the Bulldogs. “Yeah I guess in a way [it is home],” Grant said. “Sort of hanging around the changerooms and getting the opportunity to train with them with the NAB AFLW Academy, so it’s definitely great to call that home and can’t wait to get started and be part of that culture.” Grant entered her top-age year with the Western Jets uncertain if she would be drafted. When she was informed that the Western Bulldogs would take her under the father-daughter rule, she was taken aback. “I didn’t even know what to say,” Grant said. “I thought it was a joke because it was not expected. “Even at the beginning of this year, I was sort

United ready to re-ignite

of telling myself that it wasn’t going to happen because I didn’t want to disappoint myself. “Just that realisation [of being drafted] is crazy, yeah.” Grant’s excitement was exceeded only by one person, her father. Chris, an AFL hall of famer, is a legend of the Bulldogs, a former captain with 341 games and 554 goals to his name, to go with three All Australian gongs and two club best-and-fairest awards. “He’s been a very happy man around the house lately,” Isabella said with a laugh. Grant got picked in the 2019 NAB League girls team of the year on the half forward flank. She is not too fussed where new Bulldogs coach Nathan Burke inserts her into the line-up as long as she gets to pull on the red, white and blue. “I’d be happy to play anywhere,” Grant said. By Lance Jenkinson Footscray United has finally captured a glimpse of the light at the end of a long and dark tunnel. The Bulldogs are ready to put three consecutive relegation seasons behind them and start their climb back to relevance through the Victorian Turf Cricket Association division 4. There is no better time than right now for the Bulldogs to snap out of the funk that has dogged them since their last premiership in 2015-16. “You always want to have success, but this year even more so,” Bulldogs captain-coach Steve McKay said. “It’s an exciting year, the club’s 85th anniversary, new clubrooms, new deck and hopefully some success on the cricket pitch. “I haven’t looked forward to cricket this much in a few years now. “There’s a good vibe around the club.” McKay is sad to be farewelling Footscray United’s old clubrooms at Scovell Reserve. While there have been plenty of good times – he celebrated two senior premierships in those rooms – he knows it is best for the Bulldogs’ future to turn a new chapter. “It’s definitely emotional, but it’s been in the works for a number of years now,” McKay said. “We knew it was coming, but it still doesn’t make it easier because we’ve had some good times in those clubrooms.” Footscray United has been in a stunning freefall over the past three summers. The Bulldogs started that period in the VTCA’s second tier, but with just four wins in the past three seasons, they have tumbled to their lowest ebb to now reside in the fifth-tier. McKay said the club struggled after the glorious 2015-16 season due to the departure of seven players. Even McKay spent time away from the kennel, playing two seasons with Westmeadows, but he did not enjoy his time away. As they say, home is where the heart is. “I’ve been at Footscray United since I was eight, so that’s 25 years,” he said. “It’s a very family-oriented club and all the guys around the club are welcoming. “It’s one of those clubs you love to be around. “I play cricket because I enjoy it and I wasn’t really enjoying it there [at Westmeadows], but you deal with it, you move on.” McKay returned to Footscray United ready to get back to work. The Bulldogs re-installed him as their leader despite spending time away from the club. “It’s a good challenge,” he said. “I did it [captaincy] three years ago and we had some success that year, so we’re hoping for a bit more success this year. “With the team we have, I’m pretty confident of getting back up there soon, if we can keep these guys together.”

Aaron Green brought up his 400th game for Williamstown Wolves. (Shawn Smits) 200121_01

Baseball Williamstown Wolves have paid tribute to 400-game star Aaron Green in the finest possible way with a victory. The Wolves marked Green’s milestone game with a 5-1 win over Port Melbourne Mariners at Greenwich Reserve on Sunday. Green, who sits 13th on the Wolves games record list, still has some way to go to catch Laurie Treadwell, who holds the record with a massive 850 games.

