Bold plan for arts hub By Benjamin Millar A striking new community hub costing up to $130 million to build, could rise on the site of the Footscray library and carpark under ambitious plans revealed by Maribyrnong council. A feasibility report prepared by architectural firm Architectus has identified four concept options for the development of the Footscray Library Community and Cultural Hub, significantly reshaping the Paisley Street sites currently occupied by the library and two carparks. The project would deliver a rebuilt library, programmed performing arts venue and exhibition and co-working spaces, along with a new public park.

Its viability hinges on whether the council can attract “significant” federal and state government funding, which a council report suggests is a reasonable expectation as it would deliver “regional benefits” for the entire western suburbs. A business case analysing each option remains secret, but the report reveals capital costs would range from $45 million to replace the existing library to $128 million to realise the entire concept. An estimated $2.7 million of ongoing recurrent annual funding would also be required. “At the minimum, the library could be brought to contemporary standard, however with greater investment the site could accommodate a civic park, arts and cultural activity, arts exhibition spaces, performing arts events, a range of flexible work and meeting spaces, and potentially required administrative and commercial spaces,” the report stated. “The greater investment will bring to Footscray and the inner west a facility to support the future of civic life in the city.” The report notes “an emerging consensus” among government stakeholders that the project would generate positive cultural and economic benefits for the creative economy in Melbourne’s west. “Any actual budget requests of council will be subject to future consideration, approval and the realisation of significant co-funding agreements with other levels of government.”

Moving a motion to proceed to the next stage of the project, councillor Sarah Carter told last week’s council meeting the vision was a culmination of years of work looking at what Maribyrnong and the western suburbs need. “I think we need to be ambitious for the city. Now is the time to think big, dream big.”

Maribyrnong mayor Martin Zakharov said it is important to recognise the economic value of supporting the arts, particularly in driving tourism. “It’s something that’s often ignored in Australia,” he said. Community consultation on the concept
designs will run until mid-December, after which a further report will be provided to the council. If the project obtains funding approval, it could be designed in 2020-21, constructed between 2021 and 2023 and potentially operational by 2023-24.

Love where you live? Try Seabrook, says report Seabrook has been ranked 11th and Altona Meadows 15th in Melbourne’s most affordable and liveable suburbs for housing. The People’s Choice of Housing report released this month also ranked Kingsville at 16 and Williamstown 20th in the most affordable and liveable suburbs for units, with a median unit price of $393,500 and $517,000, respectively. People’s Choice spokesman Stuart Symons said Seabrook didn’t have the lowest median house price at $622,500, but its liveability was “definitely attractive”.
“It has a relatively low crime rate at 45 reported crimes per 1000 population and is in the top one-third of suburbs when it comes to public transport coverage,” he said. “It’s also less than 20km from the CBD, which is one of the reasons why we believe the western suburbs may be underrated when it comes to liveability. “For Melbourne suburbs we also look at how close suburbs are to major employment hubs. Seabrook is in easy driving distance to two of Melbourne’s employment hubs: the CBD and the airport. “We also look at community stability.
Seabrook is reasonably settled, which makes it more appealing than a suburb that has perhaps one in five people leaving every year.” Mr Symons said Altona Meadows’ median house price was $617,500 and it was close to the city with relatively low crime rates. “It has three schools or childcare centres – even if you don’t have kids, for us that makes it more likely that a council will look after an area, which means you are more likely to enjoy a well-kept suburb,” he said. Mr Symons said Kingsville was likely to see more interest in future.

New hospital build moves a step closer
By Benjamin Millar Laws must be beefed up to allow swifter responses to emergency health and safety risks such as those posed by the Tottenham fire, according to campaigners fighting for changes to toxic waste management. Star Weekly last week reported that up to 10 million litres of chemicals had been left exposed at the site of the toxic 2018 Tottenham fire for more than a year, sparking a furious response from nearby residents. Footscray MP Katie Hall organised a community meeting last Thursday evening at which EPA and WorkSafe representatives briefed residents on the process and timeline in place for the site’s eventual clean-up. But Sue Vittori, chair of the Anti-Toxic Waste Alliance, said the delays in alerting the community to the situation and securing the site have been entirely unacceptable. While authorities last week said that waste and chemicals must be removed from the site by August 2020, Ms Vittori said the process highlighted the shortcomings of existing laws to deal with the problems created by cowboy operators in the waste sector. “We weren’t happy that once again the duty holder was declared responsible for the clean-up and given so long to act – where does that leave the community in the meantime?” Ms Vittori said authorities and the government have moved far too slowly to resolve what has clearly been an emergency situation since the fire tore through the warehouse full of illegally dumped chemicals and scrap metal. “It’s appalling – where’s the emergency response from the government on this like we would see for something like a bushfire outside the metropolitan area?” Ms Vittori also criticised the lack of information and transparency throughout the process, which she says has created a sense of distrust among residents living in the vicinity of the fire site. “They’ve always said the fire risk is low, but now we know that they didn’t really know what was in there, so we just feel like we’ve been kept
“The surrounding suburbs of Yarraville and Seddon have … seen a lift in interest as a result of their character appeal, and the government’s investment in Footscray as a transport hub is likely to fuel further interest,” he said. He said Williamstown had solid liveability characteristics including “low-ish crime, reasonable council investment and a large number of schools and childcare centres, and a top 50 ranking when it comes to public transport coverage”.
residues. Ms Vittori said she was alarmed that security had only just been put in place despite the potential risk posed by the chemicals on the site. If the clean-up is not completed by next August, taxpayers may also be forced to pick up the bill to deal with the site.
The race to build the $1.5 billion Footscray Hospital is down to three final contenders. The state government has shortlisted a trio of construction company consortia vying to build the 504-bed hospital to replace the existing cramped and crumbling 1950’s era hospital. The contenders for the private-public partnership project are Advance West (Tetris Capital, John Holland, John Holland Services and ISS), Examplar Health (Capella Capital, Lendlease and Spotless) and Plenary Health (Plenary Group, Multiplex, Honeywell and Compass). Health Minister Jenny Mikakos said the final consortium would be announced next year and construction would begin later in 2020, with completion due in 2025. The new Footscray Hospital will be built on the site currently used as a carpark next to Victoria University’s Footscray Park campus. Ms Mikakos said the new hospital will be able to treat almost 15,000 extra patients each year and accept 20,000 more at the emergency department. “This is another big milestone on our way to building the $1.5 billion Footscray Hospital – the single biggest hospital project in Victoria’s history to date,” she said. “We’ve conducted a worldwide search to find the very best construction companies to build the world-class Footscray Hospital.” The current 290-bed Footscray Hospital – plagued by leaks, cracks and failing equipment – will remain operational until the new hospital opens. Songs against violence Residents are being invited to participate in a community choir and use their voices to make a stand against gender-based violence. Hobsons Bay council is offering a series of free community singing workshops, culminating in a grand finale performance as part of the global 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence campaign. Councillor Tony Briffa said it was an opportunity for the community to unite as one voice and shine a light on gender-based violence. “The theme for this year’s campaign is ‘Respect women: Call it out’,” Cr Briffa said. “The entire community has a role to play in calling out unacceptable behaviour and this is an opportunity to show that when it comes to
gender-based violence, we are all singing from the same song sheet.” The final performance is on December 10 at Williamstown Town Hall, and will feature guest performers including community choir Willin’ Wimmin. Singing workshops, conducted by Big Feminist Sing, are for all levels of experience, genders, abilities and ages, but minors must be accompanied by a guardian. Choristers are required to attend at least one rehearsal before the end-of-year concert. Rehearsals will be held in November and December. Struck by flesh-eating disease By Goya Dmytryshchak A Williamstown mother-of-two this month returned home from hospital after battling life-threatening blood poisoning and a flesh-eating disease for two months. Jodie Wylie, a nurse who for many years worked in The Alfred hospital’s intensive care unit, suddenly found herself admitted as a patient after being mysteriously struck down. Following a pleasant day of gardening, Ms Wylie said she woke up on August 16 feeling too sick to get her daughters, aged seven and 10, ready for school.

“I spent that day just lying there with a migraine, throwing up,” she said. “Next morning, I was in such a bad way I called a friend. “I had a sore throat and my glands were starting to swell.” Her friend called a doctor who paid a house visit. “I had a temperature of 39 and I did say to him, ‘My head is about to explode’,” Ms Wylie said. “He put it down to a virus and a migraine. “By the next morning, I can’t describe the pain. I am so lucky my friend decided to come and check on me. “I can’t remember her being there. “I was refusing an ambulance, so she called my sister. “I don’t remember her turning up.” On August 18, Ms Wylie was rushed to The Royal Melbourne Hospital and put straight

into a resuscitation cubicle. She was diagnosed with life-threatening septicaemia or blood poisoning and necrotising fasciitis, commonly known as flesh-eating disease. “By the time I got to the emergency department, my whole leg was swollen along the side,” Ms Wylie said. “They biopsied it. It looked like cellulitis and it was me that kept saying, apparently, ‘No, it’s not, it’s necrotising fasciitis. “I looked at it and I said to my sister, ‘I’ve got necrotising fasciitis and I’m about to get really sick and I feel like I’m dying’. “All I could think of was my two children. “Of course, the nature of necrotising fasciitis is, it spreads. It’s from a nasty bacteria and it kills the flesh and it moves rapidly.” Jodie was transferred to intensive care at The Alfred as surgeons removed more and more tissue from her infected right leg. Her family, some of whom had arrived from interstate, were told to “prepare for the worst”. “I had surgery every three days to keep the wound clean, to free it from bacteria,” Ms Wylie said. “It ended up being 14 surgeries. “I needed a skin graft; they took a lot of skin off the left leg. “They needed enough skin to put on the wound, so it’s my upper thigh down to my knee.” After two gruelling months, Jodie was allowed to come home as she undergoes extensive rehabilitation. Jodie said she was “humbled” by offers of support, including the mums from Williamstown North Primary School who have set up a roster to help her and her children. Her friend, Anne Pastor, has also launched a GoFundMe campaign to assist on the long road to recovery. For details, visit https://www.gofundme. com/f/support-Jodie-through-her-recovery