Cricket Footscray had to settle for a draw in its Victorian Premier Cricket clash with St Kilda at CitiPower Centre. The second day of the match was scrubbed out due to persistent rain. Even the first day was interrupted by rain with the Bulldogs on track to a big score with 2-165 on the back of 91 not out from Matt Underwood. The Bulldogs will re-load to take on Camberwell Magpies in a two-day game at the Merv Hughes Oval this weekend.

Yaditha Ushan is a crucial part of Footscray United’s bowling attack. (Damjan Janevski) 200120_01

When quizzed on Footscray United’s strengths and weaknesses this season, McKay spoke in glowing terms of the batting line-up, but stopped short of mentioning any weaknesses. McKay is happy with the squad the Bulldogs have assembled and is just eager for the rain clouds to disperse so he can see how well they match up against the rest of the competition. “From what I’ve seen so far this season, it’s looking promising,” he said.

Some of the key players for Footscray United include left arm quick Yaditha Ushan, opening bowler Kevin Dahl and leg spinner Anushka Thanthiri. With 444 runs, Charith Perera was the Bulldogs’ leading run scorer last summer, so big things are expected again, while Tharthiri has impressed in the opening spot in pre-season. Footscray United will do battle with St Andrews at Pennell Reserve in Braybrook on Saturday.

Braybrook has pulled off the coaching coup of the Western Region Football League division 3 off season. The Brookers have appointed Vinnie Turcinovich, coach of the division 2 premiers Yarraville Seddon, to take over as senior coach next season. Turcinovich was the AFL Victoria western region coach of the year in 2019. FOR MORE SPORT, VISIT Web: starweekly.com.au Sunbury & Macedon Ranges Star Weekly @starweeklysport @star_weekly

Mitsubishi ASX gets new look By Ewan Kennedy, Marque Motoring AT A GLANCE

Mitsubishi Australia has announced details of major revisions to its small SUV, the ASX. Though it’s been on sale here since 2010 it frequently outsells all others in its class. To be frank, the main reason for that is the low prices achieved because it’s capital costs have been paid off. The Japan giant has long been a major player in the SUV and 4WD arenas - think Mitsubishi Outlander, Eclipse Cross, Pajero Sport and Pajero - not to forget the Triton pickup truck which is also selling its wheels off these days. The ASX Exceed and the new GSR model have a 2.4-litre engine with power of 123kW and torque at 222Nm. The others retain the existing 2.0-litre powerplant (110kW / 197Nm) This upgraded Mitsubishi ASX now has the very successful “Mitsubishi Dynamic Shield front end. In the ASX, black and chrome finishes have been added to the new-shape front bumper and grille. The semi-sporty GSR model has a rear spoiler, inside are black cloth headlining microsuede and leather-look seats with red stitching. The Exceed has leather seats. An eight-inch display system replaces the previous seven-inch unit. Infotainment includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and DAB radio. The ASX Exceed also gains a Rockford Premium Audio system and TomTomŽ navigation. Active Stability Control is now standard across the Mitsubishi ASX range to improve handling and enhance safety. Electrochromatic rear view mirror and Forward Collision Mitigation, previously part of the ASX with ADAS package, are now standard across the range. The FCM system detects obstructions ahead and issues a visual

and audible alert when there is a danger of a collision, automatically applying the brakes to either avoid a collision or reduce the impact. Mitsubishi ASX ES can be ordered with the ADAS package for $2500 extra, with additional features, including lane departure warning, automatic low/high beam, reverse sensors,

blind spot warning, lane change assist and rear cross traffic alert An Emergency Stop Signal System automatically flashes the hazard lights to warn the driver behind when sudden braking is detected at a speed above 55km/h. The Mitsubishi ASX, ES, LS and Exceed are

available now, but the MR and GSR won’t be Down Under till December. At this stage we haven’t been able to get behind the wheel of upgraded Mitsubishi ASX models, but will do so soon and report back. In particular we are keen on sampling the 2.4-litre engine.