Development bid up in the air By Benjamin Millar A developer could take control of airspace above a Footscray laneway after threats of a costly legal stoush spurred Maribyrnong council to back down on its earlier refusal to sell the rights. Australian Securities Property Fund (ASPF) bought two parcels of land at 22-28 Ford Street, Footscray in 2014 for $1.7 million. In 2016 it flagged plans to buy airspace over the laneway that split the parcels so it could build a single, 13-storey, 120-apartment building straddling the road, which is used to
access the rear of properties on Droop Street. Councillors voting in a 2017 confidential session resolved to advertise to sell the airspace at a height above four metres, for $121,000. The proposal was opposed by neighbouring property owners and a 2018 council report found complaints raised were valid concerns, particularly in relation to natural light, surveillance and the safety and security of residents. At this time, councillors voted not to proceed with the sale. ASPF sought to challenge the decision in the Supreme Court. A mediation hearing was held on June 5 this
year and six days later councillors resolved in a confidential meeting to sell the airspace after-all, “desiring to avoid the cost and inconvenience of litigation”. In a letter to council supporting the sale, ASPF noted its planning application has been on hold while the purchase of the rights to the airspace was pursued. “The acquisition of the airspace would facilitate a far more efficient development proposition by enabling sharing of building services and amenities, and through the design of larger floor plates at levels 1 and above,” the letter states.
An objection lodged with the council on behalf of Droop Street landowners stated the sale of airspace would “seriously impact” use of the laneway. “The occupiers of 16 Droop Street use the laneway for deliveries by vehicles and the height of such vehicular traffic should not be impinged by any sale of airspace,” the letter states. “The adjoining owners should not be attempting to force a sale … by means of legal action and at the expense of other adjoining owners by reducing the value of their land for redevelopment purposes in the future.” A further report is being prepared.
Surf, sand – the sun is here People flocked to Altona and Williamstown beaches on Thursday as Melbourne experienced the first spring day over 30 degrees and the hottest October day in four years. The temperature at Laverton reached 34.6 degrees last Thursday. Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Richard Carlyon said this week would be similar with the mercury topping 30 degrees for the rest of this week. “Temperatures are building but it looks like Thursday we’re likely to see a similar temperature around 33-35 degrees,” he said. Friday is set to be another hot one before dropping to about 24 degrees on Saturday.

Council pushes for rate change Maribyrnong council is pushing the state government to significantly overhaul Victoria’s property rating system. The council has prepared a submission for the current rating system review, seeking a series of changes to level out the fluctuations in rate bills from year to year. The key change being sought is a proposal for ‘valuation averaging’, under which all councils would strike rates based on an average valuation calculated for each property over the previous five years. The submission also proposes the reintroduction of the option for councils to apply minimum rates and to allow up to five ‘value bands’ to apply rates at different amounts in the dollar for different valuation levels. “It is proposed that this structure be introduced to enable councils to make their rating structure either more progressive or regressive according to their policy objectives,” it states. Maribyrnong council introduced sweeping changes to its own rating system this year in the wake of a backlash from property owners, some of whom had their rates bill double within the space of 12 months. The council dumped the net annual value (NAV) rating system of valuing land and calculating rates and moved to the more common capital improved value (CIV) system. Benjamin Millar

A Yarraville pizzeria is tasting a slice of success after taking out the title of Victoria’s most popular restaurant. Pizza Del Sole has been named as the most popular Menulog restaurant in Victoria in the popular online food ordering app’s Restaurant Awards. The win was based on the pizzeria’s outstanding order numbers as well as overall customer satisfaction. Pizza Del Sole owner Deepak Singh said he was surprised and delighted by the award win. “We have a lot of happy customers, people know we are providing good food at a good price,” he said. Mr Singh said the pizzeria is well known for its Del Sole special pizza, supreme meat lovers pizza and calamari and prawns pizza, which is topped with fresh tiger prawns. He said his team shares his passion for fresh ingredients and authentic preparation methods. “I have been doing this for about 13 or 14 years, I have always been in love with food,” he said. “I always wanted to open my own restaurant, which I did here about six years ago – I don’t care about the money, it’s about making sure people get good food that is good quality.” Menulog commercial director Rory Murphy said the Menulog Restaurant Awards are designed to recognise the hard work and success of restaurant partners. “Pizza Del Sole have done an exceptional job of delighting pizza-lovers with delicious food and quality service,” he said. “The restaurant has become a hotspot for traditional Italian cuisine in Victoria, which is a huge achievement for Deepak and the team.”

Ground grief for Seagulls By Goya Dmytryshchak Players are getting injured and games have been move from Williamstown Football Club’s home ground, prompting calls for planned council works to be brought forward. Council works at Downer Oval are not slated to happen until late 2023 but the club wants it to start next October. Williamstown Football Club chief executive Jason Reddick this month wrote to Hobsons Bay chief executive Aaron Van Egmond, pleading for action. “There were 30 community teams that were displaced off the ground for scheduled games and we had to move a home game against Geelong, which was a televised game, out to Werribee,â€? Mr Reddick told Star Weekly. “These are ongoing issues that we’ve been having with the ground because it doesn’t have any drainage and when the ground was last serviced by council back in 2012, they effectively ran short of funds and didn’t put drainage into the ground.â€? The AFL has written a letter of support, noting Williamstown was the first VFL stand-alone club to field a VFL Women’s team and was widely used by other football stakeholders including the Western Jets NAB League, NAB League Girls teams, as a WRFL finals venue and by other clubs within Hobsons Bay. The club estimates work required to bring Downer Oval up to standard will cost about $1.5 million. Mr Reddick said the club couldn’t continue to operate for another four years, with players “100 per centâ€? at risk of injury. “We’ve got a record number of players who have suffered soft tissue injuries during the year, ‌ a lot of that can be put down to the ground

surface,â€? he said. “Our women’s team ‌ our captain had to have two ankle operations in the off season because she hurt her ankle playing at the ground, and one of our other players did her knee and had to have an ACL [anterior cruciate ligament] reconstruction. “The majority of the time, the council or the AFL will actually move the game off the
surface rather than play when it’s rain-affected and that’s the biggest concern. Hobsons Bay council said it would table a petition from the club, with 393 signatures, at its council meeting on November 12, along with a recommendation to bring back a report on the matter at the next appropriate council meeting.
A fund set up in memory of Footscray climate scientist Dr Penny Whetton has raised more than $26,000 for the environmental rehabilitation of one of her most cherished natural places. Dr Whetton, the wife of Federal Greens MP Janet Rice, died suddenly on September 11. A chuffed.org fundraiser set up in tribute to her life and work has so far raised just over $26,000 to support revegetation and erosion control work at Sisters Beach in North West Tasmania. The beach was chosen as a place that was special to Dr Whetton and is near where she was when she died. The University of Melbourne has established another fund, known as the Penny Whetton Memorial Fund, which is accepting donations to support climate science. Mirvac unveils first new houses By Goya Dmytryshchak The first houses for sale on the former Don Smallgoods site at Altona North have been launched by Mirvac as the first stage of its $350 million proposed development. Mirvac is one of multiple developers on the 66-hectare site, which fronts Blackshaws Road and is bounded by Kyle Road, New Street and the West Gate Freeway. The site – half the size of Melbourne’s CBD – is set to be redeveloped as housing for as many as 7000 people. There are currently more than 1100 dwellings in the pipeline under plans being considered by
Hobsons Bay council: • Mirvac plans to build 50 two and three-storey townhouses as stage one at 188-198 Blackshaws Road. • Stockland has proposed 286 two and three-storey townhouses at 278-288 Blackshaws Road and 8-38 Kyle Road. • Oliver Hume plans to build 781 dwellings (637 two and three-storey townhouses and two ‘superlots’ to accommodate a further 144 townhouses and apartments) at 40-68 Kyle Road. • United Development Melbourne plans to build 56 two and three-storey townhouses as stage one at 22-46 New Street. • Form 700 has proposed a 44 lot subdivision at
270-274 and 276 Blackshaws Road. Construction on the first stage of Mirvac’s masterplanned community, known as ‘The Fabric’, is set to start later this year. It will have two, three and four bedroom townhouses and future mid-rise apartments with a 4000 square metre park in the centre. Mirvac Victorian residential general manager Elysa Anderson said a total of about 500 townhouses and some mid-rise apartments were planned on its 11.5 hectare portion of the site. Mirvac’s townhouses in The Fabric start from $670,000 for two bedrooms, from $785,000 for three bedrooms and from $970,000 for four bedrooms.

A shared history Yarraville pupils delving into Australia and Greece’s shared history have taken out a number of awards in a creative competition. Six pupils from St Nicholas Greek School picked up the awards in the 2019 Australian Hellenic Memorial student competition. Pupils were asked to create and contribute essays, poems or drawings that explore Greece and Australia’s involvement in World War I and World War II. Petros took out third prize in the years 4-6 category, while encouragement awards went to Sophia (1-3), Evan (1-3), Achilles (4-6), Nikoleta, (4-6) and Vivian (7-9). School spokesman Father Alexandros said the pupils were invited to an official ceremony last Sunday at the Australian Hellenic Memorial, adjacent to the Shrine of Remembrance in Kings Domain.
“We congratulate the students for their outstanding work and hope they have learnt something new about the connections between Australia and Greece,” he said. The memorial commemorates the involvement of the Australian Armed Forces during World War II, paying tribute to the 841 Australians who died in Greece and in the Battle of Crete, as well as the 3000 Australians that were captured and ended up as prisoners of war. Chefs cook up a storm
Anushka Zargaryan with a honey cake and Walleed Rasheed with baklava. (Joe Mastroianni)
Two former Masterchef contestants from the western suburbs will reunite for one of the country’s largest cooking events. Sydenham’s Anushka Zargaryan and Altona’s Walleed Rasheed will share a tent at the Cake, Bake and Sweets show as they endeavour to keep their culinary dreams alive post Masterchef. Anushka will be serving her honey cake, which became a signature dish and wowed the judges on the hit tv show. She hopes it proves as popular with the public. “I’ve got two flavours now, the original honey and chocolate,” she said. “I’m hoping it will generate enough interest at the show to manufacture it.” Walleed was known to many before Masterchef through his business, the Fresh Prince of Baklava, which trades from Kensington and South Melbourne markets. With Anushka launching her product and Walleed already having an established base, the duo decided it was the perfect time to collaborate. “We’re doing our own products, but we’re going to share a tent, share the love and help each other get through it,” Anushka said. The Cake, Bake and Sweets show will be held November 29 – December 1 at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre. Instagram: @freshprinceofbaklava and @ anushkaskitchen
… elevated planes create communal gardens - Doig Architecture
’’
The development plan was rejected by Hobsons Bay council in 2017 but later approved on appeal to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal. Selling agent Meadows Projects states that the precinct will be launched next year. Doig Architecture has advertised the new residential and retail centre on its website. “A short walk from Spotswood train station, this mixed use centre integrates commercial and community spaces within clusters at street level,” its website states. “This mixed-use concept provides residential blocs with elevated, green ground planes serving each cluster of apartments, and a destination is created for social ‘meet and greet’ in a small northern-facing urban square. “Atop the shopping centre, elevated planes create communal gardens between apartments, and showcase views of the Yarra River and skyline.”

Songs of the fightback By Benjamin Millar It was the quintessential people power struggle – the fight by the people of Melbourne’s west to save their beloved Bulldogs. Thirty years ago this month, weighed down by crippling debt, the Footscray Bulldogs were told they had no place in the VFL competition as a stand-alone team, they could fold or merge with Fitzroy. A court injunction gave the club some breathing space, but the real work still needed to be done.

I took up his offer and I penned the song - Frankie Mulholland
More than 10,000 people rallied at the Western Oval, a watershed moment at which performer Frankie Boy Mulholland took the stage. Mulholland said he has fond recollections of being part of the October 8 rally, penning a song specifically for the occasion. “I received a phone call from the great man Les Twentyman on the Thursday night before the rally and he asked me if I could write a song about these events and sing it at the rally,” he said. “I took up his offer and I penned the song Old Footscray Town. I played and sang it at the rally in front of more than 10,000 people, and as history is written, the Bulldogs were saved.” The 30-year anniversary of the Fightback has inspired Mulholland to record Old Footscray Town onto a CD, along with a country/blues version of club song Sons Of The West. “This CD has significant musical historical

value in my opinion, for all Bulldogs members and fans to be able to go back in time to always remember what they tried to do to their club – it should never be forgotten.”

Mulholland visited Whitten Oval last week to present the club’s museum with a framed plaque commemorating the fightback and featuring a copy of the songs.
Three storey plan rejected Plans to transform an Altona street by replacing 10 single-storey villa units with 14 predominantly three-storey townhouses have been rejected for a third time. Bourakis Industries had applied to Hobsons Bay council to redevelop 4-22 Fresno Street, which is opposite Altona Tennis Club and several sporting ovals. The council received 15 objections with the main concerns relating to excessive building height, impacts on existing and preferred neighbourhood character, general loss of amenity and traffic management issues. A special planning committee (SPC) of the council last week refused the proposal. The SPC, comprising mayor Jonathon Marsden and ward councillors Tony Briffa and Sandra Wilson, went against an officer’s recommendation to approve the application. Reasons for refusal include the application not meeting state or local planning policies, not respecting neighbourhood character and being an overdevelopment. The proposal has previously been rejected by the council and the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT). The owner of the site, Brian Noordenne, confirmed he would appeal the council’s refusal at VCAT. Goya Dmytryshchak

Midway is the concrete destination Not long ago, David Boxhall and his 80-man crew from Midway Concrete & Gardening Supplies pulled up stumps after many years in Sunshine and established a 20,000-square-metre super plant at Laverton, Victoria’s largest. Midway was a small minimix and garden supplies business when David took ownership 17 years ago. He’d had a 30-year spell as a concreter before that, running his own contracting business and working on some of Melbourne’s largest projects. David says that today, with Midway’s 50-strong fleet of maxi, mini and tip trucks (with carrying capacities up to 22 cubic metres), they can meet every type of concrete/soil/product delivery from a vast range of choices. “Our specialty is decorative concrete, but we also deliver a large amount of grey concrete in Melbourne’s north and west,” David explains. “Midway opens up a world of choice when it comes to exposed concrete designs. “Our expert team members – with an average of 14 years with us – love to offer inspiration to people, helping them to tailor designs to suit every application and colour palette.” Yes, Midway is clearly the destination for all things concrete, but its peerless assortment of gardening and landscaping supplies is also impressive. Patient service is the focus at Chemist Discount Centre When Simon Jiao took ownership of the popular Tom Sarros Pharmacy following Tom’s retirement and 35 years’ pharmacy service to the community, he deliberately chose to make little change, keeping all existing team members and business practices. After almost two years managing the business, Simon renamed it Chemist Discount Centre Altona, believing that a service-based pharmacy must expand and offer competitive prices to enable best outcomes for patients. Simon says Chemist Discount Centre Altona is a very busy pharmacy, with the needs of hundreds of customers and patients being met every day. “This is a challenge – but one we love. It’s a privilege to meet the needs of our customers, providing them with the right professional care and advice,” Simon says. “Seeing them leave the pharmacy satisfied – and then seeing them return again and again – gives all our staff enormous job satisfaction.” Most of the staff at Chemist Discount Centre have been on board for 10 years-plus. The pharmacist, Barbara Macdonald, and pharmacy assistant, Jane McCarthy, have been around for more than 25 years. “Our team knows the local community really well, with this knowledge and understanding providing customers and patients with confidence in approaching them for advice and product information. We also have a
strong collaborative approach with other health professionals and GPs in the area. “As part of our service package, we offer afterhour deliveries to nursing homes to ensure all medication needs of residents are met, and we will even drive to the other side of town for a customer to procure an item we don’t currently have in stock. There’s no lip service in our service.” Barbara explains how Chemist Discount Centre’s upgrade to a cloud-based system to manage Webster packs (dose administration aids) is an important service to the community. “A major advantage of the new system is that it provides access by health professionals, such as doctors and nurses, to a patient’s medication profile,” Barbara says. “This establishes an improved communication channel for everyone involved in that patient’s care. And a good Webster pack can often allow elderly patients to remain in their own homes longer.” While Simon acknowledges that Tom’s shoes would always be hard for anyone to fill, he’s forging ahead with creating his own strong community links and providing patients with competitive prices – with no compromise in service standards. local builder, the house rocks three-metre ceilings with rosettes and embellished cornices, beautiful leadlight french doors, a corbelled archway in the wide floorboarded entry hall, patterned carpeting and elegant window treatments, as well as traditional mantelpiece surrounding a gas log fire. The front lounge-dining room is a gracious space for more formal times and has french doors to a delightful paved courtyard with a sculptural wall planter. This steps down to a spacious, brick-paved patio rimmed with pretty gardens and synthetic turf. Kids and pets will be just as happy out here as the adults will be when entertaining. On the outside, this double-fronted Edwardian oozes period charm, on the inside, it’s all about flexibility for the modern family. Crisp, light-coloured walls bounce light around the large rooms, anchored by warm-toned timber floors. Four bedrooms, two bathrooms, separate dining, living rooms, a study and large attic storage provide a space for everything. A rear bedroom with en suite and its own external access provides an opportunity for income earning potential or separate guest or family accommodation. It’s combined with a delightful garden and outdoor entertaining area with timber deck and open pergola, all within a five minute walk of Newport station.
Period lines create a great first impression that continues throughout this renovated property. Following a traditional layout, all four double bedrooms are off a central passage leading from the front door. The main bedroom has a beautiful bay window and stunning modern en suit, the rest have built-in robes. At passage end, the house opens to a large kitchen, dining and living area anchored by warm timber floors. Dark feature walls and kitchen cabinetry add depth here, while large sliders to an outdoor entertaining area flood the room with natural light. Location is also impressive, close to Newport Lakes Park and Mason Street.

This post-war, three-bedroom plus property harmonises convenience and timeless touches. Fronted by a classic picket fence and set in a vibrant garden of flowering trees and verdant lawn it has a pale blue weatherboard and red brick exterior, with front door shaded by a deep, covered porch. Rich carpeting in the bright, spacious lounge room, as well as some of the bedrooms, evoke a warm spirit and keep things cosy. A gas heater with a mantle, and charming pendant lights suspended above, are an inviting focal point. The space connects seamlessly to a pleasant meals area and kitchen. Here, vintage finishes on the benchtops and a rounded edge to the breakfast peninsular suffuse the family zone with a sense of nostalgia, while cabinets provide abundant storage space. Opposite the living room, there are three bedrooms one of which overlooks the front garden. All share access to a family bathroom. The backyard is a thriving, but neat space, with a potting shed and a free-standing pergola with open and closing roof. The residence also has an outdoor toilet and independent young members of the family and guests will find a fourth sleeping space in a separate bungalow, appealing. It is attached to a private and casual rumpus area that also has a bar for entertainment.

SPORT Midfielder looking for redemption at Marvel Stadium
Western United midfielder Dario Jertec sees Saturday night’s game against Melbourne Victory as a chance for redemption. (Luke Hemer)
Western United midfielder Dario Jertec has been around the block long enough to know that losing is an inevitable part of football. While United’s 2-1 loss to Melbourne City was a bitter pill to swallow, Jertec and his teammates will look forward to their chance for redemption when they face Melbourne Victory in a much-anticipated derby at Marvel Stadium this Saturday night. “We’re playing for wins, but sometimes you lose, sometimes you’re not lucky, but this is football,” Jertec said. “We have a new chance, we’ll try to win and we’ll give all the best of ourselves to win.” Jertec, a 34-year-old Croatian with 17 years experience as a professional footballer, was encouraged by Western United’s second half
performance against Melbourne City. He believes his side did enough to claim points out of the contest, but they were ripped away by a striking master class from Melbourne City frontman Jamie Maclaren. “I think they were better [in the] first half, second half we were better, but they scored this last five minutes and they take three points,” Jertec said. Jertec has been a key cog in the Western United midfield, but he was critical of his own performance in the loss to Melbourne City. Like a number of his teammates, Jertec struggled to make an impact in the first half, but he was beginning to feed his forwards some delightful passes in the second half
before he was subbed off. With a point to prove, Jertec could be one to watch for United in the derby against Victory. “I’m a central midfielder and I have to create good passes for [Alessandro] Diamanti, for [Besart] Berisha, for Pana [Kone] if I’m behind him,” he said. “This is my job. “Today I didn’t be good, but next week I have a new chance. “Every week is [a] new game and I hope we’ll be better next week.” Western United will face Melbourne City at Marvel Stadium on Saturday at 7.30pm. Lance Jenkinson
United fails to fire By Lance Jenkinson Western United lacked the discipline and polish that it displayed in its first two A-League games and paid a heavy price with a 2-1 loss to a slicker 10-man Melbourne City in the derby at GMHBA Stadium in Geelong on Sunday night. United trailed by a goal at the break after a disappointing first half, but the Mark Rudan-coached side found a way back into the contest in the 66th minute when prolific striker Besart Berisha converted the penalty he drew following a harsh challenge from City defender Harrison Delbridge, who saw yellow for a second time and was given his marching orders. If United got the impression that it would be a little more comfortable playing with the man advantage, it proved a false dawn as Melbourne City found a spectacular winner through in-form striker Jamie Maclaren in the 85th minute. Maclaren, who finished with a double, was the difference between the two sides. Western United centre-back Andrew Durante described the loss as frustrating after his side had worked hard to get back into the contest and created the better chances in the second half. “It’s extremely disappointing we didn’t leave the home ground with at least a point,” Durante said. “I thought we had enough chances to at least finish the game a draw, but Maclaren is in some serious form at the moment and is scoring from all types of angles.” Not unlike the week before against Perth Glory, Western United came out of the blocks a little bit flat. Perhaps it had more to do with Melbourne City’s attacking intent on this occasion, but, either way, it was not what the 7042 spectators largely decked out in the green and black of United wanted to see. There were fleeting moments of excitement for United, in particular two chances that fell the way of Berisha. Attacking midfielder Alessandro Diamanti, who had quality touches all game for United, played in a nice through ball to Berisha in the 16th minute, but City defender Scott Galloway was quicker to react. Three minutes later, Diamanti whipped in a corner and Berisha’s powerfully struck header could only find the awaiting arms of City goalkeeper Dean Bouzanis. Aside from a chance just before half-time, when Diamanti put a free kick into the box and Scott McDonald’s header was parried away by Bouzanis, there was little else to get the United fans excited about. Melbourne City, though, played some breathtaking football and had a succession of chances, drawing a number of spectacular

saves from Western United goalkeeper Filip Kurto. Despite conceding two goals, Kurto, the A-League’s goalkeeper of the year last season, was one of the better players on the ground for United. The second half was more positive for Western United. United started to win their share of possession in the midfield and caused the City defence a few headaches with some dangerous balls into the front third. When Berisha netted from the penalty spot, it looked as though Western United had done

enough to weather the storm and could be on their way to victory. However, Maclaren’s spectacular goal meant all three points were heading to Melbourne City. Josh Brillante played a long hopeful ball and Maclaren had the speed to leave the United defence in his wake and power a shot to the right of Kurto that nestled into the far post. Western United cannot afford to dwell on the result with long-time A-League powerhouse Melbourne Victory on the horizon in a derby at Marvel Stadium on Saturday night. Both teams sit mid-table with four points each.
Western United centre-back Andrew Durante has formed a strong bond with fellow defenders Ersan Gulum and Connor Chapman in a short space of time. United has been fairly solid at the back, conceding just three goals in as many A-League games. While the form and numbers stack up for the trio, Durante is not resting on his laurels with pressure coming from within the squad. “Myself, Ersan and Connor have got a really good relationship,” he said. “There’s also good pressure on us from Brendan Hamill and [Aaron] Calver, who are excellent centre-backs as well. “We know that we need to perform if we want to keep our spot and that’s really good competition.” Durante has been a smart pick-up by Western United in its inaugural season. The experienced defender has been a calming influence in the heart of defence for United. The 37-year-old has also been a dependable distributor out of the back third. A former New Zealand international and stalwart of Wellington Phoenix, the Sydney-born Durante has enjoyed his first stint in Melbourne with Western United. “I feel really good and I’m enjoying my time,” he said. “I knew coming here what I was going to expect from working with [coach] Mark [Rudan] before. “It’s a great group of guys, a fantastic football club and I’m really proud to be a part of it. “So far I’m loving life here in Melbourne.” Durante is adamant that Western United is built for sustainable long term success. “It’s only going to get better,” he said. “The more we can get good results, it’s going to grow. “It’s a really special football club and they’re doing all the right things on and off the park. “It’ll take time, but I think we’re doing all the right things.” Lance Jenkinson

Midfielder makes Jets history, landing at the Bulldogs

Elisabeth Georgostathis has made history, becoming the first Western Jets player taken at an AFLW draft. Georgostathis was not the only Jets player named on draft day, with a further two current listed players and a former Jets graduate making it four in all from the western suburbs club. Being selected with pick nine by the Western Bulldogs has capped a remarkable year for Georgostathis. The midfielder captained the Jets in the NAB League and featured for the Bulldogs in their run to the VFLW grand final. Georgostathis is proud of her link with the Jets and honoured to be the first player taken from the club. “It’s a great honour,” she said. “The Western Jets have helped me so much over the last four years. “I’m just so grateful for them and all the development over the years.” Georgostathis is relatively new to football compared with many of the other players
selected at the 2020 AFLW draft. The 18-year-old’s sporting journey started in netball, but she gravitated towards football over the past five years. “I did netball for about eight years, but I just found that wasn’t my sport with no contact,” she said. “I like the physicality, so football was more my sport.” Georgostathis was one of the most hard-at-it youngsters on the Western Jets list. She averaged four tackles to go with her 20 disposals per game, which saw her named in the NAB League team of the year. The Western Bulldogs are a perfect landing spot for Georgostathis. A western suburbs local, she will not have to travel too far to train and play, and she is already familiar with the kennel, having been part of the club in the VFLW. “I don’t have to travel too far, which is good,” Georgostathis said. “I know most of the girls from playing VFL with them. “It’s really good, especially this year coming

into VFL, I was really nervous but all the AFL and VFL girls included me, encouraged me and supported me through every step. “I’m really grateful for them and really excited for next year.” Georgostathis will never forget the moment she heard her name called out by the Western Bulldogs. “It’s so surreal,” she said. “I can’t believe I just got drafted to the Bulldogs. “I’m so happy. “I can’t explain the feeling.” Isabella Grant is another Western Jets player who landed at the Bulldogs. Grant, a strong marking forward who also made the NAB League team of the year, became a Bulldog under the father-daughter rule. Cleo Saxon-Jones was selected by Richmond with pick 58. The former Jet taken was Sharnie Whiting, a mature-aged recruit who plyed her trade with Williamstown, taken at pick 36 by Carlton. Lance Jenkinson and Tara Murray

By Lance Jenkinson Altona has produced two stirring run chases to begin the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association east-west group season with a 2-0 record. The A’s and local rivals Williamstown are the only two sides with maximum points in what has been a rain-interrupted start to the campaign. On Saturday, Altona had a memorable four-wicket win, chasing down the Endeavour Hills total of 9-274 in the last over of the day at JK Grant Reserve. For a second game in a row, Matthew Grubb hit the winning runs for the A’s. A’s captain Adam Yates said victories in tight games can really lift the spirits at a cricket club. “Any time you chase down over 270, it’s a really good effort,” he said. “In the last over too, so it was a pretty tight finish and it has been the last two games. “It’s good to firstly win such a close contest, but to also chase such a big total was great.” It is not only Altona’s top team that is getting the job done. The A’s lower XIs have also been flawless and there is pressure on players in all grades to perform. “Our seconds and thirds also won, so our top three grades are all undefeated and our fourths have had two washouts,” Yates said. “As a club, we’re going really well and spirits are pretty good at training. “As you win more games, the hunger to continue that feeling gets stronger.” Faced with a tough run chase on a frustrating day two impacted by rain, Altona managed to stay focused and time its run chase to perfection. The A’s passed the target with just five balls to spare. While opener David Kinsella and first drop Yates were removed cheaply for Altona, Dylan Appleby rode his luck but played an important hand in building a foundation for the A’s with 42. “He gave a couple of chances, but he stuck it out,” Yates said. “He contributed in a really important partnership to get things back on track with Greg Sheehan. “His 42 was very important to us at the top of the order.” The match-winning partnership for Altona came between Sheehan and James Grubb. Sheehan was the backbone of the innings, producing a patient innings for 69. Grubb was the enforcer for the A’s en route to 92 not out. The pair put on a 110-run partnership for the fourth wicket. “That’s the second week in a row that they’ve had a really important partnership,” Yates said.

Baseball
Newport Rams have taken a disappointing 11-6 loss from game one of their three-match series with Sunshine Eagles in the Baseball Victoria summer league division 1 away at Barclay Reserve. The Rams pitchers could not contain the Eagles’ batters and their offence left it too late to come alive in the game. With two more games to come against Sunshine this week, including Saturday’s meeting at Newport’s KC White Reserve, the series is still well and truly alive. The Rams will be desperate to improve on their 1-4 record after five games.
Cricket
Footscray has made a strong start to its rain-affected two-day clash with St Kilda in the Victorian Premier Cricket at the CitiPower Centre. The Bulldogs marched confidently to 2-165 off 58.1 overs before rain brought a halt to play. Bulldogs opener Matt Underwood is on track for a century, finishing the day 91 not out. The first ball of day two will be bowled at 11am.
Bowls

“James was probably a little bit more aggressive and got the scoreboard ticking over. “Greg just occupied the crease for a long period. “Their partnership set us up to get into a winning position.” Grubb, who returned to Altona after a stint with Footscray in the Premier Cricket, is the form batsman in the competition after two knocks. The all-rounder posted 55 in round one against Box Hill and backed it up with a starring role in the win over Endeavour Hills. He batted with the lower order, including Daniel Mackenzie (18), Prateek Krishna (12) and his brother Matthew Grubb (11 not out) to
ensure the A’s reached the target. “For him to be there at the end was really important,” Yates said. Altona will look to keep the good times rolling when it hosts Croydon in a one-day game at JK Grant Reserve on Saturday. Meanwhile, Williamstown made it two-from-two with a four-wicket win over Box Hill at the Williamstown Cricket Ground. Set 200 for victory, the Seagulls passed the target in the 63rd over, led by Jarrod Flood-Bauce (68), captain Brent McMinn (51) and James Cook (39 not out). Yarraville suffered a seven-wicket loss at the hands of Noble Park on Saturday, leaving it with a win and a loss after two rounds.
Altona has continued its all-conquering ways to make it four straight wins to start the Bowls Victoria premier division season. The A’s mauled local rivals Yarraville-Footscray 99-51 in a one-sided game at Civic Parade on Saturday. All four rinks went the way of the rampaging A’s. While Altona is sitting comfortably in equal top spot with Bundoora, Yarraville-Footscray, has started the season 0-4.
